Bad

posted on 03 Apr 2009

I've watched most of Segal's films, and I own several as well. But this film is one of the worst films I've seen in the last ten years. Excepting for a chance to look at Jacqueline Lord (a Catherine Zeta Jones look, act, and dress alike) for a little while, and her acting wasn't very good most of the time, there are no redeeming aspects to this film.

For a film in the action genre, it consists of ALL bad elements. The plot actually had potential, except the dialog is on the level of a bad High School film. Segal is so over-weight that you can tell he's struggling to do even the most basic martial arts sequences. Unless he can lose weight and get into shape, this is the last film of his I'll spend any time watching.

Unfortunately, the sets, the action, the dialog, the acting, the directing, and so forth, are all between the D+ to C levels of quality.

I'd rather have seen a corny Kung Fu movie. At least there would have been some excuse for so many bad elements in one film.

Avoid this film totally.

Lousy Piece of Trash!!

This movie isn't bad if your comparing it to Wesley Snipes' DTV movie The Detonator. They both score about a 1 out of 10. This movie is absolutely awful!! The plot...there isn't one, not that I could find anyway. If you watch this, DON'T RENT, and find a plot please let me know what it is because while watching the 84 minutes of this trash, in between the horrible acting and watching Seagal being out of breath, I couldn't find one.Now lets talk about the scenes a little. Seagal (John Seeger, who's the genius who came up with that one) in one scene goes to "punch" someone in the bathroom and you can see obviously that he doesn't, I mean the guy he's trying to hit isn't even in the picture, and there's a punching sound. Where's the editing director?!?! Must have been cut to pay for Seagal's drinking/smoking habit. Anyway, another one is the same scene Seagal is throws this guy into a stall in the men's bathroom and knocks the stall off the wall and no water comes splashing out. There's not even a hole in the wall where the pipe goes. I guess Seagal didn't want to get wet or the floor because his fat a$$ may have fallen down and not gotten back up. There are many others but I just keep getting more and more mad the more I think about how awful this crap was. Seagal is supposed to be some bad-a$$ mercenary but he can't even talk without being out of breath. I just couldn't accept the fact that he's supposed to be some mercenary. And speaking of mercenaries, who has ever heard of a "Good" mercenary. That's like saying a good murderer. They just don't go together. Terrible, simply terrible.Don't rent don't even give it the benefit of the doubt and certainly don't contribute to Seagal's drinking/smoking habit.

Confused and careless

"Mercenary For Justice": a confused mixture of a bit of warfare in the "Black Hawk Down" vein, a bank robbery, a prison break and a mission to save an abducted mother and her little son. In between all the bullets flying around, you hardly get to know the characters, and thus you don't really care about any of them. I liked most of Seagal's recent movies such as "The Foreigner" or "Out For A Kill" (and many who watched those don't agree with me). However, "Mercenary of Justice" was the weakest among those I've watched. Seagal defeats bad guys without wasting any blood, sweat or tears. It's all coming too easy to be exciting. The two only good points were some camera work (many shots were hand-held, looks more realistic than nice crane moves) and beautiful Jacqueline Lord who bears a strong resemblance with Catherine Zeta-Jones and plays her role convincingly no matter if she is at a dinner party or a battle.

Another terrible low budget Seagal effort, will he ever make a decent flick again?

Mercenary for Justice starts as corrupt CIA agent John Dresham (Luke Goss) & all round bad guy Anthony Chapel (Roger Guenveur Smith) arrange the kidnapping of the French Ambassador in a remote African island using hard as nails Gulf war veteran John Seeger (co-executive producer & uncredited co-writer Steven Seagal) & some of his mates as cover, plausible deniability & all that apparently. John isn't happy when he learns the truth & is even less happy when his best mate Radio Jones (Zaa Nkweta) is killed during the fighting. Back in the US & John promises to look after Radio's widow Shondra (Faye Peters) & young son Eddie (Tumi Mogoje) but Chapel is hired by billionaire Greek Arab arms dealer Ahmet Dasan (Peter Butler) to break is son out of prison & kidnaps both Shondra & Eddie in order to force Seeger to carry out the break. Seeger isn't happy & his mood doesn't improve & sets out to gain revenge on those who double crossed him & are threatening the lives of his friends family...This Arubian, American & South African co-production was directed by Don E. FauntLeRoy who is also credited as cinematographer Mercenary for Justice was the second of three awful straight-to-video/DVD action flicks he made with Seagal (the other's being Today You Die (2005) & Urban Justice (2007) which are just as bad) & at this stage I seriously doubt whether Seagal will ever make a decent action film again, entertaining action fare such as Hard to Kill (1990), Marked for Death (1990), Out for Justice (1991) & the two Under Siege (1992, 1995) films seem a distant memory from a very long time ago. One of the main problems with Mercenary for Justice in my opinion is that it's insanely complicated & tries to be too clever, there are all sorts of vague double crosses & ulterior motives & supposed twists & turns that are just so contrived & convoluted that they make little sense & are so badly written & presented end up making the whole film feel like a complete unfocused mess. No-ones motives are ever fully revealed, I still don't really know what that CIA guy played by Luke Goss is all about, why were Seagal & his men fighting at the start, who was Chapel & why did he hire people he couldn't control & the whole thing is just a mess that jumps around from scene to scene trying to be clever but it's so poorly put together it's annoyingly confusing. Even though it only lasts for about an hour & a half it feels much, much longer which is never a good sign, the dialogue is terrible, the character's are not fleshed out & their motives are never made clear & there isn't even much action in it which is the final nail in it's coffin really as far as I am concerned. These days Seagal is fat, you can see it & he's out of shape & not that menacing & he looks sluggish, slow & unconvincing in the action scenes. There are one or two fights which are quite violent but for the most part he leaves the action to other people & is it any coincidence that one of the other main character's is fatter than he is? I am sure that guy Bulldog is there to make sure Seagal isn't the fattest person on screen during the action! During the old days Seagal's action scenes were based around brutal martial arts violence & amusing one-liners, these days he can barely walk yet alone pull those moves off. There are a few explosions, a few shoot-outs & some fights but nothing special or that memorable.According to the IMDb this had a budget of about $15,000,000 which I don't believe for a second, there is no way this cheap looking film cost that much. Apparently shot in Bulgaria & South Africa. The acting sucks, Seagal minus pony tail mumbles his way through the film as usual while Luke Goss has managed to put this turkey behind him having appeared in the recent Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008).Mercenary for Justice is another terrible low budget shot in Eastern Europe action flick with Seagal who really should either lose some weight or call it a day & realise that he can't make these action films anymore. Not good.

More garbage from Seagal

I really loved his movies. Back when there was actually a budget of more than six figures. I have tried to stay a true fan, and have watched all his films. Now they are coming out every 60-90 days and they are trash. He is nothing but a ghost of his former self. Direction stinks, production quality stinks, plot stinks. I'm sad he can't get a film done in the US anymore, with a major studio. Where have all our action actors gone? They are all retired or making third rate direct to DVD trash like this. I'm finished. I can't take it anymore. I thought Submerged was it for me, but I kept coming back....hoping. Seagal has another movie coming out in a month or two (Romania again, ugh). It'll be the first I ever missed. Bye Steven, and good luck.

Slick garbage

posted on 24 Sep 2008

"Mercenary for Justice" is garbage. Sure, it looks slick, with above-average (by DTV standards) production values, international locations, and some great stunts. But don't let the looks fool you. The story makes no sense whatsoever from beginning to end, and Seagal's ego-feeding is in full-force here (he is introduced as "the most decorated soldier in Gulf War I" - apparently he wouldn't even settle for "second most decorated" - and, of course, nobody can land a single tiny hit on him in a fight, despite the fact that these days he has to send his stunt double to climb over a 10-foot wall). The viewer has no idea what is going on or why, and in a turn of events that shows just how utterly moronic this script is, Seagal and his female partner Jacqueline Lord kill several perfectly innocent Cape Town cops and security people who were just trying to protect the bank that these two were (inexplicably) robbing, yet the film apparently expects us to continue regarding them as the good guys (!!!), because they are trying to save a black kid and his mother. What the hell? Oh, and why does that kick-ass muscular and deadly female mercenary we see in the opening sequence get killed off so quickly? At least SHE could climb over a wall. (*1/2)

What a horrible piece of dreck. The plot is non-existing, the actors are stupid lame and incoherent (as was the non-existing plot), the camera-work something my little sister could pull off, the dude who seeger recruiters has got to be the MOST annoying person _EVER_. I couldn't stop thinking about smacking him in the face every time he opened his mouth. Apart from that he overacts when the dude can't even act, he pronounces every sentence with incredible agony, thinking it probably raises his 'acting' skills to a higher plane and makes him look even a more bad guy. IT IS HORRIBLE.The main actor has gotten even fatter then previously, and now takes about 2/3 of my widescreen TV. What a waste of perfectly good film and time of my life. Seriously though, i you know what the film is about please tell me. I would like to know. Because the movie sure didn't!

Let's give Segal a mulligan on producing this one. He was distracted by the on-set buffet!

posted on 08 Aug 2008

We, Sid the Elf, are worried that Steven Segal, the early favorite for a 2008 woody, will take a reduced acting role in the new B he's now producing. Don't do it Segal! Sid needs you in Unintentional Comedies like fans of your smooth ballads need you to keep pumping out albums. Yeah, albums. Segal actually took time away from his lucrative film and competitive eating careers to make sweet sweet baby-making music.

This is why Mercenary for Justice fell short of Sid's lofty expectations for a Segal flick. He just wasn't in it enough. This movie had a killer ending, which was the only part of the plot that revolved around Segal, of course that might be because the man has his own gravitational pull at this point. There is one point when they show him from a profile view in a suit. He has a distinctly white Biggie Smalls on the cover of Life After Death vibe. Which brings up another point. Since when did Segal start talking like he's black? I guess all those years of working with illustrious actors such as Treach, DMX, and Ja Rule have taken their toll on our favorite portly-size action star. Segal is like aging adult-film star at this point. The camera angle has to be perfect, and the action better be sped up to keep the viewer um...interested. Like we said in our Urban Justice review they need to do some very fancy camera work to make a 285 pound senior appear to be moving quickly.

So, Sid's final thoughts: this is a movie that makes no sense whatsoever. But, if you're looking for a movie to pop in and get some unintentional comedy laughs at, look no further than Mercenary for Justice; starring Steven Segal, his huge pot belly, and his Michael Myers wig.

"Justice" Was Not Served

posted on 21 Mar 2008

"Mercenary for Justice" has a lot of things going for it: it skips the more obvious production snafus of Steven Seagal's DTV exploits, has a pretty good supporting cast to show up the star, and has an overall tone of wanting to succeed - more so than the tired, voiced-over attempts that bookend it ("Attack Force" , "Black Dawn" ). On the other hand, the film suffers from a lack of focus that eventually disintegrates a promising story into little more than a wannabe-smart-but-actually-dumb vehicle for Seagal, and makes the movie's unsatisfying action content painfully clear.

The story's a bit of a doozy, but here goes: John Seeger (Seagal) is an ex-military mercenary who's strong-armed into a controversial mission by threats to the lives of his deceased best friend's family. Ordered to join a team of guns-for-hire to break a rich arms-dealer's son out of prison, Seeger is double-crossed when his bosses reveal their ulterior motive - prompting Seeger to fight back in his own way.

The film's first 20 minutes are its highlight: the massive, " Black Hawk Down" -inspired shootout is probably the most professional-looking scene that's ever been featured in Seagal's DTV career, and is definitely something I had never seen him involved in before. It's extremely well done for this kind of movie, and effectively starts it off with promise.
Sadly, the action takes a turn for the mundane, and we're left with a remaining 70 minutes of repetitive shootouts, throat-slitting, and a sloppy hand-to-hand fight scene in a bathroom. While the gunplay remains decent, the fact that the majority of the casualties counted by Seagal are police officers, prison guards, security personnel, and various other non-bad guys puts a bit of a disappointing dent in the "Justice" part of the title. Seagal is supposed to be a good guy!

As for the acting, it's a bit of a hit & miss: without mentioning mumbly Seagal, there's Luke Goss ("Hellboy 2" ), Roger Guenveur Smith ("Justice"), Michael Williams ("The Wire"), Adrian Galley ("The Deal"), and Langley Kirkwood ("Final Solution") getting a piece of the action, and they all generally do well with their roles. Still, you can't help but wonder whether a talent like Goss was miscast as a pathetic CIA producer when he's capable of kicking butt in his other movies...

What really brings the film down, however, is the plot's overcomplication: while it kind of makes sense when you think about it after the film has ended, trying to understand the motives, relationships between the characters, and exactly who's doing what is a real chore whilst watching. For example, when Seagal begins to get a few up on his adversaries, you don't know at once that he's doing it because there's no explanation to the villains' misfortunes until five minutes later. This happens more than once, and kills the satisfaction of watching the evildoers get theirs - a plot tool that's one of the few things that Seagal is really good at.

In all, I'm not surprised that Seagal and director Don FauntLeRoy pulled off "Urban Justice" as their next attempt, for "Mercenary for Justice" showed a lot of promise. Alas, that's all it really is - promises that aren't fulfilled. I wish very much that a different writer had been hired - I have no doubt that the plot could've been delivered better by somebody who had done more than work on short films before he undertook a full-length feature. For what it's worth, this one's staying on my shelf...but it doesn't stand a good chance of overtaking any other film up there anytime soon.

Oh my God! Its Robert Loggia! Or not...

I will have to view this film again to see how the story really comes across. Because it sure was a mess to follow throughout the entire movie. However its Seagal, and Seagal films are never much for great stories. Some of them have been OK, but not great.Seagal, the action star that would be mistaken for a less fat John Goodman, is hired by a billionaire to kidnap a French embassy official. Then he get betrayed by somebody in the CIA, co-operating with arms dealers. His friend is killed and the widow is kidnapped to force Seagal's hand. So chubby Seagal gets off his butt and fights. The story is convoluted and mixed up. Sometimes Segal comes across with a good voice, then he reverts to his 'whisper speak' and you have to turn up the volume to hear him. (That was a huge problem if you have ever watched "Flight of Fury (2007)").Overall, the acting is decent, the story almost un-followable, and the action is good. Seagal gets to go his 'karate chop' and break urinals. So it was entertaining. Worth a look. "B-"

As good as Seagal's DVD films are ever going to get, I'd imagine

STAR RATING: ***** Jodie Marsh **** Michelle Marsh *** Kym Marsh ** Rodney Marsh * Hackney Marsh John Seeger (Steven Seagal) and his team are involved in a shoot-out in a war ravaged area of a foreign land, and have been left out to dry by the CIA. During the shoot-out, Seeger's best friend rather stupidly stands and shouts while war is raging all around him and is unsurprisingly blasted to death. Suddenly a helicopter lands to take them all to safety, but space on the chopper is filling up. Seeger, however, will not leave his best friend's body behind and packs it on board with them so he can take it home and give him a decent burial (surprisingly, they don't buckle under his weight alone and crash.) Shortly after, he returns home to comfort his friend's family, only to learn soon after that the same corrupt faction of the CIA that left him out to dry before has now kidnapped his friend's family and that their safe return is dependent upon Seeger leading another group of mercenaries into one of the most well-guarded prisons in Eastern Europe and freeing the son of one of the most notorious arms dealers in the world today. But Seeger is no amateur and has a few tricks up his own sleeve in what becomes a deadly game of cat and mouse. So it seems we're back to the lazy titles with new Seagal movies game. We've had Out for a Kill which was a blatantly obvious chop and change of Out for Justice and Hard to Kill. Now we have Mercenary for Justice, which I believe was originally just going to be called Mercenary but then had for Justice added on the end of it. Bad idea, as the tacky look doesn't go unnoticed. Another thing I've finally realized from watching the DVD extras on this film is that Seagal obviously doesn't like doing interviews that much, adding as little of his own input as possible and sounding rather brash and irritated whilst doing it. I've heard stories in the past about his attitude to this aspect of being a famous person but the penny really clicked here...As for the quality of the film itself, you'll see worse Seagal films. There's a fairly intricate and engaging story, some nice aerial photography of Cape Town, Africa (amongst other places) and some enjoyable (if forgettable) action. And, maybe I'm just seeing things, but when Seagal's buddy is killed at the beginning of the film, was he not on the verge of tears? Did he appear a little choked up? Was that the closest thing to emotive, uninhibited acting I've ever seen from him? Could this be the start of a new, more emotive Seagal? If it is, I don't know what I'll think. But I didn't see anything that would make me want to watch it again. I dunno. How much more of my money am I going to waste on these low rent made for video Seagal films before Under Siege 3 comes out and he gets back in the cinema again? He made...no wait, I've just thought about it and I can honestly say there wasn't a single film Seagal made that went to theatres that I didn't enjoy. It was when he became a video star that the quality of his films went downhill. Seagal belongs in the cinema. Until then, though, I'll stick with him. Wherever that may take me. **

Seagal fans rejoice? Ahhh, not quite, but a step in the right direction…

posted on 19 Feb 2008

If you've kept up with Seagal's direct-to-video career (as I diligently have) "Mercenary for Justice" is certainly a step in the right direction. No, it's not great movie, but it's a whole lot better than most of his previous direct-to-video efforts. First and foremost the cinematography is really well done. This movie looks great and feels "bigger" than most of Seagal's previous direct to video movies. Second, although there's more gun-play than Aikido, Seagal performs in all his own action sequences (no stunt/body doubles) and the fight choreography is relatively classic Seagal (arm and wrist twisting / body tossing). Third, Seagal's voice doesn't appear to be dubbed at any point during the movie (as it's been in several of his other releases). What's bad is the usual: muddled story, poor supporting cast, some of the dialogue. The first 20 minutes of the movie lack a real cohesive setup / story (in fact, beside a brief freeze frame / still, Seagal doesn't appear for the first 11 minutes or so). The opening also suffers from the classic low budget, "shooting a stunt from multiple angles – then intermittently cutting those different shots of the same stunt into the movie trying to sell it as a new event each time" trick. Oh well. Bottom line: If you've kept up with Seagal this far in his career you won't be disappointed with "Mercenary for Justice." What junk

I was confused when I ran across this on the hotel TV (with no guide screen on the cable). Steven was looking a little older, so it had to be recent, but the cars belonging to these allegedly super-rich villains were all 10-20 years old, so what the heck was it? This came out in 2006? No way. Big budget there -- just scan the local classifieds for $2500 cars. Even TV shows don't stoop that low.I guess that doesn't have much to do with the movie, except this level of quality and attention to detail carries over to the script, acting, everything. You notice things like this when there are no interesting characters to follow, no coherent plot, and the dialog hurts your ears. There is nothing of merit in this movie. Seagal should cut his losses and go do commercials -- they would offer him more dignity. I hope they let him keep one of those 1988 Benzes.

One of the better Seagal films of recent years...

"Mercenary for Justice" has one heck of an opening. It starts on a war-torn battlefield with Seagal and a group of mercenaries fighting a legion of French soldiers after having kidnapped and killed the French ambassador. Director Don E. FauntLeRoy, who did the so-so "Today You Die" with Seagal, proves his worth with this sequence as the action is fluid and crisp and looks like it cost way more than the reported $15 million it actually did. It's clear with this film's opening: Seagal is hearing the fan's pleas for better films, and he's going to start trying better. Another thankful gesture to his loyal fans in this film is Seagal actually does his own fighting, and while the fight scenes are less impressive, at least it's him doing it. The plot is ridiculous and silly and most of it doesn't make a lick of sense, but since when did it have to in a Seagal movie? What matters is that the film looks good and makes Seagal look good. Having been a Seagal fan for a while, I must say I was pleased by this film.

I am not sure why everyone is ripping this movie apart. In its own class (other Mid to Lower Budget Direct to Video) this movie ranks as one of the best. Seagal's best effort since "Into the Sun" (after such disasters as "The Foreigner" and "Out For A Kill") Seagal fans should be happy. Good action sequences, Bad Dialogue, and lots of violence...What else are people expecting? Snow Falling on Cedars? The fight sequences are actually Seagal instead of some obvious stunt double, and the one-liners are better. Decent action flick.

A Good Step Forward For Steven Seagal

posted on 07 Dec 2007

In Mercenary For Justice Steven Seagal is turning away from his recent Direct-To-DVD releases and opening with a great 'war' scene one that comes close to "Saving Private Ryan". Steven also his hearing his fan base and decided to do his own fights scenes, also at the end he gets back to his 'movie' roots when he goes after the man who set him up in the beginning. The way does it reminds me of his movies "Hard to Kill" and "Out For Justice". Steven is making an honest effort to improve and the way he acts in his movies. If he continues he will reach the stardom he had in the early 1990's and maybe in the future he will go beyond in his stardom we just have to keep him informed so that he may continue to improve.

Seagal was back in action last time, and has stayed there

The theatrical release is no longer the benchmark for success for an actor since fewer people see films in theatres and many rather "big" names are now making DTV films: IE. Hillary Swank, Chuck Norris, Demi Moore etc. They are just beginning to find out what Seagal has known for quite a while. The issue was that some, not all, of Seagal's DTV films were lacking in quality, and perhaps only worthy of a DTV release. However, "Black Dawn" was a production that changed that poor quality trend, and "Mercenary" proves to be an even better follow up than "Dawn." Seagal's critics might as well be shoveling smoke if they continue on with the tired redundant insults now, because he is obviously having the last laugh, with a vengeance. Like "Dawn", this film has good production, but unlike "Dawn", and fortunately, this film has a lot of hand to hand combat with no doubles, no dubbing, sleek production, an intricate plot, cool locations, etc. Note: This is hands down the most violent of Seagal's films, with an exhausting body count, but the core of it has a redemptive story which I am sure Seagal would not have any other way. He could do better, but he could also do a lot worse. If he keeps going in this direction, then this Icon has a lot of fight left in him.

A Big Improvement

posted on 21 Nov 2007

Steven Seagal has come out with an array of DTV titles since 2003's The Foreigner and none since then have been very successful in winning over many action fans. As a hardcore fan, I personally have been mildly disappointed in Steve's stuff of late (mainly Out Of Reach, Submerged and Black Dawn) due to uses of voice dubbing, fight doubles and very flat plots, which is why Mercenary For Justice is an exception. The plot is very simple: group of mercenaries are betrayed on a mission by their boss, mercenaries are then blackmailed into taking another mission, mercenaries get mad, mercenaries get even. What separates MFJ from Seagal's last couple is the obviously improved production values, the opening battle sequence looks almost as good as your average war film (not forgetting the uncanny over the top ability of all protagonists to hit their targets with extreme precision). Seagal doesn't appear to be dubbed and performs 95% of his own stunts and fights, which is a breath of fresh air for this fan (and for most I would imagine). He looks like he's having fun with this movie and works well with his supporting actors. A very big mention must go to Roger Guenveur Smith who plays Chapel, his character is so ridiculously over the top that its almost impossible not to like him.All in all, MFJ is an great, fun action movie and Steven Seagal's best since Into The Sun.
