One Good Chance

Robert Deniro's portrayal of Jack Walsh, a burned out bounty hunter and former Chicago police officer is excellent, displaying the consistent chase not only of his quarry but the one big score - the Midnight Run that he can retire on. Crafty and resourceful yet convincing in his scruples, Jack Walsh is a character one can watch again and again. Charles Grodin, for all his recent annoying talk-show babble, always has this film to his credit; no one can take away the beautiful portrayal of an accountant on the run from both the mob and FBI following his embezzlement of $15 million of mob money. "Midnight Run" is one good film that brings all the crucial elements together, a rare film that's easily watched again and again.

Unbelievably funny comedy with a great soundtrack

Midnight Run is one of the most underrated movies of recent memory. There has been many attempts a regurgitating the story line from my fellow commenter's, so I will go in a different direction. The Deniro character is awesome. Most Deniro fans will have to see this movie a couple of times to understand his comedic brilliance in this movie. The interaction between Deniro and Grodin is incomparable. It has been rumored that Grodin aggravated Deniro so much on the movie set that it brought out the best in these two actors in the film. The soundtrack is marvelously written by Danny Elfman. I have one question on the soundtrack...who is that playing the Slide and Electric Lead Guitar on the soundtrack? Is this Danny Elfman himself? There is not any listed credits for the musicians so it is impossible to tell who it is...but suffice it to say that the slide guitar player sounds like Ry Kooder on Steroids. The music complements the chase scenes like I haven't heard or seen in many years. If you do not have this movie in your collection, BUY IT. It is one of those movies you can watch every couple of months and never get bored with it or its characters.Jim Morris

How can this movie be Not Available? This is one of the funniest and most charming movies of all time. Great performances by DeNiro and Grodin, a great plot, great action and comedy, not to mention a fantastic supporting cast. There isn't much wrong with this film. Well, maybe some people will say the language is a little harsh. Ever see this movie on TNT? There's a lot lost in the translation. The foul language is part of the fun. Don't miss this movie...but see it on tape or DVD. I hope to see a re-released edition of this movie SOON.

nostalgic love for DeNiro

When you feel cynicism each time DeNiro does another Analyse That or 15 Minutes, rent or buy this classic and your faith in his greatness will return. Not much needs to be added about how great this movie is, just wanted to add my voice to the chorus.

My favorite scene-and it's tough to pull out one scene from a film which has no weak moments-is also DeNiro's visit to his home and his interaction with his daughter. It is one of the most tender moments in film.

Hey, Tony. He ain't mad at me, is he?

MIDNIGHT RUN is one of my favourite movies. The performances, jazzy score and yes, even the profanity combine to make this a must-see film. About the profanity; it's not offensive and the way it's used cracks me up. Aside from that, much has been said here (and by the way, it's pleasing to read that almost everyone here loves this movie as I do) about DeNiro, Grodin, Kotto etc. but I gotta tell ya, the two guys who make me giggle are Tony and Joey. These two good fellahs are like "blink and you'll miss 'em" bright sparks. When you rent the movie, pay attention to their antics. The thorough commitment to their relationship is a tribute to both actors and director, Brest.Anyway, get the movie. You won't be sorry."Getchyer camera, take a picture"

Pure entertainment!

Now, normally, I don't like De Niro in comedies. When he has to play an actively comic role, he seems too exaggerated - but in this case, he didn't go that way. His character seems mostly straight, but in a comic situation; and rather than being overblown and difficult to believe, it all seems to work out right. As a film, it has just about everything you might want - it's touching in places, but mostly it's just entertaining, funny, well paced and involving enough that you really care about what happens to the characters.Quite simply, I love this film!

A MIDNIGHT RUN FULL OF LAUGHS!

"Midnight Run" was one of the best action/comedies that I saw from the '80s next to "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Lethal Weapon". It has a lot of good comedy, cool action, and one of the best performances from Robert DeNiro. It also has a slick storyline: A bounty hunter is offered $100,000 to return a guy who, embazzled $15 million from the Mob, gave it to charity, and jumped bail from New York to L.A. in five days. But things get harder when the FBI get on their trail for the bail jumper to testify and the Mob wants to kill both of them. But I can't just give credit to the people in front of the camera, I also have to give the credit for those behind the camera like the writer, George Gallo and director Martin Brest for this clever movie.

Midnight Run 1988, the benchmark for buddy buddy road movie.

So it be that it is one of my favourite films of all time , yes it is, yet I have strayed away from writing a user comment for it for the allegations of bias on my part would surely follow from my on line friends !..........but the last two weeks have really forced me into making this astonishing admission, let me tell: A recent visit to see my Mother and the usual chat on film brought about a confession from her that it is actually her favourite DeNiro film , I am my Mothers son as it were. Then I'm on vacation with my sweetheart and during a stop over at her parents place, I see a copy of Midnight Run nestling nicely amongst some very tidy classics of years gone by. Turns out the in-laws love the film and it's something of a staple requirement in that household.Cool.My girl then demands {politely asks really} that we watch Midnight Run last night, so we date night it, and both of us are once again blown away with a joyous appreciation of what just might be the unsung DeNiro classic, the missing 80s masterpiece as regards everything coming together, and simply the best buddy buddy movie that ever hit the screen.De Niro & Grodin, there is no other duo in the genre that bounces off each other with the 100% joyful results we get here, they define the term dynamic duo. Director Martin Brest lets his actors do their thing, it is the sort of film where the cast are just happy to be working and use their talent. The score from Danny Elfman is like some hybrid western wacky races fusion, but hell it works well, I paid special attention to it last night, delightful. The dialogue is electric, it really is, some of the script is so sharp it should be put away in a sharps box. The rest of the cast are uniformly brilliant, be it the wonderful John Ashton as rival bounty hunter Marvin, or the menacing yet cheekily attired Dennis Farina as Jimmy Serrano, it's pretty much a flawless cast in optimum gear. The rating here is a disgrace, it really is, I can only think that DeNiro fans really didn't want to see him do comedy, well I say they are wrong ! , because this film shows that the bloke could be legend in the genre as well, perhaps he just needed the perfect foil of Charles Grodin alongside him ?, either way this film is smart, funny, even tender at times, but it has few peers for comedy, action and astute direction, 10/10 is my rate and always will be.Fistophobia forever !.

Robert DeNiro is a bounty hunter who has been hired to bring in Charles Grodin's altruistic embezzler, who has stolen millions from a Las Vegas crime boss and given it to charity. A rival bounty hunter, mob goons and FBI agents are also after him. The way in which these various elements cross paths and converge for a suspenseful finale is just one of the marvels of this well-constructed script. The interplay between DeNiro and Grodin is even more wonderful. There are no jokes here, but the two characters are so well-drawn and mismatched that the laughs are inherent in the situation. The two lead actors do masterful jobs and develop a chemistry that pushes this film toward the top of my list of favorite movies.

Why isn't this movie rated higher?!?!?!

posted on 26 May 2009

I hate to be one of these posters here on IMDb that complain about a movie rating: But WHY in the hell wasn't this inducted into the top 250? Unlike almost every other movie I love, that has their flaws, "Midnight Run" does not. The movie is so well-scripted, the characters so well-acted, that I cannot believe this movie hasn't at least reached 9.0 star-status. In my eyes, it's as good as "Scent of a Woman" (same director), and even better than "Goodfellas." "Goodfellas" was a damn fine movie. Good script, good acting, and good director. But the reason I put a movie like "Midnight Run" in front of it is because its two main characters are actually likable people. You actually really care about what happens to these two guys, Jack Walsh and Jonathan Mardukas, thus engrossing you more into the movie. They're so different, yet so much alike. Their personalities are probably about the equivalent of Oscar & Felix's from "The Odd Couple"--except Jack Walsh uses the F-word like it's going out of style. Jack's vulgarities would probably scare Oscar into Felix's loving arms. But Deniro and Grodin don't deserve all the credit here--only 80 percent of it--because there's also a great supporting cast: Yaphet Kotto (FBI Agent Mosely), John Ashton (Marvin Dorfler), Dennis Farina (Jimmy Serrano) & Joe Pantoliano (Eddie Moscone). Besides Jack & Jonathan, my favorite character would have to be Jack's sleazy bounty-hunting associate, Marvin Dorfler. True: the guys a scumbag, but he's a funny scumbag, "Watch your cigarettes with these guys, Jack!" All in all, a great, funny and sometimes even moving (engrossing) film. Four stars out of four, ten out of ten, 5 out of f--you get the idea.Rated R for: Just profanity, I think. There's some action; but you'd have to be a real wimp to be offended by the PG-ish "violence" in here.

A great 1980's action comedy!

posted on 26 May 2009

Hilarious odd-couple / road movie / cop movie / action comedy packaged together very well. Robert De Niro is Jack Walsh, an ousted former Chicago cop now working as a bounty hunter, who is determined to bring in bail-jumping accountant Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin) who embezzled millions of dollars from nasty Mafioso Jimmy Serrano (Dennis Farina). Of course, it is not that easy, both the FBI and the Mob are on their trail - and the whole story snowballs into a sorry ordeal along the lines of "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" as Walsh and Mardukas are forced to continuously change their mode of transportation. This was made back when producer / director Martin Brest made GOOD movies - not notorious box office duds like "Gigli". He only makes a movie once every couple of years so he shouldn't have disappointed everybody like that.Anyway, THIS movie, while rather lengthy, is upbeat, action-packed, and pretty funny, as the swaggering De Niro and the very dry Grodin display perfect odd-couple chemistry. Good supporting cast, too, and lively music score by Danny Elfman. This here is the kind of action comedy that is actually fun to watch, without getting lame or stupid or annoying.Followed by two made for television movies in which Jack Walsh was played by Christopher McDonald."I tell you what, you don't co-operate, you're gonna be suffering from fist-o-phobia."9/10

Not just a "guy" movie

posted on 06 Apr 2009

It's one of the two funniest movies this old grandmother of 17 has ever seen. ("O Brother, Where Art Thou?" being the other.) I even bought the thing, and I find a movie worth buying about once a decade.

After DeNiro's first 150 utterances of the F-word (all in the first three minutes), its sheer reflexivity neutralizes the shock value. (Though the bleeped-out TV version I've seen once or twice is just as funny.)

BRILLIANT writing: not a false note in the dialogue, nothing that strains credulity or bogs down the story. Too many unforgettable lines to list. My favorite might be the exchange, toward the end, between DeNiro's Walsh and the FBI agent Mosely who's dogged him most of the movie. DeNiro's bloodied-but-unbowed cockiness and the total unexpectedness of Mosely's (grudging and quickly revoked) hint of a smile is one of the better moments in film history.

Alonzo Mosely: "What should be of paramount importance to you right now....is the fact that you're gonna spend 10 years in the penitentiary for impersonating a federal officer.

Jack Walsh: 10 years for impersonating a fed, uh?

Alonzo Mosely: 10 years.

Jack Walsh: How comes no one's after you? "

A surprisingly tender and uplifting movie, F-word or not.

Great flick and killer guitarist on the Elfman soundtrack

posted on 28 Mar 2009

I was watching this movie recently and I really took notice of the tasty R&B ensemble that makes up the Danny Elfman soundtrack. The guitar work is so nice I did a search to find who it is. I'm happy to report that the electric guitarist is the late Blues guitar virtuoso, Stevie Ray Vaughn. Who knew? SRV fans should give another listen to this fine soundtrack. Great road flick with real world dialog.

De Niro at his best. A quality film, and one with about as many quality one-liners for Dennis Farina as possible. Well worth watching and the sort of film that you can watch more than once and not lose anything from.

Warring Cosmologies

posted on 01 Feb 2009

You know whence the characters sprung: "The Odd Couple" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", vs. those originating from "The Godfather" series, and many lesser mob stories. What made this click are the three cosmologies, shaped by Smith's "Gorky Park"...""Why don't you like the FBI?"...The manic power that was Kirwill made a slight revolution. The grin twisted. "Well, for lots of reasons. Professionally, because the FBI doesn't conduct investigations, they pay informers. Doesn't matter what kind of case--spies, civil rights, Mafia--all they know is informers...See that's the basic difference. A cop goes out on the street and digs up information for himself. He's willing to get dirty because his ambition in life is to be a detective. But a bureau agent is really a lawyer or an accountant; he wants to work in an office and dress nice, maybe go into politics...""And so we have a free for all war of cops vs. the bureau vs. the Mob, all making and switching alliances in order to "drop the Duke." Once the bail jumper is nabbed, it's "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". DeNiro plays it straight here, but the gems are Grodin, riffing on Woody Allen ("These things go down!") and Jack Webb ("Then why do they call you Red?"), and Kotto ("Is this going to upset me?").This movie is the necessary slab in our collective consciousness holding up "Goodfellas" and "Donnie Brasco", etc. Right now, "The Sopranos" occupies this same psychological space.Cinematically, I can't think of a finer match of a completely original soundtrack (courtesy of Elfman) to the visual narrative, revolving somewhere around Chicago electric blues, Stax and Motown.

Great Flick!

Midnight Run is a classic...DeNiro's acting in this film is superb...anyone who is familiar with his mannerisms in previous roles will love this film...the interplay with him and Grodin is priceless, I only wish some buddy comedies today could be put together so well...there was absolutely nothing that sucked about this movie, so I don't know what the previous poster was smoking when he wrote that...anyone who hasn't seen this movie, go out and rent it if you see it at your local video store...you won't regret it one bit!

Where's the SEQUEL??

Hello? Hollywood has made some of the most inane decisions involving what projects to green light. Why has there been 4 Lethal Weapons and no sequel to Midnight Run? 8 Friday the 13th Movies? 10 Star Treks? Just watch this movie...it's funny. There is a real sense of character development that is a rare asset in modern film. Plus, plenty of explosions and people getting knocked out. :^) Charles Groden and Robert DeNiro could do worse than make a fun, lively sequel. When you see the end you will get an idea of the many possible futures, you'll be that interested in the character's lives. See it!

Definite "Guy" movie delivers the goods.

This is one of those movies that you will want to watch a number of times, making it an excellent addition to your home library. This film has too many memorable lines to mention, and moves through them at a fun pace. De Niro and Grodin play off of each other beautifully, and Dennis Farina is priceless as the mob boss. You'll quote this one as often as "Fletch" or "Spinal Tap". A real winner.

Midnight Run

The chemistry between DeNiro and Grodin is almost equal to Martin and Candy in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. This is a funny and entertaining movie throughout. There is little not to find great. I think the best scene, however, may been the "Red's Bar" scene, where Grodin pretends to be an FBI agent. Grodin is very good as a Felix Ungerlike accountant, who is on the run from the mob. He is a very unlikely person to be doing so. He is very fussy and he clashes with Deniro (Jack Walsh), who is a former-cop bounty hunter whose only two emotions are "silence and rage". There is a cross-country chase also involving a rival bounty hunter, two bails bondsmen, an FBI agent (Yaphet Kotto), Dennis Farina as a mob boss, and two of his henchmen. Both Grodin's and De Niro's characters end up learning a lot about each other. That is really what the movie is about. In the end, they end up helping each other out.
