Quiet loner Chris (Chris Sharp) gets an invitation to a 'Murder Party' on Halloween, and goes in the costume of the black knight from "Monty Python & the Holy Grail." Unbeknownst to him, when he arrives, he finds that it really IS a murder party, and he's the real murder victim at the hands of several struggling artists! However, things look up for him when the artists turn on one another, causing much bloodshed, death, and dismemberment in their path. Will Chris survive the murder party? I can see why some people like this film, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. It was humorous enough and gory enough, but just the overall feeling of it wasn't exciting to me.

Murder Party

posted on 12 Aug 2009

Insane goremedy about an unfortunate average-joe who discovers an invite at his feet on the sidewalk to a "murder party" on Halloween. Expecting a Halloween-themed costume party, Chris(Chris Sharp)finds this an then some with a gathering of eccentric artistes who plan to use him as their focal inspiration for an extreme art piece. The group will murder him in some grotesque way yet undetermined as Chris is tackled by them and tied to a chair, bound and gagged, he awaits in horror as they discuss and delay his artistic demise..he's to be a sacrificial lamb as the artists compete for a grant promised to the one who impresses their mentor, Alexander(Alex Barnett)the most. But, as the night approaches the witching hour(..the time appointed for Chris' death by Alexander), unforeseen circumstances arise and Chris watches as those among him fall prey to their own frailties, egos & insecurities, with the scene actually turning into a legitimate murder party. Alexander brings to the party a drug-dealing foreigner with a gun named Zycho(Bill Tangradi)who has a barbiturate which works as a truth serum and doping agent..this will bring out the buried secrets which will compel murderous acts along with a very unstable painter modeling his costume after the baseball furies from "The Warriors" who needed such a place to unleash his hidden desires for bloodshed. While the graphic violence rears it's ugly head at the end, most of this film is a satire on artists and their pursuit for achieving success. Chris is a blue-collar product of the working class who makes the fateful decision(..probably taking that step at doing something unpredictable which throws a potential cog in the wheel of his daily routine of getting up, going to work, coming home, and watching television)of entering a world very different from his own. But, as the film culminates towards the violence, it's an explosion with poor Chris experiencing the madness first-hand. I think many will find this unique, refreshing and different than the usual horror coming out these days, while others will be repelled, disturbed and sickened by the dark humorous situations that occur as the film continues. As far as the gore is concerned, director Jeremy Saulnier cheats a bit, not always having his camera hone in on the violent acts(..probably due to budgetary constraints, and perhaps not wanting to have his film too gratuitous). But, there are some rather unsettling moments of violence that achieve quite a visceral feel such as when one sets his werewolf mask on fire(..trying to light a cigarette) with parts of the rubber melting into his face as he attempts to peel it away and the use of a chainsaw to the face. Bullets shot into the heads of certain victims as blood drools and wicked swings of a baseball bat also play into the violent climax. There's even an ax attack on artists during an exhibit performance.I'm pretty sure many will be wondering whether or not(..as they are watching the film)this will ever have murders during the party because the director builds up to it by exposing the artists and their MANY faults as they seem to delay the inevitable. I found this amusing because when the violence ensues it rarely stops, until Chris attempts to flee the maniac left standing. The film is, in my opinion, quite tongue-and-cheek and shouldn't be taken too seriously. If looked at improperly, this film might be quite unpleasant viewing.

Worst. Movie. Ever.

I wish we could do negative stars, because I can't believe anyone gave this over a one.The "plot" of this movie is that some loser goes to a "murder" party sponsored by some avant garde artists vying for grant money. He is promptly tied up and threatened with death which the artists will take pictures of.Now, mind you, the NEA does some weird stuff with no artistic value, but this would be even below their standards. After copious amounts of drugs are consumed, the "artists" start turning on each other, until the victim escapes and is being chased by the last two survivors. There is nothing to redeem this movie. It isn't scary, it isn't funny, and it is unwatchable. The sad thing is that I forgot I had it and got a late fee from Blockbuster, which is really adding insult to injury.

A n Old Jersey Guy's Idea Of The Brooklyn Art Scene

posted on 07 Jun 2009

This movie is a real time waster. It has decent production values & a few OK performances (the lead victim & the photographer) but it is undermined by a truly awful performance by the art "patron" & a ludicrous script. The film has a "Hee Haw" attitude towards the Brooklyn art scene & seems like something a clueless old fart would've written for a skit on the "Sonny & Cher Show" back in the 1970s. The irony here is that if the writer & director were better artists they may have pulled this off. Instead it's a stale comedy that isn't funny & a horror/thriller that isn't suspenseful. Even the soundtrack is a joke--what self respecting NYC artist listens to speed metal?

I laughed out Loud more than any comedy in years

The movie was hilarious. Not the kinda goofy jokes so much like you'd see in a SNL movie. But situational black comedy that is very sharply orchestrated with brilliant dialogue and creative situations. Like when the whole group shoots up Sodium Penethol (Truth Syrum) and gets into a groovy discussion about their personal lives, it was realistic and hilarious at the same time, and really helps you enjoy the characters. Its also very well shot, clear, lighting, audio is great too. It doesn't look Amateur at all. The acting was as good as any Will Ferrel comedy, and better than most of the Hollywood trash bin comedies. My favorite LOL moment though was when the Leader guy is high and looks around the room, notices the guy who confessed under the truth drug that he's Bi-Sexual and gets this kinky grin on his face, and then it jumps to him banging the guy in the puppet gallery where he'd previously had the Lexy girl. That was was just too funny, if Id have been drinking it would have come out my nose. There really were more LOL moments in this movie than I've seen in a long time, and I usually don't laugh at movies. Comedies I typically think suck all around, especially the ones that come out of Bollywood. The funniest flicks I often find are B-Movies that go straight to video. Another one VERY much like this movie is Satan's Little Helper. I really loved that one too. The movie got a little boring during the chase scene. Or about 10 mins of it. When they get to the big art party though it quickly got fun again! This is a must scene party movie to watch with a bunch of your mates.

Nice idea...

"Murder Party" has potential but in my opinion the creators didn't seem to be able to get their idea work for a long feature - perhaps it would do fine for a short one. The plot development did not convince me and the exposition of protagonists in my point of view got too short. This could be one reason why it was hard for me to care about these characters. Furthermore "Murder Party" tries hard to be crazy while the output still feels ordinary. Meanwhile the horror comedy loses out of sight how to tell it's story and during the last third (that took quiet too long) I only thought, "come on, please get it to an end !". Apart from that it's an okay low budget production but you shouldn't expect too much.In a short: Some nice moments but not enough ideas to make the clock tick for 80 minutes. Not bad but not good either !

likable first feature

How seriously this horror-comedy should be taken as a commentary on the art world is underlined with the only specific reference I caught to actual cultural practice, a rant that invokes "Jackson Pollock...and that Scorsese movie...with that guy." By which he obviously means Nick Nolte in New York Stories, right? Although by the time the battered geek returns home from the crazy streets of subcultural NYC in the final scene, I thought maybe they meant Griffin Dunne, because there's a lot of After Hours in here. A horror-comedy about murder as performance art, this movie has pacing problems; the slow build becomes a drag, and then suddenly everyone's dead in thirty seconds. Not all of the many clever ideas are well executed, the script's stabs at character development need to be improved or abandoned, and rather than surprising us with alternating funny-scary it sometimes sits too long in the middle. But a bit like Alex Barnett's reverse-Macgyver closet shtick can carry you a long way, and ultimately this is a likable and enjoyable movie whose energy and invention tend to balance out its flaws. I hope this longstanding ensemble, whose first feature this is, keeps learning, improving, and getting along.

NOT Just a Great Indie Movie- A Great Movie PERIOD!

posted on 15 Aug 2008

I began watching this film intending to count the hack plot devices and script clichés. In 5 minutes I was lost in what turned out to be a wry, witty comic horror gem. The premise is surprisingly fresh & slightly farcical. A hapless schmoe finds himself the center of a bizarre plot in which a group of hack artists plan to kill him in the name of art. Bungling chases, attempted murder, actual murder, sex, drugs, rock n' roll, & accidental maiming by fire are just a few of the mishaps and perpetrations which follow. This is offbeat, dark comedy at it's finest. The effects- fantastic. The script- witty and engaging. The story unfolded and progressed at a pleasing clip. The acting, usually the bane of the indie movie, is great. This award-winning movie is 90 minutes well-spent. There's many surprises & laugh out loud moments. I liked it so much, I bought my own copy.

Why so many negative reviews?

posted on 14 Jul 2008

I saw that movie about a year ago and still occasionally think about it and chuckle. Needless to say I really enjoyed this and got a kick out of a lot of the references. Being an art student myself I can somewhat relate to how the art scene works and in some cases it's pretty spot on to the movie. I was actually shocked to see how many people supposedly hated this movie. This is not only a really original idea for a horror movie, but it also has interesting characters, nice gore and effects and some really good laughs. More than can be said about most horror movies. I actually just ordered the DVD (I rarely buy DVDs) and I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie again (I hope it's uncut).

Goofy, gory, kind of fun in a weird way

This is the story of a "Joe Average" type, a kind of nerdy guy, Chris, who finds an invitation on Halloween to a "Murder Party" and is stupid enough to make a costume (and some pumpkin bread to take along) and go. And, it really IS a party of that sort, and this poor schmuck is the guest of honor. A roomful of nut-case psycho artists have decided to kill someone in the name of art, only things take a turn for the worse when the biggest loony of them all, Alexander, shows up. Of course, most of these artist types are no strangers to substance abuse so despite being tied up at least a couple times, Chris still manages to get loose. Eventually, tension builds so much among these artist types that turning against each other and while Chris does manage to get away he seems to have a couple of the angriest survivors pursuing him through that particular area of town and even through a few not-quite-as-life-threatening Halloween parties. One of the pursuers is a young man who drunkenly tried to light a cigarette while wearing a rubber mask & now has part of the mask burned to his face, which I suppose would make MOST people irritable. Unfortunately for the OTHER party goers none of Chris's pursuers seem terribly picky about who they hack to bits. This has some pretty good deadpan humor to it, and some just plain goofiness, but when the horror stuff kicks in it's also pretty well done, considering that this is a pretty low budget film, it seems. I had heard lots about this & was expecting to be disappointed but I wasn't, this is a real oddball little horror/comedy. 8 out of 10.

Surrogate Sense of Shame...

posted on 14 Jun 2008

A Surrogate sense of shame… That is the only kind of sentiment "Murder Party" evoked with me. I am literally feeling embarrassed in writer/director Jeremy Saulnier's place for even daring to release such an utterly retarded and infuriatingly dumb excuse for a horror motion picture. What, does really everyone think they are capable of making horror movies nowadays? This is exactly the type of rubbish to give the entire genre a bad name. For some reason most reviews for "Murder Party" are enthusiast and praising. I figure these critics were either somehow involved in the production or received illicit commissions of some sort, because there's really nothing positive about this movie. At the time of watching, my mate and I were so much under the influence of alcohol and soft-drugs that we even would have found "Not Without My Daughter" hysterical, yet we didn't laugh once at "Murder Party". Well, with the notable exception of one gag (the lead character gathering a whole collection of potential weapons only to then just drop them upon seeing his opponents) but that hardly justifies the price of a purchase. The gags are overlong and often ridiculously over-the-top, the stereotypical characters are insufferable to even gaze at, the gore is really nothing special and each and every tiny aspect about the production is handled incompetently. The lead guy Chris is a big lonesome nerd who finds a personal invitation to a Halloween party on the streets, and since his life is so miserably pathetic, he decides to go and even bring pumpkin bread as a present. He ends up amongst a gathering of the world's biggest lunatics posing as artists and solely invited a random stranger to kill him/her in the name of art. But hey, since they're all crazy, they actually begin killing off each other and forget about the dork in his homemade robot costume. Even with a running time of barely 80 minutes, "Murder Party" outstays its welcome with approximately 75 minutes and it's honestly about time young and ambitious filmmakers realize horror and slapstick aren't supposed to mix, and especially not by clueless amateurs.

Best movie I've seen in a long time!

This movie is one of my new favorite movies! It has the plot of a horror movie, but plenty of comedy! Murder Party has a really unique feel to it that is hard to find in any other movies. I have watched it 4 times since I first got it a week ago, and it still keeps me entertained! The first time I watched this was with a bunch of friends, and the movie kept everyone entertained, and nobody had a negative word about it. The actors all did a really good job, especially considering their lack of experience (at least from whats listed in IMDb), and the movie was written and directed really great! I would love to see more movies from this directer in the near future! 2 Thumbs up!

Sweet creeping zombie Jesus, this movie RAWKS!

First of all, if you are a fan of independent cinema at all, and especially if you are a fan of horror/comedy hybrids, don't read another word: just go see this movie. Now. Seriously, I'll wait for ya, right here. ... Back yet? Pretty sweet, huh? You're welcome!Where to begin? This is one of my favorite independent horror films of all time. Not as dialog-driven as the original The Wicker Man (1973) nor nearly as bloody as Evil Dead 2, but in it's own way just as unique and remarkable. The blurb on the DVD cover describes it as "Napoleon Dynamite meets the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre," which is pretty good--there definitely is some chainsaw violence in this, no surprise if you've seen the cover art!--but I think a better way to put it would be "The Breakfast Club on acid." ("Art School Confidential" meets "Friday the Thirteenth" also comes close. "Reservoir Dogs" meets "Halloween"? I'll stop now.)Although this is definitely a legitimate, high-quality horror film, I should state: this film will not please impatient gore-hounds. This film has a story to tell, one driven by character development, and it moves at a fairly deliberate pace. (As follows: first act starts slow, second act picks up the pace, third act really books. Sound familiar?) By the film's conclusion, some extraordinarily gruesome violence will have splashed across the screen, but that's not really the point of the film.Murder Party is all about a man named Chris and his pet cat, Sir Lancelot.Well, not exactly. This is the story of a Halloween party gone horribly, horribly wrong. Our hero, the nebbish traffic cop Chris (who does, in fact, own a cat named Sir Lancelot), unthinkingly accepts a random invitation to something billed as a murder party. "Seriously--anybody stupid enough to show up to something called a 'murder party' deserves to die!" Indeed. But things go horribly wrong when...You're not still reading this without having seen the film, are you? That would be stupid, reading any further without having experienced this thing yourself, because HEREIN BE SPOILERS! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!Okay, here we go: the hosts of the murder party are art students whose charm and pretension is matched only by their amorality and ineptitude. The premise of this film is rather like Stephen Dorff's line from the great Cecil B. Demented: "We make art until somebody dies." I'd write more, but I'm late for a hearty dinner of milk and candy corn. You know how it is.highlights: -cinematography (both well-composed static shots & beautiful steady-cam stuff) -makeup (best chainsaw effect in the history of film, i kid you not!) -ultimate truth-or-dare (sodium pentothal-fueled Breakfast Club homage) -dialog ("Sky just died.", "Dildoes!", "I didn't sign up for 'Second-Degree Assault' party!", "Stupid shoes!" and "This is gross!" are personal faves) ...and, best of all... -the "MacGuyver scene" (escape from the closet--too funny for words!)Long live Murder Party! Long live the Lab of Madness!!

Thank-you to the Creaters!

So, I rented this film from Blockbuster last night with really no expectations at all. I just wanted something different. I can honestly say, that it was I got. How fun and refreshing it was to watch a movie that I couldn't predict. This was hilarious, tense, bloody (in a fun way) and very unpredictable. I found myself laughing out loud several times. Some of the timing in the dialog was just perfect. If you can appreciate a movie for what it is and are sick and tired of the "Hollywood Blockbusters", then this is a film for you.I also greatly enjoyed the special features on the disk, highlighting some of the film makers other movies from childhood. It's amazing to me that this is these guys first full length. I can't wait for more! I'd love to see a sequel!

Astonishingly Witty little Black Comedy that reveals talent & intelligence

posted on 05 Feb 2008

Having just read a review that describes this as a "Jerseyites view of the NY art scene", that is both astonishingly patronising (the whole point of the movie, idiot!)and unbelievably "jejeune" (wink), I have to say how much I love this film."Indie" cinema has been relegated to either a kickstart for the career of a middling celebrity, or a vacuum for self referentialism or schlock."Murder Party" is neither: it is witty, genuinely left field, and kind of touching. It is black-as-black comedy rarely performed well nowadays.A hapless, lonely but genuinely nice, traffic warden on Halloween gets captured by a group of desparado wannabe celeb artists, after responding to a "murder party" advert. They desperately want to impress a local art impresario,Alexander, by performing a murder on camera as art. I will not ruin this for you but I will tempt: the rest involves sex, drugs, a dog called hellhammer "who is part dingo", unrequited love, a Belarussian drug dealer, a fry cook, sodium pentathol and "truth and dare", and of all things, vinegar. Not tempting enough?;a brilliant reference to "The Warriors" and a Horror mask that becomes reality...note "electric chainsaw".It stabs pretension and Genre expectation with equal abandon. Closest thing to John Waters I've seen for years. This really needs to be seen. Well acted and incredibly well made. Oh yeah, its also incredibly funny. Low budget with few locations or tricks, and shot on DV so most DVD companies passed, and it was released in the UK by a company famous for SOV tackathons. Not fair, it's brilliant and better than anything Kevin Smith has done for a decade. If You see it on the shelf, Make it a cult.

put this one in your collection next to "female trouble" and "art school confidential" as another hilarious send up of the absurdities of the hipster art world. a must see for jaded crabs from Williamsburg to echo park!!!the lab of madness seems to me to be a group of talented and enthusiastic filmmakers who aren't afraid to have some "dumb fun" at the expense of those who deserve to be dressed down.i'd be willing to bet that they appreciate the brilliance of Stanley Kubrick and Marlon Brando but get just as excited about Kane hodder and Tobe hooper.also, check out their short film "crabwalk" it's a slice of life piece about a knucklehead looking for a lousy job.

I normally don't like it when horror movies try to be funny

posted on 05 Nov 2007

The difference with this film and others similar is that they normally are not funny. I don't think I can watch another "Scary Movie". This movie was honestly different. I watched it with one of my best friends and we couldn't believe how much fun we had. On the bad side the plot is pretty basic and straight forward, there is no "crazy twists". This film simply is what it is. Don't get me wrong, it's still a decent storyline, but its the humor that makes it worth watching. I personally rarely even laugh at standard comedies like "superbad", but this movie was great. Here is an example, they are all telling truthful secrets about themselves and one guy says "I once wrote Santa a letter asking him to make me not Jewish anymore" its just random/bizzar and funny, its a must see! Watch this movie! Watch it if you have a sense of humor, and watch it if you have a group of friends with a sense of humor, you will not regret it!!!!!!!!!! BTW this was sorta a horror movie day, and out of the 5 horror movies we watched this was by far the best!

Refreshing Horror Comedy

posted on 30 Oct 2007

Well done. Not just a horror movie that gets laughs from the horror gags. The humor was steady throughout, if you like dark comedy. I found the story to be refreshing as it doesn't "keyframe" its story with cliché. Whether it be Hollywood formula, cinematic guidelines, director's guild tribal knowledge, or actor's schizophrenia, this movie doesn't rely on these tried and true methods. It's shock value is in the twist of fate scenario(s), and the absurdity of human behavior. The gore content was only at a level as what was necessary, not over the top. Some may disagree here, but think about all the zombie movies. Okay, the "art" room may have been a little graphic, emphasizing "little", but it was... "art", eh? Even the attempted gore had humorous tones. I didn't laugh out loud... but it was funny! For those of you who like dark comedy, horror movies and action, and want something new and refreshing, watch Murder Party.Oh, yeah, after watching it you'll learn that even a "cat" will understand that the master has had a really, really bad day.

Let me address the naysayers: Go back to your mainstream CGI releases, you're not wanted here, you're morons. Sit at your 13 inch televisions in your mom's basement, pop in Underworld (your idea of true horror) into your playstation2 and sit there and rot. This movie was brilliant. Before I prattle on, let me ask you a question: Have you ever seen Bad Taste (1987), Peter Jackson's (Lord of the Rings) 1st official film? This movie (Bad Taste) was created under similar circumstances as Murder Party, self funded with buddies and volunteers bringing it all together and it really works. The opening sequences, which were filmed before the movie was even written, were very good, fitting and set the stage. I appreciated the camera angles and opening score. As ridiculous as this sounds, I liked the movie right there and then. The opening sequences are more important than often given credit.Reviews that critique a film, scene for scene, are tedious, additionally; giving too much away isn't a good thing either. Therefore, I am going cover a few select morsels and expound on my over all message (which is: See This Movie)Our lonely guy and champion (Chris Sharp, producer) is ideal, his portrayal is convincing and his appearance fits. The geeky glasses he wears were actually the ones he wore in 7th grade. Our protagonist stumbles across an invitation on the sidewalk (great steady camera work, while following the invite blow down the walkway). Our homely hero believes this is fate and decides to accommodate the invite. In preparation, the making of pumpkin bread and a cardboard suit of armor was priceless as was the standoff with Sir Lancelot (Snooty Puff) the cat. Seriously, aren't you intrigued yet? Why aren't you queuing this movie already? After a most entertaining commute, via New York public transportation, our unsuspecting meter maid arrives as the guest of honor and is quickly accosted. The other main players, whose characters are artists of various sorts; Macon (Macon Blair), Paul (Paul Goldblatt, make-up, special effects), Bill (William Lacey), Lexi (Stacy Rock) and Sky (Skei Saulnier, producer, Jeremy's wife) are passing the time waiting to see if someone was stupid enough to show. It is never explained whether the invite was lost by another, thrown to the wind or whatever; this does nothing to damage the plot though, as it is fate we attribute, regardless of the path. The whole premise of this Murder Party is to A. Impress Alexander, an alleged art aficionado in an attempt to win his favor and accompanying grant money (more on him later). B. To commit a murder, utilizing each artist's creativity to transform this grizzly deed into something profoundly artistic. I know, sounds shaky, however, Jeremy and his clan pull it off superbly. I mean, come on, there are people that believe embryos encased in earrings are artistic, this could really happen (Especially in New York). There are a series of scenes that follow that are excellent, involving blunders, absurd (absurd in a most entertaining way) dialogues and the accidental death of one of the hosts, which I'll expound upon. Sky, decides to eat the pumpkin bread Chris was kind enough to bring, not noticing the raisins within. Being allergic, this resulted in a fall in which her head strikes a wicked looking spike-like object on the floor. Jeremy (Director and Skei's husband) explains that her demise was imperative early on in the film due the necessity of having her presence on the set, beauty and brains, gotta love it. After which, additional characters are introduced; Alexander (Alexander Barnett) and his Polish henchman Zycho (Bill Tangradi, associate producer). Alexander is over the top, he has a screen presence that oozes half-witted arrogance and I mean this as a complement, Alexander's performance is excellent. It was stated that he is presently a landscaper (within the DVD extras). I am not sure if this was a joke, if it is true, what a waste. William Lacey's performance is perfect, seriously, I was wondering if he went off the meds for the shoot. I don't mean that disparagingly, it was very convincing. If my critique has done nothing for you, as far as motivating you to see the film, let this be a factor; William Lacey's performance is one of the more realistic, rage induced portrayals I have seen in a long time. I will say no more on this; hence I give too much away. Macon, running around, searching for an outlet to plug in his electric chainsaw was classic, I will never cut wood with the same frame of mind again, Bravo!Another worthy mention (if I mentioned every scene I had intended, we would need an intermission) is the special effects (way to go Paul), specifically the burnt wolf, this was so horrific, I loved it. while filming, a set designer (if I remember right) had his daughter on hand, at this scene; she broke down and cried, it was that ghastly. The movie progresses, with smart and humorous dialogue, chases ensue, truth serum is used, a dog eats a bag of crank, baseball bats, chainsaws, axes, demises are met, Including a room of ½ naked, body painted artsy types and a twist (twisted) ending, not in a "Sixth Sense" way, more so as a "who is really the bad guy" kind of thing.I don't want to give the ending away, and I don't want to ruin the movie with too much description. The message here is that if you love Indi films with passionate, budding talent, this is the film for you. Furthermore, I can see this film becoming a cult classic, Halloween must-see.When Peter Jackson made Bad Taste in 1987, he too was met with much criticism; however, those guys are still in their mom's basement. See the movie, you won't regret it.Happy Horrors
