Johnny take off your glasses or get a new director
posted on 21 Aug 2009I do like Johnny Depp and most of his films, unfortunately this is his worst effort to date (even his short part in the first 'Nightmare On Elm Street' film is better than this). The director was messy and in a hurry while making this film. Why do I think this? I'll tell you why. All throughout the film, you can see the camera lights reflected in Johnny's glasses. Look for the green box in his glasses. When I see this, I wonder how a director can be so clumsy, it is as if he doesn't care about his work. And it doesn't happen once, it happens through the entire film!!
Now as for the acting. Johnny looks as if he decided to dress up as a writer for Halloween. It looks like a bad high school costume. He is suppose to be a writer and walks around with an Einstein hair-do and a beaten up bathrobe. His acting as a writer is even worse. He sits with his legs crossed while polishing his glasses and his head cocked. Give me a break!!
This is suppose to be a thriller. But I had my hand over my mouth trying to stifle my laughter. This movie is hilarious. The scene where he confronts his stalker by the truck which contains his 2 dead friends is beyond ludicrous.
The ending will have you rolling your eyes. As Johnny sits eating his corn on the cob, which is suppose to be a metaphor. I just cannot believe how bad this film is. Watch if you want to laugh...
King corn
posted on 17 Aug 2009"Secret Window" must be the umpteenth movie adapted from a Stephen King story, and it's not one of the most successful. I haven't read all of King's works -- evidently they constitite a small-town library -- but the ones I've read reveal a mild talent for the Gothic genre. (Interestingly, one of the best, "Gerald's Game", has not been filmed, perhaps because its claustrophobic variations on a theme would not appeal to adolescents.) "Secret Window" has Johnny Depp as a burned-out author going through an unusually recriminatory divorce. Depp, fresh from playing Captain Queen in "Pirates of the Caribbean", goes in the opposite direction here: badly in need of strong coffee, hair a rat's nest, tattered bathrobe, thick eyeglasses clamped to his face. Depp takes chances, you gotta give him credit. His character has moved into an upstate New York country house, isolated and in more need of repairs than Depp himself. He's immediately confronted by a strange character out of "Deliverance" (John Turturro) accusing the author of plagiarism. Now, in real life, with today's high-tech communications, such a vague accusation could be resolved in hours. But this is not real life, it's Stephen King, so the situation drags on and on, becoming increasingly nasty. Director David Koepp works with the idea that if you're manipulative enough the audience will not notice the incompetence in the plot's construction. And the manipulation is shameless, not to mention predictable. Scene after sloppy scene is just too obvious to be scary. As for the ending: well, I'm not going to give away the secret of "Secret Window". Let's just say that Margaret Millar did it a lot better in "Beast in View", and that was nearly 50 years ago.
Succeeds besides the fact that you can guess the secret 10 minutes in
posted on 16 Aug 2009Far too predictable, using a gimmick that has in the past five years or so become as cliché as `it was all just a dream', but Secret Window succeeds despite that. Not that it succeeds much, but it does entertain for a little more than 90 minutes. Johnny Depp gives a fantastic performance as an author struggling with a separation from his wife, as well as with threats from a stranger (John Turturro), a Mississippi farmer who claims that Depp stole his story. Depp is really the main source of entertainment; this may be his best performance yet and, while he won't follow up his well deserved Oscar nomination from last year, he does deserve it. The film was released too early in 2004, and is itself rather forgettable. But Depp is great, playing things half comic, half serious. And the whole film has a sly humor to it that's just irresistible. 7/10.
Open the Window and Let Some Fresh Air In!
posted on 14 Aug 2009Adapted from a short Stephen King work, Secret Window has lots of potential to be a spellbinding, suspenseful thriller about a man living in the woods trying to overcome his misery of finding his wife and a lover in a cheap motel. He is soon visited by a man that says he stole his story. What a letdown! The story became painfully obvious very soon and still made no sense. I could go into details but that might spoil(though I hardly think so) what is to follow. Johnny Depp gives a valiant effort with the material at hand, but the script just doesn't muster enough steam to make it credible at all nor exciting. John Tuturro gives a decent performance as the mysterious man from Mississippi. The direction is rather choppy trying to cram as many red herrings for the viewer as possible. Though made with a decent budget and by no means a poor film, Secret Window just is fair at best.
I've seen the movie, but where can I find the novella?
posted on 12 Aug 2009My mother has read Cujo twice. Me? I've never even touched a Stephen King book. Thankfully, my lazy self doesn't have to read a book to read a spine-chilling Stephen King novel thanks to Johnny Depp.Secret Window is based on the novella by Stephen King (Secret Window, Secret Garden). The main character is a troubled man by the name of Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp) who is in the "middle of a divorce; D-I-V-O-R-C-E DIVORCE!" as he calls it with his wife Amy (she had an affair with another guy). After being alone in his lakeside cabin doing nothing but eat Doritos and lay on the couch for 6 months, a stranger by the name of John Shooter (John Turruro (I don't know if I spelled that write)), who claims that Mort stole his story. After a while, Shooter commits the same crimes that are in Mort's novel, Secret Window. The acting in this movie is great; Depp does a great job at being that lonely, creepy, my-life-is-pointless-because-my-wife-cheated-on-me kind of guy while Turruro plays a great job as being that murderous hillbilly. So what's the problem? Most of the movie is basically spent on conversations. If you ask me, that isn't a good idea for a movie and just doesn't put chills down your spine like Halloween IV and V.If you need to see a Johnny Depp horror, then this is a great movie for you to see. If you aren't a Johnny Depp fan (or just think he actually DOES think of America as a broken toy), see this movie anyway. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
Twenty years ago...
posted on 10 Aug 2009...this movie would have been new, groundbreaking, original ,you name it.In 2006,this kind of plot where things-are-not-what-they seem has been used again and again and again.I will not mention any other works because I do not want to write a spoiler ,but thriller buffs know what I mean.John Turturro has ,for instance,an underwritten part: every time he turns up,he has got almost the same lines to say.The same goes for Timothy Hutton's non-romantic new love of Depp's ex-wife.Johnny Depp is certainly one of the more gifted actors of his generation, but he needs a director.David Koepp makes me think of a poor man's Roman Polanski.Ellery Queen's mystery magazine is mentioned in the movie:why don't the script writers forget a bit Stephen King and think of that great writer (Ellery Queen) who wrote absorbing novels?
Another must see movie by Johnny Depp
posted on 28 Jul 2009When I went to see "Secret Window" I thought, what have I got myself in to? I don't like horror flicks, however, this movie was a thriller and contained a suprise ending that you would not figure out. Another Johnny Depp great. A must to ad to my movie collection.
Definitely spoilers in this one!
posted on 25 Jul 2009My first gripe is that on the DVD the deleted scenes were so good, I am irritated they edited them from the movie in the first place.....particularly the ending. "Secret Window/Secret Garden" is the short story this movie is based on that you will find in the book "Four Past Midnight." What I found interesting is that the story was a spin off of the King novel "The Dark Half" and the author's note before the story is well worth reading for some background information into the window concept. Stephen King's books rarely translate well into film. This movie was no exception, it was quite predictable.
It's simple to predict off the bat what the deal is here with Depp's character. What saves this movie from disaster is the fact that Johnny Depp can lend his own brand of eccentrics to the character, and make his quirks and idiosyncrisies pure entertainment. He delivers, and does not disappoint! It's all about that fine line between fiction and reality, which only writers of fiction should know about.....this time, the revelation was shared with the unsuspecting public.....when in doubt, shooter!
If you want to see the greatest actor ever, you have to watch him do what he chooses to do. Right now, that's Secret Window.
posted on 19 Jul 2009Johnny Depp is Johnny Depp. You have to admire an actor who chooses what he does by what is interesting to him instead of what just makes money. I love Johnny Depp and I thought the movie was worth it. I would rather see him in something like Pirates or Benny and Joon, but I'll take what I can get. That said, why do people think that a movie isn't good just because it isn't scary enough. I was on the edge of my seat from the time the windshield wiper noise started before the movie had even started. Is that not intense? I'll admit I don't usually see scary movies. Whoever thought Once Upon a Time in Mexico was better than Secret Window has got to be sick. I've never seen so much blood and gore and senseless killing in my life. What I liked about Secret Window was the funny parts = "I'd be lying if I didn't say I was on the verge of doing Snoopy dances" and "I'm in trouble". Too funny for words.I also enjoy seeing parts of other movies from Johnny's past. Watch him walk around with the paddle = "you're supposed to be dead - am I not?" and when he picks up the fireplace poker = "who makes all these? - I do and I practice with them three hours a day" and when he falls over the cliff (off the sofa) into the ocean. Didn't anyone else see the connections? If you like Johnny Depp, see this. If you like scary movies, go find a shrink. If you're a writer and just like to pick apart movies, I feel sorry for you. It's too bad you can't enjoy a movie for what it is - entertainment.
I know this because John Shooter knows this.
posted on 17 Jul 2009A lot of things are required for a good film. A good script (with well crafted dialogue as well as an interesting plot), a quality cast, the chemistry of the cast, and a director who can work well with all of that. All of those things combined can make a truly great movie.Movies, however, do not need all of those to be entertaining. In fact, really, as I discovered last nght, a movie can get by with just part of a great cast. For instance, Johnny Depp can make a movie just about all by himself. In this particular instance, he was not all by his lonesome, and alongside John Turturro, there was suitable entertainment to be had.I won't lie. The movie is unexciting. It's intended to be a suspenseful , and exciting. But, mostly, its neither. So, yeah, as my friend Dennis said to me while leaving the theatre, "Lewis, if you are ever in Hollywood, with a crappy script, and you need to salvage your movie, you know what to do: Hire Johnny Depp."And this film is a case in point. Johnny Depp plays Captain John Sparrow without the pirate, but with the crazy mannerisms and odd style of speech. In this incarnation, he is a writer, who is in the process of a divorce, and with a bit of a stalker who claims that Johnny stole his story. The plot is unexciting, uneventful, and annoyingly predictable. The dialogue switches from boring and stilted to hilarious, but the hilarious lines are all Depp's, and I suspect that they were ad libs.See, I could tell you all of the problems with the film, but to be fair, I rather enjoyed it. Not because it was good, but just because Depp and Turturro are fun to watch. Outside of that, the movie is not noteworthy, and uninventive. The important thing is, though, unlike so many other films, I don't regret going to see this, and recommend that people go see it, as long as they know, it's all about the acting.
Slow, Boring and unrealistic
posted on 15 Jul 2009This movie is slow, unrealistic and most of all BORING !!! This has to be one of the 10 WORST movies I've ever seen in my life. Johnny Depp's character is so unlikeable, that after just 30 minutes I had grown tired of it. There are no sympathetic characters in this movie. With the exception of the Sheriff, all the characters are cold, and downright nasty. In addition, I was offended by the fact that the writers of the movie went out of their way to hide the fact that part of the movie is set in what is supposed to be an area of the Bronx known as Riverdale. They would not even acknowledge that Riverdale, NY is policed by the NYPD. Instead the detective from Riverdale, identifies himself as a member of the Riverdale police department... No such thing. I guess we couldn't be allowed to think that Johnny Depp could ever live in the Bronx. And what was with his weird accent??? This movie is a must NOT see !!!
"Fight Club" anyone?
posted on 13 Jul 2009-A mysterious southern man that wears a goofy hat accuses a writer of ripping him off and tells the writer to retract his story or else there will be trouble. The writer insists that he didn't steal anything from the southern man and gives him prove but the man not being content begins to get more aggressive and even hostile as he kills people in front of our innocent writer but like every crappy movie there's a twist towards the end that attempts to save the movie but a twist no matter how good can't save a movie that can't hold an interest -If this movie had come out before "Fight Club" then maybe the crappy ending would have been something special but as it stands this movie as the same twist as "Fight Club" but also at the same time not no where as enjoyable or as good as that classic Fincher tale was. But to be fair the story was written way before that movie but still the similarities are undeniable. The acting by Depp is one of the worst I've seen in very long time. He basically does nothing but make weird dog noises and just spends the rest of movie being as shocked as i was at how terrible this movie was. I'm sure there are two or three people that found the dog sounds and overacting intriguing but I didn't. The gorgeous Maria Bello is the decent quality of the movie and it's really a shame that she doesn't get more screen time because the little that she has is great to watch. John Turturro does his best stereotypical southern accent in this but nothing that will make you think he steals the movie. Movies based on Stephen King novels have seen better light under Darabont's direction and I was hoping this movie would do the same but I guess I was asking for too much when I wanted a great movie. Not only did I not get a great movie but didn't even get a decent one -I love David Koepp and along with Charlie Kaufman and PTA is one of my favorite writers but one can't really blame him for this movie with a twist that fails to make you drop your jaw like it wants you to do
Great performances in a bad movie
posted on 11 Jul 2009I'm always skeptical when I hear of yet another Stephen King story being made into a movie. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy King's writing...but movie adaptations of his works don't exactly have a great track record. But, this time around I was optimistic because of the talent involved. And that talent didn't let me down. John Turturro is a consistently good actor who gives a consistently good performance. And Johhny Depp once again shows us how he can take any character and make it his own. He is able to instill his roles with incredibly entertaining personalities while still making them believable. I would almost recommend this movie solely for the enjoyment of watching Depp perform. The problem is that no amount of great acting could save this movie. It's predictable, drawn out, and plain silly at times. And for some reason, it ends about 15 minute too late. After the final climatic scene, there is a completely unnecessary wrap-up scene that I guess answers one or two questions. But they are questions the viewer doesn't really want/need answered and it doesn't answer them in a very satisfactory manner anyway. Cutting off that last scene wouldn't help this movie...but it sure couldn't hurt. So, if you're like me and will watch Depp in almost anything, check this out to admire his skills. Just don't expect a good movie.
Adaptation
posted on 04 Jul 2009In general, the movie was great. The acting and casting was near perfect, however, anyone who has seen adaptation can't help but notice how many "rules" are broken (i.e. lots of voice over when it wasn't really needed). It was worth seeing, though the plot was not the strongest, and the ending was somewhat predictable. Johnny Depp was his normal wonderful self, and assumed the role completely. He wasn't the only great actor, the cast as a whole was strong. It had its funny moments, its suspense and its gruesome times. They were balanced very well. All in all, it was a good movie, but not the best.
johnny depp saves this movie
posted on 02 Jul 2009*spoiler* Secret window is part of a great movie, the only thing missing is a better ending. That doesnt sound fair to the movie,I do like it but something doesnt feel right near the end.It has the same problem "identity" has,no way you can figure whats happening until they spell it out for you.it feels forced on you.I still recommend it.
Wino Forever
posted on 01 Jul 2009Spoilers herein.According to current thinking, there are only 14 ways to fold a story inside out. Three of
them seem too hard, at least I have never heard of anyone trying. King sticks pretty close
to only two methods, but his genius is that he blurs the mechanics so that you suspect
through the story it may be one of the more interesting methods. That shows here. The original, ambiguous King ending is kept: Mort is crazy you see. But
thankfully writer/director Koepp takes things in the interim far beyond what King does -
what he is capable of.The first scene establishes that Mort has multiple selves and experiences a trauma.
That's King. Then we start the movie proper and Koepp takes over. We have the by now
ordinary shot over water up to a house and in the window, then we go down the stair
partway. The stairways shot is directly out of `Psycho' and in fact that starting sequence
of zooming through the window to a bed was used to begin the `remake.'Then dear friends we go directly into a mirror where the entire film takes place. In fact we
see the reversal later in that same mirror when Mort sees only the back of his head.
That's how a mirror would work in a reverse world, reverse. So what's the folding? The ninth type, in fact the exact type Depp participated in with
`The Ninth Gate:' the story that writes its characters. In this case, the story is the film
itself. The secret window is the mirror and so on.The question is: is the ending we see the original King ending that is `bad writing,' or is
it the ending you will worry about in your dreams tonight, the one that still has to be
written?Depp makes a specialty of folded acting to support folded projects, especially for Gilliam
and Burton. Watch him here as he gives you many layers of the fold without committing
- until that false end - to any of them.Koepp, by the way, wrote one of the most complex selfreferential films in history: `Snake
Eyes.' Check it out.Turtorro has been the reflected self in several projects. The ones that come to mind are
`Cradle will Rock,' `O Brother,' and `Illuminata.'Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.
Wow
posted on 27 Jun 2009I thought that this was one of the better Stephen King movies that I have seen. It takes awhile to build up the story in the beginning, but once it does, the ball rolls. True, it doesn't build up much suspense, but it is still a great movie. If you pay attention to the details, you will kinda know whats going to happen, but if you don't, you're in for a surprise! Johnny does a great job in this movie, he seems to be having fun. All the actors did a great job. The ending is the best that I have ever seen, it will leave you speechless (it did with me at least.)Have fun seeing the movie!
Another King adaptation gone horribly dull
posted on 26 Jun 2009I had high hopes for this movie. Then the words "Based on the Stephen King novel" came on during the opening credits and I knew I was in for something. Maybe other reviewers will have to forgive me, you see I've had bad experiences with "Storm of the Century," "The Langoliers," and the recent "Dreamcatcher," so maybe I'm being unfair...or maybe I just find myself let down by every single adaptation of a Stephen King novel I've ever seen.
As usual, the characters like to take the hardest path out of a difficult situation. Johnny Depp is a writer who is out in the forest living in a cabin trying to come up with a new story when a Mississippi hick comes up and says, "You copied my story!" Eventually Depp points out that his version was published two years before the hicks, but the hick wants proof - which Depp can easily supply via the original copy of the magazine the story was published in. Of course, that would be TOO easy. Instead Depp decides to take a few naps and procrastinate. To get some action out of our hero, the hick kills his dog.
Here is the only brief shining moment of intellegence in the movie: Depp is told by the hick not to tell the police...so he does! Yet there's a problem, (doh!) that being the local sheriff doesn't think a man going onto another man's property, grabbing his dog, and stabbing it to death with a screwdriver is a crime. And so for the rest of the movie its pretty much like "Storm of the Century" except "Give me what what I want and I'll go away" is replaced with "Show me the magazine!" This goes on and on...and instead of, you know, SHOWING him the freggin' magazine Johnny Depp just keeps digging himself deeper and deeper into trouble. Most of the time I'm left thinking, "What a MORON!"
Of course, things clear up near the ending. But at an incredibly slow pace. Indeed, this had to be one of the longest, most drawn out conclusions ever. The fact that I saw it coming an hour into the movie didn't help either - you don't believe me? The exact same thing was done in "The Usual Suspects," "A Beautiful Mind," and "Fight Club," they just combined them all together. Sad thing is, those great plot twists combined don't work with this particular movie. I thought it was going to be a good ending - you know the kind Depp was striving for in the story - but it was just a typical suspense/psychological/killer ending. Maybe Depp's character should have written the script.
Depp's acting in it really wasn't THAT great. He must have two expressions the whole time, and his voice is on constant stoner mode. Even when he impersonates the hick at the end he still sounds basically the same monotone voice, except with the southern accent. He was basically the same as I saw him in "The 9th Gate." Really, all in all this movie is a major letdown. If it received high critical acclaim, then its overrated, simple as that.

The Real Secret Is That This Is A Terrrible Movie!!!
posted on 27 Aug 2009This movie is loosely based on a Stephen King story and if King wrote it then they gotta film it which seems to be an "Unspoken Rule "in Hollywood. Johnny Depp (is that his real surname?) plays Mort Rainey , a writer who seems to spend most of his time in his pyjamas and sleeping on the couch. Then he is visited by a sinister stranger by the name of John Shooter. Just for once in my life I would like to see an actor playing a writer who does not wear a pair of Geek glasses so he can look more " Intellectual". I give this movie 5 stars because-
(a) I like Maria Bello
(b)Mort lives in a nice rustic house and
(c) The ending should appeal to very divorced guy's Revenge Fantasies whose wife has ever left him for another man.
