It was a tense one though interesting

These days really many people get out of court for things they did and had to get penalty for ... Working in police for many years as a team regardless to things happen they stayed friends till the end. Not a deep movie and was saved just because of brilliant play of actors. Just the other day I saw Russian movie ( Ice Age with Alexader Abdulov ) Same topic though it was slightly different in 90-x while Russia was going through difficult times. Of course, I don't justify that officer did but law have to be more strict toward those criminals. And this conflict between departments makes hard to investigate things. Though it's pretty clear about jurisdictions in Russia I couldn't get how it works in US

If you are a fan of Pacino and he's in a new movie, you may go see it in the movies, rent or even buy it, the same regarding DeNiro. Put them both together somehow you will see it.I never enjoy a great movie the first time I see it. So I can't say that this is a great movie. What I was thinking during the movie was both Pacino 68 and DeNiro 65 aren't Commanders, Captains or even Asst.Chiefs. I was doing a lot of thinking as I was watching this movie, it reminded me of a lot of other movies I have seen. I was 19 when I first saw The Godfather(March 1972) on Broadway in New York City, I didn't like it then but now it's the greatest! I love movies done in the City Of New York especially crime dramas. I'm hoping that when I see the movie a second time with my son, I will enjoy it. I checked IMDb.com and Righteous Kill rating was 8.0. That was the second day it was out, that's the day I went to see the movie. The next day(third day it was out) IMDb.com rated Righteous Kill 7.4, today, fifth day( the movie is out) the rating is down 6.9. Check out the movie because it may be the last movie they do together(Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro)! Go see the movie and you decide. If you see it I hope it's one of your favorite movie of 2008!One more thought I never laughed or thought anything was funny, even in crime dramas laughing isn't against the law.

...but this routine "thriller" (which has all the build and tension of a Veteran's Day parade) is a pretty sad excuse of a vehicle for two modern day acting legends to share a screen. Director Jon "88 Minutes" Avnet has directed three films I enjoyed a great deal. "Righteous Kill" is not one of them. Writer Russell "Inside Man" Gewirtz can pen a good thriller; "Righteous Kill" is not one of them. The technical aspects of the film are competent, if unspectacular. It's gritty and dirty, much like the dialog, a decent piece of noir-ish, though very, very predictable entertainment. The story works so hard to make the viewer believe one thing that you just know it's misleading you.Worse, DeNiro and Pacino are just plain too old for this sort of stuff. Both are looking their age, especially Pacino, and the concept of Carla "Threshold" Gugino making time with DeNiro boggles the mind. In Kentucky, he'd be old enough to be her grandfather, and despite the intimations of a certain kink in her sexual personality, one can't help but laugh at the thought of the two of them together. John "Land of the Dead" Leguizamo, Donnie "Band of Brothers" Wahlberg, and Brian "Silverado" Dennehy do yeoman's service in their supporting roles, along with a variety of rappers pretending to be actors. It's all pretty much for nothing, since the film just sits there preening itself, seeming to say, "Look at me! I got street cred, and I gots two of the baddest mo-fo actors right here in tandem, together on screen, no less, trash-talking with the best of 'em and shootin' dirtbags like there's no tomorrow!" All I can answer is, "That's all you got? Puh-lease! C'mon back when you've got an interesting, involving story with characters I can actually give a rat's butt about, okay? And btw, tell big Al he's looking like hell these days, and his buddy Bob ain't lookin' too good, either."Maybe it's time for "Grumpy Old Men: The Retirement."

Just saw Righteous Kill.

Not good. It's like watching DeNiro and Pacino doing an episode of Murder She Wrote. But a poorly written episode. You've seen everything in this movie before. Nothing original. It's kinda cool when you see DeNiro and Pacino together but you're instantly pulled out of it by the bad writing. Then you have to deal with the boring art direction, crap cinematography, and awful editing. It also feels like the entire movie was shot in four locations. And get this. Deniro's wardrobe for the entire climax is a grey hoodie sweat suit. Full top and bottom set. Deniro's supposed to be looking all bad ass, but he comes off looking like my grandfather at the local gym. Seriously, he was dressed like Estelle Getty. These guys deserve so much better. And it's all sad cause you want to like the movie. Admirable job from DeNiro and Pacino working from an awful script. I found the whole thing cliché and trying too hard. Sorry guys, hope you got paid well.

All the elements are there but the direction, making a failure

This film has the budget, it has the cast, it has the setting, it even has the gall to try to be a cop thriller after that genre is long dead. What it doesn't have is a director who gives a damn about what he's doing. In the absence of a good story, the actors can still make a good movie if you let them. They can give great performances and have great scenes, even if the scenes don't add up to a good story in the end. Unfortunately, Avnet never lets Deniro, Pacino, or anyone else have a good scene. He never takes them out of the package. Basically, if you see the movie poster, you see their whole performances. All of the shots are poorly framed. Really, all of them. It is an entire movie based on head shots, as if you're watching it on zoom. Also, it is narrated. Narration fails 99% of the time. Go ahead and think it out: how many movies have you seen with narration, and how many of those movies have been good? The movie feels like it never really starts, for a long time it feels like it is stuck in the intro/expository stage, and by the time I realized that it wasn't a stage, it was the tone of the whole film, the movie was half over. This is because there is no first act and no second act, it is just a montage leading to a climax. This is probably the best cast since NIXON or THE INSIDER or OCEAN'S 11, and the worst use of a good cast ever.

What can I say?

Wow, we get to see two of the greatest actors in history team up together in more than just two scenes. This is probably going to be another classic right? Hell no.This movie basically has your average cop story except the cops are played Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Basically there is a serial killer on the loose and both teams (De Niro and Pacino are Team 1, John Leguiazamo and Donnie Wahlberg are team 2) begin to suspect each other as suspects.I don't know about most people but I predicted who the killer was in the first 15 minutes of the movie. They really could have done something more with the story,I mean its been 15 years with These two legends and inspirations to many aspiring actors, and this is the best they could come up with? The acting was mediocre, (Al Pacino got nominated for a razzie award and De Niro should have gotten one as well)but the worst actor was 50 cent.Try understanding what he says every time he opens his mouth. The story was odd and the "Twist" was pretty silly.Unless you want to see Robert De Niro and Al Pacino together in a movie, go rent this otherwise, its not worth your while.

Lame, boring, pointless

Pacino is doing his grimace/lisp/gum chewing thing, and DeNiro has been eating too much pizza. This movie was so trite, so predictable and inane it was all I could do to keep from noticing their appearance. Was there a plot? If so I missed it.The scene in the bathroom where the gal came in and did coke while Bob was pissing.. and he flashes his badge at her. What am I supposed to do.. laugh, cheer.?? Woo hoo.. you're busting a coke-snorter in a bathroom. The world is saved. The only thing I found even remotely entertaining about this film was when Pacino corrected Dennehy's use of "light year" as a measure of time. And that was as far as I could watch this dog without thinking I can't wait to write a nasty review on IMDb. And I have NEVER written a bad review on here. This movie flat out stinks. I can't imagine why either actor would agree to make such a lousy pos.

Righteous Pleasure

posted on 22 Aug 2009

First off I am going to say that I liked Righteous Kill. It is a well paced, well acted, and pretty decently directed movie. Both Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro are good in the movie. It is your typical cop film that tries (like almost everything does now) to have a surprise ending. The ending isn't a great surprise, but it does not take away from the movie. While it is well paced, it does not bring out the tension or drama that the old cop movies had---but again it is still worth seeing.Dialogue is once more my big issue---why does the F-bomb have to pollute every single thing we have anymore? Alright--kids are not going to go out and kill someone (unless they are a super nut bag) because a character does it in a movie---BUT dialog has a major influence on audiences. Think about it---you quote your favorite movies all the time---but in today's movies the quotes are just F-you, F-you---etc.Where are the great screen writers who wrote things like: (Dirty Harry) I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? Clint Eastwood did not need to cuss the entire movie to add tension and excitement. In fact, the intelligent dialog gave audiences something to quote for years and years. Today's idiot screen writers need to disappear and allow a new breed into the doors---or learn to write more than the F-word.

The performances and chemistry of the stars are there, the script isn't

Pacino. DeNiro What more could you ask for? How about a script? Disappointing cop drama about two cops investigating a killer who is taking out bad guys. Its clear that everyone involved is having a great time. DeNiro and Pacino are on target as wisecracking buddies. The supporting cast is really good. However, what they forgot was a script that wasn't anything more than a loose connection of scenes. They work fine as isolated scenes but nothing really comes together. Worse it seems that the leads are having such a good time cracking wise that they forgot to add the tension. Its not a bad movie if you take it for what it is, but I can completely understand how people were disappointed by this film. The joy of the film is watching the pair of great actors- unfortunately you wish they had something to keep you interested beyond that

Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino, actors of the most classic and memorable films now do a mediocre thriller

posted on 18 Aug 2009

Righteous Kill is one of those films that a lot of people have just been looking forward too because it has two of the greatest actors of our generation, Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. I must add how I love in a lot of the TV ad's they're saying this is their first film together, true, it's the first time they are real co-stars together, but they've had two films already. Anyways, back onto the film, Robert and Al are both incredible actors, we know that, Robert is actually my favorite actor, so naturally I was looking forward to seeing this movie, I hate to say this, oh, man, I hate to say this, but this film was an utter disappointment. I'm not saying this was a bad movie, but this was a sad and very predictable thriller that could have been done with more average actors, Al and Robert are above this script and don't pull in their best performances due to that. The story is very mediocre compared to some of these terrific actors who looked so bored throughout the move.Turk and Rooster are partners on the police force, having experienced over 30 years of constant bad guys going free, seeing the innocent's blood shed, and all the injustice in the world, they've almost lost it. Suddenly, there are murders involving the criminals they have arrested, along with younger officers, they try to figure out what is going on, but when one of the cops brings up that it might be a vigilante situation, Turk and Rooster are hesitant. Maybe they're hiding some secrets of their own.Righteous Kill, don't get me wrong, it's worth the look, especially to see these cinematic legends on screen together, but like I said, for the script they were given, this was way too average and they are above it. I even hate to say it, this was very predictable if you've seen a lot of these thriller movies of today. Not to mention, I think Al Pacino, this must have been his third movie where he has worn that same leather jacket, I mean is it just me, or does anyone else notice this? Over all, it's not a bad movie, but it could have just been done with average actors, instead of all the hype that has been around it because of the actors. Just don't be fooled, it's a typical thriller, nothing special, I suggest waiting for the rental.6/10

Disappointing Movie

posted on 16 Aug 2009

I watched this movie expecting something as gut-wrenching as Heat, the previous Pacino/De Niro collaboration, but what I got was a few hours' journey into disappointment.Despite the story having some potential, it seemed to miss something vital that separates a good cop thriller with balls above the others, and unfortunately this one lacked balls! I would have thought that Pacino and De Niro, two fine actors each with a top notch acting resume, would have been more far-sighted in their choice of collaboration - perhaps if it were directed and written by Michael Mann they would have a chance.I guess one flop in 30 years is something I can overlook as a fan of these two actors and the thriller genre!

Enjoyable Film

Pacino and De Niro are 2 Police Cops who are investigating murders made by an unknown serial killer who leaves poems behind. They are joined by two other cops who begin to suspect the other cops. This film had a lot of hype due to De Niro and Pacino being in the first film together. The story was exciting with a lot of twists and turns in it.I would certainly buy this on DVD and recommend it to a lot of people. The actor's performance were also incredible.De niro's character was very edgy but Pacino's character was never edgy rather a cool character and showed no hints of being a baddie.Overall RIghtrous Kill was a very good film and i hope they make a similar cop film like this cause it was a cop story that could maybe never be done again.

Not as bad as I was anticipating, but still nothing exceptional

Much(well,in truth,it seems like all)of the reviews on this movie were less than flattering, saying something to the tune of this:Acting legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are fun to watch together, but this movie is well below standard(for various reasons). I still wanted to see this but opted to rent it instead and,as much as I hate to say it,most of the reviews have it pretty much right on.Turk(De Niro)and Rooster(PAcino)are longtime NYPD cops who take great pride in their work. When various miscreants are able to flout the law and escape conviction, said miscreants end up being shot dead at point blank range. I don't think it takes a background in film study to deduce that these incidents coincide with our two main characters, all investigating each case, thus pointing the arrow of suspicion to them.Director Jon Avnet's love of clean, slick editing and a rapid narrative makes this an easy watch(relatively),but it doesn't give much meat for the cast(a very solid group that, besides the stars, include Brian Dennehy,CArla Gugino,Donny Wahlberg,50 Cent,Melissa Leo and John Leguizamo,a guy I'm not particularly fond of but can turn in a solid performance here and there)to work with, not to mention the way the narrative is set up from the get go(and that fault probably lies squarely on the doorstep of Russell Gewirtz, the screenplay's writer) gives the story little wiggle room besides setting up a twist that's,well, not very satisfying really.Worth a look and intriguing to be sure, and while the whole film is a disappointment, the ride through was actually somewhat better than I had expected. Credit the chemistry between the two screen legends and the compelling storyline with making this feel less like a waste, even if its not going to be in any of the cast's body of work highlight reel.

Righteous fury, anger, guts

After Robert De Niro and Al Pacino costarred in The Godfather, Part II - but didn't share time on screen - fans desperately wanted to see the two in another movie together. In 1995, the megastars appeared in Michael Mann's Heat as tough guys on opposite sides of the law. But it wasn't enough. We want more Decino, said the fans. Finally, thirteen years after Heat, we get both De Niro and Pacino on the same side of the law, as veteran NYPD cops up to their necks in corruption and murder.Rooster (Pacino) and Turk (De Niro) have been partners for a long, long time. Rooster is a little slicker, a little more PR-savvy, a little more in tune with what's going on around him. Turk is more bombastic, blunt, salivating. They're not quite like Bert and Ernie, more like Ratso Rizzo and Ratso Rizzo. At any rate, some time in the distant past the two of them conspired to frame a murderer-rapist who'd gotten off scot free, and now that particular action is coming back to haunt them. Seems there's a serial killer on the loose in the big city, a fiend who leaves calling cards with rhymed couplets written on the back.Trouble is, people soon start to assume that it's a dirty cop behind all this killing. And it's not innocent people being gunned down, either, it's really bad people. Essentially, New York has another vigilante on its hands, although no one in this movie mentions the term. Now, sometimes when a long-rumored on-screen pairing finally takes place, the results are sort of negligible. As in, okay, great, they're both there, but their combined presence doesn't add anything to the film. But here, the chemistry between the two - sort of a thespian Force - is iron strong, and the result is that you don't just get two Stars doing their patented unhinged-cop acts, you get two masters of their craft who really believe in the script and who work hard at it without seeming to labor. At times, the story feels a little tired and used, but the feeling quickly dissipates, mainly because writer Russell Gewirtz (Inside Man) throws in little hooks here and there to catch you off guard. Like how Turk's paramour (Carla Gugino), who's with Forensics, is really, really into the whole abuse game in and out of bed. And I don't mean simple stuff like handcuffing her to a bedpost, either. Or how, for once, the lieutenant (Brian Dennehy) actually believes his cops when they tell him things, like Officer X might be corrupt. Things like that don't often happen in cop movies. (The movie even recalls, to an extent, Pacino's own long-ago foray into the minigenre, in 1973's Serpico. Coincidentally, a guy named Terry Serpico has a bit part in the film.) And God help me, but I didn't see the magical twist coming. Really, I didn't. Maybe I'm just slow on the uptake. I was committed to seeing the movie end along one track, but boom! Turns out all my assumptions were wrong, based on false premises. And for once, it's not that the twist is unobvious because it's, well, ridiculous. This one makes perfect sense in hindsight, so for me it's an optimal thriller. But the real draw here is the team-up of De Niro and Pacino. For once, neither actor settles into playing a clichéd version of his earlier characters, since they've each played cops a multitude of times. They could easily have had Pacino as the wacko mercenary hiding behind the badge and De Niro as the wily, sick psychopath bent on destruction. That's pretty much what I expected, but instead we get a return to Early Days Pacino and De Niro, with two perfectly nuanced performances in an otherwise fairly straightforward cop caper.

Decent To Watch.

No doubt it s good to see two veteran actors, Robert De Nero and Al Pacino together in this cop crime, drama and thriller, which does have a rather unexpected twist. Two New York detectives, who have worked in the homicide department of the NYPD, are involved in several murder cases, begin to realise that they may have put the wrong person behind the bars, as they begin to feel that the murders are caused by a serial killer and that they have to arrest the person soon.Starring Al Pacino, Robert De Nero, 50 Cent, Carla Gugino, this is directed by Jon Avnet and is written by Russell Gewritz. It may be good to see the veteran actors back on screen, as I have mentioned and indeed I love watching their movies but unfortunately one gets the feeling that the script has not done justice to them as it is quite weak in some points even though the twists are there to keep you glued to the screen. The story does get a bit boring at times but never the less it is a good concept but, again, it is a bit slow in picking up the pace and to do justice to the movie. The other point, which I found a bit odd was the sound effects regarding the guns used by the actors – sounded like a hammer. But there are some good points to this as well such as the colour of the setting which is dark most of the time and which suits the genre of this .There are moments in which one is able to see the talents of these two main actors while the rest cast does perform OK and there's no doubt in my mind that this film belongs to Robert De Nero and Al Pacino, who have worked together previously in "The God Father." Conclusion: This movie had the potential to be a bit better then it was but if you are a fan of Al Pacino and Robert De Nero then you will not be disappointed but there is swearing and sometimes lots of it, which one may find offencive. On the whole a decent movie to watch.

A mediocre story made by 2 giants

posted on 10 Aug 2009

Righteous Kill demonstrates very palpably how actors and how we relate to them can make a weak film a masterpiece. The plot itself isn't the best or most revolutionary you'll ever come across, but when you have professionals of their calibre delivering the lines, any kind of writing gains an authority it probably shouldn't have. So many films these days rely on events rather than characters and value effect and shock more than they do the subtleties and nuances of interplay between the cast to deliver the drama itself. We often forget that we respond to people, not things or what happens. It's the effect on them that they portray that gets us hooked - the human experience on tape is what we become involved in and remember. The director tells the story from the classic double perspective that doesn't remain hidden particularly well and fails to be misleading as the end switch between the presumed suspect and supportive colleague who is actually the monster is telegraphed early on. It's predictable and slightly cliché no matter how good the leads are in their roles. What is good is the simmering testosterone all around them and the air of dark cynicism that pervades almost every scene and turn the story makes. If anything it's a fantastic example to a newer generation of actors of how the genius of Hollywood talent is to own and personify the role - to carve out the personality you've been given, and crucially, to see it in perspective with your opposite and be able to compliment them to make their own performance more powerful and their character more distinct. The scenes are following people, not events. The story is focused around them rather than trying to fit in as much actions and as many turns as you possibly can to make it look clever. Simplicity is the order of the day.The idea of righteousness could have been pursued more deeply, which is what is lacking to give the characters themselves more depth. Both tread a fragile moral line and vigilantism is something actually most of us somehow agree with in the delivery of justice, whether that be in defence of the weak or in the persecution of the evil. In that context, with that emphasis, both Pacino and De Niro's impact would be have been far greater. Sadly the old-fashioned cop drama won the day when the philosophical ambiguity could have given it considerably more weight and intensity. All in all its a masterclass for acting schools but leaves you with the dreaded feeling of an unfulfilled promise of a film that could have really hit the mark if it had the courage to take the heavier road and used substance to allow both industry giants to have wowed audiences the way the hype wanted us to believe they would have.

Great Movie

I really liked this movie, I believe Pacino and DeNiro are 2 of the best actors alive today, they do this movie great. watch it, it is some points above average, 6.5 of 10 according to me.Curtis Jackson ( 50 cent ) is not as bad as I thought, he acted well.Story is really connected to reality and I found myself thinking like both Pacino and DeNiro.I recommend this movie.See it and enjoy.I wonder if this 2 actors will perform again before they die ? I really hope so.

Watch,Only if you want to see the Giants!!!

Certainly not the best platform for seasoned powerhouse performers Pacino and De Niro, but hey seeing these two together is in itself a treat, no matter what. Although the plot was not that bad at all and neither was the treatment but then not a kind of movie for these two giants to meet. I must also admit if it was not for these actors I wouldn't have bothered myself in watching this movie. OK, so my comment so far doesn't justify my rating. But I have a good reason for spending valuable 7 on this movie: Screen presence of Niro and Pacino (Duh!!)Both actors got chance to show some of their usual character traits they are famous for, dark side, shouting, swearing. My God they still got it, they are still as hungry as before and yes they are old and it shows on their body but I mean common, just throw them right script, and right team.Plot was interesting with a good twist, but again not any special.Good attempt by director with occasional use of some witty dialogs. Overall it was entertaining, even more so to see these two performers together. I would not recommend it unless you want to see Niro and Pacino in action together. Sorry guys for very bias comment, but can't help. I just wish to see these two greats together in one movie which will be a pure treat to movie fans. I am not sure if that will happen anytime now, but still have to start somewhere so here's a wish.

many interesting points to note

comment #1 first of all this guy Jon av net is no genius in direction. this film was very poorly directed.i wonder how he got De niro and Pacino to act in this film.instead of Jon av net i think it would have been appropriate for either martin Scorsese or Michael Mann and if both r not available , David Fincher.secondly, the plot is kinda flawed.i could guess who the killer was after 30 minutes and it only remained how he went about it.thirdly,i couldn't understand a word of what 50 cent was saying and thank god he was there for only a bout 20 minutes on the whole.fourthly, the chemistry between Al Pacino and Robert De niro was great and so was their acting(u can hardly expect less of two great actors like them) overall this film was not bad but would have been a flop if not for De niro and Pacino.

unworthy of these stars' talents

You'd think that for their first real movie together - if one discounts a single scene they shared in "Heat" and non-intersecting roles in "The Godfather Part II" - cinema icons Robert De Niro and Al Pacino could have found a more worthy vehicle than "Righteous Kill," a run-of-the-mill, gimmicky thriller whose sole purpose for existence hinges on a turnabout ending that anyone with even half a brain cell or attention span can see coming a mile off.De Niro gets to play Travis Bickle with a badge as a 30-year veteran of the NYPD who turns to vigilantism after too many of the suspects he arrests get off on technicalities. Pacino is De Niro's longtime partner who seems unaware of what his fellow officer is up to on his off hours.De Niro and Pacino are both pros enough not to embarrass themselves unduly during the course of the film, but they are hardly helped by an implausible screenplay (Russell Gewirtz) and claustrophobic direction (Jon Avnet), not to mention ugly photography and unflattering lighting that make them look even older and more haggard than they already are (do we really need this many tight close-ups of these former matinée idols at this late stage in their careers?).Carla Gugino, John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg round out the movie's cast, but I doubt any of them will be highlighting "Righteous Kill" on their resumes when seeking future employment.
