what is with the sphere

posted on 27 Aug 2009

at the end of sphere, the sphere leaves, whats with the sphere to begin with? i did not enjoy sphere. the cast of sphere was amazing though, so many names. but the plot? "lets board the sphere" and talk about it for a while before it departs.. suck film.while watching sphere i was wondering if a film called triangle might have worked better. at least a triangle is sharp and pointy, maybe they could try to stab each other with it. to conclude, I've seen better films. this film is probably the worst out of the last 100, or out of films I've seen this year.the version i watched was the special edition DVD version, and lets just say i wont be viewing any of the special features.

Sphere ****

Sphere represents a new standard in science fiction. With a solid plot and
good acting, it proves itself to be better than the stereotypical childish
effects films. Director Barry Levinson provides great visuals that make the
spooky underwater environment come alive. The film is a psycological
mystery thriller that keeps you guessing to the very end. It has good
dialogue and is more concerned with characters and their development than
with cool looking ways of killing them off. Based on Michael Crichton's
book, Sphere is a breath of fresh air in a genre that really needs
it.

there's one thing to say about this movie , it is completely underrated. it has a great cast(dustin Hoffman,Sharon Stone so on )that is matched by great acting and some great violence. sphere is quite a scary movie no matter what anybody says and when the twist is revealed it makes you understand exactly why it's scary , and Samuel l Jackson is just scary in it easily his best performance in a movie since pulp fiction .do not underestimate this film no matter what you've heard it is great living proof that sci-fi horror still lives and as long as there's more sci-fis like sphere it will live on for a long time

Riveting!!!

I found this movie riveting! 1000 feet below sea level with a possible alien being. The complexed characters such as Sharon Stone, Samuel Jackson, Dustin Hoffman and of course my own favorite Liev Schrieber. This film left me wanting a sequel. :'} Lorraine

Good Sci-Fi

When watching this movie the first time I missed the point I had to watch it again and I thought it was an average sci-fi flick. Although many movies come to mind when watching Sphere but I love the actors in this movie Hoffman & Jackson did an ok job. I think if a part 2 was made it would be more enjoyable

Awesome

For all you people that think Dustin Hoffman did a bad job, I would like you guys to imagine trying to act in front of nothing and see how well you do. That's just my views on the subject. He is an awesome actor even in Sphere. Sphere was a good movie. It made people think instead of sitting there being brain washed. I would recommend for people to read the book then go rent it. I wasn't disappointed and Dustin Hoffman's acting was no less than his other movies. His best his Rain Man though.

Captivating build right to the last second... in the nature of great SF.

This movie only got better as it went along. Rather than collapsing at the last half hour, I thought it went beyond what a normal Hollywood film would do, explaining each detail, paying off all the mysterious and horrific plants earlier in the film, raising questions all the way about human nature and our own fears and dreams. Like great SF novels, it dove into human morality and presented its own answer to the intriguing premise.I accidentally started watching this movie on TV starting midnight, and it kept me up till three. The story overwhelmed the picture for me, but that doesn't mean the visuals aren't great. Even with a 4:3 TV presentation, the grandeur of the giant fin of the spaceship and the utter perfection and awe of the sphere come across beautifully, with the help of a decent score. The maturity of the look and effects of the film actually surprised me, as I was expecting a spoiled version of what one could only imagine. Yet, as a smart director, he chose to keep everything very subtle, showing only glimpses of radar and dark mystified environments.Even if it's only because I'm a great fan of science fiction, this is a film to be seen again.

Monster MIA from monster movie

*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*Will Hollywood ever get tired of ripping us off? Why not give audience members what they want? Is that too radical? Is it more satisfying to be deceitful and laugh at all the suckers who pile into movie theaters? This movie was a total, unashamed lie. So an alien ship lands in the ocean. The usual gaggle of scientists check it out. They find, yes, a sphere. It's big and shiny. So it turns out that Mr. Sphere can make your worst fear come to life. Ok. Fine. So thankfully, a lot of their fears revolve around things in the ocean. One person hates jellyfish and another hates squids. Now here's where the problem lies.So if I fear a giant squid, logically a giant squid should attack. Right? RIGHT?! Where's the monster? I would expect this kind of cheap laziness from a B movie but this flick had some dollars thrown at it. Where's the squid? In other words, WHERE'S THE PAYOFF?! Wow. Ripped off yet again. Denied a monster. The ending is what seals the deal on it's lameness. *SPOILER ON ENDING*How to resolve the sphere dilemma? How can we really stick it to the audience to let them know they've been taken? Their solution? They think the sphere away and it flies off into space. Yes. Think your troubles away. Ugh. I tried that trick with this movie but no dice. All I can see is Hollywood laughing their head off at another successful con job.

Quite simply one of the worst films I have ever seen

posted on 13 Jun 2009

Apart from a promising start this turned into an appalling film with no apparent purpose or sensible plot. I never made head nor tail of the sphere. What made it especially bad was the fact that it had usually good actors like Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone, whereas it might have been forgivable if it had used unknown actors.

If you don't expect too much...

then you're not likely to be disappointed. As has been mentioned, there are some definite similarities here with "Event Horizon" which are unmistakable. There are some aspects which could have been interesting if explored better - the thin line between the real and imagined, the darkness of the human mind, etc. Unfortunately, none of this movie's promise is brought anywhere near fruition, and the seemingly impressive cast doesn't redeem it.

Great Movie

From when the movie started until it stopped, the movie was very interesting. Suspense, drama, and climax play the major part in the movie. Sort of hard to follow at first but once you know what is going on, its hard to take your eyes off. I wouldn't recommend smaller ones to watch the movie at night. It can be quite frightening in some parts. Very high-tech and very well put together. I would definitely recommend this movie to others!

Interesting but long

posted on 17 Apr 2009

This movie has good atmosphere and good dialogue, if you like psychologically intriguing text. It is a bit long in some places. The bloody scenes aren't the best, as they distract from the deep thoughts that aren't the most easy to understand anyway. Definitely worth seeing.

Great book, great movie. History repeats itself.

After watching Sphere, there was one thing that stood out above all others. The movie borrowed a LOT from the book. But even so, some of the things in the book were not described very well and the movie brought those things to life. Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson gave great performances while Dustin Hoffman was a little on the slow side of things. He sounded like a vacuum cleaner which droned on and on and on. But Dustin Hoffman's horrible performance does not stop this from being a good movie. The science in the movie and the connection between the characters makes this a movie that is worth watching!

Big Cast, Big Budget, Sorry Film

posted on 06 Mar 2009

"Sphere" is a pure trial to sit through. Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson are all just present in this tale of an underwater expedition who are out to explore what may be an extraterrestrial vehicle at the bottom of the ocean. The film is slow-moving and the payoff is disappointing. A film that could have been interesting is instead turned into a generic movie that is very similar to several other sorry underwater exploration flicks. 2 stars out of 5.

the book by Michael Crichton is so much better, but the movie's a fun ride too!

The book sphere, by Michael Crichton, is excellent. The movie on the other hand, falls short. The film of course, doesn't follow the book exactly, like all book-to-movies, however, it does follow pretty closely, considering. Dustin Hoffman fits into PERFECT character. He plays his character just like the book plays him. Quiet. Not very excitable. Samuel L. Jackson, was also good. However, my casting flaw would be Sharon Stone. She's horrible, not playing her character at all well. However, for some reason people don't like this movie, even despite Sharon Stone and some other flaws. I watched this before the book, so I don't like it because I read the book. I like this film before I read the book. So, I don't get why people don't like SPHERE. I mean, sure it's not great, but it's entertaining enough on a friday/saturday night to watch along with some popcorn. Give this film a break. Rent it.....I'm sure you won't be too dissapointed.

Michael Crichton's Sphere comes to the big screen.

I thought Sphere was great with its all star cast and great story line. The movie pretty much follows the book although I wish the squid scene was more explicit like in the book. The special effects are excellent and the dialogue was one of a kind. It's not only a Sci-fi thriller but it has a psychological side to it that is quite eerie. If you're not the Sci-fi type then don't watch it, if you are then I recommend it.

An excellent movie for the intellects among us...

Alright, I've heard all the comments... Uninspired, unoriginal, boring, whatever... My question is, what movie did these people watch. I can't be the same movie I saw. Granted, "Sphere" isn't a movie for those who prefer to plop their brain on the chair next to them while sucking in a dazzling visual charade devoid of plot, but for those of us who like to get involved in a story, it's hard to do better than this. Talk about sharp dialect, and plot twists. And then there's the tension, the tightness of the whole setting. Just like when Samuel L. Jackson says, "we're going to die down here, yo know." so matter-of-factly. Yikes... if that's not what you're into, fine, go check out "Spiceworld". But don't slam a movie for aspiring to be something more. "Sphere" is a movie for those of us who love a good story. And it's hard to do better than this.

This is my favorite Michael Crichton movie so far!!

The movie Sphere defently should be seen if you are a Crichton fan. I do suggest that you read the book first so the movie does not limit your imagination. The cast is superb and could not get any better. The movie is about a team of people sent under water to examine a spaceship under the water. During their trip inside the ship they find a giant gold sphere. What does it do? Why does a giant squid attack the people? and what does a homicidal alien named Jerry have to do with it? Find out by watching SPHERE.

Stay Away From Sphere

This movie, with an excellent cast manages to start out very good and get incredibly stupid. I gave this movie a standing ovation only because it was over. This film is a waste of great talent. Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson and Sharon Stone are in this movie and why they would agree to do this stupid film is beyond me. The movie is some sort of silly science fiction about some alien space ship that crashes in the ocean, sound like The Abyss? Queen Latifah is in this movie, and like almost all African-Americans in Hollywood films she is killed of early. The movie starts out so good, but why did it get so bad? Could they not afford good writers halfway through production? I am baffled to be perfectly honest.
Anyway Dustin Hoffman and Samuel L. Jackson have done some great films, this is not one of them, watch something else, it can't be anywhere half as bad as this one. (unless it is one of those stupid teen movies)

WHAT?

posted on 08 Jan 2009

I can say that I almost didn't understand a word in this movie! That is what it made it so bad for me. So you can understand that those people are dreaming and that the sphere is making all of it. But how did they discover it. All the where trying to explain, was just IMPOSSIBLE know what a heck where they talking about. And this is one of the bad things about this kind a movies. They spend half of the movie, explaining what is happening, and you just sit there wondering what are those people sayin. One bad thing about this movie, is that is obvious the end. The three major stars survive, and everyone else dye! I wonder why? If all the actors would had been unkown the end would had been more surprising. But is obvious, just obvious! Not a good movie. It really look like Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sharon Stone, had to pay a very expensive house or something for doing this!
