PLOT SUMMARY

Jake Green is a hotshot gambler, long on audacity and short on common sense. He's rarely allowed to play in any casino because he is a winner. Jake has taken in so much money over the years, he is the only client of his accountant and older brother Billy. One night, Jake, Billy and their other brother Joe are invited to sit in on a private game, where Jake is expected to lose to Dorothy Macha, a crime boss and local casino owner who can't play for squat, but always wins because people are too scared to beat him. Jake isn't afraid of Macha, and not only beats Dorothy in a quick game of chance, but takes every possible opportunity to insult the man. Jake and his brothers leave the game, and Macha puts out the order for a hit on Jake, who ends up working for and being protected by a pair of brothers, Avi and Zack, who are out to take Macha down.

manga animation?? umm what for?

posted on 30 Aug 2009

well to be honest, i had so many expectations for "guy Richie's" new film as i loved lock stock and snatch! but this film made me think that Richie is starting to go as adventures a Madonna has? it seems he has tried to hard in making a film that baffles your head that much you cant understand what the hell is going on which , in some cases is a good thing, but not here I'm sorry... Revolver starts off with Jake (statham) leaving prison after a few years and then trying to get something back from a casino manager, probably money, then he falls ill with a rare blood disease and then meets loan shark Andre 3000 , who saves his life?? and then??? well i kind of lost it there? maybe the story is the biggest flaw in the movie but I'm not saying it was bad I'm just saying it was too hard to view just once I've gotta get the DVD when it comes out and see what the hell was going on?apart from some cracking special affects and the odd slick photography you would expect in a film like this,,, thats about it, oh yeah, I'm sorry but, lose the manga animation?? it wasn't needed, it just added to the confusion? this film pushed me to give it a 3 out of 10 but thats just out of pure trust for guy Richie who i have the funny feeling is missing his old producer Matt Vaughan?Go and see it anyway, make your own mind up but don't hang round at the end of the film waiting for the credits!

Unique

Okay, Why give this film 9/10 you may be asking? It's unique is my answer!I love films that make you think and this film certainly has the mental stimulation i was after. Maybe to much...but still! On the way home, all me and my mate talked about was revolver, trying to unravel the many mysteries of the film and whether they actually could be answered. After about an hour into the conversation i realised "this is what he wanted" (and by "he" i mean Mr Ritchie) he wants you to go away from the film and actually have to think about it. There aren't many films that can do that, so this is the reason for such a high rating! With snatch being my favourite ever film i was initially disappointed to realise they carry no resemblance, but then concluded this to be a good thing as i don't want the same film over again... i want something new, something an audience hasn't witnessed before! and this IS IT!!!When i heared that Mr Andre 3000 was trying his hand at acting i thought "oh no, another musician trying to cross into acting" and was expecting terrible things. I have to say, i was quite astonished by this mans acting abilities....one to look out for.So my advice...for what it's worth, go see this film but with low expectations as i did. Then you cannot be too disappointed, you may even love it like me, or maybe i'm in the major minority there!before you go see this film, ask yourself this.....do films need to make sense? If YES, stay at home If No, go have fun! :D

Avoid like the plague

After seeing "Driven" on a plane flight to America 3 years ago I truly believed I had seen the worst film ever created, and I could relax safe in the knowledge I would never have to suffer that much in front of a screen ever again. Unfortunately as I found out last night this was not the case. Revolver is so monstrously bad I am actually thinking about recommending friends to go and see it, just so I don't feel like I'm the only one stupid enough for being conned into watching this. Its really quite amazing how much this film falls completely on its face with the constant, and I mean CONSTANT voice overs of the main characters, with totally inane pretentious nonsense! I was actually getting angry in the cinema listening to Andre Benjamin's utterly relentless droning for what seemed like half the film, whilst all the time thinking - what would Turkish have done to this complete joke of gangster/con man, whatever he's supposed to be, when he made his "offer"? I'll tell you what. He would have told him to f**k off, blown his head away, and watch with utter disdain as his equally inept partner waddles away as fast as his chubby little legs would carry him. I mean what are we supposed to believe is going through Jake's head when they offer him their "solution" to his problem? They're con men, therefore they must obviously also have the skill to cure incurable blood diseases! I mean ffs. Doesn't he start to wonder why his symptoms aren't getting worse? Doesn't the penny drop on the third day what is happening instead of Richie subjecting the audience to a painfully patronising phone call from Avi to Jake to let him know he's been conned. Anyway, I can add a small positive note to the film by moving on to the dry humour if provides, thankfully of a similar standard to his previous films……. bulls**t! This film doesn't try anything as smart as redeeming itself through some well timed amusing lines, oh no. It somehow managed to be so disastrously unfunny I genuinely didn't hear so much as a titter from a completely packed cinema – and anyone who knows the UGC in Sheffield knows how full a main screen can get, and not 1 person so much as smiled. Maybe he never wanted the film to be funny, and fair enough you can still make good gangster films without comedy, but what was he planning on hanging this film on may I ask? The unnecessarily baffling plot!?? I sincerely hope not!By far the most satisfying moment I went through last night was hearing the very loud sighing coming from ALL directions of the audience as everyone desperately prayed for the film to end. It was also really quite amusing watching just how fast patrons were fighting and dashing for the exits after they realised it was over, and they were free from their torment!I'll round this off (I've got to finish, writing this is making me angry again) by elaborating on the "end". I mean sh**t! The ending….. no, sorry I can't, your just going to have to go and see it. It can't be put in words, it just can't, and after you've seen it you'll know why. Uuhhhhh – shudders –

I don't think I've ever felt this let down by a film before. After loving Guy Ritchie's two previous films (I don't count Swept Away - he was pussy blind), I was so looking forward to seeing this. The reviews were poor, then again, I don't trust the press anyway. More worrying was the fact that the internet buzz was that this was a bit of a stinker, so it was with some trepidation I handed over my £4.80 yesterday afternoon.I'm not even going to try to explain this film, mainly because I haven't got a clue what was going on and at one point I was honestly close to standing up and asking if it was just me who didn't get it! Unfortunately I think Ritchie seems to have fallen into his wife's trap of taking himself far too seriously. It seems it wasn't good enough for him to make films with good plots, laughs, snappy dialogue and good characters. It's almost as if he had a checklist of films he wanted to rip off, here are some of the ones I noticed:The Matrix, Fight Club, Kill Bill, The Usual Suspects, Vanilla Sky...I think the most frustrating thing is that the performances from the two main actors, Jason Statham and Ray Liotta, were actually very good and it was really the self indulgent story and editing / direction that let the film down.So a big, big thumbs down from me.

Excellent Movie !

The message that Mr Ritchie is trying to express in this movie apparently went way over the heads (and minds) of a majority of people, including the pro cinema critics.I find this movie absolutely brilliant in every way. Anybody who's expecting to see a Snatch-type movie will be disappointed. Not much humor here, but Ritchie deals with some very interesting psychological/spiritual issues... As usual, the action is fantastic and very well filmed. And again, there is something deeply mystical about the plot, so i can imagine that some people got easily lost and took the recurring "thoughts" that keep popping up for some pretentious intellectual mambo-jumbo. But it really isn't : the message of this movie brings us closer to philosophies like Buddhism and taoism.Mr Ritchie, i'm an ever greater fan now !

sleek and stylish

when i started to watch this movie today, honestly, i was expecting a fast action gangster flick but as the movie moves it becomes interesting not only because of its sleek styling and the presentation but because of its story and dialogs.what the movie is trying to say about a man who fights his inner evil, though its does leave some questions unanswered, but it truly was a nice movie and is very underrated on IMDb.i wasn't expecting much when i read the reviews here but the movie was really good, it is not for general viewers who like bang-bang type actions.if you are just another viewer of non-sense movies, i would not suggest u to watch this movie because then you would be searching for answers in the threads section!!!!!but if you are go ahead and watch the movie and listen to the dialogs and try to link whatever you can and for unanswered questions, well, thats what keeps the fuss, dose'nt it?????

Wow this is a confusing one i watched this film last night on DVD having missed it at the cinema. It was not what i had expected at all. Whilst viewing at times i was frustrated, annoyed, mystified. But also entertained, interested and encapsulated. I went to bed pondering the film and have spent most of the day thinking it over. The marketing for the film had led me up one alley and actually seeing the film pulled a U-turn on me. Its so much more than i expected. I like the concept and premise of the enemy within. Guy Ritchie has brought it to screen in a fashion that will not suit everyone but ultimately if you embrace it you get the answers to the questions that are raised. I also think that those questions and answers will differ vastly between viewers as will there reaction to the film.I like it, it's a dangerous move on Guy's part to put out a film marketed as a bog standard genre movie turn it on its head and see what people think. He 's obviously set out to achieve a thought provoking film set apart from the everyday. Through slick direction and cracking performances from his cast he has made a film that doesn't leave you, It stays in your mind whether you think it good or bad. You certainly won't feel indifferent. It's a piece work which has got people talking. Guy Ritchie should be proud of this project as it would seem he has masterfully achieved what he set out to do.

Unoriginal and monotonous

Snatch and Lock Stock were brilliant movies. Smart, stylish and smooth. Revolver tries an entirely different tack. It went for a bit of psychoanalysis and tries to show us the inner natures of all of us through the main characters and a bunch of gangsters. What I felt, however, was that the movie tried too many gimmicks and none of them worked. Random cartoon scenes in the middle for no reason and which adds nothing to the story, and too many extremely cliché lines being said over and over again takes away from the movie. Like 'The greatest trick you ever pulled was making him believe he is you'. And a few others as well which kept on annoyingly repeating throughout the movie. The main storyline, and the major parts of the movie, would have been enough to sustain interest and make a good movie. Instead this comes out as a mixed bag of used tricks. And after trying a rehash of every pop-idealized psychoanalytical bullshit and used directorial techniques possible, the movie comes across as just lame.I have nothing against a movie trying for something new. But this one didn't succeed. Hopefully he'll have better luck next time.

Possibly the worst film of all time and I've seen Dirty Dancing

This pile of pants is probably the worst film you will ever see. Should you have the misfortune to go to see it, don't say you weren't warned. When I say pants I don't mean nice pants either or even run-of-the-mill pants but proper minging pants. I defy anybody, who sees this, to leave the cinema with the faintest idea of what it is about. Here's the plot. A man comes out of jail. Two years later he goes to see his old boss and takes him for a few hundred K. This is after some mystifying and quite frankly tedious dialogue about: well I can't remember what it was about actually because I lost the will to live half way through it. He is then set upon by some con artists who convince him he is going to die. He then does their bidding for pretty much the rest of the film. They set about ripping off/stitching up his former boss in every way they can. There is a lot of talk about identity and someone convincing you that they are you or that you are them or that you are not them or that they are not you. No seriously it's that bad. Then it ends. Thank god. In between all the endless unfathomable talk some people get nailed to stuff and a few others get shot and there are some mostly naked women who sit around.I read an extract from an interview with Guy Riche where he explained how had spent a very long time writing and rewriting the script. Funny, because it looked like it had been knocked up by a gang of five year olds on crack, with wax crayons. It comes across as incoherent, unstructured, dialogue heavy, unfinished and lacking in any coherent narrative. This is a highly pretentious film which seems to have convinced itself that it is clever in some way. If cleverness means that the audience cannot even understand half of the dialogue, let alone plot twists then clever it is. I sat through two hours of this mind numbing, ego maniacal dross and paid for the privilege. Guy Ritchie you should hang your head in shame for having spent perfectly good money on such a film. The twenty or thirty million dollars that this fiasco probably cost could have been spent on something more worthwhile like guns or drugs. In future Mr Ritchie, when you decide to sit down and write a script; don't. Stop writing now; you are no good at it. Spend a million or so on a proper writer. There are plenty out there.

Perhaps a film that will improve with (a lot of) time?

Maybe Revolver is like Guy Ritchie says, a film you have to think about, even do research on, to even understand a little about what it's trying to say? I remember not liking Fargo the first or even the second time I say it, but after thinking about it and researching the SE DVD, etc., I now understand it (a little), but like it quite a lot. This took years, so I'm going to forget about Revolver, and come back to it in a few years time, watch it again (which would be the 3rd or 4th time), and see what I think then. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that it may still be too complicated for me to overcome the barriers to understanding that it puts in your way. Maybe Guy expects a little too much from his viewers, and very few people will be prepared to put in the effort that this film requires? If that's so, then at least I can enjoy the visual feast of action, colour, editing, photography, directing, etc., if nothing else. At least it's not boring...Cheers, Greg.

A good film, but generally flawed, and overly complex

OK, so the critics have and will slate Ritchie's latest movie. Even at the premiere in London it didn't get the greatest of applause, although I think this was due to everyone being in a state of confusion. The movie tries to explain itself to a certain extent, but never truly becomes clear. The plot is full of holes too, and often wanders or doesn't follow on properly. The cartoon part of the film (very Kill Bill) is quite random and not really necessary in my opinion.I think to enjoy this film, you may need to watch it twice, keep an open mind, and not expect a definitive ending like in Snatch or Lock Stock. I think the film will probably grow on me over time, and once I've had time to think through it.On a good note, Guy Ritchie does direct the movie in his usual slick style, and again there's a brilliant and well suited soundtrack. The acting performances are good, not excellent, but still solid all round. I was especially impressed by Jason Statham's performance.A movie that will probably mature over time, but will initially get bad reviews for alienating and confusing the viewer too much. It'll certainly have you talking/questioning it though.

Stratham with hair!!!

There was a lot of pressure to surpass his previous films and within the first three quarters I actually felt that he had made a very dark intelligent movie until.... The first part of the film has many twists which delve deeper into the mystery of the situations which arise around the main character which kept my interest through out. As the end draws near you expect to be given some satisfying answers as an explanation of what has already occurred. Like most good films the viewers patience is rewarded with an explanation or answer to the mystery however this just gets to that point and then drowns in obscurity which doesn't fit the rest of the film. There is also a very questionable scene full of awful computer animation much like kill bill. Kill bill had animation as the film was in the directors words a homage to Japanese cinema and culture and the animation was done properly by the company who bought you ghost in the shell, that said and done why did Guy Richie choose to have an out of place comic book/cg moment half way through the film? I really did enjoy the majority of the movie unfortunately leaving the viewer spending the rest of the day trying to figure out answers not given to explain any of the film is not what I would call a positive attribute. More so a lost in translation between the director (if he knows what is going on) and the viewer.

Makes you think!

As Guy Ritchie said, 'If you don't get it, then you have to question your own intelligence'. I thought this movie was great, thought-provoking and provocative. I loved the scenes with Liotta and I loved how it tackled great themes, that I won't go into in case I ruin the film for anyone. All of the acting was superb, yes it is complex and yes you do get the twist about half way through and yes you are left asking more questions - but how manymovies do you still want to talk about for hours/days/weeks afterwards? A classic in the making, go and see it and make up your own mind.

A great film

I have just finished watching this film and I can honestly say that this is a work of art. I was very surprised to see the overall rating as 5.2.Not only does Guy bring together a b list(ish) movie cast and make them into such glorious characters, he has given us a movie with a fantastically diverse story line with much left to the imagination.Far too many people are wanting movies with a plot that can be understood and handed to them on a plate...yet these are the films that get poor reviews because they are far too predictable. This film is special. Get it, now!

Yea i didn't get it either.....but i liked it

First of all, don't go into Revolver expecting another Snatch or Lock Stock, this is a different sort of gangster film.I saw the gala the other night and this movie definitely split the audience. It's the kind of movie where half the audience will leave thinking WHAT was that? That was awful, and the other half will leave thinking WHAT was that? That was cool. Personally i like films that i don't understand, i.e.Mullholland Drive, and Usual Suspects, so i enjoyed Revolver. It definitely wasn't perfect though. I saw the big twist coming a mile away, at least part of it, and though sometimes some loose ends left unexplained is good, Revolver leaves A LOT of questions unexplained for no reason it seemed. Also some scenes, like the animation, and the scene where Sorter goes on a killing spree(actually one of my favourites), although, awesome scenes to watch, seemed to just be there because they were awesome to watch, not because they fit in with the movie. However there were many good things too. I thought the acting was superb from all the main actors, Jason stratham, Ray Liotta, Vincent Pastore, and even Andre Benjamin(who was a pleasant surprise). This movie definitely kept my interest, with one great, suspenseful, action packed, scene after another. When Ray Liotta was being held under the table wow....well you have to see it. The script was extremely well done, and the soundtrack, as with most Guy Ritchie films, was great.Though a step below such movies as,Fight Club, Mullholland Drive, and Usual Suspects, it was still an awesome fast paced, psychological, action movie, with many twists and turns and tons of scenes you will remember long after the movie is over.

A thinking movie.

Luc Besson and Guy Ritchie join forces to create quite perhaps one of the most brilliant films ever released in this decade. The script is marvelous, Liotta shines as brightly as he did years ago, and Statham gives a great performance that doesn't require him beating the crap out of anyone; he is incredibly vulnerable in this film, see it and you will see why.Revolver is a thinking movie. It questions our inner self, it questions the human mind, and it questions the power that the mind can have over us, if we aren't careful to control it. What seems like a Heist flick or a gambling movie, turns out to be something more than that. I really don't want to spoil anything, except that you should keep an open mind when viewing this one.Acting in a Guy Ritchie flick is incredibly weird, but in a good way. In Revolver, Statham and Liotta shine like never before, delivering very good performances, and in Liotta's case, the best in years. Another thing you can expect in a Guy Ritchie film is a bizarre cast of secondary characters, with weird names and weirder attitudes. In Revolver that doesn't happen sadly. Sorter (Mark Strong) is the only quirky character in this one, the others are just the generic/doofy gangsters that we've seen time and time again. The acting overall is very good. On a side note, Andre Benjamin can't act. I hope I never see his face ever in any film, and thank god he didn't have that much scenes in this one. There are a lot of people bashing this film. I can understand that, hell I thought this was something completely different to what I just witnessed. And that's the beauty of it though, it keeps you guessing and wondering as to what the hell is going on. For people with an open mind and for people who like to think a little, see this film. For others expecting some sort of Vegas heist flick that they've seen countless times before, move along elsewhere. I praise Ritchie for doing something different, especially in these stale times that are filled with Remakes and Rip Offs of better films. An 8/10, great film.

Always a pleasant ending in a mindful master piece. I really enjoyed the crafting of this mind twisting movie. The added bonus to the end with Dr.'s from various practices was a touch of gold. The cast was a mix of brilliance. would would of thought Adre' 3000 was a fantastic actor. Ray played a skit-so to a tee in the end of this film. The Big Guy from the Sapranos always gives me the creeps, at least this Sapranos guy didn't have to play a gay character in this film. Jason has become one of the best action pact thrillers in most of his movies. I enjoyed him in this one as well. All in all I give a strong 8 out of 10 on this one.

Genius!

Since I live in the U.S. I couldn't find this movie anywhere and no one even knows about it. I had a buddy send it to me from the UK. and it was worth it. Ritchie does a tremendous job of bringing the whole movie into one mold with music, lighting, cinematography, and acting. The storyline is a refreshing original non-Hollywood style which I find to be great! Open to interpretation throughout the whole movie, the viewer is part of the actual events. Ritchie definitely puts his style of directing into the mix. The post work on this movie was brilliantly done. I will say, though most may disagree, Andre' Benjamin wasn't that great. It was like he was trying to hard or something to pull off the character. I liked him better in "Be Cool". Statham is simply a great actor and Liota is, well, who can expect anything less? See this movie!

Guy Ritchie "Revolver"

posted on 27 Jun 2009

"Lock, Stock and Two smoking barrels" was the first movie and it was explosive. "Snatch" was one level above. The director's love of the beautiful juicy shot was quite explicitly revealed in this film. "Revolver" is irreproachable in its beauty. And, nevertheless, the idea prevails above everything. The Idea is the driving motive of any action on the screen. It is not going to be easy to surpass "Revolver". All the talents of Ritchie – the skill to not get lost in the sophisticated script architecture and not to entangle the viewer come together in this movie. He, as the most skillful designer, clothes the clear and distinct idea into multi-layered garments, so that we can drink in its wealth and beauty. Is it done to entice us to find out what is hidden behind all this splendor? But the brain besotted with the show cannot stand the sight of the sudden revelation of cankered flesh and writhes with pain. Is the film director laughing at us, demonstrating Destruction itself, self-destruction? Will everyone want to see how the true lineaments show through on the faces of the carrion characters? What is this film about, what is it for and why? What can it be compared to? It is a drama, emotional and distressing. It is a criminal action movie with black humor and numerous quotations. This is a psychological thriller which burns our will and strength by violently assaulting our personal philosophies. It is, without doubt, one of my favorite films. When Jake Green (Jason Statham) finds himself locked in his cell between the two wisest and most dangerous criminals, he involuntarily becomes an apprentice in the most complicated chess game. His jail mates who for many years have been working out the ideal formula which would allow them to conceive the secrets of any game and break the bank, polish their skills and involve Jake in the process. They use textbooks on chess theory and gambling, quantum mechanics and astrophysics, and not the juggling balls. Jake turns out to be a talented student, and his unusual fellow prisoners plan a joint break-out. He fails to understand that it is the game and only the game that matters, the idea, and not its money equivalent. As the result, he is thrown into loneliness till the end of his seven-years sentence with that ideal formula as a farewell gift. The cell neighbors disappear in one and the same day, not leaving any traces of their break-out, or even existence. After Jake gets out of prison, he understands that his "friends" who know all the privy secrets about him, bled him dry in the most impudent way. All that was left was the note: "Rule No. 1: you can only get smarter by playing a smarter opponent" But he still has their formula, and it starts working, and how! Within two years, Jake becomes filthy rich, and finally takes the decision to start an open fight with his old enemy and the person to be blamed for many of his misfortunes – Dorothy Macha (Ray Liotta). How will he take revenge on Macha? Money, the foundation of his welfare and good sleep. The loss of money means the loss of business, helplessness and humiliation. What happens as the result? It is Jake Green who loses all the money, not Macha. Defeat? Let's not jump to conclusions. The sharks-moneylenders Zach (Vincent Pastore) and Avi (Andre Benjamin) who so unexpectedly appeared in Jake's life, offer their protection from Macha who has started to hunt Jake. They manage to dexterously convince Jake, who was almost shot, to give them all his money in exchange for protection and to act exclusively under their guidance. To take revenge with Macha by other means, in a different way, Jake decides to play this game, believing that in any game there is always an opponent and a victim, the trick is to realize in time that you've become the latter and to become the former. And here the mysterious Mr. Gold comes on the scene with stunning effect! Sam Gold, mister Magus, the dream and the object of desire of all the criminal bosses. The Grand-master of cons. Even if the revolver shoots, it is the idea which will win, because it is more powerful, always. Mr. Gold starts his party with both Macha and Jake. "There is no avoiding war, it can only be postponed to the advantage of your enemy." The chaos is mysterious. It can destroy everything, but it can also create something new and more perfect. That chaos in which Jake and Macha find themselves starts raging in both of them with unbelievable intensity. When Jake understands that he is deceived, the mosaic fallen apart starts to get restored piece by piece. One by one. Zach and Avi try to convince Jake of a way to defeat Gold (who uses human pain and pity for his own ends as a deception, skillfully playing on the weaknesses and the malices of everyone). "The greatest enemy will hide in the last place you would ever look"... The strongest scene in the film is the episode in the elevator. Nowhere to run, the walls are drawing near, and there will be only one who will win. And Jake is winning the play-off against the most sophisticated con artist. We can observe what this game costs him. And we can try ourselves... Macha is losing. He is losing in the extreme fight. And many of us are losing as well – together with Macha. And the phenomenal ending! The revolver shoots, but it is the idea that wins. Because it is stronger, always.
