There's being a kid. There's being an adult. And then there's that year in between.
Vada Sultenfuss has a holiday coming up, and an assignment: to do and essay on someone she admires and has never met. She decides she wants to do an assignment on her mother, but quickly realises she knows very little about her. She manages to get her father to agree to let her go to LA to stay with her Uncle Phil and do some research on her mother. Once in LA, she finds herself under the protection of Nick, the son of Phil's girlfriend, who at first is very annoyed at losing his holidays to escort a hick *girl* around town. However, he soon becomes more involved in the difficult search.

Original My Girl: Ok Second My Girl: Much, Much Better!!!
posted on 29 Apr 2008My Girl 2 was much better than the original My Girl. This one goes more in depth with the story focusing more on Anna Chlumsky, or Vada Sultenfuss as she's known in the movie. Vada is assigned by her English teacher to write a poem about someone who had achieved something and someone who was a complete stranger to her. She picked her mother. Vada goes to Los Angeles despite her father's firm decision to not let her go. Throughout the movie, she is searching for answers about her mother. What was she like? The big mystery she must solve is to figure out why there was a date written on a paper lunch bag in her box of her mother's things. Will Vada succeed in finding answers to her questions? Will she find out things she didn't know before? The only way to find out is by WATCHING THIS EXCELLENT MOVIE! DON'T MISS OUT!
Angeline Ball worth the entire film
posted on 23 Aug 2007I watched this film for the simple reason that I (along with everyone else in this country) fell in love with My Girl. The sequel was almost a complete disappoinment, except for the five minutes at the end where Angeline Ball as Veda's mother Maggie Muldovin plays the life loving, free-spirited, angel that makes the whole movie worthwhile. Hearing her sing "Smile" makes My Girl 2 worth watching again and again.
Excellent sequel to a very touching and funny comedy/drama/romance
posted on 26 Mar 2007MY GIRL 2, in my opinion, is an excellent sequel to a very touching and funny comedy/drama/romance. If you ask me, Vada (Anna Chlumsky) looked very beautiful in the dress she wore on the final day of her trip. Also, I thought that she and Nick (Austin O'Brien) made a cute couple. However, his mother, Rose (Christine Ebersole), was a little snobby. You'll have to see the movie if you want to know why. Before I wrap this up, I must say that the costumes were well-designed, the production design was good, and the performances were top-grade. In conclusion, this movie really touched me and made me feel good, and I highly recommend it if you're a fan of Dan Aykroyd, Anna Chlumsky, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christine Ebersole, or Austin O'Brien.
Did "My Girl" need to have a sequel?
posted on 23 Mar 2007SpoilersDid "My Girl" need to have a sequel? The answer is no. It did not. This film is proof. It involves the annoying girl from the annoying original going to live with another annoying family for the summer, or some annoying plot like that. She finds an annoying boyfriend (her second cousin - eww!), her annoyingly boring father and cries in an annoying fashion. Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis said yes - to THIS?! Annoying film. I've seen it many times on television and I hate it very much. 1.5/5 stars -John Ulmer
Confused About Identity
posted on 18 Mar 2007"My Girl 2" continues the story of Vada Sultenfuss and her family, set two or so years on from the original. It's a pretty good sequel, I thought.
Vada (Anna Chlumsky) is a little older and a little more sophisticated these days, it seems. She's not just writing poetry, she's reading it, her favorite poet being a certain Alfred Biedermeier. Her father's (Dan Aykroyd's) new wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) is due to have a baby, and soon Vada will be a big sister. In between school and home, she's trying to figure out boys, but hasn't quite got there yet.
At school, Vada is given an assignment. She has to write an essay on someone who she admires and has never met. She decides to write it on her mother, who died while Vada was still a baby. Vada knows virtually nothing about her mother, and decides to travel to California, where her mother went to school. She stays with her uncle, and with the help of a certain young man (Austin O' Brian) tracks down her mother's old friends. What Vada discovers shocks her, some of it disgusts and confuses her. Still, there are other discoveries that fill her with pride.
"My Girl 2" is a little different to the first. In terms of the style of the film, it looks a little fresher, a little less dusty. Perhaps it's the California scenery, I don't know. It still has that retro feel, which is good (the film is set in the 1970s). Also, it feels a little more subdued. Vada/Anna isn't quite as hyper as she was in the first film, if that makes sense. She's still a great actress, and a shame she hasn't really been in anything lately.
Rather than being in a set few places, like the first film was, "My Girl 2" goes from one place to another, which kind of alters the way the film flows. I wouldn't say there is a lot of chemistry between Anna Chlumsky's "love interest" Austin O'Brien, but considering they're almost cousins-in-law that's probably not such a bad thing.
If you enjoyed the first film, "My Girl 2" is definitely worth picking up. A nice continuation of the story. Shame there wasn't a "My Girl 3", I reckon.
Why Did This Film Ever Happen?
posted on 24 Feb 2007Films like "My Girl" are good not because they do well at the box office. They do well because of good writing, directing, strong performances and creative story-telling. "My Girl 2" lacks all those things. Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are left with token appearances as Anna Chlumsky (no longer cute at all) goes to California to find out about her late mother who died giving birth to her. Amazing yawner. A film with no business existing. Turkey (0 stars out of 5).
If you liked the first one, might as well see what happens
posted on 10 Aug 2006When you see the ad/movie in video store of MY GIRL 2 you're like, how on earth could they have made a sequel to such a great first movie. MY GIRL 2; of course like many other sequels don't live up to their originals but this sequel is touching and funny. 5/10
Not as bad as you might think
posted on 17 Jul 2006I'm not a big fan of any of the actors in this movie, particularly Austin O'Brien (Last Action Hero), and I didn't really like the original My Girl, but I have to say that this movie was better than expected. Something just touched me about Vada (Anna Chlumsky) trying to find out about the mother she never knew; it was honest and poignant. Singer/songwriter J.D. Souther does a nice turn as an old boyfriend of the mother. It's no masterpiece, to be sure, and is indeed slow and pointless in parts, but it's a pleasant diversion. I give it a (generous) 7.
Okay... not great, not exactly good, but... okay.
posted on 17 Jun 2006Dan Ackroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis and Anna Chlumsky return as Vada the hypercondriac flies to Los Angeles in hopes of finding out about the mother she never knew. This time, her boy friend (and then boyfriend) is played by Austin O'Brien (The Babysitters Club Movie) as Nick. Not in anyway as good as the original 1991 feature, 'My Girl', but okay as a family film. 4/10.
Good sequel of the first movie
posted on 31 Mar 2006This movie is a good sequel of the first movie. Still, I think that the first movie is better. SPOILER ALERT!! What I found a little bit annoying, was that Vada falls in love with her cousin-to-be. Okay, call me old-fashioned, but I'm not. It's the fact that I didn't found this a logic ending to this movie.
One of my favorites.
posted on 10 Mar 2006Yes, I know "My Girl 2" was a sequel. Yes, I know it is hard to follow the first movie. But the reason why I love this movie is because of the way we see Vada Sultenfuss has changed over the course of a few years. I loved seeing the sweet, innocent Vada become more of an adult & still remain likeable as a character. I also love Austin O'Brien in this movie; to date, he has not been in anything memorable, but I think the role of Nick was suited for him. I do find the relationship they have somewhat disenchanting, but it was what I was waiting for the whole movie. I think the plot was an interesting one, and Maggie Muldovan made this movie. It is, as another reviewer remarked, worth it to watch the movie countless times just to hear her sing "Smile." I love all of this movie, though, so I would advise seeing it.

My Baby Girl
posted on 03 May 2009This movie My Baby Girl both shows and tells parents, the children that they have are the most precious gifts that will ever be given to them. I saw this movie the first time in 1998
which was 2 years after my Daughter Sierra who was 5 years old had passed away from cancer and I fell in love with this movie. Both movies My Baby Girl and My Baby Girl 2 show parents that they should cherish the children they have, for as I said earlier there is nothing more precious that they ever will
receive.
