Not keen on Julia but this is a great movie
posted on 15 Aug 2009I have the impression that Pretty Woman is some kind of part of general knowledge now... the story is quite stupid, but the whole film is so nice to watch. I have found watching it every second year now, and it is still great! Man, take the DVD and grab your girlfriend, and you'll have a marvellous night! :-)
Modern Day Pigmaelion
posted on 04 Aug 2009Pretty Woman is a great movie. When Julia Roberts acted in this 1990 classic, she was sexy, vibrant and cute. In her latest movies she seems to have lost her charm, and appears awkward and frumpy.
It is a romantic comedy about a lovable prostitute Vivienne (Julia Roberts) hired by a spoiled, jaded billionaire, Edward (Richard Gere) for a highly unusual assignment.
Needless to say, this encounter irreparably changes both of their lives forever. Though a story that is funny, touching and engaging, Vivienne's dreams come true, and she able to start a new life, and having found love
The change is Vivienne from a streetwalker to a lady mirrors a Pygmalion/My Fair Lady type of theme.
Edward too has finally learned to love!
As the voice at the end reminds us, sometimes your dreams come true and sometimes they don't but you are always free to dream!
I just don't like this!
posted on 03 Aug 2009I saw this film with my ex best friend and best man Dave. I think he liked this film for Julia, and his eyes jumped right out of his head. Julia did herself up for the male auidence; I wanted to go see Krate dude out for revenge 3 or some other mind numbing action film and old Dave or I guess back then new Dave wanted to see Julia. I wish he ment her instead of well lets not go there; the acting is fine. Richard and Roberts I never seen them act bad even with a bad story. The story need something more to it like the Pizza movie Roberts was in before. Acted well, just something missing in the story's execution. The theme where people have hope, and can change is great, but the execution for the conclusion need's some juice. 5 out of 10. Richard and Roberts should do more movie together there is a chemistry between them. One can not help but see this in this film. Something tells me these actors are all right people. I bet Julia, Richards and myself would argue on many issues, but their on screen warmth seem to be real. I give credit for Julia's donation of money for 9/11 her tears where real. Many other actor use event for their own purpose and never would give such a large amount of money. Good for you Julie even if I don't agree with some of her views.PS My wifes view is this film is opposite of mine she wrights a few of my review to give balance and found this story touching, warm and thinks Gear is a great actor. My uncle calls him a b actor that fits a role. Funny how opinions vary.
A light-hearted classic
posted on 26 Jul 2009One of my favorite romantic comedies of all-time (probably the movie I've seen the most no. of times...shhhh! Don't tell...) Roberts and Gere have great on-screen chemistry. It's a true modern Cinderella story. Definetly my fav Garry Marshall film. BOTTOM LINE: A total feel good flick, great for a night in with the girls. A must-see for the classic piano scene (send the kids to bed). Grade: B+
Horrible
posted on 25 Jul 2009Okay ladies, repeat after me: THE WOMAN IS A PROSTITUTE...I remember when this movie came out. I was in the fifth grade and not allowed to see it because it was about a PROSTITUTE. So, I don't know, I think about two years ago I saw a copy of it in my parents video cabinet and popped it in to the VCR - and was so disgusted that I turned it off about a third of the way through (and trust me, I wanted to turn it off earlier). It embarrasses me to know that this is what is known as a "chick flick"... I mean, I like romance when it's not utter tripe and it's not about PROSTITUTES... I just had a hard time caring for any of these characters. If Gere had maybe paid her to spend time with his and then not have his way with her whenever he felt like, maybe I could have enjoyed and respected this film. Walt Disney must have turned in his cryogenic chamber when this film came into his company's hands. This movie was worse than Dirty Dancing!... and WHY was it worse, ladies???Because THE WOMAN IS A PROSTITUTE!!!What a waste.
Pretty awful
posted on 25 Jul 2009hmmm....let's get a cardboard cut-out and make him walk around the screen acting unpleasant towards everyone. Let's then let him meet a floozie, who really has a heart of gold and can turn him around. Let's mash it together like you would a bananna-peanut butter sandwich and hope that something beautiful is the result. Instead you get an ucky-mucky, mish-mash of a movie that is painful to watch.
Nice script with very good direction
posted on 19 Jul 2009I have not watched too much Hollywood movies and probably this was the first of Richard Gere for me, but his acting has truly impressed me. He lived role of a sound, calm headed businessman who also have some vulnerable traits perfectly. The script was tightly written and kudos to director to draw it in the same way on the screen. Every character was perfectly defined and artists did full justice to their role. Julia appeared as over reacting some times but over all that was a great show by the director. Richard Gere was awesome in reflecting his traits. The insane movement of Julia on roads and shops really put humor touch in the movie to balance it. Overall it was a light movie to watch and to turn your mood on.
Hey Let's Move To LA!
posted on 04 Jul 2009No one will ever be able to replace Julia Roberts. Reading the trivia here, and if it's to be believed, mulling on who was considered for her role... There is no way any of the others would have worked as well as she does. She even makes some scenes in Runaway Bride work just on her personality alone.Back home, according to recent surveys, she's the #1 woman men dream of sleeping with. She doesn't impress me this way, but looking back on this movie one sees class and a fantastic actress.Everyone is good here - Gere too actually, and Hector is priceless. It's very well made and extremely well acted. The only drawback - two points on the ten star scale - is that this movie resulted in such an influx of US midwest girls all intent on coming to LA and hooking on the streets and meeting their own Richard Gere. It's reminiscent of how people were reputed to accost Larry Hagman on the street and rip him apart for being such a bastard, unable to distinguish between Larry the actor and JR Ewing the scum bag.And that's something a lot of people will never understand. And in the case of this movie, with all the 'chicken hawks' working the area, it was a real tragedy. So one wishes the movie could have had a slightly different import.Other than that, watch it and study how a great actress operates and above all study a great - a phenomenal - actress. And kudos to Pelle Gessle for a great end song.
Please Don't Make Me Watch This Movie Again
posted on 20 Jun 2009Let me start by saying I don't demand utter reality in my movies. I'm happy to suspend my disbelief in the name of entertainment. The problem is that I think I pulled something having to suspend so MUCH disbelief for so long. If you're a sucker for any kind of romantic movie you will enjoy this movie. Everyone does their best. My issue is that there are so many superior movies of the "happily ever after" genre that you could go your whole life without seeing "Pretty Woman." Try something more creative like "The Night We Never Met" or even "You've Got Mail" where character development and plot are given much more work.
Best Romantic Comedy of All Time
posted on 20 Jun 2009This 15th Anniversary edition has some deleted scenes inserted into the movie that has had some "purists" howling, but for me, I think it adds a new dimension to the relationship between Edward and Vivian. Aside from that the commentary from Garry Marshall was fun (of course, hearing from Julia Roberts and Richard Gere would have been great, but whatever). The wrap party is a joke; they shouldn't have bothered inserting that. The "Pretty Woman Tour" which takes you to the actual places where the movie was filmed was also informative. But all that aside, it's about the movie and it is a movie that still seems fresh and original all these years later. It's well worth owning because this a is a movie that will surely get more than one viewing.
Great Girly Movie
posted on 13 Jun 2009This film is a must for any girly slumber party, or a great weepy for when you've just been dumped. The actual plot is very predictable, but that doesn't stop you loving it. Julia and Richard really are great in this kinda silly yet funny and strangely romantic film. Guarantee you'll laugh and you'll cry when you see this.
special movie--special features
posted on 11 Jun 2009Besides being one of my favorite movies ever, the real treat here is Garry Marshall's running comments. I know, I know. You've listened to director's comments before and been bored to tears. Not this time. I don't know whether it was what he said, or just his convivial tone, but I watched the movie twice in one night, the second time to hear his remarks.
Huh?
posted on 27 May 2009I would like to see a psychological analysis as to why PRETTY WOMAN had such an impact. Did it tap into some masked desires, women to be prostitutes, men to get away with dating them? Yikes. Julia Roberts plays it as if being a hooker was a career choice she discussed with her high school guidance counselor ("Well, I also like accounting, but that requires college and I wanted to make money right away!"). PRETTY WOMAN? Prostitutes end up pretty infected, pretty beaten, and pretty murdered, not married to Richard Gere.
Pretty far- fetched.
posted on 17 May 2009From my point of view, being a prostitute seems like the worst job in the entire world. I really wouldn't know but I do know that every single day prostitutes are raped, beaten, robbed and killed. Sometimes they can be very young children. It makes me sick that a movie is out there that makes prostitution look like a fairy tale. What was this guy thinking anyway? He must have not been thinking of the many diseases out there or that she could have had a gun. A movie like this will almost never ever happen in reality. Little girls are out there who watch this trash and think that prostitution is a glamorous life when it's far from it. I saw a special on HBO one time that depicted what prostitution is really like. I suggest that late one night to find it and compare.
Pretty Woman is a keeper! - A Julia Roberts HIT!!!!
posted on 27 Apr 2009Pretty Woman is Julia Roberts's (some of you may know her as the actress who demands $20 million a movie) 2nd movie and one of her best! Roberts is Vivian Ward, an L.A. hooker who doesn't fancy the job, until she gets asked for directions by a rich guy (Richard Gere) in a silver Lotus. Edward Lewis (Gere) is asking for directions to Beverly Hills, where he will stay on business for the week. Of course, Vivian won't give him directions for FREE! She charges him some money, and she drives him to the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Soon Gere asks her to stay with him for the week for $3,000, and be at his "beckin-call". Vivian falls in love quickly, and soon finds herself parading around greater Los Angeles -shopping on Rodeo Drive, going to fancy events, etc. with Edward. The story of this charming movie is NOT just about a Hollywood Blvd. hooker, but it's about 2 very different people teaching eachother some things about life that they didn't know before. An funny, carefree film! FIVE STARS!
If you love Pretty Woman, buy the DVD!
posted on 15 Apr 2009I've seen Pretty Woman twice in its theatrical release and maybe seven times on video, but when I got hold of the DVD and watched it with my family, it opened a whole new dimension of my liking to the film. The cause: Garry Marshall's commentary.
The director's views about his treatment of the film, behind-the-scene tidbits, and other pre-take preparations deserve a movie of its own. His natural wit and fluidity will make watchers want to look at the scene just described and try to bridge the original perception of the film with its new breadth. He should star in one of his films.
Richard and Julia - you are the best couple I ever seen in movies
posted on 08 Apr 2009A very simple but very touching story. In reality, might be impossible but who cares. We are not hoping to see a rich businessman really married a hooker and they live happily forever. Just have to look at it as a movie show. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts are both compatible for each other. Can say that because of Richard and Julia, I like the movie. Or the other way round, because of the movie then I like Richard and Julia. I had watched Pretty Woman over the television many times. But just couldn't feel bored at all after watching every repeated telecast. Edwards, who is rich and handsome should have no lack of woman but yet overcome his height tension to rescue Vivian from her castle, it must have been love. Regardless whether you are a hooker or not, it is the dream of every woman to marry someone who adore her. I think as long as you are a woman, you will share the same views.
If you want to get in good with a girl i recommend this movie.
posted on 30 Mar 2009I'm a hetrosexual dude and i like this movie. Because it's awesome and romantic without being saturated with estrogen. This movie taught me two things. The first is cynical, Chicks like money. The second nobody puts babby in a corner.

FOOLISH !
posted on 19 Aug 2009Is there a story more foolish than that? If I want a fairy tale, stories for children are the best and they are surely more realistic than this one which can only be defined as ''a piece of garbage''. Even the prostitutes themselves would find it insulting, as it does not reveal the truths about their lives. Sure there have got to be movies about prostitution - which is the part of the real life - and certainly the ending would not be happy at all!
