A relationship comedy with a cape on
posted on 29 Aug 2009When you get right down to it, there's really nothing much to say about this film (although I'll spend 5 paragraphs or so saying it). SPOILERS alert now. The plot, basically, involves romantically down-and-out architect Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson) - who seems to frustratingly attract crazy women -once again gaining an unstable girlfriend in Jenny Johnson (Uma Thurman), only to find out that her alter ego is the all-powerful superheroine G-Girl. Their romance goes well for a nano-second, but then Jenny's neurotic tendencies begin to surface and bug Matt, to the point where he shortly wants to end the relationship. Plus, he's been kind of in love with his co-worker, the cute and wholesome Hannah (Anna Faris).
However, as Matt feared, Jenny doesn't take the break-up too kindly and, well, we all know the saying about the woman scorned...and when the woman in question has super powers, oboy! Pretty soon, Matt is tending to holes in his ceilings, his car orbiting the planet, peril for his fish, embarassing disturbances at the job, and sharks in the bedroom. And, with G-Girl's nemesis, the dastardly but besotten Professor Bedlam (Eddie Izzard), lurking somewhere, this can't possibly end well, can it?
So, this concept is intriguing as the film tries to spin something different in the superhero genre. Or, put another way, this movie is more a relationship movie dressed up in comic book trappings. It does offer a certain limited insight on the sense of isolation superheroes feel as they go about doing their good deeds and how, sometimes, an act of kindness will engender from them feelings of surprise...and more. Jenny is first attracted to Matt because he helped her out in her civilian guise, something she's not used to as she's the one normally doing the saving. However, while it does have some modestly nifty special effects and trivial action sequences, MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND is, as befitting the movie title, predominantly a romantic comedy - but, alas, a bland one. Luke Wilson playing the regular dude part is affable enough, though not as likable or as charmingly laid back as his cooler brother Owen. Anna Faris is cute enough and huggable. Eddie Izzard is reserved here compared to his stand up comedy acts (check out his DRESSED TO KILL dvd, it's hilarious), and Rainn Wilson and Wanda Sykes are just annoying. It's lead actress Uma Thurman who's burdened with the most challenging role. Uma has to play Jenny/G-Girl as loony and dangerously and pettily spiteful yet still maintain a modicum of likability so the audience could be sympathetic enough to buy into the predictable resolution. I'm still not certain she pulled it off.
I'm not sure exactly what ingredients are missing here. The film certainly is energetic enough and there is ample humor. But it's definitely lacking something. Maybe it's that it's too predictable as the viewer, fairly early on, can see which way this story is heading. It might be the lack of chemistry between Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman, although Luke and Anna did emanate a certain burn. Maybe that was on purpose since we all can pretty much guess who Luke's character ends up with. If the filmmakers had cared to, they could've made this film as dark and vindictive as, say,THE WAR OF THE ROSES, instead of selling out with the easy ending. As a guy, I found MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND to be mildly entertaining, certainly worth seeing once. I do get the feeling that femaledom might find it more to their liking as their break-up revenge fantasies are so ably embodied in G-Girl. Three stars and a mild recommendation.
And this movie does offer a brief seminar on kissing and tongue-licking.
By the way, there's isn't really much to the Bonus Features section: five deleted scenes, an extended shark sequence, and Molly McQueen's music video "No Sleep 2 Nite." Side A of the disc has the full screen presentation while Side B has the wide screen version.
My Super Fun Night
posted on 20 Aug 2009Breaking up is hard to do, but sometimes it can be downright dangerous. Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson) thinks he's finally found the perfect girlfriend, the beautiful Jenny Johnson (Uma Thurman) -- who just so happens to be a superhero. When Jenny/G-Girl becomes overly possessive, Matt wants to call it quits -- but how do you break up with a superhero? A scorned woman, Jenny/G-Girl unleashes on her ex the full fury of her super-powered wrath as she sets out on a no-holds-barred mission to bust up Matt's budding romance with his co-worker Hannah (Anna Faris). An okay production but still kind of flawed. All right for everyone except my bro My Super Ex-Girlfriend 8/10
Can a man break up with his (super) girlfriend without ramifications?
posted on 20 Aug 2009OK, generally speaking, this was a pretty bad movie. In fact, speaking generally or any other way, this was a pretty bad movie. Despite the fact that Uma Thurman appears in a super-girl type outfit, it's not enough to redeem this sorry excuse for a movie. The plot held some promise, but the overacting and over-the-top outlandish methods G-Girl (Thurman's alter-ego) uses to show her ex-boyfriend that she's not happy are criminal in every sense of the word.Does any woman really believe that, when her boyfriend breaks up with her, "getting even" will make him come back? Save your money. See "Batman Begins" instead.
Cute, fluffy popcorn...no worse than any other above-average date flick.
posted on 18 Aug 2009"Super-Ex", which I've REALLY been looking forward to for a couple of months, had a couple of strikes against it, off-the-bat.(a) Ivan Reitman's direction is lethargic and sloppy. Past your sell-by date, Ivan.(b) A godawful score by Teddy Castellucci, who I'd never heard of, and had to go to the IMDb to find out who he was. (For those who care, he's done a whole plethora of instantly forgettable scores on sophomoric comedies.) It was so lazy, it was obvious straight away it was a temp-track lift from James Newton Howard's infinitely superior "Dave".(c) I want to strangle whoever came up with the title font, and the "oh-my-giddy-aunt, those-are-the-worst-end-titles-I-think-I've-ever-seen". Seriously. They're like the "Anti-Kiss-Kiss, Bang-Bang".It's a shame, because it's a good cast (who all to a man -- and woman -- seem to be wading through treacle at half-power), and a fun idea. The script is pretty good, although not great, and really needed another pass. Curiously, it seems to fall flat on its superhero genre conventions...which is largely worrying, as the writer Don Payne is now scripting "Fantastic Four". (Note to the entire executive board of 20th Century Fox: kill yourselves now. You're grinding the sci-fi and fantasy genre into the ground with your lack of ability and knowledge of said.) Some funny lines, like "You seem to attract crazy women, don't you? It's like you give off a scent", which are amazingly applicable to me, given that I've had four beautiful-but-nutso girlfriends in a linear row over the last several years, each with a multitude of psychotic tendencies. (My long-suffering friends will empathize especially with this...there's even a passing physical similarity with Uma in at least 3 of them.) Needless to say, I laughed and sympathised with Luke Wilson's character.
Funny!
posted on 14 Aug 2009"My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006), the latest film by Ivan Reitman (of "Ghostbusters" fame) is another funny comedic film from him that this time tackles superheroes the likes of "Superman Returns". Starring Uma Thurman as "G-Girl" (she herself has tackled the superhero genre as Emma Peel in "The Avengers", Poison Ivy in "Batman and Robin" and The Bride in "Kill Bill"), it tells the story of Matt Saunders, an average joe (hilariously played by Luke Wilson) who unknowingly asks G-Girl out. However, over the course of their relationship, it becomes blatantly obvious that G-Girl is needy, manipulative and obsessive. And when he decides to dump her . . . well all I will say is LOOK OUT! Also starring the very funny Anna Faris, I recommend this film is you're in the mood for another type of superhero. An 8 out of 10.
A Funny Version of Superman
posted on 10 Aug 2009This Is one good movie, To me, it is like a funny version of Superman, If I had a girlfriend like that, I would not dump her! For one thing, she could get you the perfect Present for Birthdays and Christmas. I have a play station game called Jaws Unleashed! in this game, you are a great White Shark, and I cannot ever recall G Girl pulling me out of the water and hurling me at a couple making love! then the couple throwing me out of their bedroom window. this does not happen in my game! This film also reminds me of Clark Kent! I did enjoy this film a lot and I did get a jolt when Jenny appeared with a chain saw in Matthew!s Dream. I do not have any grumbles about this film at all. Just do not dump Jenny that is all you have to do. if you do not love her then you should not chat her up. Hannah was nice I thought, I found that Professor an interfering person I'm going to mark this film 10/10 for a good comedy picture. I forgot to say what presents she can get you, Well first of all, if you wanted a racing car set, She would get you the real thing! and if you wanted a Clock that strikes, she would get you a Public clock! not a normal Grandfather clock! and if you wanted a train set, she would get you a real train! in other words, all her presents would be huge! Just like that shark was.
you probably have to know your comics
posted on 08 Aug 2009Fun little movie, which turns a lot of the usual sexist conventions upside down when our hero more or less inadvertently attracts the attention of a female super-girl (with the requisite Superman powers). As it happens she is a needy vixen with a kinky streak and serious jealousy issues so our soft teddy of a man turns to the work babe (Faris) and trouble ensues.Lots of funny comic jokes and chauvinistic remarks in all directions, but this is definitely a standard chewing-gum movie and not something to take serious in any way. Bonus for the excellent effects and for the feminist ending which isn't what you would expect.
A skit-size joke stretched to movie length
posted on 14 Jul 2009Given the low cost and high power of computer generated special effects, superhero movies are all the rage in Hollywood, from the revival of the Batman and Superman franchises, the continuing success of the Spider-Man franchise, the spectacle of Tim Allen as a superhero, and so on. So it's not a surprise that someone would take CGI firepower and use it in a comedy, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and with Uma Thurman as the titular superhero ex-girlfriend, they have someone who could credibly pull it off.
But what certainly seems like a clever Saturday Night Live bit never really does more than could be done in about four minutes on a Saturday night. The movie is padded with meeting the characters, seeing the relationship blossom, giving a reason for them to break up, THEN finally getting the break-up before having a somewhat forced resolution, ending the best part of the movie for the sake of it being a conventional film.
The best stuff that you've certainly seen in the commercials -- G-Girl twisting a butcher knife with her bare hands during the break-up, flying off and busting through her now ex-boyfriend's roof, flinging a live killer shark through a window -- that's all from the sequence in the middle, when she's in deranged ex-girlfriend mode. The other stuff that's added on, including a tiresome Lex Luthor-like nemesis, is what drags this film down. (And with all the padding, we never get the only interesting backstory: What G-Girl means, other than a blink-and-you-miss-it suggestion in a deleted scene that it might be a g-spot joke, which doesn't make sense for the characters at all.)
It's not the fault of the supporting cast that they're underfoot. Rainn Wilson is good, as is Anna Faris, although Wanda Sykes is criminally wasted in this film. Eddie Izzard doesn't really get the chance to shine that he deserves: His archvillainous Professor Bedlam is, frankly, kind of a wuss and clearly no match for G-Girl in any sense.
This isn't a bad way to spend an evening for a superhero fan: The good stuff is pretty good, the special effects are neat (G-Girl's flight and high-speed motion has a nice visual), there's a number of DC Comics references (G-Girl spinning like a top to suck the oxygen away from a fire, super-breath and fire-vision, a creepy tryst a half-mile above Manhattan set to dopey Superman I romantic music that terrifies Luke Wilson's non-flying character) and the performers do a good job with very ordinary material.
But it's a rental for all but the most obsessive Uma Thurman or Luke Wilson fans.
Unnecessary
posted on 08 Jul 2009The word that best describes this yawner - unnecessary. Full of unnecessary violence and sexual inuendo without a connection to the plot. An unnecessary waste of film and film-makers time. I *almost* chuckled at one point in this "comedy" but then my chuckle turned into a yawn waiting for the funny part, thinking, "certainly it cannot be this bad all the way through." But, it is, and led to me spending unnecessary time I could have been watching something entertaining. Rent it from the library if you must but do not waste any money on it.
The Story of a Super JENNY
posted on 06 Jul 2009Got late this time to be shown on our lokal dilapidated shores, when it only opened yesterday in Manila, and I just got back from watching the movie (on DOLBY Digital (only that I got a little too close to the screen)) after doing a little troubleshooting of sorts on this pc I'm using to post this little review (thought it just about crashed).
This flick directed by GHOSTBUSTER filmmaker Ivan Reitman together with SIMPSONS writer Don Payne, collaborated and did a splendid job in making a great spin to the whole super-hero(ine) storyline thing, where Uma Thurman stars as Jenny Johnson, a geek who inherited superpowers (all similar to those of DC's Superman) from a meteor that plunges into the earth one night while making out with her high school boyfriend Barry, played by that good comedian (who turned straight)Eddie Izzard, which became G-Girl's (that's Uma Thurman's super-heroine alter ego) arch-nemensis in adult life, named Bedlam.
The story ran when a bachelor named Matt Saunders played by Luke Wilson, due to the advice of his ever-horny friend (Rainn Wilson), gets to approach Jenny, and that it went on from there that Matt found himself a girlfriend 'til events turn out when he found out Jenny happens to be G-Girl, he decides to dump her but felt that it's not that simple trying to break up with a woman who possesses super-powers. And that's where things start to get complicated.
However the hole on the plotline often goes that with G-Girl's superhearing powers ( a thing often mentioned even in the movie), how come the characters were able to cook up something behind G-Girl's back. Something that'd went unexplained.
On another note, Anna Farris plays Hannah Lewis, who did her part very well in the movie as Matt's colleague that happens to be taken by Matt herself, but has a model guy for a boyfriend. In the middle of the flick I can't hardly believe that she kinda looked somewhat like a digitalized resemblance of Britney Spears that I suspected she was, until I read the credits. And of course she looked a lot damn prettier than the then-child STAR SEARCH contestant turned you-know-what. And I also nearly mistook Izzard for Mark Hammill, maybe when the Luke Skywalker actor ages some more, he'd definitely look a lot like Eddie Izzard. Uhrmp, just a side note though...
And as for the ever foxy Uma Thurman - she's one of the best hottest chicks who've ever came up from the planet of Hollywood , and still is. She got me captivated since one of her first earliest roles from Terry Gilliam's BARRY MUNCHOUSEN flick.
And what a role she played that was. Lordy... (sighs)
Actually, Thurman played a blind character before as a behounded gal on Jennifer 8, kinda like simialr to the roles played before by Mia Farrow, and Audrey Hepburn on one of the most excellent crime-schlock flicks -- WAIT UNTIL DARK.
Say howzabout another duel with Daryl Hannah as the blind swords-woman, for KILL BILL Part Three! that'll be an interestingly nice concept for another sequel to the Kill Bill movies isn't it? hearken, kudos to me I guess.
Moreover, all ends well that ends well for our heroine in this flick - but of course, we ain't just gonna spill.

A Super-cool movie
posted on 03 Jul 2009I saw the previews for this movie over the summer and didn't get a chance to see it in the theaters. I think the premise is a great idea, a superhero who gets dumped. I think this movie was lost in the shuffle with the all the summer blockbusters and for that i think it didn't get its fair shake at the box office. This movie is a simple no brainer movie with some clever lines and scenes. Uma Thurman, who is one of Hollywood's most underrated actresses scores a super 10 in my book as a crazy superhero who gets dumped. yes, there are some standard scenes and the typical Hollywood ending but if you can get past that, the humor and the storyline are in good form. i think this movie was meant to sedate the action films released during the summer and what i think was intended to be a sleeper hit, didn't materialize. however, i think everyone should give this movie a shot, its funny and the acting is good. i thought it was super.
About what you'd expect
posted on 01 Jul 2009It's really too bad that Reitman has wound up like this. He made Evolution, and now this. Earlier in his career, what he gave us was considerably better. The concept is essentially a gimmick, and it sadly doesn't grow any. It's little more than adding powers to the old "neurotic ex" idea, and panders to the superficial relationship too many have with such... "talents". This is a wasted opportunity. There are not enough movies that focus on the people, instead of just showcasing what they can do. Ah, of course, if this was, on the whole, good, that would be easier to forgive. But it's flat, bland and not all that satisfying. The characterization is almost non-existent, so we have a bunch of stereotypes walking around, and finding a single likable one is an activity exclusively possible for advanced "Where's Waldo" experts. Sense is thrown out the window a couple of times for the sake of jokes and gags, or for the script to keep going, and this isn't funny anywhere near as often as it tries to be. The pacing is reasonable, and this romp isn't necessarily boring. The CGI and effects in general are quite good, smooth and well-integrated. The music is great. The acting varies. This flick has the mentality of a teenage boy, with non-stop focus on sex, a tendency towards an unflattering view on women(particularly those with authority) and not featuring emotional depth as much as just mixed bursts of feelings, usually stemming from either end of the spectrum. The language is mild-to-moderate, in tone as well as frequency, and the sensuality is clothed and supposed to be comical. I recommend this to those in the mood for a "turn off your brain" film, and fans of those who made it. 6/10
Surprisingly good. Whimsical and sweet, a fantasy rom-com
posted on 29 Jun 2009Given the bad press this movie had gotten, I expected a dreary mess. As
it was, I was pleasantly surprised. This was a GOOD MOVIE!!! This was
really a sweet, goofy, and nice little movie. Not great art, true. But
it did have some laughs, some excitement. Moreover, it also had a bit
of 'meaning'. That might spell death for a screwball comedy--- but
nonetheless I appreciated the fact that I was somewhat gratified by the
ending.
Uma Thurman is known for being a hottie, and a great actress, whether
in serious or comedic roles. Anna Farris, of the Scary Movie series,
also proves herself to be not only a cutie and a babe, but a fine
actress as well. Luke Wilson is mellowing and maturing into some great
work these days too. This ain't Shakespeare, folks--- it's just a
comedy. With some color, some sex, a bit of humor. But that's all it
was meant to be.
I think the critics were overly harsh on this movie. Dunno why. Oh
well. Make up your own mind, then... check it out. If you are in the
mood for a laugh, you'll get your five quid's worth of entertainment.
Fun concept squashed by movie machine
posted on 23 Jun 2009With a hint of cleverness and just a dash of flair, seasoned veteran Ivan Reitman was able to bring this fused superhero/romantic comedy out with moderate success. Many oogled over the simple fact of revered pinup Uma Thurman being given the chance to suit up and take to the skies, fighting crime and battling neurosis all the while, a fanboys wet dream come true. When it became apparent that this was going to be a comedy skewing both the genres, along with a healthy serving of sexist subtext, it still seemed like the famous film-maker had a hit on his hands. So why did this fun premise feel so ordinarily routine by curtain call? For one it was, in fact, directed by Ivan Reitman who, despite the illustrious name recognition, has probably not had a resonant piece of film come out in multiple decades, another certified member of the Sleepwalking Directors Guild. Having fun with a concept in this mentality comes across as stumbling through a stupidly sincere bit, executing a flat joke, exiting the premises; rinse and repeat. Fortunately, the crazy ex-girlfriend with superpowers routine does afford itself a few choice moments that elevate the mediocrity from complete boredom. Thurman is not half bad, especially in her frazzled alter-ego, ala Clark Kent. It is nice to see her have some fun for a change, she clearly is a lot funnier then most people give her credit for. Predictably, Luke Wilson offers little else but cushy familiarity, the warm, dull embrace of the non threatening everyman. While nowhere near as obnoxious as his brother, he is also less charismatic and lead roles always suffer for his inclusion. Aside from the few funny gags, this premise is underwhelmingly utilized, even for the mediocre standards we would expect from the pedigree, offering instead the mechanical sludge we should instead predict.
It ain't super, but it's funny
posted on 21 Jun 2009Ivan Reitman is back to wacky, black comedy, but he is no longer in his prime. This one is not as wacky as 'Ghostbusters', or 'Evolution', and not as emotional as 'Twins' and 'Kindergarden Cop', but My super ex-girlfriend fun and frisky, occasionally mean-spirited but a lot better than the comedies that come pouring out from Hollywood these days.Matt Saunders is a normal person in Chicago who falls in love with a very abnormal girl. Jenny appears to be a simple bystander when until he finds out that she is the local superhero G-Girl, and she is too crazy for him. So he dumps her. Heartbroken in a satirical soap operatic way, Jenny attempts to make Matt's life a living hell. Matt slowly begins to realize his inner affections for a co-worker, but in order for them to be together he must get Jenny out of his life. He teams up with her old high school sweetheart (now a super villain) in an attempt to stop rid Jenny of her powers. A preposterous climax emerges, but everything ends up okay.Uma Thurman is amusing but she is miscast. This is the kind of role that Joan Cussak or Tina Fey would be perfectly at home in. Thurman is not experienced enough with comedy to be a perfect satirical drama queen, but she gives it a go. Nothing much else to say, give it a try.
Not good
posted on 19 Jun 2009This movie is being shown over and over on cable lately, so..There is no excuse for these 2 attractive women to fight over either Luke Wilson or the equally vapid 'villian' in this movie. The female actresses are very cute, and that's the only reason to watch this movie. I suppose it is 'funny' that Luke's even uglier/dorkier/stupider friend is around, but well, that is what we get.Neither of the female leads would ever, EVER talk to any of the males in this movie for more than 5 minutes. What we get is them sobbing and crying and fighting and so on over 2 guys that were best described in Friday the 13th 4. Dead *@$#
Good, but not Super Good
posted on 17 Jun 2009This is one of those movies that make better trailers than full-length feature films. The concept was really cool and different, the humor was unique, I just felt there were missed opportunities to put the "punch" into this movie. So many lines and gags were left hanging too long, with no definite ending and really didn't leave me laughing. Wilson, Wilson, Farris & Thurman were great. Wanda Sykes was under-used in this film and needed more exposure, and more opportunities to spin her character into more screen time. 7 out of 10 for me, more of a DVD rental. Also, I was looking for some sort of a feel-good music video during the end credits, something that has become sort of a trade-mark to these romantic comedy films, a la Something About Mary, Meet the Parents but again, I was left feeling a little cheated by fact that this COULD have been a much better film with a little more music and punchier punch lines. It felt like it was RUSHED into theaters.
A truly unfunny film...
posted on 13 Jun 2009If "Reit-Man" were a superhero, he'd have the amazing ability to suck any humorous potential out of a movie premise and turn it into a lifeless hunk of film. It is hard to believe this is the same man who brought us gems like "Stripes" and "Ghostbusters".The movie centers around the character of G-Girl/Jennifer. Uma Thurman's performance is bland. Her awful performance as Poison Ivy in the fourth Batman movie actually looks good by comparison. She is a sexist stereotype of every jilted ex-girlfriend with zero dimension to her personality other than the amusing concept that she has superpowers. However, since any humor was washed out with the script, all the potential is lost. The hero played by Luke Wilson is drab, unfunny, and incredibly dense. I guess they were going for a kind of a parody on the Lois Lane being oblivious to the fact that Clark Kent is Superman wearing glasses and a bad suit, but it wasn't nearly as funny as it could have been. Actresses who've played Lois over the years have given her dimension, but this guy is a knob, maybe just by the fact he is a guy. More importantly, he's not likable! He seems to think helping the supervillian deprive the heroine of her powers is a good idea, even though he knows that she saves hundreds of lives every day. The supervillian as stalker. Now there's an awful idea. The special effects were lame, particularly the scene with the shark that gets thrown in through a window. It was obviously CGI. Even the "super cat fight" at the end of the film was an exercise in missed potential. The Superhero Genre is ripe for comedic harvest. "The Incredibles", which was geared towards children, was a hundred times funnier than this dull nonsense, and it didn't even star real people! My recommendation is that instead of watching this garbage, rent "The Incredibles", and save yourself the expense of overpriced popcorn and soda.
Funny!
posted on 01 Jun 2009Let's face it - lots of so-called funny movies aren't very funny at all - or is it just me?! Anyway, I found this one DID amuse me. Maybe one appreciates it more if one is used to watching "superhero" films like the Superman, Batman, X-Men, Spiderman etc franchises but, be that as it may, it sure made comedy sense to me.I won't say much about the story except that it is a good idea and works... with quite a few fully rounded characters to pad out the basic idea of a superhero experiencing base, down-to-earth human emotions and behaving anything like a hero!Poor ol' Uma Thurman has painted herself into a corner a bit with her tough cookie role in Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2 making it hard for me now to take her seriously as a "weak" woman - but this particular part suits our perception of her and is entirely, well as believable as anything featuring someone supposed to have super powers can be!

You just don't get. Super heroes are cool!
posted on 30 Aug 2009I am surprised that this gets a 5.5 average rating on IMDb. Yes its campy and a wee bit cheesy but its about super hero's. Super heroes are cool! If you ever collected comic books or ever wondered/daydreamed about having a super hero friend/lover this will be the film for you. The film has great realism in that those super power makes anyone a little crazy. That constant pressure to save non-powered humans all the time can make anyone stressed. No X-Men scary drama here. Yet the Kill Bill G-force girl still does the classic struggle to fit in our human world. This film made me laugh more than any die hard comedy spoof even Eurotrip. The humor is very witty and charming. A must see. 9 stars... - Chris
