My Tree

posted on 26 May 2008

This movie has a lot of good performances, especially by the actors. I have to admit that this movie has special meaning for me, however, because of Rodney Dangerfield. In my front yard I have a tree that looks EXACTLY like Rodney Dangerfield, I mean EXACTLY. Just the other day a motorist driving by yelled "Hey, your tree looks like Rodney Dangerfield!" I'm hoping to put up a website with a picture of this tree soon so keep your eyes peeled.

Also, be warned: this DVD is in the overrated widescreen format. I was one of the very few supporters of the tallscreen format that enjoyed a mild popularity in mid-late April 1996 (only 3 films were shot in this unusual aspect ratio-"The Tall Guy," "Tall Marge," and "Big & Tall"). Needless to say, on my Tall-Screen Television set (60 inches high by 5 inches wide), I have to put up with enormous black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

Nonetheless, this movie tells a great story. I would recommend ordering this item from Amazon (at least for us fat cats who own mailboxes).

A Laughing Good Film

I never thought "Meet Wally Sparks" would turn out to be this good of a film. I didn't seem interested at all when it came out in theaters or on video. But one day when I got bored and decided to turn on the tv, there it was on PAY-PER-VIEW. I chose to watch it, since I have nothing better to do, and got so attached. It was one laughing good film!!! When Wally Sparks (Rodney Dangerfield) begins receiving complaints from the FCC and millions of other people because of the antics he performs on his access show, the network president (Burt Reynolds) gives him one last chance to shape up or else the show would be cancelled. With that chance, Wally decides to do an interview with the Governor of Georgia so people will think he is more conservative and to promote his "new" Wally Sparks Show. With the help of his tv producer (Debi Mazar), Wally ends up at a political party held at the Governor's mansion where he uncovers a scandal that is going on. A great comedy, packed with tons of laughs and cameo appearences. That's why I give "Meet Wally Sparks" an 8 out of 10 stars.

Worst Rodney film EVER!!!!

I think the title says it all here, I could be the biggest fan of Rodney there is and I couldnt stomach this film. Gouge your eyes out before you watch it!!!

[Three out of Four] Raunchy at times, but Rodney's third best film

Real good performances from Dangerfield,
Reynolds, Ogden Stiers, et, al. Some of
Rodney's obvious right wing views come
through (For more of this, go to the
scene in Back to School when he and

History Teacher, the late Sam Kineson
have there exchange about the p****y
wimp Truman who wouldn't let Mac Arthur
'go in there and blow them Commie Bas****ds
out!" Now that's what I'm talkin' about!
Here, Reynolds plays Rodney's Producer;
Rodney is obnoxious talk show host who's
rating are dropping - his main target is
Ogden Stiers who plays Southern Governor.
If you haven't been brainwashed by 'Poli-
tical Stupidity', then you will almost die
laughing wacthing Rodney ride a DRUNK
Horse through a ballroom, with a drink
in one hand and a Confederate Battle Flag

Run from Wally Sparks as fast as you can (1997)

I'm not a movie snob. There's many movies I found funny or interesting that most viewers would find terrible. I'm also a huge fan of 80's comedies. There's usually two types of movies that I enjoy watching. The first type is intelligent and creative movies, and the second type is silly, "guilty pleasure" type movies. But this.. THIS..This definitely wasn't a guilty pleasure. "Meet Wally Sparks" is one of the most stupid movies I've ever seen and relies on sexual humor all the time to make their viewers laugh. A very rude talk show host has to save his reputation. This could have been funny. This could have made fun of all the terrible talk shows that are out there. But it wasn't funny at all in my opinion. The movie lost it's credibility to me right from the beginning when REAL talk show hosts gave their opinions about Wally Sparks.Okay, if you're with a group of friends and you're all really tired, you might laugh at certain parts of the film. However, when I DID laugh, it was at the stupidity of the movie and not at their attempts at humor. The worst thing is when you realize it was made in 1997 when so many other better comedies were made before. Not only it wasn't funny, it was just pointless. I had a hard time following what was going on because it was just so badly done. I'm aware that very few people are actually going to rent this movie, but if you're someone like me who randomly picks movies at the video rental place, I only have one advice; avoid this one. Some people might find it amusing, but probably not more than that..

'Meet Wally Sparks' (Lion Gate) Running time: 105 minutes

In my humble opinion, an excellent off-the-wall outrageously funny movie about an all-too zany talk show host Wally Sparks (Rodney Dangerfield). One thing I liked about this flick was that every character had their share of good lines. Things go nuts when Sparks rides into the Governor's mansion riding a horse - then gets injured, having to recover in a guest room at the mansion. Then, everything really gets out of hand when the 'Wally Sparks Show' gets broadcasted from the mansion as the whole place gets transformed into a media circus. Couple of the others that have a vital role that show up here are Wally's sexy assistant Sandy Gallo (Debi Mazar), Governor Floyd Preston (David Ogden Stiers) - his wife Emily (Cindy Williams, still cute after all these years following Laverne & Shirley) and the deceiving porn actress Lola Laura (Cindy Ambuehl). Mama-mia! They rarely come along any hotter than this one. Highly recommended.

Disappointing

MEET WALLY SPARKS, a disappointing comedy, features an excellent performance from David Ogden Stiers, playing a decent politician whose life is turned upsidedown by a trash talk show host (Rodney). Stiers makes you care about what's happening to him, a good family man who didn't ask for trouble. The rest of MEET WALLY SPARKS is leagues below the level of Stier's performance; it's as if the actor's part was edited in from a different film. As for Rodney, he delivers a number of funny one-liners, but that number isn't high enough to make MEET WALLY SPARKS memorable.

i thought it was a funny movie, and a few scenes were very funny. it's never boring or stupid. there are a few,and i do mean few scenes that are unfunny, but not stupid. the plot holes are the only thing that keeps this movie from a bulls-eye,but it still has a number of laughs. i give meet wally sparks **1/2 out of ****

It's not "Back to School" or "Caddyshack", but it will work

posted on 18 Jun 2006

This movie is not quite as good as Caddyshack or Back To School, but it's still pretty funny... at least as funny as Easy Money. Something you have to know going into a Rodney Dangerfield movie is that you cannot expect the most cerebral movie you've ever seen. With that in mind, if you are looking for a Rodney Dangerfield movie where he does the whole silly one-liner thing, and you've already seen the other 3 movies I've mentioned then this movie will hit the spot.

Cool, but too many stereotypes

This film was good fun, and Rodney as always stole the show. Unfortunately, with the jokes it seemed when it rained it poured, though when it didn't, there was a drought. Some of the film - the beggining few scenes, the shows all through the film & some various little bits like the wedding were great & really funny, mainly thanks to Rodney, but it seemed they just didn't think when they cast of something 'cause some of the actors JUST DIDN'T suit their roles. Burt Reynolds must have done this to stay out of the red 'cause the role REALLY wasn't him & the stooge guy who worked for him also was terrible in his part. I was cringing through some of their scenes. This film has enough funny scenes in it to last on you, & a couple of great scenes which remind you why Rodney Dangerfield is your favourite comedien - In particular 'but wait... there's even more!' Unfortunately, it just doesn't quite gel. You need a couple of beers with it, & then it's just great :)

Shtick Sticks!

This movie only works 'cause it's Rodney Dangerfield. He has some bizzarely hilarious on screen presence that really gets me. His movie aren't classics, but they're really good for some belly laughs. I wish we could give half marks, because Wally deserves that EXTRA half of a star for it sex filled toilet humor that works every time. I wouldn't suggest buying it, for how many times can you watch Wally getting his nuts bitten by a squirl (don't answer that!)? But if your in the mood for crude mindless hilarity, Wally truely does 'spark', but sorry, no fireworks here.

Some laughs, but not enough

posted on 22 Dec 2005

A lot of energy was put into this movie. Dangerfield has some funny one-liners, but a lot of them are not funny, or you'll guess before he utters them. The plot is alternately meandering or frozen for long periods of time. (And the plot should have stayed at the talk show subject, not some dumb plot about Dangerfield crashing a govenor's pad.) Replay the climatic interview scene after watching it once - you'll see that some of Dangerfield's actions don't make that much sense. Also, see how many times the director shoots Dangerfield from the neck down - obviously, it's a stunt double.A memo to Burt Reynolds: don't wear that particular toupee again.

A ripe target (daytime talk shows) gets off easy....

posted on 30 Aug 2005

Nothing in this world needs a hard-hitting satire like daytime talk shows. Unfortunately, this movie only spends a few minutes in the realm of 'Jerry Springer', and instead centers on some idiotic plot involving Dangerfield and some buffoonish governor. Rodney has a number of funny lines (about four), but his energy goes to waste..... this movie is dull, plodding, stupid, and a complete waste of a chance to kick daytime talk shows in the ribs. I'm pretty sure that no good movie has ever been made that has featured Morton Downey, Jr.

Dangerfield's over the top best film comedies yet!

This time Rodney Dangerfield plays a trashy television gossip talk show host personality named Wally Sparks who gets some hot juicy scandal tabloid with a southern political governor who thinks an affair is going with his campaign manager in this dispute. My favorite scene stealer is when Dangerfield's dancing with the polticans wife and carries a broken statues missing penis in his front pants. Which I find so hilarious and still cracks me up in every part of this raunchy farce here.Like Rodney says "I Get No Respect At All!".

Entertaining film given the circumstances

posted on 29 Apr 2005

Meet Wally Sparks, if not taken seriously in any context, is an entertaining film. It is full of Rodney Dangerfield's crude humor and funny one-liners. The supporting cast does their job adequately with the exception of Burt Reynolds. He seems really out of place in this movie. Like others who have commented, I can only assume he wanted to pay some bills or perhaps owed Rodney Dangerfield a favor. The plot is quite simple, but what can one expect from a movie starring Rodney Dangerfield? If you have a warped or crude sense of humor, you will likely find this an entertaining film that serves to pass the time on a rainy afternoon. If you have any reservations about the crude humor, skip it.

Sparks big laughs by the minute!

Rodney said, promoting his movie, when people write movies they think they're writing "Gone with the Wind." This movie is FAR from "Gone with the Wind," but if you're as much as a fan of Rodney as I am--and who doesn't love him?--you will have a great time! I can't understand why this movie didn't fare well at the box office. When I went to see it, there were only a few people, but the few that were in there were laughing hysterically! I saw it twice in theaters, and the second audience was doing the same!
Especially the statue-penis scene. I think that has to one of the funniest moments ever captured on film and that really brought the house down! Of course, expect to see a chock full of Rodney one-liners, including: "We now come to a part of the show called 'It's Hard to Believe.' Or as my wife used to say..."I can't believe it's hard" and "The problem with me is I'm sitting on top of the world, and I've got hemmerhoids!" I'm not going to give away the rest of the lines, because that would be sinful. The gags are absolutely priceless! Sure, this is another outrageous comedy with the plot structure of a TV sitcom, but with Rodney in the front seat--How can you possibly go wrong? Also, keep your eye out for cameos by numerous talk show hosts and a special appearance by Burt Reynolds in one of his worst wigs...LOL.My score: 8 (out of 10)

Hey last night I met a girl she was so wild! How wild was she! She was so wild I gave her a virgin wool sweater...her body rejected it! This and many other comical pieces in MEET WALLY SPARKS make it a well-rounded film. Cameos by such famous people as Ron Jeremy and Tony Danza (playing a Taxi driver) make this film a must-see.

A line in the scene with Tony when Wally gets in his cab: Tony: Hey wait till I tell the boys I had you in my cab! Wally: Hey Tony first of all you never had me, and if you did have me it wouldn't be in a cab. Tony: Oh it kills me it kills me

at least its adult satire

When i first saw this movie at the theater, i didnt care for it. but after i saw it on video it seemed funnier to me, and i realized its got its moments. Rodney is always a barrel of laughs, no matter what the critics say.

Live-action cartoon, but what's wrong with that?

posted on 13 Feb 2004

"Meet Wally Sparks" is a screwball comedy in the vein of an Adam Sandler vehicle or latter-day "National Lampoon" movie. Sure, it's dumb. Sure, it's cheap. Sure, there's no Palm D'Or award sitting on the director's shelf. But some movies are not destined for accolades or AFI lists or anything above the $8.99-and-under used video rack at Blockbuster. This movie has a drunken horse, three Southern ladies (one of them Cindy Williams) dancing in their skivvies to "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On", a fight between Sumo wrestlers and WWF stars, and Tony Danza reprising his role as Tony from "Taxi" doing a Rodney Dangerfield impression. Oh, and lest it be overlooked, RODNEY FRIGGIN' DANGERFIELD.Come on. It's goofy, it's fun, it doesn't cost more than the price of a pack of cigarettes to own. Rodney and Oscar may not mix, but live-action cartoons and Rodney go pretty well together.
