Way to go Marvel, WORST MOVIE YET!

posted on 22 Aug 2009

As a fan of Man-Thing, and being put off a couple years now waiting for this gem to come out,I was rather disappointed. First, the Ted Salis character is never introduced, he's just talked about, so if you don't know Man-Thing history you just presume Man-Thing is Salis. I can understand updating the origin of Man-Thing to include a Indian/revenge scheme, but Man-Thing goes through the film killing for really no purpose! What really disappointed me was, you never saw Man-Thing burn ANYONE cause of their fear! Anything that knows fear burns at the Man -Thing's touch! Itnever happened! He basically pulled Swamp-Thing tricks and made plants come out of people. Also to add insult to injury, Man-Thing hardly resembled the classic character, and you have to wait a hour and 45 minutes till you even see him! Marvel produce quality stuff, or don't do it it all. Daredevil,Hulk, Elektra, look at box off receipts, that didn't do well, add Man-Thing to the list of disappointments.

Please... save me from the pain of having to watch anything like this again...

Watching this dubbed version in Spainish certainly made me concentrate on the plot and SFX more... and how awful they were too. There are some films that you enjoy because they DO follow horror clichés, but this one just got silly with them, and not deliberately. Even the baddies cackling for about 10 seconds too long is in this film, along with stereotypes and 'makeyoujump' music. The only saving grace i can find for this truly terrible film is the interesting 'Predator'-esque moments of the creature looking around, and erm... that's about it...Please, even if you're a die-hard fan... get the DVD off ebay, and keep it in it's nice cellophane wrapper, and file it under 'oh god no' and breathe a sigh of relief. You'll thank me for it.

Just plain awful

I'm a fan of horror and comic-based flicks. I'm a fairly intense fan of creature features. However, that didn't do a thing to boost my reaction to this piece of junk.If its proverbial, it happens in this movie. I saw this waste of film when it debuted on Scifi Channel and they butchered the hell out of it. It isn't any wonder why it didn't open on the big screen. This movie isn't scary, it isn't suspenseful, it isn't even funny. Man-Thing was a boring waste of time. I'd say it was a waste of talent, but there wasn't any to be wasted. If you have to watch something, pick anything else and you'll be better off for it.

Disappointing...

Fans of Man-Thing comics will be disappointed. Likewise, horror buffs will be let down too. The story takes a little too long to unfold. Plus, the film doesn't even show the Man-Thing until toward the end of the film. I was willing to accept that the creature's origin was changed drastically from the comic version, but I definitely wanted to see more of the monster. Some scenes seem reminiscent of "Wendigo" with quick montages of nature footage interspersed with out of focus POV shots. Oddly, for a film that takes place in a swamp, there are no snakes or alligators present. Characters wade in murky waters without fear of any natural predators. Plus, everyone seems to only go into the swamp at night! Wouldn't it be easier and safer to conduct an investigation during the daytime???? Not totally awful, but it could have been much better.

Confusing Waste of Time

I knew next to nothing about the character, but I decided to watch this because I have an interest in comics and comic book movies. Seeing that it was making its premiere on a Saturday night on the SciFi channel (home of crappy B-movies) my expectations were low. However, I expected to be at least marginally entertained. This movie was originally intended either for a theatrical or direct-to-video release. However, since it came out on TV, all the nudity and a lot of the cursing were edited out. This was unfortunate, since nudity might have been the only thing worth seeing in this movie. The opening scene (in which Man-Thing kills a guy having sex with his naked girlfriend) is so heavily edited that you don't even know what happened to the guy.The film introduces over half a dozen supporting characters, all of which are completely useless, in terms of storytelling, AND within the universe of the movie. The movie portrays Lousianians as a bunch of stereotypical drunken, stupid, hicks. Even if there might be people who live up to that stereotype, it was annoying that pretty much EVERYONE was like that. Particularly annoying was the extent of some characters' drug addiction. A security guard is seen drinking on the job, and then putting cigarettes in his mouth even as Man-Thing comes to kill him. The characters who aren't hicks are either cowardly or stupid. Almost none of these characters served any storytelling purpose before being unceremoniously killed off, yet the movie introduces so many of them (and mentions several other people at different times) that it got hard to keep track of everyone.Plot? What plot? Basically 80% (if not more) of this movie could have been cut, with no loss to the story. An example of such a scene is when a hick villain leaves his brother to take a dump alone in the swamp. A perfect time to kill him off, right? But no, we hear the man fart, see him take a dump, fall in the mud, and then walk back to his brother complaining. What's the point? The few parts that did seem to be relevant to the story were muddled and confusing. The love story was completely forced, and made no sense. The sheriff and this blonde woman meet each other only a couple times, and she mostly just hates him. Then, with no explanation, they just started kissing. This movie really offers you nothing. There's no drama, because the characters are just a bunch of useless cardboard cutouts, and they're handled so ineptly that you can't even determine some of their motivations. There's no horror, because the monster barely shows up, and you always see it coming. There's no story, because nothing happens, and what little happens is poorly handled and confusing. This movie elicited no emotion from me, and I watched the whole thing in a bored neutral state. The only reason I'm not giving it a 1/10 rating is because I've seen worse, and the movie didn't offend me so much as bore me.

A serious competition for "The House Of The Dead"

posted on 25 Jun 2009

The movie has a serious lack of imagination and is simply one of the worst adaptations of a Marvel Comic. The CGI is bad even for a directly on video movie, the actors act like they have never acted before and the story is more than silly. This movie is a serious competition for "The House of the Dead", but it still is a little better than the so called "worst movie ever made".Brett Leonard, on the other hand, might have done a better job. But he did not. He made a very big fall. From a well made movie Virtuosity he has come to a very bad made movie that could have been better.CGI in the movie is far from good, but it is still not as bad as in Dracula 3000. The only bigger problem are the actors, because they do not have any orientation where the CGI character is suppose to appear. All together, the movie could have been even worse, but luckily it is not. It is the lower ranged B movie and therefore it is still watchable for people that are not lightly disappointed by a bad movie.

a true z movie if there ever was one

wooo-eeee.does this movie suck.i'd say it was a b movie, but it's more like a z movie.from the 30 minutes i was able to suffer through, this is a typical teen slasher movie, except that some crazed swamp monster is doing the killing.almost right off the bat,you have the requisite sex scene between two teenagers. there is some nudity in this scene, which would have been great, except the rest of the movie had to come along and ruin it.and of course one of them gets killed in a particularly grisly way.the characters have less depth than one dimensional cardboard cutouts.but at least this movie is consistent.the music is also of the z quality, completely lame and forgettable.for some strange reason,Matthew Le Nevez, who plays the town's new sheriff,Kyle Williams and presumably,a main character, tries to play his role as if he were in an Oscar calibre movie.this movie isn't even razzie calibre.i wanted to keep watching until it showed the creature,so i could bash the makeup and creature effects as it would only have been fair.alas,i just couldn't take the torture any longer and had to quit watching. i give this stinker a low 0/10

Comic book inspiration translated badly.

Brett Leonard directs this swamp monster flick based on comic book pages. Story and title basically generic and there is very little to remember; one exception is the monster itself. Kyle Williams(Matthew Le Nenvez)arrives in town as the new Sheriff and jumps into action quickly. The new sheriff is called to calm down a demonstration at the local drilling site. An oil tycoon has pretty well paid and bought the entire town except for dissenting area Seminole Indians. The demonstration is led by a pretty school teacher and nature advocate Teri Richards(Rachel Taylor), who will end up aiding the new sheriff and his deputies to track down a swamp-monster, who is killing in revenge of oil drilling in a sacred Seminole swamp. Others in the cast: Jack Thompson, Alex O'Loughlin, Steve Bastoni, John Batchelor and Imogen Bailey.

Why can't people just enjoy an entertaining movie?

posted on 02 May 2009

I am truly confused as to why so many people hated this movie. I found it to be one of the funnest and most unpretentious movies I've seen in a long time. It certainly beats out any movie I've seen thus far this summer (especially Batman Begins and Revenge of George Lucasith). I suppose it's just indicative of our over-Bruckhiemered movie going public who think "good" films have to be dumbed-down( ei Revenge of Sith, Batman Begins, Spiderman) where the characters quality is sacrificed, just so they can explain all emotions and actions they are doing, and actual tension, excitement and PACING are replaced by outrageously fake, really fast, very vague, and over done special effects that have no subtly what so ever. Why can't people just enjoy movies like Manthing, Sky Captain, or Constantine? Not that anyone should consider them along the lines of classic films (ei Indiana Jones, original Batman, etc.), but take them as simply entertaining films that are there just to be enjoyed? Anyone else think so?

Plodding, cod-awful horror

posted on 14 Apr 2009

This movie ignores almost all of the Man-Thing back story, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The execution and everything else about the movie, however, is.Changing the creature to an Indian guardian spirit could have taken the movie in an interesting direction. Unfortunately plundering the ideas from the superior 80's Swamp Thing comic and every half-baked horror film for the last 20 years take this to a level of tripe it never recovers from.Add this to a parade of one dimensional and generally annoying characters who's only purpose is to wander into the dangerous swamp and get summarily ripped apart. Often for no rhyme or reason. I wasn't sure if i was offended most by the racist security guard who swigs whiskey whilst banging on about 'Injuns n' coloureds' (whoa, why not just wear an 'i'm about to be horribly killed' t-shirt, hey guy?) or the inbred Lousiana trapper who, despite being native to the swamp, is still too dumb to take a dump without falling over. The dialogue is excruciating or dull in equal amounts. Most of it does seem to be the various characters calling each other's names while wandering through the swamp to their gruesome and pointless fates. There's little logic to the killings, either. Just going into the swamp will get you killed, though nobody seems to be worried about that. Or equipped with even rudimentary wet weather gear such as raincoats or gumboots. It's just lucky for them that every night is a full moon, what with their electricity dying every 5 minutes or so.The direction also wavers between the pedestrian and the highly annoying with said director displaying a penchant for focusing on objects and then upping the spooky score (oh look, a... well, a vine. DA DA DUM DEE.) And Rene the Indian can't seem to cross a scene without a whooshing noise & his own spooky theme.I don't usually like to trash a cast when they've been given so little to work with, but it's so hard with this one. Apart from the universally erratic Southern US accents put on by the all Aussie cast, Jack Thompson's pantomime sleaze of an oil baron actually lets loose with a full villainous "BWAH-Ha-Ha-HAAAA" at one stage. The monster itself is really disappointing. It looks OK cgi, but it's only shown in teaser shots for the first half of the film and when you finally do see it, it's hard to care. The back story is hinted at but not told (SPOILER: I am pretty sure that in a variation of the comic origin, the Man-Thing is a guardian spirit brought into being around the corpse of murdered tribal leader Ted Sallis. This is NOT made clear in the film) There's a whole heap of truck-sized plot holes in the movie (Why does the teacher need to guide the sheriff to the hidden 'dark water' when it's obvious that the oil company managed to build a damn rig there? Is there a reason the local yoda-esquire shaman throws himself at the creature? Why is Billy just reported as missing with no follow up when his girlfriend's been sent to the nut-house? Why did i watch this?) We tried to enliven this turgid piece of swamp mud with a 'drink a vodka shot when you predict the next cliché' game, but by the 50 minute mark (and a nasty three-for-one scene) had almost finished the first bottle and realising there was another 40 minutes to go feared our livers would explode during the climax. What else can i say? As a scifi adaption i was sort of duty bound to watch it, but try to avoid unless you enjoy the punishment.

Not that bad Sci-Fi Channel film

"Man-Thing" is alright if you ignore it's comic book roots.**SPOILERS**Kyle Williams, (Matthew Le Nevez) the new sheriff of Bywater, a small town near a Louisiana bayou, is welcomed with a series of missing persons cases. When he gets a call about a protest at Frederic Schist's (Jack Thompson) oil rig, he is informed of Fred's standing in the community and how the citizens feel towards him. As he tries to get settles into the town, he learns from a school teacher, Terri Richards, (Rachael Taylor) about Fred's pillaging of the local Indian tribe. When Kyle begins to experience events that indicate the stories might be true, he and Terri work together to stop the creature's rampage. The Good News: First of all, I have no knowledge whatsoever about the comic series this is based on, so that makes for an impartial viewing. With that said, one of the film's greatest strengths is the set-design. The swamp here is one of the creepiest locations for a film I've ever seen, with the long branches, moss dripping off everything, and the generally twisted design of the trees make for a some nice suspense-building. Two other important factors come into play with this as well: the fact that most of the time we are inside the swamp is late at night, which means that it's almost impossible to see five feet into the swamp with the mist that rises over the water, and there is an ever-present green-ish light coming from the swamp that makes it seem even more eerie than it has every right to be. I was really impressed with the location filming. It creates the appropriate suspense-filled atmosphere. There is also some great deaths in here which are nice and brutal, just the way it should be. We get an impalement with tree roots, and a chest mangled pretty bloodily. It's a pretty bloody film, with a fair amount of blood-splatter as well. The final assault is a pretty nice series of action set-pieces and other moves to keep it interesting until the end, which is a series of chases and escapes that will keep any action fan quite happy with the film. The title creature is a pretty nice creation, and while I don't know how similar it is to the comic, it's certainly original. The Bad News: I know there are some out there who say that the creature isn't that close to the comic it's based on, but as I said before, I wouldn't know. It's pretty hard to miss the feedback saying that, so it must be a pretty big change for that to happen. Also, even though the creature is a nice overall concept, it's design is pretty weird. Not exactly one to strike fear in people's hearts. There was a repeated element in the film that really annoyed me: the scenes shot from the creatures POV. It works at first to get the viewer a little on ease, then it just becomes annoying. The use it too much for it to be an effective tactic. The beginning of the film is pretty slow as well, and it takes a while for the film to get going. It's hard to get the film to get to the point and tell the story. The Final Verdict: If you can ignore the trappings of it's comic book roots, this one isn't that bad. A creepy setting and some great deaths make this one a little more watchable than most of the traditional Sci-Fi films, and fans of their films will find much to like here. Those more loyal to the comic will want to exercise caution with this one.Rated R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Brief Nudity and scenes of skinned animals

Pure Crap

This is the kind of movie that is so bad that you wish that it copied off of another film. You only really see Man-Thing in the last 5 minutes of the movie. It was less about Man-Thing and more about boring the hell out of me. When SciFi produces a film, it sucks with the passion that you can only find in a Turkish bathhouse. I've never read the comic, but I'm pretty sure they didn't have a Man-Thing comic only featuring the title character on the last page. Maybe they did, but only fat, dorky guys that have to collect every single comic book. Even then, they probably didn't read it. Perhaps this movie should've been called "Crappy Mystery Story featuring a brief appearance of Man-Thing."

Creature in the swamps causes violent deaths/boredom

posted on 14 Jan 2009

As usual for poorly adapted Marvel Comics creations, almost all of what made Man-Thing interesting in the comic books is jettisoned in favor of a muddled, dull storyline concerning a mysterious force in the swamps and the new-sheriff-in-town who has to figure out what he's battling. The problem is, the audience knows more than the hero and have to sit patiently while he slowly deduces, uh, things. The hero's approach is also as if this is just another job for him and this feeling is transmitted to the viewers. All the characters are standard B or Z film stock caricatures and, therefore, throwaways or expendable. And, the title creature is barely seen, making a grand, if somewhat anti-climactic appearance during the final act. Apologists for this lame effort claim there wasn't much more that could be done with the existing material. However, the original concept, including Ted Sallis and his efforts towards a scientific breakthrough, was there for the taking, dating back to the 1970's. The monster's original powers, including empathy and the famous burning when someone touches it in fear, are all tossed aside, as well. What is the point, then, of adapting a property with well-defined parameters and not using those unusual aspects to the character? Why not just create a new monster, if you're going to have that foolish attitude? Perhaps the filmmakers didn't want their film to resemble Swamp Thing(82) - but that film is much more entertaining, as a result.

Worth a watch, great for monster fans.

The movie is based off of the Marvel comic book title,"Man-Thing." The story is set in the town of Bywater that lists a struggling new sheriff, rapidly appearing corpses, and corrupt business tycoons among it's problems along with a monster that is out for revenge and striking fear. The movie has an obvious budget, short of real acting ability, and Spielberg special effects, but I don't think it really lets you down. It's still a good flick and worth the time. Bottom line; I gave this movie a seven based on how much I liked it. That's what you watch movies for, and there are a lot of other movies out there spending way more money on cast and production that I wouldn't even want to review.

The Wrong Way to Adapt Marvel

posted on 01 Dec 2008

"Man-Thing" isn't a bad movie in the way that most Sci-Fi Pictures Original are. I know this because one of my favorite movies, "Dog Soldiers", suffered from the label of "Sci-Fi Pictures Original". Like "Dog Soldiers", "Man-Thing" is more than meets the eye - a slick Lion Gates film meant for theatrical release and dropped into the straight-to-video stack. Unlike "Dog Soldiers", "Man-Thing" really isn't that good."Man-Thing" is based on a Marvel comic book. The character was pretty much the precursor to DC Comics' hit "Swamp Thing" . . . the two are actually almost entirely identical. The difference is "Swamp Thing" eventually boasted the writing of Alan Moore and went on to make comic book history, leaving "Man-Thing" in the mothballs of comic book obscurity . . . until now . . . where its been resigned to the mothballs of movie history. The problem is that "Man-Thing" isn't as much as movie about the Man-Thing as "Blade" is a movie about Blade. Instead, "Man-Thing" is about a bunch of flat stock characters who stumble around the grotesque swamp denzien for the duration of the movie. In the comic book, Ted Sallis is a scientist-turned-monster who was transformed into a green pile of gobley-gook while trying to recreate the serum that first produced Captain America. The Man-Thing is a tragic figure who protects his swamp with a vague grasp of semi-intelligence. Unfortunately, all those who "fear" burn at the touch of the Man-Thing.The problem with "Man-Thing" is that Ted Sallis' transformation is hardly addressed. We don't get a feel for the tragic soul at the heart of the material, and the very heart of most Marvel pictures. Instead, we just get a bumbling booger-covered Spawn who kills all people, innocent or not, when they enter the swamp at night. While never as poignant as Moore's Swamp Thing, the Man-Thing has been sadly reduced to the level of slasher horror. The CGI looks very good, in comparison with the rest of Sci-Fi's latest offerings. The movie I watched with intercut with commercials of Sci-Fi's "The Fallen Ones", which showed poorly animated 42-foot mummies lumbering around, so I could see the difference rather easily. The Man-Thing looks particularly good in comparison. It is comforting to see that, at least on an aethetic sense, the filmmakers have stayed true to the look of the character, but not the spirit.Over all, it was probably a good thing "Man-Thing" wasn't released to theaters. The only thing was would burn as a result of the Man-Thing's touch there would be eight bucks for a ticket, not the audience's fear.

What thing?!

A large number of people are disappearing in a backwater Louisiana town called Bywater and their sheriff is one of them. The out-of-town Kyle Williams is the new replacement sheriff and heads right into a murder investigation involving a teenage lad being viciously murdered. But he gets caught up in a bitter conflict involving an oil tycoon Schist and protesters led by schoolteacher Terri Richards. Although this is when Williams learns that what is causing the murders in the swamp is supposedly the Seminole legend of the Man-thing.*Yawn* - oh, man just thinking about this particular film bores me to sleep, but not as much as did when watching it. "Man-Thing" is a low-budgeted comic book adaptation (which I've never read) from Marvel and their production might be slickly handled, but overall it was seamlessly lacklustre with the usual hijinks and worthless characters. The lethargic story is a simple idea of clichés and a storyline that follows a monster on the rampage knocking off victims who get in his way. These rednecks and corrupted figures just happen to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Wow… how riveting! Actually, these types of stories can be enjoyable, but how banal can you get with such very repetitive sequences that lead nowhere and it does take itself far too seriously with its bragging attitude. All sides hit us with its message on corruption and that pollution is bad for the ecosystem… no, duh! But the way they go about it is totally moronic and aimless.*Yawn*… sorry. The script is laughably bad and densely filled with silly mumbo jumbo that could be the scariest thing about it. But what maybe really takes the cake was the uninteresting acting (that especially goes for Matthew Le Nevez as Sheriff Williams) and we're besieged by dreadful southern accents. My, my, my - the hopeless accents are painful… yeah, painful! Very much it lacks excitement and falls into a convoluted jumble of predictable turns, telegraphed shocks and stock characters.Although it's not without it's minor perks, but with these things in mind it still doesn't warrant any praise. *Trying to keep my eyes open*. What stood out mostly was that the atmospheric setting of the misty, swampy terrain with its green tinge of lighting gave out a broodingly murky feel. There's even some bloody moments, grisly make-up and a bit of flesh, but at times an influx of glossy CGI and shifty editing got in the way of it and it would lean more towards the aftermath. While, supposedly the header (no not the sheriff) of the feature gets limited screen time and only fully appears in the last 15 minutes for a 'somewhat' explosive climax. Throughout most of the feature we only see glimpses of it or POV shots and when we see it in it's full glory, it's not too bad. It's just when you have it in the main title, you'll be expecting more, but no we have to follow a soporific sheriff doing his business and dawdling around the swamp.Rachael Taylor as the schoolteacher Terri Richards is purely eye-candy and Jack Thompson hams it up as the villain oil tycoon Schist. The generic direction is weak with it trying to be hip with its montage of artsy MTV, high-tech filming techniques. Like usual we've been here before as there are lousy jump scares, kinetic editing and a loud, pretentious music score. So, can it get any worse? Yes… yes it can. *zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*.This direct-to-video effort is extremely flat and a lack of any new ideas really does bog it down. What a waste of time!

This is just too much

I've sat through every piece of crap that the Sci-Fi Channel has put out for the last several years, but this steaming garbage pile just crosses the line between awful and insulting. For starters, all the characters are paper thin clichés; no attempt whatsoever is made at portraying realistic people. And the lead character, the sheriff, is the worst actor of the lot. I could live with that, but then there's the environmentalist preaching. The first 20 minutes of the movie are absolutely nothing but environmentalist preaching. But I was a good enough sport to stick it out and then what do I get? The anti-racist message. I mean, for the love of god. These people weren't even trying to make a movie, they were only interested in bludgeoning the audience to death with political correctness. That's just too much. I quit watching after 20 minutes. This is below my dignity. Let me guess what happens in the end: all the people who work for the oil company are killed off, with the owner of the place getting the most spectacular death, and the sheriff and the blond environmentalist (having previously shown no romantic interest in each other) start making out at the end?Gosh, sorry I missed that.

Decent horror, bad adaptation

The F/X and plot in this movie are what you would expect in a straight to video low budget flick, but the character is handled badly in my opinion. In fact, Man-Thing seems to have little character at all. Maybe I missed something, but it left me disappointed.I thought the creature design, on the other hand was very good and true to form for a screen adaptation. If you're a fan of the comic, you probably won't like this much, but if you're just looking for a monster movie and don't mind waiting around for a good look at the beastie than this movie should suit you fine.Remember, I produce shorts because I have a short attention span, so the pace may not seem so slow to you.Oh, and having been to FL "swamps", they did build a rather convincing recreation.

It's decent..but sucks for a comic adaptation

First off, I would like to say that I love the way this movie is filmed. It has very nice colors. Second off, I would like to say that I looked forward to this movie for a while and I was a bit let down. One thing that bugs me is Matthew Le Nevez's accent is on and off again Southern and you can tell he's an Aussie. Actor. You never even get to see Man-Thing until like the last 10-15 minutes of the film (The rest of the movie is just tentacles of Man-Thing) and when you do get to see Man-Thing, he looks cool in some scenes and mediocre in the others. So the rest of the film is just wondering in a swamp at night (The sheriff only goes in the swamp at night for some reason) and bad acting. The swamp, the way it's filmed and Man-Thing look cool but it's not enough to save this film.
