Please stick to comedy Mr Sandler

posted on 20 Aug 2009

Adam Sandler is just mediocre in this movie and I can't believe other reviews were he is praised for his acting. When he is "emotional" or "angry", *add any emotion here*, he gets this high pitched voice and always sounds like he's on the verge on breaking out in laughter, like something out of a poor Saturday Night Live skit. I just ended up laughing when I should be crying. And the plot is just waaaay off;- Really, who the hell is interested in hanging out with this Charlie-loony that Sandler portraits? I mean, the guy burst into fits of rage for no particular reason and tries to strangle you, throws hot coffee in your face etc, etc. I think he's _supposed_ to come off as "charming" in his messed up state, but hey, which sane person should give him more than 2 min? - The Donna Remar woman. What's up with her...? Why is she obsessed with Alan in the first place? OK, she got dumped by her man, but why does she want to give Alan a BJ? And the scene when Donna and Alan is having the big talk in the office is just pure unintended comedy. - And what does Donna (a fox) see in Charlie? He looks like a Bob Dylan on crack and serial killer in the making. I doesn't just compute that she should be interested in him. I had high hopes for this movie since reading some reviews on IMDb but I ended up very disappointing. Please stick to comedy Mr Sandler since I guess this movie wasn't supposed to be one...(?).

there's a saying "Adam Sandler is always in GOOD movies!'.... i think that saying is TRUE!

Adam Sandler's dramatic turnAdam sandler is without a doubt a good actor. He has been appearing in series of enjoyable movies from a very long time. His recent movie CLICK even though it did not fair well by the Critics, it was still a good and enjoyable movie with a MORAL.Well with reign Over ME, there's one thing I can say is that I can watch almost any Adam Sandler movie. This movie isn't as enjoyable as his previous movies. This movie is hardly a comedy. It's a Drama throughout with a Hint of comedy once in a while. Well Adam Sandler is really fantastic in his Serious Portrayal. Even in Click he showed his comedic as well as emotional side of his Acting. In this one he does his role staying realistic. His portrayal saves this movie.I won't say this is a fantastic movie. Which it isn't. But still it is a good film.Don Cheadle is also good in his portrayal but I don't think these kinds of roles is going to lead him forward as a Great Actor. But still he is in a Reasonable movie, RIGHT?The Psychiatrist isn't very convincing, her voice is completely so SWEET. And she is a very pretty face. But well she isn't given much to do so…All in all this is a movie that I likes, maybe not loved BUT still liked. Adam Sandler was Fantastic. The story is nothing so new but still watchable. I wont say go watch it, but well if u r a fan of Sandler and if you are into drama's and if you are not expecting much than DO WATCH THIS FILM. 7/10

Mediocre at best

Another vehicle to show us Adam Sandler can act seriously. Great. It was trite, predictable, formulaic, the editing was weird at times and it just wasn't that good. Don Cheadle STOLE the movie, and saved it as well, if it wasn't for him, I would've hit stop very early in the movie. Sandler looked like a really bad Bob Dylan throughout the movie, and shone OCCASIONALLY. The script was bad, I can not believe this thing has an 8.0 on IMDb, that's just sad. I am an Adam Sandler fan, I love the guy, but this movie just wasn't what it could've been. On top of thissomeone pulls Donald Sutherland out of their ass for a judge cameo, what's up with that? And the ending, with psycho blowjob girl coming in to nest, and then Cheadle riding off on a gas powered scooter to a half assed rendition (sung by eddie vedder) of The Who classic. Jeez. You could have at least let the original play, oh, but I forgot, this movie was not original.

One of Sandler's best

Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle showcase great chemistry in this tale about human loss. Jada Pinkett Smith and Liv Tyler perform adequately in supporting roles, but neither is anything to write home about. The basic story of the movie is that Sandler has lost touch with reality following the death of his wife and three daughters. Cheadle and Sandler went to dental school together, but the two had not spoken to each other in several years. Cheadle has issues of his own (introduce Tyler as the serious, yet compassionate psychiatrist) and the chance reunion with Sandler provides Cheadle's character with a vent for his own frustrations. Sandler does a magnificent job playing the grieving husband. He handles the shifts between emotions very well. The are two issues with this movie that keep it from being great. The first is the length and the second is the slightly unbelievable relationship that Sandler has with his parent's in-law.

Excellent performances save a mediocre storyline

Yet another 911 issue but this time with Adam Sandler? Interesting but I'll wait till it comes out on DVD. My goodness did he give a great performance. We all know how good Don Cheadle is. He is so natural and so polished of an actor but when it comes down to Sandler, we only really see the waterboy. There is a scene in the movie that almost frightened me because Sandler goes crazy by throwing pictures, kicking the walls, breaking lamps, etc. The rage in him in the scene is tough to watch as he makes himself look stupid in the middle of a hallway. Shortly after the scene he is back to normal again (well, kind of).Pretty much the story revolved around the coping of Charlie (Sandler). He was a roommate of Alan (Cheadle). Alan has a great family but has issues with space with his wife. Charlie has nothing because we learn his family dies in a plane crash on 911. Alan believes he needs to get Charlie help by sending him to a friend/shrink Angela (Tyler). The story wasn't that original and the pacing of the movie was slow. Although Cheadle and Sandler were excellent together. They saved this movie.

Disappointed

I think Don Cheadle is a great actor but this movie is not that great. Don Cheadle is married to Jada Pinkett Smith who is very uptight and controls their marriage. Adam Sandler lost his family in 911 and was college roommates with Don Cheadle. The main problem with this movie is starts off very well but it has nothing to go on towards the middle it drags on. It gets very intense towards the end but this movie never lifts off. The acting is pretty good but Adam Sandler could have done better. Overall not a great movie, good to see once but nothing more.

Great Drama/Comedy Mix

The topic of this movie would be a morose venture if not for the humor brought to it Adam Sandler. Albeit another actor might have been "better", his performance was fun to watch and had me rooting for him. I felt a sense of dread when he was confronting the cops, hoping the movie wouldn't end with him getting blown away. Fortunately, it ended up an up note. Don Cheadle, who, as the straight man, is, in many ways, the lead, plays a man suffering a self inflicted crisis finding catharsis with Charlie, the blameless sufferer. This element of the story, the balance between Cheadle's mid-life crisis (a timeless theme) and Sandler's moral destruction by 9/11, gives it its dramatic weight. The comedy is there to make the story enjoyable and let us know that life goes on.

Very moving and thought provoking cinema

Saw this masterpiece two weeks ago and i have to say brilliant. The subject matter concerning the effects of 911 may not seem like an inviting concept for a film as theme for entertainment, but trust me when i say you will be hooked from the start. The two leads were excellent and the chemistry was right on the mark. I loved the whole Quadrophenia soundtrack concept interwoven within the main plot to be an excellent tool. I will definitely be adding this to my DVD collection in the near future, a thought provoking and generally moving piece of work that touched this film fan big time which is a rare thing these days.

One word: WOW!

A friend gave me this DVD, and I have to say that I was VERY pleasantly surprised. I won't say too much about the movie itself, but Adam Sandler, Don Cheadle and all the supporting actors and actresses did a magnificent job with this film and it's story of loss (of loved ones and of self) and grief. Each of them gives rock-solid, believable performances. It truly lives up to the dark comedy/drama label, and I couldn't believe the number of times that I found myself laughing out loud with tears in my eyes. If the scene with Adam and his in-laws right near the end doesn't hit you the same way, you have my sympathies. Watch his face and listen to the tone in his voice...he pulls this scene off admirably. There are other scenes like this, of course, but this has to be the most touching minute and a half I have ever watched. He has graduated to the big leagues without a doubt.I regret to say that I didn't see this film at the theater because it had the whole 9/11 thing with it, but that was a huge mistake. 9/11 was only background and had very little to do with the overall story, as the writer/director, Mike Binder, chose instead to focus on the characters and their stories after.

Second comment about this film.

posted on 21 Jul 2009

I wrote my first comment just a few hours after seeing the Riegn Over Me in the theatre, now that i have had a few months to let it simmer in my brain, and with the DVD release date just around the corner I decided to update my comment a little.I still feel like this movie stands with the great dramatic work of all time, and certainly is arguably the best movie concerning 9/11. But i've had time to stew and think about exactly why i enjoyed this movie so much. The Acting: Adam Sandler has grown into a truly powerful actor. When you stack this against his back catalogue of movies it is far more comparable to "Punch Drunk Love" (personally a bit to weird for me to really enjoy it) which is important because it was really the first movie to really break his mould that he had made for himself; and "Spanglish" which again was pretty far from his safe zone of crazy tom-foolery (yes i just said tom-foolery.) Without giving away to much of the plot I will just say that his performance is delicious red cherry on top of an already strong film. One of my theatre directors used to tell us that theatre is all about taking risks, and you can't take a much bigger risk as an actor than Adam Sandler did for this film. He pulls off such a deep, rich, and complex performance and makes it look like he was born in that skin, that is to say even though you know that it is Adam Sandler on the screen you don't recognize him as anything but the character (which is incredibly hard for A-list actors to do.) I hesitantly say, and have since i saw the film, that he gives the best dramatic performance by any actor in the last 5 years, and without a doubt stands as one of the best of all time.Don Cheadle knows how grab a movie by the balls and make it amazing, he proved that in "Hotel Rawanda". But in this movie it wasn't necessary for him to do so, and he showed that he is just as good at taking a backseat, doing his part, and letting someone else's stunning performance shine through. He does have some nice character conflict and the problem's faced by his character are not insignificant, but he gives them exactly the perfect amount of weight to let them move the film along, and not slow it down. Again you catch yourself forgetting that this is Don Cheadle and thinking that it is someone who could quite easily be your neighbor.Jada Pinkett-Smith has over the past few years been delivering some wonderful supporting performances, such as in "Collateral" and her limited but ever so important contribution to "The Matrix" Trilogy (I suspect that she is to busy raising her children to accept any bigger roles.) and in this film she gives the same strong dependable performance that you would expect. And all the other Actors give equally well rounded performances that only benefit and never diminish the film. The Direction: Mike Binder, the writer/director of this movie did a great job, a breakout job in a sense. I haven't seen much of his previous work but i do know that this is an exceptional job, by anyone's standards (and if not for the entire package, definitely for the writing.) I don't know much of him as a director but it seems like he must have just let the actors go and discover their own characters, in any case it worked. I also noticed that the shots and the cinematography where subdued and traditional, just enough to show the story, no more, no less. In all his most important contribution, after writing and finding backers, was stepping back and not getting in the way p.s. a little on screen cameo never hurt no one.The Writing: The general plot points tended to be a little predictable (cliche isn't the right word) There isn't much in the way of suspense or surprise, but i don't think that it was necessary to this film. The true power of the screenplay comes from the character development, and the poignancy of the relational connections and the moments there-in. It is the actors job to bring it to life, but without a solid base the actors tend to spin their tires. So even though it may be a bit straight forward, would you want it to be anything but? if it ain't broke don't fix it and this writing was strong enough as it was.So in conclusion, this a great film. when it comes out in late July i advise you to watch it. I know i'll be buying it right away.May all you journeys be fruitful and your homecomings sweet. thank you.

this movie is obviously a take-off/update of Fisher King

posted on 19 Jul 2009

Ijust saw this movie and although I liked it well enough (I really like Adam Sandler a lot in everything he does, silly or serious) I couldn't help but see the similarities between it and The Fisher King of some yrs ago with Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. It has been updated and the 9/11 tie-in was good for the updated version, but if you thought this was good, definitely see Fisher King and compare! The latter had Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Rhuel, Amanda Plummer. Sound familiar?? Check it out! This version just wasn't as positively gut-wrenching as Fisher King was. I felt for the character, and thought the actors did a good job, but I wasn't destroyed like I was with what I think was the original. I really like Adam Sandler; they say the eyes are the window to the soul, and I find that is true with him; he has the kindest eyes. I think he must be very sweet in real life. Don Cheadle I always like too. He's good in everything he does; Loved Crash!

A very surprising film, with emotion and comedy cleverly intertwined

I had not seen anything about the film before I watched it and was truly surprised by how good it was.Sandler may not been known for his acting ability but if you do not see him in a new light after this film you probably have a vendetta against him.Cheadle and Pinkett-Smith also have a very well played relationship in the film. It not only addresses personal loss on a huge scale but also of marital relations and how you can unseemingly change over time.I am not normally one for an emotional film and usually my brain switches off and get bored very easily. However this film had me from the off until the credits and that I can assure you is quite rare.As for some of the comments that I read on the threads about Sandlers acting: I feel there are some people that believe Sandler cannot partake in a film anything more than the likes on Little Nicky or Waterboy. Well I have a suggestion for you...he just did, and did it very well.

Disappointing manipulative tripe

Mike Binder's "Reign Over Me" takes its name from "Love Reign O'er Me", that 1973 rocker from the Who, which had to do with a man going through a great personal crisis who prays for the rain to wash all of the pain away. It's an appropriate title for a film about a man who lost his family, and in essence himself, on the morning of September 11th. Unfortunately the operatic build and power of that song seems to have translated to this film in theory and premise only.Adam Sandler takes a second turn away from his tired comedic shtick (his first presumably being "Punch Drunk Love") to portray the lead. Even though dramatic turns for comedic actors have served many films very well in the past, this is simply unforgivable casting. Sandler is completely two-dimensional, playing an emotionally stunted man that seems fresh when he's quiet and brooding, but then seems all too familiar when he delivers that childish shrill he calls acting. There's dishonesty to the character with him in the role, because it's hard to believe that a previous time existed for his character that did not involve video games and staying out all night.Playing opposite Sandler is the usually dependable Don Cheadle, as Sandler's former college roommate who has several chance encounters with him. The circumstances might be a touch too coincidental, but the result does draw both of the men out of their prospective shells. It's a shame that Cheadle didn't get to sink his teeth into the lead role, because it might have made for a more fascinating and more honestly moving film. Instead he has a subservient, secondary role that seems unclear and inconsistent as the inconsequential subplots serving as character development roll on by."Reign Over Me" might have been considered daring in 2007 for it's exploration of 9/11, however, it actually does a disservice to those looking for a film about healing, mourning, and moving forward, because none of the characters seem real enough to have really lived through the event. Like the song that inspired its title, the film offers up big drama, but it sadly squanders it with very little emotional resonance.

Greetings again from the darkness. How rare it is for a film to examine the lost soul of men in pain. Adam Sandler stars as Charlie, a man who lost his family in the 9/11 tragedy, and has since lost his career, his reason to live and arguably, his sanity. Don Cheadle co-stars as Sandler's former Dental School roommate who appears to have the perfect life (that Sandler apparently had prior to 9/11).Of course the parallels in these men's lives are obvious, but it is actually refreshing to see men's feelings on display in a movie ... feelings other than lust and revenge, that is. Watching how they actually help each other by just being there is painful and heartfelt. Writer/Director Mike Binder ("The Upside of Anger", and Sandler's accountant in this film) really brings a different look and feel to the film. Some of the scenes don't work as well as others, but overall it is well written and solidly directed.Sandler and Cheadle are both excellent. Sandler's character reminds a bit of his fine performance in "Punch Drunk Love", but here he brings much more depth. Cheadle is always fine and does a nice job of expressing the burden he carries ... just by watching him work a jigsaw puzzle.Support work is excellent by Jada Pinkett Smith (as Cheadle's wife), Liv Tyler (as a very patient psychiatrist), Saffron Burrows (in an oddly appealing role), Donald Sutherland as an irritated judge and Melinda Dillon and Robert Klein as Sandler's in-laws.The film really touches on how the tragic events of that day affected one man so deeply that he is basically ruined. In addition to the interesting story and some great shots of NYC, you have to love any film that features vocals from Chrissy Hynde, Bruce Springsteen and Roger Daltrey ... as well as Eddie Vedder impersonating Daltrey. Not exactly a chipper upbeat film, but it is a quality film with an unusual story.

Arguably one of the best films made this year

I have adored Adam Sandler for two thirds of my life, and I always recognised that he had a talent that had not been shown yet because he was cloaked by slapstick comedies or feel good date movies. Reign Over Me is a fantastic shining beacon of Sandlers talent - he plays a victim of 9/11 - his family gone and Sandler doesn't know how to cope - he resolves to becoming more of an obsessive compulsive whom does nothing all day but paint his apartment and resort to childish habits - that is until he runs into old college roommate Don Cheadle (who is a wonderful actor but is out shined by Sandler in this picture) and the two through their own sense of humanity and belief fix their lives for better for worse- Don Cheadle is perfectly cast as the upper middle class successful Dentist who doesn't see the point in life anymore because all excitement and fun has been drained from it. Cheadle is an extremely polished actor who is always a pleasure to watch. The chemistry between the two actors is visible but isn't the most heart warming of relationships which weakens the depth of the movie which is why I have not given it 100%. However, the direction is spell binding, the cinematography incredible (you will never see New York shown in a more beautiful and haunting light) not to mention an awesome soundtrack including tracks from Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and the Who. Watch this guys its amazing and you will be surprised.

Feels Pretty Good

I saw Reign Over Me yesterday and I really enjoyed it. It was never boring and the on screen chemistry between Don Cheadle and Adam Sandler was intriguing. One of the things I liked best is the way Don Cheadle handled the dilemma of the annoying lady in his office. We so often see the opposite in the movies these days. It was quite refreshing to have someone make good moral choices. There was no one having sex in the movie and that was unique. So often people have to put sex scenes in the movies to increase interest. Everyone was well cast. The music was really good. The movie was very believable. Adam Sandler so completely played his part that I almost forgot he can be so hilarious.

Not nearly as powerful as it's potential, still a strong popcorn muncher

With a serviceable poignancy Mike Binder's latest film manages to tap into the heavy and painful psychological realities revolving around severe loss some occurred during the terrorist attacks of September 11th without feeling too depressing. Starting off strongly enough, the unique buddy movie finds two old college roommates reconvening after almost two decades to find much has changed. Each character in turn will help bring out the other's missing attributes in an ongoing mellow but bumpy adventure to become whole again. Despite identical mechanics present here that so many other friend-styled films have expressed, Binder's script manages to keep the material somewhat fresh, obviously letting the subtleties of 9/11 creep into the focus with an unsuspecting punch.Guided by the always likable Don Cheadle, continuing a humanistic relate-ability that towers over almost all American actors, the real surprise for many will be Adam Sandler's dramatic role. By far his most accomplished dramatic work to date (not exactly meaning all that much), his troubled, antisocial character still plays too similarly to his other big dramatic turn in Punch Drunk Love at times to truly consider this a unique performance. The longer the running time becomes, the more serious Sandler gets, and the less realistic his acting becomes. The third act does seem to struggle finding the right closure for a previously engaging ninety minutes, ultimately alleviating some of the charming realism that dots this production. Similarly it is in the most subtle of moments, particularly during the development stage, that this movie finds a signature voice to vent these universal pains amidst an unfortunately more lighthearted, fun pace. Once the intense climax has taken place however, many viewers may be wondering where the thunderous rush of cathartic release the entire film promised to deliver went. Regardless, Reign Over Me is still a fine diversion from your typical dramady, presenting a few powerful themes amongst the more audience-friendly entertainment.

Reign Over Me is about a man who loses his entire family, including his wife and kids, in 9/11. He apparently becomes so distressed that he can't work anymore, and can't do much of anything really. Then his old college roommate ends up finding him (a couple different times actually) in the streets of New York and befriends him to help him get over the tragedy.Reign Over Me is a contrived, cliché ridden mess. The subplot of the dentist's patient who wants badly to give him a BJ is just ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous is the part she ends up playing towards the end of the movie. This could've been a good movie with a better script and better director. But I guess you could say that about any bad movie.

Reign Over Me did not convince me

Any time in which a comedian tries to do something serious trying to prove his talent goes beyond of making us laugh, the result is unpredictable. Some comedians received acclamation, like Steve Carell and Robin Williams, some of them are still trying, like Jim Carrey. But Adam Sandler...he started pretty well with a great performance in Punch Drunk Love, but he continued with the tedious film Spanglish and, now,he tries to ''consecrate'' with Reign Over Me,a failed drama with a lot of cheap sentimentalism. The use of the tragedy of September 11th in the story seems a coward trick to seek protection in the good will of the public and to generate respect.I mean, there's nothing in the movie which justifies the use of that tragedy.I mean, the main character's family could have died of anything and nothing would have changed the story. But,forgetting about that element,I'll try to analyze the movie as any other drama. And,from that point of view,it results a failed film.First of all,we have Sandler.I appreciate the effort he does to do something different from his dumb comedies but, simply,he's not a good actor. His performance on this movie is very simple and it's not credible. And his expressions usually fall on the ones he does on his comedies(take-offs of ire,stammering,etc.).Don Cheadle is a brilliant actor but Reign Over Me does not show all the talent this actor has.Reign Over Me is a movie which had good intentions but they were not well used.I do not know if I can recommend this film.

Time and time again, it seems that the comedic actors of Hollywood are surprising me with their talents as dramatic performers: first it was Robin Williams {'One Hour Photo (2002)'}, then it was Jim Carrey {'Eternal Sunshine… (2004)' being one example}, then Will Ferrell {'Stranger than Fiction (2006)'} and now Adam Sandler. Yes, that's absolutely right: the guy who has based an entire career on making brainless, goofball comedies {I'm not complaining; I've always been a fan} has finally given me a performance of which he can be proud. Of course, some readers may be wondering whatever happened to 'Punch-Drunk Love (2002),' but I can only assure you that it's a film I'm currently taking measures to see as soon as possible, since I've heard it's terrific. My first film from director Mike Binder, 'Reign Over Me,' is an intelligent and respectful exploration of grief and friendship. Though it does occasionally stray into all-too-familiar territory, the somewhat predictable storyline proves surprisingly deep and moving, with both Sandler and Don Cheadle giving memorable performances.Alan Johnson (Cheadle) is a successful dentist with a good family, though he finds himself unable to communicate adequately with his wife (Jada Pinkett Smith) and so his marriage is a little shaky. Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) is Alan's ex-college roommate, a man who lost his entire family in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and who is still confronting his overwhelming feelings of grief. A disheveled figure with messy hair and downcast eyes {often likened in appearance to Bob Dylan}, Charlie has abandoned his career in dentistry, and spends his time in solitude: listening to music with headphones that cut out all sound from the outside world, driving around Manhattan in his motorised scooter, immersing himself in fantastical video games and repeatedly redecorating his apartment kitchen in accordance with his deceased wife's final wishes. When Alan and Charlie meet for the first time in years, the latter doesn't even recognise an old friend, having completely abandoned any memories prior to his life-crippling experience. Indeed, at first he doesn't even acknowledge the existence of his family, and abruptly loses his temper whenever anybody suggests that he seek counselling.Initially, it may seem a bit exploitative for the filmmakers to be using the September 11 attacks as a storytelling device. Afterall, wouldn't it be just as devastating if Charlie's family had died in an ordinary, everyday car accident? However, if you consider that the director's intention was to demonstrate the enormous pain caused to ordinary citizens by the tragedy, then 'Reign Over Me' does a very good job. It's easy to get so caught up in meaningless statistics that you neglect the emotional costs of the terrorist attacks; this is the first 9/11-orientated film I've seen that truly dealt with the suffering of those who weren't even involved, whose only anguish was caused through losing those whom they loved. Adam Sandler shows surprising range in a difficult role, one which would have crumbled to pieces had he not been up to the task. Snapping instantly between cheerfulness, anger and depression, Charlie Fineman is a man with whom we can deeply sympathise, a hollow soul who, thanks to the companionship of an old friend, can finally glimpse light at the end of a dark, bleak tunnel.
