Hilarious
posted on 30 Aug 2009This movie is funny and intelligent. It wasn't my mood either: I found it even funnier the second time. No point in analyzing it; just sit back and let it roll over you. I especially like the way the rage guy faces off with the Sphynx character and how the girl hero has such thick makeup, reminding me of a pathetic adolescent who has no friends to tell her she's got it on too thick. The lack of unity, the lack of self-confidence, the bickering of these pathetic would-be heroes is so funny! And the evil characters are, if anything, even more funny. The German guy only has to open his mouth before mine is open in laughter. Those who complain that the film is full of clichés misses the point. It's the clichés more than anything that makes this film work so well. Airplane did that but Mystery Man takes it to a new level. The scene of the two in the light of the full moon, opera music swelling, while the otter...
Great Random Humor!
posted on 29 Aug 2009I went and saw this film when it first came out and expected it to do better. The problem was with it,random humor. If your not into random humor you won't like this.I think a lot of people went and saw this thinking it would be slapstick.
This is a great comedy, with funny performances by William H.Macy,Jeanene Gralafalo, and Ben Stiller.Remember if you like slapstick you won't like this but if you like random humor you'll love this.
Heroes who didn't make the cut, but refuse to warm the bench.
posted on 20 Aug 2009Mystery Men is not your average superhero flick, nor is it your average comedy. Be prepared for "low" humor...the kind that fits well with the best Wannabes ever to attain headline news status. Who ever heard of a hero that can only turn invisible when nobody's watching, or a mainstream superhero with sponsors like Pepsi, who is so good (apparently) that he has to let criminals out of jail in order to have somebody to fight? Warning: it's not for everybody. If you like the sort of "proper yet irreverent" humor of Monty Python, then you may or may not appreciate "Mystery Men." It's definitely low humor, though there is an intelligence in it that is anything but pretentious. Unleash the nonlethal weapons, and "Valla con Dios!"
Sort of "Superman" meets "Austin Powers"
posted on 10 Aug 2009With a cast of bizzare villains, witty one liners, and a stellar cast, "Mystery Men" is a fun movie, but it doesn't really amount to more than that. The plot is standard for superhero films, and even though this is sort of intended to be a parody, the fact that the genre is kind of campy to begin with doesn't help.
Satire that never got the look it needed...
posted on 02 Aug 2009This movie was completely underrated, it is quite good if you realize what it really is, a satire. The whole movie makes many great satirical or spoofs of superhero movies. Look at the city's name, Champion City, classical superhero setting with a classical superhero (a joking combination of Batman and Superman ideas) Captain Amazing (how can anyone take that seriously?). Then they go on to show the second string superheroes like the Shoveler and the Blue Raja. But the real joke is their obsession with the superhero genre. For example when fighting a gang of Disco guys, William H. Macy (A God among men) even says to the one toting a pipe as a weapon "What are you supposed to be, the Disco Plumber?". The entire idea is summed up with the recruiting party. The whole movie just runs with the idea of how much fun can be poked at superhero movies... Even the super villain is an obvious joke, his name is Casanova Frankenstein. I would recommend watching it, not because it is a good movie with a good plot, but because it makes fun of good movies with good plots and that makes it funny...
its not very thought provoking, but it IS a comedy after all
posted on 01 Aug 2009I know that a lot of people come on to amazon and write reviews for comedies (such as Mystery Men) and call them: stupid, puerile, juvenile, and poorly acted. I would like to ask these people what exactly they would like a comedy to be. It would certainly be fine to critizice a movie for these flaws if it were brought out to be a semi serious comedy, however mystery men is not. What mystery men provides is an amusing little break in reality that has many good one-liners, and slap stick humor. True, it will never win an oscar, for best film/director/actor but it does entertain. And really when I set out for a quick comedy movie to watch thats all I expect. If I want a thought provoking movie I'll watch Metropolis, or Schindlers list, or Saving Private Ryan. Honestly though sometimes the movie did lag in certain spots, but other than that it was fun and funny. I wouldn't suggest buying this if you are stuck up about movies and will only buy something criticly acclaimed, but if you are normal, than this is for you.
Hilarious, great fun!
posted on 23 Jul 2009First time director Kinka Usher has trouble setting a solid tone; but she could not have been more fortunate with such an amazing ensemble cast of brilliant people and such super production design; also: HOORAY FOR EVERYONE!!!! Very funny, good script, great casting!!!!
A bunch of goofy super hero wannabees use their strange powers to achieve stardom and save Captain Amazing
posted on 11 Jul 2009The only reason why I saw this movie was because of it's all star cast. But when I walked out, I was very glad I saw it. This movie was cute and packed with action, adventure, and loads of really korny jokes. The Spleen(Paul Reubens) was definetly my least favorite w/ his flatuant powers which totally grossed me out. Hank Azaria(Blue Raja), Ben Stiller(Mr. Furious), and Greg Kinnear(captain Amazing who has more advertisements than a stock car) however were awesome and hilarious. Geoffrey Rush(Casanova Frankenstein) played a remarkably funny villain which is totally a different side of him than what I see in Elizabeth or Les Miserables. William H. Macy(The Shoveler), my knight in shining armor, was definetly my favorite character though. With his adorably dorky voice and cute little smile, how can you resist him. This movie is great despite it's minor flaws and the special effects are impressive. The PG-13 movies I go to are usually jam packed w/ vulgar language. This was a relief when all I heard was one S word come out of Azaria's mouth and an almost F word("What the fork?") which I thought was pretty funny. There's hardly anything harmful in this movie except a little blood. This movie deserves an 8 out of 10.
Very funny; above average
posted on 09 Jul 2009The plot is a bit of a mess in places, but it works much more often than it doesn't. Anyone who likes comic books will love this movie, but even if you don't like comic books, give it a chance. The dialog is great (and very funny) and the special effects are well done. There is some fart-related humor, but no bad language, and very little actual violence.
Too fool to be taken seriously.
posted on 09 Jul 2009This is certainly one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. The story is dull and film itself bores us to death. This would make you get up and do something else, but they great cast saves the day. First-rate actor Geoffrey Rush and good ones like Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy, Ben Stiller and Claire Forlani are here to make we watch the movie until the end. That's all about it.My Rate 5/10
Conserve your energy...
posted on 15 Jun 2009As a Stiller, Macy and Garafalo fan, I found this movie totally disasterous. There was an occasionally decent gag, moment or fraction of a moment from time to time during the film, but all of that was overwhelmed by the sense that a lot of things did not go as planned here. If I was drawn in cartoon form in the theater, there would have been a thought bubble over my head with only this: "Huh?"There are plenty of times in movie history when the cast is clearly having more fun than the audience ... Cannonball Run, Mars Attacks, "Rat Pack" films. This one at times was embarrassing enough to make me wish I actually was watching "Cannonball." Those fart jokes? Speaking as someone who's normally a fan of fart humor, these ones fell flat. I've already written much more about this than it deserves. I'm hesitant to believe that anyone who's seen this movie can look in the mirror and honestly tell themselves it was funny. It seems like some people here on this site are giving Mystery Men credit for simply trying to be funny and having some cool actors.Quite simply, this film is a mess.
Not the worst movie I've ever seen....
posted on 04 Jun 2009...but close.
Sorry to all those people who found this an entertaining movie, but I thought it was a big pile of steaming poo.
Saying that, I have watched it twice. It was better the second time around because I expected to find the film rubbish, and so was pleasantly surprised at a few points.
It's a real shame though, because when I saw the trailers in the cinema for this movie, I thought "I gotta get that, it's going to be hilarious". It promised so much, and delivered next to nothing in return.
You could buy worse, but not much.
Only The Funniest "Black Comedy" Ever Made!
posted on 15 May 2009Only in this movie could several wanna-be's go out to save their city's superhero and end up killing him instead. How funny is that? And of the course my ultimate favorite line of the movie when The Shoveler (Bill Macy) is confronted by a gold pipe-wielding "Disco Boy": "....What are you? The Disco Plumber?"
Great trip through Superhero Land
posted on 30 Apr 2009Personally, I love superhero spoofs. There are so few, and this is one of them. I watched "The Tick" on Fox when I returned to the States, and when Mystery Men first came out, I had to see it. I wasn't disapointed. This film is not for the serious film critic. It is a comedy spoof with a great line at every turn, ie: "We are number one, all others are number two or lower." Is that classic or what? The graphics are all digital and for the time, quite good. The setting is somewhere out of a William Gibson Sprawl dream and reminds me somewhat of Akira.Great movie for a Friday night TV party!
What a Waste!
posted on 20 Apr 2009Arrrrrg!!! Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria, and Paul Ruebens, all could not save this movie. It was frustrating to watch Mystery Men. This movie could have been a lot better. I'm not sure what went wrong, but something did. It was bad. Very bad. Not funny, not entertaining, not even the least bit amusing.
There's something different under that cape.
posted on 04 Apr 2009OK. There are people who should not see this movie.1) Don't see it if you don't like satire or black humour. 2) Don't like it if you got offended by _The Watchmen_. 3) Don't see it if you want a serious superhero movie. The rest of you, run, don't walk, to see _Mystery Men_. It's funny, it's quirky, it's a delightful sendup of every bad superhero cliche known to man. Occasional forays into junior-high humour don't ruin the tongue-in-cheek low-key fun of Jeanane Garafalo, Ben Stiller, and Hank Azaria, as well as a couple of amusing smaller parts by Geoffrey Rush and Greg Kinnear. (Good to see Louise Lasser getting work, too.) I laughed all the way through. Utterly unserious, somewhat weird, but -good-.
Hysterical and very Art Deco!
posted on 22 Mar 2009This film is really special. It's not some low budget comedy movie but it's a mix between Batman, Seinfeld and Austin Powers, an overall bizarre combination!
I really like the part when Stiller jumps on the badguys' car and tries to scratch the label off! LOL!
If you really want to give yourself a break and indulge in some innocent childish fun you should watch this movie.

Great, funny, 10/10
posted on 30 Aug 2009I loved this movie.Mystery Men is an extremely funny super-hero parody with an excellent cast and a great script. I've already seen it twice, so I know it stands up to repeat viewings, (I may be up for a third round.) Although some of the jokes are comicbook related, most are not, thus, if one is intelligent and observant enough to catch the subtle wit and charm of this film, one should enjoy it immensely. So many comic book related movies suck, that it's nice to see one done right.I haven't enjoyed a movie this much in a very long time.( 10/10 )
