I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You

posted on 22 Jun 2009

Greedy has taken some of the plot situations in the Paramount classic If I Had A Million and carried them to incredible heights. It has a whole string of good performances topped off by one of the last performances by Kirk Douglas before he had his stroke.Kirk plays the Richard Bennett part here, the millionaire who doesn't like almost all of his relatives, but gets a certain sadistic joy in seeing them perform like trained seals, trying to stay in his good graces. The only honest one of them is one of Ed Begley Jr.'s young sons who is just like that kid in If I Had a Million who started playing that record of I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You.Unlike Bennett, Douglas does not decide to drop parts of his fortune on eight random strangers. He just keeps putting his family through their paces until they decide to dig up Michael J. Fox, a nephew he actually liked when he was a kid.Fox is a second string professional bowler who's got a TV producer he's involved with, Nancy Travis. The two of them invade Douglas's three ring circus of relatives and get put through their paces also. All the family is against Douglas's 'nurse' Olivia D'Abo who the family is afraid will get the whole inheritance.Greedy is a nicely paced amusing comedy which I think most of us can identify with. I know I've had a relative or two I can't stand either, but am forced to be nice to for a variety of reasons. The relatives are all greedy, but Douglas is one sadistic creep as well. I'd catch it the next time it's on the tube.

Greedy gets my funny bone everytime!

Just a great comedy with wonderful chemistry between Fox and Douglas. For Michael J. Fox fans this is the opportunity to see Alex P. Keaton lose sight of his morals and get sucked into a game of greed and fortune (or misfortune). Greedy captures how low people go when it comes to money. It is a cheesy movie, but its fun and great for Fox fans.

Great movie!

I thought that "Greedy" is an excellent movie. I have seen it twice. It is funny and entertaining. Michael J. Fox was awesome. He was energetic and brought humor to the screen. I loved it.

Good story line, Lame Jokes

The storyline in this movie is great, but the comedy factor is very low. The attempted jokes in this movie are flavourless. If you go to watch this movie don't expect a comedy, expect a light-hearted drama. The ending is great and the actors are lively.

Average to Say the Least

"Greedy" is a pretty funny film about an aging relative (Kirk Douglas) who is about to kick-the-bucket. Enter a group of nephews and nieces who will do anything to make sure they are the ones who receive their uncle's riches when he is gone. After feeling defeated, they enlist the help of cousin Michael J. Fox who proves to be Douglas's favorite of the bunch. All the characters are funny and likeable. The late Phil Hartman is the best. Ed Begley, Jr., Olivia D'Abo, Jere Burns, and Nancy Travis are all good as well. However, this film still does not rise above the two-star level because there is no real screenplay and the direction is never made quite clear. Sometimes a slapstick comedy, but also very dark. Average overall, but nothing special in the end. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Phil Hartman is a Standout.... as is most of the cast.

An above average comedy made three times as good by one of the best casts ever. Michael J Fox stars as the only nice member of a family waiting for a rich relative to die. Kurt Douglas, Nancy Travis and Ed Begley Jr are just some of the hilarious cast. My absolute favourite scene is the brawl between Michael and Phil, but the film is full of unforgetable scenes. See it for yourself.

One of the BEST comedies to rent or own!!

From two great writers who worked on "Happy Days," it is safe to say that this film is one of the greatest comedies of the decade. It is a tad predictable, but beyond that it has a lively script and well cast performers. Great players gave great performances. This is clearly a comedy which also hit the right dramatic notes. Parts of the movie are emotional and believable. Any Mike J. Fox or Phil Hartman fan should see this. Kirk Douglas was a hoot. Nancy Travis as the lead actress was dead on. Her character was full of wit and charm, despite a bad hair day. Watch for strong performances by all.

The best bowling film made

Simply a great movie. Michael J. Fox trained with one of the greats, Johnny Petraglia for months in preparation for this movie. Fox went from a hack casual bowler to a respectable 175 average. Not good enough to actually throw the shots he was supposed to throw in the movie, though. The makers of Kingpin and Big Lebowski should have seen this one before making a mockery of the game. Any bowling lover should not miss this one.

A very funny movie, excellent cast

This is a movie you can enjoy time and time again. Kirk Douglas really plays the cranky old man well; you laugh at him, and feel sorry for him both at the same time. Michael J. Fox bends over backwards to please "Uncle Joe" to no avail, and his "Greedy" relatives, played by a wonderful cast, are a hoot!

Worth the wait

I was very happy to find this product and receive it in good condition. I love this movie and you made my day when I received it, because I watched it almost everyday since I got it. My movie arrived in about 5 days, all the while I was pacing the floor to get it. My family laugh every time we watch it. I couldn't be happier! I feel that this seller did everything very professional and I wouldn't mind buying more movies from them. Thank You!

Movie about greed

Kirk Douglas plays uncle Joe McTeague who is a rich old man who may not have so much time left. The relatives, including Ed Begley Jr, Colleen Camp and the late Phil Hartman come to him in hope to get lots of money after he's gone. Then there's also Molly Richardson (Olivia d'Abo), a sexy nurse of Joe who also wants to get rich. The relatives call the nephew Daniel McTeague (Michael J.Fox), the one Joe loved the most.Daniel is making his living by bowling and he has a girlfriend called Robin Hunter (Nancy Travis). Can Danny safe the situation? Greedy from 1994 is a nice comedy with good actors. The legendary Kirk Douglas is great as always.Mr Douglas is 84 years old now and he has won many awards from his life work. The latest was the 19th day of February in Berlin where he won the honorary Golden Bear award.Way to go Kirk!Michael J.Fox is excellent also in this movie.Since Alex P. Keaton days in Family Ties he has proved to be a talented actor. He has won some awards from his TV work in FT and Spin City.Unfortunately Mr Fox has suffered from Parkinson's disease since 1991 and he had to stop acting in Spin City last year.I hope all the best for Michael. Greedy is an educational film about greed and what it can make you do.Nobody should wish for somebody's death just to get some money. Greedy is a good comedy but it doesn't make any movie history. There are some good moments in the movie and the actors safe a lot.But this is a nice movie and it's definitely worth checking out.Watch Greedy and maybe you learn something.

Um not what I thought

I found this film entertaining but lacking in the story. I thought with all that talent this would be a better film.

Greedy

I enjoyed this movie. I always like Michael J. Fox and I liked how the movie correctly showed how greedy people can get. However, I didn't like how the uncle lied so much!!

An unusually wonderful movie!

I was forced to watch this movie with a friend. I have never heard of it until then. I found out that Micheal J. Fox was in it so I decided to watch it. It started out very different and then I was shocked to see how the family memebers were treating each other. This movie was a comedy, but a drama as well and I loved it. The humor was different, but funny all the same. I really, really liked this film and this is a deffinate purchase.

A good message... and, admitted, a few(too few?) laughs along the way

I have a (fairly) vast collection of VHS tapes. I rarely get rid of anything, especially movies. Given that, there are a few among them that I don't care all that much for... some, I've even forgotten. There are even two or three that I've only watched once, and never really felt like watching again... each time it came up as I searched through my collection of films for something to watch, I would cringe at the thought of sitting through it even one more time. This is one such film. I'm not entirely sure what compelled me to give it another chance... I read a quote or two, half-remembered how they were said, and recognized some names on the cast... Phil Hartman, Ed Begley Jr. and Jere Burns(in order of how talented and funny I'd rate them), all three of which I've seen elsewhere and grown to appreciate the talents of(Douglas and Fox were the only two actors I knew the first time I watched this), and I think those were the main contributors, the last of the two reasons being the most important(in fact, Hartman is one of the people on a short mental list of people that I want to watch all of(well, at least as far as the watchable ones go) the work of). As the opening credits come on, I nearly regretted this decision... but that went away fairly quickly after the film itself began. The plot is pretty good. The actors all fit their roles and perform quite well. The cinematography does its job fine, as well as the editing, even if they are a little weird at times(speaking as a film aficionado(and someone who enjoys using words from foreign languages in everyday life) as well as someone who's enjoyed the pleasure and the privilege of trying his hands at both, it seems like there were many situations(be it in the production or post-production phase; shooting or editing) where they couldn't quite think of a good solution how to get all the elements or properly frame the shots, so they just went with the best they could think of(which leaves a bit to be desired, at times). It isn't that huge a deal, though). All those elements are fine, if not downright good. The real problem here is the humor... in spite of some wit and some black comedy that is among the darkest I have seen, there just seems to be too little of the film's humor that works. The timing is occasionally off, and a lot of potential(not to mention comical talent) is wasted. For a comedy, this just doesn't provide enough laughs to keep you watching for almost two hours. What made it truly worth it for me, and the main reason I urge anyone who decides to give this film a chance is the moral... the message of the film(it alone lifted my rating above the average of a 5). It gives such a clear perspective on greed, one that I don't believe I've ever seen presented before(and certainly not so skillfully). I recommend this to any fan of comedies who is willing to accept a lesser comedy to get to the great message of it(which is neither preachy nor heavy-handed, as some the moral of some message-movies is). Maybe the biggest fans of the actors should avoid, though... you may hate for the sole reason of how little the biggest talents in the film get to do. 6/10

Unoriginal and typical, but not without charm

It's really impossible not to like a Michael J Fox movie - unless of course you don't like any Michael J Fox movies, and GREEDY was one that I had never heard of, and it turned out to be quite a little gem.Starting off like a worryingly 'seen-it-all-before' 80s movie, the injection of an intriguing screen chemistry between Fox and his 'Uncle Joe' Kirk Douglas makes this film immediately watchable. Nancy Travis was unfortunately miscast as Fox's wife (here was no chemistry whatsoever), who had nothing but lame comedy one-liners. But otherwise this was a charming film with a predictable, but feel-good ending. Definitely worth a look!

This is an important film for the whole family to see.

This is an important film for the whole family to see. Not because it's a work of art, because it isn't. However, the warning that this film is trying to give is that greed can be all consuming (In this case, trying to get Kirk Douglas's money). It shows how even the best of people can slowly be perverted into doing things that they normally would not. Not all at once but in stages, creeping up on them before they fully realise it. This is obviously most noticeable in Michael J Fox's character, being the central one but it's important to look at the others. Phil Hartman's is the most purely after the money from the start but the others range in increasing degrees with the amount of doubt about their motives and show some conscience before it is overriden by their stronger desire for money, even to the point of not following decent human behaviour that they normally wouldn't otherwise. Worth watching because there are many lessons to be learned and a couple of nice twists. Keeps you wrong-footed (quite literally) until the very end.

A lesson for life!

This is film is about a very basic instinct in all of us, simply put forth in the title "Greed".As the story unfolds the characters seem very familiar, people we have seen and known and loved. They are not evil people. They have slowly and simply given in to the lure of greed. Here is a story about a multi-millionaire uncle and his clan of relatives each trying to beat the other in pleasing their uncle to get quoted in his will. Even the nicest and most honest of them all (Michael J Fox) slowly get sucked into the plot and get into this run for money. The story is an eye-opener. It gives us an opportunity to look into ourselves and our own set of values. It makes us introspect and re-prioritise our lives. How many times have we ourselves given in to the rut? Without meaning to hurt how many times have we actually fooled ourselves into believing that what we are doing is for a noble cause when actually all that we were actually interested in was the money?the ending is great. It brings back faith to people who have become cynical enough to believe that good does not beget good in return always. It raises our hopes and makes us feel good about being simple and honest with ourselves. it is a must watch movie for the whole family.

Watch for Jimmy Durante!

Michael J. Fox, Ed Begley,Jr and the legendary Kirk Douglas are ALL likable performers- no question about it. Too bad they're stuck playing TOTALLY despicable and UNlikable characters in this movie! After being introduced to one greedy, scheming relative after another for the zillionth time, WE GET IT! The love of money is EVIL-DUH! Even those characters the audience is *supposed* to think are likable (Fox's too-loyal girlfriend and principled hippie dad)fail to be. The girlfriend keeps threatening to leave Fox if he doesn't walk away from this mess- again and again. After the zillionth empty threat instead of thinking he's risking losing a good girl (like the script would want us to believe), I got the idea she was JUST as unprincipled and manipulative as the rest as she definitely STAYS to the end. Oh, and his dad was portrayed too much like a utopian hippy to be believable.I DO urge everyone who has the chance to watch the opening credits for the Late Jimmy Durante to sing his signature song of 'Inka Dinka Dinka Doo'! Durante definitely steals the show because he is the ONLY vaguely likable character in this whole movie! Yeah, Fox does a good imitation of Durante but is it worth going through the REST of the movie to see? I think not.
