Weak and disappointing

posted on 30 Aug 2009

I'll just start by saying that I thought I'd enjoy this movie a lot more than I actually did. For the most part, I like both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and I thought the tandem would be perfect for what sounded like a unique and fun plot. As I read previews for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, I was looking forward to a fun-filled action/comedy. As it turns out, I was mostly bored throughout the greater part of the film, and basically the entire second half. With all the potential surrounding this film, what could have possibly gone wrong to make it such a dud? In short, the script. (Well, I guess it's not technically a dud by revenue standards, but I thought this could have been a great movie, and it turned out to be very average.) There were some good one-liners and smirks throughout, and Angelina and Brad did a great job in portraying the awkwardness of their relationship, but I didn't feel like the screenplay took full advantage of the opportunity to create those moments when the entire audience can't help but to burst into laughter. There were none of these moments. It seemed almost as if Vince Vaughn was added to be the comedic relief (and he was the funniest part of the movie), but there's no reason they should have needed him to make this movie funny. Furthermore, the plot kinda died half-way through the film and the second half was mostly action (with a car chase and some gun fights), but they were the kind of action scenes that you just want to end so the movie can continue. They were too cliché with nothing visually spectacular and did nothing to enhance the quality of the film or the plot. In fact, the plot "twist" near the end was underwhelming and pretty much irrelevant and could've been left out all-together.As far as content goes (for those who are interested), the film is definitely PG-13 as there is non-stop violence through the bulk of the film... lots of people getting shot or stabbed, a broken neck or two and several explosions and/or car crashes. However, I do not recall seeing any blood at all. Also, there are some sexual situations that may be disturbing to some of the young'uns - I'm mostly remembering one part where Angelina plays dominatrix as one of her assignments. And there is some sex talk and innuendo, as well as the general make-out scenes which are pretty tame for the most part. Of course, the film was edited down from R (with a sex scene cut) to earn a PG-13 rating and rake in several million more dollars...I gave this movie a 5. I'm fairly surprised it has almost a 7 rating at the current moment because there is really nothing that stands out about this movie or makes it special. The writers somehow took an unique and fun plot, two or three superstar actors and a large budget and managed to make an overly average, cliché, and unfunny film.

Disappointing

I went to a later show, I usually go to matinees to help stretch my Social Security bucks to allow a few more movies each month, the theater was about half full ideal for a comedy you get some help laughing. There were only a handful of mild universal chuckles during the movie, my personal way of rating this obviously is not a comedy, if it is they missed. It may have been an off day for me, but the whole movie seemed flat, forced, and slow. I have to admit that I have had movies strike me this way and then after watching them several times on Cable or DVD I can come around to them, but that is not what you need when you see it in the theater.Just my opinion, I may be wrong!

Now that's an hour and a half of my life I want back

What rubbish!A married couple find out that each other is an assassin, and now they've been given the job of killing each other. What a premise!Forgetting how dumb that plot is, you'd think maybe you could make it pretty wacky, right? A few jokes here and there? Seeing as how the script is weak and Angelina Jolie is about as funny as a soggy piece of toast, this didn't work either. So what are we left with? A bit of action, which is also poor except for a showdown in the house. How could this have been better? Maybe replace Jolie with Janeane Garofalo, put some effort into the script, add some more support actors besides a wasted Vince Vaughn and you'd be getting somewhere. This will probably fall on deaf ears though as it was just another obvious CASH GRAB!!!!!!! The crazy thing was Jolie and Pitt had great chemistry, but maybe let's leave the comedy genre next time.

Terrible attempt as an action movie

posted on 22 Aug 2009

Well, my grandparents picked up this movie from Blockbuster. The guy said it was great, so taking the employee's advice, my grandparents rented it...it was terrible. I've never seen a worse mockery of an action movie than this. This movie was absolutely terrible. There was barely a plot, and hardly a setting. The director just relied on sex and violence...which doesn't make a good movie alone. He took two "celebs", put them into a bag of awfulness, and beat all of the good acting out of them...which was never really there. Now, if this movie had a plot at least like one of the new Bond movies, it would of been mediocre. This was a sorry attempt at making a romantic action movie.

Extremely clever and well made!

This movie is nothing but a slick and clever movie from top to bottom. From the minute they find out to the minute they fight, I thought this movie made us laugh at the characters and how they after all, are married, but still, they're trying to kill each other. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie make this movie the slickest, funniest, and most action packed film of the summer. It's action sequences were incredible, especially at the end. Brad and Angelina are both used to action movies. Put them together? You get this great movie! The way on how they love each other and have to kill each other makes this also a romantic movie. Vince makes this movie hilarious. Angelina keeps it slick and sexy. And Brad keeps the action going. This is a FANTASTIC MOVIE!!!

I'd buy it on DVD, but I wouldn't pay retail.

I think this film was good value for money. It is entertaining and provides enough explosions and gunfire to entertain the average teenage male. Superior to, say, the James Bond formula, for two reasons: 1) Female lead character, who is not a damsel in distress, nor evil temptress 2) Less dialogue emphasis on gadgetry. Plus, the product-placement was less obvious, except the full-screen shot of Mr Smith's watch. There is definitely chemistry between the lead actors, and, surprisingly, the comedy was actually entertaining; though I think the director had problems maintaining tension in some of the action sequences.

Fabulous movie in which you get to see how a couple resolves ALL their problems

I think this was a great movie the special effects were awesome and Angelina and brad where both perfect for the movie and their characters. The plot was also very cool i love to think while i am seeing a movie and it was really cool to remember everything at the end and see most of the things were obviously going to happen. the only thing i disliked about was the reference to my city Bogota, here it is really cold and not hot as shown in the movie, we are also a big city with lots of technology not that little hot town showed in the movie, there are many places like that in Colombia but not in Bogota. I hope my comment is useful to you, also it is my first so i am really sorry if it is not good enough.

..I really don't know what to say..

I really tried to like this movie - thank heavens I saw it free !!! I thought the newspaper-ads were appealing; I didn't see trailers in theaters - the PR was good. I know nothing about Jolie, but can see why Julia Roberts wanted to have her lips pumped.Pitt has done some good films - "Meet Joe Black" was excellent. I don't think any of the main actors in this movie watched the "dailies", or the money was so good they didn't care, and the editor must have been holding his nose....all very slick and colorful, but was there a story ? Lots of other commentators didn't think so, either. I could have sworn I saw this flick before - was it a re-make ? Someone commented that Jolie had had lots of plastic-surgery - hmmmmm. She certainly looks like the modern girl, but I wouldn't say she's beautiful. I met Pitt face-to-face - very good-looking man. However, it's almost "surgery" time for him if he's going to retain that "pretty-boy" look.Several people commented it had almost the same plot as "The War of the Roses" - not even close !! To compare "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" to this film is sacrilege. It is my opinion that younger people get so caught-up in "stars'" personal lives from the pulp mags, they convince themselves ALL their films are good, no matter what.I wish someone had told me this was supposed to be a comedy. I was laughing for all the wrong reasons - stupidity ! I didn't even watch it till the end, and couldn't care less how it ended. Sorry, folk - this is a real stinker on all sides.

"Bourne Identity' was a great film because it tried to keep you anchored in the real world. "Swingers" was great because it knew where to draw the line at 'over the top'. This movie tries to have it both ways. How can 'over the top' action scenes be taken seriously? Evidently, we are supposed to take this film's premise very lightly. But yet, there is some hardcore violence and death of a lot of good guys. How can we have any empathy for a loving couple that are being hunted, when they survive thousands of bullets with nary a scratch? M&MS does not know when to draw that line. I am reminded of moments in the series "The Sopranos", which also juxtaposes violence with humor. You can only allow so much humor before you start to lose interest, and you can only take so much violence before you lose your taste for the story. The screenplay shines when it examines secrecy between married couples, and lets the characters work it out for themselves. But the third act of the film disposes a great deal of character development for standard Hollywood Action scenes. The action scenes, while technically well executed, become tedious. I was rooting for this film, because it started off as a fun and smart film. I lost it when it stretched the material and launched into cookie cutter cliché action scenes. "Bourne Identity" had action scenes that represented real peril to the lead characters, but M&MS has action scenes that make it obvious that the lead characters are more like cartoons.By the third act, my enthusiasm waned. I was surprised when I walked out to find the movie was only 2 hours long, because the way the second half of this film dragged made it feel more like 2 and ½ hours. I wouldn't say I felt duped, thinking the gimmick of this film would've been handled in a smarter fashion. It's just that the number implausibilities caught up with me to the point that I had to reject the entire film. Wait for the DVD.

Stupid, unsexy and boring. The actors are unbelievable and basically just pose through the whole film. Vince Vaugh is unbelievably irritating, Pitt and Jolie are their usual bland selves; it's like watching mannequin robots for two hours. I guess my problem is that I have never found either Jolie or Pitt particularly sexy or interesting. One word to describe the script: childish. Apparently the old myth that all the Hollywood films are made for 12 year old girl really are true. Although this time the target audience seems to be a bit more precise: domesticated wives and husbands with the emotional capacity of a 12 year old girl who think it's titillating to equate marriage with competing hit men.And yeah, it seems the guy who wrote the script is the same one who managed to destroy X- Men III (along with Zak Penn and Rattner). So no wonder. From now on I really have to remember to avoid anything done by them. The stars I give are for the technical quality of the film which is pretty good. But that's given for a production of this magnitude.I can't believe I lost two hours of my life watching this bland plastic fest.

Pathetic

posted on 06 Aug 2009

I came to theater expecting it to be a great movie, but to the horror of me the movie was pathetic, i mean even saying pathetic would be appreciation for this movie.I watch only Hollywood movies because i like the way they portrait the lives of people which is quite realistic and much commendable compared to non realistic movies of Bollywood, but this movie is so bad that even Bollywood can't think of making such mediocre "Husband-wife thriller", i had no courage that i could watch full movie and after an hour i left the theatre.Sorry Brad Pitt, your movie is a complete loser.I don't why did u think of making such movie which has nothing in it, poor story, bad acting and even worse direction, everything just doesn't seem to work for this movie.

Sleek, but predictable romantic action comedy

posted on 27 Jul 2009

This is a concept designed to get couples to agree on which movie to watch: action and Angelina Jolie for the guy, romantic comedy and Brad Pitt for the girl. The action sequences are good - well executed, funny and often beautiful. The chemistry between the leads is great. However, the movie's also entirely forgettable as the story is too predictable for words, there's next to no characterization and the thinnest of plots. All in all, while it's not something you need to see in the theater, it still provides some laughs and entertaining action scenes. Recommended for a hang-over video session.

Pitt? Jolie? Brody makes this movie for me.

Wacky and thrilling premise (husband and wife discover they're rival assassins), helmed by Doug Liman and starring two of Hollywood's Sexiest Stars... how could it fail? At the box office, not really. Artistically, not so hard. The trouble with "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" is that what is supposed to be a romantic action comedy is lacking in the romance (in part because Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie don't really connect on screen - Pitt is in dull mode throughout, and I've never been a member of the Jolie Barmy Army; anyone of the female cast from "Sin City" wipes the floor with her), not entirely successful with the action - only in the third act is there any kind of adrenaline, and even then not much - and absolutely DOA with the comedy. "The War of the Roses" took the husband-and-wife-trying-to-kill-each-other premise and did a far better, edgier and funnier job.To be fair, the movie was cursed from the beginning by being produced by Akiva Goldsman - and know this: unless the least deserving Oscar-winner in recent memory makes a movie with someone I really, really like, this is absolutely the last movie I will see with his name on it (after "Constantine" - which I admit I couldn't get through - "Starsky & Hutch," "Deep Blue Sea," "Lost in Space," "A Time to Kill," "Batman Forever" and "Practical Magic" enough is enough) - and written by the man who wrote "xXx2: The Next Level." What saved the show for me was the performance of Adam Brody as a spy who proves to be the key to the whole business; he isn't on screen long, but he always delivers the goods when he is. But otherwise, as Summer Roberts would say - "Ew."

What a big disappointment!

When I saw the trailer of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" I thought it would be great and exciting. But when I saw it at the cinema, all was very different. The first 30 minutes were good and a bit entertaining, but the rest was really boring. I saw it at the cinema with one friend, and he was all the time enjoying the film. But I was bored, very very bored, and the only thing I could do was disturbing him because I didn't know what I could do! Is the film bad?? Yes,it is. It's not a movie you would like to see more than once. The script is pathetic and the argument is silly. Only the good thing of this film was the couple of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who do a good job. They're not so bad in the film. But I can tell that this film is the most disappointment of 2005. No doubt.I don't want actors like Angelina and Brad to act in films like this one. I consider this movie a typical American crap.

Plot? What Plot? Who did they work for anyway?

posted on 25 Jul 2009

I really didn't like this movie at all. I found it absurd and missing vital ingredients like for instance a plot. So which opposing bodies are Mr and Mrs Smith actually meant to be working for? They can't both be on the side of good. Why is it that no one in the movie seems to get killed but there are bullets flying everywhere from every direction and why when they are vastly outnumbered.... etc.. etc.. This is True Lies meets Prizzi's Honor with a smidgen of James Bond, but all done very very badly. Relies heavily on special effects to make up for huge gaps in the plot. Very shallow characterization, ludicrous situations, unsatisfactory ending. This movie will not win any Oscars!

A Pleasurable Trip

I like modern action-movies, particularly since they often intermingle with other genres. In this case, comedy and romance. The real trick (which was the major problem during the 80's and 90's) is to make the genres mix seamless, like the action can't be without the comedy and the other way around.Mr. & Mrs. Smith succeeds in this. It is fun, fast and pleasant. So, the problem with it. I've never been a huge Jolie-fan. I feel she only found her true character-style in Girl Interrupted, but everything else is just wrong (especially the Lara Croft: Tom Raider-films, in which she really, really sucks). OK, she is not a disaster i Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but you can feel she is not having any fun.So the grade only reaches an average, and only because of this insanely overrated (both as an actress and as a beautiful? woman). But in all other departments this is a great film. I would have loved to have seen a more down-to-earth-woman in the role as Jane Smith. Brad Pitt (even though he happens to be a mega star, a hunk, a versatile big-time actor etc.) pulls off the "average-guy-part".

Summer Blockbuster You Can't Miss

Plot Summary: John & Jane Smith (Pitt&Jolie) have been living together as husband and wife for over five years when they notice that space has been wedging itself between them. Their little secrets have come to a close where running away from it, or each other is not an option. Hired assassins from different sources are now hired to kill each other. This action packed charmingly witty film will take you for a ride. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will amp you up and energize the screen with their mega watt celebrity power and charm. Review: I must admit that I was surprised at how much I enjoyed watching this movie. The star cast pulled me in to see the film and I am glad it did. Angelina Jolie, beautiful as ever, convincingly demonstrated once again how well she looks handling a gun. The hunky Brad Pitt also proves himself as an action star. An added bonus is Vince Vaugh, friend to John Smith. You can always count on Vaughn for laughs. This movie is packed with many action shots, explosions after explosions, car chases, gun shots, falling buildings, climbing, hanging, running, fighting what more can one expect. My favorite scene was the main fight scene with Jolie and Pitt - look out for it very nice touch.

Action packed, brilliant casting, unbelievable chemistry, humor - HAVE I SAID ENOUGH??

posted on 23 Jul 2009

From the very first scene, seeing Brad and Angelina receiving couples therapy, the chemistry between the 2 of them is so conspicuous and unbelievable. Once the opening credits have ended, your intuition leads you to believe that Mr and Mrs Smith has great potential...and you are certainly NOT misleaded.I caught this movie today with a bunch of friends, and it was unequivocal that along with myself all of my other friends enjoyed this movie to a great extent. The degree to which the humour has been integrated with the action is perfect. Angelina Jolie's seductive looks, and feminist 'chick' attitude make her perfect for the role - and to match this perfection, Brad Pitt very wisely made his decision to re-join the cast. I don't think i have ever seen such good chemistry between characters - and though in all the endless Oscar nominated and winning movies, their producers boast about 'chemistry',none are exactly conspicous. Brad and Angelina - are brilliant - and its a movie worth watching again. The supporting cast seem weak as opposed to the protagonists. Vince Vaughn was cast for even more comic relief, and to a certain extent overacted and seemed unwanted! Adam Brody who would have shown up on set thinking he was on the set of 'The OC' gave a Seth Cohen-ish performance, and Kerry Washington took on opposite role when compared to the performance she gave in 'Ray.' I had such a great time at the theatre just laughing at every other scene - i don't see why critics gave this movie a fairly low rating.

Put this movie into the correct genre before you watch!

This movie is pretty much a light comedy with heavy action.I'm seeing a lot of comments on this movie that indicate folks either loved it or hated it... Me - I'm realistically a little above the middle :)People who were expecting to see Brad and Angeline knock out some sort of intellectual thriller were vastly disappointed - and you should be.People who set their minds on glide (some do not have to make this setting), were very happy with it. This movie is not "da bomb", but I think it was entertaining.Good: There is fairly good chemistry with Brad and Angelina. The playful banter between the two was fun. Enough excitement and plot deception to keep you watching.Bad: At the end, there were too many over-the-top action sequences (the mini-van, the concrete shack, etc...). This pretty much follows mainstream action movies being pumped out by the film industry these days - "build the action up to an unrealistic climax, trump the last action flick that was just put out" *sigh*Some pretty cheesy lines were given during highly intense moments. I found them to be somewhat annoying; others, though, may find these funny.But... since I pretty much know that over-the-top is the case for 99% of action movies these days, and this was handled in a fairly humorous way, I found it enjoyable.

No heart and soul in film

posted on 13 Jul 2009

Movie is balancing between "True lies" comedy/action type and reemphasized marriage drama. Brad and Angelina are with no doubt great performers but it seems that in way this combination of genres any actor would be confused. Or to come down to ground level: How you can expect from a character who is killing people for living (lots of people and with no regrets) to be involved in real family drama? Or how can you believe them that they are real (so you can connect with a character in drama)? It's a pity that chemistry which is glowing and obvious between this fine actors was not being covered with a story and directing better. So either director should stick to "try lies" type and forget about drama or vise versa. At the end when you going out of cinema a bitter bit stops in your throat that this could be better. Someone should write a nice script for this Brad/Angelina duo and directed Academy Award performance which they could obviously give. Some English drama or love story but with real characters in which we could believe and not this summer hit killing everyone around kind of thing. To conclude kids will probably love the action, fans of Brad/Angelina would probably wait for DVD with more nude scenes and some of us will hope that they will match up again in a real movie.
