Getting married is a great way to fall in love.
Love always has the last word.
This is the story of two New York divorce attorneys (Moore, Brosnan) who are often competing against each other, but end up in a relationship nonetheless. When they get married, can they avoid the same issues at home that lead people to provide them business at work? One of the central cases in the story is the heavily-publicized divorce of a rock star (Sheen) from his wife (Posey)...

Pretty poor given who's in it
posted on 10 Aug 2009`Laws of Attraction' is not a turkey but it's pretty poor given the undeniable star power of the two leads. Pierce Brosnan is fine as the frumpy, charming, crazy like a fox country lawyer (well maybe not country but like country). Julianne Moore does her best as the city lawyer who is all business on the outside and all loneliness and insecurity on the inside, but she's not given much to work with, and to me at least she isn't convincing in any of the things she is supposed to be.The real problem with the movie is the script. Brosnan's character shows no development at all, Moore's develops but in an utterly tired and predictable way. The story line is very awkward, rushing some things and drawing out others practically forever, and including several incidents in which the events, or, if not the events themselves, the characters' reactions to them, simply do not make sense. I don't want to give anything away, but a prime example of what I'm talking about involves Brosnan's character reversing the course of a divorce proceeding by revealing piece of information which he obtained surreptitiously though his relationship with Moore's character and which I am sure he would have been barred from divulging in real life, and Moore's character reacts with a brief show of surprise and confusion and then moves on as if nothing had happened. On the positive side Brosnan and Moore are both fun to watch, and some of the secondary characters are very amusing, particularly Michael Sheen and Posy Parker as the feuding rock couple. I give `Laws of Attraction' a 5 out of 10.
I liked this movie!
posted on 04 Aug 2009I liked this movie for several reasons. First, it wasn't KILL BILL--with scene after scene of killing. This delightful, sweet romantic comedy had no explosions and no one was gunned down, treated with disrespect or lack of values and morals. The only action "car chase" scene was a solo car lost in the wilds of Ireland-- funny! There were wonderful "little love messages" throughout that were not preachy, but good relationship hints that blended in great with the scenes. I only noticed because I write screenplays (romantic comedies) -- I believe the average audience viewer would have just gone with the flow of the characters and the scenes. Well done, actually. The world needs more love examples and how to do relationships properly...with respect for the individuals and honoring the space they are in at the moment. The casting was excellent for all characters! Bravo! The chemistry between the two leads felt believable, honest and real. The hero had a relationship agenda and kept going for his goal--not exactly what you are probably thinking. But it was heart-warming to experience it along with him. Overall, a well done and throughly enjoyable romantic comedy. I recommend it.
Postively charming and cute
posted on 20 May 2009When i informed everyone that i was going to see this movie, i was told not to see it. i got, it's boring, don't go. But i still went. I loved the movie, it was very charming, intelligent, and didn't have all those hyped up hollywood stunts. i found it very refreshing. Brosnan and moore have this chemestry going on, and i think that people can relate. I dont mean in the sense that i'm a divorce attorney and i'm married to my enemy. . . i mean it in the sense of humor nature. at first, moore thinks brosnan is an idiot, but she soon realizes that he'll give her a good run for her money. and if any of you have even seen the trailer, or read the tagline, you'll know that they do infact end up married. so this movie is about them, coping. i really did enjoy, beause it portrays how peopel react to situations, and how they deal with other people, and what happens when things go wrong. watch this movie, and bring a friend with you who you know won't laugh at you! personally, i would watch this movie over and over, however riduculous that sounds! also, if you like brosnan, and that sort of romantic-ish comedy, i would recommend that you see The Thomas Crown Affair, if you havent already. it has basically all the same element, only a little more hollywood glamorous, and some stunts here and there, and a little more. . nudity. Have fun!
Even Charming Julianne Can't Quite Save The Day!
posted on 18 May 2009We all know that when RomComs are done well they can be excellent. But when they just do not work, it's usually because (in my opinion) they don't offer anything new to widen the parameters of the genre, more serve up a composite mix of the multitude of romantic comedies we've all seen before - films engrained within our collective consciousness. LAWS OF ATTRACTION is one such film. As a self-confessed adorer of the divine Julianne Moore, and an armchair admirer of Mr Brosnan (Grrr ladies!!) I did have high hopes!I don't think LAWS OF ATTRACTION is an out and out failure. It does have some moments of wit and sparkle. But the sad truth is the remainder of the film is simply too bland and mediocre to live up the exceptional charm of its stars.Julianne Moore (looking absolutely beautiful as ever ... nice to see that lovely smile of her's after all the tears she shed on the big screen last year!) has an old fashioned effortless charm and grace, but her phenomenal talents as an actress of incredible range are not even tested here. Yet she struggles valiantly on, single-handedly making the film just about watchable (such is her power that had this film starred - as it could so easily have done - Sandra Bullock - I would not have seen it for free!) Pierce looks as debonair and dashing as he always does ... but doesn't really convince due largely to the clunky dialogue, lack lustre plot and wafer thin characterisation. The main problem with LAWS OF ATTRACTION is that laughs are few and far between and the script is not nearly sharp enough to stretch its co stars or its audience. I know comedy deals often in stereotypes, but really - the Ireland sections of the film seem to me 'Ireland for America' - parts that are so cliched one expects three leprechauns to dance across the screen. If you love Julianne and/or Pierce, you might just get something from this. Otherwise I can't see much else to reccommend it, a crying shame when one considers the talent involved. How I hate to see Julianne wasted!!
2nd time
posted on 10 Apr 2009The movie wasn't that appealing to me the first time around ... but at the second viewing, I liked it more. It's a fast paced, dialog heavy and funny movie. It has it's weak points, but the humor and the good chemistry (between Brosnan and Moore). What almost brings it down (apart from the flaws in the script/story) is that it's too long. It also starts fast but slows down, after a "climax" scene between the two leads. The subplot with Michael Sheen and Parker Posey is overblown too (although it does have it's right to be there, for metaphorical reasons). If you can overlook those failings than you will be able to enjoy this romantic comedy! :o)
Funny and Romantic
posted on 10 Apr 2009I couldn't believe my good fortune when I saw that Laws of Attraction was on the list of films to be shown at the Philadelphia Film Festival this week. April 30th was just too far away. Now keep in mind that I'm not a professional movie critic, I'm just a woman that likes to watch movies. Some of the comments that I have read say that the movie was boring and predictable. Ok, the underlining theme has been done before, but the comedic element makes it original and fun. There was more than one point in the movie where the crowd roared with laughter. Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore have excellent on screen chemistry. This is a very fun movie to watch if you like to laugh and you enjoy the special chemistry that is specifically reserved for the interaction between a man and a woman.
Frivolous But Fun
posted on 06 Apr 2009This film is much better than the critics would lead you to believe. If the ads look good to you, then you will probably like the film.I thought it was much better than the Adam Sandler/Jim Carrey/Ben Stiller movies that come out every month. I thought it was just as good as "Something's Got to Give."I would much rather see a mediocre film for adults than any of the multitude of films out right now aimed at teens and pre-teens. It is not going to have you rolling in the aisles with laughter but it is not offensive either. It was short and sweet and sentimental, just what you want in a romantic comedy.
Just your average rom-com, but we enjoyed every minute of it!!
posted on 27 Mar 2009For a movie like this to work you have to like the actors. The story is secondary. I like Pierce Brosnan. I like Julienne Moore. I like this movie, although you pretty much figure out after the opening scene how it will end. The fun is watching the interplay between characters as they get there. The DVD's picture is superb, the sound is Dolby 5.1 but not much comes out of the surround speakers. The extras include an alternate ending which my wife and I actually like better than the ending they used for this final cut. It doesn't resolve everything as neatly, but seems more romantic. There's even a true message in the movie -- if divorcing couples spent as much energy trying to make the marriage work, as they do fighting during the divorce, then many more marriages would be saved. SPOILERS, for my own recollection. Both are divorce lawyers in New York. They find themselves repeatedly on opposite sides of the same cases. She doesn't believe in marriage, he does. He is constantly trying to court her, she resists, but deep down she wants to participate. In a bitter case they both end up traveling to Ireland to help decide who gets the castle that both parties want. In the process they drink too much and, apparently, get married. Back in New York they put up appearances of marriage to preserve their professional reputations, all the while wanting to dissolve the marriage. They begin to enjoy the arrangement more and more, then on a return trip to Ireland find out the "minister" was not a minister at all, they weren't really married. He professes love for her, and agrees to walk away, as she wants, "Because when you love someone you will do whatever it is that they want." She then realizes her mistake, and they end up together.
Charming and Delightful
posted on 09 Feb 2009In New York, the efficient, insecure and single divorce lawyer Audrey Woods (Julianne Moore) faces the charming, unethical but also efficient divorce lawyer Daniel Rafferty (Pierce Brosnan) in a litigation case. On the evening before the trial, they date and drink a lot, they have one night stand, and she loses her first case in court when Daniel uses information disclosed by Audrey in their meeting in the previous night. She becomes upset with him and their competition increases, until the rock star Thorne Jamison (Michael Sheen) and his wife Serena (Parker Posey) hire Audrey and Daniel respectively in the millionaire divorce case. They have to go to Ireland, where they get married after a drinking night. When they wake up in the next morning, they have to face the new reality of husband and wife."Laws of Attraction" is a charming and delightful romantic comedy, mostly supported by the gorgeous and sweet Julianne Moore, and the handsome and charming Pierce Brosnan. Their chemistry is perfect, and the situations, mostly caused by the character of Daniel Rafferty, are many times hilarious. Daniel is an unethical lawyer that uses any resource to win a battle, no matter how dirty he is. And Julianne Moore is also great in the role of an ethical lawyer that follows the rules. There is one very silly and unnecessary scene, when Audrey visits Daniel's office for the first time, but it does not spoil the film. Parker Posey is also great in the role of Serena. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Leis da Atração" ("Laws of the Attraction")
It was cute.
posted on 12 Jan 2009I liked this movie. I picked it up in the 5 dollar bin at Wal-Mart and was surprised. If you're looking for an original comedy this isn't the one for you. The plot is predictable, but overall if you want to just see a cute film about goofy love, this isn't half bad. I wouldn't have spent nine dollars on a movie ticket for this one, but 5 dollars at Wal-Mart wasn't bad at all.I'm giving it a 7 because it was, overall, predictable but cute. Julianne Moore is wonderful and so is Pierce Brosnan and I don't even like him very much. It's a movie that doesn't try to hard to impress. It knows exactly what it is, a romantic comedy and doesn't try to get away from that. Once again, predictable but cute.
A Great Film!
posted on 25 Dec 2008Many people decided to not see this film because it was under the category of Romance. I myself felt the same way. Though, being a huge Pierce Brosnan fan, I decided to rent the film and I loved the film so much that I bought it. Brosnan and Moore had great on-screen chemistry and it instantly made you like their great characters.Though the storyline may resemble many other romance/comedy films the cast brings something different to the table that makes you fall in love with the film. The script was very well written and it constantly throws funny moments at you. This film has been totally under-rated and deserves to be seen by a wider audience.Go out and buy this film, you won't regret it!
Too familiar formula not very exciting
posted on 19 Dec 2008While not a total washout, thanks to the winning performances of the leads, "Laws of Attraction" is full of too many tired, worn out ideas that have worked better in a half dozen other films.Watching this movie will bring to mind, right off the top of your head, "Broadcast News"(opposites attract), "Adam's Rib" (courtroom comedy) and "Intolerable Cruelty" (divorce attorneys). All of which are funnier, have more interesting characters, and better stories."Laws of Attraction" has good performances from Julianne Moore as an uptight, by the book, divorce attorney who believes that love marriage = divorce = pain. Pierce Brosnan is her unorthodox opponent in the courtroom, who for some unexplained reason pursues her.Frances Fisher steals the film as Moore's hip, beautiful, swinging, oft-married mother. The movie has a few moments of laughs, but because of it has been done and seen so many times before, the film just limps along through all of its predictable scenes. And even at only 90 minutes long, you can't help but feel that this movie is too long.4 out of 10
Slight and Unmemorable
posted on 13 Dec 2008Just caught this as the closing night main attraction at the Phoenix Film Festival. I normally don't care for mainstream romantic comedies, but I gave this a shot since Indie goddess Julianne Moore was one of the stars. Suffice to say, that didn't help matters much. Julianne plays an insecure, uptight brilliant divorce lawyer with the last name of Woods (which, for some strange reason, is also Resse Witherspoon's last name in the "Legally Blonde" movies) and Pierce Brosman plays her impish mismatch/true love. You know exactly what's going to happen within five minutes of this film. However, I must give this film credit. It looks great. Plot and character-wise, it reminds one all too well of failed romantic films like "One Fine Day" and "Intolerable Cruelty" that were just complete trials to sit through. But this film actually has exaggerated situations, sensible humour and star chemistry that won't have you completely regretting seeing the film. It's kind of disturbing seeing Julianne finally the star of a big-budget formulatic romantic comedy, but since they predictably set 1/4 of the film in Ireland, it actually starts to make sense (if not just to accustomise a mainstream audience to the fair Julianne's skin tone and red hair). Ireland also suits Pierce well for different but obvious reasons. The romance is forced and too predictable but the two leads have enough charisma and demeanor to lull the audience into enjoying a road too often traveled. The supporting roles are rather dull and unimpressive, but, again, the swift acting manages to carry a heavy load. Hardly believable, hardly memorable, hardly resembles more than an Irish Spring commercial at times, but hardly a complete waste of time for romantic-comedy lovers...or lovers period. 6.5/10
Loads of talent do not a story make up for
posted on 30 Oct 2008It's great to see Julianne Moore in a comedy role again, reminding us of the not inconsiderable range of her talents. Laws of Attraction is a rather well-worn comedy though that lacks sparkle. Two top divorce layers battle it out and eventually get romantic about each other. If the script sizzled it might be able to hold a candle, but it doesn't - which is a great shame given the great performances (Pierce Brosnan also does well, appearing far less wooden than in his James Bond roles). The whole film has a rather contrived feel to it that no amount of acting talent can salvage. Throwing in a bit of Irish countryside seems gratuitous in the extreme, a bit of cutesiness for the American box-office.
Great Hepburn/Tracy style romp -- Well done!
posted on 06 Oct 2008For any one who is/was a fan of the Hepburn/Tracy movies, go see Laws of Attraction! This is a beautiful piece of work in just that vein with a pair of actors who pulled it off quite satisfyingly.
Pierce Brosnan is as comfortable in his skin as I've seen him in years and Julianne Moore has become quite an accomplished comedienne. The bonus is Francis Fisher, as Julianne's mom (but don't call her that in public) -- My pick for either the next Mrs. Robinson or the next Auntie Mame -- she's WONDERFUL in this role!
The script is fun, the actors have fun with it and it's a perfectly lovely flick.
For those who appreciate Romantic Comedies, this one is spot on!
posted on 10 Sep 2008(Very Mild Spoilers)I grew up watching this style of movie at it's very best -- Tracy & Hepburn, so I went into this with a very skeptical nature in spite of appreciating Pierce Brosnan's work in general. Romantic Comedy, done well, is predictable only in it's broadest strokes. To be really interesting and re-watchable it requires that at least some of the predictabilities have twists without ruining the eventual outcome. Not only was this one of the most enjoyable of it's genre I've watched, Brosnan, Moore and Fischer were *wonderful* in their portrayals of their characters. Fischer couldn't have been more fun or spot on in her portrayal of Mom. Brosnan and Moore not only clearly had fun making this, they also managed Romantic Comedy quite well. For those who cut their teeth on Adam's Rib or Philidelphia, this one is a beautiful homage to its predecessors. Finding out that Brosnan was a fan of Tracy/Hepburn films after the fact wasn't surprising at all. I wasn't as amused by the 2 rockers as some -- they seemed, at times, forced. Their characters were not as integrated to the film's style as the leads, so felt a little odd to me. Good film, well done for it's type.If you don't like Romantic Comedy, don't go here -- this one is perfectly what it is!
007 meets (and shags) Sex in the City
posted on 11 Aug 2008OK, the heading was to grab your attention. Sarah Jessica Parker and her sex-mad cronies aren't (thankfully!) in this, but Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore are.Every now and then, they make a lightweight comedy romance with English actor Hugh Grant, and someone like Jennifer Lopez or Sandra Bullock, and it falls apart because Grant can't act. Well, this one boldly casts Irish-born Bond actor Brosnan with stage-actress Moore. It's not a "wet hanky" romance (as some reviewers were evidently expecting) but a tale of one-upmanship between two rival lawyers in Manhattan, both immediately likable characters, with romance, spy cameras and Irish dancing thrown in. Thank God there are no nasal Manhattan accents, people talking really fast about how much money they've made, women discussing sex in coffee houses, people whistling for taxis, scenes of the Statue of Liberty or Frank Sinatra music. All in all, well worth renting.
Loved it!Loved it!Loved it!
posted on 02 Jul 2008Laws of Attraction was absolutely fantastic! For me, it was the perfect romantic comedy! Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan really redefined the age-old saying "opposites attract". It was awesome. The characters were hilarious, the plot was great! Its a smart, witty, hopeless romantic sort of comedy. Numerous times I found myself completely carried away in some of those "hopeless romantic" sort of lines. It was well thought out. I would say its more of the intelligent person's romantic comedy, even though I know everyone would enjoy it! I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see a great, funny, intelligent, romantic comedy! If you're searching for a very tasteful, funny, romantic movie, see Laws of Attraction!
Entertaining enough
posted on 16 Jun 2008Audrey Woods (Julianne Moore) and Daniel Rafferty (Pierce Brosnan) are New Yorks finest divorce attorneys, but when celebrity Couple (Parker Posey and Michael Sheen) raise the stakes in their divorce, Audrey and Daniel set out to make their cases and end up getting hitched themselves. For the sake of their reputations they must pretend that they are really in love.Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan have a very good on-screen chemistry, and they are helped by some nice direction and a good script; there's plenty of laughs in this romantic comedy, but it's not a real tearjerker like some others in the genre.7/10 A fine effort

Very Enjoyable Film
posted on 30 Aug 2009Laws of Attraction is a wonderfully constructed film. Julianne Moore did a superb job as Audrey Miller, a well put together attorney with dating issues. Pierce Brosnan plays Daniel Rafferty, an opposing attorney who is masculine and good-looking, yet sensitive and caring toward Audrey, who starts out with a negative outlook on love. The pairing is excellent and the chemistry is unbeatable. Frances Fisher and Nora Dunn provide excellent supporting performances and add a great dynamic to the film. Laws of Attraction will have you laughing hysterically, then touched by sensitivity, as Daniel convinces Audrey to let down her guard and give love a chance. Each character possesses different qualities, and different moviegoers will be able to relate to one of them. Either you are the one who is always skeptical or you are the hopeless romantic who is always willing to take a chance. Laws of Attraction takes the viewer on a journey through something most have experienced, but in a unique manner that is sure to please.
