This is the worst movie I have ever seen (no exaggeration)

posted on 26 Aug 2009

The only reason I gave this movie a star is because that's the least I could give. They missed the children's demographic by numerously threatening the fate of the lead character with unrealistically evil looking whales and seals and making inappropriate innuendo. They missed the casual movie-goers demographic with numerous plot holes and missed both demographics with the nearly absent amount of humor (Robin Williams had a few good lines). The trailers show penguins havin' fun, but the movie shows humans invading and hurting penguins and their homes only to change their minds when the lead character tap dances for visitors and the zoo. This can't be called a movie so much as hippie propaganda. Do not ever see this movie!

There is something very wrong with me.

There is obviously something very wrong with me. I did not appreciate or like the animation process for "Happy Feet". It seems to me that the animators took one of the more adorable creatures in real life and made them bland. The adult emperor penguins have a kind of creepy quality about them as they talk and dance.Don't get me started on the music which was abysmal in every possible way.As a progressive, I am not against the idea of a movie having something to say, but I believe the first rule of movie-making with a message would be make it entertaining. Nobody likes to get hit over the head with a movie's message. If they were trying to simplify it for kids, I think it goes without saying that the message of this movie would be lost on anyone but the most observant children under the age of 10.This is the most dismal movie I have seen in quite some time, but as the movie ended (I even hated the way the did the end credits), my mouth agape at what I just saw, the vast majority of the audience was cheering, so, as stated before, there must be something wrong with me.

Fun for the whole family! (If everyone is under 10)

This movie is fun for the whole family! That is, if everyone in your family is under 10 years old. I gave this film a 3/10 because it did make me laugh a few times. The overly-stereotyped little "mexican" penguins were the only good part of this movie. I especially liked the scene were they mock the leopard seal.Mumble is cute when he's baby Mumble. But, when Mumble grows up, he is no longer cute. He's awkward looking. I did not like the way he was animated throughout the film after his fluffy baby stage.I did like some of the animation, though. Like the leopard seal, for instance. I think they did a good job on the way the ice looked, the water, the birds. The lighting was beautiful. The penguins themselves were kind of strange, however. But why did they make the female penguins have "breasts" and hour-glass figures? I found that kind of odd.I don't see any reason for anyone over 10 to really enjoy this film. But at the same time this movie is so long, I don't seen anyone under 10 sitting through the entire thing. Towards the end of the film, it gets really WEIRD. Who knew emperor penguins were strict Catholics that banned dancing and told other penguins they had to be "devout" and they had to "repent" for their sins? It started getting really creepy...Also, all the scenes with the humans were REALLY odd. Especially the end sequence. What the hell? I would not recommend this film to anyone my age. However, I can see why kids would enjoy the visual stimulation, even if they don't catch on to the stereotypes and creepiness factor.

Wonderful!

I took my children and young cousin to see this movie and they, as well as myself loved it! My youngest child is five and she sat through the entire movie. From the reaction in the audience, it seemed that the adults enjoyed the movie more than the kids did. The singing was fantastic. And the Mexican penguins were too funny. Kudos to Robin Williams. You really couldn't tell that the accents were fake. He sounded very authentic. I would recommend this movie to everyone, even those people without children. I knew the movie would have a "happy ending" because the kids would've been very dissatisfied had it happened any other way.

Unengaging

As a father of three young'uns I have developed (however unwillingly) quite a knowledge of movies aimed at children. It is a rare movie that can find the balance between entertaining kids and adults. Unfortunately, this movie does neither. The best, and most honest, critics are children, and my children tired of this movie very quickly.Of course, the Hollywood cognescenti were falling over themselves to elevate this movie in the eyes of the public and the reason why became blatantly obvious from the first few minutes. Personally I would rather sit through anti-PC Looney Tunes than bow to the Follywood elite. One extra line to get IMDb to accept this comment!

Amazing CG

The story about a little penguin who can't sing but can tap dance is pretty good up to the last half hour. And normal. The little penguin Mumble is sooo cute. And the tap dancing is just so cute I don't know why the other penguins don't get it. The ending is a bit weird but..But the graphics! The whole thing is just crazy! The snow, the rocks, the fur, the wet fur, the melting ice, the wind, the snowflakes, the sunlight, the setting-sunlight, the water, the ice, the snow on the ice, and the snow the penguins tap on! Crazy!! Crazy!!!! And I'm saying this from a CG animator's point of view. The final half hour was like a dream (in a good and bad way). They actually have real humans in it! The direction of the story about Mumble going into the human world was weird in a way, but I think they did it just because they could! A lot of parts I seriously lost track of which human shots were real and which were computer animated. If the reason why they lead the story to human world is because they could do great mixing of CG and real live action, well.. they did a wonderful job.Definitely worth watching on the big screen. Even if it's just for the visuals.

Not a just-for-kids

Just in points my views on this film: 1) It is not a true children film. I was fooled by the cover and the fact of "dancing and singing animated penguins" as well. No, this movie is far more. Kids might enjoy the cute animation and all sorts of flashy-stuff, but be prepared, that not necessarily.2) If you see propaganda and conspiracy everywhere, this movie will set you off. If you can take things more lightly, do watch.3) I loved this film. I take points down to 7, because so many - me too - are fooled by the covers and presentation of the film, that we wait to see something Ice Age or Madagascar - like, but no. This film is much more, something different.4) If you like to see movies with a moral message, something that is more than just screaming and shouting, than this movie is a must.

Bait & Switch! Not a good kids' movie

The first hour was fun (although sexier than I'd like my 4 year old to see). They made this look like family fun in the previews, and yet there were way too many songs talking about "turning you on", "I'll make love to you", etc. Definitely will need to have the sex talk with your kids after this movie, if they're tuned into that aspect at all - my word! The last half hour turned the movie into a depressing, "people are horrible and should just vanish off the earth so the animals can live happily without us" film. Any "lesson" they were trying to teach, or point they were trying to make fell flat, because they made you feel like they'd just started a whole new movie, and it wasn't the cute one with funny Robin Williams and the little dancing penguin anymore. They promoted the heck out of this movie as fun and laughs. I don't care how much singing and laughs there were in the first hour. The last 30 minutes made this film a total waste of time. I want my money back.

Animal activism came as a surprise

I had seen the commercials and the little penguin rapping, "Don't push me 'cause I am close to the edge..." had me eager to see this animated film. I understood the movie would be about being different and learning how to live and love yourself and fit in by staying true to you. And I was hoping for a lot of tap dancing penguin. The movie took an unexpected and awkward turn when the main character Mumble tries to win the hearts of the penguins by finding out what is happening to all the fish. The last 20 minutes seemed very out of place and almost like an after thought as Mumble finds giant fishing boats and chases them to the United States (fron Antarctica) and then ends up in a very sad zoo situation, only to be electronically tagged and brought back to his family and friends. Apparently to get food, all they have to do is dance for the people, which will stop the fishing, and get Mumble's father to dance. The voices were disappointing, neither Nicole Kidman nor Hugh Jackman ever made their characters likable, and the best characters didn't get enough screen time. The animation was amazing and the scenes were there was tap dancing were lots of fun. But the confusing and disjointed message about safe fishing and animal rights made the end of the movie kind of a downer, and was something you never saw coming from the commercials.

Beautifully Animated But Somewhat Superficial Penguin Musical Adventure

posted on 18 Aug 2009

Mumble is a young Emperor penguin who loves to dance, but is shunned by his tribe because he cannot sing. Befriended by a gang of little Adelie penguins, and curious about the outside world, Mumble is determined to find out why the fish are disappearing and if he can use his talents to restore the natural balance.World's best animated dancing penguin movie. Whilst I might not like it as much as Shrek or Cars, this Australian flick is still pretty irresistible family fun, and the quality of the computer animation is outstanding throughout. Some sequences - such as when Mumble and the gang slip-slide down the mountain - push CG techniques to the absolute limit with breathtaking visual imagination. Although the film has a fairly limited pictorial scope (it's all penguins and ice-floes) it's never less than eye-popping. However, the plot, which borrows heavily from two Hans Christian Andersen stories (The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid) is a bit thin for a whole movie I'm afraid - how many musical penguin numbers can you stage before getting repetitious ? There are a few fine action scenes, a great score by John Powell, some cool use of songs (The Beach Boys' Do It Again and Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five's The Message) and gifted director Miller pulls off some stunning moments, such as the sudden three-shot pull-back of Mumble in the zoo to the Earth from space, but overall it's a bit too cutesy. The voice cast are good, with Jackman doing a great Elvis take and Weaving as a dour Scottish zealot, but Williams steals the show (as in Aladdin), as both narrator and two separate characters, such as when he berates the Emperors for ostracising Mumble with, "We sing the heart of our true friend, Mumble. Joo are a nation of peeny-weeny, pibbling, pickolini, piddly-diddly !". Dedicated to Australian naturalist Steve Irwin, who plays one of the elephant seals, and who was tragically killed by a stingray just prior to release. I'd really like to see this on a double-bill with my favourite of Miller's movies, Mad Max 2.

This film inspires hate towards anything non-penguin, including people...

When I first saw the previews for this film, I was really looking forward to it. It looked really fun, and the voice of Robin Williams was definitely very catchy. When I walked out of the theater after having seen it, I was really disappointed. This by far was the worst computer animated movie I have seen yet.Whenever I go to see computer animated films aimed at reaching out to family audiences, I look for good, innocent fun. Instead, this movie tried to depress me. The director, whose name I really don't care about because this movie was awful, tried to make me feel bad for a penguin that couldn't sing, but who instead had an innate ability to tap dance. The writers and creators of this film tried to use this as a vehicle to make feel bad for the Mumbles, voiced by Elijah Wood, and his inability to sing. It only gets worse from here. The only good part of this film was the voice talents of Robin Williams and the other Hispanic-accented penguins. They were humorous, but not humorous enough to lighten up the mood of the entire film. I liked the characters: they were fun and enjoyable and they didn't try to make me feel depressed. What also bothered me about this film was the political agenda embedded within the film. Sure environmental issues are important, but I didn't pay money to listen about how humans are responsible for the so-called "depleting" fish population, which these penguins utilize as a natural resource. To make the film even more political, the writers thought that audiences would enjoy seeing a penguin "abducted" by humans, referred to as aliens in the film. Mumbles, who tries to discover the true reason behind the cause of the scarce resource of fish, is eventually caught by humans and sent to a zoo. The writers tried to do their best to make the living conditions at a zoo seem so terrible for animals, and they tried to do it from an animal perspective. This, I believe, is misinforming because if you see how animals are cared for in a good number of big city zoos, animals are provided with great health-care; which most wild animals do not have. By this point of the film, I was pretty upset... I was upset because they used real footage of people, as opposed to animations. I paid to see an animated film, not an animated film with clips of real people integrated throughout.I also hated the sexual references made by Robin Williams' character, Lovelace. This is a family film: that's not what I paid to see.So besides the fact that this movie tried to make me feel bad for people with disabilities, hate seals, seagulls, and killer whales, and over-looking the fact that this film tried to make me hate myself; I don't see any reason to not like this movie... a lot.

Deep and powerful!... more than just cute fluffy penguins

I thought I was going to see a very well animated kids movie involving cute and funny characters, and a sympathetic heart warming story, such as Finding Nemo, Shrek, or Toy Story, but Happy Feet is that and much more. In fact, I think that none of the kids in the theater, including my 8 year old brother, liked it as much as I did, a 20 year old college student fond of movies such as The Matrix, Fight Club, and Kill Bill.If you look beyond the great animation, and the cutesy characters and storyline you will find a film with deep and powerful messages regarding the state of humanity. It's about our relationship with nature, art, the human spirit, and that which is beyond us (perhaps all films, or works of art can be, but this one does it well, and I happened to notice that). All in all, a great movie! Definitely one of my favorites, if not my favorite. Never thought I would say something like this for a 'kids' movie.Do not underestimate it for it being a PG rated, 'kid aimed', animated film. This film goes pretty deep. I recommend it for everyone.

Excellent movie!

Fantastic movie with lots of synchronized dancing and blood-pumping music. It is heartwarming with lots of cute characters, a positive message and funny characters. I love that it's unique and addresses the fact that humans and animals can communicate successfully without words. The energy of the actors is inspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The writers managed to use a theme, specifically the persevering outcast, in a unique and fresh way. The movie is a perfect outlet for Robin Williams, as his portrayal of Ramon is unprecedented. I was further impressed by the actors' singing and interaction; it was as if they were in the room together performing. The tap sequences were so well synched it seemed as if the editors spent hours in the editing booth perfecting the scenes. It is a joy to watch, adults and children alike. Oh, and the soundtrack is addicting.

Happy Feet

I thought this was the most insipid, banal children's movie that I have seen in a long time..Since the film has been doing so well at the box office, I thought I would check it out: I needed a break from the heavily laden feeling the holiday brings on for me. But this movie was not the antidote..It was so fluffy that I thought better of the intense dramas playing in the neighboring theaters...If you can envision MTV videos with penguins instead of people singing, than you know what Happy Feet is about. The plot was so one dimensional, there were no sub plots and if I knew there would be a plethora of birds breaking out in song and dance, I would have brought a rifle and saved the theater from one more sugarier scene. Who is finding this good anyway..just people under 12?

Happy Feet should have been left out in the cold

The story lacked development and direction, ultimately leaving me scratching my head to exactly how the conclusion, and many other details in the plot, came about. Most of the characters lacked development and depth, which led me to have little to no empathy for our protagonist and his cohorts. Instead, these staples for any good movie were replaced with a cute animated tap dancing penguin, a few cheap laughs courtesy of a washed up Robin Williams, and elaborate song and dance numbers that featured a wide variety of recognizable pop songs. And on top of that, the filmmakers had the audacity to shamelessly preach their politics as if that excuses it for its shortcomings. And that's not a slam against the liberal ideas of this movie that many have complained about because be they liberal or conservative, sloppily tacking on your ideas about pollution and the environment at the end of your already underdeveloped film doesn't qualify as a meaningful message, even if your target audience is ten and under.Pixar has made it abundantly clear that family films don't have to substitute style for substance. Their competitors need to learn this as well.

I loved this movie

I absolutely loved this movie. I took my 4 year old daughter - and she loved it as well. We sat on the side of the theater because I knew that my daughter wouldn't be able to stay in her seat once the music started and I was right. She danced through the whole thing - closing credits included (we were the last ones out of the theater). We have been to this movie six times and we have both enjoyed it as much the last time as we did the first time. I will be buying this the day that it is released - and we will watch it over and over again. Did this movie have some adult humor - yes, but nothing that couldn't be explained on the off chance that an older child might wonder about it. We watch nature programs as a family quite regularly and we talk about the content of those - so I think we can handle any questions that might come up about cartoon penguins.

Propaganda and Misrepresentation !!!

posted on 14 Aug 2009

Normally slamming movies is NOT my thing, but this attempt of mishmash by George Miller makes me cross the line !!! A CGI movie about Penguins should be a sure fire hit with the kiddies, but mix in alleged environmental issues, and disjointed scenes and you get "Happy Feet" !! This boring and misguided effort is truly a work of CRAP !!!Throw in some big name stars Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, and Nicole Kidman to name a few, and you begin to see a film equal to the wasting of talent such as "Nothing But Trouble " !!!Mumbles(Elijah Wood), is the outcast penguin, who of course is different, can't sing, can dance, and he LOOKS different !!! Wow !!!So , the village of penguins is being threatened because of a shortage of fish !!! O.K.., so in order to make himself redeemable, Mumbles set out to find out why !!!The story takes Mumbles thru a series of adventures , one being that he is lunch, but you can't eat the main character, so that is BAD !!!There are other leaps of logic and untruths sprinkled thru the film, too numerous to mention, but the point is the story is not about "Happy Feet", it is misguided propaganda that people aren't sensitive to environmental issues ! Duh, yes they are !!! It is Governments that don't do the will of the people !!!So , watch "Bambi" or "Cinderella " or "Cars" , but skip this crap, even if there in an occasional beautiful scene, not enough to carry the movie. There were a few kids in the audience, but the laughs were very few !!! I give this film a 1, only because it is on film !

Wonderfully animated adventure with funky penguins - what's not to like?

posted on 08 Aug 2009

Going over the last few movies I've seen, I noticed a worrying pattern. "PS - I Love You", "Monster's Ball" and "The Horse Whisperer" are very female-friendly, dramatic movies with little room for light humour. So I was looking forward to this as nothing says 'light humour' more than tap-dancing penguins and once you get used to the rather unconventional set-up, "Happy Feet" reveals itself to have a traditional fairy-tale at its heart and a stark ecological message wrapped around it. Oh and lots of funky musical numbers.Elijah Wood voices Mumble, a fluffy Emperor penguin who is unable to sing like all the other penguins in his community. His parents Memphis (Hugh Jackman) and Norma Jean (Nicole Kidman) try their best to encourage Mumble to sing but his real talent lays in tap-dancing which upsets the elders who then force Mumble into an icy exile. Stumbling across a group of Adelie penguins with Hispanic accents, Mumble finds his gift for dance is treasured instead of feared and his quest for acceptance is complete. But Mumble isn't content with that - determined to win the heart of Gloria (Brittany Murphy) and the acceptance of his own kind, Mumble and his new amigos are joined by Rockhopper penguin Lovelace (Robin Williams) in a quest to discover the reason for the shortage of fish which threatens the extinction of all life in the Antarctic.Like I said, it's an unusual world we're introduced into but once you're used to the sight of singing penguins and Broadway-style dance numbers, "Happy Feet" has plenty to offer for viewers of all ages. Kids will love the fast-paced action scenes, the comic touches between the Adelie Amigos (primarily supplied by Robin Williams as Ramon) and the sheer energy and enthusiasm of Mumble as he taps, moonwalks and boogies his way through the film. Whether the message that being different is OK will go down is up to them - it's pretty much rammed down your throat from the off so only the stupid can miss it. Adults will appreciate the ecological moral of the story as well as the truly fantastic levels of animation. At times, it's impossible to tell what is live-action and what isn't - until the montage of bickering humans appeared, I thought it was all animated. It's so good that you forget its a cartoon and although I'm reluctant to admit it, it looks better than anything Pixar has so far produced including their latest effort "WALL-E".It might be "The Ugly Ducking" on ice but "Happy Feet" is as good a family film as I've seen in recent months. The music is superb and performed with reasonable competence though Murphy's voice cannot match that of Freddy Mercury during her version of "Somebody To Love". But unless you're in a straight-jacket, you'll find it impossible to stop yourself tapping your feet or even singing along with our feathered friends on screen. It's cute, it's smart and it looks absolutely fabulous. The only real issues I have are with character recognition - nearly all the penguins look the same with the exception of Mumble, Lovelace and the Amigos. The other problem is with Williams - voicing two characters in the same film was always going to lead to them sounding similar and throw in his trademark machine-gun delivery and it's very difficult to understand what he's actually saying - Ramon is practically incomprehensible though Lovelace is much clearer. But "Happy Feet" is still a quality family film, filled with enough adventure, excitement and reflection to satisfy younger viewers and their parents.

Happy Fluff - Nothing New

posted on 06 Aug 2009

It is clear that the idea of this movie came from the "March of the Penguins" documentary. I expected more...The movie attempts to capitalize on the cuteness of the penguin and on amazing life cycle of the Emporer Penguins. This film doesn't even really give lip service to the almost unbelievable feats performed by the Emporer Penguin in the harshest environment on earth. Then again, the story was not intended to retell the story of the penguin... This is where the film fails - the only thing original here is the penguins themselves. The animation and CG effects are top-rate but the story is unoriginal and predictable. Even the musical selections are unoriginal, although it was interesting to hear a revival of the 1980's "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash - how that song relates the life of the Emporer Penguin is anybody's guess. This film is "Happy Fluff". The shallow attempts at dealing with real messages such as pollution and overfishing are just that - shallow. Even still the movie does attempt to make us aware of these issues and on how they affect our animal neighbors which is more than I can say about other recent animated features. The film does have its moments and is better than some other recent animated flicks such as "Shark Tale". It was not a waste of time or money but it just did not live up to the hype. If you want the real thing see "March of the Penguins".In summary - excellent cg - but unoriginal.

While most seem to like the surprising issues confronted in this movie, it mostly seemed to spoil it for me, seeing as all I knew about it beforehand was that there was a bunch of dancing penguins, which isn't just borderline silly. There was absolutely no way I could take it seriously. So when the darker story played out, It was as if someone had set up a knock-knock joke, in which the joke is that my mother had died. Of course, should you be interested in this movie, remember that it's not the silly penguiny dance-fest that the previews make it out to be. It was really expectations that ruined it for me, but if you go not expecting a lighthearted, purely silly anthropomorphism of the penguin species, then the film won't ruin your mood.
