One of the best comedies I have ever seen
posted on 20 Aug 2009This is a really entertaining comedy with Rowan Athkinson as a Mr. Bean/James Bond type character by the name of Johnny English. As the last 00 in England it is up to him to save the country from a coup by an evil Frenchman who seeks to become the new King of England. Johnny English manages to make an excellent fool of himself in various more or less (mostly more) embarrassing ways and still manages to become the hero who saves beloved England in the end.If you enjoy James Bond and Mr. Bean, try to imagine Mr. Bean as James Bond and you will have a good idea of where this film is going. I heartily recommend this comedy and it is one of few films I have watched several times.
Quite Implausible
posted on 16 Aug 2009Johnny seems a pleasant enough fellow involved with a totally implausible plot/premise. It's all "bean" done by Peter Sellers and much better. See on of the Pink Panther movies or even The Tuxedo for more laughs. The best line "Johnny English, Secret Service" was played over and over and over again on TV commercials. Nothing else remarkable.
I expected bad, and I got it
posted on 12 Aug 2009I can't say I am disappointed by this movie. I expected it to be bad. The first Bean movie was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It was a disappointing crossover from TV to movie. His Bean shorts are pure genius. His shorts were aired on TV in England and rebroadcast on PBS and Showtime about 7-8 years ago. I loved the shorts so much, I bought the complete DVD set just released. He seemed like a modern day silent screen star. His body movement and language was funny even with the sound off. Bean never said anything; he just acted with his body. His movies are not even in the same league as the Bean TV shows. The first thing wrong is that he talks. Vocally he is not funny. Maybe if he tried to replicate his silent acting style of the Bean shorts it would be original and funny. This movie is not a Mr. Bean character move. I did not expect the Bean character, but I did expect better. In this movie he plays a super agent in England, because all the other agents have been killed. I don't remember laughing or being very interested at any point during this movie. This will definitely qualify for one of the unfunniest comedies of the year. 4\10
Not bad but could of been better
posted on 04 Aug 2009I usually enjoy Atkinson's work so I was looking forward to watching this despite remembering some bad reviews it received when it was released. I found it a quite entertaining comedy without being hilarious.Atkinson plays Johnny English, a bumbling spy who with the help of his trusty sidekick Bough (a nice performance by Ben Miller) sets out to foil Pauscal Sauvage's (John Malkovich with a ridiculous French accent)evil plans. What almost sinks the film is the lack of chemistry between Rowan Atkinson and his leading lady Natalie Imbruglia (who can't act for peanuts). Despite this there are enough humorous bits for the undemanding viewer to get some enjoyment. 6/10.
A good laugh
posted on 29 Jul 2009The ludicrous plot is as follows: French businessman Pascal Sauvage plots to steal the Crown Jewels so that he can become King of England. When secret agent Number One is killed during his latest mission, Johnny English played by Rowan Atkinson becomes his successor as a result of a bomb wiping out all other feasible contenders. English's mission is to stop Sauvage and his evil plan becoming a reality.
Needless to say, this is a very silly movie but it does have some genuinely funny set-pieces -I was relieved to find that these were not just restricted to the ones that I'd seen in the trailer. In many ways Johnny English is as inept and clumsy as the Mr Bean character but sidekick Bough (Ben Miller) is nearby to clean up the messes that English finds himself in. Much of the comedic value is derived from the fact that this assistance is never acknowledged by English. John Malkovich plays the bad guy and hams it up with an over-the-top French accent while Natalie Imbruglia is an effective and pretty English' girl. This is definitely not the film for you if you are after something intellectual as the comedy is simple and unsophisticated. However, if you like Rowan Atkinson or if you are a fan of the Mr Bean character, you will have a good laugh.
Worst English Production ever!!
posted on 27 Jul 2009I love every other work that Rowan Atkinson has done, but I was sad tosee this as I now question his brilliance. He's not 'Mr Bean" in thismovie and yet he's even more the bumbling idiot! Just a very weakscript, humor etc. Horrible. Also the most predictable scenes. I can'tbelieve money was put into this project at all. And as for the 'stiff'Australian Actress - I can see why no English actresses would take therole. Don't waste your time.I know it was supposed to be funny and silly, but it's borderingon baby humour. It's left a bad taste in my mouth and I regret ever watching it.
I loved this movie, and I LOVE Rowan Atkinson!:)
posted on 11 Jul 2009Johnny English is a great comedy and it has my favorite actor and comedian, Rowan Atkinson. It makes you laugh till your guts hurt. Also, you get a surprise at the end when the clumsy come out on top. You see Johnny fail at every way possible to an extent where he is thrown off his big case. Then by sudden luck, the woman he sort of has a crush on is put on the case and forces him to help because she can look past the bumbling idiot that everybody else see's. Then after being captured, he escapes, and purely by accident, saves the country he loves. Then there is a twist ending that truly takes you by surprise. If you are a fan of comedy or of Britain, or even if you just don't have anything to do this weekend, I hope you'll watch this great movie.
Hilarious spy spoof for the whole family!
posted on 27 Jun 2009Johnny English is one of the funniest movies, and spy spoofs, ever. Starring Rowan Atkinson, Natalie Imbruglia, and John Malkovich. Directed by Peter Howitt. It is about a clumsy spy named Johnny English, who is only chosen for MI7 because all the other spies died. English soon has to save the crown jewels of England, and him and his partner Bough are the only ones who know the real suspect is seemingly-innocent, multi-billionaire Pascal Sauvage (John Malkovich) whose family was supposed to own England 200 years ago. Johnny teams up with a lady spy to save the crown, because Sauvage wants to turn all of England into a prison. Hilarious Rowan Atkinson film with unforgettable gags!Grade: 8/10MPAA Rating: PGMy Rating: Ages 7 and up (violence, language, crude humor, some nudity, a suggestive reference)
pretty substandard stuff from Rowan Atkinson
posted on 25 Jun 2009There is very little to enjoy in this wannabe spy spoof 'Johnny English'. With barely a couple of laughs, the material simply isn't there to sustain a feature length film. Rowan Atkinson tries hard, but the screen play badly lets him down. There's just one funny scene, involving a dentist's anesthetic (naturally lifted from the old TV series 'Mr Bean'). The normally reliable John Malkovich is horrible. His cheesy French accent won't make anyone laugh. There may be some sporadic humor for kids, but adults should simply FF their way through the DVD.Overall 3/10
Horrible- Rowan should be ashamed.
posted on 23 Jun 2009I just watched this so called comedy film, and I was very very disappointed. The movie is terrible- it has the most idiotic plot, and Rowan just doesnt work trying to be Peter Sellers or Mike Myers. Furthermore, there are so few jokes, and the few jokes there are, are so predictable and lame it is disgusting. I really can't find a single redeeming, or even funny moment in the film( other than Rowan singing in the Shower- and he puts this singing on DVD?). I suppose being an American I have different taste than a European. We are all told that British Humor is an acquired taste- well I must not have acquired it- and this movie sure doesnt help any. It is as stale and tasteless as English food. Ugh. From the previous comments on the board, I am quite shocked that people enjoyed this sorry excuse for a film.
They spend the whole movie floundering
posted on 15 Jun 2009Man... I love Mr Bean, but this is NOT even close to Mr Bean. It really did suck... I guess the writers couldnt decide whether he was dumb or smart... It flopped back and forth, and the very few good jokes couldnt stop the movie from falling over on its side and dying
rubbish movie, Almost no fun at all
posted on 07 Jun 2009This was a real rubbish movie, with almost no fun at all!! I'd seen Bean The Movie a long while ago and thought after the trailer that is was going to be really funny, but I really disliked the movie. Now I saw the trailer of Johnny English when I was in England last January and I thought this will be a funny movie at last for rowan Atkinson. But it was the same as Bean. All really funny things are in the trailer and only one more funny joke in the movie. It would have been better to put that joke in the trailer too, so you only need to see the trailer. And the story is to sad to talk about. This movie really doesn't deserve any higher then a 1 (and I almost never give one) But I think if you liked the Bean Movie you like this one too. So maybe their is still change for you!! I forget to tell you that I loved the television serie with Bean, so it's not that I don't like Mr. Bean,
Children's film
posted on 07 Jun 2009I saw this film with 6 other people and 5 of us wished we hadn't come. I thought it was predictable and that the script lacked humour. I think the actors did the best they could but I would not recommend going to this film unless you are taking young children. Do think twice about the latter though because I was a victim of a 'poo' nightmare that very night. 4/10 - sorry.
There seems to be a spate of secret agent spoofs doing the movie circuit at the moment.
posted on 01 Jun 2009Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson starred in the American spoof, I Spy, which was screened in Te Awamutu in February. Now it's the turn of rubbery-faced English comedian Rowan Atkinson to take on the role of bumbling secret agent Johnny English in this far superior spoof of the Bond movies, directed by Peter Howitt. The film sees the bumbling Johnny English promoted to the role of secret agent after his lack of security training inadvertently causes the deaths of Britain's other secret agents. After Britain's crown jewels are stolen by the lunatic Frenchman Pascal Sauvage, played with a comical French accent by American actor John Malkovich, English stumbles upon a plot where the Frenchman will turn the UK into a gigantic prison colony after being crowned king. Only English, his subordinate Bough (Ben Miller) and the mysterious Lorna Campbell (Natalie Imbruglia) can stand in his way. Atkinson's antics as Blackadder and Mr Bean are now world famous and many of the situations English lands himself in would seem at home in either serial. While the film is far cleaner than any Blackadder episode it's far funnier than any Mr Bean instalment. There's a particularly Blackadderesque scene when English battles a non-existent assailant in the Tower of London. While Atkinson really plays himself, the true comic moments come through his interaction with the straight-laced Bough, who delivers every line with deadpan seriousness. Australian-born Imbruglia, of course, provides a love interest for English in her big screen debut, but whose side is she on? Johnny English is bound to do little for Anglo-Franco relations, with a radio announcer suggesting the Brits ring in with the ten things they like most about the French during the lead up to Sauvage's coronation. `So far we've had no calls,' he says. Johnny English (PG) is a rollicking good laugh for all, but will be most appreciated by the English viewer who will see it in its real context. The film is now showing at The Regent Theatre, Te Awamutu, and is a must for any Blackadder or Mr Bean fan. Don't forget to sit through the credits for a final laugh.
Double-O-Not-Funny
posted on 26 May 2009Johnny English is a pretty lifeless attempt at comedy. English is a blatant copy of the Naked Gun, and Pink Panther films. With the unfortunate exception that it's not funny. The film is relatively short, but the pace is very slow. Any attempts at a joke are signaled in advance, which makes it all rather pointless. The humour is pretty low as well (think getting hit on the head, bare bottoms, and poo). I half-chuckled three times or so - that's it.It's a mystery they didn't work more on the script, as the action scenes look fairly expensive. It should have been better, but as it is now they really must have been scraping the bottom of the barrel. [1/10]
Lots of Laughs
posted on 12 May 2009Johnny English combines the wit, savoir faire, competence, and sheer cold menace of Mr. Bean with the bonhomie, boyish charm, generosity, and humility of five generations of Blackadders. In other words, he thinks he's the bee's knees, but he's actually an incompetent boob. (Or, in Atkinson's words, "a wibbly little man.") This role isn't much of a departure for Atkinson, but the flick is lots of fun, and I'm surprised it hasn't made more of a splash in a summer which didn't really have much else to offer.
A has-Bean?
posted on 02 May 2009Johnny English reminds me a lot of Return of the Jedi. When I saw thatparticular film, I had taken a little too much LSD and when Yoda's immortaldeath scene transpired, I was reduced to shrieking, convulsions, terminatingwith my forced expulsion from the cinema. To this day, I still have not seen the
end of Lucas' weakest offering prior to Episode I or Episode II.Johnny English was so terrible that midway through the screening (attended by
8 interpid souls), I began a fit of laughter. I had suddenly realized howincredibly chronic the film was, how incredibly dire, how unspeakably awful it all
was. Once I started laughing and choking, the other patrons became infected,
until people were uniformly crying and screaming. My girlfriend left my side and
moved several rows away. My fits of hysterics did not end for over 15 minutes.By all accounts, I have seen many films worse than Johnny English. Summer2003's rancid Hulk and Legally Blonde 2 were by all rights much worse films, but there was something about Johnny English that tipped the balance. Perhaps its was the mighty fall of Edmund Blackadder, of Mr Bean... RowanAtkinson is better than this. Of course Reese Witherspoon is shriekingly bad, a
terrible, terrible actress, but Rowan's not all that bad.Anyhow, don't see this film. It's not bad enough to be great, and not goodenough to be anything other than terrible.2/10
Not the best but still good
posted on 24 Apr 2009I only like the show "Mr.Bean" if only his teddy is in the episode.I'm not really a fan of Rowan Atkinson but I have to say that he put on an excellent performance and Played the leading role as a secret agent called Johnny English.John Malkovich was brilliant as the French villain who tries to become king of England and turn it into the worlds largest prison.Johnny English is about an agent who becomes agent1 after all the other agents got killed in an explosion, but it really turns out that Johnny English is an idiot and makes too much mistakes which get him fired and because he won't leave a suspect alone.Johnny then just sits in his apartment wasting his life until he is offered a second chance by a woman who took his place. Can English stop the villain from his daring plan from taking over England.Watch and find out. This movie just shows yet again Rowan Atkinson acting the idiot in yet another movie but at least he speaks proper English. This movie has a good plot and runs at a good pace and the acting was brilliant.I have liked this movie but some of the jokes weren't funny at all and Rowan Atkinson plays an idiot throughout and made me give it a 7/10.I hope it doesn't have a prequel or sequel because this movie will be 100 percent ruined.

LOL
posted on 22 Aug 2009Oh dear. A funny movie. Actually, a very funny movie. And although some of the jokes were extremely predictable, they were still funny. And the exaggerations that abound in the film are funny too.Rowan Atkinson plays a very convincing know-it-all secret agent type (who is actually an enormous loser). Malkovich plays a reasonably stuck-up Frenchman, although his accent sometimes sounds more like a German.Natalie plays a good support role as the female secret agent type.Ben Miller plays a smart (but gullible) assistant to Rowan, and plays his role very well.Overall a great movie to watch and fun as well!
