Good for a lot of family oriented humor

I thoroughly enjoyed this picture because I knew what to expect. This was not intended as an award winning film, but was made to make people laugh, and that it did. It was in the mode of the old Laurel and Hardy movies. Smart remarks, and sight gags, galore. Viewers should just sit back and laugh out loud. The laugh factor is all this movie should be rated for, and the hilarity came at the audience in a steady stream. A good way to laugh your cares, and tensions, away.

I actually said that when I came out of the theater with my buds.Actual quote-Me: Escuse me, miss. Me and my friends want to get our money back from "Kangaroo Jack."Lady: I'm sorry. It's not our fault if the movie stinks.(I turn around to my buds)Me: Hey, this lady stole are money... (snicker) and she's not giving it back. (Lady heard me) (laughing, snickering).

January 2003. When you went to theatres that month, did you choose to see National Security or Kangaroo Jack? Let's hope you went with Martin Laurence because I did, waited for Kangaroo Jack on DVD, and was a happy camper. Kangaroo Jack is a bit of a disappointment while National Security was a pleasant surprise. A next January movie scenario aka the movie month in which all the known bombs are dropped is approaching. Will you see White Noise or Elektra? Or will you see Coach Carter over Racing Stripes? Time will tell.Kangaroo Jack stars Jerry O'Connell, Anthony Anderson, Estella Warren, and Christopher Walken. David McNally directs this family fun adventure... wait a minute. Maybe that was the problem! Maybe this should have been a hard-core action comedy. Oh well it's too late now...Charlie Carbon (O'Connell) and Louis Booker (Anderson) became friends one day on the beach when they were both kids and Charlie was drowning. Louis swam off and saved him and ever since that moment, they became best friends. Charlie and Louis don't have steady jobs so they have to rely on Charlie's uncle Sal Maggio (Walken) who is a mob boss himself. He gives them a job to deliver a truck of TV's to a warehouse. While driving, stupidity occurs and the nest thing they know, they're all over the news and wanted. So Sal takes the heat off their back by sending them to Australia to deliver $50,000. The only problem is, they don't know what they're walking into, both bad things occur from Sal and his mob and from the nature of Australia itself. When they get there, they drive along with their rented jeep and they think they run over a kangaroo. When they see it's awake, they pose with it for pictures but it then accidentally jumps away with their money. They try to catch it but now their stuck looking for the kangaroo while all sorts of problems arise. Estella Warren plays a girl named Jessie who is an American who works in Australia and she joins them on their adventure.Overall, Kangaroo Jack can be called a lot of things. It can be a family flick, a guilty pleasure, a disappointment, or a good comedy. The laughs are solid from O'Connell, Anderson, and even Walken. This is a good movie for the family. However the film just isn't done very well and the CGI of the kangaroo is the main problem of the film. However, if you combine those 4 elements above together, you get a sour mix for an average film.My Rating: 7/10 (Very Generous)Eliason A.

This was a Hilarious movie! I Can not belive that it used to be in the bottom 100! This movie was good acting, Jerry O'Connel is great, and Funny as hell from Anthony Anderson. The Kangaroo was cool too, the computer effects for him were so real looking! Also the Jokes and humor was a little inappropriot but still funny as hell.I Recomend this to any comedy fan out there. it will have you laughing hard throughout. my rating: 10

This sucks, this ruins everything, it uses on of my favorite funny stories as the selling point to the plot. The whole thing with people traveling in the Outback, hitting the kangaroo, thinking its dead and then dressing it up for the sake of comedy and some pictures. The punchline being that kangaroo was actually alive but in shock and it comes to and hops aware wearing the clothes. However, here's the deal, ITS A BLUE METS JACKET, you know those shiny rayon blue ones with the orange embroidery. Brooklyn? BKLYN? what the? Come on hollywood, the mets jacket is way funnier. Oh yeah, there's no mob, no money, just two parents, their son and their daughter.I LOVE telling that story, people loooovee hearing it. I've been telling it since 1996. What am I suppose to do now. Since this movie opened, i'm just making a lame pop culture reference. Sheesh, way too go, way to take the magic out of something.Honestly, I'm not surprised that we finally have a film version of the story and in a perfect world where people don't spread good things to thin, I'd be happy to see it on the big screen. It would fit nicely into a funny movie that stood out on its own. It would be great as a comedic tangent to an already funny movie like meet the parents or something about mary. Thanks A LOT,P.S. Some friends of mine have those pictures (them with the kangaroo and the mets jacket) somewhere, when I get them, I'm gonna have your balls.

Living In The Land Down Under...

A lot of people are way too hard on this film. Yeah it's not great cinema and yes it's macabre to put a jacket and sunglasses on a supposedly dead kangaroo and take pose with it for pictures, but the film isn't all that bad."Sliders" man Jerry O'Connell and his bumbling best friend Anthony Anderson are sent to Australia by Jerry's step dad Christopher Walken to deliver money to a contract killer, unaware that they're paying for their own murder. Along the way, they lose the money to the title Kangaroo and chase him half way across the Australian Outback, with the Supergirl beautiful Estella Warren in tow. Not brilliant but there are some inspired bits, like the sandstorm scene that partially saves Jerry and Anthony from the dingos and the reference to the "Dingo Baby Case".

An Aussie point of view...

I only rented this movie because I had a credit for a free rental at my local shop. I ignored it at the cinema, partly due to Jerry O'Connell's admission on Australian TV that we would all hate it (which actually made me LIKE him for the first time ever), and partly because I realise Americans have a particularly warped view of life in "the sphincter of the universe".I expected to hate it. I didn't. But that's not to say I LIKED it.While I didn't find any more than a couple of jokes funny (the mirage sequence was the only time I laughed out loud), I found it enjoyable to marvel at the cultural inaccuracies. The terrible slang. I found tragedy in witnessing Bill Hunter making a complete fool of himself, and recalled the better days of his career, when I quoted a classic line from Muriel's Wedding, "WAKE UP TO YOURSELF!" at the top of my voice. I gained comfort from the presence of Anthony Anderson, knowing that no matter how bad this movie got, it could never be worse than Cradle 2 the Grave. I found suspense in watching Christopher Walken, anticipating the inevitable moment when his head would explode, due to the sheer inanity of his dialogue. I hooted with joy that Marton Csokas, a NEW ZEALANDER, could portray a bad American caricature of an Australian hit-man so well. I got that tense, sinking feeling upon realising that Lara Cox ("Cute Girl on Plane") wasn't going to be in it for more than one scene. I rubbed my eyes and did one of those comedy double-takes when I first laid eyes on Estella Warren (in Planet of the Apes). And I WET MYSELF WITH GLEE when the bloody thing was OVER!Oh. I didn't even mention the Kangaroo. Best I don't start. So, all in all a cathartic, if not always pleasant, experience. It made me feel good to be Australian. Made me feel like a member of some sort of secret society, whose inner workings are shielded from the outside world. The secret is safe.Excellent.

Jerry O'Connel has definitely reached a new high point in his career. Only his first season of My Secret Identity even compares to this magnificent tour du force. There's also a fat black guy who farts and does lots of dumb stuff. How ironic, seeing as Jerry O'Connel started his career as the "Fat black screw up kid" in Stand By Me. Ah, yes, Stand By Me. I find nothing more soothing than watching a young Will Wheaton stripped to his knickers in an attempt to remove a gigantic leach from his privates. Man that's gotta hurt. But you have to hand it to the little guy, he sure was brave.
Especially in the end when he stood up to Kiefer Sutherland. But it's a little unrealistic, don't you think? In real life those four kids would have totally got it on.

Original and hilarious

A measly one-half star was given to "Kangaroo Jack" by the reviewer for the Daily News, and the Los Angeles Times reviewer hated the movie too. They must have just been in a grouchy mood. We saw it and laughed out loud at several places, something we seldom do with any movie. The plot was truly original, the scenery was breathtaking, and the characters were unique. Jerry O'Connell and Anthony Anderson remind us a lot of Nickelodeon stars Kenan and Kel. A hilarious scene involving an airplane restroom had a string of double-entendres that could have fit in an "Austin Powers" movie. Out of ten stars, heck, we give "Kangaroo Jack" all ten of 'em, mate!

Not as dumb as it looks

I went to this movie because a certain 9-year-old I know wanted to see it. I expected something "Jimmy Neutron" awful and was pleasantly surprised. I like Jerry O'Connell anyway, and he's good in this. The Kangaroo, tho almost exclusively CGI, is not a Disney-esque talking and singing kind of critter. It would just be hard to get a real roo to do the things they needed this roo to do (Ha! Poetry . . . ) Anyway, there are some good chuckles in the film and of course Australia looks gorgeous, even if American film-makers all think the whole country consists of the Sydney Opera House and Ayers Rock. The whole thing goes by fairly quickly and if you have a young'un with you you'll have a good time. And look for Christopher Walken as the gangster-in-law. Wonderful!

Shot to be an Adult Black comedy, re-edited as Disney kid pic

posted on 01 Mar 2009

I've actually been interestede to see this for over a year now. I always thought Jerry O'Connel had potential and I thought Anthony Anderson was fun too watch. Plus, Christopher Walken was going to be in it! So, I was hyped. Somewhere during filming or post production it was changed from the more adult themed mobster black comedy, into a Disney kid comedy. Strange. Very strange. I went to see it anyway and to my surprise, it made me feel like a kid again. Real fun ride! With some surprisingly good moral values thrown in. I loved Jerry and Anthony's best friend chemistry. This production has made up for Jerry Bruckheimer's crap fests of the last few years. The only part I still can't stand is of course, the Kangaroo. It was cute during it's first scene, then it just got old real fast. And the marketing for this film is for some reason playing only off the kangaroo. Luckily, it only talks in a trippy dream sequence and not the entire movie. THANK GOD! Oh, and I loved Trevor Rabin's musical score. His music and the soundtrack really made the film move!

A funny kangaroo, two likeable morons, a beautiful women. What an enjoyable time.

If you liked Mouse Hunt, then you will really like this movie. Jerry O' Connell and Anthony Anderson seem like Laurel and Hardy. They play old friends who agree to transport mob money to Austraila. During their trip they accidently hit a kangaroo. They put a red jacket on it, and take a picture with it. Come to find out he is not dead. And it hopes away. But both of them remember that the mob money was in the jacket. It soon becomes a race against time to get the money back, they team up with an animal helper(played by the beautiful I mean beautiful Estella Warren), and a whole lot of mayhem that follows along the way. An enjoyable film, that keeps you laughing. Anthony Anderson's comic always seems to take the picture. Give it a try, you might enjoy it?

very funny...

Well, I saw this movie last night on DVD and it was very, very funny, especially that scene when the kangaroo talks. In the trailer I saw, the only scene showed was that when the kangaroo talks saw I thought it will talk all the movie... and I was dissapointed a bit, but in the end I really enjoyed it. Bring out the popcorn and let the fun begin !!!

Allright

I thought this movie looked immensely stupid when I saw previews for it. However my dad ordered it on netflix for my little brother so I had to wathch it. I found out it was an action movie about as much or more than it was a comedy, and this is also near the top of how bad PG movies get, with talk about sex, language, and Jerry O'Connell seeming to make out in the water by a waterfall. Christopher Walken plays the villian as usual, the bad guy of the century he is.

entertaining lowbrow comedy;Anderson & O'Connell are great comic pairing!

posted on 27 Nov 2008

After seeing the trailer for this about five times at recent films, I had NO desire to see it. However, as a good parent, I took my daughter and her friend to see it. To my surprise, it was a very funny lowbrow comedy worthy of Abbott and Costello, but with special effects (and not as talky!). Also, Jerry O'Connell and Anthony Anderson are a VERY funny comedy team with superb comic timing. I went into this film expecting to hate it, and now I would actually pay to see another film that paired these two (The kangaroo is actually not an important element in the film, certainly not as much as the trailer implies). Of course, this is NOT recommended for people who do not find Bowery Boys or Police Academy films funny, but I do, and I feel that the filmmakers successfully achieved what they set out to do with this film. And that's really the litmus test for any film. Whether or not any individual LIKES what the filmmakers set out to do is a matter of taste.

Not About A Talking Kangaroo

posted on 17 Nov 2008

I had a choice between seeing this or Bringing Down The House. Now that I've seen Kangaroo Jack, I know which one I should of seen. I don't think a kid's film would have characters threatening other characters with guns and knives, Estella Warren's wet t-shirted breasts and Christopher Walken (big mistake). This film is NOT about a talking roo as the teasers I saw stated. The only time the kangaroo talks is in a dream sequence. Luckily he appears at the end complaining why he wasn't in the movie. So basically the ending is Jack explaining that this movie sucks. There are some funny points in the movie such as the main characters discovering the money in a airplane toilet and everyone mistaking their comments for toilet humour and the ending with Jack. This movie isn't for any type of age. It's not for children due to the objectionable content and it's not for teens or adults because they will not find any of the jokes that were initially intended for the younger audience to be funny at all. This sad excuse for a movie get NOTHING! Okay, a few points for the kangaroo itself. What is this I see, fart jokes that drag on long after be being considered unfunny? I'll just be taking my point back thank you very much. 0 out of 10

Deplorable

After watching the final cut of Kangaroo Jack, I emplore each and every film fan in the world to stay home and avoid this 90 minutes of torture. The 'comedy' and I use that word very loosely, follows the adventures of two friends who misplace a bag of money with a kangaroo. Naturally hilarity ensues. This film reminds me of the Holocaust. 0(zero) stars out of 5.

i hate that anthony anderson guy

this movie might be good for kids but they didnt have to include that guy. kids are impressionable and they might start thinking ebonics are cool. like its hip but its just not inteligent to talk like that guy. We're going to have a group of kids running around that dont make any sense.

Groovy Movie

I just read a couple of comments on this movie and I don't know why some people seem to hate this movie. Oh, come on! This movie is pure fun! It's not like this is my favourite movie ever, but I really enjoyed watching it. Nowadays people seem to enjoy criticizing the movies... It's like if you enjoy watching the movie and then tell anyone how stupid it was. Hey, this movie is not pretending for award nominations or containing the wisdom of the generations. It is made for entertaining. And it is really cool! Now here we go - we've got a Kangaroo, which looks totally groovy. A lot better than the CGI version of Scooby Doo. We've got interesting plot. Well, it's not brilliant, but it's just OK. We also have some nice music. Watching the kangaroo wearing red jacket and sunglasses and the funky toon on the background - yup, I like that! We've got some action, we've got some comedy and we've got love - but of course! It's Hollywood after all, typically! And we've got the gorgeous Estella Warren! For me this is more than enough! Relax and have fun!

Completely inappropriate for children.

This movie was marketed as a kids movie, it missed the mark by so far you couldn't measure it. (Possible SPOILERS to follow.) My wife and I sat down to watch this with my 5 and 6 year old daughters last night. I think we sat through a half hour or so before I just had to turn it off and send the kids upstairs to play. There was foul language, a bar scene where the main character is drinking beers and excited about how much another character can consume, a scene in an airplane where the 2 main characters are handling the ill gotten money in a bathroom and the people outside the toilet are made to believe they are playing with one of the characters feces, there is a scene where the mob boss threatens the lives of the main characters, and a scene where a man they are to deliver the money to also threatens their lives. All of this is just in the first 30 minutes or so, and after watching just that I read some other reviews on here that went on to discuss worse such as a wet t-shirt contest. I should have checked out family.org before I tried this movie out, I can only imagine what they have to say about it. Bottom line, this movie has gotten to be #26 of the bottom 100 movies on this site because it's pure trash. Parents be warned, if you want an excellent children's movie that's great for any kid I'd suggest Ice Age if you haven't already seen it.
