PLOT SUMMARY

Christian, a young wannabe Bohemian poet living in 1899 Paris, defies his father by joining the colorfully diverse clique inhabiting the dark, fantastical underworld of Paris' now legendary Moulin Rouge. In this seedy but glamorous haven of sex, drugs and newly-discovered electricity, the poet-innocent finds himself plunged into a passionate but ultimately tragic love affair with Satine, the club's highest paid star and the city's most famous courtesan. Their romance is played out against the infamous club - a meeting place of high life and low, where slumming aristocrats and the fashionably rich mingled with workers, artists, Bohemians, actresses and courtesans.

There's Magic in Moulin Rouge

posted on 28 Aug 2009

Earlier this year, two friends of mine and I decided to go see a movie. Seeing as we already saw the other big blockbusters Pearl Harbor and The Mummy 2 (like everyone else in the world), we thought we'd take our chances seeing Moulin Rouge. After reading a few negative articles about it beforehand, as I was buying my ticket and walking into the theater, I thought this movie was going to be a complete waste of my time and money... I have never been so wrong. Director Baz Luhrmann has the gift of taking his audience into a world we could never imagine. At the begining there are so many twist and turns and suprises, you feel as if your head is about to explode, but he then slows it down to a pace where the audience is able to "act" like they are calm, but their adrenaline is still vastly going. Uniquely, Luhrmann takes 19th century pop songs as the musical basis, remixes from the Beetles, Elton John, David Bowie, and Madonna's "Like a Virgin" are just a few. Nicole Kidman gives a beautiful performance as the heroine Satine. Her dancing, singing, acting, all lovely combined; I could not think of anyone better for the role. The real surprise, however, came at the point where Ewan McGregor (know to many as "that one dude in Star Wars"), began to burst into song. His voice resembles that of a mix between Elton John and Sting (sorry if you disagree). His acting performance shines through and through in each scene, and during the "Elephant Love Melody", any woman would wish it was her up on the screen and Nicole out of the picture. But then one comes back to reality and realizes that unfortunately, this is only a movie. One with dazzling special effects, beautiful costumes, amazing scenery, breathtaking performances, and soulful singing. If Moulin Rouge does not win an Oscar in 2002 for best picture as well as in many other categories, I will not only be surprised, but disappointed in the Academy that they do not know an Awardwinning movie when they see one.

Take in a French show for $8

Different…yes! I think a good pre-requisite for this flick is that you must have seen, and APPRECIATED, either a Vegas show or a musical production of some sort. I seen a 270 lb. man storm out of this movie, cussing up a storm, while his girlfriend/wife(??) was running after him. This is a musical….where each act inevitably breaks into song. I thought it was pretty good, but I'm a Kidman fan, even more since she's single…anyone want to introduce me? One more thing…the theme of this movie was summed up in one line: `It's a story about love…..at the Moulin Rouge.' Ya know, this `line' could've been used for another 2001 summer flick: `It's a story about love…..at Pearl Harbor!' (Needed to get at least one more shot at that movie!) B-

I was sold on this movie when I saw the trailer. Unlike many other movies, I'm still sold on it now that I've seen it. Kidman, McGregor and Broadbent were great, the rest of the cast adequate. The use of contemporary songs I liked a lot. Visually, it blew me away. So much so that half way through the movie, I started thinking 'Give this guy (Baz Luhrmann) a shot at a new Batman movie! He'd be perfect to succeed Tim Burton, and make everybody forget a certain Mr. Schumacher.'

Worst movie I've ever seen (so far) :(

Don't waste your money.Would have been better if they wrote their own music instead of the cheezy use of pop songs. What a dreadful low the film industry has hit. Doesn't anyone appreciate originality and creativity anymore? Recycling music is not being creative and I feel the film was highly overrated. On the plus side, I liked the costumes and the cinematography, but hated the music, the plot and the acting so much that I could not appreciate the good stuff.

What can I say?

I'll be brief on this one. This movie was just surprisingly SPECTACULAR! "Moulin Rouge" is a cinematic masterpiece in the making, and is sure to be one early contender for next year's Oscars. The performances of everyone are very good, and special praise must go to both Ewan MacGregor and Nicole Kidman, who are perfectly cast and possess an amazing screen charisma and chemistry together. "Moulin Rouge" is probably the next film in my collective movie recollection that will become a cult favorite of mine, and I can't wait till this film is out on video!!!My rating is 8.4 out of 10.

Brilliant

What else can you say? -- It's amazing to look at, visually.-- It's a completely original & downright brilliant concept.-- It's wonderfully performed by everyone on the screen.-- The musical (re)interpretations are simply thrilling.I have a feeling this will be the first DVD that I actually WEAR OUT from over use!

Stick with it, and you will be rewarded

This is the type of movie that I am usually predisposed to dislike -- an overhyped production that starts off as a mess, which Moulin Rouge definitely does. While the first 15 minutes of the film are almost unintelligible, they are visually stunning, and that was enough to keep me going. After quite a while, the actual plot appears, and while it's hardly original, it provided a good framework upon which to hang all the rest of the weirdness that follows. An ensemble cast performs magnificently and that's the real attraction of Moulin Rouge. Nicole Kidman redeems herself here as Santine, the courtesan with a heart of gold -- she's truly stunning, both as an actress and a vocalist. Ewan MacGregor surprises me with his earnestness, vitality, and naivete as Christian, the young writer. Jim Broadbent deserves his Oscar nomination as Zidler, the complicated proprietor of the Moulin Rouge. On the other end of the spectrum, the Duke is played as Snidely Whiplash by Richard Roxbourgh with no shadings whatsoever, and John Leguizamo is just ridiculous as Toulouse-Lautrec, affecting both a poor French accent and a ludicrous lisp. However, the use of contemporary music (and mostly old pop songs) bothered me throughout the entire movie. I don't believe that an original piece of music was presented until almost an hour had gone by. Instead, we get several riffs on Elton John, the Beatles, the disco era -- "Voulez-vous couchez avec moi"? Come on. It serves to pull this viewer out of the flow of the story. I didn't really become absorbed until much later on, when the scenery stopped being so intrusive, the quick cuts and speed-up/slow-down effects subsided, and anachronistic songs gave way to some beautiful original work that actually had something to do with the story. The choreography got pretty silly, too, especially toward the beginning. All in all, a visual feast and a belatedly engaging story combine with mostly brilliant performances to deliver a very entertaining film. It's not my favorite, but I give it an 8.

What A Horror

I sat through this monstrosity nearly three times, desperately searching for some redeeming quality. Not even half way through the third showing I had to have the film stopped because my search was obviously hopeless and I simply could not take it any longer. No, I was not expecting the wonderful 1952 film by John Huston, based on the novel of Pierre La Mure's fictional account of French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, yet that is what I suggest you see instead of this.I like generally enjoy musicals, and I like the individual cast members in other things, but everyone involved this piece of trash should be soundly slapped! It is an insult to the eyes and ears.I do not usually condone extreme measures, such as book burning, but in this case I'll make an exception.I have seen hundreds of films in my fifty plus years, including "The Terror of Tiny Town" (1938) but even that is Oscar material next to this audio-visual vomit. I only wish that I could have issued a score lower than a single star.

Moulin Rouge is The Matrix of musicals.

Fast, brash, and relentless in sound and image. Nicole Kidman is a diamond in the dark, rough setting of this fin-de-surreal Montmartre. With a marvelous cast and endless surprises, this film takes you where no musical has gone before. Enjoy the trip.

A great visual achievement, missing a truly moving tragedy

***MAY CONTAIN MINOR SPOILERS***Having just seen 'MOULIN ROUGE' for the fifth time, I am ready to deliver my verdict on this visually challenging, but somewhat emotionally distant film. It's chief asset, and it is a wonderful asset, is director Baz Luhrmann's original and imaginative view of Paris, circa 1900. The film is a how-to exercise in making big, grand entertainment and making it entertaining rather than resulting in an exercise of self-congratulation. I enjoyed the way that, visually, everything was brazenly overdone, down to the decision to film all scenes, particularly the dance scenes, in gaudy reds and yellows.Performances, save one, were particularly well done in a film that must have been difficult to perform in. Nicole Kidman delivers another superb performance, proving that she is also a very adept singer. Jim Broadbent and Richard Roxbrugh are also very fine in roles which they seem to have been instructed to not hold back; I particularly enjoyed Roxbrugh's immensley entertaining villian, who reminded me of the man in the pantomimes in the black hat who grins wickedly at the audience, and Roxbrugh embodies this persona wonderfully. The one performance that just doesn't reach the same level of excellence of the rest of the cast is that of leading man Ewan McGregor. His singing voice, particularly in the scenes where he must hit, or struggle to hit, the high notes of 'THE SOUND OF MUSIC,' grew increasingly tiresome and irritating for me, (I have spoken to other people who have said that McGregor's voice was acceptable, so it must be a matter of personal choice.) I also found his constant reliance on looks from his puppy-dog eyes to be somewhat nauseating.Luhrmann has said that, with his movie, he wanted to present a view of the Moulin Rouge that would be shocking/exciting to contemporary audiences. This results in the usage of music that is some seventy to eighty years out of its time. I don't know where Luhrmann found the inspiration to have Kidman sing 'DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND' as an opening cabaret number, or to stage Madonna's 'LIKE A VIRGIN' using Richard Roxbrugh and Jim Broadbent careening around on a bed on wheels, or to stage the Police hit 'ROXANNE' as a tango dance led by Jacek Koman, but these scenes create moments of true movie magic and stand out in my mind as some of the great moments in modern cinema. The one final fault with this film lays with its love story. The love story didn't work for me because it involved laying heavy human emotion on two characters who had insofar been established as caricatures. I think back to Luhrmann's own 'STRICTLY BALLROOM' (1993) which treated the love story between its two caricatures as secondary to visuals and therefore succeeded. I must confess to feeling very restless during the final curtain-call scene. I stared at the screen and wondered whether I was supposed to care about a character who wasn't even human. The tragedy would have worked far better for me had it been a more metaphoric one, to fit with the mood of the preceding two hours. It is still one of the greatest looking films I have ever seen and the music and set design are first-class, as you will see from my 'out of 10' rating. However it misses its potential to be a great film because of Luhrmann's inability to decide which way he wants it; all style or all substance or, (and this would have been the mark of a great film) a bit of both. 9 out of 10.

Patchwork quilt of stunning brilliance. Wacky ride through passion, love, and life. Is it a play or a movie of a play? Music and singing is always there as if it were the true reality of life. Something new, something old, something borrowed. Refreshing to see something truly unique on the big screen for a change.

Simply Amazing

Welcome "Rocky Horror Show" and "The Sound of Music" to the modern world.
This amazingly creative and superbly performed and cinematographic masterpiece hit many emotional buttons and swept the eye with brilliant colors, set designs, fantastic movement, and great music and singing. My hats off to Nicole Kidman who deserves a great and brilliant career. I only wish that the beginning half of the movie would have be consistent with the last half of the movie in terms of style and approach to movie-making. It went from Rocky Horror to mainstreet musical, albeit, updated to a new modern standard for musicals.

A beautiful, lovely, amazing film about "truth, beauty, freedom, but above all, love"!

I must admit, before I first saw this movie (my friend Jessica dragged me to the theatre) I was utterly skeptical (this was before the Oscar nods and raving reviews). How could a musical about a nightspot with a stale, old plot be any good? In more ways than I could have dreamed. The acting is spectacular, as are the cast's voices. Ewan MacGregor and Nicole Kidman sing and act beautifully; their chemistry jumps right off the screen! MacGregor has one of the loveliest voices I've ever heard. Listening to him belt out "Your Song" is amazing (not to mention the fact that his smile makes me melt). How did he not get an Oscar nomination?!? Jim Broadbent (as the exuberant Harold Zidler, the "king" of the Moulin Rouge) is fantastic in his supporting role, and Richard Roxburgh as the villianous Duke is perfect for the part. Baz Luhrmann is an utter genius. A genius! It has so many of his special little touches that make the film unique and original. I can think of few other directors who could pull this off with as much grace as he did. It was a cinematic crime that he was robbed of an Oscar nomination. (This movie recieved far less Oscar recognition than it deserved). The story may have been used many times in the art of film, but Luhrmann and Craig Pearce (his co-writer) make it stunningly unique. It's heartbreaking yet beautiful. There are few other movies that touch the heart such as this. The music is spectacular! Reinventing many songs such as "Roxanne", "Your Song", and "Like a Virgin" (though I must admit I found that sequence a bit unnecessary) was delightful to watch, and I especially loved the "Elephant Love Medley" where Christian sings a mixture of classic love songs including "All You Need is Love", "Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong", "Just One Night", and "I Will Always Love You" in attempt to convince Satine that they "could be heroes forever and ever". The few originals of the movie (such as Satine's hopeful melody "One Day I'll Fly Away" and the wonderful, beautifully lyrical "Come What May") are absolutely FANTASTIC!All in all, this movie is stunning. This movie is colourful. This movie is beautiful. This movie is heartbreaking. This movie is hopeful. This movie is quietly happy. This movie is more than just a movie. It is a secret longing to be loved, and loved alone that we all have inside us, which whether we have it boldly out in the open, like Christian; or silently locked in away inside so that barely even we know, like Satine, is undoubtedly there. See this movie. You won't regret it. the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return....

Must see (to use a common phrase)

Being only a film connoiseur in spe, I must confess, that I have spoken the following phrase on several occassions, these are, however, listed below in reverse chronological order:This is the greatest movie I have ever seen!!!(Listing of earlier incidents follow)101 ReykjavikAudition (Odishon)Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wu Hu, Zhang long)Dark CityA French movie, the name of which I can't remember, but that touched me deeplyMost of the movies conforming to the Danish "Dogma 95" dogma (yes, "Dancer In the Dark" is one of those). This is, however, the first movie, that I have refrained from describing in other words than those, the cause of which being, that though I hold my knowledge of my native tongue to be rather exceptional (I disclaim it being English, lest I make a fool of myself), I have not been able to find words that do this masterpiece justice!

The Most Impressive Love Match Since Romeo And Juliet

posted on 08 Aug 2009

I still remember the day that I went to the cinema for to watch 'Moulin Rouge' -- simply extraordinary, a movie full of thrills. I think that Nicole Kidman is really impressive and I was surprised by her fascinating voice when singing. The rhythm of the movie is frenetic and the scene of the 'can can' is 'spectacular spectacular'. For me it is the story of the most impressive love match since Romeo and Juliet, and the tragic end instantly brings to mind the story of the Lovers of Verona. The real highlight among the well-known songs in the film occurs when a duet is performed By Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. In fact, I much prefer Ewan's version of Elton John's "Your Song." I always liked it but now I love it. I went out of the cinema enthralled and I have seen the DVD loads of times. It is the perfect movie to see in good company, and to cry with emotion.

Absolutely...Flawless and Amazing

Consider a film that will stir your all feelings:Love, humor, happiness etc.Moulin Rouge is one of these rare films and it's not exploiting your feelings and abusing your senses. It's sometimes coming into such a moment that you are becoming disabled how to act cry, laugh or what? But this situation's main reason is perfect acting and harmony between Mcgregor and Kidman.Yes their performance is giving strength to each other's performance and this harmony is what making this film such a modern classic.Yes if we look as a musical film it's not actually putting music to the front but putting this love story to front and using music and songs to increase the effect of the film and becoming successful. In another words We can use drama as a genre for this film, because using music doesn't actually make a film musical, but this film can be put into a sub-genre and can be classified as musical-drama.But it has very big inspirations from musical atmosphere, all these funny and colorful world are main body of musical films.Luhrmann uses these both things(drama and musical)in a successful way.A beautiful lady(actually a bitch)sells his body till she sells her heart to a handsome and poor writer. Also this ironic side of story is enough for a musical-drama.But As a conclusion:Moulin Rouge is a very brilliantly made and harmonized film.

a spectacular spectacular!

while i found myself absolutely overwhelmed by the breakneck pace of the opening scenes, when the first scene is over, i was struck by how successfully the director captured the sense of an opera. while describing the movie to friends, i describe it as an opera with dialogue.a lot of comments have been made about nicole kidman's performance to which i find it unnecessary to add. however, nowhere near enough attention is paid to ewan macgregor's voice and acting. in the scene just before the first duet, i was struck by how much macgregor reminded me of gene kelly, both physically and in the kind of warmth he was able to project in his voice. truly stunning.and one comment about the music: a truly first-rate job was done stringing these compositions together. the transitions in the medleys are masterful. and i'll never hear "roxanne" the same way again.ed

Even though I'm a sucker for musicals, I wasn't planning on seeing it when it came out. My cousin took me to see it and I fell in love. It's now my favorite, or at least one of them. I seriously went to see it in the theaters 7 times (it was a slow summer). It's a classic tale of boy falls in love with a girl he can't have and the consequences of that. Yes, it's over the top. But that's what makes it wonderful. In the first ten minutes, you find out how it's going to end, but that's the beauty of Baz. All of the actors are brilliant as well. Check it out even if you don't like musicals. My boyfriend used to fast forward through the songs in Disney movies, but even he thought it was great.10/10. Try and top it.

Three Movies in One: All of them Bad

The Moulin Rouge is a theater in Paris known for its elaborate and and somewhat racy shows, now a favorite for tourists visiting the city (I myself have fallen into that category). With all of the media attention bestowed on this project because of Nicole Kidman, and the fact that this was a musical, I was curious to see how it had turned out (plus my girlfriend wanted to go).The film begins quite promisingly, with an elaborate computer generation of Paris in 1899, including some whimsical touches, showing very interestingly the area of Paris in which the Moulin Rouge ("Red Windmill" in English) is found. I was reminded immediately of Tim Burton's work, with the attention to detail, and slightly surrealistic atmosphere; (I was also reminded of Disney's "Mary Poppins" with its rooftops of London scenes). This alone makes the movie worth seeing (well, almost). The movie starts out cheerfully, and somewhat goofily, in a good natured way, to introduce the protagonist, an aspiring writer on sojourn from London. When he begins to sing "The Hills are Alive (With the Sound of Music)" as suggested lyrics for a show on which his bohemian upstairs neighbors are laboring to produce for the proprietor the Moulin Rouge, the movie takes a turn into what I thought was parody, but sadly, was a harbinger of what to expect for the next two hours.Nicole Kidman is a prostitute employed by the moulin Rouge as a singer, but she refers to herself (and her occupation) by the more noble sound epithet of "courtesan". This may elevate in some way her status in the film, but unfortunately for her, it does nothing to help her singing, which is generally on the level of a medium sized high school musical. Editing techniques vary from styles lifted directly from the (very) old 1960's TV show The Monkees" to the frenetic MTV music video genre. All of this is pasted onto a very tired old plot about star-crossed lovers and a buffoonish wealthy rival for Miss Kidman's affections. Anachronistic uses of modern songs become jarring, like some Saturday Night Live skit that drags on and on; (some in the audience laughed heartily, blissfully unaware that it wasn't supposed to be funny).By the film's end, it is nothing more than a poorly scored and overbloated opera, or Shakespearean tragedy.
