This one's for the girls...
posted on 18 Aug 2009especially if you are a wedding lover. I doubt many guys would consider this a good movie, but for all the ladies that like romance and weddings, then this film is for them.Tom and Hannah are best friends; they've known each other since college. When it comes to dating, Tom has a list of rules. He wants to have fun with the ladies but no commitment. He loves to talk with his friends about sleeping around while playing basketball. Hannah leaves to go to Scotland for several weeks for work. While away, Tom realizes he has feelings for her, and plans to tell her when she comes back. The problem is upon returning to New York, Hannah has the perfect fiancé in tow. He is a duke, rich, and crazy about Hannah. So of course, this throws Tom's plans out of order. Hannah announces she plans to wed in 2 weeks and asks Tom to be the made of honor. He accepts but plans to use the time he's spending with her to make her see Colin isn't for her. So, he gets advice from his friends to be the best moh ever, and there are some funny scenes with the other bridesmaids, one of whom he's slept with. They all go to Scotland for the wedding and there are times Hannah sees some things in Colin that she isn't crazy about. Will Tom get the courage to tell her what he feels before she gets hitched? It's probably easy to guess the answer.FINAL VERDICT: I thought this movie had some funny scenes and was entertaining. Patrick Dempsey is still cute and makes a great leading man for films like this. So, for all the girls, I recommend it.
Selfish
posted on 25 Jul 2009I felt really bad for Collin. Yes, it was a heart warming and sweet happy ending for Tom and Hannah, which probably satisfied some people. But confessing love right in the middle of the wedding? That's just selfish. I mean Collin had absolutely no idea about the chemistry going on between Tom and Hannah. And suddenly Bam! So called best friend or maid of honor suddenly shouts his love for Hannah. And the love of his life (or so Collin thought), Hannah, tells him "You are a perfect guy, but not for me" ON THE FREAKING WEDDING DAY! A day that should be down right charming has gone completely cold blooded. I mean it's a movie so all Collin does is punch Tom, but seriously...Imagine this in a real life. I think "My Best Friend's Wedding' is way better scripted because it's close to the reality. No matter how hard you try, and no matter how much you love that someone, you can't force someone's heart. Tom and Hannah had feelings for each other from the beginning in my opinion. So I'm thinking, why didn't they just click together before this whole Wedding frenzy? It's like Collin only existed to "confirm" Tom and Hannah's love. You might say "whatever, Collin will deal with it" But when you give your heart to someone and decide to marry that person, it's a life changing experience. i just hate how this movie portrays Tom "stealing the bride" as an okay thing.
I did not find it entertaining
posted on 07 Jul 2009Made of honor is supposed to be a "Romantic Comedy" but I had a hard time finding any humor, Or even a "romantic feel", in this movie about a guy who sleeps with a different woman every night except the one that he is in love with. the movie is quite slow and in my opinion full of "non-humorous sexual humor" The Character "Tom" is a womanizer, but does not decide to pursue his best friend, whom he is in love with, until she leaves the country and finds "the perfect man". She returns engaged it is only then that he decides that she is the one for him. He is asked to be her "Maid of honor" and he decides to be the best "MOH" and be there for her to steal her from her fiancé. It's basically the same story as "my best friend's wedding" which I wish I would have rented instead. I was disappointed, because I like the actor/actress, but they should have had their "chemistry" in a show with a better storyline and characters. the Scottish wedding traditions were interesting though.
Predictable, yet funny!
posted on 05 Jul 2009Made of Honor is a a typical Hollywood romantic comedy. From the beginning of the movie, one can predict how the story line is going to lay out and how the the movie will end. However, this movie is very, very funny. It will keep you laughing from the beginning until the end. I found it much more entertaining than How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days (which until this movie was my favorite romantic comedy).Guys, this is the perfect date movie! It is a romantic comedy, yes. The difference between Made of Honor and any other romantic comedy is that fact that it is from a guy's perspective. You will finally be able to explain how these situations are for guys. Your date will be very entertained and will laugh throughout. If she doesn't laugh, she has no sense of humor and is not for you.Even though Made of Honor is the pretty predictable, it adds some spice by showing the guy's perspective and adding quality humor!
Inane Dialog and Needless Scenes
posted on 21 Jun 2009A good idea gone horribly wrong. Patrick Dempsey is a good actor, but he was miscast in this movie. It just wasn't a good fit for him. And who talked Sydney Pollack into being in this mess? Did he read the script? It seems like there must have been too many writers stirring the pot on this screenplay. The prologue with the college scenes could easily have been cut. Many scenes were too short, they should have been combined. For instance when Tom and Hannah are outside of a restaurant and then inside. Or when Tom is talking to Hannah on the roof, then talks to his buddy on the phone, then talks to his buddy in person. Just combine the buddy scenes. Also: when Hannah goes to Scotland and meets her beau, then goes back to NY and talks to her girlfriend about how she met the man of her dreams. Well, you shoulda showed us instead of telling us! There wouldn't have had to be any dialog. Overall, the film is way too dialog heavy. The tone of the film was inconsistent. Yes comedies have dramatic moments...but with such short choppy scenes, it's hard to build and maintain momentum or emotion. The scene length did get better for the Scotland sequence. Sydney Pollack had the best lines when he's counseling his son. I almost want to believe that Pollack might have directed that scene himself. To summarize: the premise was good, the execution of it was not.
Turd Warning
posted on 22 May 2009This film is utter pants. Even if you like Romantic comedies and think you can survive the cheese-fest, this film will test your patience to see it through to the end. It is totally predictable, not even funny, and the cringe-worthiness increases as it progresses. The overall concept is utterly ridiculous. I don't care how in Love you are, you're not going to be someone's Made of Honor if your a bloke unless you already spend your days as a cross-dresser, and even then it would push the challenge of ridicule. If you're wondering why I watched it, or at least an hour of it, I was on an XL Airways flight and my MP3 player ran out of power. (Honest gov!)
Predictable, unoriginal, and cheesy. . . but not that bad.
posted on 20 May 2009Over the years, quite a few films have been made about the same thing: a friend, right before another friend's wedding, discovers his or her secret love and must scramble to claim the friend before he or she falls into the arms of another. Most of the time, like in '27 Dresses,' 'My Best Friend's Wedding,' 'The Wedding Planner,' etc., it is a female on the outside trying to steal away the man. 'Made of Honor,' on the other hand, twists that concept and puts the man on the outside, trying to stop the marriage of his long-time friend before she marries a Scottish duke.Yes, it's unoriginal. Yes, it's somewhat of a ridiculous plot with even more ridiculous plot turns. Yes, it was poorly written, poorly directed, and the acting wasn't all that spectacular. But, when it comes down to it, a film like this doesn't need perfection like that. It was entertaining, heart-warming, and chock-full of all the corny romantic-comedy elements that we've all come to love. If that's what you're looking for, then you might just enjoy it.Final verdict: 6/10 -AP3-
Cute and slick little romance
posted on 10 May 2009No one will call Made of Honor a feat of movie making or even original viewing but the romantic comedy genre has a lot of legs when it comes to viewer ship and when it comes to that Made of Honor hits home and uses the perfect recipe to make a very cute watchable romantic comedy that men or women can enjoy with a solid cast, good story, very funny comedy and perhaps stereotypical and predictable but sweet ending. Some comparisons to "My Best Friend's Wedding" has been made and although it has been years since I saw that film I don't see the comparison because I thought the latter film stunk and Made of Honor was fun. It wasn't amazing or mind blowing but it's fine and a worthwhile waste of two hours and ten bucks. Director Paul Weiland could have taken the comedy in any direction having had a lot of experience with English comedy like Mr. Bean and BlackAdder but you can see some of that style in the physical comedy and the loud characters in the film. Still he manages to keep things to a normal sort of pace for the American crowd and not be overtly outrageous in the film which will bode well at the box office.America's TV Male Sweetheart McDreamy himself Patrick Dempsey heads the cast as the macho, sex obsessed, and women user Tom. The unique thing about Made of Honor is Tom, who is the main character, is kind of a creep and not a very nice guy overall but he's learning from his mistakes the hard way and Dempsey is adorable and macho enough that you do like him despite his major short comings and you want him to end up with the girl even if he doesn't deserve her. Dempsey is a good actor and can easily capture your attention on screen but he shouldn't leave Grey's Anatomy for a film career. Long time supporting actor Michelle Monaghan is Dempsey's best girl friend Hannah who he has spent 10 years being completely platonic with. Monaghan is cute and that is her big benefit...her smile is cute, her hair is cute, everything about her is adorable, almost too much which makes her the perfect match to Dempsey. She is a sweet character and although the film doesn't focus a lot on her she plays the part well. I hope this helps her break the background supporting role mold she has been in. Kevin McKidd (who I came to know last season in Journeyman which I loved and has been canceled), is terrific as the perfect man that Hannah falls for. He's macho and sensitive and does everything perfect but as the film continues we discover he isn't the right man for Hannah, thank goodness because he is a genuinely nice character. I think McKidd might be one of the stronger actors with talent on the cast but his role is fairly small but he does get some great comedic moments with Dempsey.Made of Honor will likely be described as very predictable and doesn't try anything different at all from the romantic comedy recipe and that's very true. You won't find a film that follows the stereotypical pattern as much as this movie but that doesn't make it less enjoyable or watchable. The men in the film are macho and pig headed enough that men will find them hilarious and yet there is enough romance and cute moments for the women too making it a great date movie that won't stick with you for hours after the movie but you'll leave feeling good about seeing it. It's cute...did I say that enough times? Cute. 7.5/10
Remind you of WHEN HARRY MET SALLY?
posted on 28 Apr 2009MADE OF HONOR is a perfectly suited summer film of light and whimsy with a solid cast and moves at a good pace. The film is an "audience pleaser" with glamorous New York and Scottish locations, wonderful costumes and enjoyable humor. The writing was perfectly suited to the characters and their journeys. All during the film I kept picturing WHEN HARRY MET SALLY meets MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING with an update with MADE OF HONOR. Also, the Scottish scenes reminded me of those from FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, and with the sense of "never forgetting" the one you really love and letting that person escape from your life forever. The final scenes are truly romantic, with a beautiful New York setting and exactly what you wanted from this film.
Best Romantic Comedy I've Seen In A While!!
posted on 24 Apr 2009It's really hard these days to walk out of a movie thinking that every bit of it was fantastic. The plot was always moving, and I don't think there was any unnecessary "filler" type stuff. It had great transitions, was easy to follow, and it never felt like it was dragging or rushing along. Each character was interesting and realistic--no one was cheesy. Patrick Dempsey was great in this role, and so was the girl in the lead. They had great chemistry, and when they kissed in the bar in Scotland, I was so excited! (And I was glad they didn't get caught by anyone other than her mom lol!) I enjoyed seeing the views of NYC and Scotland also. There were several funny moments, and my friends and I are still quoting the movie. Can't wait until it comes out on DVD!
Romantic comedies - remember them?
posted on 22 Apr 2009Here is lighthearted entertainment for an enjoyable evening at the movies. Columbia Pictures tries to reignite the romantic comedy genre with this frothy piece. Made of Honor is nice picture to watch but somehow the whole exercise seems forced and one can only think of what could of been if the script was just a bit stronger...and the direction too. The movie takes way too long to get moving and doesn't know where to end....the final scene is tacked on.It's hard not to give away plot points since this film seems glued together from bits and pieces of 1960's comedies as well as things you've watching on the Lifetime Network. Still it is fun. And Made of Honor is a lot more enjoyable than Baby Mama which is just a long...very long...skit from Saturday Night Live.Patrick Dempsey looks good on the big screen but seems a bit lifeless. Do we really need scenes where characters discuss how pretty Dempsey is? He also looks a bit long in the tooth for the age he is supposed to be playing. But looks real good in a mini-kilt. On the other hand, Michelle Monaghan is enchanting and lights up the screen every time she appears. The audience falls in love with her. Other characters come and go as the plot line dictates. The three bride maids seem like a missed opportunity for comedy. The mother of the bride suddenly pops in...and out just as fast.Made of Honor tries too hard to be something that is not in its DNA: an adult comedy. Attn Columbia: there is nothing wrong with making a nice movie. Why junk it up? Several bits are quite vulgar and add nothing to the plot. An example: Grandma Pearl wearing a necklace of thunder beads and several tacky references to Dempsey's character being gay.In many places the cinematography is incredible - especially shots of the Scotish countryside. Almost too good for this film, it gives the film the look of a fairy tale come true. A big negative is the pop rock soundtrack that is overbearing and I would imagine exists only to have a soundtrack album.
By-the-numbers Romantic Comedy
posted on 14 Apr 2009If you're a fan of romantic comedy, or if you've had to spend some evenings on the couch with a fan, you know the basic plot of this movie all too well.Patrick Dempsey plays a charmer who adamantly refuses to settle down and Michelle Monaghan is his long time friend looking for stability and a serious relationship. Dempsey is about to make his move when he learns that she has met a guy and plans to marry. The rest of the movie is about pulling out all the clichés in the romantic comedy genre. While the movie is not great, what makes it bearable is that there are bits of humor here and there that work. It's certainly not the best entry but it's superior to many recent movies and you don't feel like skipping any part, which is already better than 27 dresses and other films of that ilk.Patrick Dempsey was OK as Tom Bailey but unfortunately, I think he lacks the comedic chops and sex appeal to pull off his part. Monaghan is well cast but obviously, nobody in this film put extra effort in what was from the get go a vanilla genre movie.Kevin McKidd feels underused and for that matter, so does Scotland has a wonderful background. Fans of the genre will be pleased while others will scratch their heads at the film and the choices made by the characters and wonder why they needed to see a movie that tells a story we have been told repeatedly for decades. For my part, I'll give it a 5 because it was effective enough not to be grating and allowed me to spend a nice evening. If you have to watch a romantic comedies, you could do a lot worse.
Hey, I'm a guy, and I actually liked it...
posted on 10 Apr 2009...well, most of it anyway.Utterly formulaic in every way, and so I could not go any higher than a 7 for a rating, but then again almost every single romantic comedy made for the last decade has stuck to the same formula. So it becomes all about the chemistry and any laughs they can insert around the edges. The chemistry between the leads was there (so much so that there is no way that these two people could have walked around ten years with this simmering between them without having a talk at some point, but oh well). Michelle Monaghan was winning in her role, and I was actually impressed by Patrick Dempsey's relative subtlety in what could have been very broadly played. He accomplishes a lot with a twitch or a grimace that many romcom actors would overplay. And the thing that made me warm to it were a number of good laughs, often of a raunchier nature you don't always find in these things, that helped distract from the standard storyline. Even the big plot contrivance -- that the male friend would serve as "made of honor" to the wedding -- is more just fanciful premise than clumsy plot device. The situation itself -- guy with platonic female friend suddenly realizes he is going to lose her to another guy and tries to sabotage things -- is something that resonates with real life much more so than the ridiculous "judge sentences you to be married" sorts of rubbish plots. Until the very end of the movie when they clumsily inserted a jarring clichéd romcom convention (the stupid misunderstanding when somebody walks in right at the wrong time), I was willing to buy into the story enough to enjoy the lighter moments.So...a movie that I know will have its critics. Not sophisticated enough for a film critic, many men will feel compelled to dislike it just on grounds of it being a romantic comedy, and soft and fuzzy delicate types will be jarred rather than amused by the rough edged humor at times. But I think its tastier than most of the movies in this genre for viewers coming into fairly neutral and open minded. No classic, but made me laugh and I don't regret the two hours.
Another simply romantic comedy
posted on 10 Apr 2009Another romantic comedy more. There isn't much to say about this movie, in fact is not boring and the performances of Dempsey and Monaghan meet the required level to make tolerable they as a couple, but the film falls into a number of same places that we watched in other movies thats why Made of honor lost among so many films of the genre and at the end of it nothing new provides.Neither idea is the most original or the jokes the most successful, in fact the plot falls on an abuse of sexual humor that at times results unnecessary and it only is used to start a laughter of a story that had no where to find the funny. In fact the film is the perfect movie to spend a Sunday at home with a popcorn's bag and let the brain rest from the pressures of the week. The film is simple, from start to finish, and that is his greatest success because it doesn't pretend to be what it isn't. It's only entertainment.
Despicable
posted on 27 Mar 2009For Tom (Patrick Dempsey), life is good: he's sexy, successful, has great luck with the ladies, and knows he can always rely on Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), his delightful best friend and the one constant in his life. It's the perfect setup until Hannah goes overseas to Scotland on a six-week business trip... and Tom is stunned to realize how empty his life is without her. He resolves that when she gets back, he'll ask Hannah to marry him -- but is floored when he learns that she has become engaged to a handsome and wealthy Scotsman and plans to move overseas. When Hannah asks Tom to be her "maid" of honor, he reluctantly agrees to fill the role... but only so he can attempt to woo Hannah and stop the wedding before it's too late. Made Of Honor 2/10
Movies as Entertainment
posted on 17 Mar 2009I have been looking forward to this film for a long time, for a lot of different reasons. I read a number of reviews before the film came out and I was well aware that the consensus among the reviewers was that it was terrible. It was reviewed as terrible because it recycled ideas and plots from earlier films. Really? Has this never happened before? How many trite and repetitive themes can one look up on IMDb alone? So, MOH is not the most original idea. I will give up on that one. But if anyone asks me if I enjoyed my time in the theater Friday night, my answer is that I was pleasantly surprised. Got my money's worth. Not every movie is Citizen Kane. I saw previews at MOH for films I wouldn't spend $1.00 at the cheap theater to see. But I liked MOH. People who put this movie down almost completely for its lack of originality, well, I guess we can call them Athol.
A Great Subtle Look At Relationships
posted on 11 Mar 2009This carefully crafted relationship movie finely weaves its delicate balance between humor and dumb comedy. This movie never goes for the over the top, ridiculous humor and instead holds back making this movie believable and watchable for its strikingly on target look at the difference between falling in love and being in love. A lot of what goes on in this movie is not what is said, but the actions that men oftentime stumble over when it comes to women. Except for the stumbling, perhaps unrealistic, underdeveloped man's man scenes at the beginning and another underdeveloped sequence towards the middle of this movie where Patrick Dempsey is doing the becoming a maid of honor transformation, and finally the horse over perhaps a more convincing swimming feat this movie is spot on in its portrayal of men and women and relationships. It is funny without being gross and it is particularly sensitive and insightful in its treatment of emotional feelings and what we are oftentimes afraid or and ignorant. Perhaps for those critics who somehow over look the finer points of this movie, perhaps its because they themselves still have a lot to learn and not yet ready to really appreciate the underlying qualities that this movie possesses. Solid Eight out of Ten Stars.
I hated it!!!
posted on 11 Mar 2009I love chick flicks and I love Patrick Dempsey...and I was so disappointed with this film IT SUCKED...The "humorous" parts were not funny at all...and I just think the script was a good idea but they just didn't know how to execute it right. Since the beginning you could tell it wasn't going to be a good movie...I even enjoyed 27 dresses but this had a lot side stories that just didn't go right with the main plot...I also don't get why it opened first here in Mexico...I mean I don't mind that because usually movies get here months after they've opened in the US but I would like to have read a review before just going because I wanted to see Patrick Dempsey...my husband wanted to kill me...we laughed because we couldn't believe how bad it was...
Enjoyable
posted on 05 Mar 2009This movie wasn't great but it was enjoyable. I'm not a big fan of Patrick Dempsey either (he'll always be just a TV actor to me). That being said, the movie was legitimately funny but could have been much funnier had they had someone like Owen Wilson or Vince Vaughn as the lead role, both of whom are much more adept to the style of comedy they were going for. I did like how there wasn't very much "cheese" considering it's a romantic comedy but some of the storyline is very unrealistic in terms of real life. Women will thoroughly enjoy it while guys will be indifferent. For all the guys who will take their girl to see it, Michelle Monaghan is great eye candy.

McDreamy Scores.......
posted on 26 Aug 2009First of all, 2 reasons I went to see this film. The first being Patrick Dempsey. I make no apologies for describing him as McDreamy, Sexy and Gorgeous and so lovable. The second reason, as it was partly filmed in one of my favourite places in the world - Scotland. The film itself I thoroughly enjoyed, it was funny and a joy to watch. I love to see Patrick Dempsey as a playboy type, but I also love the vulnerability his characters have. You see so many wonderful locations where it was filmed, but the best has to be the Scottish locations. The beautiful mountains and lochs - a joy to behold on screen and actually being there. Sorry got a bit off subject there.Back to the film, Michelle Monahan was good as Hannah and overall the accompanying actors/actresses were good too. Although the general story of the film has been played in many other guises before, please don't let that deter you from seeing it. It's fun, romantic and for all you McDreamy Fans out there, you will not be disappointed and look out for McDreamy's legs under a kilt - nice pair.....
