Manipulative and Simplistic

posted on 30 Aug 2009

Look, I do get it. I fully appreciate that a film about a girl who gets pregnant, has an early abortion, then manages to move on, would be a pretty short movie. In fact, so short it wouldn't get made. No one wants to know about reality. And certainly in 21st century North America, no one wants to portray abortion as a viable option. Very, very bad form currently. But when I see this film reviewed as "blazingly truthful" and the pregnant 16 year old central character described as being 'in a pickle', as I did in one review, as if perhaps she'd forgotten a homework assignment and might get detention, I have to admit that the cynic who lurks in my soul gets full rein. This is basically a cutesy film about being pregnant at 16, where despite a few problems, everyone gets to live pretty much happily ever after. Gosh, girl in a pickle comes good! Ahhh!! And apparently everyone in the cinema where I saw it was quite overwhelmed by attacks of the warm fuzzies, except me. Two seats away, a woman slightly older than me was weeping joyfully by the end while behind me, young women were giggling happily as sweet Juno's bump grew. Good grief! Is this really a message we want to give to 16 year olds? I'm beginning to think I'm something of an oddity. You see, I don't find it 'blazingly truthful' that a bright, resourceful and articulate 16 year old as Juno is portrayed, would be so dumb as to have inadequately protected sex then seem surprised to find herself up the spout. One point of the script is that Juno herself apparently initiated the sex, thought it through in advance in fact, because she was bored. I therefore assume the pregnancy was at least to some extent planned. And if she really had no idea that sex might lead to pregnancy, her parents (portrayed as bemused but supportive), should be excoriated for such inadequate parenting. And if I see one more review which describes Juno as a comedy about growing up 'and the bumps along the way….' (I'm prepared to bet good money on that having been written by a middle aged man), I swear I'm going to run amok in the local mall with a urine dip stick. Being pregnant at 16 isn't a sweet joke, abortion clinics (whatever you think of their morality - and I'm neutral on that) are not run by morons, and while Juno has some amusing one-liners, and a good central performance from Ellen Page, it is basically a deeply flawed, superficial movie which is trying too hard to be cute. It's extremely manipulative.I'm going to be very controversial and suggest that far from being surprised by an unplanned pregnancy, Juno might actually be a very willful young woman who wants to add pregnancy/childbirth/adoption to her 'experiments-in-living' list. At everyone else's expense. It certainly makes her the center of attention. She wouldn't be the first girl to get pregnant for that reason.I found the situation between the adoptive parents more convincing. Childless Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) is desperate for a baby. Husband Mark is not so sure, and does at least eventually face up to the truth of his uncertainty by making a break for it. He may be 40 going on 18, but he's being honest about it. And for me the most moving scene in the whole film was when Vanessa held the newborn child in her arms for the first time, having decided to go it alone as a mother anyway. If there is a message to be taken from this movie, it's possibly that becoming a mother when the time is right, is just fine. A superficial, cutesy, lightweight movie. The fact it was written by a woman is no excuse. I am gobsmacked that it's been nominated.

My adoration for the film.

Junoverse ID# is 2755This movie was completely amazing. I have been waiting for MONTHS for it and when I finally got a chance to see it, it blew my mind. Not only is this cast amazing but the chemistry was phenomenal!! Michael Cera and Ellen Page are complete magic and definitely a force to be reckoned with. I've been a fan of almost everyone in this film for years. Wow, I just can't even believe how much I love this film. The wit was splendid with some tremendously touching moments. I will definitely being seeing this again and owning it when it's released on DVD. I recommend this film to absolutely everyone.Go see it. It may very well change you a little. :]

Juno I read many good reviews on IMDb about this movie, and it while I write this review it is currently rated at no. 148 – best movie list. The story is about a 16 year old girl Juno (played by 20 year old Ellen Page) who finds that she is pregnant by a simpler and ordinary guy, Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). She decides for abortion – but finding that the baby in the womb might have grown nails – decides to mother the baby. She concludes that she will find a suitable rich, good and lovely couple to rear her child – she finds one in Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) and Mark (Jason Bateman). Juno delivers the baby – but in doing so, gets in touch with some basic truths of life and love. This movie is a big hit among young girls. The theatre I sat in to see this movie, 80 percent of the audience was below 18 years girls. (I was surely surprised and shy) The movie has also won the Oscars for best original screenplay writing – the award goes to Diablo Cody. A lot of the credit for what the movie has turned out to be should go to three persons – one Diablo Cody, second the director Jason Reitman (Thank you for smoking) and third the actress Ellen Page (who is acting since she is 10 years old).Diablo Cody – a media graduate, turned secretary, stripper, blog / storywriter turned screenwriter is an inspirational life to read. She creates this character Juno – smart and over confidence beyond her age, and delivers dialogues that are not heard routinely. There are so many sequences in the movie that are so unreal but is not the fictional movie industry a fantasy? Jason Reitman – sticks to the simplier task of pure screenplay adaptation. Ellen Page – portrays a difficult character, that is difficult to perceive – let alone play it. A 16 year old girl talking the language of a lady who is older than 26-27 years of age.I think, the trigger of connect with this movie could be a whipped up psyche of gender equality hungry audiences who gets a straw to hang on with this bold persona.Apart from that, the best part of the movie is the musical score by Matt Messina – it so touchy. The relationship between the couple Vanessa and Mark (looking to adopt a baby) is so deceptively written – always ahead of what the audiences think – that it is really entertaining and intelligent. The last 20 minutes of the movie are the most engrossing and best. The vivid superficiality until that point converts to a deeply touching wind-up.I have never come across such careless, dis-respectful and arrogant character and it surely is difficult to accept. The sad part of gender equality - especially relating to women - is that the trend of futuristic women are shown having all the bad behavior, bad characteristic, bad thoughts and bad actions of men - ie abusive, aggressive, over-confident etc. Now a days people think that this is good and intelligent thing, but I am not sure!? An AMAZING movie

When me and my friends first saw the commercial for this movie, we were just like ha, another movie with a teenager pregnant. It's probably going to be lame. WRONG! I ended up going by myself to see it, and the first couple of minutes I was already in love with the movie. I LOVE the whole theme of the movie, and most of all i love Ellen's ("juno") acting, and personality. I love the whole movie, and I can't explain it; you'll just have to see it yourself. Trust me, it's all worth it.So in the beginning of the movie, Juno takes 3 pregnancy tests that are all positive. As she tells her parents and everyone around her, she has a hard time adjusting to the whole process, and when things go wrong, she's not sure what to do. But through it all, Juno is Juno, and that's the best way you can have it.

I recently saw Juno with my two good friends. I had been awaiting the release of Juno since much earlier this year. With all the anticipation, I was sure that Juno would not live up to my expectations. I was sorely mistaken. The film was utterly fantastic. The quirky language was remarkable. It was a very real portrayal of a sixteen year-old girl who gets impregnated by her close friend. The end. No stylized crap or PSA-like tales to make it seem like a film to warn girls against protected sex and other acts. It tells her story like it should be told. Juno does the right thing and lives her life as good as she can in the predicament she is in. This is my kind of movie. Also to be mentioned are the great performances showcased. Ellen Page certainly deserves her numerous award nominations. However, I also believe Jason Bateman's performance was great. A man longing for his younger rock-n-roll years. He should be awarded with a Supporting Actor nomination too, but that's just me. All in all, this was a great way to get away from the blockbuster-y type movies I was bombarded with during the summer. A nice change of pace.

Emotional and Character Depth that Blows Away Your Typical Teen Comedy

posted on 26 Aug 2009

Premise: Teenage girl gets pregnant and learns about life and relationships with her new "status." Significance: Anyone calling this a movie about teenage pregnancy has completely missed the point of the movie. The pregnancy is nothing more than a vehicle to provide an important contrast across several different relationships. Case in point: there is not one moment in the movie where Juno evaluates or considers her pregnancy. As such, those looking for a pro-life/pro-choice agenda in the movie will not find one -- because there isn't one.Similarly, while the protagonist is clearly an intelligent, sharp-witted, and proactive, young female -- leaving some to believe this movie has a feminist agenda -- that is also not the case. This would not even be discussed if it were a male lead. Moreover, Juno by the end sees that she needs both her Dad and her best friend, Pauly. Most importantly, the career-driven adoptive mother's struggle is that despite her career success, her life is dominated by wanting to be a mom -- clearly not a feminist point.Instead, the movie highlights that people and relationships are not always what they seem. Through the story, the heroine realizes that her best friend is someone she loves. She realizes that her quirky and off-beat Dad and step-mom, are actually "good" people. The adoptive parents have the biggest character change in the movie, with the soon-to-be Dad swinging from hip to shallow and selfish, while the soon-to-be-mom swings from cold to warm and loving.Boiled down, this is a simple, feel-good, love story. The heroine realizes that her best friend, whom she has taken for granted, is someone she loves. Overlayed on this simple, heart-warming and timeless story (you realize you always had what you thought you were missing) is witty dialog and significant character development -- providing much more depth then the typical teen comedy -- like "Knocked-Up" or "Napoleon Dynamite". In fact, this is one of the best movies of the year and probably one of the best comedies to come in years. With this movie, Jason Reitman has established himself as one of the great young directors in Hollywood. Diablo Cody has also seen meteoric rise in her stock, although it will be interesting to see how she follows up with such immediate initial success. Every life probably has one good movie in it. And Ms. Cody apparently borrowed heavily from her own life in creating Juno. As such, her next endeavor will be crucial for determining if she is a "one-hit" wonder or one of the next great screenwriters.

Brilliantly funny

I cannot believe the amount of people that dislike this film. I don't think it was totally original, very few films are, but I do think the dialogue was superb. It sparkled. Some of the lines were brilliantly funny. The two leads were perfectly cast and the chemistry was very strong. I loved the use of the music, always nice to hear something original. I read a comment here that said they obviously could not get clearance for proper music. You must have seen a different film to the one I saw. There were some very touching scenes and I felt that the characters were well rounded. It's the sort of film that you could easily pass by but for me worked on every level. Touching, without being sentimental, very funny, well acted and not over long. Great comedy.

Cute and easy to watch coming of age tale!

I'd had little to no intention of ever watching this film, the idea of a teenage pregnancy set in middle America didn't appeal one little bit. Instead when I found myself watching Juno one quiet weekend afternoon I couldn't switch off.The films premise is basic, a teenage girl gets pregnant, decides that she's too young to keep the baby and decides to offer the child up for adoption. Surprisingly though, it's the young and successful couple who wish to adopt the unborn baby who actually have the real problems and are more unhappy with life than the teenage Juno. This quirky film skips along the 9 months of pregnancy but Ellen Page ties it all together fantastically. Her performance as a geeky young, bright, independent, feisty and confident teenager is absolutely mesmerising. And for me it was Juno's character that makes the film so enjoyable. I've seen other people comment that they don't like Juno's personality but personally I find her extraordinarily charismatic and adorable.Juno warmed my heart and left me smiling to myself many times throughout. Brilliantly written and nicely stylised filming makes this film easy for me to recommend.

One of the Best Films of 2007

Junoverse ID# 2098I have recently seen an advance screening of JUNO. I am planning to see two more screenings of the film. I had seen the trailer several times, and I knew JUNO was going to be one of the best movies of the year. I wasn't disappointed, and you won't be either. If you have to pick one movie this year to see, JUNO should be it. Ellen Page was an exceptional casting for the role of Juno MacGuff as a sardonic 16 year-old girl who finds out she is pregnant by Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). All of the dialogue in this film was entertaining. I laughed through the whole movie, and so did the rest of the audience. The soundtrack to this film is awesome. What The Shins did for Garden State, Belle & Sebastian will do for JUNO. They will change your life.Go see the movie at least three times, and then you need to buy the soundtrack. It is one of the best soundtracks of the year.

Best Film of 2007

After seeing the trailer for "Juno," I went in expecting it to be the best film of 2007. Anything else and I would have been disappointed. I was not disappointed. The entire cast is excellent. It is easily the best ensemble in any film this year. Ellen Page is in every scene and she is able to carry the film. Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman give their best big screen performances ever. The trailer makes the film seem like it is going to be a laugh a minute. The trailer actually uses some of the funniest lines from the film, but it is more than just a comedy. It is a touching film that leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling afterward. If you are looking for an uplifting film to get away from all the drab, downbeat films coming out this holiday season, you should see "Juno."

Don't believe the Hype

posted on 22 Aug 2009

This movie is way over-hyped. Most of the time I was just annoyed by most of the things on the screen.First of all the dialog is something a 16 year old girl would never say. Too hip, witty, and glib for anybody. She sounded like she was reading a screenplay, which she was. I mean it was sssooo bad that it took me out of the picture. Right then, it could no longer be a semi- serious drama. I think it was trying to be an updated version of Heathers, but failed miserably. Then, start-up the eclectic cool indie music stolen out of a Wes Anderson movie. I love Wes' movies but Juno is not that, its a wannabe. The hip music comes on all the time, to fill in the missing script no doubt. At the end of the film maybe the last 5-10 minutes there must be about 5-7 different songs one after another each for a different sequence. It was way too much. What do you do when you can;t raise the emotion with dialog, put in music and lots of it. Once you pay attention to it, its almost laughable. Its about the only thing I laughed at in this movie.Another Wes Anderson ripoff was the runners running through the movie. This reminded me of Tenebaums with the gypsy taxi gag.And lastly. She finally decides she's in love, still treating the guy like crap and always will. They should have a sequel to this crap movie where 3 days later they break up because she's cursing Bleeker out and treating him with contempt. This movie was a loser in every way and not a indie movie. This thing was marketed to death.

If only I were as cool...

Ever wish you could say the perfect thing every moment of your life? Screenwriter Cody Diablo pens a world where your wish is her characters command. After the first viewing, I was sold...after a few more viewings I'd rather have my ears stabbed by Celine Dion than sit through this hipfest again. Not only is the dialog painfully clever, most of the wall-to-frikkin-wall soundtrack is adolescent hipster pop-rock garbage. Remember the band Cub? If you're as haunted by their cloyingly amateurish Shonen Knife-ness as I was, then you'll loathe listening to the preenie angst chimed throughout Juno. A shame since great bands like B&S have songs cutting into the over abundance of squeaky juvenilia. Best Picture nomination? Hard to believe THIS was chosen over Superbad, let alone a film like The Assassination of Jesse James. I really do hate watching films that feel like a window into the screenwriter's slave-like devotion to cool.

A awesomely fun film for a certain those

Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) is a sarcastic, tomboyish, dorky teenage girl who was impregnated by her gawky best friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). After finding a couple in the Pennysaver, with the help of her best girlfriend Leah (Olivia Thirlby), Juno reveals the news to her gruff dad (J.K. Simmons) and dog-obsessed stepmom (Allison Janney) and her father follows her on her date to meet the couple: composer Mark (Jason Bateman) and wannabe mom Vanessa (Jennifer Garner). All may go well, but you gotta go see this fun rollicking romp yourself. I saw this because it was one of the films nominated for an Academy Award in Best Picture.

Supirsingly awesome

I went into this movie with semi-low expectations. I had heard good things, but it didn't look like a movie for me. Boy was I wrong.I haven't laughed so hard in a movie theater in a long time. It's a good clean comedy as well. It has a bit of a Napoleon Dynamite feel to it but has a much stronger plot. But just because Juno is a comedy, doesn't mean it doesn't pull at your heart strings.Ellen Page was fantastic. She had perfect comedic timing and you fall in love with her character. The rest of the cast was also very impressive. The acting in this movie was outstanding.I also loved the quirky music in the movie. Very cheesy but freaking rad.I would highly recommend this movie to anyone.

Cute and likable.

Independent films are an interesting breed. Made outside the mainstream studio structure, the best ones compensate for their lower production value with a better story and characters. Every year an indie or two does captures the collective fascination of critics and the public by doing so. This year's darling is "Juno", the name of the newly pregnant teenage girl around whom the simple story revolves.Like many such films, "Juno's" strengths lie in its unique characters. Foremost among them is the titular one, who has a singular vernacular and attitude that carries the movie. As she decides what to do with the child, she must also deal with the various reactions from her family and friends. But rather than become depressed or reclusive, Juno instead chooses a positive approach, dealing with her issues directly and responsibly. This leads to a relatively sunny take on subjects often approached in a dark or politically charged manner. The movie does tell you what to think about issues; it does not argue strongly either way; it just tells you what characters are doing, and gives a little of their rationale, somewhat like Clint Eastwood's phenomenal "Million Dollar Baby" a few years back.On one hand, making light of serious situations like abortion and divorce feels wrong. Conversely, the ability and opportunity to laugh at potentially overbearing situations is a relief, and it is part of what makes us human. While such reactions likely would not be appropriate in reality, movies are not reality, but an escape in which a little levity is more than appropriate. From the guitar-laced harmonic strains of its soundtrack to the aforementioned quirky characters, "Juno" is a quintessential indie flick. Like "Garden State", it has a few transcendent glimpses into the human soul, but they are too few and far between to carry the movie to extreme heights. Like "Little Miss Sunshine", it places quirky characters into unusual and often comic circumstances, but the humorous moments here do not approach the hilarity of "Little Miss Sunshine". Most of the comedy is based upon the unique dialogue or the continual series of culture clashes between Juno and everyone, which are amusing throughout. Some critics (Roger Ebert) are hailing "Juno" as the year's best film, which is a drastic overstatement. Such grand labels are a joke, and a statement on how monotonous comedies have become. Its ipseity amidst the dramatic leanings of most Oscar contenders makes the movie better and more enjoyable than it actually should be. Juno is a cool breeze drifting through an open window, not an eye-popping blast from the air conditioner. It is enjoyable and well-crafted, not the best film of the year, maybe a fringe contender for the top ten.Bottom Line: The movie is equivalent to its main character: cute and likable, but lacking in a few areas. Recommended primarily for indie fans. 7 of 10.

Simple, but Sweet Coming-to-Age Story

posted on 16 Aug 2009

In the winter, the sixteen year-old teenager Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) finds that she is pregnant after having intercourse with her best friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera) on a chair. She first decides to abort the baby; later she changes her mind and decides to give the child for adoption. She seeks for a cool couple in the newspaper and she finds Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) and Mark Loring (Jason Bateman). Juno tells the news to her father and stepmother and they support her decision. After successive meetings with Vanessa and specially with Mark along the months, Juno finds that Mark has not grown-up and is not ready to raise her son. Juno comes up to a final decision about the destiny of the baby. The low-budget independent "Juno" is a simple but sweet coming-to-age story. The narrative is original and effective, with witty and funny dialogs and the characters are believable. Ellen Page performs a typical teenager, annoying most of the time, with moments of maturity and others naive and silly, chasing the "perfect world" that unfortunately does not exist for her baby. The calm and supportive reaction of Mac and Bren is quite unusual but I liked it. Based on a glance in the reviews, I dare to write that this is the typical love or hate movie without mid-term. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Juno"

Incredible!

What an experience to see a film so well written and acted. Ellen Page captures the character of Juno with a depth that makes her quirkiness and dialogue believable. Not your typical 16-year-old, as stereotypes go. But isn't that the point of great films--to present us with characters that are not stereotypical? Allison Janney was fabulous as Juno's stepmother and the actor playing the role of Juno's father added humor and warmth to the portrayal of a concerned father. Michael Cera played the part as only he could have, with a mixture of concern, insecurity, and honesty. From the screenplay to the casting to the actual acting, this is a very memorable movie.

Not worthy of being in top 500.I don't no why this movie is so high rated. The story is quite simple with no hold on the audiences.May be the rating is mostly due to voting by cast and crew of this film.Deserves not more than 6.0.A complete waste of time. Can't be tolerated. So please watch this movie and vote,so that it can be removed from top 250 list.JUNO was a great disappointment.Help me in preventing other people from being disappointed.Very bad movie. Directed very badly. Was not up to expectation. In fact never expect anything from this movie.Make sure that you have your insurance before watching this movie. Also keep your will by your side.If this would be the quality of voting on IMDb,then that day is not far when people will stop relying on ratings on IMDb.

A Very sweet movie

The only word that can describe this movie is "Simple". The movie has a very clear and simple script, but it is the actors who have made it an excellent movie. Ellen Page is outstanding as Juno. Its her natural and honest performance which has touched quite a few hearts. Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner have both done great jobs too. It is hard to believe that an actress so young as Ellen could deliver such a brilliant and mature performance like she did. The movie has an uniform flow which keeps the audience enthralled. Dealing with a sensitive issue like teen pregnancy the movie puts across its message in a very subtle and understanding way. Kudos to the movie!!!
