Not horrible, but not great
posted on 06 Aug 2009Reviewer Bias: Loves Hilary Duff "Material Girls" is not horrible, but not great either. It is not anywhere near the worst film, but it will not be pining for an Oscar either. Viewers need to understand this movie isn't trying to be a deeply moving, sweeping, comedy epic. It is just a light film trying to entertain and get a few laughs, and does so successfully.Ava and Tanzie Marchetta are empty headed but nevertheless celebrated socialites, and the head of the Marchetta cosmetic company. Their world is torn out from under their feet when a scandal erupts, leaving them with nothing.Hilary and Haylie deliver comical, over the top performances as Ava and Tanzie. The fun they had creating these characters and taking them over the top is evident on screen. Angelica Houstan delivers a solidly delicious performance as Fabiella. The emotion of the movie comes in large part from Inez, the house keeper as the girls realize she truly cares about them and wants them to succeed.Much of the humor of the film comes from idiotic sincerity of Ava and Tanzie as they try to adjust to a "normal" way of life, such as when Tanzie gripes about not getting unemployment money and argues that she should get more, having never been employed. Hilary's line about what happens on public buses is one of the funniest in the whole movie and Haylie shows a different side in the more dramatic moments in the movie. Director Martha Coolidge adds a style and flair to the picture that otherwise could have been a disaster. This movie could have been better if it showed more of the girls' change of heart at the end of the movie. There should have also been more of a sense of panic as the scandal goes down. More time should have been spent showing the change of the girls at the end instead of finding clues in the middle. This movie isn't great, but it is entertaining and humorous and worth a rental.
How unfun
posted on 01 Aug 2009Starts out with a horrible version of the song Material Girl and gets worse and worse. Lame acting, very lame, nothing is believable, especially the ending which didn't even make sense to me, so how could the two clutzes figure it out? This movie was a parody of paris hilton's life I assumed. In the extras the two sisters talked about making the movie fun and zany, but it wasn't at all--let's go people, how hard can it be to make a funny crazy movie - especialy with your own sister. OH well, it's worth a rent only to laugh hysterically at the bad acting and plot.
BAD.....just BAD.....just HORRIBLY BAD.....
posted on 31 Jul 2009SNAKES ON A PLANE is a GREAT bad movie because no one takes it seriously. It's preposterous, implausible, stupid and dumb and it KNOWS it! MATERIAL GIRLS is bad because the people who made this movie took themselves seriously. I feel sorry for Angelica Houston--she must need money or something....why would she lower herself to appear in such a horrible film? And as for the DUFF sisters, I think they're highly over-rated, spoiled and are two of the worst actresses in the world...don't even get me started on Hilary's singing! Parents should NOT let their children see movies like this as it sends a bad message. And children, in general, need to get over their pre-occupation with money and fame--as if the glamorous life accounts for a lack of morales and stupidity.Thank God the Duff sisters may not get hired to do motion pictures on the big screen after this. They'll be stuck on television where you can just turn them off...
Where's the point?
posted on 24 Jul 2009You see the ads on your TV screen, and think "okay..." and then I heard some music in the background of the trailer. Seeing the name, MATERIAL GIRLS, wouldn't you think that Hilary and Haylie would make a remix of Madonna's hit? That's the only reason why I came to look at the CD, I wanted to see how much they ruined that great 80's hit! But obviously, they don't have the music. I'm really dissapointed with the movie, and the fact that I can't laugh at the 2 girls' music because I can't listen to clips!
Material Girls Review
posted on 17 Jul 2009This movie stars Hilary duff and Haylie duff which shows 2 materialistic young ladies that lose their lives to the financial loss of their family makeup business. You see the sisters character develop into something that teaches teamwork and hard-work you young people. Especially young women might find this good for them. Although it is interesting for me to see that the soundtrack is also done by the sisters. This is no coincidence of course. Hilary in real life is a hard working person for her career, which reminds me of her character in this material girls film. This movie reminds me of Madonna's song material girl. I am quite a movie and entertainment enthusiast so I notice small things such as this. Thank you for your time Mikhalt
Material Girls: The Good and Bad
posted on 09 Jul 2009As a huge Hilary Duff fan, I've always enjoyed her work because she's so lovable. Unfortunately, Material Girls was almost the type of thing I would expect from Disney Channel not MGM Studios. On the plus side, the Duff sisters were likable in this movie and I came out thinking that Haylie was quite a good actress because she really brought something special to her character. Hilary also took a step up and proved herself a little bit more as an actress in certain scenes. If you really like the Duff girls, go see it and have a good time because this movie does pick up and get kind of fun but if you're looking for a really great movie, I would suggest you look elsewhere.
Just because it has Hilary Duff...
posted on 03 Jul 2009OK, i know a lot of people think Hilary Duff is annoying and stupid and thats why they give her movies bad ratings. It's sad because every actor should be given some credit because they put a lot of work into movies. She hasn't done anything to make you hate her. I use to be a BIG fan of HD and people would always ask me why do you like her? I know the story was cliché and stuff, it was actually almost like the Disney movie Cowbelles with Aly & AJ. But, I personally thought this movie was cute, not the best but not the worst. I would recommend this movie if you just want to watch a cute, chick- flick movie. I gave this movie a 5/10 because it was not bad, but not extremely good.
Awful
posted on 01 Jul 2009Wow. This movie was bad. Terrible acting, dumb plot, unbelievably boring. I wanted to leave after the first 10 minutes! The Duff sisters are normally bearable (i loved A Cinderella Story and Raise Your Voice), in this, they weren't. I think there were about 10 people in the theater, and about 2 people laughing at the "jokes". I suggest not seeing this. Unless you can see it for free. Even then, maybe you should think about it... I want my hour and 40 minutes back. And my money. Kids might enjoy it... but none of the kids in the theater i went to were really acting like they liked it. So i can't tell you for sure.
Review for SpinerFemmes
posted on 29 Jun 2009First, I'd like to say that I am in no way a SpinerFemme. I am a DataGrrl and that's what I hope to stay.If you're thinking about renting this movie because Brent Spiner is in it, it's worth the money. Pretty eyes. Very pretty eyes. And he dyed his hair brown again, which is very nice (although nowhere near mandatory). The movie itself is rather pedestrian. I wouldn't have a problem showing it to children maybe between twelve and fourteen. Relatively neutral to positive messages about homosexuality and the main characters are very self-directed. The love between the sisters (Hilary and Haylie Duff) is apparent and clear, even in the scenes where they're supposed to be "fighting". If you're going to press me to be honest, I'd have to say that the movie needs to come with a warning against operating heavy machinery while viewing. If you don't want your kids to see it, feel free to assure them that they're not missing anything. But if you're thinking of renting or buying this movie for the Brent Spiner angle, again, IT'S WORTH IT. If only for the short shot of his skinny-but-sweet legs. And his pretty, pretty eyes (really. Truly gorgeous).
I haven't seen this yet!
posted on 29 Jun 2009I have not seen this movie yet, but I think that it will be really good. I have never seen a movie with Hailie Duff in it so I think that if it has them as sisters in it it should be really good. I am so excited about seeing this but based upon reviews, should I even spend the money to rent it? Is it really that bad? Well, I think it will be good and I am going to rent it today! Who cares about what everyone else thinks about it. She is my favorite actress and I think it will be really good if her sister is in it too. There is one thing though that I don't think that could be good about this movie. Halie Duff hasn't acted very much before, I know that Hilary is going to be good because she has been in a lot of things before.I don't have anything against Hailie but I just don't think that she will be as good in this as another experienced actress would be. I heard once that Hailie went to Los Angelos to try in get started in an acting career and that they saw Hirary as a better actress instead and that is how she got started. Hailie never went anywhere really as far as an acting career but her sister did so now Hailie is kinda taking advantage of Hilary's career. I think that she is just trying to use Hilary as a way for her to try and get famous again. I don't think it is going to work though. That's just what I think.
One Of Hilary's Best!
posted on 24 Apr 2009people are dumb when they said this suck! i loved this movie, yeah OK we have to admit it missed out on something like it doesn't show any city or something it doesn't look like it is the real world, many of the things in the movie look like a TV show not like a movie but even though that i love it.it shows you that in life what counts is yourself and your attitude not your money or who your parents are, you build up your own destiny, i mean like in the movie your parents are not gonna be always there to solve your problems and sometimes you got to solve your problems and move on! specially the thing i love about this movie is that the duff's are together and thats a plus! the only bad thing is that no counting them, the movie doesn't have famous talent (not talking about Angelica Huston) and thats bad cause being the duff's they need to be with popular stars of the moment but please don't listen to critics and watch this amazing movie!
Worst ever
posted on 22 Apr 2009This movie is close to being the worst movie I've ever seen. The actors suck, there's no real dialogue and the plot doesn't have anything into it. The Duff sisters act so poorly, and the other characters aren't good, either. All the characters say are some stupid one-liners and the plot doesn't really get a chance to grow (like it would matter, because the whole idea sucks).I saw Material Girls on an airplane when flying from Finland to Hong Kong. We continued our trip from HK to Cambodia, and another airline showed the movie. It was a nightmare, and the second time especially was breaking my balls. If I could give zero out of ten, I would. This movie is a total waste of money. One of those pieces that should've never been made.
This movie was both Good And FUNNY!!!
posted on 08 Apr 2009This movie was better then I expected. I like the diversity in the movie and I never expected it to be so funny. The acting was great and real. There are parts played by Hilary Duff that I would have never seen her play. Like the part when she dressed up like julia roberts(mini skirt and a push up bra haha) in order to get paperwork that she needed to solve the case. Haylie's role was good too very sassy and controlling. The guys were just perfect they were the cherry on the cake to make the movie perfect! No matter what the old guy critics say (which is just their opinion) this movie was really good and I recommend it! PLUs there's hilarious bloopers in the end!!! it was soo funny!
I just saw it and....
posted on 02 Apr 2009Okay I have heard terrible feedback from people who saw this movie. I will tell you though that you won't find any TERRIBLE feedback in this review. I really liked this movie. I thought it was EXTREMELY unpredictable and that made it great! This is a really enjoyable film. The acting was GREAT! The Duff sisters are meant for acting! On screen they are just beautiful! I will admit that some parts were a tad bit boring but that is alright! And I will say that some funny parts in the trailer are mixed up. For example when the sisters go on a bus, and in the trailer the bus driver says it will be $1.35 and then Haylie Duff says that she isn't tipping him till she knows how good his service is, well in the movie, they get on the bus, the bus driver holds them back, Haylie says her line, and then the bus driver says how much it costs. But I thought it was funny and surprisingly emotional at some parts. So I encourage you to see this movie!
Not That Bad...
posted on 27 Mar 2009No, I don't think "Material Girls" was as bad as everyone's been saying. Truth must be said: there's a lot of people who don't like Hilary Duff, and will give the movie a zero rating just because she's on it. I like her, but I was truly disappointed with her last movies. "Raise Your Voice" was one of the worst of 2004, and so was "The Perfect Man" for 2005. "Material Girls" isn't as bad as any of these; which doesn't mean it's actually a good movie. The acting is pretty cheap. Hilary and Haylie Duff can do better than this, for sure. There are (a few) moments in the movie where they shine, with beauty and comic timing, but most of the time they just don't show much emotion. I believe the script is to blame: the writing is bipolar. At a moment, it makes us think they are just two blonde bimbos, whose only real activity in life is to date B-list TV actors and buy clothes. Then later, it shows us that they're actually good-natured, intelligent, and have the best of intentions. And then, they're shown as bimbos again. The situations are idiotic at worst, and most of the jokes are about the girls breaking their heels or doing Gross things like jumping on trash. A few jokes in which they are shown as innocent are funny, like a moment when they give their car keys to the "valets". But these jokes get more and more rare, as the script tries to give the characters complexity. but the Duff sisters aren't the only who suffer with their roles: Angelica Huston has to deal with an overdone character (which is a shame, because she overacts wonderfully), and the romantic counterparts for our heroins, played by Lukas Haas (poor boy... such a nice actor doing such unpleasant movies) and Marcus Coloma are wasted. Like in most teen-flicks for girls, they don't have anything to do, except look "cute" and smile. The movie, I have to say, isn't all bad: it's surely unpleasant for anyone over 14, but the Duff sisters are enjoyable to watch. They should look for projects better than this, where they can develop they're comic timing. It reminded me a lot of "Uptown Girls", which, by itself, wasn't spectacular, but featured a similar plot, better writing and better jokes. But I'll give "Material Girls" bonus points for being a lot bolder than Duff's previous pictures. I was surprised MPAA gave this a PG rating, since it features an use of the four-letters "s" word. There's even a scene in which Hilary seduces a man and gets arrested. A sign that she might be looking for more mature roles in the future. We hope so.
loved it
posted on 11 Mar 2009why is everyone complaining about how bad this movie was. It really wasn't at bad, Hilary and Haylie were great as Tanzie and Ava. Hilary looked gorgeous and Haylie was very pretty and i never ever thought she was. The quotes were cute and the acting was fine. This movie got underrated for no reason. It was actually a really good movie and doesn't deserve to be on the bottom worst movies. It was a cute and a fun movie and it was well done and well setup. I don't think i was bored one bit in this movie. Hilary made a good movie and i think it got a bagging just cause Hilary is in it. The theme song material girls was a great version by hilary and Haylie, the whole movie rocked but it definitely depends on your style and taste in movies.

From Justin to Kelly and Troll 2 actually look good after this film was made
posted on 24 Aug 2009If there is a movie that is worse than this, I have yet to find it. How can anybody enjoy this movie; acting was horrible, yes the Duff sisters can't act together; a stupid director is never good; and to top it all off there is no story-line at all, at all. It's Supposed to be two heiresses trying to figure out a scandal taking place, but you never really hear about it. One Duff=Bad Two Duffs=Incontrovertible badDo not go and see this film. The main thing about this film is that both sisters do not try hard. It just rushes from a pointless scene to an even more pointless scene. If you adore the Duff girls go and see it by all means, but if you're looking for something more interesting, go and see Charlotte's Webb or Eragon.
