Not good, Sarah is only good thing
posted on 25 Jul 2009This movie dragged, was unoriginal, and was a huge let down for me. The only good thing about the movie was Sarah Michelle Gellar, and she is the reason why anyone that sees it does. I was dissapointed because so far Sarah has chosen all the best roles. This is a real bad movie, it copies off of every POOR GIRL FALLS FOR RICH BOY AND MAGIC MAKES THEM FALL IN LOVE movie that has ever come out: Cinderella, Mary Poppins. I hope Cruel Intentions is much better.
simply irresistible...
posted on 19 Jul 2009was just that for me...simply irresistible! i couldn't help myself...i am a sucker for romance combined with magic...mix in the overlay of the sublime, and add a dash of the ethereal and you have the ingredients for a sumptuous recipe. the cast was excellent, the settings of the southern cross and the tom restaurant/creation were colorful and mystical. everyone waiting with baited breath in anticipation of amandas awakening and inspiration (to meet or supersede her dearly departed mother's expectations)to explode into full blossom...magic that runs in the female lineage of the family at least. it was time to for tom to stop stalling and sabotaging a relationship destined to be divine. amanda was determined to follow her hearts desire with or without tom, but as we all know the dynamics of a divine couple (as in soulmates), loving in harmony, can have an exponential impact on the changes necessary to restore the love and the light to the universe! it was evident to me this was a love that truly was meant to transcend time!
It was a fairy tale romance with humor.
posted on 15 Jul 2009It was a fun movie that was meant to entertain. I have already seen twice and it was better the second time around. Sarah Michelle Gellar wears her heart on her sleeve. Her every emotion is felt with one look. Sean Patrick Flanery did a good job as obsessed with being in control of everything in his life, and most importantly, his emotions. Which of course, spins out of control after meeting Gellar. If your looking to just have fun, and be entertained, then this a must see!
the best dressed cook in New York
posted on 11 Jul 2009It's interesting to see Sarah Michelle Gellar play a character in a low-key fashion. I recently rented the campy (and hilarious) Cruel Intentions to see her give a performance so unbelievably over-the-top I couldn't stop laughing. Also, the less said about her role in I KNow What You Did Last Summer the better. Though impeccably shot sequences in and around New York give the film a glowing lusture, the script and the characters don't live up to the glow and seem to blend in with the scenery. It's supernatural themes seem to get left behind when there's a moment of pesky plot to spoil the visual pleasure, and I'm not convinced that anyone on screen wanted to be there at all. Also, why does a young woman on the verge of bankruptcy dress so well and have such impeccably styled hair? And why would she wear designer outfits whilst making sauces? It's odd. It seemed to be a Vogue photo essay in search of a Meg Ryan-esque romance.
Simply Bad
posted on 07 Jul 2009I do not wish to waste anymore of my time on this movie, but I feel compelled to warn people against this unbelievably bad movie. Some movies are so bad they are funny, this isn't one of them! This movie is so awful (the acting, the script, the direction, ect) that I honestly had the following thought while watching it, "Ed Wood would have been an asset to this film." How this movie was even made amazes me. To think that somewhere in Hollywood, someone actually bought "Hey, I have this story about a bad cook and a magical crab" is more hoffiying than having a dream that The Blair Witch Project happened to you.
Like Water for Buffy
posted on 04 Jul 2009The whole way through, I kept on thinking, this is sooo *Like Water for Chocolate*, a far better tale of the magic of cooking. There is one scene almost IDENTICAL (a tear in the food causes everyone to cry). I thought about whether it was a homage or a rip-off, and decided it was a rip-off. That movie used magic realism; this one simply uses magic. And not that the magic makes any sense. Where'd it come from? Who knows? There's this cute wittle crab that serves no purpose. The romance is contrived and rather unoriginal. It doesn't offer too much in the way of entertainment. At least by the end of the movie, I had stopped seeing Sarah Michelle Gellar solely as Buffy (she is very Buffylike in the beginning). There is also a very sweet camera shot involving lots of mirrors that is the best shot in the entire movie. Overall, a mediocre movie that doesn't ever rise above...anything. Well, except the floor, in a couple scenes involving that "magic."
Are you kidding me?
posted on 24 Jun 2009Wow, I read some reviews of this movie that made it sound good. "That cute little crab". This movie was as hokey as Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space". You could actually see the string on the so-called "magic crab" I think I owned a bath toy that looked just like that crab when I was 8. It was only a notch above "Bats" on the worst movies I have seen list. The plot was awful, the acting wasn't very even (although SPF did look good in those suits) and the direction was spotty. I just didn't like it. It was one of those "so bad its really bad movies".
Simply Irresistible is Simply Crap
posted on 22 Jun 2009This movie is not only a ripoff but totally and completely confusing. How does SMG's cooking suddenly get better anyways? That makes absolutely no sense. They should explain that part some more. Other than that, it's downright boring and somewhat sappy. The only highlight is that they have good music.
I consider this movie a guilty pleasure
posted on 06 Jun 2009If you cut away all the sillines and take a small vacation from reality, at heart this was a cute little love story. However, I could not get past the lack of plot. There was really no explanation of the fog and floating except for a magical crab. I was also disappointed in Ms. Gellar's wardrobe. On the other hand, I enjoyed Patricia Clarkson's performance and the soundtrack. Not to mention the fact that Sean Patrick Flanery looked "simply irresistible". If only I were a piece of paper being crafted into an airplane by those wonderful hands! The more times I watch it, the more I love it.
Sweet
posted on 26 May 2009Well I know this movie isn't great or anything, but I've already watched it a few times and it's just a real 'feel-good-movie' for me. It's sweet and if I'm not in a very critical mood I can actually think of the script as being original and funny. But at some points all the romantic weird magic stuff gets a bit too much.. Bút, still a sweet movie.
huh..
posted on 22 May 2009Have you ever wondered what happened to those actors who made one of the most renowned films a while back but seem to have disappeared from the face of the earth? And then all of a sudden they make a comeback and next thing you know they are in every movie you watch. The same happened to me with Sean Patrick Flannery. I did love his character in Boondock Saints and I said to my self 'huh, what happened to those guys?' and next thing I know I see him in a movie such as this. Now what can I say about this particular movie? Simply nothing. The trailer made it look like a kooky love story with a witch so you can imagine a lot of hilarious situations. However, i was dead wrong; the movie from the very start lost its attraction and the whole of it seemed to focus on nothing but pains and hardship a normal relation may go through (assuming you have ever had relations with a witch before). The magic element is all in the food and it plays a very rare part in the entire movie. What was the point of the movie? it was not funny and it was slow. Way too slow for my taste. It would be however a good romance flick so don't even think about sitting this movie with your buddies and drink beers. Its mushy mushy time and get your handkerchief ready for a sad movie (very sad indeed).
I laughed so hard.....at how bad it was!
posted on 25 Apr 2009Sorry to those who liked it,but I (a TOTAL romantic comedy lover) thought this was the STUPIDEST plot for a movie. A movie about a magical crab???? Was this serious? I honestly could not get passed the crab to even attempt to take the rest of the movie seriously. The actors were good, as they usually are in their roles, but this crab just made it laughable. I am actually shocked at how many people liked it. Not being sarcastic, just really surprised. My sister and I rented it and were just belly laughing through the whole thing about the crab. We still joke about it as the worst movie we have ever seen. She's a total independent and foreign film junkie. I am a romantic comedy/ big american production type fan. Both of us agreed on this. It was just a really bad premise.
A Little Light Fluff.
posted on 03 Apr 2009Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in this movie about a young woman running a small restaurant once owned and operated by her late mother. Gellar's character is a horrible cook and the eatery is on the verge of closing. One day while out gathering ingredients she meets a strange man who predicts that things are about to change for the better and suggests she buy some crabs. One of the little fellows gets away and ends up causing the initial meeting between Gellar and Sean Patrick Flanery, playing the manager of a hip and savy restaurant about to open up uptown. From that point on, Gellar's luck changes and she becomes a great cook, putting all of herself in her work.
I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would. The plot was predictable and most of the it was stolen directly from LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE. In fact, this movie is basically LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE for teens. It's nice to see Gellar in a girl-next-door role instead of some vampire-killing sleeze or sexy, but loose woman role (stars are much more beautiful when they play down to earth characters). Flanery's character lacks depth, but it isn't the actors fault and it's nice to see him working again. Basically, there's nothing deep here, just a little light fluff.
i thought this movie was excellent
posted on 20 Mar 2009i thought this was an excellent movie, for a while i didnt think it was going to come onto video, but it did so, yeah. sean patrick flannery was great but sarah michelle gellar was excellent, i cant wait for her next movies to hit theaters, Buffy the vampire slayer and hannibal, which is the sequal to silence of the lambs. Amanda Shelton is an enchanting character and i say if you saw this movie and liked it.......READ THE BOOK!!!!!!!
Cute
posted on 15 Mar 2009The script was great. I liked interaction between Tom and his assistant Lois. It seems every movie nowadays endorses sex without consequences, and I thought this was one of them. But then that depends on what you believe in. Overall, I liked the film...one of those cute-sy date movies.
Great movie for those light and whimsical in heart.
posted on 09 Mar 2009Simply Irresistible is one of my absolutely favorite movies. Typically I like your "guy movies" ... you know, explosions and blood, but this movie hits on my softer nerves. It's such an amazing movie for those that believe in love, and the craziness of the whole deal. Those those like a practical film, keep on looking! but here you have a light and greatly acted film. The people who suggest that this film is not worth your time, well clearly they didn't understand the film. It's all about following your heart, and excepting the fact that love can oft times bring unexpected changes in one's life and great consequences. A great soundtrack and engaging story just add to my love for this film as well.
Pretty star, dreadful script
posted on 08 Mar 2009I bought the DVD on the strength of having watched the last 10 minutes or so on HBO. I just *had* to find out how it happened. And Sarah Michelle Gellar looked quite appealing in the short segment I saw.
It turns out that I'd already seen the best part of the movie -- the ending. Gellar's character triumphs over adversity and rides off happily into the sunset. Or whatever. But the screenwriters and/or producers threw together a patchwork of half baked nonsense to get us there.
It turns out that Gellar's triumph wasn't over adversity, it was over her own incompetence. She started the movie as the propretor/cook of a small Manhattan eatery that she inherited from her parents. The handful of regular patrons remain purely out of inertia, since Gellar's cooking is reputed to be awful. That is, until the day she buys a "magic crab" whose presence in her kitchen transforms her miserable attempts at cooking into works of art. I'm sorry, but such a premise doesn't inspire sympathy for a character, no matter how pretty she is.
There are a few obvious parallels with the wonderful "Like Water For Chocolate," like bouts of anger and tears that obviously affect those who eat Gellar's cooking. But the thinness of the rest of the movie make these homages look like failed attempts at cinematic hipness.
There are a few nice moments, notably the scene where her crush, who becomse obsessed with her cooking, "mugs" an elderly couple who have some carry-out treats from Gellar's restaraunt. But a romantic scene is marred by unexplained (and thankfully unrepeated) levitation.
I find myself wondering how many cooks had their fingers in this production. It was more than enough to spoil the broth.
"Simply Irresistible" really is simply irresistible!
posted on 07 Mar 2009The title to this movie is so fitting. The entire movie is really and truly "Simply Irresistible." I loved it! From the very beginning, SMG is fantastic. To be honest, I went to see it because of her. I'm a huge fan of Ms. Gellars. I thought it would be a good way to spend a boring Saturday afternoon, watching her on the big screen. I went and surprised myself by discovering how WONDERFUL this movie is! The acting is superb, the story is great, and it's funny too! I recommend it to anyone! I plan on seeing it again, very soon!

Completely awful, even for Sarah Michelle Gellar fans
posted on 30 Aug 2009This movie is totally AWFUL! You'll notice early on in the movie, the dialogue is totally dead, the clipping is poor, the story even worse.Even fans of Sarah Michelle Gellar will have a hard time getting through this one. Kids around ages 10-12 could probably find it OK though, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
