The vortex
posted on 10 Jul 2009Originally I saw most of these movies at the cinema when I was a child up to Number 4 and thought they were all not bad, considering I was too young to go and see Freddies latest antics. So last year I got all of them out at my store which has a multiple movie discount. I can say 1-4 were great and nic etrips down memory lane. 5 was not bad and this one was shocking, for 1989 it still seems dated like the early 80's and half the best characters are gone. Even the departure of House is noticable, and its only Jones that stops this movie from being a total bomb. It does have its funny moment such as the exploding money and the brick in the canister. Overall it is much better than the 7th movie which was an absolute joke, which I had the misfortune to see on cable.
Man, this was bad...
posted on 10 Jun 2009Frachises of all walks rarely remain good for a sixth episode. This is regardless of whether they are action, horror, science fiction, or even drama. On the other hand, they rarely get this bad, either. There is one moment in which Bubba Smith makes a computer give him the information by pounding his fist upon the VDT. Surprisingly enough, this is not the most idiotic moment in the film, although it does come close. Another question that constantly springs to mind is where, in the midst of a power grid sabotage, Michael Winslow gets the power to amplify his microphones. As the trivia entry states, this was the last time the characters of Hooks, Hightower, Proctor, and Fackler were seen in this series. They don't mention that it was also the last time Nick Lassard, or Mahoney Lite as he is better known, disgraced the series. It has long been said that he is little more than a pathetic attempt to compensate for the absence of Steve Guttenberg, but his performance is one of the smaller problems in this case. The real problem here is that we've seen this all at least five times before. As I've said in my comments about the third episode, Police Academy works best when it is actually set in an academy. In this case, the action begins in a district of the city where Captain Harris has been assigned far, far away from Commandant Lassard and his merry crew. One would think that a Captain in this situation would work like a dog in order to keep this situation intact. But as he and Proctor are working their old, stale routine, a threesome of robbers manage to steal an undisclosed amount/item right out from under them. This is enough to make one wonder how this man got to be a police lieutennant in the first place. In the end, the main problem is that this installment offers absolutely nothing new compared to previous installments of the series. Winslow makes his noises, Graf does his gun-nut routine, Bailey does his pathetic little momma's-boy thing, Hightower stands there looking big, and Matt McCoy tries to pretend he's Steve Guttenberg. You know a Police Academy film is plumbing a rotten depth when the biggest laughs come from the acts of the criminals, who are on-screen for a total of maybe twenty minutes. All told, I gave Police Academy 6: City Under Siege a one out of ten. I'm still debating with myself whether this, rather than episode seven, is the worst of the series. The acting, story, and humour of both films are utter tripe, but at least number seven tried to be slightly different from its predecessors.
the best of the worst*
posted on 20 May 2009i laughed at many of the stuff in this movie. it wasn't police academy 1 or 2, but it was a police academy and it was the best of the worst* of them. there were some points when i thought to myself "why did they do that?" and "how come they didn't do this?" but sometimes it was pretty funny. michael winslow was awesome when he played robocop and freaked out the guy he was fighting and when he made the squeaky shoe sound for that one guy who walked by. he never fails to make me laugh in any movie.acting: 6/10humor: 6.5/10overall: 6.25/10definately the best of the worst* of the police academies*worst: police academy 4-7
'City' of laughs!
posted on 02 Apr 2009POLICE ACADEMY 6: CITY UNDER SIEGE is one of the funniest in the POLICE ACADEMY series due to its hilarious characters, great scenes of slapstick, funny lines, and good music. This is the most exciting movie in the POLICE ACADEMY series since there is a lot more action than there is in the other ones which I like.
Quick Reviews!!
posted on 25 Feb 2009This film does not deserve to be in the bottom 100. Part 7, probably, but this is an improvement over part 5, and a genuine attempt to get back to the origins of the series, that which made it so popular and funny. A trio of criminals are causing havoc in the city, stealing diamonds and outwitting the cops at every turn. It seems they are working for a criminal mastermind who plans to lower property prices for his own eventual gains. The cops along with Lassard, Harris and Proctor try to uncover the crooks and work out who the mastermind is.This film has many more funny moments than 5 and 7, and the characters get a chance to fully exploit their individual traits, juxtaposed against the 3 criminals. Nick Lassard returns, but still he is no match for Mahoney. The three criminals are pretty good, and provide a few good moments. Once again it is Harris, Proctor and Lassard who shine, but the rest of the recruits seem more interested than they did in 5. Fackler returns to add some more humour, and overall the film is funny. Of course if you don't like this sort of thing, there is little to recommend it. It is less childish than 5 and 7, there are better performances, and the plot is more linear, rather than seeming like a series of sketches. That said, most of the humour is slapstick, sight gags which have been done better before. However, fans of the series will enjoy it, and remember it is meant to be stupid, not meant to be a cinematic or artistic masterpiece. People reviewing this usually use it to let out all their venom as it is an easy scapegoat. Well, just calm down and save your venom for part seven. Or even better, save it for a film which should have been good, one made with artistic merit in mind which fails. Like Fight Club...
a bit of an improvement over part 5
posted on 26 Jan 2009i thought part 6 was a bit better than part 5. it was a little more entertaining, and maybe funnier. but the last three movies in this series tries maybe too hard for laughs. part 5 barely had any laughs, and part 6 has a few laughs. but the biggest improvement over part 5 is in the entertainment department. i give police academy 6 **1/2out of ****
Another good PA movie
posted on 03 Dec 2008The 6th one is without any doubt one of the better ones in the series. It includes a lot of good jokes and marvellous acting work of the original cast Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsey, Michael Winslow, David Graf, Georges Gaynes, Bubba Smith, G.W. Baily and Proctor. Matt McCoy playing Lassards nephew was a bit overacted but acceptable. If you're a Police Academy fan you simply have to see this film.
Should Have Stopped at Three
posted on 15 Nov 2008Police Academy 1 through 3 showcased it's raunchy to to comedic perfection. While being hysterical the first three (especially the first) also showed a lot of social commentary, talking about sexism, and racism. But there was really nothing left after three. they still kept it going, why I don't know but they did. This time around there is a crimewave, and half of the cast is still gone, and for good reason. Michael Winslow and Bubba Smith just aren't enough, and the obnoxious Captain Harris can't save the movie either, and neither can new addition Kenneth Mars. Stick with the first three, they will crack you up, but this while a marginal improvement over 5 isn't enough to save it. I guess the series ran out of jokes.
Lame-brained comedy
posted on 09 Jul 2008Police Academy 6: City Under Siege (1989) D: Peter Bonerz. Bubba Smith, David Graf, Michael Winslow, Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsey, Lance Kinsey, Matt McCoy, Bruce Mahler, G.W. Bailey. Lame-brained comedy about inept criminals who start a crime wave that befuddles our `beloved' police cadets. Not laugh-out-loud funny at any level; however, Kenneth Mars is funny as the tremendously incompetent mayor. Bailey's misadventures (the highlights of the movie, which isn't saying much) dominate the first half but for some reason are shoved off the screen for much of the 2nd half. All in all, not as bad as everyone says but certainly not worth more than a single viewing (if that). RATING: 4 out of 10. Rated PG for strong language and slapstick violence.
childish, but better than five.
posted on 13 Apr 2008This is actually better than police academy 5. A lot better. There are more laughs, and the plot is not too predictable. Again Leslie Easterbrook flirts with her breasts, which i like by the way. ( I'm not a girl. I'm a boy.) If she said "Who wants to go one on one?" I would go.6/10
What can I say about PA6?
posted on 13 Feb 2008"Police Academy 6: City Under Siege" is the latest in what I like to call the "Police Academy mini-series".Nothing has really changed in this one...it's the same old police officers trying to make the city a better place and making fools of themselves at the same time courtesy of Capt. Harris (G.W. Bailey). It just gets stale after a while and I get anxious for the ending to come.Still, the same old gang the I have enjoyed watching since the first "Police Academy" movie are back and it's nice to seem them again.
This is an insult towards the movie-goers
posted on 29 Jan 2008No, this is not the worst movie I´ve seen. Police Academy 7 was even worse. How is it possible that these "movie makers" went this far? Yes, if you´re 5 years old you might find this amusing. If you´re over 10 you SHOULD find this painful to watch. I can´t say anything good about this film. It´s waste of money & time. I can´t say this is waste of talent because there seems to be no talent around. Bad bad bad. But if you want to see something even worse, see the part #7. But remember, you were warned... No stars for this.

posted on 02 Aug 2007Catching this on cable tonight, I couldn't help but be impressed by just how bad this movie is. Not a smile crept across my face, as the obvious plot, the grating characters, and the mediocre actions scenes all piled up one by one. There are no redeeming qualities to this movie. It wasn't even bad enough to laugh at, as the characters are all so thoroughly annoying you want to see them eat their own livers by the end of the spectacle. The only saving grace of the movie: they drive around Bigfoot for a while. No, not the actual creature, but the monster truck that was briefly popular for some reason. Still, even with horribly dated nostalgia being present for ten minutes or so, there's no excuse for anything other than pure contempt for this movie.Rating: 1/10
Police Academy 6: City Under Siege
posted on 27 Jun 2007The makers of this supposedly popular franchise just didn't know when to stop, so the first film is still best, and it is pretty much a laughter free film. Basically a string of robberies are being carried out on the same street by the same three crooks, and obviously it is the Police Academy bunch led by Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) to find them and the connection of these robberies. Lt. Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), Sgt. Eugene Tackleberry (David Graf), Sgt. Larvelle Jones (Michael Winslow), Capt. Debbie Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook), Sgt. Laverne Hooks (Marion Ramsey) and Sgt. Nick Lassard (Matt McCoy) all back again to save the day, with Captain Harris (G.W. Bailey) along with Lt. Proctor (Lance Kinsey), still trying to show them up, or save the day himself, but failing. I have to say the chase sequence, involving a monster truck, actually wasn't too bad, the heroes all get their small moments, oh, and The Mastermind turns out to be The Mayor (Kenneth Mars), and he was robbing all the buildings to make them more valuable to buy. Also Bruce Mahler as Sgt. Douglas Fackler, Gerrit Graham as Ace, George R. Robertson as Police Commissioner Hurst, Brian Seeman as Flash, Darwyn Swalve as Ox, Home Alone's Billie Bird as Mrs. Stanwyck, Arthur Batanides as Mr. Kirkland, Beans Morocco as Bank President and Daniel Ben Wilson as Tackleberry Jr. As with the other previous films, Winslow seems to be the only funny thing with his self-made sound effects, including a quick Donald Duck impression, beat boxing and of course the robot imitation, although Smith and Graf also get their moments, and Bailey gets more pranks played on him than the previous films. As for the rest of the film, pointless and pretty boring, and unfortunately, the last to feature all continuing actors (besides Steve Guttenburg) together, the next (and hopefully last) sequel, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the first film, only featured five of them. Poor!
Oh Lord! - what a waste of tape
posted on 03 Jun 2007The only thing interesting in this movie is the video box as it has great drawings of the characters. There is so many great scripts that have been written and never made. Even scripts that were bought and never made putting aside scripts that were made and rejected. The film is just so so bad. Not a film for anyone to care about. It disurves it place in the bottom 100 films of all the time. The return of the bumbling Factler is a sad way to try and get this film working but it never does.I would watch this film when I have gone through my collection of films and have nothing to do. It is one of my films because I bought it when i was young and knew nothing about film. Forget about it. Buy or rent 'Citizen Kane' instead. However, no matter how bad this film is, it doesnt match the badness and horridness of Star Wars.
The best of the lot!
posted on 29 Dec 2006At first I thought, "another one?..." though I was pleasantly surprised. Some of the stuff may a seem tad similar, though this one has a really good story. The Wilson Heights Gang have instigated a series of robberies, the gang consisting of a martial arts expert, a strongman and a really cute guy with guns (Gerrit Graham :)Classic try hard Captain Harris (G. W Bailey)... love him, hate him or love to hate him ... is still trying hard. Tackleberry is up to his usual militarism, gotta love him too ... :) and of course who could forget the famous sounds of Michael Winslow! And don't mess with Hooks! Sergeant Lassard, Matt Mcoy, (the other cute one :), joins us from Police Academy 5.Good effects and whoever thought guns could be used to make cute stuff? A fun romp, a good laugh, so get to your local video store NOW!! Move it! Move it! Move it!
"Bad jokes is where I draw the line."
posted on 05 Nov 2006City Under Siege is the sixth of the Police Academy movies, a series of satires on modern America almost Swiftian in their subtlety. To be honest, as a film anorak, I was tempted to give this one a miss, as I hate watching movies out of sequence. Over the years I've possibly seen all of the Academy franchise, but never in order. So coming to this one fresh I felt like I was missing out on all the finely tuned story arcs and character development. Like how did the guy who makes sound effects with his mouth all the time go to just making sound effects quite a lot? And what caused the dizzy, shouty one to change to a dizzy one who sometimes only talks loudly? As this was made in the tail end of the 80s the dodgy politics that plagued the early ones are thankfully absent, and there's a better atmosphere too. Okay, Steve Guttenberg no longer being in it automatically takes the smugness level down 50%, but years of critical slating have lent humility to the cast. There's a real air of "so bad it's good" playing here, rather than the first few where the actors seemed to genuinely believe they had decent material. But it's not all positive, and the absence of other cast members is a worry. Didn't there use to be someone funny in Police Academy? Maybe I imagined it. Still, the loss of Bobcat Goldthwait and Tim Kazurinksy is something to be noted, and we're left with a pretty asinine bunch. Possibly the worst is Bruce Mahler as Fackler, an accident-prone cop instigating wearily mistimed and predictable slapstick sequences. What's great about the Police Academy series is how it unites everyone - the humour is so low-brow that even really thick people don't find it funny. I did get a few ironic laughs at how poor some of it was - like Harris running when his feet are stuck through the bottom of a moving van. Generally, though, it's of the strictly lame variety. There are people that could make it work - think of Chaplin, Laurel, Lloyd or Allen superglued to a chair and, even though it's a cheap gag, you might laugh. But when it's G.W.Bailey directed by Peter Bonerz you're talking a chuckle vacuum. There's a scene where the blue-eyed boring one and the silly noises one enter a "Comedy Pub" to quieten it down after a blackout. In a scene of pure wish-fulfilment, Michael Winslow gets on the stage and brings the house down. Yeah, right... if only. His Hendrix impression is good, mind. He gets one of the big finales, too, slugging it out with a villain while he does his "badly dubbed Bruce Lee" schtick. How many times has he done that anyway? Surely even his own mother wasn't laughing at this stage. However, the semblance of some sort of plot and the presence of three genuine laughs - more than in all the other Police Academy movies stuck together - take this one up to a mighty 3/10.
P.U.!!!
posted on 12 Oct 2006In "Police Academy 6: City Under Siege", the gang's all here to save a crime-ridden city from the wrath of 3 white guys named the Wilson Heights Gang...I imagine this complicated premise was pitched to Warner Bros execs something to the effect of "Um, they like to rob stuff...and they're bad guys. Oh, and the city's under siege because of them." I know this is slapstick and it was never intentioned to be taken seriously, but even when writing a film like this you have to TRY, at least TRY to write something good!!Anyway, the cast is all here, again, and they're not unlike the line of lower-income, shady low-lifes I see waiting outside the Department of Labor office every morning to pick up their unemployment checks. I don't think these guys even bother auditioning for other parts anymore, they're all blacklisted for life. There's Lt. Harris, once funny and a believable antagonist, now a cartoonish straight man to his bumbling apprentice Proctor, the two of them like some ill-fated and painfully unfunny Abbot & Costello bit that goes on too long. Way, way, waaaaay too long. There's Hightower, for the sixth time, he's big and black. Really big and black. Ha-ha-ha. Hooks and Tackleberry are here, oh Lord, don't forget about Hooks and Tackleberry...she's mousy and timid but sometimes she yells loudly, and T-man, he's a walking arsenal who loves guns! Most interesting though is Nick McCoy (I can't remember the character name) who's simply a modern replacement for Steve Guttenberg and his Carey Mahoney. Both are bright-eyed and boyish, both the unofficial leader of the gang. Put all these guys together and you have...well, you have...you have a cast, I guess.Police Academy 6 should have been the end. The sad, painful end to a once respectable series (meaning the first P.A. only) that had gone on seemingly forever, like that old uncle who lives in Jersey who's 103 and can't walk or talk, just lays in bed and mumbles in pain with everyone waiting for him to pass on and finally be at peace. Instead, a seventh police academy was made. It never made it to the theaters and I have yet to see it, but I remember seeing its preview in the movies some years back...as soon as the title and Robert Folk's Academy March started, a universal groan filled the theater. I think the marketing execs were in that theater and got the idea. But don't worry, Academy fans, I'm sure there'll be an eighth and a ninth, and a tenth...it will outlive us all, this series. And true genius is never recognized in its own time.

* Out Of Five
posted on 15 Aug 2009This time the pretext is a rip off of Police Academy 2, with a group of thieves starting a crime wave, while facing police corruption in the city in this atrocious sequel which leaves the viewer begging for death. This sequel is without a doubt one of the lamest comedies ever, the humor is dated, the actors bored and no laugh is contained in this horse manure. One could call this a really bad action movie, with the humor it contains. This is seriously the pits, as bad as movies get and just think Mission To Moscow was even worse. Of course that's why this I voted it a 2 rather than a 1.City Under Siege, indeed!1/5 Matt Bronson
