Hilarious adventure with excellent performances
posted on 02 Apr 2009I caught "Her Alibi" last week by chance and I had absolutely no idea that it would be such an enjoyable movie. With Tom Selleck giving a simply wonderful performance and a gorgeous Paulina for company, the movie had me rooted to my seat for the entire length!Selleck plays the role of Phillip Blackwood , a not-so succesful writer with a creative block and his publisher is getting impatient with him, waiting for the next "Peter Swift" novel from blackwood. To get his creative juices flowing with ideas of crime plots,Selleck visits the law court one day where he witnesses the lovely Romanian girl,Nina(Paulina Polizkova), being tried for murder. In an attempt to salvage what's left of his personal life,Selleck gives her an alibi that she is his lover and saves her from imprisonment. The movie then deals with Selleck taking the girl home and incorporating totally twisted versions (of his daily adventures) into his novel. Now that his book seems to be shaping up with the elements of Mystery,Passion,Adventure and Thrill (characteristic of detective novels),Selleck finds himself falling in love and possibly also in danger with the ravishing beauty.!Her expert skills in throwing knives n handling scissors make it hard for him to believe that she could be innocent of the murder charge. However,Love soon finds itself taking form between the lonely, handsome man and the lovely lass. Her identity still remains a mystery to him and in his quest for the truth,he stumbles upon an interesting plot which makes the perfect ending for his new novel. The movie has its share of hilarious scenes when Selleck gets an arrow into his butt, when he rushes his family to the hospital(doubting that Nina might have poisoned them all)and when he challenges the bad guys to a bout(dressed up as a clown). It also captures the picturesque locations hitherto dreamt of only in fantasy lands.Paulina is an absolute stunner and she plays the part of the innocent yet no-nonsense kind of girl with ease and panache. In all,I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I sure hope all you guys watch it for yourselves sometime! If you like it,tell me so since I'd love to contact the stars and convey my appreciation.
People of Zee World ...
posted on 12 Jan 2009This movie does not explain The Meaning of Life nor does it try to. It is a diversionary entertainment, and a pretty good one at that! Along the way, it retro's our former preoccupation with the USSR and its Bloc countries. It's fun. Try it, you'll like it! As the Vivid Parrot in Tom Robbins' "Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates" counsels: "People of Zee World, Relax!"
The Most Underrated Movie Of All Time!
posted on 29 Sep 2008This is an absolutely spectacular film and is one of the top twenty movies of all time! Tom Selleck turns in a very good performance as a author suffering from writer's block, until he meets Nina, played spectacularly by the very, very, very, beautiful Paulina Porizkova.
She is suspected of murder and he offers her an alibi if she will stay with him at his huge residence with the hope that she will give him inspiration for his new book. The results are hilarious in this feel good comedy that is sure to please!
Enjoyable fluff
posted on 15 Jun 2007Okay, I can admit that this was a fairly dumb movie, but that didn't stop me from enjoying myself. Tom Selleck was a good choice for this silly film, and Paulina Porizkova shows that she's more than just a pretty face. Sometimes it did get too stupid for my tastes, but it was still a good way to kill an hour-and-a-half. Yeah, it's not Shakespeare, but it's a lot more fun than Shakespeare.
Her Alibi
posted on 26 May 2007Tom Seleck is a favorite actor of ours. Very few movies do we re watch but this is one. It is too funny and it's always the same. We've viewed it for fourteen years and we've just now purchased it for our own movie library. A good laugh has healing values, so instead of aspirin get this movie. You'll be happy you did.
Under-appreciated suspense comedy
posted on 09 Feb 2007Always likable Tom Selleck is well cast as a mediocre mystery writer (VERY mediocre, based on the samples of his writing we get in the voice-over narrations, which are one of the funniest parts of the movie). He's looking for a plot for his next book and finding it in the person of a beautiful Romanian college student (Paulina Porizkova) who seems to be hiding some big secret. The movie plays like the plot of a bad detective book, with perceptions of the female character shifting from dangerous to trustworthy to suspicious and back. The chemistry between the characters works very well romantically as both characters begin to fall in love despite being wary and suspicious of the various goings-on, and the Romanian KGB agents on Paulina's trail make for useful comic villains.
Fairly amusing "comedy-thriller" but sort of lame at the same time
posted on 25 Jan 2007Tom Selleck is the titular character, "her alibi," who provides a beautiful murder suspect with a false alibi because he believes she is innocent. However, once he brings her back to his house, he begins to believe perhaps he was wrong - and now she is trying to murder him so that he cannot go back on his word.Selleck's character also happens to be a mystery writer of cheap paperback books so he uses what's happening in his life as a parallel to his story, so at moments throughout the film we hear voice-overs of the story being narrated and it's played for comedy (example: Selleck makes a lot of noise while spying on the murder suspect, then in voice-over he reads a line from the book he's writing and says that the character in the book "quietly snuck up on the girl.").Not a great movie, but it will entertain you.
there should be more movies like this
posted on 11 Jul 2006Though not a masterpiece of film-making, HER ALIBI makes for a pleasant change from the violent films that Hollywood keeps on churning out. Tom Selleck and model-cum-actress Paulina Porizkova generate some genuine sparks on-screen in this lighthearted comedy/mystery. Selleck does well in the role of a once-popular mystery writer, while Porizkova, better known for her model-perfect looks, satisfies as the mysterious foreigner who captures the heart of Selleck.
Good clean fun
posted on 01 May 2006Tom Selleck, writer of mysteries, is enchanted by a beautiful foreigner, Paulina Porizkova. Searching for a new spin for his fictional character, this writer finds a plot brewing in the eyes of the alluring murder suspect. In the process he falls in love but at the same time is unsure of her innocence. Will he be the next victim? Their interplay is charming but not sophisticated. This is a simple, fun movie with loads of laughs.
Selleck finds inspiration in Porizkova
posted on 09 Apr 2006Tom Selleck stars as a detective novelist with writers block in this cute little movie that introduces supermodel Paulina Porizkova to the acting world. She does a fine job as a Russian immigrant accused of murder (of course she didn't do it) and Selleck offers to be her alibi. On a scale of one to ten..6
Typical Selleck
posted on 18 Feb 2006Tom Selleck plays a mystery novelist with writer's block who "discovers" his next story in Nina (Paulina Porizkova), a woman so beautiful that she could not possibly commit the murder she is accused of. Selleck offers her an alibi and spends the rest of the movie worrying about whether she really did commit murder and if he is her next victim.
The story line is weak and has an overly pollyanna ending. But the casting is exceptional and the weak plot is lost in the delightful interaction between the characters. Selleck is as always very good, but Ms Porizkova is surprisingly believable as the almost childlike mysterious woman. The supporting cast bathes the story in a consistent dry humor that makes the outrageous antics of Selleck's character more hilarious by comparison.
While the film is often too cutsy and you have to be in the mood for slapstick to enjoy much of the humor, it is a gentle bit of fluff, perfect for a lighthearted evening with your sweetheart.
Her Alibi a modern classic
posted on 20 Jul 2005This must be the most under-rated comedy around. Tom Selleck is at his best playing a cowardly novelist who lives out his fantasies through his creation the famous detective Peter Swift. Paulina Porizkova is disarmingly good as the alleged murderess he provides an alibi for. He spends most of the movie terrified of her, wondering if she really is a psycho on the one hand and falling in love with her on the other. There are some great set pieces here, but the best comedy flows from the book he is writing about their situation. The most mundane events become incredible overblown adventures, its kind of hard to explain but trust us its hilarious.
I coulda been watching the IFC channel
posted on 10 Jul 2005Occasionally amusing but for the most part I just sat there and watched these folks go through their paces. This was merely one of those pictures created to fill up a film reel and make a nice payday for a big name actor. A pointless exercise in tedium.

I LOVE HER AND I FEAR HER
posted on 26 Jul 2009Her Alibi will never be a listed as one of the top 100 movies of the century. It will never be considered a piece of art that will change your life forever. However, it is a great choice for a delightful way to spend a lazy afternoon or quite weekend evening with your significant other.
First of all, this movie is very funny. Tom Selleck is a bit out of his typecast as a bumbling writer. He narrates the novel that he is writing while the film shows the experiences that inspired the writing. The contrast between reality and fantasy is hilarious.
Second, the interplay between characters is touching and witty. One never knows what is and is not true as the story unfolds. Yet, some scenes are both touching and insightful. Along those lines, the scene where Tom Selleck gets a haircut is more erotic than many more graphic scenes from movies made for today's more coarse society.
Finally, this reviewer finds this movie interesting, at least to this viewer, as a case study in technology use. This movie was made in 1989 a bit before cell phones, pda's, and desk top computers become ubiquitous. It is interesting to see how many of these tools have become so imbedded in our lives that to view folks working and living without them is almost like a trip to some ancient culture.
Overall, this movie is a nice and entertaining way to spend a few leisure hours. Likewise, it is a good story that will hold up under repeated viewings.
