The Truth Can't Hide Forever

PLOT SUMMARY

After a plane crash, a young therapist, Claire (Anne Hathaway), is assigned by her mentor (Andre Braugher) to counsel the flight's five survivors. When they share their recollections of the incident — which some say include an explosion that the airline claims never happened — Claire is intrigued by Eric (Patrick Wilson), the most secretive of the passengers. Just as Claire's professional relationship with Eric — despite her better judgment — blossoms into a romance, the survivors begin to disappear mysteriously, one by one. Claire suspects that Eric may hold all the answers and becomes determined to uncover the truth, no matter the consequences.

The horror...the horror

1:) Anne Hathaway...NOT HOT to people who don't resemble plain paper.2:) The aesthetic value of this film is practically nil. If you are a plebeian this film might just be for you. It contains all the qualities most idiotic people seem to grasp on to i.e. I can't take tragedy, don't know how to handle opposition, am an emotional hole just now experiencing life when I should have been living all the while.3:) The love interest between the two characters uhm Connie or whatever the broads name is and the "revived" douche-bag made me practically want to vomit. It was so, boring.4:) the reason this people disappeared was due to the fact that this film was just that bad! Duece, Dex

A Blatant Rip Off in My Opinion

This would be an "OK" movie completely by itself. It would not be a great movie, and I don't even think I would say it is a "good' movie. I do like Anne Hathaway as an actress. She exhibits a decent range in the category of well-liked characters. I look forward to reviewing her performance in Rachel Getting Married as something completely different. However, I cannot believe she would be willing to do this movie because of it's actual ending. I read the alert about including any spoilers, so I will not give away the ending, but it is the EXACT same situation as another VERY famous movie. If you do not see the correlation, then you don't know anything about movies! You would not even need to have a large collection of viewed movies or of screenings to figure this out entirely on your own. This movie offers no originality whatsoever, and the writer should be accused of plagiarism. I do not see how anyone involved with this project could allow it to go forward due to it's copied ending. I would certainly not recommend this title to anyone!

Not too original, but far better than nearly all of the big-budget crap that gets thrown at us these days.

For someone who had truly expected this thing to be yet another dumb "evil corporation's conspiracy" movie, I was relieved by the supernatural ending, even though it was an obvious rip-off of "Sixth Sense". (Most comparisons to "Fearless" are moronic, though.) But who cares? Sure, the romance between the two lead characters drags on, is almost like being transported into a Julia Roberts/Richard Gere, Clooney/Pfeiffer, Meg Ryan/Cage, or Henniffffer Lopez/Matthew McConaughey romantic comedy/drama, but otherwise the story and direction are solid. Besides, Hathaway and Wilson are far more bearable than all of the above-mentioned airheads. The interesting surprise ending makes up for some of the occasional near-tedium in the first half. I believe the movie also gets away with implying that all the dead plane-crash victims live in a world that is in many ways identical to our own - which kind of begs the question of whether there is really any point of having death as the termination of one "stage". But beggars can't be choosers. I can't nitpick at every solid film I watch these days...The low overall IMDb rating has to do with the simple fact that "Passengers" wasn't properly hyped. People need to have a filmic product shoved into their faces with the persistence of a wheel-running hamster and the might of a 16-ton weight. To get the typical cinema-going sheep to click "10/10" on this site for a movie, one needs to promote it as if it were Spielberg's or had Brad Pitt in it. Then you wait for your movie to get a bunch of Oscars, and watch with delight as the rating average suddenly rises. Hysteria reaches its highpoint as it feeds other people's hysteria, who then become convinced that a movie will be terrific even before they see it. It's sort of like mass-hypnosis of the dim-witted and easily impressed.Easily swayed idiots.Speaking of morons... http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Fedor8/the_150_lowest_iqs_in_music

Very watchable, just not a masterpiece.

I'd like to start off by saying I began watching this movie with a little suspicion, because I checked the ratings here and they weren't really high.Well, my suspicion wasn't necessary. This movie isn't all about action, explosions and that sort of things. What is does have is a heart, it shows the bond between people and it explains why that bond takes place. Just not in a corny way, this is more of a mix between real-life personalities, suspension, and a big plot-twist at the end kind of like Hitchcock did back in the days. Just not that elaborate. Some comments on this movie say that it lacks originality, but what movie doesn't do that these days ? Almost everything has already been done over and over again. As concerns the quality of acting, it's just good. Nothing more but certainly nothing less. It's nice to see Anne Hathaway play a different sort of role, besides comedy. Her co-star Patrick Wilson also performs on a high wire. Andre Braugher and David Morse are good at supporting roles and thats is simply what they did in this one. You can't say that the acting wasn't good, therefore I feel sorry that it hasn't been properly promoted because it would have had some potential to getting to be a popular movie. Conclusion: Like I said in the beginning, it's good, just not a masterpiece. I suggest you watch it and go with the flow, you won't regret it.

A Nutshell Review: Passengers

posted on 02 Aug 2009

Anne Hathaway stars in no less than three films being released this month alone in Singapore. There's Rachel Getting Married, the upcoming Bride Wars, and Passengers. Amongst the three, and I'm counting my chickens before they hatch, Rachel Getting Married is a must watch to see how Hathaway has nailed it as a credible actress, while Bride Wars from the trailer does suggest she has some comedic flair, and this one, well, is one of those attempts at her trying to diversify. She did credible, but still couldn't shun away from being a pretty vase in her Claire Summers role. But she uses it to her advantage here, as her struggling grief councilor character uses her charm to disarm, and is getting used to all the unwanted male attention courtesy of patient Eric (Patrick Wilson), who is one amongst the group of an airplane crash survivors that she's tasked to work with. Two separate threads develop here, one on the romantic front with a clash of morals given a conflict of interest with a patient, and the other some creepy mystery with regards to the shrinking size of her group therapy class. The former thread is easy to follow, since it's all about Eric and Claire playing games with each other, with every approach met with icy cold defense, until of course persistence finally paying off. Don't expect any sparks to fly as both Hathaway and Wilson felt as if they're going through the motions with their characters. The latter thread is where the fun should be, with its brewing conspiracy theory with the airline's involvement to something sinister, given contradictory reports with the survivors' experience, as well as shadowy figures following everyone's movement. However, Ronnie Christensen's sleight of hand technique can be detected and seen a mile away. In its buildup, suspense wasn't considered, and it plodded on with issues and unfinished business being piled one on top of another, though credit must be given to David Morse in his creepy rendition as an airlines representative, as do Andre Braugher and Dianne Wiest. By the time the movie rolls around its half way mark, those alert can already know what the big revelation will be. Which is nothing groundbreaking already since a number of films already use similar plot devices and revelation that it's no longer surprising, but the norm. I only felt that the revelation could have been less clumsy and made clearer, given the many bewildered responses heard all around the cinema hall.Passengers is one of those films that you don't expect to see on a plane's inflight entertainment system, together with the likes of Flightplan and the first Final Destination. It does boast a spectacular plane in distress scene, though it dangled that prospect for the longest time before delivering its effects laden payload to the audience.

Umm....Not so good

As far as my opinion this movie is based on an impossible story. But I enjoyed the last 20 minutes. According to the genre this is not an typical horror movie. Its a full of drama and little bit thrill and action. It's a single time watching movie. Since there was no publicity for this film, my expectations for it were pretty low.A film where only cast makes the difference, in fact without the skills of Patrick Wilson and Anne Hathaway "Passengers" would have just been a melodramatic mess. ITS LACK OF ORIGINALITY...See it guys but its not a typical Anna's movie. Have a good time. May this comment will helpful to others.

Truly Wonderful

Passengers may not be a masterpiece to some people, it may not be amazing to others, it may not be wonderful to anyone, but it is to me. Passengers gripped me from the beginning and kept me thinking until they revealed the twist, and what a shocking twist it was. The ending is rather emotional and is very easy to put yourself in either characters place, which makes it all the more scary. Anne Hathaway did a phenomenal job. I would not say it is a horror, I would go with a drama/suspense.Overall a very powerful, shocking drama that will have you guess, who, what, where, when, and most of all, why? This is a definite must see!

Anne Hathaway's Career Is Becoming Like Skiing.... It Has No Choice But To Go Downhill

posted on 13 Jul 2009

Passengers is a mediocre new thriller. It deserves a razzie.... but I've seen worse. All in all, it's not a total disaster, but it is a disaster. Anne Hathaway stars as therapist Claire Summers, who gets 6 people who survived a plane crash. These characters are either too mean or too nice for their own good. The passengers then begin to fade off one by one. Throughout the movie I thought it was just because Claire is a bad therapist. But not even a bad movie can have a reason like that, even though the actual reason is pretty stupid. I admit, though, Anne Hathaway, and Patrick Wilson as patient Eric are both very good. It's a movie that, even though it is bad, it's perfect for a boring night with nothing better to do. I could see someone watching when bored, or just for the performances. Even though I say that, I still think it would be better to just not see it. It's awful, sure, but it has its bright spots. I didn't like it at all, but I liked the two leads, and it's good for entertainment when nothing else is at the video store to rent. A good cast somewhat wasted, even know the two talented leads make it bearable. I say skip it, even with its bright spots.

Any pilots notice error in crash scene?

posted on 13 Jul 2009

I thought the movie was excellent. The music was appropriate and very good. All seemed realistically shown except one thing jumped out at me the beginning of the movie. The aircraft was obviously a modern Boeing, with wing-lets, glass cockpit, modern interior at flight attendant station, fan engine catching on fire, but at the crash scene one engine cowling burning at the scene was from an older aircraft, perhaps a 737-200. And in the special effects section under analysis of the crash, it shows the graphic depiction of an engine shape that would be fitting to the other representations of the modern aircraft. I would like to know if I am mistaken or correct?

A Twilight Zone Episode at Best

Please, save yourself, your money, and your sanity. I'm sorry, I love Anne Hathaway, I love twist endings, I REALLY love dark psychological thrillers....FAIL, FAIL, FAIL... on all counts. This movie is so schizophrenic, I wanted a shot of Thorazine to get through it.Maybe I missed it, but they never gave the year this was supposed to be set in, so I'm guessing late 80's due to lack of cell phones, internet, etc.Hey, keep insulting M. Night Shyamalan, but man, he did this WAY better.

Very Surprised

posted on 09 Jul 2009

I really loved this movie. The ending is a total surprise. Maybe the writer could have worked a little more on the characters, but overall I thought their performances were terrific. Anne Hathaway was great. It was a change from the typical movies I watch, and was a refreshing surprise to see something different. I also thought it was filmed very well, and definitely agree that it is a drama with some special effects added. The story keeps you going, wondering what is going on all the time. No real dry spots anywhere. I am surprised that this movie did not get a better rating by movie buffs. I would definitely give it a thumbs up to see this movie as it was very entertaining and intriguing to watch. I will definitely recommend it to my friends.

Decent, Intriguin, perfect for a lazy afternoon

posted on 01 Jul 2009

Not what i was expecting. Judging from the plot summary, i thought i was going to see a decent thriller, but what the film was, is more of a drama with thriller moments. The plot, i think could have been a lot stronger if it was given more time in the writing process, as many times during the film you fell like your watching two totally different movies at the same time. A few scenes had some unexpected "jump" moments, that literally made me jump in my seat. The moderate pacing in the film, made it easy to follow, but still not giving too much away with what was about to happen. Never once did i actually know what was going to happening in the following moment's which made the movie, even more enjoyable. The "shock" ending, i didn't see coming either. The plot was very up and down, and sketchy. It was like it jumped from the actual storyline to some romance story that was misplaced into the film. The dialog was very intriguingly smart. Many scenes the main character Claire would say something unexpectedly, and the whole films plot really shone through to a decent movie, apart from the split-genre vibe i got.The acting was really well done, and believable. "Anne Hathaway" stars as therapist "Claire" and really commit's to the role, making it seem it was born for her. She shows little expressions in the film, which is just what her character needed to really replicate what she was supposed to be in the script. "Patrick Wilson" stars as Eric, the passenger Claire forms a relationship with. The character was very mysterious, giving off a vibe, he was somehow involved with the whole thing. "Wilson" effort in the role was well done.Overall "Passengers" is a decent, intriguing watch, perfect for a lazy afternoon. My rating is 3/5

wasn't great but ending was good

Thought this was another bomb chick-flick the wife had picked out. Acting was pretty bad except for the main guy character who was likable. Hathaway was OK I guess, maybe it was just cheezy editing or something.I was about ready to fall asleep until it started getting weird about half way through. At first I thought it was your typical melodramatic nonsense. Didn't get it until the end so I give it a six for being unpredictable. The ending was pretty good. I did not expect that at all. I can usually predict about 19 out of 20 movies. This is one I didn't figure out until the end.Would have given it a seven if the acting had been better. Maybe even an eight. I'm sure this story has been told before in other versions. Anyway that's all I have to say about this one.

A very good watch

Though there are similarities in this film to others, ie... not completely original... it is a very good, very touching movie. It has its moments of intensity, its greatness in the acting and directing. Its not a classic, but with all of the mediocre works that are out there to take your money, this is one that would NOT be a waste of your time.I would highly recommend this film if you are into suspense, drama, intrigue of any nature. There are certain aspects that are left open, but so minor that it doesn't distract from the impact of the movie. All in all -- a very good watch.6 out of 10

The saddest thing is that nobody gets their airmiles refunded.

Anne Hathaway plays a grief counsellor trying to help a bunch of plane crash survivors deal with their trauma. The group, either succumbing to paranoia or being kept quiet by people with apparently sinister motives, dwindles with each session while Hathaway struggles to help her patients and to get to the bottom of the strange goings on.With a cast that includes the likes of Clea Duvall, Don Thompson, Dianne Wiest, Patrick Wilson (as a surprisingly chipper and upbeat survivor) and the magnificent David Morse (as a suspicious employee of the airline itself) there's definitely plenty to keep fans of quality acting happy. I will also happily admit that I have enjoyed Anne Hathaway in just about everything I've seen her in, she's pretty, personable and surprisingly believable even in the role she's given here because despite being charged with guiding others she makes the naive mistake of getting too close to Patrick Wilson's character and this is the type of mistake we would expect more from someone so young as opposed to anyone older who may have taken on the role. For the most part this is a solid drama with a good mix of seriousness, mild comedy, minor thrills and interesting plot developments but as the story winds along it's way the viewer can begin to think ahead and, possibly, second-guess a number of twists and turns. It's all put together rather well though so even though you start to see how things are going to pan out you still enjoy the journey getting there. At least, I did anyway.A decent film raised a notch or two by a top-quality cast.See this if you like: Fearless, The Attic Expeditions, The Survivor.

Drama drama drama

Its A Drama Film !!!This Film is not a horror movie at all, Its a strictly Drama with a twisted film of dead ghost that doesn't realize that they are already dead. Reminds me of the TV Series Twilight Zone, and could easily be shorted down to a 60 min show, so disappointed !!! What i can say is that is got good photographic pictures, and nice camera angels in the film, and the director crew has done a nice job with is. The movie looks and sounds great. The score (music), is terrific. But what ever you do don't expect to get scared a bit, because it more love, drama film. And i wouldn't rate it R.

Ghost Therapy

posted on 15 Jun 2009

After a plane crash, the inexperienced psychologist Claire Summers (Anne Hathaway) is assigned by her chief Perry (Andre Braugher) to give support and therapy to the five survivors. One of them, Eric (Patrick Wilson), is in state of euphoria and decided to change his lifestyle and Claire gives special attention to him with private sessions. Through the testimonies of the survivors, Claire finds that there was an explosion on board, while the airline representative Mr. Arkin (David Morse) blames human error for the accident. When the survivors mysteriously vanish one by one, Claire believes the air flight company is behind the disappearances. Meanwhile, Claire crosses the ethical line of her profession and has a love affair with Eric. Claire decides to find the truth about the accident and discloses dark secrets about the fate of the flight.I saw the trailer of "Passengers" and I was curious to watch this movie. Unfortunately I was disappointed with the result: the promising story is wasted in a screenplay that needed improvements. The plot is developed in a slow pace misguiding the viewer with an intriguing situation and romance, but the predictable resolution is flawed and silly. The cast has good performances and Anne Hathaway is very sweet; the direction is also good; the cinematography is beautiful; but something does not work well and is really missing in the story. The worst moment is when there is an argument in the airport, totally inconsistent with the conclusion. This DVD has just been released in Brazil in the most inappropriate moment, after the tragic crash with 228 casualties of Air France flight AF 447 that left Rio de Janeiro to Paris last week. The timing and sensitivity of the Brazilian distributor was awful. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "Passageiros" ("Passengers")

Very dull, very unsatisfying

posted on 15 Jun 2009

I would have to agree with many of the comments I have seen here already: this is a tired story line that has been done much better in other vehicles. I don't want to make any direct comparisons for fear of spoiling the 'twist'; however, the movie tends to spoil its own 'twist' by its unremarkable predictability. The pacing of this film is dreadfully slow. The acting is at best serviceable -- but at the end I felt that we should somehow care more about these characters then we do. Is that the result of weak acting or weak storyline? Maybe some of both. The ending completely fell flat. As I hinted, my wife and I had already figured out every 'twist' before they happened -- but we were still waiting for some gleaming revelation on why this was an important story and what poignant message we should take from this (after enduring everything that preceded). That shining moment never came -- just 'poof' and it was (mercifully yet utterly unsatisfyingly) done.I heartily recommend this movie with an enthusiastic 'whatever.'

Rehashed "Surprise" Ending

posted on 30 May 2009

The way the poster looked I was expecting a creepy horror thriller. However this movie turned out be a very slow cooking psychological drama. It seemed that they know a premise and an ending, but the events in between were told in an unfortunately turgid fashion. To cut that sentence short, yes, it was boring.Anne Hathaway plays grief counselor Dr. Claire Simmons, who was called on to cater to the psychological needs of the survivors of a plane crash. She was drawn to the charm and exuberance of one of them, Eric (Patrick Wilson). However, she was constantly harassed by several people which seem to show up from out of nowhere. On top of that, her patients were also disappearing mysteriously. Things finally came to a head when Claire got to read a manifest of the plane that crashed. This film wastes the appeal of its lead star Anne Hathaway, who did not fit into the rain-drenched location and story-telling. She is the main reason why this movie was worth watching (for me, at least). Supporting actors Dianne Wiest and Andre Braugher were seemingly sleepwalking along. David Morse does what he can in the antagonist role. William B. Davis makes an appearance reminiscent of his Mr. X role in the "X-Files." Its just too bad it turned out this way because this story had potential. It felt like it could have been told in a more engaging manner. It might be okay to watch on a lazy afternoon, but definitely not before a planned plane ride, nor on the plane itself!

Anne rules, very strong acting

posted on 22 May 2009

The movies i watched Anne acting was all comedy. I always think she is good, maybe comedy good. "The Devil Wears Prada", top notch. The only reason I watch "Passengers" is becoz of Anne, not becoz I knew it'd be good, but becoz I want to know how good she actually is. Jennifer Aniston is comedy good, I could hardly imagine she act "seriously". But with Anne, she surprised me.Peoples said "Passengers" is another version of "The Sixth Sense", "The Others", and I agree with them. But among these three, I love "Passengers" the most. "The Sixth Sense" is kinda tricked you to believe Bruce was still alive, "The Others" is kinda boring until the very last moment. But with "Passengers", if you have no idea about the film before you watch it, it actually makes you think it's just thrilling drama about the airline company trying to cover up the fact about the plane crash, but turned out to be supernatural mystery is just a really amazing twist. The story "Passengers" itself is fairly good and with outstanding performance of Anne, you definitely should see it.
