Absolutely brilliant!

I don`t have the words to describe this movie.I am only 14 years, old. Now is 1999. I have seen the movie a few days ago,and I am still under its spell. I think it was the best thing ever made.EVER. I live in Bosnia,Sarajevo. Unfortunately,I can`t even buy this movie, and I am going to regret it for LIFE.

Show me the real Paris.

Cool flick that distorts some of the usual action-flick macho-isms with a nice frosted layer of drugs, heroin, aids and dixieland jazz. The driving through Paris scene is enough! Very cool. Notice the sleepy euro techno track underneath it all; pretty sophisticated slice of sound. A somewhat oversimplified ending...but this movie has cartoon qualities that work nice for what it is. I love the actress that plays the bankteller... she is my dreamgirl from Paris.

Absolutely brilliant!!!

All those who think it's just another Tarantino rip-off should know that both directors worked together in the same video store before making it big, were co-writers on Pulp Fiction and basically have helped each other out on several projects. It's just that Tarantino made his name first that everyone assumes Avary's work is copying it. Not true. This movie is amazing! The acting is superb - Jean-Hughes Anglade gives the most charismatic performance I've ever seen. It's shot brilliantly starting with neutral shades, to the blue night club scene and finally descending into the red bank scenes that symbolize Eric's own demented and violent mind. Been scapegoated for Hollywood's violence, really no more than tons of other flicks - I think the violence embedded in Eric's mind is what makes it seem so disturbing, not the actual physical violence. Julie Delpy and Eric Stoltz also give maybe their best performances to date. See this many times!!!

This Movie ripped my heart out

THis is a GREAT movie. The imagery, and themes of alienation, and loss of control are just amazing. If you are not scared by a lot of violence, and ready to put yourself into a world that is scarier than most horror movies, Definatly go for this movie. It is worth every penny. But rent it first, because if you don't love it, you'll probally hate it.

Lame

come on! never have i seen a more contrived, indulgent Tarantino rip off in my life. An unoriginal bore with hammy acting, unispired directing and an idiotic story.

Good direction, bad plot.

Flashy camera work does not make a good movie. This was never more evident than in Avary's "Killing Zoe." The director is obviously a talented director. As a writer, however, he ignores key elements such as character developement, plot twists, and the most important element in any hiest film: the element of surprise. Despite one scene involving an explosion, "Killing Zoe" is frequently predictable and plain dull. If you want to see a good caper movie check out Tarantino's "Resevoir Dogs" or Kubrick's "The Killing."

Killing Zoe does NOT live up to the hype.

I've been told a few times what a superb movie "Killing Zoe" is. I was VERY disapointed at this lame, Tarantino imitation. Avary does not know much about writing a script, apparently. It seems that Hhe spent all his time setting up contrived and over used camera angles. He didn't bother throwing in any surprises or even characters that the viewer could empathize with for that matter. Low budget trash. Maltin was right: I've seen better straight to video sleaze than this.

Leonard Maltin hit the nail on the head.

I agree with Maltin's review completely, it was disapointing and completly average. Considering films such as "Albino Alligator," "Reservoir Dogs," and "In Harm's Way," "Killing Zoe" is nothing special or worth checking out.

Disapointing.

Despite all the talent surrounding "Killing Zoe" I found it to be routine and disapointing. How could the man who helped write the zany, unpredictable rollercoaster "Pulp Fiction" write and direct such a standard, dull movie? This movie rarely held my attention and I felt it was pretentious and contrived. Also, it lacked the surprise and insanity of "Reservoir Dogs," which it frequently seemed to be ripping off and copying off of.

"Killing Zoe" is just average.

"Killing Zoe" is a slow moving bank hiest gone awry film that is no where near as involving or breathtaking as Quenton Tarintino's "Reservoir Dogs," which brilliantly tackles similar material. "Killing Zoe" simpley lacks Tarintino's energetic story telling abilities. It also lacks intresting characters we can relate to, complexity, and plot twists. It contains virtually no character developement and no big twists or turns in the plot. Not to mention the huge holes in logic.

This is a very cool crime-noir movie

Don't listen to Leonard Maltin--a stooge for the Disney Company. This movie surpasses some Tarantino movies with it's nihilistic anti-hero, Eric, who can engender laughs and revulsion at the same time. Plus, if the French have not made Julie Delpy into a national treasure, it shows that they have not learned anything since they guillotined all of the smart people in 1796.

FIVE "GOLD" STARS

This movie has it all. Most movies I think of as "check your brain at the door" but, this movie was thought provoking and thrilling at the same time. It has action, drama, comedy, and believe it or not animation. This movie is well worth checking out and it deserves to be available on DVD. Let this movie be a wake up call to all the "cookie cutter" movie directors and producers.

Very disappointing. I'm a big fan of Tarantino/Rodriquez-type films, but this one is flat out stupid. No sympathetic characters, action is blurry. Rent it if you must.

Fast paced action film that is amazingly twisted

This early Tarentino Flic has all the elements of a great Tarentino action Movie. We start the movie with Eric Stolts, the American in France, has come to pull of a hiest with his French friend. There's lots of killing, guns, romance and intreague. If you like Tarentino movies, or just love an amazing action movie, this is a must buy.

Awesome!

I felt like I was in the movie. It gave me insight in to the world of drugs and crime and it is a bad bad place. *Spellbinding*

really great, if you're fan of dark humor.

probably my favorite film that no-one's ever seen.very likable, albeit violent characters, great look, and moves much faster than pulp fiction, in fact, it's a shame quentin tarentino is even associated with it. reminds me of 'love & a .45', another great film. both films share genius D.P. tom richmond. see it, buy it.

Don't listen to Leonard Maltin

This movie is better than Pulp Fiction. That is a bold statement but Avary is undoubtably one of the best writer\directors around. This movie draws you in completely and makes you want to rob banks. I can personally say that it led to my arrest for attempted auto theft. That being said, don't be scared. Rent or buy this movie immediately and you'll see what I mean.

I wish I was Zoe!

I wish I was Zoe so that someone would have killed me before I started watching this drivel.
This film was reccomended to me and all I can say is I'm glad I didn't pay to see it.
Quentin Tarantino and Lawrence Bender produced this. I must admit, I find that very hard to believe. Not because of the slow pace, crappy story and characters (Although that is surprisng for those two) but it's the incredible lack of money that surprised me most of all. Don't get me wrong on this, I don't care if a film is made on pennies. BUT IT HAS TO BE GOOD.
Robert Rodrigiez made El Mariachi on seven thousand dollars. This looks like it was made on seven cents.
I personally think that this film was no more than one of Tarantino's old Video archives buddies asking for a bit of money to make a film. Tarantino being the nice guy that he supposedly is, not to mention a film addict, was curious to see what his friend would produce. Now it went one of two ways.
Either Tarantino and Bender gave him the money and left him to do the whole thing on his own without any tip offs, or the guy just kept all the money, went to the local supermarket to pick up a crappy video camera (cos that's what it looks like) and shot the film without a care in the world eagerly awaiting the rap party.
Anyway I f you find all this hard to believe (Just like I did) then get hold of this and find out yourself. But make sure you do yourself a favour and when you start to get incredibly bored, turn the film off. Take my advice, It doesn't get any better.

I would be surprised if Lawrence Bender and Quentin Tarantino didn't agree with me!

craziness

You guys are nuts. Killing Zoe may not be the bank robbery film that Heat is, but it has many more aspects to it, namely gratuitous sex, drugs, and violence. Yes, the bathroom scene is a little much, and the movie is unrealistic. But if you're going to movies to experience realism, what's the point? Just walk outside. Killing Zoe is a perfect distraction for any of you out there who, like me, are to entrenched in reality to fly to Europe and take heroin for the first time the night before a bank robbery you didn't plan for at all. I'm personally insulted by the stupidity that would be necessary to call this movie predictable, simply because I didn't anticipate it was possible for such a level of it to exist and I hate it when I realize that dumb people still have the capability of suprising me. This movie is a classic.

entertaining enough

Now i'm a big fan of Qeuntin Tarantino(who isn't)he has a style
that is all his own with american classics like Pulp Fiction,
Reservoir Dogs(both written and directed by Tarantino)and the
writer behind the entertaining True Romance and From Dusk Till Dawn he turned the indie film scene into a cult phoenomenon. He
lent a hand in this as a executive producer and the film was
pretty good.Roger Avary(co-writer of Pulp Fiction)did good with
the writing/directing with this.Alot of violence,profanity,and
the usual drug use the movie is entertaining but Avary is no
Tarantino.fans of Pulp Fiction,Point Break,Die Hard,etc.rated R
for strong violence,pervasive languege,drug use,and sex.
