Ugh! Really bad!

posted on 30 Aug 2009

I never expected Casper Van Dien to play in a good movie. And, while I think Jolene Blalock was a great (looking) Vulcan, I never expected her to deliver a fantastic performance. And after the horrible movie that Starship Troopers 2 was, I didn't think I could see worse. Well, let's be honest, it wasn't THAT bad, but it sucked big time. The special effects were decent for an obviously tiny budget movie, the acting was towards the bad side, the script was RIDICULOUS, while the directing was average. But the plot! Ugh! Can you believe that in the end a veteran soldier finds religion after being relentlessly pestered by a dumb blonde? And the soldier was a woman, so she didn't do it for the normal reason guys get religious around blondes! I mean, it felt like a Christian sect funded movie.Let me quote you a little: "Maybe we should kill him!" "Why, because he's crazy or he believes in God, like you?" "But... it's the wrong God!". Meh! A mindset fit for a terrorist.Bottom line: ignore this crappy mutant Starcraft clone tainted with a little of Starship Troopers (which was an anti-war book, you dolts!). Heinlein must be turning in his grave.

Thank [ the deity of your choice ] for some eye-candy in this disaster

The original novel by Robert Heinlein is one of the great classics of science-fiction literature, and helped to establish him as being a worthy on the same level as H.G. Wells or Richard Mathieson.Nothing committed to film ( with or without CGI ), in the three films which were allegedly based on Heinlein's visionary fiction, stack up to that story. The first one was semi-weak and semi-stupid, the second edition of the Troopers was too stupid for school and part three is, well, just laughable and horrible and idiotic.Laughable. The effects were puny and lacking coherence. Stupid, as in the brilliant people who are supposed to be the Federal administration are all clodhoppers in nice uniforms. Idiotic ?Me for being such a sucker for anything in science fiction that I paid good money to rent this barking dog with fleas. If there was a category beyond ( 1 ) on the low end, I'd select it.At the video store, when I returned the DVD, I told the clerks that next time they could just take my money and NOT TO LET ME WASTE MY TIME on anything this palpably bad, incoherent, and repugnant. There is one repulsive scene meant to be eye-candy, where the 'new' troopers selected to be matched with the super-armored suits ( a key element in the original fiction, not shown until now ), are placed on a platform buck naked as the suits are 'adapted' to them individually. It lasts maybe thirty to sixty seconds and is the most contrived scene ever inserted into a science fiction film. It is shameful.Verhoeven should sue to have his named dis-associated with this crappy excuse for a bugs-vs-human monster movie. He can keep the money, for all I care, but please stop boring us with these disgraceful sequels.

Religious propaganda for teenagers

posted on 26 Aug 2009

Watch this movie if you enjoy cheap cable-TV-scifi-series with religious overtones aimed for teenagers who take it seriously. The first Starship Troopers was excellent. The satirical black humor was intelligent and made me laugh out loud. In this sequel, the humor has been diminished to constant "Federal Network" -broadcasts, that are just sad recycling of jokes we've heard before.Regardless of it's hilariousness, in the original Starship Troopers there was also a sense of enjoyable space adventure. Here the minimal plot is so standard you don't even remember it while watching. The "Marauder" is seen shortly in the end: a robotic suit, how original! Also the CGI and the locations look disturbingly cheap. Most shocking an insult to the first part of the series is the religious propaganda. As there is almost no humor in the movie, it's replaced by god and faith, even trying to get the viewer emotional with this. I personally felt only annoyed. One could think that "Federal Network" funded this movie. Don't get brainwashed, don't watch this, unless there's nothing less painful available on the telly on a lazy Sunday evening.

Ruins this franchise

posted on 22 Aug 2009

It's extremely hard to get into this movie because it's a farce. The director obviously did not try to do this inadvertently but the silly dialogue, poor acting, cliché plot, and other crummy elements completely ruin this movie.I'm going to list a few disappointments for fellow readers. -This movie completely copies and overuses the propaganda advertising element from the first movie. -The actors obviously had little to no preparation for playing their role. The way the hold their guns, retreat, and physical appearance shows that the actors were picked up randomly from the streets and told to act. -Inappropriate dialogue. The things the actors say in the face of death makes you want to laugh. -Inappropriate acting. The situation and the way they act are completely uncorrelated. For example, in the face of death (a bug is right in front of their faces) the actors have arguments, they start to kiss as an entire PLANET is being blown up. -A general physically threatens an unarmed superior officer.Frankly, I'm a fan of the first movie, Starship Troopers. The second movie was a failure, so I expected this third movie to be much better. I was terribly upset when I realized they utterly butchered this movie as well. I do not recommend spending any time or money on viewing this movie. Time can be better spent watching paint dry.

Truly, truly terrible

posted on 20 Aug 2009

The first film was very original, and entertaining. Granted it was quite cheesy in parts, but it was the first time i had seen anything like it. The second film was a huge let down, but was still maybe a 3 or 4 out of 10. This film is so terrible its unreal. It starts off not too bad, but then a military officer get beaten up by a farmer (like that would happen), and the whole plot just gets more and more ridiculous. The whole religious sub-plot is so bad its comical. Why did Casper Van Dien sign up for this but not the second one? The end of the movie with the giant robot suits is one of the most cringe worthy scenes ever. The only good thing in this movie is Jolene Blalock from Enterprise. She acts superbly especially given such a pathetic script.

Horrible

posted on 14 Aug 2009

I was recommended to skip the second part because it was too awful. So I didn't see the second one and jumped to this third one. This part looked like it was set on a stage! Marines inside the ship are walking like passengers taking a stroll inside a sky liner! I couldn't feel the grip, action that was in the first part. Captain(!) Beck climbs the ladder as though she is pregnant; I mean, aren't soldiers supposed to move fast? The movie definitely had a core to spin the story around, but the cast was very horrible and special FX were a disaster. You could simply feel the animated & artificial bugs crawling around. I thought special FX gets better as time passes. May be this movie got a tight budget and decided to ditch cast and digital fx and get the movie released. Direction is to be blamed if not the special fx.The flaws are so apparent, that one person dies among six and the next shot shows all six people walking (!) and then later guess what? Yes, there are only five! May be they ran tight a budget on film editing too.Overall, it looked like a debut attempt by a half-graduated film school student playing with cast and FX.If the producers are thinking of a fourth installment, pl note that we will definitely love to have but only if it has compelling 'crew' behind the camera. And broaden your budget if you want a decent output.

the worst excuse for religious propaganda on what used to be a good movie ( the first one only ofc)

posted on 12 Aug 2009

the plot is thin, very thin, the actors leave much to be desired, but then it gets worst at the end it starts a huge mumbo jumbo about religion that sounds like an "eat this lollypop and be cool" propaganda except its not propaganda its religion .i say watch this movie and see how bad it gets and how pathetic religion is even spoils a movie that should be about fighting bugs -_-xanywya its a horrible movie i expected more but even casper van dien coming back to his former role didn't do it for me, i mean he says the well known phrase " you wana live forever" in the most terrible time and in a way that he seems to be making fun of the movie...but don't think its that bad its actually worst.. just watch it so you know how the director completely failed to criticise religion + dictatorship control instead it looks like propaganda.

Would you like to watch more?

posted on 08 Aug 2009

NO!! I Don't WANT TO WATCH MORE!!!!This film it's piece of crap! Really, far, far, far away from the first "Starship Troopers". Don't say to me that is a good sequel, because its not, its a fucklng shlt!!And the fact that the director are always insisting on the network news and propaganda : "would you like to know more?"...give me a break, it is simply a terrible rip off from the first "Starship Troopers".But the worst thing in the movie, its definitely Casper Van Dien, trying to do a though character...but he fail 100%..Im a Starship Trooper first flick fan, sincerely, this Starship 3: Marauder in my opinion is a bad movie. If you like this one, i recommend: "Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation" (its even worst than the third one).

Worth a viewing

So many have commented so I will be brief. My main beef with the film was the "Federation broadcasts" While their tone was excellent, their length was a little long. To me it seemed as if those vignettes were being used to PAD the film. In the first film those scenes were short and concise and quite funny, this time they were drawn out and slightly contrived...They used them to assist in the main story, as opposed to fleshing out the "world" of Starship Troopers. They could have save the $$$ on the Fed Broadcasts and put it back into FX.Also the Battle suits were neat but it would have been nice to actually SEE them in action rather than the obviously cost cutting tight shots of weapons discharging.

Starship Troopers 3 makes Starship Troopers 2 look like Starship Troopers 1. It's that contemptible. Starship Troopers 3: Marauder attempts to bring back Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico and with him the loyal fans of the first film as well. Don't be fooled. Van Dien has either forgotten how to act or lost whatever charisma he had in the first place. He's also NOT the star of the movie. Part 2 of the series benefited from having a good cast of character actors. The cast here is awful. I did not care for any of the actors nor their characters. And I also did not enjoy the "special" effects. The movie looks like a damn cartoon; a really cheap cartoon at that. Edward Neumeier deserves praise for writing two science fiction classics: Robocop and Starship Troopers. However, he both wrote and made his directorial debut on this garbage. I know all of his work has satire in it, but I don't remember it being literally shoved into my face. These sequels were just too late to the party and were not properly budgeted. This could have been a fun franchise once upon a time.

Don't watch the last 15 minutes

posted on 29 Jul 2009

Hmm, not really sure what to think of this movie. Although it's much better than the second one, it doesn't even come close to the first Starship Troopers. The CGI throughout the movie is pretty decent, considering they had a small budget for it, but at the end it's horrible. It seemed like they used almost all of their CGI-budget and then realized they still had to make the last two scenes. Several soldiers are killed by the bugs off-screen, with only screaming and flesh-tearing sounds in order to save money and you have to use your imagination. The nude scene had absolutely no purpose at all in the story and could easily have been left out, but luckily they didn't. It's also a tribute to Paul Verhoeven, who made Starship Troopers 1 and never makes a movie without nudity. What really gave me shivers was all the religion, especially in the last 15 minutes. It's extremely over-the-top, but maybe that's exactly what the writer/director wanted... at least I hope so. A tough female captain who is anti-religion and mocks it the entire movie, suddenly becomes weak and religious in the last three minutes, because of some 'dumb blonde', who only talks about "god", "prayer" and "church"... yeah right. How much drugs do you have to use to come up with something like "bug religion"? If all the religion isn't one big joke, then this movie must have been funded by some crazy sect. It has probably one of the most cheesy endings I've ever seen.Normally I'd given this movie a pretty good rating, considering the small budget they had to work with it and at times it's good fun with the gore, but all the religion bull killed it for me.

not good

I am sorry to say but this movie was really bad. The impression that I got from this movie was that it was made by high-school kids and porn actors, and it was full of mistakes and bad acting as well as terrible effects. Why would you try to do a movie that demands some money and know how, when you clearly don't have the knowledge for it. It seams that some studios nowadays just spit out movies for quick money and not for the public who is tricked into thinking that this would be a cool movie. I feel sorry for Casper who is thrown in to this movie to sell it; it's almost that you can see it in his eyes that he thinks this movie suck and script are horrible and that he is dying inside. I guess the man who made this movie is a man of faith, cause there's is a lot of that mixed with everything.

crap

the movie overall is not the worst i ever saw, but still pretty bad. i think for the budget the fx are not that bad, u have consider the amount of shots the cg-crew had to deliver and compare that to the part of the budget they got. it was OK.what really made me scream was all this patriotic and religious bullshit, especially at the end. god is great, god wants us to fight and to win, go to church and you'll become a hero, peace is bad. it almost seems like the whole budget was split between the church and actual us-government.i'm not the typical European that's on that anti-America-wave, but this was really too much...

In the front-line of the Second Bug War in planet Roku San, the charismatic Sky Marshal Omar Anoke (Stephen Hogan) arrives with his assistant General Dix Hauser (Boris Kodjoe) in an starship piloted by his fiancée Captain Lola Beck (Jolene Blalock) and they are welcomed by their friend and hero of Planet P Colonel Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien). While Anoke inspects the facility protected by fences, Dix, Lola and Rico go to a bar to celebrate their reunion. However, Dix has an incident with the local farmers and arrests Rico for insubordination; meanwhile, there is a shut down in the defense fences and the bugs break into the facility. Lola and Anoke escape in the starship, but it crashes in Planet OM-1 and Lola, Anoke, Chief Bull Brittles (Stelio Savante), Jingo Ryan (Cokey Falkow), Dr. Wiggs (Danny Keogh) and the religious flight attendant Holly Little (Marnette Patterson) save themselves in a rescue pod. When Dix discovers that Admiral Enolo Phid (Amanda Donohoe) has no intention to rescue the survivors in the Arachnid Quarantine Zone, he assigns Rico in the Marauder Program to lead a squad with six other troopers to rescue Lola and Anoke."Starship Troopers 3: Marauder" is a reasonable entertaining, with good and also awful points. The good ones are the ironic Federal Network, with manipulative messages and brainwash of the citizens; Jolene "T'Pol" Blalock; and the story as a whole that is not bad. However, there are many stupid lines and dialogs; annoying characters and situations (the attitudes and behavior of the flawed Dix is totally incoherent, Holly Little and Jingo are irritating and Anoke is silly); and this exaggerated subplot of religion is never funny and does not work. The special effects are only reasonable and the set decoration is good. My vote is five.Title (Brazil): "Tropas Estelares 3" ("Starship Troopers 3")

Not good...could have been much better

If you are expecting action and CGI on par with the original, pass this film by.If you like a b-movie plot, actors, one-liners, and action then you might enjoy this film. The religious overtones get a bit overbearing at the end, almost to the point of stupidity (overlaying a gun while the Lord's Prayer is being said? Come on...).Casper Van Dien is back as John Rico and is as cheesy as ever (that's one of the film's saving points, though). The new Sky Marshall is pretty fun to watch, especially when he sings. The CGI is actually quite bad. Considering the above average CGI in ST2, I don't see why there was this step back. My main gripe is the last battle with the Mech Suits. That really could have been an awesome fight, but the film makers decided to put it at night and use crappy overlays and horrendous CG (seriuosly, I think I've seen better effects on my N64).Overall, if you can look past the terrible CGI, you might enjoy what this film has to offer. But you will most likely be thinking about how much BETTER it could have been...

Failure. Epic failure.

This. Movie. Sucks. So. Damn. Hard.Where do I even BEGIN?! First off, it's pretty clear when they have the extras re-cast in different scenes. The special effects are a joke.Oh yeah, and I find the religious angle downright offensive, and it doesn't take a lot to offend me. It's such an overt Athiest advert I'm surprised they didn't put 'In memory of Madelyn O'Hare' at the end.The dialog is also really terrible... If they're not overacting they're underacting, nothing in between. Even Van Diem can't seem to resurrect the old Rico's spark. The captain chick is a really annoying bucket of ass... She's more full of cruel retorts than she is of reason or command ability.Oh yeah, and did I mention THEY RECYCLE THE SAME SET THREE TIMES FOR DIFFERENT SETTINGS?! AUGH this movie sucks! And another thing, why, on that GIANT starship, did we only see two vehicles escape? No small escape pods, no nothing. Just one dropship and one bulbous escape pod.Seriously, if you want the Starship Troopers experience, watch the first and Roughnecks and nothing else.This. Movie. Sucks. ASS!

Not bad at all...heavily flawed though

It was refreshing to see they reclaimed much of what made the first movie great when making Marauder. The filmmakers tried to copy the 'style' of the first movie, and in some aspects they succeeded. In others however, they failed miserably. Nevertheless, I think they put a lot of effort into the movie this time. For example, the federation broadcasts of the first movie were fantastic because they carried a lot of atmosphere and had so much subtle irony included. In the third movie, I think they overshot the mark a bit. There are a lot of broadcasts and they do a good job helping to create the film's atmosphere, but they are so openly ironic and sometimes it's almost comedy. One would think the officials are crazy to actually air that (Strongly in contrary to the first movie's broadcasts). The story is not too bad. If you are willing to overlook some flaws you might find to like it. They even implemented a plot twist, which however was not very surprising at all. What I really could not stand was the needlessly exaggerated part about religion. The cast is OK, but I think the filmmakers should have brought more old characters. It was nice to see Rico again; however it seemed the main characters were actually Lola and Dix instead of him. Dix's character also acts unreasonable on several occasions. And I found that the cast for the sky marshal was good, he has some charisma.CGI effects are not very impressive. The bugs seem slightly worse animated than in 1997. So do explosions and the settings. The space ships and broadcasts look nice though. Music is very average. Aside from the great song in the first broadcast there are no themes that would grab your attention. You would expect much much more of Klaus Badelt after his Pirates of the Caribbean score. Maybe he should have oriented his work more on the fantastic score of Basil Poledouris from the first movie. There is perhaps just one tiny little moment towards the end, where you would notice the music as great support for the scene. But once you notice it, its already over. Writing this review I feel that there is actually not much positive to say in detail. But the composition of all these clearly average components is slightly better, because the atmosphere was right. It can be seen that this is in fact a Starship Troopers movie and not only shares the same name, as the second one did.

Good Movie If You Appreciate The First For What It Was

posted on 29 Jun 2009

First off, ten times better than the second movie.Second, don't watch this movie expecting modern movie special effects. View it from the perspective of watching a TV series and you'll easily be able to stomach the fact that it doesn't have the 100 million dollar budget of the first movie.Third, if you think this movie was a piece of crap, you probably didn't like the first. If you liked the first and still think this is a piece of crap, you're probably an immature movie watcher when it comes to appreciating the films. Neither of those reflect poorly upon you, it just means the movie is not for you. This movie is rife with flaws, there is no question. The acting is poor barring a few gleaming tidbits, the special effects are sub-par, and this movie will never be taken seriously. But Starship Troopers (the movie trilogy) is NOT supposed to be an epic masterpiece (that's what the book was for). Verhoeven made that evident from the outset of the first movie if you watch the director's commentary. Starship Troopers is satire, at its finest. Somewhat unfortunately, the first movie had enough action and explosions to attract an audience of blood-lusting idiots who are too daft to understand subtlety in cinema. Fortunately though, it was loaded with enough satire that people could see that even after the red haze cleared. The third Starship Troopers lacks the explosions (but not the gore) of the first, but definitely has the satire. Don't take the movie seriously and you'll enjoy it as much as you did the first one.Starship Troopers 3 is as clever as the first, provided you have the eye keen enough to look for the things in the third movie that made the original the cult classic that it is. Enjoy!

Is this a new genre? Christian Sci-Fi?

posted on 29 Jun 2009

I'm a huge fan of science fiction. And in my opinion, the first move was overall successful. What annoys me most is the cheap religious propaganda some writers/directors/producers try to inject in a decent sci-fi movie. This movie suffers from the same missionary fetish as "I Am Legend". Come on. Science fiction above all the genres should be clear from racial and religious discrimination/prejudice. Watch this movie if you are patient enough to endure a ridiculous attempt of brainwashing or if you are a hard core Starphip Troopers fan, but bare in mind that this is not the point Robert A. Heinlein would want his Hugo winning story to be taken to.

Great!

Right from the start of the film we know that we are really back in the universe from the first ST. No one else can write ST-verse like Neumeier. It's a shiny but a rotten world, with many tongue-in-cheek moments. You'll have to see MARAUDER a few good times to catch it all (for instance look at the titles in FedNets). Again Neumeier goes back to the social satire and a commentary on the "here and now" situations (War in Iraq, Bushism and anti-Bushism). The huge surprise here is...this movie is much more positive and strong on belief in the human race than the original one. Humanity has a chance of not becoming a swarm of bugs after all.The story goes two ways. The main story lines are that of Johnny Rico/Dix Hauser and the tale of the people lost on a distant planet, with Lola Beck/Sky Marshall Anoke being the leads. Both of these tales are interesting and surprising ones. They are the settings for the larger issues – especially religion and various takes on it. This is always a great subject for the characters to explore. First of all we find out that Johnny Rico somehow kept his sanity in the long years of war and developed a lot of heart. Last time we saw him, he was "a part of the grinder". Now he's a soldier with soul, a soldier who can't obey orders if they are not right or just. When I did the interview with Casper he said "Johnny is now a true warrior ." CVD skillfully shows that aspect in the movie. Van Dien is Johnny Rico and he owns the film. This performance alone makes the movie a must see. Dix Hauser (Boris Kodjoe) is by the book guy who learns that the mind is like a parachute and works well only if it's open. Good piece of acting by Kodjoe. Now on to the actors of the second story. Jolene Blalock creates a very feminine, sexy and strong character of Lola Beck. Lola Beck rules! She's cool, she has commanding skills, she's every troopers wet dream. This role is yet another example of the fact that Blalock is a "acting-chameleon" and can play totally different roles. She is an actress with a very wide range of acting skill. When you see Jolene you can be so blinded by her beauty that you may not notice how talented an actress she is. Luckily in TROOPERS 3 Jolene has a chance to play some really dramatic scenes. She has great chemistry with her partners especially with Dr. Wiggs (solid Danny Keogh) Bull (Stelio Savante in a top form), and Holly (the lovely Marnette Patterson). The little older, wiser generation is represent by two talented people: Amanda Donohoe and Stephen Hogan. I personally remember Donahoe for her role in "The Lair of the White Worm". It still is one of my fav movies. I'm sorry I couldn't get an interview with Miss Donahoe for our site. Maybe next time... Very talented English actor Stephen Hogan has a giant screen charisma and watching him on the screen is an absolute delight. He steals every scene he's in. All other actors make their characters memorable... from Cecile Breccia (Hi Cecile! You made Link Mannion both super sexy and tough, and the French accent was such a turn on ;-) to Joe Vaz as "Peace Terrorist" Elmo Goniff. The casting is tip top.The thing that was brought up on a lot of discussions are the effects in the movie. The question was always the same: With the a lot lower budget how can you compete with still state of the art/ageless visuals from Tippett Studio? It's a mission impossible, isn't it? Well, the answer is yes and no. I have to say these effects are very good especially if you think they are in the movie with a budget of 1/8 of the typical big summer blockbuster. There are more than 400 visual and special effects in this movie, they are wonderfully diverse and not a repetition by any means of the "movie magic" from the previous films. In STARSHIP TROOPERS 3: MARAUDER there is the ambitious amalgamation of wonderful miniature effects (The Scorpion Bug is amazing), CGIs and practical on-set effects. Sometimes it works remarkably, sometimes a bit less remarkably, but there are some amazing "instant classic" scenes (battle on Roku San, space sequences, Le Grande Finale, new Fed Nets etc…). Great work from the team lead by Robert Skotak. He did the impossible! Speaking as big fan of the original film and someone who invest a lot of heart and time for this franchise (I'm the creator of STARSHIP TROOPERS 3.NET) I can honestly say that STARSHIP TROOPERS 3: MARAUDER is a worthy sequel to the Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece. It has everything you've been counting for and more. Of course it's not a 100 million dollars follow up that some of us have dreamed of, but it's great anyway. The budget limitations didn't break the magic of ST.But the most important thing is: By this film Ed Neumeier proved that there is still a lot of life in the STARSHIP TROOPERS universe, that this world is still as fascinating as eleven years ago and still can be a great allegory to the current political situation. There is a lot more to explore in ST-verse. Let's hope for more TROOPERS stories (the 4th movie, the TV series) in the future! Of course with Ed, Casper, Jolene and the rest of the gang on board!
