Vegetarian ethics

I think this is a great movie and one that will become a cult classic, especially for humanitarians and vegetarians. Throughout the movie we see a powerful being whimsically hunt down and kill humans, strip and possibly skin them, hang them upside down, take from the carcass and eat what it wants and then display the spinal column and skull in a trophy case. We sit in awe of the creature's power over us, hoping that it is alone, gets board and leaves us alone. Fortunately we are able to kill the superior foe as sometimes happens, but it is the setting of the final scenes where the movie makes its real statement. These scenes take place in a meat packing plant where we see skinned frozen sides of beef hung up waiting for consumption by us. The true horror of this movie is that we know the terror of the alien is really a representation of us. Nothing the alien has done is as horrible as what we do to cows (and so many other animals). The alien's actions towards us are an obvious comparison to the practices of the industrialized slaughterhouse and the processing of cows into hamburgers. Each member of the audience knows in a deep way that mercy is not to be expected if the aliens actions are anything like ours. Instead we ourselves will soon be easily subjected and horribly processed according the aliens desires. I think that this movie can create some thought around the idea that the fear and terror we bring to our fellow creatures not only hurts them but is hurting us also. While most people are so disassociated from their role in the practices of horror that take place on the planet that they don't even notice the hanging carcasses of fellow creatures who we have mistreated (the cows), the pain we are creating is working its way out in this film, and in society.

This movie stunk so bad i almost gaged to death.

Danny Glover, Please hes like fifty already when they made this movie, and without the Governator, this was doomed to suck. Oh well, there are other sequels more worth watching, Like ALL OF EM. This movie did everything to suck up. There was no deed for a naked scene. There was no neeed to see that old black guy get chopped up. So pathetic. Plus Glover was the sadest Arnold ive ever seen.

Very undervalued sequel suffering because of the first films success.

Los Angeles is imploding with mayhem as gang wars fill the streets, an under pressure police force try to restore order, but both parties have another foe to worry about, a Predator is in town, and he's about to up the ante.Gone is Arnold Schwarzenegger, gone is John McTiernan, and gone is the jungle setting, so following in the foot steps of the ultimate beefcake movie that was Preadtor 1987 was an unenviable task it seems. Yet i personally feel that Predator 2 stands up to scrutiny as a fine entry into the sci-fi/action genre, locating it amongst the urban decay of L.A. works real well, and pitting the Predator against a tough grizzled {but hardly giganticus beefcakeus} cop {Danny Glover} gives us a smart brains against brawn story. Also cutely is that director Stephen Hopkins and writers Jim & John Thomas, have actually got the Predator cleaning up the streets of L.A., in fact another two hours of Predator hunt and kill tactics and crime in L.A. would have been completely eradicated!!. There is plenty of bloody snotty gore to appease fans of that persuasion, and it's nice to report that the characters on show do actually impact as part of the story. It has a fine cast that reads like a who's who of action films, Danny Glover {Lethal Weapon}, Bill Paxton {Aliens}, Robert Davi {Die Hard}, Gary Busey {Under Siege}, Rubén Blades {Once Upon a Time in Mexico} & Maria Conchita Alonso {The Running Man}, whilst Kevin Peter Hall dons the Preadtor suit and suitably kicks arse again. It's not genius, it's not even ground breaking, but Predator 2 is a fine and entertaining genre piece that sadly seems to forever be undervalued on internet sites.8/10 "who's next"?

"Predator 2" is ultimately a fairly satisfying action film from director Stephen Hopkins... "Director Stephen Hopkins", that should give you your first indication of how different this film is from its predecessor. Unlike McTiernan, the no-nonsense, straightforward action director who directed the first installment, Hopkins is famed for less straightforward films, such as "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers". The first few minutes of the film willserve to solidify the fact that this film is entirely different from its predecessor, with the exception of the title character. Aside from Kevin Peter Hall, who returns to play the Predator, the cast is entirely different from that of the original. This film is set in 1997 in L.A. where rival gangs have turned the streets into a war zone and where the Predator is loose and off killing/skinning people... But the story doesn't really matter. The good news about this film is that this L.A. feels more like Gotham city than the real Los Angeles, and the comic book atmosphere really does work here. All the characters are overblown and cartoonish and the cast is fun to watch, especially Glover and Paxton. However, the film's quality is diminished by a very uneven script, a pretty bad score, and some questionable directorial choices. But it's still an enjoyable action romp and the Predator itself is a bit more interesting here in terms of its movement and weaponry. "Predator 2" is one of the few sequels that truly separates itself from its predecessor. However, in going for the atmosphere it goes for, "Predator 2" earns comparison to those films that are similar to it, and in that sense is merely a pleasant, good film. Compared to the original it lacks the suspense or excitement of its predecessor. This is a good film, but maybe it should be forgotten as part of the Predator franchise, as it negates "Predator"'s fearsome nature by replacing it with cartoonish violence and broad characterizations. 6/10

Average follow up to the original

posted on 14 Jul 2009

Well, i don't own this DVD, but i have the cassete and have watched it on cable several times. To be honest, i don't think that this was even close to being as well done or original then the first Predator W/ Arnold. That said, even though it is a weak follow up, it does have its good points. This has been nothing more for me then a brainless action/violence flick that you would watch sometimes for killing time, and it does its job well in that role so i feel that 3 stars is acurate because it's not great but it still is good in some parts.

Now my first reaction to this film was mixed, i was having a hard time accepting the fact that Danny Glover was chosen for this role. Danny is a great actor, but he is not someone i would picture fighting the Predator (although he puts up a hell of a fight against it), i have always pictured him as the gruff, hardnosed Murtoch from the Leathal Weapon series. He plays LT Harrigan (who is basically a Murtoch w/ serious anger issues) in a crime infested Los Angles that is the next hunting ground for the Predator. Other actors here were Bill Paxton as some wise@$$ rookie cop who often gets lectured by LT Harrigan for not being a "team player", i'm glad when the Predator takes him out in the subway, he was the most insipid and useless character in the movie. Gary Busey plays as a govermant big wig secretly hunting the creator responsible for the number of bizzare killings in LA, this is a common role for Gary, so he fit in well for that part. At first you might hate him (which i did), but he becomes a cooler character when you learn more about him as the movie goes on, it almost makes you feel sorry for him when he gets severed in two from the Preds frisbee attack in the meat locker. Then there are the two secondary characters; Danny, who was Mike Harrigans (Danny Glover) best freind and partner who was killed by the Pred (which is basically the whole reason why Danny presues the thing) and the female cop (i forget her name, but she was also the female marine in Aliens), Both of these characters were severly underscpited. Danny is killed off so early that you had no time to develope any commection to him and could really care less that he is dead, and the female cop really does nothing but follow Harrigan around. Through the whole thing, you are basically watching Danny Glover go on a @$$ kicking spree, there is no real cast of characters that are memorable or that you care about when they die, like in Pred 1.

This whole thing is one big ultra-violence fest, the opening secene is a giant battle in the steets of LA between the drug lords and the police. Such emphasis is put on this war between the Colombians, Jamacians and the police that it almost over shadows the fact that there is some creator out there hunting people down. I thought they went way overboard with some of this gang member stuff, and the final battle between Harrigan and Pred was a little bit of a let down. The most redeeming part of the whole movie is when we get to see inside the Predator ship, you find out that the Preds have been around long before humans have as there is a t-rex skull in the trophy room as well as a xenomorph skull (those bugs from the Alien series). The end was a serious let down to me, there is no clear winner or loser here, just some stupid flintlock pistol from 1678 he gets or whatever and ending with Danny Glover standing in a smoking crator looking like an albino shouting curses. The ending will kill you, because it is such a let down yet, it also makes you want to see the sequil to this. We waited 14 years for a sequil to the Predator story and we got that piece of c r a p AvP.

This is alright if you are interested in the Predator movies, but it is inferior to the first. However, this is by far better then AvP, which gets one star. Don't expect it to be as good as it was with Arnold, no, this is like a cross between COPS,Leathal Weapon and the occasional guest apperance of a invisible alien with a IR viewing helment and shoulder mounted laser cannon w/ a triangle dotted targeting system.

An action sequel that is just as good as the first one.

Some people don't like this film and think it is no where near as good as the first one but this film is good for a sequel .If you are watching it for good acting and a good story then don't bother .If you are watching it for fun and action then this is the film for you .

One of the FEW sequels that do it better than "the original"

The Predators are (literally) back it town (L.A. to be exact). What happens when someone/something is rampaging through the underworld, killing baddies (and a few cops too if I remember correctly)? Some bright cop gets the great (read: stupid) idea to find out what's really going down... When he THINKS he knows what makes the Predator tick, the Predator shows the audience who's the boss in this movie. The story is a bit thin, and plays on the cult-status of Predator (1) , but the movie manages to portray the feeling of fear better than Predator (1).More high-tech weapons, more action, more stalking in "familiar" surroundings, more more more. This movie has it all... More suspence than action (YEY!!!).I gave this movie a 7...

"Predator 2" finally arrives on DVD with average results!

Sequel to the action-packed blockbuster, "Predator", replaces Arnold Schwarzenegger with Danny Glover and the jungles of Central America with the urban backdrop of Los Angeles.

Glover is Harrigan, a seasoned LAPD liutenant trapped in a war-infested heat wave as Columbian and Jamaican drug cartels attempt to wipe each other out. Little do the cops or the drug posses know, there is a new player in town: The Predator. The creature is even more deadly the second time around as he packs an even larger arsenal of weapons that he uses to take out everyone in sight. While the police believe that the gruesome murders are the work of the rival gangs, Gary Busey's government operative who is posing as a DEA agent is after something else. When Harrigan calls for a meeting with the Jamaican drug lord, King Willie, he soon begins to realize that he may be dealing with something other than rival dealers. Willie seems to believe that it is a supernatural force.

"Predator 2" is not the epic suspense thriller that the first film was but it does have fun with its story. A sequence in which the invisible-cloaked Predator takes out an entire subway train full of cops, gang members, and random civilians is one of the movie's most memorable moments but the film doesn't slow down from there. Glover is chasing his alien nemesis all through out the city before tracking him down to a slaughterhouse where the creature disposes of an elite unit of governemnt agents in record time. There isn't a lot of plot to be found in the concluding act of the film (or anywhere else for that matter) but if you're the kind who likes for the action to tell the story then you won't be dissapointed.

This DVD edition of "Predator 2" isn't particulary remarkable. You get the film's theatrical trailer and a nice little featurette from the promotional days of the film but not much else. I can't completetly complain because it offers a lot more than the bare-bones DVD of the first film. I still would have liked to see some deleted footage or maybe an audio commentary but seeing as this movie was only a marginal success in its theatrical run, I should have expected as much.

Man what a lousy flick. How they managed to mess up the sequel of Predator so bad, I will never know. Let's see, the dialog is crap, the story is nonsense, the only thing this movie has going for it is the music and we get to see the Predator with some new gadgets. And all the characters were annoying, even the Predator went overline with too much talking. Not even Danny "im too old for this s**t" Glover could save this sorry excuse for a movie. And get this, they use a perfectly good line from the first movie "your one ugly...". Please. Go home and get a better script people. Why they handed this task to some nobody who had only directed two films(one of them known for possibly being the worst Freddy Krueger movie) is a mystery. They destroyed something that could have been a successful enterprise.Don't kid yourself, if you have half a brain you'll avoid this mumbo-jumbo shot em up junk of a movie. For Predator extremist fans only. 3/10

So few times does is the sequel better than the original; so few times does the sequel go beyond everything that was the original; about "Predator 2" I have to say that this IS NOT one of those tim

"Predator 2" is by far the worst sequel ever made. At least the first had some dignity, and it realized that it was just an action movie and shouldn't be any more. "Predator 2" tries to throw a 'twist' at you with having the Predator appear in L.A. in the middle of a gang war. I'm sure the writer was thinking "Wow, this is a really intricate plot!" when he decided to do this; oh wait, monkeys in a Coma don't have thoughts that complex, I forgot. And how in the hell did the protagonist go from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Danny Glover. This decision is equal to making the next "Alien" movie take place in a nursing home and replacing Sigourney Weaver with an eighty year old man without bladder control. Honestly, after Glover's climactic fight with the Predator, the guy looks like he's going to drop dead right there. Not only all that, but Bill Paxton is in it? Who on Earth is still keeping this guy's career alive? His acting is just about as good as Will Ferrel on an SNL skit. The guy flaunts around in tight pants and bright yellow shirts throughout the entire movie. When I first saw him I thought he was a lost extra from "Staying Alive" who accidentally wandered onto the set. Oh yeah, Garey Busey's in it too.I've been in car accidents that were more entertaining than "Predator 2", 1.5/10.

At Least It's Better Than The First One

Decent effects and more action make this one better than the first...But as far as I'm concerned thats not saying much. Stephen Hopkins is a solid director though. See Under Suspicion which he directed about a year or so ago.

i watched the sequel now for the third time and i must say it's still doesn't bore me because it's a unique movie.First, you have Danny Glover a real acting pro.Second, there's a great atmosphere (example:An alien hunter in the asphalt jungle what do you want more).Third, you have the best special effects you have ever seen. This really is a sci-fi masterpiece

just as good as the original

Now, Predator 2 has taken a lot of flak from Pred fans, all of them saying that it's not half as good as the original, but I disagree. Predator 1 was an awesome movie, and Predator 2 is just as exciting. Danny Glover is good as an L.A. cop tracking down the predator. The creature looks even cooler than the one in the first one, and the special effects and action scenes are way more intense. Predator 2 is one of the best movies ever made.

I gave it five starts for the action, but that's just about the only good thing about the movie

posted on 02 Apr 2009

This movie is more action driven then the original, and while it could've been a great thing, everything else about this movie is obnoxious and annoying that it's hard to enjoy it.The first major problem is the characters- the Latino people look like the most horrible stereotypes of their own people, the "Lone Ranger" is the most fake, annoying, and over-the-top obnoxious character you just can't help but hate him completely, and David Glover looks like he barely knows how to hold a gun. Simply put, the cast is horrible. The dialog is not any better. In fact, it's one of the main contributors to the horrible characters. It really makes the movie seem childish, and some of the trying-to-be-cool scenes in the exposition make things even worse. It looks like the makers took some creative direction from the comics, as can be seen in the way some shots look, and while I'm sure it's a capable medium for storytelling I haven't actually seen any comics that had quality stories or didn't rely on trying to make every image look stylish. I think this is something they shouldn't have brought to the movie.I gave it five starts for the action, but that's just about the only good thing about the movie.

More fun than #1

posted on 31 Mar 2009

The original Predator was supposed to be moody and eerie and all, but its really just a vehicle for Arnold who isn't a good enough actor for something so serious.

Predator 2 throws all that out the window, in favor of just plain fun. Its suspenseful and absolutely hillarious at the same time. In this setting, bad acting is a virtue! As if the setting and situation weren't ridiculous enough, you have the always-awful Robert Davi and the usually bad Bill Paxton and Kent McCord. And that's not to mention Morton Downey, Jr! Wow! is all I can say.

There is something about the corny, cliched dialog, badly delivered--along with ultra, ultra violence--against a backdrop of big budget special effects that is just a winning combination. Danny Glover is fine (although his jacket doesn't fit) but I'm telling 'ya, if they had used Bruce Willis instead of Danny Glover people would be calling this a classic.

Watch this with anyone over 15 and you will laugh your sides off.

A Very Worthy Sequel

posted on 25 Mar 2009

In 1987, one of history's greatest movie monsters hit the screen: an extraterrestrial known as The Predator. The vicious alien warrior dropped in for some slaughter among the South American jungles, ultimately facing off with Arnold "Terminator" Schwarzenegger in what now has become a classic. But in 1990, The Predator hit the screen again in search of more slaughter, and found his game in the rough-n-wild habitat of Los Angeles, California. Too many times, sequels to great films have been disappointing. But bloody hell, Predator 2 could not have been better!

Danny Glover plays the driven cop, Mike Harrigan, in the middle of a town seemingly run by criminals. To make his job even harder, a new killer has come to play in the grim city, and this thing isn't human. It kills as it pleases, collecting the skulls of it's victims. It's equipped with dozens of out-of-this-world gadgets, including a cloaking device, laser blasters, a wicked spear, and more. It's a hunter of the worst kind, and it seems absolutely unstoppable. To make matters worse, there is a group of reseachers that don't want to defeat the creature, but rather capture it and learn from it. They try, of course, but you can predict the outcome. Whether he likes it or not, Harrigan seems to be the only one capable of stopping the monster. The enemy realizes this, and all hell breaks loose. It becomes a battle between the vigilante cop and the terrifying creature, right down to the very end where they face-off in the predator's spaceship!

Don't worry about cheesiness here. Just as the first one, Predator 2 succeeds in a terrifying roller coaster ride of realistic monster mayhem, packed full of action. Even a concept such as a fight scene in a spaceship (which, upon reading it, would sound silly) keeps the tense mood, refusing to let your mind drift from the horrific world of this man and his other-worldy enemy. The predator itself is just as mesmerizing. Sticking to basically the same full-body-suit as the first film, you could swear the alien is a living breathing thing right in front of your face. It remains one of the most terrifying and interesting creatures ever created. A great film crew (and cast) assist the predator in making this sequel well worth the purchase.

Same Idea, same killer, new story and setting

posted on 18 Mar 2009

This movie is as good as the original in my opinion. The basic idea is the same, the killer is as well, its just a new story line and a new setting pretty much. While Predator took place in the forests, Predator 2 takes place in L.A. While the main characters of Predator were soldiers, the main characters here vary, mainly the protagonists are the cops (LAPD). The main character is Lt Mike Harrigan, excellently played by the talented Danny Glover. Along with his friends on the force, Danny Archuleta (Ruben Blades), Leona Cantrell (Maria Conchita Alonso), and new guy Jerry Lambert (Bill Paxton, who also happens to appear in Aliens). There's also the FBI in this headed by Peter Keyes (Gary Busey; who also played Danny Glover's enemy in Lethal Weapon) and Garber (Adam Baldwin). The story here is like the original except Predator seems to be hunting Mike throughout the film. Everywhere Mike goes, the predator seems to follow and gets closer and closer to Mike. The acting and storyline were great. And the FX here were excellent. Everything was as it should have been. 9/10, same as the first movie.

I tell you what I believe....

Glover, awesome! Paxton, random! Predator, HARDCORE! This sequel keeps you on the edge of your seat and is everything you'd expect from a "Sorry, we can't get Arnie" sequel. We'll let him off though, as it was because of Terminator 2 - but just think, Arnie WOULD have done this film if it WASN'T for T2, and that would've been something AMAZING! But for what it is Predator 2 is still a very good, epic Predator movie. And, sadly for the last time in a Predator film history, it has a STAR. Danny Glover wouldn't be my obvious choice for a Predator detective but he really, REALLY pulls it off. He get's so freaked out. I only enjoyed Saw because of his excellent performance in Predator 2. My final thought is that I'm gutted, as always, I never saw this in the cinema. The music again is brilliant and in true sequel style they haven't changed the themes, the Predator theme music is my favourite film score of all time, Predator 2 is nothing short of the first - well executed and most importantly, just like it was the first time round :) Here's to Predator 2! WANT SOME CANDY!??

This fine film has sat on the shelf too long - at last, the DVD. C'mon, you low reviewers, this movie has everything you want in an action movie - and it actually works as a movie. Aliens who hunt for sport, secret government organizations set up to study them clandestinely, Jamaican druglords, annoying reporters and heroic cops - including Danny Glover, who is terrific in this movie. All of Glover's co-stars create believable, interesting characters as well. This movie works well on a number of levels. It's an ACTION MOVIE, for cripe's sakes! And, it's cheap, so buy it.
