Storyline
TAGLINES PLOT SUMMARY
Rich bitch Joanna hires country carpenter Dean to build a closet on her yacht. When the two don't see eye-to-eye, Dean is left unpaid while Joanna sets sail. The following day, Joanna is fished out of the sea, after falling overboard, suffering from amnesia. Dean sees a neat way to regain the money she owes him... he tells her she's his wife; that way Dean gets a free housekeeper and mother for his four kids.

Enjoyable romantic comedy
posted on 03 Aug 2009Obnoxious socialite (Goldie Hawn) falls overboard and suffers amnesia. A bitter carpenter (Kurt Russell), who'm Hawn had stiffed earlier, takes advantage of the situation and convinces her that she's the mother of his four hyper-energetic boys. Once there she cooks, cleans, cries, nearly has a nervous breakdown but ultimately grows to love her live and her family. But she's bound to be picked up by her husband sooner of later...An enjoyable romantic comedy which succeeds only because of it's irresistible and energetic cast. Story wise it's stretched, full of short cuts and improbable scenarios but it's all well done in terms of sheer entertainment. Hawn has great fun in her role and she's as charming as ever. Russell is his likable self but no matter how hard the script tries, his character is really a slime ball. Everyone else only adds to the harmless fun, particularly the four boys who are really good. Even Hector Elizondo, in a fleeting cameo, is very funny.For some reason I keep revisiting the film every once in a while, probably because it's a no-brainer fun flick that delivers some genuine laughs. I'd recommend it.

posted on 31 Jul 2009There is undoubtedly something about this movie I love. Granted...and I can't stress this strongly enough...this is NOT my kind of flick. I normally would run full speed ahead away from a dopey comedy...and worse, a dopey *romantic* comedy. Bleck! BUT THIS MOVIE IS JUST PLAIN FUNNY! I don't even know what it is that strikes me about it. I think Russell and Hawn are perfect in these rolls and their comedy plays off of each other so effortlessly. Yes, it's a feel good silly comedy, but one that delivers several laughs. Like I said, this type of movie would be last on my list, but I've found myself really liking it. **1/2 out of 4.
A fresh film, with a few good laughs.
posted on 28 Jul 2009Overboard may have been a failure, but it has a fresh plot with a few good laughs to it. The couple are perfect in this film, and Goldie is stunning. We will probably never see another Russel/Hawn film, at least not where the couple do so well together. Overall it has a good entertainment value.
Hilariously Goldie
posted on 08 Jun 2009This movie got such bad reviews in its theatrical release that I never saw it until one night stuck at a friend's, housesitting..and since I love Goldie Hawn I decided to pop it in. I was NOT disappointed! Goldie is at her comedic best, but it is Kurt Russell and the cast of very talented kids that provide the most laughs. This movie is a hilarious romantic comedy and you will love it. It's not quite as funny as "Foul Play" but very funny moments abound. Get it, you won't regret it!
Goldie Almost Saves It
posted on 08 Jun 2009If you liked the Steve Martin version of Cheaper By The Dozen, then this movie might be just the one for you. Goldie Hawn shows a good acting range going from self-centered idle rich to caring down-home wife and mother. The plot is pretty improbable and the transformation of the kids from all-out-brats to model children is even more so.
The scenes move the movie right along and if you're waiting for the chocolate cream pie in the face, it's there. We had to laugh at some of the goofy things they put in. In general it was pretty predictable and not nearly as fun as her top movies.
Always watch it.
posted on 08 May 2009I own my own copy, but watch it whenever it comes on. I have a certain number of movies I do this with. It is a true fairy tale for men and women alike. For two people from different worlds come together is always a magical treat.(When it works). The fact that they not only bring a child into this situation but four, and they all seem to fall for this lady who is blind to the fact. I do not care for the parts with Mr Staton is partying on the boat with what looks to me like teenagers, but I Guess this was put in to show how shallow some people can get. ALthough I would like to know What type of dog Shitacki is. All in all This will always be one of my favorites.

posted on 08 May 2009From director Garry Marshall (Beaches, Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride), this is a good old fashioned change of personality comedy romance film. Basically Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn) is a rich bitch with her own luxury yacht, and she hires carpenter Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell) to make her some new shelves for her shoes, and he rants at her when she is not pleased and refuses to pay. The following day though he sees the way to get his revenge, she is found washed up after falling overboard her yacht, and has no memory of who she is. Dean takes her to his home, calling her Annie, and tells her she's married to him and they have four kids together: (all introduced in this film) Charlie (Big's Jared Rushton), Joey (Jeffrey Wiseman), Travis (Brian Price) and Greg (Jamie Wild). For a while she can't cope with this life she thinks she had, and Dean plans to keep her living like this she's paid her debt. After a while though it seems she and the kids are getting used to life together, and Dean too may be really falling for her. At one or two points, he comes close to revealing the truth when her memory flashes, but she is found eventually by her bastard fiancée. She realises she has to go to the way she was before, but she finds it difficult to remember absolutely everything, and soon enough she, and Dean go to each other and live happily ever after (and the kids prepare their Christmas lists knowing about her fortune). Also starring Edward Herrmann as Grant Stayton III, Katherine Helmond as Edith Mintz, Mike Hagerty as Billy Pratt and Roddy McDowall as Andrew. There are plenty of good laughs seeing Hawn suffer, the messy moments, and quite a good romantic element too, a good charming film. Very good!
Incredibly Believable
posted on 27 Apr 2009I usually find plots centering around amnesia hard to believe, but this movie pulls it off, regardless of the near impossibility.
I'm glad to see the release is anamorpic widescreen, however, I would recommend buying "Overboard - Ein Goldfisch fällt ins Wasser" from Amazon.de Check out the price (considering exchange rates) and how many audio tracks of different languages they have included on that version. This on amazon.com only has English. Not too savvy for those of us who like to brush up our foriegn languages.

posted on 15 Dec 2008I love this movie and despite having it on DVD always have to watch it when it is on TV.It is full of excellent performances, especially by Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn and not forgetting the wonderful Roddie McDowell.It is a wonderful feel-good movie and I would recommend it to anyone.It has so many wonderfully funny moments like when Dean picks up "Annie" from the sofa and she says "No, don't put me in the water barrel again" and my particular favourite when she is introduced to Dean's youngest son, Joe, who talks in a funny voice and she says "a falsetto child".Definitely one to watch again and again.
One of my all-time favorites
posted on 28 Oct 2008This is one of my all time favorites, up there with "Moonstruck". I just love Goldie Hawn and I really didn't understand why this movie didn't get better reviews and do better at the box office. I didn't see it until it was released in video. The concept and the plot lines were funny and unique. The contrast between the working family and the ultra rich one, the ending where she chooses to have a life where she makes a difference instead of just wasting time, and he values her as she deserves to be valued in the end. There are parts of the movie that could have been better; some of the supporting roles were not done all that well. The rich woman's mother was great, Roddy McDowell was great, and the rich self-centered husband was funny. The movie was good family entertainment. Good for you, Goldie and Kurt.
Irrational sitcom with bright moments...and yet much mean-spiritedness
posted on 22 Oct 2008Goldie Hawn has fun playing a rich shrew who locks horns with sweaty carpenter Kurt Russell and tosses his tools off her yacht and into the ocean; later, after she's been diagnosed with amnesia, vengeful Kurt (and his gaggle of pre-teen sons) take Goldie in and convince her she's a wife and mother to the unruly brood. Slight comic premise doesn't make much logical sense (sure, the carpenter wants pay-back, but why would he invite a woman he hates into his home? She's still the same harpy as before, with or without her memory). The obvious rapport between real-life couple Hawn and Russell keeps the film going, but supporting players Roddy McDowall, Edward Herrmann and Katherine Helmond never get a truly funny line. Garry Marshall directs in his usual scrappy, frustrating fashion, but even his anything-for-a-laugh agenda can't overcome the mean-spirited undermining here (as well as a few sub-plots which go nowhere). The final moments are well done, however, and Hawn's energy is always engaging. **1/2 from ****
Laugh Out Loud Funny!!!
posted on 17 Oct 2008It's a zany mix-up in this dazzling comedy starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. This is a riches-to-rags story for anyone who loves practical jokes. Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, a pampered and self-centered wife of a presumptous yacht owner. With their boat stuck in port for repairs, Joanna hires carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell)to redo her closet space. But after the job is complete and Dean asks to be paid, Joanna flat out refuses to him. When Joanna falls overboard and gets a case of amnesia, Dean jumps on the opportunity for a little payback. He tell Joanna that she is his wife and the mother of four wild and unruly boys! So check out this hilarious movie, and be prepared to laugh all the way through it!
3rd favorite movie of all time
posted on 13 Sep 2008Like this is my 3rd favorite video. i own this one too. Just bought it. Couldn't find it anywhere's except Fred Myers. It comes on T.V a lot. But it don't matter to me , i watch it whenever. I love this movie so much. i would give it 10/10. i love Goldie hawn. and this is my favorite movie she is in.

posted on 20 Apr 2008"Overboard" is a great movie. At first though, I didn't think I'd like it; my mom got it and I thought it would be boring, but it's hilarious! The kids are funny, and Goldie Hawn arguably did her best job ever as an actress in this one, portraying two roles, funny in both. The guy in the Dodge commercials, Grant, is rather funny also. It is one of the better plots I have seen, and it is a movie you should enjoy.
Ok Movie, DVD Has No Extras
posted on 16 Aug 2009This is a good movie to rent, but if you are looking for the DVD to contain some extras to add to the value, there are none. I found the picture and sound to be no better than VHS.
