Better Than People Say
posted on 31 Aug 2009I admit that The Phantom Menace isn't quite as good as other Star Wars films, but it's still pretty good. I was a little bit disappointed the first time I watched it, but I gave it another chance and realized how good it actually was once you look past the surface of certain characters and races. Everytime I watch it the movie seems to get better because I pick up little things that add to the overall Star Wars Universe. That being said, the main reason I give it only four stars is because after watching the deleted scenes I see what the movie could have been had some of those scenes been left in. If anyone has read the novelization they know how important certain scenes were that were left out of the theatrical release of Episode I. Perhaps George Lucas will release Special Editions of the first three films in the series (Episodes I-III) and include those additional scenes to expand the universe a bit more. If that happens I will definitely be giving the extended version of this film five stars. So this only gets four stars, but seeing and/or buying this DVD is a must if you are a science-fiction fan, and especially if you are even a casual Star Wars fan. For those who dismissed this film before, I say give it another chance. I did and I was glad I gave it another watch.
Great expectations!
posted on 30 Aug 2009Yes, The Phantom Menace finally passed the $300 million mark. Now everyone is asking `Will it sink Titanic? Will it become the number one movie of all times?'I don't care about these concerns. I didn't care about the hype and the lineups before its release either. The only thing I cared about was when I was sitting in the theater and waiting for the movie to start, fans all around me, everyone was so exited. I was happy that I could be a part of this event just like the time I went to see Titanic. The film started, the story was explained in running credits on the screen and we were dumped right in the middle of it. Characters came and went, talked, fought, died, but I didn't feel anything. Most of the cast weren't even humans. The ones who were weren't properly introduced. There was a race scene, which indubitably reminded me of `Ben-Hur'. The scenery was spectacular and I thought that they did a great job in terms of computer animation and FX. But what about a story? I was expecting so much that I felt a little down when the movie was over. So many questions were wriggling in my head: `Why didn' t they do more with Darth Maul when he had such chilling looks? Why was Ewan McGregor left out? Wasn't Obi-Wan an important character, didn't he deserve more introduction? What was all the fuss about JarJar Binks? He was neither understandable nor likable, just plain goofy? Was this a kid's movie? Then what are all these 40-year-olds doing here?I guess I was disappointed because I expected too much. This wasn't supposed to be an impulsive movie. At least it looked really great and those under water chases and the pod-race were certainly a lot of fun. Maybe I should go to Disneyland and enjoy some rides! Maybe I was too emotional when I cried my heart out at the end of Titanic!
Where's the force?
posted on 28 Aug 2009I really have no idea what a Star Wars virgin would think of this movie because I have no perception of that viewpoint; The Trilogy is like a religion to me. My review of The Phantom Menace is mainly for those who recognize the number in my username (2187) and not for those who call me "a geek." I hated this movie, but I am ready to back up my argument. I am also ready to make a few arguments in favor of this film, for as an aspiring filmmaker myself, I would want constructive criticism, not unmerciful bashing. The main reasons I hated this movie are 1) it doesn't even compare to The Trilogy, 2) it's kind of boring, and 3) Jar Jar Binks. Some may say that TPM had way too high expectations, too much anticipation, too much to live up to, etc. So what? That's just the way it goes; we (the fanatics) had high expectations and TPM should have and could have lived up to them. But it didn't. Star Wars lives as the number 2 box office seller ever for a reason. There's no reason George Lucas couldn't have made TPM just as good. SW had a simple, easy to follow plot with exciting battles and colorful characters. TPM had a complicated, confusing plot with dull, predictable battles and flat, simple characters. The makers of this movie were trying too hard to impress everyone. Too many special effects make them not special anymore. The computer graphics could have been good but they were overdone and ended up looking fake. The Phantom Menace is boring because it lacks emotion. Anakin was too young; he should have been a teenager and a good actor. Then we could have seen some real passion in his eyes. Liam Neeson was pretty good, a believable Jedi, but he should have talked about the force more and not those weird midi-chlorians. The force is what makes Star Wars so brilliant, and it was only hinted at in TPM, which is backwards because this movie is supposedly where it all begins. And Anakin not having a father? That's taking it a little far. He's not magical; he's just the one who supposed to bring balance. And Queen Amidala got on my nerves because she had no personality and Natalie Portman sounded really weird talking in such a low voice. Ewan McGregor was good as Obi-Wan, but I'm biased because I love him.The greatest flaw of all was Jar Jar Binks. I swear I would have liked this movie a lot more had he not been in it. He was brainless, annoying, served no real purpose in this movie at all, and he looked like a cartoon. The least they could have done was have an actor in a costume; a computer graphic is not a character. You couldn't even understand what he was saying half the time. I hated him so much I could have pulled out my hair and eaten it. He just ruined this film for me. He made this movie painful instead of entertaining. We already have C-3P0 and R2-D2, two of the greatest sidekicks ever created; we don't need another one, let alone one with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. So what got me through this movie? Number 1, the music. John Williams' score lives up to the expectations by far. The song that plays during the fight between Qui-Gon, Darth Maul and Obi-Wan is absolutely amazing. Thank goodness George Lucas stuck to one tradition: one of the most talented composers to date. Another thing that I liked was the introduction of R2-D2 and C-3PO into the saga. R2 saved the day as always and meets 3PO for the first time; that was a great part of the story. These two should have been in the movie more, as they are trademark characters of the Star Wars series. Also, as mentioned before, Neeson and McGregor held on to the remains of the true Star Wars spirit left in this movie. But why were their light sabres different? They had to change that too?Overall this movie was a disappointment to me. Many have said that the two episodes to come will explain the confusing plot and make The Phantom Menace seem not so bad, but that is not acceptable. All three movies of The Trilogy fit together as one, but they also stand strong individually with no extreme explanations needed. TPM should be the same. Lucas and crew knew what they were getting into with this project, and they should have tried harder to make this movie more like the originals we know and love, and less flashy (it gave me a headache after a while). However, I do hope that Episodes 2 and 3 learn from the mistakes of The Phantom Menace.
Critics miss the point.
posted on 24 Aug 2009This movie is incredible. My only problem is the critics who think they are high and mighty. They've been widely putting Episode I down. They are the only people who have had expectations higher than any movie could reach. The only way for George Lucas to make a bad Star Wars movie would be for him to TRY to make a bad movie. The reason is simple. The entire "Star Wars" saga (Episodes I-VI) was written (or at least known) before any movie was ever made. What real Star Wars fans love is the story, which was written as one, six-part saga. Mr. Lucas will have to try really hard to disappoint his real fans.
Visually stunning, but perhaps they could have had computer enhanced acting too?!
posted on 24 Aug 2009Well, If you liked the original movies, then this is a lot like them. Same directing from the 70's and the same stiff acting by the Skywalkers. Luke developed well in the latter movies, hopefully they will go with and older Anakin who will have to be played by a decent actor. Also... Jar-Jar = Bantha poodoo. His entire race was much worse than the Ewoks. I never want to see them again. Of course on the good side, AMAZING EFFECTS, and all the fighting scenes, especially the sword play. There were many things set up which could play out well in the next movies. It seems that this is really meant to be only one third of a story. This was the character introduction and general setting up of things. Nothing more, nothing less. We shall see if the best is yet to come :)
Dumbed down epic lacks the oomph of the original trilogy...
posted on 24 Aug 2009This movie had cool special effects... The score by John Williams was brilliant... I loved Darth Maul... The story...ughh...it sucked...but the special effects were cool!!! I've already been threatened with stoning at my job by all the Star Wars fanatics who cherished this overblown piece of poo... I could'nt debate with them! IT WAS STAR WARS HENCE IT WAS THE GREATEST THING EVER! AND IF I DIDNT LIKE IT,I'D FIND MY EXISTANCE IN DANGER!!! What is it with this fanatism! The film was mainly a two hour commercial for its franchise! Not a film that can be enjoyed, truly, over and over again my rationalizing film folk like myself!!! Why cant they see that George Lucas has turned into the motion picture anti christ!!!He's Big Brother!!! Ignorance Is Strength!!!AGHHH!!! Wait, someones' knocking at my door... one moment, I...After much thought I have realized that the previous review was foolish because I found STAR WARS:THE PHANTOM MENACE to be the greatest Motion Picture of all time and worthy of every award and bag of coin presented it. Therefore I detract my derogatory statements of Mr. Lucas for I've realized that he is brilliant and we are all fortunate to have experienced this wonderful film and the Star Wars franchise that has newly spawned from it. I also believe Jar Jar Binks to be of pivitol importance to the fowarding of the storyline...And, the special effects are cool too.4 out of 10
Worst sci fi since Plan 9 from Outer Space
posted on 24 Aug 2009Let me just start off by saying, SHAME ON YOU GEORGE LUCAS! How could you take such a wonderful franchise, the STAR WARS saga, and create such a horrific atrocity? How dare you violate your fans like this?EPISODE 1 is by far the most vile and retarded science fiction movie I have ever seen. This movie proved a very strange theory for us all, and that is, that there is no limit to how much money and technology you can expend on a single movie and yet create an end product that is worse than even the lowest budget attempts. EPISODE 1 assaulted every sense of taste and decency that an average person would have. The plot of the movie is paper thin and yet over-written. It basically revolves around this SITH lord who using the Trade Federation to exploit some people who live on a peaceful planet. Some Jedis come along to negotiate peace and the Sith takes the opportunity to try to assasinate them. Along the way they encounter what must be the most ludicrous and annoying character in cinematic history, Jar Jar Binks, who is a poorly done computer generated monstrosity that attempts to provide comic reliefe for the movie. His jokes are not funny and most of his lines, including his accent, are racially offensive. He clearly speaks with a Jamaican accent and refers to the two WHITE Jedis as "his massa." He is not the only character in this pile of garbage to be racially offensive, the evil "fish people" of the trade federation deliver their ametuerish lines in an Asian accent. Anyway, the two Jedis come across an INCREDIBLY annoying little boy named Anakin and blah, blah, blah, blah. Are you bored reading my review yet? You should thank me! This is actually better than the movie! The movie is so poorly written it defies description. It is on par with your average television Soap Opera. The lines are banal at best, offensive at their worst, and generally just boring. The special effects are supposed to be top-of-the-line, ground-breaking, but they are actually just cartoonish. The over-all look of the movie is what I would call "Anime gone bad."Let me point out one aspect of the film that actually bothered me more than any of the other attrocities. The action-oriented conflict of the movie revolves around one loan bad guy named Darth Maul who is chasing down the Jedis, Obi-Wan and Qui Gon. He chases them through part of the movie and this sets up the big final fight scene, the show down between them, climaxing in an over-the-top light sabre duel to the death. One quick criticism: When did the Jedis start learning Kung Fu? I guess the Jedi counsel must have gotten a copy of THE MATRIX at some point. The light sabre fights in the first three movies were much more exciting. The problem with the light sabre duel in Episode 1, however, is not so much in the choreography, but the premise of the fight itself. Why is Darth Maul so emphatically chasing the Jedis? Simply because his master told him to. That is a major lack in character motivation. Why does he attack them both at the same time? This OBVIOUSLY puts him at a disadvantage. And this is the real problem. The end fight is Qui Gon and Obi Wan teaming up against Darth Maul. This makes Darth Maul the UNDERDOG in the movie! And audiences always root for the underdog! So this totally deflates the excitement right from the start. Not to mention, its pretty stupid of Darth Maul to do this, and it is also not very sinister. If he was really on "the dark side" of the force, would he not wait and attack his prey when they are at a real disadvantage? Wouldn't that at least be smarter? And it would make the audience hate him more. Instead, the audience is not given any such motive on which to base their dislike for Darth Maul. But hey, he wears black, so I guess he must be evil! That is LAME! An audience needs character development in order to really get in to the movie. Darth Maul is not developed AT ALL! His story amounts to a scene where his master tells him to go kill the Jedis, and then he attacks the Jedis who escape, and then finally he fights them at the end, and that's it. This was VERY POORLY DONE!What I believe happened is, George Lucas simply got too big for his own good. He had too much power and not enough motivation to try harder. When he first made STAR WARS A NEW HOPE, he was really a struggling film maker. He was FORCED to re-work his script, time and time again, making it better and better. Experimenting with what works and does not work. The pressure was on to prove himself. But these days, what does he have to prove? He is litterally the wealthiest man in Hollywood. Why waste his time STRIVING for perfection? What difference did it make to him what the end product of the film amounted to? It made no difference. And in fact, the film totally sucked, and yet made a ton of money world wide. Why? Simply because he exploited the devoted fans like myself. This go around, we are the ones who suffered for Lucas' mistakes, not him. And now, he has gone on to make the next installment, EPISODE 2, which no doubt be just as bad if not WORSE than EPISODE 1. I would not normally think that a movie could actually be BELOW the low point that EPISODE 1 sank to, but George shocked me and taught me a lesson: if there is a new low point, he will find it. And so it seems, EPISODE 2 will in fact exceed 1 in SUCK-i-tude. Its almost as if he is trying to make the movie worse, he isn't even bothering to shoot it on FILM! And after viewing the trailer for the new movie, it is OBVIOUS that it was shot on Hi Def Video. Which, by the way, make no mistake, LOOKS LIKE VIDEO! Again, this is substandard to the tradition set forth by the earlier Star Wars films.Shame on you George Lucas! You should have backed off from this project like you did with Empire Strikes Back. Irvin Kershner should have been brought in to bail out the new Star Wars projects. And on that note, is it any real surprize that Empire was the BEST of all the Star Wars movies? Hmmm, could it have anything to do with the fact that George Lucas had almost nothing to do with that film? George, you need to take note: NO ONE liked HOWARD THE DUCK. Therefore, that kind of film making is a TOTAL WASTE! Jar Jar Binks would not even appeal to a small child, and he did nothing but insult the intelligence of the rest of the audience. Also, the chariot race in Episode 1 was really a low point of the movie. For one thing, it was TOTALLY ripped off from an ANIME movie, so it was not even original. And isn't it strange that the "Pod Racer" video game was released WAY before the movie? Clearly, that entire scene was put in the movie as nothing more than a marketing ploy so that George Lucas could get even welthier from the sales of that stupid video game. I would be willing to forgive such a blatant selling out if that scene had actually been worth watching, but as it turned out, it was just as boring as the rest of the movie! And finally, a note to other Star Wars fans: If you are defending EPISODE 1, you are KIDDING YOURSELF. We ALL know that movie SUCKED really bad. Now, I say this to you, DO NOT GO SEE ANY MORE STAR WARS MOVIES! The Star Wars fans should REFUSE to go see EPISODE 2. I am not going to see it, and I won't even rent it. This is the ONLY way to send a clear message to George Lucas that we will not just sit back and take his crappy attempts.Avoid Episode 1 at ALL COSTS!!! I am voting this movie a 1, which means AWFUL on the IMDB. I wish I could vote in the NEGATIVE INTEGERS!
A long time ago, in a prequel not so far away.
posted on 22 Aug 2009Now some "true" Star Wars fans were disappointed in this new series of movies, while I say their idiots. They were still sore over the redo on the old Star Wars movies and I say they were stupid about that to. I thought the older movies had flaws that needed fixing. How can anyone like effect errors? Anyway, about the Phantom Menace. Jar Jar Binks was annoying at times, but comedy relief can get a little annoying at times plus, sometimes it was hard to understand him at times. But basically I did like Jar Jar. He has a good heart, clumsy, but a good heart. The early years of Anakin Skywalker is interesting. But I think Greg Proops did a great job as the English speaking alien announcer of the Pod Race. 91/2 STARS. The star chart doesn't do half stars.
play the role. whatever.
posted on 20 Aug 2009the critics are kinda right in there perspective. although, they're always looking for the utopian/anti-utopian world of they're own self-absorbed dreams.and they're always trying to be the world's intellectual filmic frontmen and women....i don't blame them.episode one is indeed cold in the space of a deeper character development. and it's got a lot of annoying creature camp.but the movie plays a role in a far bigger picture, than some pathetic film critic's wishes for deep thought.it's a definite must-see. but then so are films like the italian recent "life is beautiful". or i dunno.. "shakespeare in love".we are a playful species, however. us americans. we are the world's most powerful warriors, collective. and we should like to believe we belong to some higher order or priority or cause for our actions. we want to believe we are as powerful and benevolent as jedi.no?so whom shall the critics criticize? americans? critics themselves? hmm?watch the movie. but know there's a lot more out there than what you think is worthwhile, people....
Forget what you have heard about this movie...
posted on 18 Aug 2009... because it does not suck! Obviously, the critics who negatively reviewed this movie saw a totally different movie than the one I have already seen 3 times (as of writing this, it is still opening day). Perhaps these critics were accidentally shown a copy of the mediocre "Star Wars" rip-off, "Wing Commander" ... I don't know.Anyway, I am a huge "Star Wars" fan, and "Empire" has always been my favorite, and still is, but this movie still rocks! "The Matrix" used to hold my spot for "Best Movie of 1999", but hands down it is now "The Phantom Menace".So, to sum it all up: "The Phantom Menace" isn't as good as "The Empire Strikes Back"; It's better than "Return of the Jedi"; and it's just as good as "Star Wars: A New Hope". Oh, gotta go get some sleep for tomorrow when I'll probably see it a couple of more times ... and then destroy my sister's copy of "Titanic".
Very Thin
posted on 18 Aug 2009The Phantom Menace is really disappointing. It totally lacks the mythic sense of the 'first' three movies. In those films, the special effects rode on the characters' backs. Here, instead, the special effects are meant to awe us and draw us away from the lack of a strong mythos.Instead, we get pod races and an underwater chase which, while good as amusement park rides, don't really advance the storyline. Look at the original Star Wars. These set pieces naturally flowed from the events going on in the film. I got the feeling that they came up with this pod race idea and then fit the story around it.I am not the world's greatest Star Wars fan. I watched and appreciated the first three, but did not learn every line of dialogue. Still, I can see where those films used the idea of myth and archetype very well. Here, the characters are flat. One good point about the movie was seeing the young Obi Wan. It was the most interesting part for me to think about Obi Wan being a young, occassionally unsure jedi knight, instead of the monumental one we saw later. It was touching and done well by Ian Mcgregor. This is, of course, pretty much a 'must see' movie for most filmgoers. I'm sure the DVD/rental release will be amazingly popular. I just wish I had the sense that Lucas had put the care into the story and characters for this one as he had in previous ones. I don't buy that he had to set up a story so that's why this film is so superficial. If that's all he set out to do, then he shouldn't have bothered making the film until he had it all thought out.
I loved it.
posted on 16 Aug 2009I am going to go out on a limb and say that the Phantom Menace is the best Star Wars movie yet. I am tired of seeing reviews where people hate jar jar binks (yeah he is annoying, get over it) and say the movie is flat and has no real emotion. In response to these "critics" i point out the scene of anakin and his mother right before the leaves tatooine, very touching. The response of obi wan when...well you know the scene i'm speaking of; quite emotional. Yes the movie has many special effects but this alone does not make the movie. The rich characters and emotions shown by those characters is what makes star wars: the phantom menace every bit as good as the original trilogy. I am only 19 and did not see the first three installments in the theaters and maybe this is what makes the phantom menace to me more special than the originals. The old school fans can whine and complain about how phantom menace doesn't measure up to the first three but they know that this one is just as spectacular as the first time they saw star wars.
While it isn't perfect, it is sure a lot of fun to watch.
posted on 16 Aug 2009The reviews about this film have been mixed; several people have said that it lacks severely, but I disagree. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace proved to me that there is still magic left in the movies. There is also something in it that I found very enjoyable: a distinct lack of cynicism. Movies and television shows today, especially comedies, are so cynical that it seriously gets on my nerves sometimes. It's nice to see something with even a slightly uplifting outlook on life, considering the fact that movies such as the "The Matrix" (which was excellent) have had a distinctly unhappy, depressing view of society. Granted, the script isn't great, but has it ever been? Part of the fun of the Star Wars series is the "gee-whiz" type of script that all of the films have had. You aren't going to find anything deep or profound, but you are going to find that you are having a good deal of fun just sitting back and watching. One last thing: Jar-Jar. Jar-Jar is the movie's only real bane; they should have simply taken out the Chewbacca-type role and not have had him in there. He adds nothing to the story, and succeeds only in appealing to the very young. Despite this small fact, "Phantom Menace" entertains, and proves that the best movies are the ones that are fun to watch. You can bet that I'm going back to this one.
A Treat For Fans of Fantasy!
posted on 16 Aug 2009People have analyzed, dissected, chewed up and regurgitated the movie so many times that the last thing you probably want to hear is another review. Despite all the critics, for the average movie-goer who wants to be entertained this is as good as it gets!!! Come on people, this movie never professed to have the answers to all the questions in the universe - it was meant to rekindle the Star Wars spirit we felt when we were kids and introduce The Force to a whole new generation. So loosen up - watch the movie - and you'll be in for the ride of a lifetime!!!
Whatever
posted on 16 Aug 2009First off, I LOVE everything about the 'Star Wars' universe: the philosphy and theology, the aliens, and especially the toys. That said, I'm not sure where I stand concerning 'The Phantom Menace'. The script was poor, at best; I mean, there's Darth Vader running around sreaming "yippeee". Then we get to Jar Jar Binks. I hope Lucas kills him off in Episode II. The only redeeming factors were the Jedi duels, and the visual effects. I hope Lucas listens to his fans when making the next installments.
The pace is set.
posted on 14 Aug 2009Just under 7 years has now passed since Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace was released. In a sense of nostalgia, I think this movie will always have a warm place in my heart. You can indulge in the flaws, faults and inconsistencies that were created by this film in contradiction to the Original Trilogy (That then subsequently needed be remedied through the stories of the 2 to follow). That's all good and well, but by the same token, you need also to appreciate the movie culture and the stress of besting the (arguably) best film ever made. I know that George Lucas never expected to outdo the original, but by the same token, the only way it could be conceived that he would deliver a film anything like the originals would be to chop up bits and pieces of the originals and splice it all together.Since that was never going to happen, we must be content with this film. And I feel it's a brilliant delivery, despite the common need expressed by many fans to tear it down.OK, maybe Jar-jar should have been a much less annoying character who wouldn't be detrimental to our mental health and have the speech capacity of at least a 15 year old, and not a 4 year old. But this movie's not about him. It just has him.Let's focus on Obiwan Kennoby and Qui-Gonn Jinn. By this point as a Star Wars fan - or even casual bystander - everybody knew who Kennoby was. Luke's mentor. Yoda's apprentice. But wait, in this, Qui Gonn is his mentor. OK, some consider this an inaccuracy, but again: Obiwan's Point Of View is different to ours. There was a brilliance to the connection between these two that I feel every time I watch this movie. A bond like an uncle showing his nephew how to fish. He's keen to show and the nephew's keen to learn, but they occasionally have their falling outs. The mentor-learner relationship here is by far, one of the best and most lifelike in any film, executed perfectly by Liam Neeson and Ewan Macgregor. I promise you that you'll enjoy this movie on a much deeper level next time you watch it if you focus on the interpersonal interactions between these two, especially when on Coruscant.
Not perfect, but what movie is? I loved it imperfections and all!
posted on 12 Aug 2009Let's face it, some people simply don't like science fiction. I went to the film expecting to enjoy it reasonably well. I found myself thoroughly engrossed in George Lucas' vision of the early story. The un-PC accents didn't bother me at all. I'm a little tired of all the bad guys being Brits. I came away feeling that the majority of critics had gone in with a chip on their shoulders and were searching for things to carp about. The plot was more than sufficient and the dialogue was fine. I thought the performances well done and the special effects absolutely incredible. I think some people expected Lucas to wrap up all the answers in one movie and that's not going to happen. I also think the fact that Lucas is independent and has insisted on doing things his own way probably alienates a sizable chunk of the movie community. I'm eagerly looking forward to a second viewing because I know I missed many things the first time around. Too bad for those who were "greatly disappointed" but I have heard nothing but raves from the people I've talked to and without exception, they are all planning to see it more than once.
