Sometimes there's only one thing left to say.
His life ended. Now, a new one will begin.
Holly Kennedy (Hillary Swank) is beautiful, smart and married to the love of her life— a passionate, funny, and impetuous Irishman named Gerry (Gerard Butler). So when Gerry's life is taken by an illness, it takes the life out of Holly. The only one who can help her is the person who is no longer there. Nobody knows Holly better than Gerry. So it's a good thing he planned ahead. Before he died, Gerry wrote Holly a series of letters that will guide her, not only through her grief, but in rediscovering herself. The first message arrives on Holly's 30th birthday in the form of a cake, and to her utter shock, a tape recording from Gerry, who proceeds to tell her to get out and "celebrate herself". In the weeks and months that follow, more letters from Gerry are delivered in surprising ways, each sending her on a new adventure and each signing off in the same way; P.S. I Love You. Holly's mother (Kathy Bates) and best friends (Gina Gershon) and Denise (Lisa Kudrow), begin to worry that Gerry's letters are keeping Holly tied to the past, but in fact, each letter is pushing her further into a new future. With Gerry's words as her guide, Holly embarks on a touching, exciting and often hilarious journey of rediscovery in a story about marriage, friendship and how a love so strong can turn the finality of death into a new beginning for life.

SELFLESS LOVE!!
posted on 21 Aug 2009This movie touched my heart as well as my daughters. This is my Harry Met Sally new, favorite, romantic film! Tommorrow is never promised to any of us and the fact that anyone would take time to write passionate letters while coping with terminal illness in itself is selfless! I ENJOYED THIS FILM TREMENDOUSLY!! I do feel Hillary looked a bit harsh for the character....- keep seeing her casting in "BOYS D0N'T CRY" but the storyline was in tact and the male character was sooh sexy!
Electrolux Oxygen canister vacuum
posted on 21 Aug 2009We are pleased with this purchase, the vacuum is easy to use, efficient and quiet. Only problem is that the cord will not stay out (always in the rewind mode). Since the machine has a 2 year warranty this is only a slight problem and while we wait for the new rewind mechanism a clothspin works just fine!
Disappointing
posted on 17 Aug 2009If you plan on reading the book or you have read the book DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE! I loved the book and read it in less than a week but when I watch this movie I almost turned it off. I was sooo disappointed in how far away from the real story that this movie went. You may like it if you don't ever intend to read the book.
Love this movie!
posted on 11 Aug 2009I originally saw this movie in the theatre and loved it so much that I pre-ordered on Amazon. There aren't too many movies that can bring a tear to your eye and make you fall in love with all of the character's, while making you feel like you are experiencing their heartbreak and sharing in their joy. Excellent performance by Hillary Swank and cast.
DARE I SAY....CHICK FLICK? BUT.........
posted on 03 Aug 2009I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT ASIDE FROM ALL THE GOOD OR BAD SOMEONE MAY HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS FLICK- IF YOU'RE NOT IN A GOOD PLACE RIGHT NOW...OR MAYBE RECENTLY HAVE ENDED A RELATIONSHIP- BYPASS THIS FOR NOW. ITS A GOOD MOVIE, MAKE NO MISTAKE. BUT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DEPRESS THE EVER LOVING **** OUT OF YOU TOO. IF YOU KNEW A COUPLE WHO HAD LOST A CHILD- YOU WOULD KEEP THEM FROM WATCHING DEAD POETS SOCIETY. IF YOU'VE RECENTLY LOST A SIGNIFICANT OTHER- AND I WAS YOUR FRIEND- I'D KEEP YOU AWAY FROM THIS. TRUE- " ITS JUST A MOVIE" BUT IT PUSHES BUTTONS... BELIEVE ME. ON A LIGHTER NOTE- THIS IS THE MOST HUMAN IVE EVER SEEN KATHY BATES PLAY AND I DONT KNOW IF IT WAS DONE ON PURPOSE- BUT LISA KUDROW LOOKS 50+.
A good life lesson
posted on 30 Jul 2009I thought this movie was fantastic. Great moral behind the story and just an overall great cast. I agree with others that with Swank, it's hard for her to be so goofy and funny because she plays such a great serious actress in most of her films, but she delivered this role very well. This movie was a tear jerker, Gerard Butler is hot and great actor, and he does play that perfect man.
It touched me when I realized how hard it is to be a grieving widow but how amazing to have experienced such a great love, and Gerry is her guide...
SEE IT! It's a keeper!
A really wonderful movie
posted on 28 Jul 2009I actually had low expectations for this movie, and I will admit that I was mainly interested in it because of Gerard Butler - he is beee-yooo-ti-ful... :)
Also, Hilary Swank is a wonderful actress, very talented, a double Oscar winner, so I figured, I would check this movie out. I am also not usually much of a chick flick watcher (even though I am a chick), I'm usually a big action adventure movie fan, intense dramas, that type of thing. I expected to have this movie on in the background, not really pay attention to it, work on other things, and only look up when Gerard Butler was on screen. So, from that perspective, this movie was a very big, very pleasant surprise.
Pretty much from the get-go, this movie grabbed my attention and lo and behold I didn't do any work at all while it was on (I tried a couple of times, but then I just had to rewind something I missed, so I happily gave up). A big part of this was the fact that I expected predictable dialogue, and a predictable story-line. A big credit to this movie belongs in the fact that it had very sharp writing, it actually dealt with things that seemed real-life. Of course there are lines here & there in the movie that are "hollywood", but for the most part, this movie has a lot of heart.
HUGE, HUGE, HUGE credit for this movie's heart & soul must go to Hilary Swank & Kathy Bates. These two ladies do an INCREDIBLE job in their roles, they imbue them with so much authenticity, I was really taken aback. In fact so much so, this movie actually had me crying repeatedly through it (thank heavens I didn't see this movie in public, that would have been very embarrassing & I would have most certainly run out of kleenex). Plus, it had me laughing in between! What an emotional ride this movie was, and I was somewhat prepared for "heart-string pulling" because I knew the premise of the movie.
In fact, it has been days since I watched this movie, and I keep thinking about it. It moved me, not only with the emotional journey of Hilary's character, what she learned, how she grew, but because it also makes you think about your own life. I find myself reflecting on my own relationships, appreciating them more, it really touched me. It also has a secondary theme about Hilary's character trying to find happiness in what she does for a living - lessons in finding your passion, and stop doing what doesn't make you happy, what you may hate, for a living.
This movie also has a measure of unexpected outcomes, which is a breath of fresh air. So many times we can predict what is going to happen, then when a movie doesn't do that, it's such a delight. This movie has lovely journeys of forgiveness, selfishness, confusion, what are our lives all about, who knows, but we keep putting one foot in front of the other.
I highly recommend this movie as a worthy watch. I loved it. And I want to visit Ireland soooo bad now!!! My heart is still tender, from the highs, the lows, the questions this movie raised. Hilary - wow, you are amazing in this role...I hope you will get the recognition you deserve for it.

Two hours of self-pity
posted on 20 Jul 2009I love Swank & Butler, & Bates.
The movie begins (uncomfortably) with a very contrived fight scene that doesn't work and isn't staged well. Butler, while beautiful, only seems at home in the scene in Ireland. All the other flashbacks never work quite right. Bates is good as the Mom, but all through the movie I felt I was missing something.
The friends setup doesn't work - there's no chemistry between Kudrow, Gershon & Swank. It always seems awkward. Also awkward was the one-night stand Swank has with Billy Gallagher. That just did not seem in keeping with her personality throughout the movie. How odd.
The kareoke scenes were TORTURE.
Literally two-hours of self-pity for a young woman who's lost her husband. Connick Jr.'s Daniel wasn't silly or unlikable enough so you end ticked off because you're led to believe they'll be together.
Not much about this movie was likable. The actor who played Billy Gallagher was very good and him telling Holly stories about Jerry was endearing. That's about the best thing I can say. And the Irish scenery was gorgeous. I can't recommend this movie.
CRUDE ROMANCE? YUK!
posted on 20 Jul 2009What happened to the line between what is good taste and poor taste. Gutter talk in my opinion is not appropriate for Romance Movie. Top it off with miscasting - maybe just me, but Hilary Swank is UGLY and there was ZERO chemistry between her and G. Butler. And Kathy Bates cast as her mom? - that was just WRONG. And the sister...first, she couldn't act and second, another complete miscast. If the movie had a different female lead, different mom, and different sister, a rewritten script with all of the profanity thrown out the window, different camera placement, and some proper scene transitions, then maybe, maybe it would have been OK. My better half has this aversion to movies that use FLASH CARD TIME PLATES to keep track of time. He says it is a clear sign someone didn't write the script or want to spend money/time to scout and shoot sets properly.(GREAT CONTRAST to show how it CAN BE DONE would be "Nottinghill"). There seems to be a great deal of mediocrity in films these days. Doesn't anyone know how to make a LOVE STORY without crudeness?
P.S. - This film is boring!
posted on 12 Jul 2009I don't know where to start. This movie could have been good. It was a nice departure from the regular happy-ever-after tear jerkers we normally get from the studios these days. Unfortunately, there really wasn't a story. Well, not a believable one, anyway.
Hillary Swank was horribly miscast. She is not the least bit feminine, and I think the movie makers realized this because they spent far too much time having her prance around in her undergarments trying to convince us otherwise. She needs to eat a meal or two! Her lisp (or overbite) was very distracting and it was an awkward performance. Most of the time her character was whining and complaining. It was very hard to believe that her husband Jerry (the gorgeous Mr. Butler) would have ever been attracted to her.
There was a secondary story involving Harry Connick, Jr. that showed some promise. He did a fine job of portraying a cynic, burned one too many times by the opposite sex. His love connection with Swank's character is painfully wasted in the end. There was a very disappointing scene in which they kiss and decide it feels like they were kissing their respective siblings. This kind of scene has been done before and better in "Back to the Future".
If you feel like doing nothing other than reveling in Gerard Butler's beauty than go ahead and spend the afternoon watching this overdone, drawn out, waste of time.
Ended up being a terrific movie, glad I went to the theater to see it
posted on 06 Jul 2009Wow! What a great movie, much to my surprise. I went for only 2 reasons. The #1 reason - Gerard Butler who's GORGEOUS & unbelievably talented. The #2 reason - Hilary Swank (2 time Academy Award Winner), who's good in everything. I figured that if they "signed on" then it's got to be a good show. It was. I was apprehensive at first in regard to the plot, a dead guy who wrote letters to be sent to his widow after he dies. I thought it would be lame. It is such a great show. Hilary is such a good actress, right away I felt like I was in her shoes, she made you feel like YOU were the widow experiencing the denial, anger, etc. Gerard no doubt scored major "chick points" with his charming performance. However I don't think he really even had to try too hard as he's very talented. He got to use his natural accent and real first name for his character. The "Gerry" in the movie wasn't too much of a stretch for Gerard as in real life he seems to be a very unique, energetic/lively, fun-loving guy. Oh and the bonus was his smile & those eyes. They will melt you every time. I doubt there was any woman that didn't completely fall in love with him during his few appearances in the movie. It was all very believable, nothing was far-fetched. Thank you Hilary & Gerard for such an emotionally-charged movie; denial, anger, love, comedy, etc. Absolutely worth watching again & again. The music is great also. All I know is that I left the theater crying and thought seriously about life being too short & to make the most of the time we do have! Love you Gerard!
A Charming, Exciting, Facinating, Interesting Romantic Comedy
posted on 06 Jul 2009Without any kind of interesting beginning, there follows an abounding increase of hilarious comedy! Their give-and-take marriage of nine years, could have been much more successful for Holly and Geery. After their numerous battles and continual make-ups, I became caught-up in a greatly improved story-plot.
My favorite personality was Holly played by Hilary Swank! Quite a uniquely romantic role after The Million Dollar Baby. As this story developed, I became more enamored by Kathy Bates as Mother and the bar-tender William played by Harry Connick,Jr. After Geery's hysterical Memorial Service, the movie evolved into one great, compelling, fascinating Romantic Comedy!
The next uniquely interesting character was the Irishman, William! When Geery's carefully planned letters came to Holly, one was a suggested trip for her to travel to Ireland. There she came upon the deceased's former friend from childhood, William. Those letters continued for the first year's absence of her Beloved. Her three close girl friends insisted she was overdue for another sexually stimulating experience! For me it was a close tie between the romantic escapade and the beauty of the Irish country side.
All-in-all this was the most compelling, entertaining, and fascinating romantic comedy yet for me. I recommend this fascinating comedy. Retired Chaplain Fred W. Hood
"P.S. I LOVE YOU" MOVIE REVIEW BY MICHAEL ELLIANO
posted on 02 Jul 2009THIS REVIEW IS FOR MEN ONLY. WOMEN LOVE THIS STUFF AND YOU SHOULD BE READY TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS. IF YOU WATCH AFTER THIS REVIEW YOU ARE A
WIMP!!!!!!!
DRAMATIC CHICK FLICK IS THE CATEGORY THIS GOES UNDER. HILLARY SWANK IS OUTSTANDING AND CARRIES THIS FILM EVERY INCH OF THE WAY. BUT THIS IS NOT THE DATE MOVIE A MAN WOULD EVER WATCH. THERE ARE MAJOR HOLES IN THE STORY AND THE FOLLOWING RUIN IT....
ONE: WHEN SHE "BEDS" HER DEAD HUSBAND'S BEST FRIEND. FOR ONE NO WAY. IF A MAN NEVER INTRODUCES YOU TO HIS BEST FRIEND, THEN HE IS NOT HIS BEST FRIEND. NO PICTURES ETC....NOT REALISTIC. EVEN IF HE WAS HIS BEST FRIEND AND DIDN'T INTRODUCE EVER, THERE'S A REASON.
TWO: CONNICK IS A NICE GUY BUT THIS MOVIE MAKES HIM LOOK LIKE A WOMAN'S GAY BEST FRIEND. TOO BAD.
THREE: IN VERY LITTLE TIME SHE BECOMES A TOP SHOE DESIGNER. NOT LIKELY, ALTHOUGH SHE DOES HAVE A GAY BEST FRIEND NOW.
FOUR: KILL THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE FIRST TEN MINUTES. WORKED IN THE MOVIE BUT NOT REALLY GREAT FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES.
FIVE: STRANDED ON A LAKE AND RESCUED BY THE BEST FRIEND WHO SO HAPPENS TO WORK THERE TOO. YEAH RIGHT.
SORRY, BUT THIS MOVIE IS FULL OF HOLES AND WOMEN WILL LOVE IT. LET THEM WATCH IT ALONE AND GO OUT AND FIND A GOOD "MAN" MOVIE. SOMETHING WITH JESSICA ALBA IN IT ALSO WORKS.
Great movie - most powerful the first time watched
posted on 30 Jun 2009This was such a great movie. I don't usually cry in movies but I was sobbing in this one, but don't let that turn you off because this is the type of movie that makes you laugh and cry and the same time so while I was sobbing I was cracking up. It is so good and I recommend that everyone watch it.
P.S. - I'm bored
posted on 30 Jun 2009Sloth-like in pace, poorly editied, with many trite scenes. I'm sure I'll get hammered for this review. I don't mind a decent chic flic, but this one trudges along with many dull scenes and overall lack of imagination or humor. Of course, after she receives just the right amount of letters from her dead husband, she gets her groove back. Ho-hum.
In Blu-ray a visual feast
posted on 26 Jun 2009How this movie escaped public acclaim in theater release is mysterious. Cute, intelligently romantic comedies usually find an audience before they are released to DVD. Although $53 million is a decent box office gross (Notting Hill did twice that) almost no one ever saw this gem until it hit HBO. Experiencing it in 1080i made me convinced that 1080p would be spectacular and I was not disappointed.
The Irish scenes in particular, with their fields of wildflowers and greening meadows, are almost dreamlike. Such cinematographic romanticism as a set for a tale of true love and discovery, makes PS I Love You a necessary buy for any decent Blu-ray library.

A charming date movie
posted on 21 Aug 2009"PS I Love You" is a delightful film about a young widow and how her husband, knowing he was dying, left her a legacy of letters designed to encourage her into living again after his death. Hilary Swank delivers a high-energy performance opposite the always sexy Gerard Butler. Lisa Kudrow is a hoot as Hilary's friend. Gina Gershon, James Marsters (Spike from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame), Harry Connick, Jr., and Kathy Bates round out the cast. The locations are rich and beautiful! Even the apartment where Hilary lives and the pub her mother owns are almost characters, themselves. This film made me laugh - the priest singing at the Irish wake was particularly amusing. It made me cry - too many times to name. It made me laugh while I was crying. It is a lovely movie filled with lots of surprises!
