Satisfying Character Study
posted on 27 Mar 2009Middle of Nowhere is a touching character study given an extra resonance by pairing the real life mother & daughter Susan Sarandon & Eva Amurri, playing a mother & daughter. Susan Sarandon takes a back seat while Eva Amurri really shines in her role as Grace, the older of two daughters being raised by her mother after their father's suicide. While mother's attention is focused on getting her younger daughter to modeling school, Grace has to find a summer job to raise money to fulfill her ambition of going to medical school. She does get a job at a water park where he meets Dorian (Anton Yelchin) who has an unusual scheme to find money to get Grace to college.This movie is full of real characters with whom is easy to identify and empathize with. The acting is great with Amurri and Yelchin the standouts.

posted on 27 Dec 2008This was definitely a well acted movie. It had all the fixings; it made me laugh and even managed to make my eyes water. Sarandon is the household name, but Yelchin and Amurri steal the show. The story clearly revolves around them. They come from different worlds at first, but seem to come to an understanding after all is said and done. There are many different themes in this movie, and they all play a part in developing each character. However only the two main actors (Yelchin and Amurri) really have the chance to showcase their talents. Also, this movie made me realize that Yelchin maybe in the movie business for a long, long time.Definitely worth a watch. Enjoy.
Nowhere in the Middle.
posted on 22 Sep 2008John Stockwell's Middle of Nowhere is his first film that doesn't use areas of water as a plot device or setting. Unlike Blue Crush and Turistas, Middle of Nowhere is an affecting dramedy about two teenagers on the brink of adulthood that meet working at a water park during the summer. Grace (Eva Amurri) is in dire need of money for college - money her family doesn't have. She cannot obtain a loan because after her father died, her mother Rhonda (Susan Sarandon) took out credit cards in her name, maxed them out and hasn't paid them back. This is her reason for working a 4 dollar an hour job at Baton Rouge's water park. The other teenager is Dorian (Anton Yelchin) who has to walk to and from the miserable job because the uncle he lives with doesn't appreciate his lack of maturity and responsibility - so he must do a mundane job to build character.Grace and Dorian become quick friends after Dorian asks Grace for a ride across town - the whole time unaware that he is a drug dealer. In need of quick, plentiful cash and not afraid of the police because Dorian says "Cops don't stop pretty white girls with nice smiles", they're on the daily voyages. After work, of course.At home, Dorian has to put up with her nagging and selfish mother trying to force her 15 year old sister Taylor Elizabeth (Willa Holland) into a modeling career. So in her attempts to juggle two jobs and a terrible home experience, she begins to fall apart - fortunately she relieves herself with a little crush on a rich and inspired young man in Ben (Justin Chatwin).The film mixes the different interactions between all of these characters in a generally funny and honest way that relates more to real life than it would to your typical indie flick that is means to entertain and comes off as humble repellent.The film holds a great ensemble - Yelchin is always great, Amurri is delightful, Sarandon is the mother you love to hate and Holland is tragic and adorable in her minor role. The cinematography was clearly thought through and is of a much more intelligent design than any other film similar to this.All in all, Middle of Nowhere is a well-paced and interesting introspective into the misleadingly unfortunate lives of teenagers. Although the exploration of the dependence that these characters have on friendship and love could have been explained and divulged into further, it is certainly amusing and a great change of pace for the director.

posted on 30 Aug 2009The story starts off with Grace(played by Eva Amurri)being rejected a student loan due to a bad credit history; without it she has no chance of getting into college.Soon she discovers that it is her mother's fault who had applied for and used credit cards under Grace's name.Grace starts to fear for the future.Grace's younger sister,Taylor(played by Willa Holland) is an aspiring model who's constantly pushed around by her mother.And then there is Dorian Spitz(brilliantly played by Anton Yelchin), a 17 year old who just wants to get away from his rich adopted family.Grace and Dorian meet while on a summer job and bond.They become quick friends and at some point they start selling pot,Grace is reluctant at first but the truth is, she needs the money...Great Indie film, well written,well directed and good acting, specially Anton Yelchin who delivered a flawless performance.Very promising actor. In The Middle of Nowhere is a great little movie that combines several genres and does not disappoint.It feels real and it doesn't take to long for the viewer to start caring for the characters. If only big budget movies were more like this...8/10
