somewhat dated but very funny movie

posted on 22 Jun 2009

Charlie Sheen is cool, Valerie Golina is beautiful, Llyod Bridges is funny. The scene where Sheen stands atop his Harley dancing as Bobby Darin's dream lover plays over the soundtrack is absolutly classic. Probably one of the ten funniest of the 1990's.

Is This Supposed To Be A Comedy??? Please Advise

In this movie we see Charlie Sheen whose real life antics used to be a lot funnier than this movie. In this piece of junk he plays Topper Harley who has to excorcise some demons from his past. Maybe he should have just taken them for a walk!!! This movie tries to be clever and funny and fails miserably on all counts. It didn't even raise a chuckle from me after a six pack of Miler beer when I found most things to be pretty funny. And just for the record I thought that the movies "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun" were junk too. I give this movie 5 stars because I at least got a buzz out of my six pack of beer.

Good, But Not As Enjoyable As Part Deux

This "Top Gun" spoof gets mixed emotions for me. Charlie Sheen, Cary Elwes and Lloyd Bridges are definitely the high points of the film, they are hilarious! So is this film, but towards the end during the last battle scene it gets dull. This is supposed to be a comedy, but they leave that for an almost serious battle sequence with just little gags thrown in every now and then. When you are laughing hard most of the time, you notice when the film drags. My personal favorite part is the wall eye vision. Overall, I really did enjoy this movie; it just started to drag a little towards the end, but picks up again right at the end

I don't know if this is meant to be a spoof of a film, probably Top Gun or something, or just a bunch of action films involving Harriers and troops. But anyway it has some classic Naked Gun or Airplane like moments where the characters get themselves into stupid moments and act like complete idiots. Charlie Sheen as Lt. Topper Harley is the best of all the characters, and one of the most amusing scenes where he cooks food on a woman's "hot" stomach. Cary Elwes as Lt. Kent Gregory is annoying, just like Twister and Liar Liar. And Kevin Dunn as Lt. Cmdr. James Block I can remember for giving some pretty good punchlines. Worth watching!

Decently funny parody

posted on 15 Dec 2008

'Hot Shots!' is one of those movies that make fun of other movies or in this movie's case, just one, 'Top Gun'. Parodies are always welcomed by the masses, they are watchable to viewers of any age, but in the end they are just for laughs and nothing more. 'Hot Shots!' has those same characteristics of any parodies that came before and after it, although for me this movie was a bit more...And maybe that's because i never really liked 'Top Gun' in the first place, and all these jokes that are made in 'Hot Shots!', and that revolve around not only the main events in 'Top Gun', but almost EVERY event, are very funny and likable, they will maybe make you realize: "Oh my god, this is so right, all flaws and unrealistic things that were made in 'Top Gun' are shown here in a hilarious way of making fun of 'Top Gun'". That's the main thing i like about this movie, these jokes aren't so funny if you didn't watch the 'Top Gun', but if you did, and you don't consider it to be one of your favorite movies, then you will think that 'Hot Shots!' is quite funny and entertaining. Charlie Sheen sets a whole new meaning to an expression "cocky slick", he makes most of the jokes and provides the biggest laughs to the audience. Except for 'Top Gun' stuff, this movie also contains minor parodies on other movies (e.g. 'Rocky'). 'Hot Shots!' is one of those movies with which you just can't miss. You will be satisfied on most of the levels after seeing it and you surely won't think of it as a garbage, in fact it is more likely you think of it as one of the best parodies and rate it even higher than i did.

"TOP GUN"'s "AIRPLANE!"

HOT SHOTS! (1991) *** Charlie Sheen, Cary Elwes, Valeria Golino, Lloyd Bridges, Kevin Dunn, Jon Cryer, Kristy Swanson, Efrem Zimablist, Jr. The "Airplane!" treatment of "Top Gun" with Sheen perfectly dead-pan as a maverick fighter pilot and his motley crew of oddballs. Sightgags aplenty and Bridges is a riot as the leader's surgically enhanced doofus.

Very good comedy to pass the time!

I bought this in Tesco for a tiny sum of £4.00 because i heard that it was really good, it has an 81% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was a box office success, grossing over $180,000,000.There you are kids, a bit of history, tell your friends! It took me a while (about 15 minutes) to get into the films humour, the jokes at the start produce giggles, some were just unfunny but as the film progressed the jokes got funnier and i was starting to see the good film that the critics were talking about!I'd love to spoil some of the funniest lines but, i'm not gonna, there are some real corkers in this film. What scores this film more points is that it was short, only 80 minutes or so, so it doesn't drag on and get old.Maybe i'm only giving this film a 7 because i missed some of the sight gags or something, i don't know. I'll still be buying "Part Deux" if i see it in the shops though, it's probably worth it.So the bottom line is "Don't Shop For It, Argos it!" no wait that's not right.....hold on, i'll get it......AH! The Bottom line is:This film is funny, some good one-liners, sure, i wasn't laughing till there were tears in my eyes (i've only did THAT in a couple of films) but i was still chuckling along with the film, it's not a classic but it's still very good and the jokes will stay in my head for a while, as a famous person said about another film "It's impossible not to laugh!"7/10

Great fun

A hilarious movie, made moreso by the fact that the acting and plot are universally better than what you'd find in the object of it's spoofing, "Top Gun." The film is loaded with Abrahams's usual sight-gags, puns, slapstick, and quick wordplay. There's always something going on in the background, making for fun repeat viewings. The overall cheesiness of the special effects really adds to the overall experience. Besides that, it's educational, too! You'll never again wonder what a chafing dish is.

Hot Shots classic movie DVD

posted on 19 Jul 2008

This classic comedy is so much fun it should be illegal as a controlled substance. Dropping a bomb on Saddam Hussein's crotch?!? Now THAT is downright hostile but also laugh-out-loud funny. Sheen's comic timing is great, and so is that of dotty old Lloyd Bridges. Both the DVD and the seller rate A+A+A+A+.

Includes one of the best scenes in comedy

HOT SHOTS! (1991) contain spoilers((( Jim Abrahams, David and Jerry Zucker, three guys that knows how to make a good comedy, and course parody in other words. Charlie Sheen plays the main character Topper Harley, and we can see Lloyd Bridges as a stupid man, as always and Cary Elwes. The movie makes a fool out of the 80ties classic "Top Gun" all the way and has dozens of hilarious scenes. My big favourite is when Topper comes driving on his bike and sees his coming love riding on a horse, this excellent song rolls and Topper starts doing the same things as the woman on the horse, this is comedy history! The movie is filled with small, funny scenes and that makes it funny all the way. It's much better then the sequel, though that one is also very nice. Hot Shots! features things that's fantastic, small stuff, as when a pilot lands his fighter he has been on the store, or when a female pilot comes too Topper and says something like: "You're a real man" - he anwers her: "So are you!"Or when Topper makes egg and bacon on the stomach of his love, its funny, and I really recommend it. STARS: **** 4/5

My number 125 movie

posted on 19 Apr 2008

Hot Shots, part 1 is my number 125 movie. It has great humor and it is very funny. I think part 2 was about twice as funny. Of course, it has not a good story and not good actors, but it just wants to entertain and it did. Mainly it is a parody on „Top Gun". I consider this movie as one of the Top50 comedy movies.
It could have been better, but it is good. The more you watch it, the more you will see any details that you have not seen before. So you watch this film over and over again. All in all, I rated this movie 9/10 and recommend it to comedy fans, especially to fans of The Naked Gun and Hot Shots 2. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them.Cu; Rinho

Maybe it's just because I haven't seen Top Gun, but when I first saw this film I was absolutely clueless. Yeah, there were some funny parts and humor from the makers of Airplane, Naked Gun, and Mafia, but the plot fell a little short. Charlie Sheen plays Topper Harley and follows his fathers footsteps when he flies in the Navy. There's also other great appearances by Cary Elwes and Lloyd Bridges (getting a little older), and silly characters like Washout and Dead Meat. I suggest you see Top Gun first, maybe then you will get more of the jokes. I give credit to Jim Abrahams and Pat Proft, though, because Top Gun seems like a tough movie to spoof.

Did I mention pratfalls?

posted on 02 Feb 2008

You don't need a lot of brainpower to absorb this movie. It goes for the cheapest laughs it can find. To name three: pratfalls, pratfalls and more pratfalls. Sometimes it works -- especially when Lloyd Bridges is on the screen -- and sometimes the jokes fall flat. You're bound to get a few chuckles, and at only 90 minutes, it's doesn't require a big time commitment. Some of the jokes are so quick, you might have to watch it over to get them.

Very high hit to miss ratio makes it almost stand out with Airplane and Naked Gun as one of the funniest spoofs around

posted on 29 Jan 2008

Haunted by feelings of guilt over the actions of his father Buzz and having been kicked out of the navy, Topper Harley has withdrawn from the navy to a life of solitude, quiet contemplation and helium. However when Lt Commander Block comes to him with an offer of a second chance, to take part in secret mission Sleepy Weasel, Topper takes it up and signs up for training and briefing with the other pilots. However with a difficult love interest and his old fears resurfacing, can Topper hold it together? Can the mission succeed? Can Admiral Benson get it together? Only time, will tell. The spoof genre is one that appears easy to do but things like Scary Movie, Spaceballs and others all show that it is not as easy as it appears – it is not enough to simply ape films unless it is done cleverly and funnily as well. Hot Shots succeeds in this area by managing to make such fun out of serious films that it is hard not to laugh – in fact I watched Top Gun recently and found it impossible not to laugh as I remembered Hot Shots! Of course it is not just the fact that it spoofs movies but also that the dialogue is really, really funny – totally off the wall and takes you by surprise at times. A fine example of this is the dialogue given to Admiral Benson such as 'they ran out of material before they got to the knee so don't give me any sh*t'! This continues throughout the film and it rarely misses. Just like Top Gun the romance aspect isn't as funny as the other bits but even then it is still good. Some individual lines aren't as sharp as others but generally the film has enough great dialogue and funny movie spoofs (including quite a few Tom Cruise movies) to be consistently funny even after repeat viewings. The cast is often important in this type of thing and those who have suffered the Wayans brothers mugging in their 'spoofs' will know exactly what I mean – people like Leslie Nielsen make it look easy but it really isn't. And that is why the cast here should be largely praised for their straight delivery that serves to make the material even better. Although not the star of the film, every scene he is in is stolen by Lloyd Bridges – so great in Airplane, he gets the best lines here and his character is hilarious. He is supported well by Sheen who proves really able in sending himself up and he has done well in other spoofs since then. The rest of the cast is made up of very familiar faces who all seem in tune with the material provided – Elwes is fun; Cryer and O'Leary embrace their one-note characters. Golino is a bit dry in her delivery and doesn't help her already weak part in the film. Minor roles for Swanson, Stiles, Dunn and others are also good value for differing reasons and there are a few good cameos in there as well.Overall, as with all these things you need to be in the mood but the strength of the material and the high hit ratio makes it easy to enjoy this film. Much more fun that Top Gun and consistently funny with regular laugh-out-loud moments this is a great spoof that is only just short of the greats like Airplane and Naked Gun.

I'm a virgin. I'm just not very good at it.

Obviosly this was a spoof of Top Gun. I don't know why anyone needs to spoof Tom Cruise, as I feel he does pretty good job of spoofing himself with his jumping on the couch. Beside that, South Park spoof him better than anyone I've seen.Mel Brooks is the best at spoofs. They should t6ake some lessons from him. There were a few laughs here, but most of the gags were pretty stupid.I like Charlie Sheen, so I hung in there, but I will not be back.I have to say, Valeria Golino, where have you been all my life? Italian and Greek, just like Michael's wife in The Godfather. I see she is doing something with Harvey Keitel next year. I can hardly wait. I see also that she was in a take-off of James Nond. I'll have to check that out. I'll also have to look for Frida and Escape from L.A.

Hot shots is not worth watching. Some parts are funny but most parts are made by a 8 year old infant; the part with Superman and the ambulance f.e. makes you think you're watching a kids-movie.

Hilarious!!!

This is one of the funniest films I've seen since....forever. Laughs are weaved into almost every second of the film so you are guaranteed a good time. A silly romantic comedy drawn to my attention with the knowledge of such a terrific cast. From Charlie Sheen to Ryan Stiles, this is a must-see and a must-have! If you like this one, be sure to check out Hot Shots part deux, which is equal in both laughs and love.

Even better the 10th time

posted on 13 Oct 2007

If you like spoof movies, then this is the movie for you. I just got done watching it for the 10th time and still found myself rolling off the couch. This is how spoofs should be done, not so over the top that it loses it grounding (Wrongfully Accused) or throw jokes blatantly in your face a mile a minute hoping some of them will work (Baseketball).
