this movie is good
posted on 12 Aug 2009hatchet the movie is really good, it has some funny scenes and a lot of bloody horror. this movie is 8 out of 10 because a horror movie does not have funny scenes.you should really watch this if you like horrors because you would need someone with you to watch this.also just to let you know this film is a 18 and i can say i would even rate this as a 18. this movie is on DVD now so if you would want to see it i would suggest that you can rent it out at blockbusters. thank you for reading this and if you watch this movie enjoy. p.s. this movie is also on the internet for download, or go to this website which is legal as to watch this movie in full for free. www.watch-movies.net
Loved it!!
posted on 08 Aug 2009I recently went to see the debut of Hatchet in NYC, and it was great: a perfect mix of graphic violence and comedy that had me screaming, cheering, cringing and laughing out loud from beginning to end. Writer/director Adam Green is the real deal, not trying to make a quick buck by following the latest box office trends. This movie pays homage to the classic horror movies (Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Candyman, etc.), and Green does it with class and wit. The actors play their parts well - they are convincing in the horror scenes and hysterical in between. Be warned: the violence is very graphic, and there is a lot of topless nudity. If you can stomach it, and if you like this genre of film, then this is the movie for you. Hatchet is pure entertainment!
Excellent Film, Great Comedy and Gore!
posted on 02 Aug 2009There are some odd parts, and the lighting is comic-book style in some spots, and too noticeable. But overall this is a great film with many redeeming qualities. Fun characters, funny comedy bits and great gore and scares. Kane Hodder does a great job scaring the hell out the actors in this one, and he'll get the audience as well. The soundtrack was a little ill-fitting at times, and didn't always work well for the mood , but they may have been going for something just a little different.New kill methods make it interesting and unpredictable for the most part. Nice legend to work into the genre, and a great revival of the chop-em-up slasher film. Oh, and the ending is perfect. Not what you would really expect at all. Not what you would want anyway.
Fans of graphic dismemberment will love it
posted on 31 Jul 2009Old-fashioned ultra-gorefest allows a half-hour of crass humor and amateur-porn titillation to go by before a motley crew of idiot Louisiana tourists start getting picked off by an ax murderer, one by one -- and not a moment too soon. Re-edited for an R rating after the MPAA slapped it with an NC-17, though the uncensored version should find plenty of twisted takers on homevid. The basic plot follows the hero Ben, played by Joel Moore (Dodgeball) and his buddy Marcus as they party in New Orleans. Ben is a nice enough, nice enough looking guy. Marcus is more outgoing and self-assured. Ben has gone to New Orleans to forget about having just been dumped by his girlfriend of eight years. Marcus' intention is to sleep with as many women (not what he calls them) as possible. From Ben's vantage point, drunk women flashing their boobs and throwing themselves at him is no balm for the pain of rejection! The Haunted Swamp Tour is a nighttime boat ride through the Louisiana swamp. Accompanying Ben and Marcus are a Chinese tour guide who sounds like Boss Hogg (Parry Shen), two porn actresses (Mercedes McNab and Joleigh Fiorevanti), a middle-aged married couple (Richard Riehle and Patrika Darbo), a filmmaker of dubious distinction (Joel Murray), and an attractive, mysterious young woman (Tamara Feldman).
Bloody good fun
posted on 27 Jul 2009Among the precious few only horror films I have seen and truly enjoyed in the past couple of years, this small, low-budget effort became something of a cause célèbre with genre fans, owing to the comic trailers ("It's not a remake. It's not a sequel. And it's not based on a Japanese one"). I was very happy to hear that it was screened at the Frightfest a second year running, apparently due to popular demand. Bravo Green & Co., your film belies its modest resources brilliantly. While not original, the film makes a joke out of its origins, as a group of tourists go on a nocturnal swamp tour. Inevitably, they are set upon by a dark, deformed being, modelled on the basic backwoods monster, who cuts them down one by one. Ostensibly a horror comedy, the film is beautifully shot and lit, the murky swamp surroundings visualised with deep oranges, reds and yellows. The violence was ferocious but managed to be slapstick as well as frightening, and while the characters initially seem mere fodder, their petty squabbles and ludicrous survival plans made for oddly sophisticated comedy. One scene where they debate about what monstrosity might be hiding in a hedge had the cinema in gales of laughter. What was most surprising was the element of real terror underpinning the parody: one scene in which a girl discovers her father's corpse and her subsequent hysterics was unexpected, likewise the sudden disappearances and labyrinthine swamp. For all its humour, the film functioned as a true horror film, and a true horror comedy, a quality precious few other - more expensive (no, I'm not a fan of Shaun of the Dead) - productions have achieved.
A tribute to the slasher that shines where other "tributes" have failed
posted on 11 Jul 2009The line at the top of the poster reads "It's not a remake. It's not a sequel. And it's not based on a Japanese one". What it is in my mind is a tribute. A tribute to the slasher flicks of the mid to late 80's. And it does this nicely.Hatchet is story of Victor Crowley. After some tragic misfortunes as a child, his "ghost" roams the swamp basically taking out anyone who enters it. Though in actuality, he's not a ghost at all. So...naturally a group of teens (and two older people) enter his swamp after taking a "ghost tour". Naturally they get stranded. Naturally Victor comes for them. Sound cliché'? Of course it does. But it never tries to be anything it isn't and that's where this film shines. What you get is everything you should expect from a film like this. Everything that made films of the mid to late 80s in the slasher sub genre special. You get the over the top cheesy dialog filled with one liners. You get pointless nudity. You get one liners. It's all here. Where this film shines above other attempts at "tributes to the slasher genre" rest completely in the kills and how they are executed. The violence is great in this film. Victor is one mean ass SOB. I didn't care for the look of the character, or even his mannerisms (The growling and waving his arms around like he's a crazed monkey). But he was totally brutal when he got his hands on people. (The old lady got it worse than anyone in my opinion) So if you want a movie you can watch that takes you back to the olden days of the slasher film. A movie you don't have to think about when you watch it. You definitely need to see Hatchet. It does the slasher film justice. Think of it as Madman + Venom + steroids.
Funny for horror fans, lame for avid movie-goers
posted on 09 Jul 2009This movie was great on a number of different scales...but only if you weren't looking to watch a "Shawshank Redemption" or a "Saving Private Ryan." It was definitely made to slightly poke fun at a lot of the typical horror clichés while trying also to make a good movie. The main problem with this movie is the main actor Joel Moore as the lead. He's a decent actor, but only in C-movie work. Choosing him for this movie was definitely a mistake but there really is no one else who could play the role that he was given. His character is one that shouldn't even exist because it contradicts all modes of a human personality. Nonetheless, if u watch the movie with no care and an open mind...no judgment...you'll enjoy it because it has some clever kills and funny lines. If you want a quality horror flick though, steer clear.
Go see this movie!!
posted on 27 Jun 2009I went to a screening of Hatchet this past summer. I saw a listing for it on the Fangoria website, and, although I didn't really know what to expect, I headed down to see it. As a rabid fan of 80's horror movies, the thought of a movie that was a throwback to the slasher films of my youth seemed really promising. Let me tell you, Hatchet did not disappoint. I can honestly say that in 22 years of watching horror movies, I have rarely seen one that offered gore this intense and inventive. Although there is certainly some comic relief here, this is not a "wink. wink. nudge. nudge" kind of horror movie. The gore is fierce and unapologetic. Think "Maniac." Think "Friday the 13th IV." The effects, proudly produced without CGI, are awe-inspiring. Watching this movie surrounded by horror fans was an experience I can only compare to my experience seeing "Evil Dead II" when it was first released. There was so much screaming, laughing and cheering in the theatre, that I'm sure I lost a lot of the dialogue. Luckily, the dialogue, while fine, is always quickly followed by yet another kill- yet another opportunity for Green, and his effects guys, to impress us. Screw Bush, this is real shock and awe.My hope is that when the film is finally released that it isn't pillaged by the ratings board. Just like it says on it's poster, this is good old fashioned American horror. Go see it. You won't be sorry
An Unscheduled U-Turn
posted on 17 Jun 2009I went to see this film in part due to praise heaped on it by previous reviewers who had described it as clever and a fresh addition to the genre. And it was .. for at least the first ~45 minutes or so.I was immediately drawn in, the dialogue was notably above par for the genre, full of witty quips and more subtle bits of humor that reference horror classics. In the opening scenes we see notable cameos from Robert Englund ("Nightmare On Elm Street" series) and Tony Todd (of "Candyman" series fame). A respectable flashback sequence is included to introduce the "Hatchet" back story. And so the movie takes off running, seemingly quite well. Fresh and unique, forging a new path through the wastleland of redundant slasher flicks as "Sean of the Dead" and "Scream" had done in previous years.Unfortunately about half way through, this movie does a complete about-face. The witty banter is replaced with idiotic dribble more reminiscent of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" than the first half of the film. It's almost as if they fired an adept writer halfway through the script and replaced him with the proverbial thousand monkeys on a thousand typewriters. At this point the dam breaks, and the tired clichés pour through in droves. We are treated to a prolonged scene of foliage inspection and other such nonsense to fill the reel between death scenes. The characters repeatedly wait to flee screaming in panic until *after* they have disabled or incapacitated the title baddie. The only dread anticipation built in the second half is whether this film will be the schoolbus that was hit by the train, or the one that managed to avoid it.Once the gore fest begins, it is eerily reminiscent of early "Troma" titles, over the top and fatuous. The "Hatchet" character even seems like it might have been modeled from the "Toxic Avenger". I can appreciate the merits of a lawn sprinkler arterial spray or projectile vomiting, on occasion, but modern film gore effects really have no excuse to still be of that "BrainDead" visual quality.Despite the dual personalities of this film, I think it still manages to hack out a few good parts. - 5/10 -
Doesn't live up to the hype, but it will undeniably please some hardcore horror fans.
posted on 11 Jun 2009A deformed, monstrous, bayou-dwelling psychopath who survived a hatchet to the face as a child lives on to terrorize the *really* stupid chump victims taking a tour of his domain in the present day. While I wouldn't consider this the second coming of the genre, director Adam Green does show a bit of flair. Made as an obvious homage to the splatter flicks that him and many of us grew up watching, he does stage the various bloody attacks with considerable panache. Any gore hound watching is bound to be pleased to some degree. The picture also has a respectable amount of backwoods atmosphere. Taking place mostly at night, it settles into a pretty consistent groove once it kicks into gear. The characters are so moronic, standard-issue, and pathetic that the killer is the one most people will be likely to be rooting for - but that doesn't make this any different from many of the slasher films of yore.Green was able to get some genuine horror icons to participate in this; fans will love seeing Robert Englund, Tony Todd (although these two are relegated to brief, disappointing cameo roles) and particularly Kane Hodder, portraying the horrific monster as well as its father in flashback scenes. The assorted, expendable victims are played by folks like Joel David Moore, Deon Richmond (who has some good, funny moments), Joel Murray (brother of Bill M.), Tamara Feldman (she's the one required to give us much of the exposition), Mercedes McNab, Parry Shen, and others.Other than the various gruesome dispatches, what I did appreciate about it was its full-steam-ahead approach. It had an energy to it that was enjoyable. The incredibly predictable ending was an unsatisfying letdown, but overall it's an appropriate enough valentine to vintage slasher fare and I had a fairly good time watching it.7/10
The most entertaining movie in years!
posted on 30 May 2009I had read a lot about HATCHET online over the last year and thought it could be a nice little horror flick to enjoy like Wrong Turn or Cabin Fever. Last week, I was finally able to watch it at the Fantasy Film Fest in Germany. It seemed I wasn't the only one waiting for it because the theatre was packed. Every single seat was taken. And right from the beginning you knew you had a winner. We all had a huge blast with HATCHET and the crowd just LOVED it! It sure was one of the highlights of the festival. You have to know that I am a big movie buff since I was a kid with a special love for the thriller and horror genre. I am collecting movies for ages and my apartment is filled with over two-thousand DVDs of all kind of genres, not to mention hundreds of laser discs and uncountable videotapes from the old days. This meaning I watch and know a lot of movies and these are just the ones I like. But watching HATCHET last week I have to say it was the most entertaining movie I saw in many YEARS! And its not just entertaining, it is really really good, too.First of all I didn't expect it to be so funny which was a big and pleasant surprise. Great dialogue and wonderful odd characters. The choice to make the goofy nerd the lead character was brilliant and with Joel Moore you have the one and only actor who could do this the right way. He really made it special. But overall the casting was superb. Every part, no matter how small it was, was perfectly cast. And what can I say about those slasher moments. Since the golden 80s I haven't seen deaths on film like that. I was close to tears. Of course they are totally over the top but that is what you wish for in a movie like that. But the biggest surprise is director Adam Green. While watching HATCHET I was thinking all the time what it must be like having him making a straight up comedy. His comedic writing, the timing and of course the directing was simply brilliant. Most importantly it wasn't just a collection of jokes. Here everything fits together, its one piece in the end. This is the stuff the really good movies are made of.For me HATCHET is winner on every level. It is THE perfect midnight matinée movie. I totally love it.
Flawed but surprisingly entertaining
posted on 26 May 2009Over-the-Top Gory and Violent Louisiana Swamp Slasher Comedy.Good: The cast and acting works. Well above average for the genre. The violence and gore is mostly kept on-screen and in focus. No CGI, just good old special effects. Extra points for real vomiting. While this is a pretty gory movie, it is actually a comedy, with varying degrees of success. The violence serves as a comedic aspect parallel to the jokes. And it works, for the most part. The killings, that is.Bad: The verbal humor is admittedly also better than average for the genre, but it gets too much for my taste. This movie doesn't even try to be scary, and the cast are yapping on, sit-com style, throughout the movie. Luckily they haven't screwed it up as much as they could have, and the verbal humor does serve as a build-up to hysterical bursts of laughter during the killing scenes. It works and is funny at times, but it's just too much overall. The villain's back story is thin, goofy and uninteresting. Crowley himself works sometimes, but sometimes not. He's certainly no new Jason or Michael in my opinion. However, despite all its flaws, I felt entertained. While there are much fewer and "shorter" killings in this film, I can't remember seeing something this in-your-face gory since Braindead. The over-the-top gore and the sickly hilarious ways in which it's presented are this movie's strong points, while the plot and (partially) the humor are its weak points.
There's hope for the horror genre after all!
posted on 26 May 2009A group of tourists get stranded out in the middle of nowhere where they must trudge through the swamplands after their boat has sunk, unfortunately the place is rumored to be haunted by a hideously deformed maniac, I say unfortunate because the rumors prove true as each one of them falls victim to a hulking, hideously deformed maniac that loves ripping people to pieces in very gross ways. Soon the remaining tourists ban together to try & kill him, but VICTOR the horribly mutated killer is about to make sure that doesn't happen! I heard a lot about HATCHET from various fans & horror movie websites all of the reviews (With the exception of all the big shot critics but then who cares what they think? they usually hate movies we as fans love to begin with!) were positive & is the film as good as everyone is saying? In my opinion Yes! but only to a degree. The film is true 1980's style horror with the gratuitous nudity, over the top, extremely bloody kills, the dumb characters, great monster make-up & plenty of laughs & creepy atmosphere to help it rise above more currently released horror outings, though considering how bad horror movies have been lately the film-makers didn't have to try very hard. The film is well acted & surprisingly well directed & horror fans will get a kick out of the scary monster make-up & gross out kills. On the downside of things, the films characters are all pretty annoying, making it hard for us to root for any of these people & the film slows down after it's gruesome/funny opening sequence when it does finally pick up, it lacks any real tension it should have had. Still as a whole, the film succeeds in giving horror fans what they want. ADAM GREEN is really talented & you can tell he has a general fondness for horror, within time he could very well be up the with greats like WES CARVEN, JOHN CARPENTER, DARIO ARGENTO, SEAN CUNNINGHAM etc. Worth a look for horror fans with a neat surprise twist ending. Despite being top billed ROBERT ENGLUND (Freddy from the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series) & TONY TODD (CANDYMAN 1-3) only have small cameo's. Is it the best horror film ever made? No, but is it a fun horror flick? Oh Yeah!***1/2 stars
One of the worst movies I have seen this year!
posted on 24 May 2009Well I decided to watch Hatchet after the relatively high rating on this site. All I can say is I don't know what movie everyone else watched but Hatchet did not even deserve the 1 star that I gave it. The characters and the plot were so painfully stupid that I found myself shouting at the screen. The only reasons I can see anyone giving it a high rating is the gratuitous nudity and excessive gore. Sadly although I enjoy gore in horror movies the death scenes lacked originality and creativity. If you are planning on buying or renting this movie I would recommend you resist the urge. This movie should have gotten the Hatchet on the drawing board.
To the people who rated this 5 + ... DON'T PROCREATE!!! PLEASE!!!
posted on 22 May 2009Oh, for the love of God! Not even a minute into this movie and i could tell it would be a piece of ... human excrement.I'm not even going to bother pointing out all the bad aspects of this movie 'cause i simply don't want to waste that much time with this; i'd rather go watch IF I DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER, I COULD HAVE SWORN THIS WAS AN UWE BOLL MOVIE!!First of all the script was awful!! Poor, dry and immature. All the gratuitous naked b**bs & buckets of blood you could ask for and more is in this ... The dialogue is as captivating and/or enlightening as a 5 year old on pot talking' to his dead gold fish. All the characters were dull and insipid (as if the poor acting wouldn't have been enough) and they lack any shred of connection with one another ... heck! i was sort of rooting for the freak to kill them already and get it over with!!I didn't even manage to watch this whole thing. 20 minutes in, i was so disgusted (NOT to be taken literally) with this movie that i started skipping through and finished it in another oh! 30 seconds.Enough is enough ...DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS!! Take the ticket money, go to a nude bar and tip a girl. It would be a much better investment!
Return of the Slashers
posted on 22 May 2009Before anyone compares this to other horror movies first remember that this is a slasher. This film doesn't fit in the category of movies like "The Grudge", "Dawn of the Dead", or "the Exorcist". "Hatchet is a slasher and should be treated like one, and seeing how slashers recently have looked, "Hatchet" is the new hope for this sub-genre.Slashers are all about extremely over the top blood and guts and a little humor thrown in there. Right away Adam Green set that tone and only slows done for a moment to set up the movie. After that the movie takes off on this fun adventure of blood curtailing screams and stereotyped characters. Anyone who has seen the old slashers such as "Friday the 13th" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" would know that thats what these movies have. "Hatchet" has the wise cracking guy, the dumb girls you just wish would die, and the two that you hope they make it. I don't want to put in any spoils so that people wanting to see this movie would read this and see another take of this movie.Bottom line don't go to this movie expecting scary ghost or zombies. Go expecting to have some fun, laugh, and cringe at the sight of over the top death scenes. I gave this movie a 10 because for what Adam Green set out to do, he did it in my opinion. But hey maybe you should go out and see it and form your own opinion on this movie. Keep an open mind and see it what it was meant to be and not what other movies look like.
Quite bloody. And dumb (of course). "Jason Does Mardi Gras".
posted on 22 May 2009"It's not a remake. It's not a sequel. And it's not a Japanese one either." That's what the poster says.True; it isn't a remake, nor is it a sequel, and it certainly isn't a Japanese-hit clone, yet what it is isn't that much better. "Hatchet" is first and foremost your typical idiotic horror crap, watchable, but an amalgamation of various remakes and sequels. Nice try, (marketing) guys...Still, among the plethora of cheap gags, a handful of them are actually amusing - mostly those involving the two porn bimbos arguing with each other. The violence is quite graphic, sometimes not comic-book-like enough to neatly fit in with the comedy. The ending is a cop-out. "How do we end this dumb, predictable story?" "Let's not end it at all!" Bodycount: 11.
great fun
posted on 14 May 2009i am very critical of horror flicks as so many in the genre disappoint nowadays and its very hard for low-budget versions to make an impact nowadays with expensive gory special effects being the main selling points. However, this movie delivers in many ways, there is great chemistry between most of the leads especially between ben(Joel Moore) and marcus(deon richmond), who despite being relative unknowns,do have good acting resumes. It doesn't take ages to introduce the characters as some horror movies feel they have to, to set the stage and when the story of "victor crowley" is told, the action never lets up. This is like a poor man's " the hills have eyes" in that there is only one disfigured freak but director/writer Adam Green makes sure characters are killed off in a different, ultra-violent way and while there is no explanation for the very existence or the ability of Crowley to survive, it doesn't detract from the entertainment on offer here. The best part of the movie was the ending which I won't give away, suffice to say it stuck two fingers up at the way 99% of Hollywood movies usually end!
Gory fun
posted on 12 May 2009While not a great film this movie was a pretty fun and gory ride.Maybe there isn't anything very original here but it does keep you interested all the way through.A group of people on a scare tour of a New Orleans swamp get stuck out in the swamp after their boat runs aground. One of the people on board is a local who tells them of the legend of a boy, last name of Crowley, borned deformed who was killed with a hatchet by his daddy.Soon after his death people started disappearing in the swamp and our group of tourists have landed smack dab in the middle of Ol'Crowley's territory. You can probably figure out the rest.OK so the DVD box at the rental store over-hyped this thing a mite, but it was still a decent horror flick.Like I said there is nothing terribly original here, the Crowley thing kinda looks like an uglier version of Jason and poor old Robert Englund makes yet another horror film cameo and it's a bunch of mostly 20 year olds running from a boogerman but still this film had some attitude. While not the coolest gore I've seen ,the gore is gruesome ,hacking and tearing and all sorts of blood. The director, Adam Green, has a thing about throwing gobs of blood on a tree when someone gets killed, not sure what that represented, and as he explains in one of the DVD extras he also has a fascination with Dee Snider of Twisted Sister fame and I'm really not sure why we would care enough for him to go into such detail.Even Dee is there gushing about meeting Adam, you two get a room.Anyway there were lots of blood and guts. One chick has most of her face taken off with a grinder and I wondered how you charge a grinder out in the middle of a swamp.Oh well, the little details....The "eye-popping" nudity the DVD box promised turned out to be a few quick shots of chicks flashing their mammaries at Mardi Gras trying to get some beads. There were a couple of big sets but they were too far away and too quickly shown to make me happy. Why can't we ever see really huge all natural bigguns in horror movies instead of those A cups? I'm not sure if this movie was pretty decent or I was just relieved not to have rented yet another totally sucky horror film,I've had a long streak of losers lately ,but either way it was an OK movie.I gave it a six, which may be a little high but, doggone it, I'm tired of handing out threes all the time. Not good enough to add to the collection but probably good enough to rent part two when it comes out.

Awesome!!!!
posted on 14 Aug 2009This is a great movie!!! Combining New Orleans with all the Voo Doo Stuff that most people say happens down there and mixing it with a truly scary plot and awesome special effects... It's cool the way Green combines bourbon street and all the famous bars and restaurants in the movie. It's rare for horror movies these days to scare the crap out of you while making you laugh out loud.I can't wait until this comes out in theaters, Anyone who reads this MUST try to see it at the Tribeca film festival. It's nice to see the classic horror actors in the genre that they started from.2 thumbs up!!! Adam Green is a sick and Very gifted individual
