Good actors in a disappointing story
posted on 01 Jun 2009I saw this movie as a sneak preview, so I absolutely didn't know what's awaiting me. After knowing the cast I thought "o.k., this is a safe one and can't go wrong". But then - the movie. After 20 minutes of slight boredom I thought the movie might have had a weak start, but it never got any better. Unfortunately it got even worse. There was this constant impulse to leave the cinema - a feeling I rarely have when watching a movie. Nothing in this story can really catch your attention, you just don't care what's happening. Hence, there's just no character you sympathize with, no one you might not like. You just don't care. It's a pity to see the potential of actors like these wasted in a boring and uninteresting movie like that.Only the ending saved it from the lowest rating. I rate 2/10.
Somewhat of an entertaining movie
posted on 01 Jun 2009One Night At McCool's was an ok movie. There were some funny scenes but it's not like i was laughing my ass off during this movie. It was good to see Andrew-Dice-Clay and Paul Keiser do some acting in this movie. Liv Tyler was sexy as can be for a change. So go out and rent it on DVD it's worth taking a look at. 6/10
Messy - a lot/Pretentious - off-spot
posted on 22 May 2009The intertwined points-of-view can come up as a good idea in some movies. Here it is a total mess. But the total mess begin with the story: a video-clip bummy wants to shoot a light comedy with a pernicious noir-like female character. She is gorgeous and no men could resist to dive and crawl and suck her toes. She is all the more materialist, looking as if butter wouldn't melt in her mouth. The movie does melt away in its own pretentiousness: being smart/funny/good-looking. Phalocretinism at his best. White trash only, please.
Waste of time...
posted on 17 May 2009This movie could have been entitled 'The Liv Tyler Show'. Unless you just want to look at her, don't bother even renting this movie. I rented it because Matt Dillion was in it and I love his work, especially his comedic roll in 'Something About Mary'. I was surprised that he would do this film and without his presence and talent this movie would be an even bigger flop. He did a wonderful job but without a script or plot you can't do but so much. Don't bother with this one.
Nothing much to say......
posted on 16 May 2009There's always one of those days when you find a piece of "comedy" & "entertainment" film that simply does not entertain you or make you laugh at all, either the story, the characters, the gags used, etc.One night at McCool's is just a sample of a tragic try to make a very crazy movie with a dark comic atmosphere that in my opinion just didn't work at all.Liv Tyler, Paul Riser, Matt Dillon, John Goodman and specially Michael Douglas, make one of the worst all-around cast performances I've ever seen in my entire life. Robinson Almanzar.
You like water?
posted on 03 May 2009One Night at McCool's is a dark comedy that is pretty darn entertaining. Maybe it is just one long set up for a Village People gag, but it's fun to stay at the YMCA. They have assembled a very interesting cast, and everyone contributes, making the whole equal to more than the sum of its parts. The story is told like a Faulkner novel, from multiple viewpoints. It's Rashamon Time, as Randy the bartender (Matt Dillon); his cousin, the lawyer Carl Harding (Paul Reiser); and grieving widower Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all tell different versions of the events that happened One Night at McCool's. Each of the men have someone to tell their story to: Carl tells Dr. Green (Reba McEntire), Dehling tells Father Jimmy (Richard Jenkins), and Randy tells Mr. Burmeister (Michael Douglas), the hitman he has hired to take care of his "problem."
Randy's problem is Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler), the woman he encountered One Night at McCool's. She has driven him, along with Carl and Detective Dehling, stark raving crazy. All she really wants is to have a nice house full of nice furniture and things, but what won't she do to get them? Or, what won't she make the men do?
Liv Tyler is well cast as a woman with the the power to drive men wild. She has a certain charisma, but at the same time she's kind of a dork. See Stealing Beauty for further evidence of her beautiful brand of dorkiness. Paul Reiser was best known for the sit com, "Mad About You," but One Night at McCool's gives him the opportunity to stretch his comedic envelope. Richard Jenkins, as Father Jimmy, turns in yet another brilliant character actor turn. He has finally gotten some recognition with an Oscar nomination for "The Visitor." As the lead, not supporting, Jack. John Goodman is a good man, Matt Dillon is always willin' to go that extra mile, and Michael Douglas is a hit as the hitman. And did I mention Andrew 'Dice' Clay in not one but two roles? Fugedaboutit! Four cast members have appeared in films with Kevin Bacon. All this, and the best use of a snowglobe as metaphor since Citizen Kane?
Death Sentence (Unrated Edition) (2007) .... John Goodman was Bones Darley (with Kevin Bacon)
The Visitor (2007/I) .... Richard Jenkins was Prof. Walter Vale
Loverboy (2005) .... Matt Dillon was Mark (with Kevin Bacon)
Wild Things (Unrated Edition) (1998) .... Matt Dillon was Sam Lombardo (with Kevin Bacon)
The Big Lebowski - 10th Anniversary Edition (1998) .... John Goodman was Walter Sobchak
Stealing Beauty (1996) .... Liv Tyler was Lucy Harmon
Falling Down (1993) .... Michael Douglas was William 'D-Fens' Foster
Tremors (1990) .... Reba McEntire was Heather Gummer (with Kevin Bacon)
Pretty in Pink (1986) .... Andrew 'Dice' Clay was Bouncer at CATS
Diner (1982) .... Paul Reiser was Modell (with Kevin Bacon)
One Night at McCool's is an excellent film because of the performance of the actors. Each actor was able to engaged the audience
posted on 27 Mar 2009I really enjoyed this movie because of the performances of the actors and the timing in the story. Matt Dillon gives a "Fresh" performance. The time he took off before doing this movie really comes through in his performance. The scene where John Goodman's character informs Matt's character that he has to move out of his house. When camera show Matt's character reaction. I was so impressed with Matt's range of emotions in 10 seconds when he calls out to Jewel. This is a typical of Matt Dillon's performances. It is"classic". Also, I love the "working guy" look. Long hair, Levi jean, and the the t-shirt . Of all of the movies I own of Matt Dillon's. This is the one I like to watch on a snowy, gray day. It just really makes my day. He sold me on his performance in this movie.
Simply a kick-ass film
posted on 13 Mar 2009You can look at just about any movie and come up with misogynistic theories. Personally I saw Liv Tyler's character as an incredibly powerful, totally in charge and in control person. My wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed the film from start to finish.I would describe it as 'Rashomon' meets 'There's Something About Mary'. Everyone has a totally different view of exactly the same sequences. Everyone draws completely different conclusions based on their perceptions as well. It kind of proves that you can't judge a book by it's cover, particularly when the cover is somewhat out of focus. There is not one bad performance in the film, and even Andrew "Dice Clay" Silverman is a riot. Once you see it, you'll never be able to hear the song 'Y.M.C.A.' without thinking of this movie. The ending has to rate as one of the funniest blackout gags ever filmed. Highly recommended.
Oh, how I laughed!
posted on 05 Mar 2009This is one of the most wickedly funny movies I've ever seen. The comedic timing is wonderful, and the characters really work well together. I'm usually unimpressed by female roles in movies, but this role was well written, and Liv Tyler does a great job with it.
Slicker than your average poppa
posted on 28 Feb 2009I remember the previews on T.V. when this movie was released and thinking "Wow, Liv Tyler is hot!". 3 years later I finally get round to watching the movie and discover that Liv Tyler is indeed very hot. However there's much more to this little movie than Liv Tyler's hotness. The movie retells the same story from 3 different points of view, the bartender, the banker and the cop. Each of these stories is slightly different with an enjoyable and entertaining subtlety that really doesn't come across in the preview that concentrates on Liv Tyler washing a car. The subtlety gets kinds lost at the end (losing the movie a star IMHO) but the set up and concept are intelligent enough, and the follow through done well enough that I'd even apply the rarefied term "Coen-esque" to the project. Top marks all around, I'd suggest buying over renting, as one picks up on more details the second time around. And besides, Liv Tyler is really hot!
This movie proves women are dangerous. This is the perfect comedy!
posted on 21 Feb 2009I had never heard of this movie, before I saw it sitting on the shelves at my local videostore, but I am glad that I found it. In the vain of movies such as There's something about Mary' and Austin Powers', comes this hilarious comedy about a Woman who changes the lives of three men. I have not laughed so hard like that in alongtime. As current man on the singles list, I am keeping a watchful eye out for a girl to date. I hope I don't run into someone like Jewel, because I am sure I could not handle her!She is one hot lady. And after just one night at McCool's, she is the only three unsuspecting men can think about. There's the bartender who was working that night. The lawyer who stayed past closing time. Then there is the cop who showed up to investigate the crime scene. Did we forget to mention the crime? Three men all lusting after one sexy woman it's going to be nothing but trouble after this night at McCool's.This is one of the funniest and smartest movies I have seen in alongtime. The script this movie had was incredible. I enjoyed how all three stories are first told to the audience, then are brought together in a climatic ending. It had an original feel to it, with I'm sure many little touched add in on set. The director of One Night At McCool's was Norwegian Harald
Zwart, who must have very funny sense of humour and imaginative mind, because I really enjoyed what he did with this film. But the standout part of this movie was the cast that it contained. The star of the show was Hollywood beau Liv Tyler. She suited the role of Jewel' perfectly. I love how in almost every scene Jewel hypnotize the men that are lusting after her. It was a big part of this movie, as it is an important part of the movie. I am glad that Liv Tyler got the nod to play jewel, as she plays one woman who is basically many women and did that just right.Yet this film contained some very famous male actors including Hollywood legend Michael Douglas. His role, while it was not the biggest or the most important to this film, it had a big impact on me. His onscreen presence is big for me. By the way, his hairstyle for this movie is unforgettable'. Then you have the very unlucky Randy, played by veteran actor Matt Dillon. His role in this is not so unlike that in There's something about Mary. He was great as Randy. I found that he plays the unlucky sucker pretty well. His other standout movies include Wild Things and There's something about Mary, where he is hilarious once again. Yet the other guys thrown into this weird love triangle are also very good. Paul Reiser, from the TV show Mad About You', was Randy's cousin, Carl, who witnesses all the events between Randy and Jewel. Paul was a funny addition to the cast, with the finale to the film, a cracker. John Goodman, is a comedy genius, with his big frame and chubby face, he is a likable character in almost any sort of film. His role in McCool's is no exception. It is funny how we see him retreat to a priest to get help for his infatuation over Jewel. Goodman is a veteran of the big and small screen, with his great success in the TV hit Roseanne and in movies like The Flintstones, Blues Brothers, and the 2000 hit movie `Coyote Ugly'. This film has many funny scenes, with the main stars always seemingly being involved in something that could get them in big trouble, or bring them great love'! The scene where Jewel firsts meets Randy is very funny, as you are unsure of what both parties are getting into, also the scene where Carl invites Randy and Jewel over for a BBQ is also amusing. Throw in a silly but well thought Village people dance mix at the end makes this very appealing to comedy fans anywhere. To wrap up on One night at McCool's, I want to say that this film shows how silly men act when there is a woman in their life. I am struggling in that area of my life right now, but I do not want to go through what these men had to endure, as it is a real death wish what Jewel puts them through. This film also makes weary of not trusting the first person I see or who sees me, because that is one of the worst ways of being hurt, which I know what is like. Men and women are so alike, they are like the metaphor of a book, that what is on the inside is not always like the outside. Be sure who you have feelings for is the right person, both for there sake and yours!Rating: 5 Stars or 10/10
PERHAPS THE WORST MOVIE EVER MADE BY HUMANS (or other)
posted on 05 Feb 2009One other reviewer called this a piece of trash. He was being very kind. The name alone should tell you to beware. MCOOL'S? Who thought of that name? Imagine the writer sitting there saying, "I need a name that's familiar, like McDonald's, but even 'cooler'... hey, I got it...Mc + Cool!"good lord save us.Michael Douglas bearing false teeth and fake hair? He's simply disgusting in this flick. And as for his acting, well, I'm not a big fan anyway, but this was simply awful.I adore John Goodman and even he is the most pathetic I have ever seen him since the whiny final episodes
of Roseanne. This film makes him look like an amateur.Paul Reiser - Loved him in Alien2. Enough said. Mad about his role in this. ugh. Paul WHINER!Matt Dillan. As the enviable punk from Little Darlings, I grew up knowing him as the toughest guy in films. He was my James Dean. Even Something About Mary gave him a comedic role he could run with. This movie makes him look worse than his brother. He looks not only uncomfortable in the role (like wearing sneakers a size too small), but they groomed his CHEST HAIR for the role!good lord PLEASE save us!Andrew Dice Clay. If I had to choose to never see Dice Clay again versus Dice Clay hidden behind fake hair, a beard, and a diluted version of the once base-but-brilliant humor that caused his downfall... I'll take never seeing him again. He was almost embarrassing to watch. I kept waiting for him to break into his "Jack and Jill" routine, but no... the best we get is the F word. ugh.And finally Liv "Tongue-Tied" Tyler. With the face of a retarded sixth grader and the body of a blow-up doll, she was a visual curiosity. However, because she cannot act for SQUAT,
I can only assume somebody intended this film to be her "Something About Mary" film. How sad. She should stick to soapy love stories or perhaps action adventure. She'd be a great Angel if they ever did a sequel to Charlie's Angels. All in all, it comes down to two simple words about this awful, awful film:STAY AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE.Thanks for letting me rant.Peace,Fizz
An entetaining black comedy.
posted on 13 Jan 2009Mc Cool`s bar was just jumping that night. Randy (Matt Dillon) worked there. His cousin lawyer Carl (Paul Raiser) was there until past closing. Detective Dehling (John Goodman) got there once the bar become a crime scene. Was it the dead body (Andrew Dice Clay) that tied these man together? Not as tightly as the live were who was also there that night. An stunning young woman aptly named Jewel (Liv Tyler). Now Randy wants his life back, by hiring a Hit-Man (Two Time Oscar-Winner:Micheal Douglas).
DVD`s has an clear anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) transfer and an fine Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Included:An running commentary cast by the Director:Harold Zwart and Cast, Deleted Scenes, Different Ending and more. Good comic performances from the cast. An underrated comic gem. Grade:B+.
"Randy, I think not having a job is starting to get to you. No, it's not having any money that's starting to get to me!" <Jewel>
posted on 27 Nov 2008SPOILERS - I rented this DVD based on the excellent cast and what seemed like an interesting story. The writer and director made what they considered a comedy, but it is laced with enough needlessly foul language and gratuitous shootings that it dragged my vote down to a "4" of 10, and I would not recommend it to anyone. This is Jewel's (Liv Tyler) story, about how all she wants is to settle down and have a home that is decorated just the way she envisions. She starts out with one boyfriend (Andrew Clay)who she shoots during his attempted robbery of McCool's, so she can be with Randy(Matt Dillon). The title "One Night At McCool's" is a reference to that night which directly or indirectly also dragged into her life John Goodman and Paul Reiser. Michael Douglas plays a hit man who never quite gets to do his job.Jewel has this magical quality which mesmerizes almost any guy who makes eye contact with her. The climax of the film comes when all 3 guys, plus the hit man, plus the dead boyfriend's twin brother, end up converging on Randy's house. There is a very bloody, in slow motion, shootout which results in one good guy and one bad guy getting killed. Jewel rides off with the hit man, "Oh, you have a house..." right after a dumpster falls on Reiser after he escapes the bloodbath in the house. The comedic story of Jewel and her effect on the various guys could have been done well, and entertainingly, with little or no explicit violence and without all the explicit foul language. Unfortunately these amateur writers and directors don't understand that the viewing audience have higher standards. They also insulted a large fraction of their audience with the scene where the priest throws aside the hosts to use a sacred chalice to drink wine. That is not comedy.I do want to point out that Reba McEntire did a fine job as the shrink. She now has her own TV show, and is a natural actor.
dumb
posted on 15 Nov 2008this movie was dumb. I could not stand it. Liv Tyler is a horrible actress. She tries to be cool. And in the movie she plays a whore. Matt Dillion and John Goodman did a good job with their parts. But not liv tyler. I can't stand that other guy from mad about you either. I cannot beilve that Reba McEntire was in this movie. Even though she only had a small part, this movie was too low for her.
How can this much talent do this badly?
posted on 03 Nov 2008Okay - I'll admit, I picked this up because Liv Tyler is Gorgeous and I've never seen Paul Reiser do a really bad movie.Well, Liv Tyler is still Gorgeous. But, all current propaganda aside, men just aren't this stupid. Okay - I'm not a particularly attractive man, and I'm certainly not wealthy. If I said Liv Tyler wouldn't turn my head, I'd be lying through my teeth. But not forever. Even I, as an unattractive man, would catch on to what a user this woman is pretty quickly. Yet an experienced police officer, a high-priced attorney, and a good-looking bartender are led by their testosterone for ages? And by a woman that just want's a nice house, is intelligent enough to know what she want's, yet is so STUPID she hasn't thought to land a man with an income commensurate with her taste's? I could be wrong, but I suspect if Liv Tyler wants to marry a man for money, she might have the looks to pull it off.Thank god I bought a used DVD. I'd have never forgiven myself for paying full price.Note to Liv Tyler. I'm poor, but I have a DVD player and a job. If these are really that hard to come by for a woman of your looks, I promise that you can come on by and we can watch Hopscotch together - <G>
A Mediocre Film You'll Want To Root For Anyway
posted on 29 Oct 2008There are mediocre films that one yawns one's way through and then forgets about the moment the end titles roll, and there are mediocre films that one roots for, maybe even views a second time desperately hoping to find some shred of quality, some sliver of greatness upon which to base a recommendation.
McCool's is one of the latter. This movie tries hard; it tries hard to be funny, it tries hard to be sexy, and it tries hard with its artistic ambitions. On some level, it succeeds at all three, although its successes ultimately are both fleeting and infrequent.
Certainly, there are some funny sequences, ranging the gamut from understated "Coenesque" humor to broad physical comedy. Liv Tyler is certainly sexy enough to carry her role as the object of desire. The snow-globe motif, as realized in the brilliantly executed (no pun intended) climactic scene, as well as a few nice foreshadowing momemts, are certainly artistic. Yet, somehow, it just doesn't add up to a "quality" film.
The DVD includes the typical trailers, "deleted scenes," and obligatory alternate ending. None of which are particularly insightful or special.
A good "back-up" pick for a trip to your neighborhood Blockbuster, but a "must see" only for the die-hard Liv Tyler fan.

You will scream: YMCA!
posted on 16 Oct 2008One Night at McCool's is one fine movie. The story is smart & hilarious. The cast really fit in. The end result, you get after watching this, is that it was such a funny and entertaining time you had. This movie Rocks! The story, about a woman, using her ultimate power ( her body ) to get absolutely whatever she wants. She doesn't care how, she only cares about getting. Liv Tyler ( back to her early charm, and about time too!) will grab all your senses, and will lead you to do anything she dreams of! Matt Dillon, as the helpless boyfriends is not bad, but I see him more as the Bad guy not the Innocent type. He is still convincing though. John Goodman, a very funny man, with a role that suits him, and only him! Michael Douglas, adds an extra dimension, with his brilliant acting, just to prove once and for all: This movie has a Great Cast! You will enjoy the story, the twists, the laughs, you will ask for more, and you will get more! This is how good this is! You will remember the Village people scene for quite some time, you will scream: YMCA! This was totally brilliant, Superb directing! You will see how one woman can play with several males! But be warned: She will play with your mind too, and you will just love it!I recommend you rent this if you are looking forward towards spending some quality time in front of TV! 8/10

Delightful
posted on 15 Aug 2009Ralph Fiennes was tormented by his love for her in Onegin.Italian men were completely captivated by her in Stealing Beauty, even Kate Hudson walked out on her husband to be on her wedding day for her in Dr T and The Women, Liv Tyler is one of the most beautiful women ever.
In One Night At McCools, she plays the most charming femme fatale to grace the silver screen for a long while, in a delightful first English language feature by Norwegian director Harald Zwart.
No man can resist her heavenly beauty and her devilish charms..Not the gullible Matt Dillon, the chivalrous and religious John Goodman, the kinky and pretentious Paul Reiser, nor the cold and professional killer Michael Douglas..They are all consumed by this beauty and pay dearly for it, in what in my opinion is one the freshest and funniest film I have seen in a while.
The script is witty and the acting top class: John Goodman for once not going over the top,Matt Dillon showing great comic potential again after There is Something About Mary, and Richard Jenkins playing the priest and Goodmans's confessor is a great surprise and his scenes though short are great
There are very funny moments in this film, especially the very last scene, which although I will not spoil it, comes unexpected and is hilarious.
I highly recommend this film !!
