The movie Gothika came out in 2003, when it should have been made in 1973, the year of horror's real birth. Of course, we have no time machine. No intergalactic rewind button to press so's we can jump back in time and see the faces of the 1970's scream in blood curdling terror. However this movie, minus it's debut in a time when it could have really shattered the Psyche, this movie is a delightfully tense film. It is mind candy for anyone who wonders about ghosts and the paranormal and besides that, it delivers very good scares. The better part of the film is when things pick up, after everything is set in place as it seemingly should be. The good doctor, after seeing a tormented patient returns to the other side of the lock and key facility and meets with her husband, who happens to be the head doctor for a quick build up of what this patient's role in the film will be and we get to see the too smooch before we're interrupted by another quirky doctor played named Pete. She has a mundane swim with scary music to feed off your tension monitors and then leaves, saying a quick see you tomorrow to the night guard and goes home in a pretty humdrum fashion. However, just when you are comfortable in expecting to see her return home to her husband, you get to see a ghost in a very over done 'stands in the road and gets almost run over' scene. This is scary enough because of the setting. A back country road with no lights and an old wood bridge just behind you. The scares really deliver into the second part of the film as I have said, when good doctor is turned nutty patient in the eyes of everyone that matters. This is when you get to see a 'fish out of water' effect but with a fish who knows the ins and outs of every single cell, and if that isn't creepy enough the ghost of the teenage girl follows her back to the asylum to make her appear even more crazy. Overall this is a great film for the eyes of someone whose looking for a different spin on the doctor/patient relationship and a few good scares in between.

A very good psychological thriller

Gothika was a great horror movie. Halle Berry was brilliant as Miranda Grey, and I also liked Robert Downey Jr's character as the doctor who wanted to have an affair with her.The reason I liked this movie is because the theme was a psychological one, and the involvement of ghosts and other similar things in the movie was extremely limited, and the director does manages to involve ghosts in such a way that it does not make the movie look ridiculous, and I congratulate him/her for that.I think that the stupid thrillers are the ones that people laugh at. You are not supposed to laugh at something that isn't funny, and if you do, it just goes to show how ridiculous it really is. For example, I laughed plenty in Scary Movie 3. I cannot imagine a David Zucker type film of Gothika, and I would never laugh at it.This movie has a lot of suspense that builds up more and more throughout the movie, and it will make you ask hundreds of questions, "Why is she seeing ghosts?" "Why did she kill her husband?" "Is she really crazy?" and that sort of thing. It will make you want to continue watching and make you deeply involved in the movie. It will keep you guessing until the end, where (luckily!) all these questions are answered.Gothika succeeds in making people scared because it has scary things to do with normal things, and it does not involve anything that makes the movie look stupid. This horror movie surpasses many that I have seen and heard about in recent months.I would love to see more horror movies like this one, but currently directors just seem ignorant and prefer to make supernatural/stupid movies, such as Silent Hill, that will make you so confused that by the end you will be wondering, "What the hell just happened?" While Gothika makes you confused but in a good way, in a psychological way, and it succeeds in playing tricks with your brain and making you scared in plenty of places. It's been long since a movie has managed to do that to me.I watched it a few months ago, and at first I wasn't so sure I understood it, but then I got the true meaning of it but I soon understood it.The only (slightly) bad thing in the movie was that maybe they could have found a different way for Miranda to figure out who the murderers are, not by a ghost, but then that would not even make Gothika a proper movie. Apart from that, there's very little to criticise.I recommend this title! 8/10 stars

My dearest Halle...

My dearest Halle Berry;I am writing you this letter to warn you of the pratfalls of actresses winning Academy Awards. So cluttered in our closets are the remains of good women who took the wrong path, and this is my attempt to preemptively react to your present situation. I have written similar letters to Marisa Tomei and Mira Sorvino, both of which took their statues and hid behind such forgettable fair as The Watcher and Mimic. Although I have heard no response from either of these two women, I am sure they are cowering behind the truths I expelled. I am specifically attempting to contact you due to your latest effort, Gothika which I have recently screened on DVD. The movie, as you remember, stars yourself as a psychiatrist who awakens one day to be a patient in the very asylum you were once patrolled. Upon your awakening, you are told that your husband is dead and that evidence leads them to believe that you are the killer. Through sessions with a former colleague, you conclude that you can see ghosts and that are being haunted into the truth as to the who's and why's behind your husbands death. The movie does have a few frights as there are more than a few things that go bump to very loud overtures, however, on a whole, this is not one of your finer efforts. Maybe I should clarify. It is not so much your ‘effort' as it may be your choice of script for involvement. You see, ghost stories are usually not the kind of film a respected, award-winning actress might opt to divulge her talent. Especially not since Die Another Day and X2 were both commercially successful fluff films that did nothing to build upon your momentum. At the very least, if you are to try the suspense/horror genre at least pick something more interesting or with fewer clichés than a Cannonball Run entry. For instance, explain to me why in these films do lights make loud noises when they are turned on and off? While you are at it, I have an array of queries for you to ponder. Why does the killer have to explain everything to the audience at the same time they are trying to kill you? Why is there always a rat placed appropriately on the floor where someone falls? Why does no one ever believe the suffering character until the last moment? And finally, when reading a script that has all these elements, what draws actors to them like a mosquito to a blue light?I know you may not have all the answers, but I hope I have at least given you cause to sit down and re-read the script to verify that your choice was at one time founded. Maybe, you wanted to work with the director, Mathieu Kassovitz who directed the superior Crimson Rivers. Maybe the thought of having a star-vehicle of your own has haunted you since Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. I don't know, nor do I pledge any time to figure it out.My only hope is that I am not too late. Gothika, like Swordfish and ran off me like soap in a shower. It has only been a few hours since I viewed the film, and already I am having trouble recouping exactly what it was I spent my hard earned money and free time to examine. So, Ms. Berry, please take the time to read and ultimately understand my motivation for writing. Stay away from the Mercedes Ruehl's and Anna Paquin's of the world. Use your power for good (not unlike your Storm character) and become the Denzel Washington of the opposite sex. Take your time and read each script looking for the repetitiveness of every other Hollywood production. Please, I beg you. P.S. The latest reports are that you are in production of Catwoman. I will therefore get started on another letter.

It's the ones you never suspect

So many movies come out of Hollywood every year that it is difficult - if not impossible - to keep up with them all. There has been a recent trend of A-list actresses appearing in horror movies, so if you did the same as I did and groan "not again" when this movie was released, do yourself a favor and put this baby on your Netflix list. Good performances from Halle Berry and some real scene stealing from Penelope Cruz make this movie a must see. The key action is laid out from scene one: beautiful psychiatrist (Halle Berry) has a session with a seemingly deranged patient (Penelope Cruz) that she discusses with her husband/supervisor (Charles S. Dutton) and a clearly romantically interested co-worker (Robert Downey Jr.). Got all of that? Take notes as the roles shift multiple times and the crazy people seem normal, the normal people seem crazy, the responsible people seem dangerous and your scorecard will be busy trying to keep track. There are so many suspects in this movie (and I haven't even introduced the paranormal ones) and the movie does an excellent job of juggling them all right up until the final scene.

Some good jumpy moments

The movie was dark and the mood was consistent throughout the movie - murky and creepy. In one scene this ghost girl shows up behind Halle Berry and the entire audience jumped. The film seemed to keep my pulse rate up! There were some good scares, but I have to say, the ghost girl, with the wet hair in her face reminded me a little too much of the ghost girl from the Ring. This strange walk she did at one point was also reminiscent of the Ring. Halle Berry was beautiful and put in a great performance. I couldn't understand why she was married to such a fat old man though. (suspension of disbelief, yes, this is where I need to apply it!)

Gothika? Who or what is Gothika?

posted on 09 Jul 2009

Halle Berry plays a psychologist for a mental institution, who, while on her way home, gets into a car accident while swerving to avoid a girl standing in the middle of the road. She gets out of the car and asks if the girl needs help. She ends up blacking out and waking up in a cell in the mental hospital. When she asks why she is there, they claim that she had murdered her husband that night which she has no recollection of. The movie then delves into some paranormal crap that leads up to a typical "Hollywood" ending. GOTHIKA seems about as ridiculous as a horror film can get and is in no way 'creepy'. Why would they take a doctor back to the institution where she had worked at? Why the hell is it called "Gothika"? That's never explained... This is basically nothing but unoriginal nonsense that should be avoided at all costs.

Take it in the Asylum

posted on 29 Jun 2009

A dreary and uninspired entry into the "Psychological Third Act Twist Thriller" genre, this one was only saved from distribution by Nu-Image or Troma by the presence of Halle Berry, who may have the worst taste in projects of any actress ever known. How she can go from getting an Oscar to becoming Catwoman is beyond me. In this movie, Halle clearly has her head in somebody's else's Asylum. Gothika is a colossal train wreck, a movie about a haunted asylum where absolutely nothing happens.Joel Silver and his Dark Castle label may be the single worst thing to happen to horror movies in the history of cinema. Hard to believe that somehow they keep making these monstrosities. I won't even go into how bad Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions were. What happened to the Joel Silver who made Predator, and who is this charlatan who took his place? Next up, House of Wax starring Paris Hilton. Oh joy.

Mediocre Story, Played-out Plot

posted on 21 Jun 2009

Does this sound familiar? A person gets murdered. They then haunt someone and lead them clues that will help identify the killer. Hmnn? Sixth Sense, Stir of Echoes, What Lies Beneath, we could go on. But why? This movie might be somewhat entertaining if you have not seen a movie in this genre before. Otherwise, save your money and wait for the rental. The movie itself is somewhat OK. Halle does a decent job. The plot works. The movie moves along fairly well. But, it is all too familiar. The movie doesn't even try to add anything new to what we've already seen in this genre. It gives us the EXACT same plot with less compelling performances and no originality whatsoever.By the way, the movie might have been better if they had not given away so much in the trailer. That annoyed me to no end.6/10.-- DP.

Episode of Star Trek Much

Halle Berry is Hot. That's an automatic Point in their favor. However, for anyone that watches or has watched Star Trek: The Next Generation I suggest you look for an Episode called Frame of Mind.I tell you the wells of knowledge in Hollywood must be drying up when they are looking to Television shows from the 90's to make new movies.I dunno why I even bother watching some of the more recent crap coming out, I will admit though the Penelope Cruz plays a great crazy person, and Robert Downey Jr. wasn't doing too bad for getting back into serious acting. But still the plot was flat and predictable.Anyway 2 out of 10

What's with all the negative reviews?

posted on 03 Jun 2009

"Gothika", while not the best ghost story ever made, is not a bad movie. You have to remember that Dark Castle Films makes grade B horror movies which don't pretend to be anything other than grade B horror. And for a movie in that genre it's not bad. "The Ring" is an example of Grade A horror. In our jaded moviegoer age, it's hard to make a horror movie that really scares like "The Ring". "Gothika" is a reasonably interesting movie for it's type.

One of Dark Castle's best

posted on 03 Jun 2009

When I usually think of a 'Dark Castle' film, I think of cool use of sets and effects to create a cool, slightly exaggerated atmosphere, but often feature rather mediocre performances. This film delivered the atmosphere, but what surprised me was the solid acting jobs, granted with this cast to have a crappy film that would mean the director was incompetent. Halle Berry kept up the terror without seeming to burn out or become tired and the range of emotions displayed by John Carrol Lynch made him quite a treat to watch, he is a very versatile actor. Penelope Cruz was also quite good, showing how quickly she could go from one emotional extreme to the other But still, it is a 'Dark Castle' film so the real treat was for the eye with their unique style of visual effects, especially a trademark jerky animation that adds to the supernatural quality of their films. An entertaining evening at home.

Ghostly story line that keeps you looking

Halle, as usual, really makes this movie pop. The story is great for Halle fans and ghost story, horror, scary movie fans. Cool concept on this story of ghost that only appear to certain people for their own reasons. You must see this one if you like being scared or love trying to figure out what in the world could happen next. Halle's range of emotion is undeniably super star as she goes from reality to madness. The way she fights to hang on to her sanity will make you cheer for her. The specters that haunt her will make you afraid for her. The whole crew did a great effort to keep the senses on edge as things can happen in a blink of an eye. Halle will make you believe that saying in the movie that just because you are dead doesn't mean you have gone. You may even get a chill from the phrase Not Alone, after seeing this one.

Loved it, but what is next?

This movie was great. Loved it. The charaters were great, and the story was unbelieveable. I was on edge the whole time, when I watched it the first time. I want everyone I know to see it. I love the ending, with the boy ghost. So that leads to my number one question; Is there going to be a Gothika 2; And if so, when will it be coming out. I would love to see there be a second movie to it. If there isn't going to be, then I will be disappointed,A movie can not end like that. But I do love it, CL

Another Halle Berry Great!

I am disappointed that I didn't get to watch Gothika is the theaters but I just finished watching it on DVD and loved it! Gothika is a true masterpiece in psychological thrillers. It has been a really long time since I last got so involved in watching a film. It was really nice being so consumed within Gothika. I was trying to help "Miranda" find the way out of that prison! A movie that can put the viewer in with the actors, has to be a good one!I do not understand why the IMDB customers are only voting Gothika a 5.6, when Gothika was very well written, directed, had great special effects, and I must say that Halle Berry needs to win another "Best Actress" Oscar after seeing this film! Halle Berry is truly an amazing actress!Gothika is a definite DVD purchase!

It's pretty good, but they could've gone more in depth

Over all, I thought it was a decent movie. Very rarely can a ghost story go far, but I was impressed with the acting. Most of the movie is very predictable, but I don't judge on that. What I thought they were missing though was more of the story. The beginning is well paced, although I wanted a little more. I got past it though. The middle of the movie was great, there was a lot of excitement and action. Then comes the end. It was very predictable and a little quick. I felt like they could've explained more.SPOILERI was a bit confused on how Halle Barry was proved innocent, because the other killer was killed by her. The only proof was the tattoo's, but that could've been a coincidence. Over all, it was a great story. But like I said, I thought they could've done more.7/10

I really enjoyed the ***MICROPHONE*** in most of the close-up scenes. In the theater, it enjoyed cheers at every appearance! Unfortunately, it was clumsily hidden with a kind of black masking tape. It nevertheless managed to be visible whatever happened. But hey, what a laugh in the dark room!Halle: quite OKPlot AND Sheriff: Scooby-DooesqueTitle: might have to do with the building's architecture (?), similiar to other filming locations of following movies R. Zemeckis "The Haunting of Hill House", Spielberg's "House on Haunted Hill", etc. (Like Harlaxton Manor,Ettington Park Hotel, Ennis-Brown House, etc.)By the way, I think I have seen the exact scene of accident by the covered bridge in one episode of "Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, Episode 22: The Find - A newlywed couple run across an old motorcycle. The motorcycle is an out of production mint condition classic bike. The man takes a joy ride on the bike and hits a woman that disappears along with the motorcycle. The EMT describes the same accident the man had but it happened 54 years before to a young couple and the man was the only one to ever ride the bike which they believed that they released the spirits.Sorry for my english and for Penelope's too.

Don't even Bother

This is an awful film, full of plot holes and poor acting. the ending is sudden and unexpected and downright silly. Even the ghost does not understand the plot !.The majority of scenes do lend themselves to a slightly uncomfortable mood , but most of the shocks are just the same old build up of dramatic music then the compulsory pop up scare.I love a good scary phsycological thriller but this one left me confused and laughing at the suddenness of the ending. I was left wandering if the producers had run out of money or something. The acting is cheesy and uninspiring. I don't even know what Downeys character had to do with the plot, it was as if he had paid somebody to be in it.This is an easily forgettable film which i purchased by mistake and my DVD copy has been furiously boiled in my kettle. Don't rent it or buy it unless you want a film to complain and moan about.

Don't expect drama or suspense; it' just another Boo! movie

posted on 26 Apr 2009

The premise is explained well enough in the previews: Halle Berry is a prison psychologist who - after a strange incident driving home, in which she apparently sees a ghost - wakes up to find herself on the other side of the glass walls, apparently insane and guilty of murdering her husband. Robert Downey Jr. is her (now former) colleague and perhaps her only hope. But the whole situation is handled so implausibly. Not only do they dump her into the prison population with her not-necessarily-appreciative patients, but nearly every co-worker suddenly treats her like just another nutcase, not a person they used to work with on a daily basis. Maybe the point was to show how people's attitudes change about someone who's "crazy", but people don't just change like that. At the least they wallow in denial, refusing to believe it for a while. On top of this implausibly forced "characterisation" is a lot of equally tired cinematic hack work. It's a Dark and Stormy Night. The power keeps going out at inopportune times. The creepy blue lighting flickers a lot. And instead of letting the anxiety of the situation create tension, there's lots of rising-pitch background music to put you on edge, and people/things popping out of the dark to startle you. You know you're watching a bad movie when you have people laughing at this stuff.

Anyone familiar with the plot?

posted on 22 Apr 2009

Anyone familiar with the plots of The Sixth Sense and The Ring will find Gothika to be pretty familiar territory: Vengeful spirits unjustly killed seek to rectify wrongdoings by reaching out beyond the grave. Those they contact fear for their sanity, but eventually get with the program and ensure that evil is brought into the light. What moved Gothika beyond the PG-13 territory of those two films is an extended scene of non-sexual nudity, the inclusion of sexual torture as a plot point and an infusion of slasher chic-justice gets meted out with the edge of an axe. Gross stuff. And while it doesn't reach the disgusting extremes of, say, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it goes far enough for discerning viewers to leave it forever locked away in its own cinematic purgatory. How do you convince someone who is insane that what she is experiencing just isn't real? That question soon becomes much more personal for Miranda. While driving home in a stinging rain storm, she nearly runs down a drenched girl standing in the middle of the road. When Miranda checks to see if she needs help, both end up writhing in flames. The next thing Miranda knows is that she's locked in a cell at Woodward. In the space of a breath, three days have disappeared, three days in which Miranda's husband Doug was brutally murdered and she was found at the scene having a seizure. Miranda's former colleague, Pete, tells her she killed her husband. But Miranda knows that's not right. It was the girl, it had something to do with the girl, the girl who no one seems to think exists.
