and the razzie goes to...

Well... top 10 worst movies ever!! Eddie Murphy didn't even try to act in this movie. I have to say, this movie is OK if you are between the ages of 1-4. i am 23 and don't get me worng, i do enjoy a good childish comedy sometimes, but this, was awful. Period. I would really like to see Eddie Murphy get another Razzie award for this movie. I would LOVE to see this movie get a worst picture nomination too. I don't understand why it wouldn't. Eddie Murphy did do a few good movies, Dreamgirls, Daddy Day Care, Life. But this movie ranks with Norbit as one of his absolute worst ever! Just looking at that evil grin on eddie murphys face on the front cover gives me the gooonies. Well... all my advice is for all you people out there who don't want to embarrass yourself watching this, don't. Save yourself the money and time.

hide... hide... hide from Dave!

This movie might be Eddie's worst movie to date... YES, it's even worse then Norbit and Poluto Nash! The premise for the movie was good, but the script was so bad I think my 5 year old nephew could've written funny jokes. The special effect aren't that special and the acting is so lame and dismal it was unbearable. But lets not stop there... how about those stereotypes, weren't they clever! I just love how the space crew embraces every known stereo type and even then, they can't come up with a funny joke! Instead the movie just becomes insulting to every black, white, gay and straight person on the face of the planet.Isn't it about time for someone to meet "Eddie" and escort him to the nearest freeway on-ramp leading out of Hollywood.~Betty

Didn't expect much ... and was greatly surprised

Meet Dave isn't an act of comic genius, but it was much better than I expected. Murphy plays the captain of a space crew from planet Nil, which possibly stands for Nerds In Laboratories since they are a highly technical but socially inept race. Imagine, if you will, an offspring of Dr. Spock and Dr. Strangelove. The film has some great (though too-often predictable) moments of comedy as Murphy and gang navigate the earthly environment in search of the Orb. Nice sub-text around: what if all you knew came from Google? But not-so-nice sub-text about the environment, too much like a frying pan upside the head for my tastes. All in all enjoyable as long as you don't think too much.(Now, if Murphy would just do another Beverly Hills Cop I'd be really excited.)

Pathetic!

I just lost 1 hour of my life watching this. Why just one? I try ed to watch the whole thing, but the Cuban restaurant bit was the end of all my hopes that this disaster will improve. You cant have a whole movie based just on Eddie Murphy making stupid faces at the camera. This movie is just horrible, worst I have seen since Bob the butler. Why o why do they make these "masterworks"? I guess the worst movie of the year award has to go somewhere. O yeah, and I would not insult the intelligence of my children by taking them to see this disaster. There time would be far better spend reading some children s book, then watching this horror.

The pieces work but nothing come together

Eddie Murphy misfire about and alien ship that looks like Eddie Murphy and is piloted by Eddie Murphy and a hundred or do other tiny people who have to find a missing orb. This should work. But it doesn't. Its not as stupid as some of the other recent Murphy films , say Norbit or Pluto Nash, but its close. Not because the jokes and material is bad as such, rather because nothing comes together the way it should. I know I liked what I saw in the trailers but what was up on the screen really annoyed me, even the good stuff from said trailer. I have a feeling this was a better script then film and cutting by the studio mucked it all up. Given a choice I'd take a pass.

If it makes you laugh then why fight it?!

Before I start ranting I would like to make it clear that I think this site is fantastic as it epitomises democracy and allows people to present all their contrasting opinions which are all equally valid. However I have a problem with some people who seem to take a snobbish attitude to films (and culture in general), and seem to discount a film's credibility before/after they've seen it, often due to the actors or even the audience that it is aimed at. If you don't like silly films with dubious reality, then why go and see an Eddie Murphy film in the first place?!In my opinion each film should be rated on it's individual merits, and how it compares to the genre. Why not go and see a film with an open mind and then rate it on the reaction that it provokes? This is a film for children and adults alike, not meant to be taken seriously but is a Hilarious film! There is not one person in the cinema who was not creasing themselves...I was sat next to a man in his fifties who enjoyed it just as much as I did!I am normally a bit undecided when it comes to Eddie Murphy, but this is by far the best film I have seen him in. His physical comedy and facial expressions are comic genius, and there are plenty of laugh out loud moments. Yes, it is definitely a silly comedy and the plot deteriorates vastly in the last third and is swamped in sentimentality. However isn't that what you expect from Eddie Murphy and a Hollywood film?! If you fancy 90 minutes of fun and pure laughter then this is the film for you...however if you are not a fan of Eddie Murphy or silly comedy (elf, galaxy quest etc) then give it a wide berth!

A great family comedy for everyone

This film is about an alien spaceship coming to Earth to find the Orb. The crew learns about the Earth culture, people and emotions along the way."Meet Dave" captures on the cultural shock of aliens coming to Earth. Just like humans going to another country, aliens don't quite now what do do or say in another planet! It also mixes emotional elements. The relationship between Gina and Dave is convincingly portrayed, and they have great chemistry with each other. The scenes in the theme park is heartwarming, and the dance scene is pure fun! The plot is imaginative, clean and fun. It has so many good lines, such as the ones making fun of the names Google and Yahoo. The plot is funny and entertaining, and the best part of it is that it makes sense! I am so tired of silly comedies, filled with grossed out toilet jokes. "Meet Dave" is a refreshing change in the comedy genre.I thoroughly enjoyed "Meet Dave". I think the low ratings are from the haters who have not watched the film, just like people giving a "1" to a Paris Hilton film without watching it. This film totally deserves a much higher rating.

One of Eddie Murphy's worst movies

Let's start with what was good…um, well…I got a really good parking space. Seriously. A really good parking space. And this was at The Esquire. If you've been there then you know what an accomplishment that was. Now, on to the rest of the movie. Not since Police Academy 7: Mission To Moscow has a movie so short felt so long.In Meet Dave a crew of tiny aliens (space not illegal) pilot a spaceship that has the form of a human. Eddie Murphy plays both Dave (the ship) and the captain of the ship. They are sent to Earth to steal our water essentially destroying our planet to save their own.The only enjoyment that I got from this film was listing in my head all the other movies it was ripping off.• A person not totally in control of his body – Liar, Liar (and for those of us over 30 All Of Me) • Main character with a tin ear toward American society – Coming To America • Incredibly tiny characters lost in our world of "giants" – Honey, I Shrunk The Kids • Eddie Murphy in space – Pluto Nash • Eddie Murphy piloting a device that he can't completely control – Best Defense • Character attempting to prove that they saw an "other worldly" creature – Splash • A cast of wacky characters piloting a human body – Everything You Always Wanted To Know About SexI'd recommend turning it into a drinking game but I fear for your safety. They even trotted out the cast lip-synching to the oldies over the closing credits. As Dave makes his way through New York City, the aliens that operate him see how wonderful humans can be and learn to give up their alien ways and become more like us. Unfortunately, "more like us" means that the "repressed black guy" became a "sassy black guy" and the "repressed gay guy" became a "sassy gay guy". Apparently there is something about our culture that brings out the stereotypes in people. There's nothing about this movie that isn't derivative of another film. It's almost as if they took the scripts from the previously mentioned films, threw them in the air and then randomly picked up pages off the floor and incorporated them into this movie. And, as if the movie wasn't already crass enough, early in the film there is a three minute product placement for Old Navy that has all the subtlety of a Ron Popiel infomercial. In the ultimate irony, the movie is co-written by Bill Corbett writer and voice of Crow T. Robot on Mystery Science Theater 3000. If that show was still on the air, he could make a good living churning out dreck like this and then making fun of it on MST3K...like a snake eating its own tail. There are other people in this film (many of them talented) but they will remain unnamed here for much the same reason that most major newspapers won't reveal the identity of rape victims. On a "Family Friendly Eddie Murphy " scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being Nutty Professor and 1 being The Adventures Of Pluto Nash, Meet Dave gets a 3.

Okay, So Now You're Trying To Say That Others Are Making Your Decisions For You?

posted on 13 Jul 2009

Why take a minute to bother with a screenplay? Or clever innovations, or even going back to the basics with that Beverly Hills Cop sequel that's been stuck in production Hades for (how long?) ever? Really, why bother, when there are scripts like THIS masterputz floating around Hollywood? The two "stolen" ideas are the small alien operating the made-to-scale human from Men In Black and Martin Short/Dennis Quaid/Meg Ryan's Inner Space from 1987.I found this to be quite dismal. The "laughs" are mere occasional chuckles, without one true belly laugh in the whole mire. And "mire" is an apt description of this muddled mess. Brian Robbins seems unsure of the desired genre of this work, jumping back and forth from satire to fifth-grade bathroom humorn.Frankly, nothing about this film works. Aside from the confused direction, Murphy see-saws between trying too hard to be funny and seemingly not trying at all, rendering the whole mess a comedic fiasco. The funny moments actually appear to be quite unintentional, and the contrived comedic elements are ... not funny. This is one big uneven nasty mess.Between the UNfunny jokes, the uneven comedic timing, and a poor contribution by Murphy, this just plain sux. It's as if Murphy is trying to tell the world that others are making these awful decisions pertaining to his work and his role choices. Sorry Eddie, but if this is all you have left to give us, you should stick to just voicing the Donkey. This quagmire rates a 3.4/10 from...the Fiend :.

I met Dave and I was glad I did.

You know, these critics need to go easy on these kinds of family movies, because the bad reviews really made me underestimate the film. But when I saw it, I really enjoyed it. For a family movie, Meet Dave is great. Although it was a bit superficial, it kept me laughing almost throughout. I don't even know why it's getting such bad reviews. I do know though that bad marketing is the main cause of the film being so unsuccessful .Meet Dave focuses on a bunch of miniature aliens who land their human-sized spaceship on earth on the lookout for their lost "orb". Eddie Murphy plays both an alien and a spaceship perfectly. Especially the first part of the film as he is getting accustomed to earth people is just hilarious. The things he does and how he does them are really funny.Usually I somewhat believe what the critics say about a movie. But this is one film that certainly made me not believe in what they say.6.8/10

Amazing

This movie is a breakthrough. It explores the notion of man and the machine with Eddie Murphy as a most excellent catalyst. Murphy not only plays as a machine.... But also as a man. Through this current issues within the realms of science and politics are addressed such as: genetic engineering, life in outer-space, and the mechanization of our society. The film explores a wide range of emotions and portrays them better than any film produced in the 21st century. This is through a new technique of using a robot shaped as an actor and placing an actor within that robot... something we can all truly relate to.All in all... excellent cast, score, special effects, cinematography, and script writing. A masterpiece.

A lot better than expected!

I am part of those people who surfed on IMDb to check the rating of this movie and was amazed to see it scoring less then a 4... Obviously this is not going to deserve an Academy Award, but still I don't get all those people who gave it a 1/10. What where they expecting from a movie with this kind of plot? On the other hand, I found the movie a LOT more entertaining than expected! I had "normal" expectations for the movie, thinking that I would have sat having a decent time for a couple of hours. Instead I found myself laughing out loud most of the time! Eddie Murphy proved to be in great shape, as just his facial expressions were enough to set the audience on fire! The movie was also carried on in a smart way, without turning boring or too obvious. This is STRONGLY suggested if you have kids!

Pluto Nash 2.

Oh where do I begin oh where do I begin after being soiled with soot from this reviled, absurd sin. Oh how can I redeem myself from the emptiness of this crap-fest extraordinaire, that imbued my heart with such despair. Oh how can I regain my state of mind from plunging into the sharp edges of a saw's grind. Oh how and when can one only see the utter mystery of this puerile farce with misguided glee; moving through the murky waters of Hollywood's polluted sea. Oh when will I finally rest from this oppression of mediocrity where the light at the end may be that of originality. Oh when thou can I find the strength to carry on thee against all of the traps of cinematic adversity.Oh when thou Murphy ever retire from the world of pretend. Oh when thou Murphy.

Don't let the critics cloud your judgement !!!

Meet Dave really ain't that bad. There are too many people out there just talking wild based on the reviews of the critics. They go see the movie with a clouded mind and don't even get to enjoy the fine things about it in the first place because they pretty much had their mind made up before even seeing it. Come on folks.. this is clearly not Eddie's best but it sure as hell ain't that bad either. I enjoyed watching it.And i'm looking forward to his next movie. I'm not gonna spoil anything so i don't want to write too much about the film but its worth watching if you're a fan of comedy.

Better than advertised

The trailers don't do this movie any justice. I saw Hellboy II, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Meet Dave, and believe me "Dave" was the best of the three. This movie would have fared better if released in February, March or October without the heavy competition form the other blockbusters. The movie's sight gags were good some of course a little silly or but others were just plain funny. The audience I saw it with thoroughly enjoyed the movie and there was plenty of laughter throughout the movie.Mini Eddie was much more looser than Spaceship Eddie. Please tel you friends to go see this before it is snatched from theaters.

Is this Batman & Robin? Then why a three for God sake?

Meet Dave is the story of a crew of miniature people inhabiting a big robot who has come to Earth on a mission to save his people. Eddie Murphy plays the Captain of the vessel and the outward version of the vessel which as automaton has limited capacity for emotion. However after he is damaged in a collision with a vehicle he decides to attempt to learn more about these earth people, spending time with Gina who ran him over and her son Josh, who worries that he isn't a hero like his late father. As you can tell from what's been written so far, this is no kitchen sink drama but a light-hearted Disney-esquire comedy.Meet Dave is a fun family film that doesn't challenge us too much and has it's heart in the right place. There is plenty of toilet humour which kids always love and some genuinely funny moments throughout, I laughed, the audience laughed. We did not pelt the screen in outrage and nor did we sit there in silence for 2 hours as we did with the film I mentioned to start with. The film is like a cross between "Galaxy Quest" and "Doctor Dolittle" and while the humour is more akin to the latter "Dolittle" this is still a fun family film. So why three or less? I think that for many film reviewers that sit through and be nice to the usual tripe that passes for entertainment over this season there has to be a villain, a film that they slate that then bombs as a result, and sadly this is that film. I also suspect that there is also an element of "compromise movie on a date" disappointment and maybe even a few "The film I wanted to see was full and I have to sit through this" resentments going on. Having seen some truly terrible mediocre films that critics rave about like "Charlie's Angels" and "Forty days and forty nights" these films that no critic has the b*lls to slag off for fear they won't be invited to more screenings, well boo hoo! I have no cross to bear in that department and this is a film that is funny when it wants to be, it means well, and, whilst it is a tad predictable, the same age group of kids that liked "Dr Dolittle" will certainly like this, especially appropriate for younger children who may find "WALL-E" hard going, bearing in mind it is great for adults and older children, but not necessarily very young kids. PCritics are just jumping on the bandwagon to attack this film, it really isn't as bad as the examples I've mentioned. The only drawback in this film is that the effects aren't particularly great at a number of points but better to have a film that's okay with poor effects than poor with okay effects. If your family enjoyed Firehouse Dog, and the silly humour of that, chances are they'll like this.Family Fun

I don't care what you think, Meet Dave makes up for Eddies ordinary performance in Norbit.

posted on 16 May 2009

Meet Dave was a witty comedy-science fiction, that made me crack up laughing a lot. I don't want to go into talking about the plot, but it was better then Norbit and a lot of other crap that's coming out of Hollywood nowadays. This had jokes for adults and kids alike. Some parts were a little too much made for 6 years old, but that was to have more of a family film feel to it.On the part of Eddie, he does well in this film, especially since his career has been going slightly downhill this century (Although some of his best films have come from this century (Bowfinger, Shrek), but this one must definitely be classified as one of his best.Overall, this film is a good laugh for a family and anyone including teens will enjoy this film. I rate this film 73%.

another good comedy for the whole family

I must say that when i first heard of this movie it seemed a bit silly and maybe not worth watching, but i must confess that its not at all that way.Its an above average comedy that u can enjoy with family,friends,girlfriend/boyfriend,etc.Basically its a movie for anyone to enjoy. The movie has an original script like no other movie i've seen. We have Eddie Murphy playing double role once again and doing it very well.Once again his talent in acting gives value to the whole movie. The movie is also unpredictable, its a bit dramatic also and has some twists and turns.I strongly recommend this movie,it will make your day brighter. Y'all take care!God bless!

The Beano - on the big screen!

posted on 08 May 2009

UK readers of the Beano comic will instantly recognise the Numskulls and will, of course, see this film as totally plausible. Harry Harrison also wrote a series of SF stories about starship troopers fighting tiny extra-terrestrial lizards who used the same cunning ploy. There were a few plot-holes such as sometimes when Dave shook his head it affected the inhabitants and sometimes it did not. This occasionally made me think that this could be fantasy.*****End of Spoiler****I thought it was really funny and well acted. Like a combination of Galaxy Quest and Toy Story. The ending was a bit saccharin but it is common with most films to have a weak ending - or perhaps it always seems that way when you are enjoying the story. It mixes a little violent horror in with the comedy which is a shocking contrast that I always like. (Like when the early prototype of Robocop runs amok.) Very enjoyable for kids and adults.

Why the low reviews!?

posted on 06 May 2009

Why the low reviews!? I almost didn't see this film but I'm glad I did. This movie has great acting sequences and ties in science fiction, social behavior and humor in very nicely. This film takes a third person look at our current pop culture and what we as a society have become. I found myself laughing out loud more than once and wondered why this film got such bad reviews. I suppose with most films using shock factors in both humor and action this film may come off as more of a storybook style. For those of you who are looking for a feel good comedy that holds some interesting perspectives you will enjoy it. I would recommend this picture to any one.
