Rocky 2 a Slow Sequel to Rocky

posted on 29 Jul 2009

Released in 1979, Rocky II picks up where the original "Rocky' leaves off, the movie beginning with the last round of the first fight with Apollo Creed. This second installment of the 6-part Rocky series is very slow to develop. The audience is made to wait the entire film to see the much-anticipated climax where Creed and Rocky square-off for their long-awaited rematch.

In essence, this film is a remake of the original "Rocky" movie, as it has all the same elements: Rocky courting (and this time marrying) Adrian, Rocky's passionate heart-felt love for Adrian, Rocky getting into fighting shape under the firey guidance of Mickey his trainer, and finally the epic fight against Creed. While the fight with Creed is exciting, the prelude leading up to the fight is at times tedious and overdrawn. So while the film is essentially another "Rocky", it fails to capture the audience's passion like the original.

Bill Conti, the musical genius of the original "Rocky", returns with much of the same upbeat inspiring music, adding a long "Vigil" piece, where Rocky is waiting and praying for his stricken wife, Adrian, to recover from a coma. (Adrian goes into premature labor, gives birth to a son, and lose so much blood, she falls into a deep coma). Conti's "Vigil" is a beautiful and haunting instrumental piece that depicts Rocky at Adrian's bedside, praying at the hospital Chapel, and waiting with trainer Mickey for Adrian to get better. While many viewers will find this tedious, and perhaps outright boring, I found it to be a further character insight into the man, Rocky Balboa. He is about to fight Apollo Creed for the heavyweight championship of the world, and yet, he is ready to give it all up because of his intense loyalty and love for Adrian. His manager, Mickey (played again by the cantankerous Burgess Meredith), begs him to train, but Rocky is so emotionally empty without Adrian, that he cannot possibly leave her side. Adrian finally revives, and Rocky tearfully and tenderly tells her, "I knew you'd come back to me." Despite its corniness, I still found it a touching tear-jerking scene. In gratitude for her revival, Rocky promises Adrian he will give up fighting forever if that will please her. Instead, Adrian tells the Rock the one thing she wants most of all: "Win, win!".

With Adrian behind him, Rocky eagery submits to Mickey's training regimen, and in a replay of the first film, Rocky returns to fighting shape while Conti's "Gonna Fly Now" plays in the background.

The fight with Creed is brutal, with Creed battering the outmatched Balboa. Despite taking a terrible beating, Rocky's indominable fighting spirit cannot be bent or broken, and he gets up off the mat repeatedly thoughout the fight. Going into the final 15th round, and far behind on points, Creed and Balboa touch gloves in the center of the ring, and Creed demands, "You're going down!". Rocky, unwavering, unbroken, and defiant, simply replys through broken and swollen lips, "No way".

The fight has a surprise ending that keeps fans wondering who will win up until the very last second, Exact details will not be revealed, but the insightful reader will realize there is a Rocky 3,4,5, and 6, and should be able to ascertain the ending.

Rocky II follows the formula of the original "Rocky", but with a less satisfying effect. It is certainly entertaining, but does not come close to the original offering. Thus, like most sequels, it falls short of the glory of the inspiring original. I still recommend it, but not nearly as highly as the 1976 award-winning "Rocky".

p.s. I took a girlfriend to see Rocky II in May of 1979 in Bemidji, Minnesota. It was our first date. I ended up marrying her in 1982, had 6 kids, and we have been together ever since. Like Rocky, I don't know what I would do without my "Adrian".

The rematch of the century!

`There is one thing I want you to do for me, win, win!' These are the words of Rocky's wife Adrian, recovering in hospital. Many movies have defining moments, with this part being no exception. Rocky II gives the audience a chance to see why Rocky Balboa is not just some street fighter, but a true champion. In some ways Rocky II is better than the original, which for me is hard to admit or write. After the controversial first challenge match in which spilt-decision awards the Heavy Weight title to defending champion, Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa officially retires from boxing. However the ‘Italian Stallion' finds it difficult to get work and coping with his new found notoriety. Apollo is also feeling the pressure as the calls for a rematch increase. Marriage to long time girlfriend, Adrian complicate matters, when she strongly objects to Rocky's return to the ring. He cannot turn away from the only life he has ever known and once again the training begins. When Adrian falls unexpectedly ill, it seems Rocky has lost the will to fight. Upon her recovery, she asks one thing of her husband – that he win. Spurred on by this and with help by Mickey, his trainer and Adrian's brother, Paulie, Rocky gets back into shape and once more enters the ring for the fight of his life a second time! This movie is a great follow up to the original. The cast, which for Rocky II has not changed that much, do it all again. Sylvester Stallone has now taken another added pressure, to just writing the story and starring as the `Italian Stallion', he now directs the film, which is a great effort. I felt the character of Rocky in this film was interesting, as we get to see the side to him that I am sure audiences would have been scared to see, that he is losing that desire to fight. However after the words from his love and most important person in his life, Adrian, he gets the only encouragement he needs. Taking on another aspect of this movie, did in no way, hamper the role of Rocky by Stallone. In fact I believe it improved it.The other cast members were also great. Telia Shire, was magnificent as the faithful wife of our champion, and again proves what a relationship is all about. Then you have the arrogant, but honest trainer Mickey, who tells Rocky to shape up or ship out as there is no room for any doubts. I love his role and perhaps that is the reason why I can say this set of sequels remains of mine favourite today. Rocky's angry opponent, Apollo Creed, is once again portrayed by the wonderful Carl Weathers. He means business this time, and for fans of this film it makes a much better film, as some of the fans of boxing question that the last win by Creed is fake, making him want a rematch, to prove he is a champion. This story was a good follow up to the first film, showing Rocky to be a struggler, was an ingenious piece of writing on Stallone's behalf. He tries to be something else other than a fighter, yet in the end, everything points to Rocky being what he always wants and in some way has to be. In addition to having the rematch with Apollo Creed, making it all the more interesting.I want to take a moment to reflect on what a brutal sport that boxing is. I mean we know what damage a boxer can do to himself, with head injuries being something they have to live and face once they step out of the ring. In Rocky II, the doctor has ‘recommended' that Balboa stay away from professional fighting, yet Rocky and I am sure real fighters ignore medical advice and take the ring, when in all seriousness that is the worst thing that they could be doing. The finale to this review, I would like to say that to make a good man, he needs a good woman, and a good friend told me that. Women can bring out in men, something that changes them. Although I am currently single, if l am to find a great girl, I would like them to bring out the best in me. That is what Rocky and Adrian do for each other and in some way it makes me want to find a ‘special' person, that I can call mine. Nevermind about the fight, Rocky is already a hero in my corner of the ring. Go the ‘Italian Stallion'Rating: 4 Stars or 9/10

Makes you want to go the distance and hit someone :D

Rocky II is the second installment in the Rocky series. One of my friends told me that I have to see the Rocky movies because they are very good and every movie fan should just see them. I'm also just interested in seeing what the hype was about. I actually was very surprised on how much I enjoyed the first Rocky. It had entertainment and was very inspirational.Rocky II dove a little more into what Rocky himself is all about. Obviously, from the first Rocky movie, he was just a punk off the streets who just got "lucky" according to Apollo, his competitor. In Rocky II, he and Apollo decide they want a rematch to see who is the real winner and fighter of the world since it was a draw match from the first Rocky. Also, Rocky marries Adrien and has a son with her. I did enjoy Rocky II, and I'm very much looking forward to the third one. I heard Mr. T is the star! :D 9/10

Some Weak Spots, but still one of the better in the series

Rocky II was the much anticipated sequel to one of the greatest movies of all-time - "Rocky". It continues the story of local Philadelphia Club Fighter Rocky Balboa as he makes a second improbable attempt to capture the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship. The nice thing about this story is it basically picks up where the original movie left off. It has all of the same charm of the main characters as well as with some of the lesser characters. However, it does have some fundamental pitfalls and as a result it does make this sequel fall short of the original classic.

This may be a bit of a spoiler: Rocky II picks up following Rocky's controversial split decision loss to Apollo Creed. Many people felt that Rocky should have won the fight. As part of his commitment for his love to Adrian, Rocky decides to retire from the ring. Rocky marries Adrian and plans to set in for a life of living of endorsements and commercials of his name. In short time, Rocky realizes he cannot handle the world of endorsements and commercials (Rocky cannot read). Meanwhile, Adrian becomes pregnant and the bills start to mount up. With public and financial pressures, Rocky agrees to a rematch with Apollo. Rocky's head just isn't into the fight - especially when Adrian goes into a coma following the baby's premature birth. Eventually Adrian recovers and encourages Rocky to win. The movie ends with Apollo and Rocky's classic rematch - and the outcome is very predictable.

One thing that flaws this movie immediately is the predictable outcome. One thing that made Rocky I such a great movie was that Rocky lost the fight. Even though Rocky lost the fight, he had accomplished his goal of going the distance and found love with Adrian. With a rematch as a theme for this movie, it makes the outcome much more predictable - and you can guess what happens at the end of this movie.

Another problem is that Rocky II has a tough act to follow in terms of the ending. The ending of Rocky I has to be considered one of the greatest in movie history. Who can forget the 14th round in Rocky I? And the scene where Rocky is calling "Adrian" as the Ring Announcer is announcing the decision is as emotional as it gets. Rocky II makes some mistakes right off the bat. For starters, Paulie and Adrian are not at ringside for this fight. Rocky leaves Paulie "in charge" at home because Adrian is still recovering from her hospital stay. I thought the dynamics of Paulie and Adrian in Rocky I in the Spectrum were spectacular: The part where Paulie lifts the ring rope to let Adrian in the ring is classic. While I understand that you can't repeat that for Rocky II, I still would have found a way to bring Paulie and Adrian to the arena. When I first saw this movie, I was waiting for Adrian to leave the house and go to the arena - it never happens. In terms of the Boxing the Choreography is much weaker than the first movie. The boxing sequences in the rematch in Rocky II seem less realistic than the sequences in Rocky I. They use a "double knockout" to end the fight - to me that seems like a page out of a Wrestling Pay Per View than a realistic fight.

Another thing that drags this movie out is the part with Adrian in the hospital. While I understand it was central to the storyline, it was way too drawn out.

The charm of all of the characters is still there. Rocky is still very much a street-wise character. Adrian - still shy is showing some signs of coming out of his shell. Paulie is still the same classic character that he was in Rocky I. I do think Apollo and Mickey's characters - while good, did lose a little bit of an edge. One character who I was a fan of was mob-boss Tony Gazzo (played by Joe Spinell) - he is back. Although Rocky isn't in the loan shark business, Gazzo still considers him a friend. When Gazzo's character was written out of the remaining Rocky movies, it definitely lost something. I was disappointed to see the omission of the characters of Mike (Mickey's right hand man), Gazzo's Limo Driver, and Jergens the Fight Promoter (the actor Thayer David did pass away before the sequel).

One character that I do like is the role of the Director played by John Pleshette. Pleshette has a real knack for playing compulsive neurotics (i.e. Richard Avery on "Knots Landing") and in Rocky II he basically plays that type of character. Although his part is short, he does a great job.

Rocky II will take place on the Streets of Philadelphia - and that is good. I do think the "Rocky Run" is far superior in Rocky II than in Rocky I - particularly when all of the kids join Rocky on his run. "Gonna Fly Now" is once again the music for the "Rocky Run".

The music is also up to the same standards of Rocky. Bill Conti is once again the driving force behind the music. Probably the most forgotten Bill Conti track in all of the Rocky movies is the theme from Rocky II called "Redemption". This is a powerful tune that really is used well in the beginning and closing credits of the movie.

Despite some of the shortcomings, this movie is still a very good movie. It still preserves much of the charm and flavor of the first movie - and it will keep you interested until the very end. There are also plenty of memorable quotes and one-liners that you will want to play over and over again. Following this movie, Stallone would change the formula for "Rocky" movies making it difficult to capture the magic of the first two.

Doesn't pack the same punch as the original

For me, the part where Rocky II failed were the Adrian scenes. I loved the new developments in Adrian and Rocky's relationship, through the not-so-romantic proposal (my heart still melted though) to their son being born (more about him later.)

I won't ruin the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but there's a whole chunk of the movie where Adrian doesn't do anything. Therefore, Rocky doesn't do anything. The whole sequence was overly long, and could have been cut down a bit.

Rocky II follows straight on from the first one. With an overly long flashback to the end fight of the last one. Which may work if you haven't seen the first one in a while, and be needing of a gentle reminder, but I saw these a week apart!

There's nothing different between this an the original, Rocky & Apollo Creed are fighting again, we've met all the characters already, and Adrian & Rocky's relationship develops quickly. Adrian gives birth to a gorgeous baby boy, with a head of black hair, which instantly made my womb (that is on the list!) skip a beat. He is so gorgeous! It's pretty much an uplifting story, with Rocky going through a character arc, and struggling with what happens in the weeks/months after the fight. He goes on a small shopping spree, fast cars, nice coat for the wife, nice coat for himself and a luxury apartment that they can't really afford. But the money doesn't last long - not with the rate he spent it - and he finds himself running broke, and itching to fight again.

So far, I've seen Rocky I, II, III, IV (the latter of which I nearly forgot about!) and Rocky Balboa. This is definitely the weakest in my opinion. But mainly because of the scenes with Adrian. Otherwise it's good fun.

I liked it a lot

Rocky 2 is a really good movie however I honestly don't think its a necessary movie. The only real difference between this movie and the original is that Rocky wins in this one. I wanted Rocky to win in the first one like every underdog movie but the point of the first one was for him to go the distance. This movie is the ending that I would have liked for Rocky I but I honestly don't think there needed to be a movie just for that. I enjoyed Rocky 2 and its a good sequel but I don't think the movies necessary and its not necessary in the Rocky time line. I've seen worst Sports Movies and I've seen better Sports Movies. The movie also deals with how Rocky would seem if he was rich which is entertaining and interesting.

Rocky beats him

Rocky II continues the story of Rocky Balboa. It stays pretty much like it was in the first one. Nobody really looks different or anything. This film deals with some different issues like how Rocky spends his money and fame and how Apollo deals with his victory. Rocky seems to not understand show biz in this one. The final fight was big time suspenseful, as in early in the series you did not know if Rocky would win or not. The plot about Adrians coma hurts the pacing and Apollos journey is rather one- note, but it gets you where you need to be in this movie. Mickey sure did scream a lot in this movie. Rocky II is not as good as the first and I feel there was something missing in this one so there went one star. Buy it if you are a real Rocky fan like myself. God bless you and have a great day.

A Rocky "Must Have"

I love Rocky and all the films in the Rocky series. Many people forget that Rocky did not win in the first film. He prayed to be able to go the distance, and he got what he prayed for--he withstood. Rocky II shows more of the personal side of Rocky and his relationships with those close to him. He is more vulnerable in this film. This is a must for those die-hard Rocky fans like me!

My personal favorite Rocky film

Sly makes a comeback as Rocky Balboa in the hit sequel to the classic boxing film Rocky. It is really powerful in love and it shows how much anger can push a guy over the edge. I felt a moment of joy when Adrian told Rocky to do one thing, win! Micky's line made me laugh afterward. This is the best Rocky film out of the whole bunch. Apollo is back wanting a rematch and Rocky is starting to get a better life while spending all his match money. Sly directed this film with spunk and it made a great formula for Rocky, the best! If you loved the original, you'll love this one! The best in the series, the king of the saga. Go out and get Rocky II, a big 9. You'll love it, enjoy!

My Favourite of the series, only marginally more so than the original as the humour is increased, but not so much that it becomes embarrassing. Rocky, although now a celebrity in Philadelphia sees his life become increasingly difficult. He is struggling with money after marrying Adrian and hearing she is pregnant. The only solution it seems is a rematch with Creed, but he risks losing his sight and family. Again, every performance is good, but it is the banter involving Rocky and his knowledge of finance, and how to cope with being a B-list celebrity which makes the movie most effective. Rocky is taken advantage of, everyone takes cheap shots at him until he realises not only must he fight Creed again, but win to prove he is not simply a fluke, a one day name, and gain respect. 9 out of 10.

Very good sequel

Rocky II picks up where the first Rocky left off. People begin to accuse Apollo of fixing the fight and of being a disgrace to the profession, prompting him to challenge Rocky to a rematch. Meanwhile, Rocky has retired from boxing. He marries Adrian and has a son, but he's having trouble finding a job. Pretty soon it becomes apparent that the only way he can support his family is if he goes back to boxing, so he accepts Creed's challenge and begins training to become the heavyweight champion of the world. Rocky II stays true to the feel of the first film, making it one of the better sequels.Rocky is the single best underdog story ever captured on film, and it was a huge success, and seeing as Rocky lost by split decision at the end of the first film, it was a good idea to make a sequel. Sylvester Stallone wrote and directed this movie, and he made it a lot like the first film, with some added stuff. However, there seemed to be a little of the finesse of the first film missing. It didn't have exactly the same feel. I think it was that the fight wasn't that important in the first film but this movie is all about the fight. This movie is the last good drama in the series before it turned into an action series with the 3rd installment. All of the actors from the first film return to their roles, and everyone does just as good, although Rocky comes across as vastly uneducated in some scenes whereas he seemed to at least have a high school diploma in the first film. This movie is very similar to the first film with what many people would call a more common and likely ending.7.5/10

A movie better than the original Rocky, this truly a great movie. After his bout with Apollo Creed, Rocky is rushed to the hospital. He suffers massive injuries and decides to retire. He marries Adrian and settles down. But Apollo Creed's manager needs to prove that Rocky was just lucky. Finally Rocky is drawn once again into the ring against Apollo Creed. END

To be the best...

This time Rocky Balboa(Sylvester Stallone) prepares for a rematch that a critically embarrassed Apollo Creed(Carl Weathers) wants to prove that was sheer beginners luck rather than pure skill, so once again Stallone prepares to do battle by training in Philadelphia and this time Rocky is about to be father as he is now married to his beloved Adrian. Rocky II works the same way one of those Jean-Claude Van Damme tournament movies work, it's appeal is spread over the training montage and of course in the fight sequence itself. Rocky II does have some appeal still in the characters but the first one was far more interesting in this approach and although the characters are still fresh the main reason Rocky II is enjoyable is mainly due to the reasons I mention. Once again though there is still enough magic to satisfy fans of this series and it is a formula that one quite enjoys.* *1/2 out of 4-(Pretty good)

CLASSIC!!

posted on 21 Nov 2008

One of the best movies I have seen. Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) is provoked by Apollo Creed for a re-match as he wants to show the world that Rocky's heroics in the first movie were just a fluke. Rocky's wife doesn't want Rocky to continue fighting and slips into coma while delivering birth to their child. When she comes out of coma, things change and a new chapter in boxing is written. Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa is amazing, be his interview comments before the re-match or the frustration that builds up in him when his wife is unhappy with the prospect of his entering the ring again. The fight is exciting, adrenalin pumping and highly action packed. The supporting cast is excellent, Rocky's wife, his brother-in-law and Mickey, Rocky's coach. The dialogues are classic, the story is engrossing and direction is good. This is a must watch for all those who want to watch an action movie with a difference. It is a never forgetting experience.

The Greatest Champ of All Time

Wow, what a time to remember, everything was so different in those days...the days of the greatest underdog of all time; "The Italian Stallion" Rocky Balboa....The story you know it already, this is the redemption of the true champ that emerged that night at Philadelphia...finally The Stallion embraced what was already his.

The picture is spectacular, the color, photography, everything is so refreshed even the dialogue; definitely one of history's all time great boxing movies.

Get it and relive the dream of an already american icon.

Awesome sequel

I watched Rocky II for the first time a few weeks ago, and this film was better than the first one. While most sequels are poorly done and in general are horrible, this one was very good. After the fight with Apollo, Rocky decides to retire, and he marries Adrian. When the fans think that the Rocky and Apollo fight is fixed, Apollo decides for him and Rocky to fight again.Rocky tries to support his family by taking regular jobs, but loses his job when they cut back production. The fight scenes were awesome, and there is a lot of good dialog in the film that makes it a good film to watch. The Rocky series is good and if you have watched the first one, watch this as you will not be disappointed.

Second best sequel ever!! Need i name the best??

Stallone caught grease lightning in a bottle twice!!! This had the same feeling and vibe as the first..yet it was different. How this movie hasn't been tagged as the second best sequel ever is mind boggling..need i name the best?? Once again the script was stunning. Every word is real, honest, and heart felt. There are a lot of movies that try to be tear jerkers and try to be the feel good movie...i really believe that was never Stallone's intention, it just naturally happened. Both endings in Rocky 1 & 2 have been the only movies in my entire life that have made me cry..ya that's right cry!! I watched it again last night and once again tears. It's really unbelievable!! It's a real shame that this movie doesn't have a better rating. Anyways if you have a chance watch the movie again...maybe you'll see what i mean. His lungs i'm gonna punch out!!

Inspite of flaws,as inspiring as they come!

What can one say about Stallone? A guilty pleasure he is, for one.And his movies as well.I think its become fashionable to trash him and the movies he makes. Lets not forget, the genre he tackles is emotional, action packed entertaining blockbusters and not some mind twister which is going to be some cult classic. Rocky 2 falls in the sphere of an entertaining, action movie with dollops of emotion that will endure through the ages. Why? Coz it carried the saga forward in a logical manner. It takes the story forward and throws light upon the character's development. How Rocky still thinks like a street fighter when in fact he is fighting for the biggest prize-- the heavyweight championship. The fact that it takes time for this to sink in shows that Rocky SLOWLY builds up momentum and takes off; just as he does in his training run.Stallone may be one of the most humane and underrated talented Hollywood stars ever. Has any other major A list star ever managed to create such a wonderful and inspiring character? He did 2- Rocky and Rambo. But Rocky will go down in history as one of the most loved, inspiring and unique characters in movie history.Rocky 2 tells us how he manages to conquer the world and kill his demons once and for all. It is not just Rocky's story, but our story as well.We all have a little bit of Rocky in us. And it is stories like these that inspire all of us to be better men. The message of this movie in my opinion is that the 3 things most worth fighting for are- family, love and self respect. Rocky is the man we all can be; if we just try a little harder and have a deep faith in whatever keeps us alive.

The classic second Sequel

The second part of Rocky falls in originality because you know exactly what will happen.Rocky, who wants the retire, gets a new opportunity to fight against Apollo Creed, but he is not as good as the past to fighting with him so he begins to train with his all life coach (Great Role by Burgess Meredith)and the final of the film you can imagine it and probably you are right.Rocky II is a film for watching but if you have better things to do or to watch look at another film.

Excellent sequel

"Rocky II" is one of those sequels that is just as good as the original, if not better in
some aspects. I can't say it's better than the original because you can't have the second
film without the first one. Meaning that this film does not stand on it's own, you need
the first film to understand the characters and back-stories of everything in this film.
But all in all, I think "Rocky II" is slightly more enjoyable than the original "Rocky".In all honesty, I think this film is better directed than the first film.
The story seems to
flow quite nicely and is slightly faster paced than the original. Not only that, but the
main fight in the film is much more exciting and longer. The acting in "Rocky II" is better as well, or at least I thought so.
Sylvester Stallone does
a fantastic job with his role of Rocky Balboa and really struts his stuff here. Talia Shire
and Burt Young also pull off nice performances. Carl Weathers plays the character of
Apollo Creed to a "T". And of course, Burgess Meredith does a fantastic job as Mickey. This is one of those sequels that truly has the same feel as the original.
Granted, it isn't
as fresh as the original...but it's a re-match that can't be missed. If you liked the
original "Rocky", then you definitely ought to check this one out, I don't think you'll be
disappointed. I hope you like the film as much as I do. Thanks for reading,-LebowskiT1000
