Yet another 70's tv show movie

posted on 26 Aug 2009

Like Charlies Angels before it and countless others, S&H takes a 30 minute plot, straight out of the tv series and stretches it into an hour and a half movie, give or take. And much like Charlie's angels it has its pluses and minuses. It has good action and, thanks to the inspired casting of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, it has some truly funny points. I especially liked the scene with the yacht and the car. However, it really is just another retread of 70 tv pablem. Still, good for a lark, and hey, Vince Vaughn was great. and hey, you never know, we might get John Lequizamo and Steve Buscemi in CHiPs I'd give it 8 out of 10.

Simply fantastic

What a fantastic film! I am truly shocked that other reviewers hated it!I didn't stop laughing all the way through. Often in comedies, the trailers show all the funny jokes, but in Starsky & Hutch the jokes didn't stop.I did feel old though when I was one of the few people to laugh when Owen Wilson got his guitar out! I am ashamed to admit that I did buy one or two of David Soul's records. It was good to see the original Starsky and Hutch in a cameo at the end! I wonder if we'll see David Soul in Salem's Lot when that comes out on TV - I certainly hope so!I'm a great fan of Ben Stiller and this movie didn't disappoint.

Thanks To Cast And Crew

After being a loyal fan of the television show since it premiered, I wasn't expecting this movie to be as great as it was. But the people who brought this movie to life did a terrific job of bringing the Starsky and Hutch tradition back in grand style. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson have a genuine chemistry that is very reminiscent of Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul. I was glad this movie wasn't done over the top with the special effects and advanced technology that was available to the production team today. As a person who grew up in the seventies this film stayed true. And thanks to bringing the Gran Torino back, Starsky and Hutch would not be the same without that car. If anyone loved the show I think they will love this movie. It's done with a style and grace that was loyal to the original in so many ways without doing it the same exact way. Thanks to all involved.

forget the original

This movie is not your parent's Starsky and Hutch. This movie is more reminiscent of the silly comedies that Wilson and Stiller have brought us since they met filming the cable guy. It's fast driving through the plot, the characters are well developed, and the comedy is allright, kind of borderline strange as per. I don't think many people could have pulled this off as a comedic team, but Stiller/Wilson do, and update it well enough for the current times. Don't go see this expecting to see anything other than absurd, strange comedy with drugs, women, and Owen Wilson's fantastic comedic timing. See it for Snoop Dogg's Huggy Bear. See it for Will Farrell's cameo. Go see this movie with a free mind on anything regarding the TV show, or else you'll probably end up not liking it as much.

Run, don't walk, away from this film!

I will never see another film by Todd Phillips ever again, from themiserably overrated OLD SCHOOL to this aimless waste of talent. There's about 25% of a decent satirical remake of the old TV show;the rest is nothing but misfires. 2 Hours out of my life that I willnever see again, but it seemed like a lifetime. Of all the interestingfilms in release, why did my wife have to pick this one? The bestpart of this film was the cameo by the original team, who both havebeen hit by personal tragedies, since the end of the TV series. You can't really blame Stiller and Wilson, though they must haveread the script before they signed up. Thumbs down, way down.

70's nostalgia

If you really, really liked the 70's, you'll like this movie. If you find the decade a kitschy, quirky, entertaining time, this is the movie for you. If you find the entire thing rather annoying as I do, it sucks. They try to make of the cliches in the original series by really playing them up, but only succeed in basically make them much worse in this movie. Instead of unintentional and in the background, they are constantly in your face, but no more entertaining. Owen Wilson needs a better agent, and I guess I just don't get the whole Ben Stiller thing. I liked him in There's Something About Mary, and in everything else he's just bad. Everyone makes a big deal about the chemistry in this film, but like everything else in it, it's just silly and cliched. In short, this movie is just a big turd and not worth the money or time to go see it.

Should have been better

****Mild SPOILERS***** I'm sure once you see the movie, you won't care.Shame on you, Starsky and Hutch makers. You really let the ball drop on thisone. You have too much talent on board to just pump out this drek. Stiller,Wilson( personally I think his hound dog one note act is completely over-rated, but still, a lot of people seem to like him, so who am I to judge), Vince, Will and Todd, how can that combination go wrong? Well, it did.It all starts with the script, and this script was garbage. Dumb, coke smuggling plot, a typical Starsky and Hutch episode, which would be fine if the movie was chalked full of jokes ( a la Old School, we forgave the messy script, because we were all doubled over in pain, laughing at Farrell with a dart in his neck). Stiller's got to quit it with the big dance off scenes. They're not funny. And maybe he should do a little research and find out how people really act on coke. Vince Vaughn I think phoned in this performance from overseas, cause they're was abit of delay in his comic timing. Honest to god, the more I think about it, the more I hate it. They're has been only one TV show that has made a nice transition to the big screen. And that is the Brady Bunch. And why? Satire. Satire people. It didn't take it self seriously. It embraced the genre but at the same time poked fun at it. Satire goes a long way if it's done right. And in S&H, it wasn't done at all. You know it's kind of sad, because this movie will probably make money, because it's got a great cast and a director with a proven track record ( although Road Trip is being lumped in with Old School as another great comedy, but it's not. Road Trip is one step above Porky's) and it will probably spawn a sequel with even less jokes and less plot (if it's possible) and we'll probably all go and see that too. And the cast and director with become big B.O. draws, and they'll get to produce even more schlock that'll we'll all go see and eventually complain about. Don't let this happen. Stop this vicious cycle now. Don't see this movie!!!!!! P.S. Please stop putting Snoop Dog in movies. The guy's a block of wood.Seriously, he's rancid. Just plain rancid. P.P.S. Where did they dig up those old coots at the end of the movie from. I hope they paid you boys a good fee, cause you looked like fools.

Stiller and Wilson are back again

Ben Stiller had four movies come out in six months and this one was the best. He teamed up with Owen Wilson and together they make a very funny team. Based on the popular 70's action show of the same name, Starsky and Hutch re teams Detectives David Starsky and Ken Hutchinson, this time played by long-time buddies Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. This "prequel" to the television show presents the origins of their long running partnership, as they are thrown together on a case involving a shady entrepreneur (Vince Vaughn). Stiller makes up for Envy and brings out the laughs with a great cast. I never saw the series but I am willing to bet that the movie is a lot better and this is more of a parody of the series. The story was funny sure it was nothing new but they still make it work. Stiller and Wilson have a great backup cast in this including Vince Vaughn, Amy Smart, Jason Bateman, Juliette Lewis and Carmen Electra. They all bring humor into the movie and they play their roles well. Snoop Dog played his role decently but they could have found someone else to play Huggy Bear. Todd Phillips directs and he has made some funny comedies in the past including Old School and Road Trip. Vince Vaughn has moved on from being a serious actor to being a comedian and the transition worked in Old School and it works in this movie. The film is 100 minutes long so its hard to put in enough jokes to sustain its running time but for the most part the film is pretty entertaining. Rating 7/10 I recommend you see this movie if your looking for a good comedy or if your a fan of any of the stars.

FUNNIEST FILM SINCE BLAZING SADDLES

posted on 28 May 2009

Never a rough sequence. Never an error. Airtight and a laughter creator to the level of needing and ambulance during the film to check if excessive laughter had caused my spleen to burst. This movie will go down in history as one of the top ten best comedy films of all time. It is right up there with Animal House, Stripes, and Blazing Saddles. It is a blessing to have this much laughter in less than two hours when we live in a time, in our society, where terrorism, crime, and poor economic conditions tend to supersede our every thought. This film is quite possible the answer to all of our depressing questions about "How can we possibly escape our dismal world for even a short time."Starsky & Hutch is Todd Phillips masterpiece that can that can be summed up in one word: BULLETPROOF.

Red Torina Returns

The original '70's TV series "Starsky & Hutch" was one of my favorite shows at that time. Todd Phillips' revisionist "Starsky & Hutch" is a funny homage to the original series. With the genius comic pairing of Ben Stiller (Dave Starsky) and Owen Wilson (Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson), this "Starsky & Hutch" is a straight up comedy with action. The original S&H was played as a straight police action drama. In retrospect, it was unintentionally funny, much like other fondly remembered '70's action dramas. Director Phillips along with co-screen writers John O'Brien and Scott Armstrong fashioned a basic cop-buddy movie, with more of an emphasis on '70's culture and atmosphere satire. That is is big target, be it men with perms, or discos. I enjoyed "Starsky and Hutch" and laughed a whole lot. S&H teams Starsky and Hutch on a case involving the trafficking of untraceable cocaine by cartel magnate, Reese Feldman (the slippery evil and whacked, Vince Vaughn). This is a simple story, in the loosest possible sense. With S&H it is the experience, rather than the feeble plot that matters. Stiller and Wilson maybe the great comedic team of this generation. I had seen them before in "Zoolander", and they were good then. Stiller is a the solid straight man playing the by the book, very anal Starsky. Wilson is the free spirited, fringe legal, Hutch. The characters seem reversed from the the TV series. I recall Hutch being the hip, health conscience, straight laced one, and Starsky was more the slob, and the less stiff of the pair. Oh well, this works regardless. Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear is genius casting. Snoop brings the regal bearing as a "pimp". An uncredited Will Ferrell as Big Earl (in the big pen) is drop dead funny. Big Earl (Ferrell) has some information about the cocaine, and a profound attraction for Hutch. This is hysterical. Phillips being the brilliant director that he is, weaves into the story stunning and gorgeous '70's style cheerleaders including Carmen Electra, Amy Smart, and Brande Roderick. In perhaps the best scene of the movie, Starsky and Hutch are questioning an undressing Heather (Roderick) in the locker room about Big Earl. Starsky asks "How much do you weigh?" Heather questions the relevance. Starsky says "...I'm the professional here... Just answer the question." S&H has the comedic talent of Stiller and Wilson, a funny psycho evil villain in Vaughn, and hot cheerleaders. This is not a stunningly dramatic masterpiece; however, it is a great way to be thoroughly entertained for a hour and a half.

Love it!

I am a child of the seventies and wasn't disappointed by this treatment of one of my fave TV shows.Ben Stiller is truly funny and Owen Wilson is truly gorgeous (and funny). There are lots of references to the original film and its a really affectionate tribute, but at the same time it stands up on its own as a highly enjoyable film. I was a bit disappointed that Hutch has been rewritten as a bent cop (I don't remember that being the case in the original) but it kind of works in the overall scheme of things. The funniest scene is right at the start where he gets caught on an armed raid at a bookies. This is a great film, far better than the remakes of other seventies classics like Charlie's Angles. Please can we have some more...

The film adaptation of Starsky & Hutch certainly isn't short on soul.

Rating: **** (out of *****)It's a simple fact that when you adapt a classic TV show for the screen (an idea which Hollywood's become increasingly fond of doing for the last ten years, at least), you've got to do it properly. The film version has got to feel more like a film and less an extended version of the TV show. Even if it ends up like more of the latter, you've got to at least try something a little different. Just think of how many adaptations have failed or disappointed over the years, like the cringe-worthy The Flintstones or the flat-out awful The Avengers. But some have succeeded, like the first Charlie's Angels film and now, Starsky & Hutch.I can guarantee that both the show's devotees and general viewers (like myself) will be entertained from start to finish. For starters, the 1970's setting has been maintained. No fancy technology here, sir (although the slight casualness of the film making has allowed continuity errors to slip in – I think I spotted one). The cars, music, clothes and hairstyles of the time are very much in place, and, unlike the setting of The Wedding Singer, they aren't hammered into us. The film has too much soul for that. This is a prequel to the show, showing how Dave Starsky (Ben Stiller) and Ken Hutchinson, aka Hutch (Owen Wilson) come together and handle their first assignment; an attempt to get to the bottom of a drug smuggling affair. They have the help of several acquaintances, including the reliable Huggy Bear (a very funny Snoop Dogg). I've heard that on TV, Starsky & Hutch generally played it straight. If so, its most loyal fans are in for a surprise. This version is completely tongue-in-cheek, just like Charlie's Angels. And it hardly fails to make you laugh. That's not odd at all, though, once you see that Road Trip and Old School director Todd Phillips is at the helm. His tone has to be slightly milder here though (in other words, no toilet humour); as a result, he sometimes has to look for other ways to make the audience to laugh. That said, his "trademarks" are certainly visible in one or two scenes. He's even called back a couple of his Old School colleagues (Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn), and this works very well. (The appearance of Road Trip's Amy Smart as a cheerleader does him no harm either.)In fact, I can't fault the casting at all. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson have worked together multiple times in the past, and it's very easy to see that. Their buddy chemistry never feels forced for one second. (Indeed, original stars Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul, who cameo in the film, were happy to see Stiller and Wilson as their former alter-egos.) Sometimes Wilson even steals the limelight from Stiller.Perhaps in a matter of months I'll think, `Maybe I overrated the film.' I mean, it doesn't seem very resonant, does it? But right now I certainly recommend it, because it's probably the most mindless fun you can have at the cinema at this moment in time. I'll now be watching re-runs of the show with much interest, and I wouldn't be surprised if you'll want to do the same after you see this.

Typical Raunchy, Irreverent Fun

posted on 04 Apr 2009

"Starsky And Hutch" follows in the tradition of outrageous, detective buddy comedies, with established comics Ben Stiller (in his signature hapless, agitated role) and Owen Wilson (in his signature light-hearted, genial, braggart role) teaming up to accomplish a drug raid against Stiller/Wilson "pal/nemesis" Vince Vaughn at the head of the 1970s Los Angeles cartel. The result of this premise is primarily a riot: Stiller and Wilson's comradery (and lack thereof) provides much enjoyment and whim to their respective parts, and there is just enough dynamite action to propel the film where amicable, funny dialogue is expired. Despite this being an effective, enjoyable action-comedy, there are many elements that are amiss. The premise and the personality of the film is hardly original, and one is frequently reminded of previous buddy-cop flicks (48 Hours, Showtime, Blue Streak, etc. come to mind), and previous Stiller outings which directly resemble his unvarying characters in whatever films he partakes in. Snoop Dogg's "ghetto, profane" random appearances are sorely unwelcome and unpleasant to the film's upbeat premise (perhaps the film didn't think the collaboration of Stiller and Wilson was "cool" enough, so they had to include a "notorious gangster" in the mix). Despite being far from anything special or even remarkable, and entirely deviating (from my understanding) from the homicide drama of its '70s sitcom inspiration, "Starsky and Hutch" is at the very least an amusing, entertaining and zany reprieve from the prevalent field of flops and misfires that consumed cineplexes this spring, and hats off to Stiller and Wilson for collaborating as a fresh and funny team that is most appreciated in the increasingly popular market of "buddy comedies". *** out of ****

I'm a bit embarrassed that I even saw it, but I'll see just about anything, especially if I can see it in a theater. But I should have known! I hated Todd Phillips's Old School. It was sloppy in ever way possible. The guy knew neither how to direct nor write. But the commercials for this film made me laugh, and I love the chemistry between Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson; their bit at the Oscars last week cracked me up. But, damn, if Phillips didn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he is one of the worst directors in Hollywood right now. The guy has no clue how to construct a joke! If you don't trust me and need proof, then, please, do check out this piece of crap. There are any number of funny situations that are set up, but there is hardly ever pay-off, and the few times when Phillips does come through he doesn't come through nearly enough. For every laugh, and there is a small handful of them, almost anyone on the street could have re-written the joke to be funnier. The only thing that was great was the stunt driving, but I'm probably one of the three people who still go to movies who doesn't go to the movies for that. 4/10.

Thankfully, Starsky & Hutch owes more to the Brady Bunch/Galaxy Quest breed of TV spoof -- the fond homage -- rather than the soulless rip-off that was I Spy or S.W.A.T. On top of that, S&H forgoes the big screen remake approach and manages to imbue this movie with a kind of intimate, small screen charm all its own. There's not much in the SPFX department -- a little green screen on a lizard's tail maybe -- just stunt driving and disco dancing and coo l characters. It occurred to me that this sort of 70's, character-based TV has given way to the "ensemble drama" where the characters are secondary and the formula is the star. Hence you can set CSI or Law and Order in any city and serve up a variety of interchangeable casts to populate your formula. To make it palatable to an audience who doesn't give a damn whether this remake is anything like the original, the char acters have been polarized and exaggerated to turbo-charge the humor. Paul Mic hael Glaser's intense David Starsky, in Ben Stiller's hands is "Mr Furiou s", a by-the-book cop struggling against the legacy of his Supercop mother. Owen Wilson takes Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson a few steps further along the continuum of laid-back, nordic detachment, becoming a Wilson-esque drifter who comfortably straddles both sides of the law. Thus he becomes the perfect pacifier for his frenetic partner. All the original elements are present and exaggerated. The on-screen chemistry between the leads, the innocent and endearing homoerotica, the cool Ford Gran Torino and its balletic skid turns, the busty cheerleaders and the smooth and charming, leisure-suited villains. Played straight down the middle, all the humor emerges from the guileless seriousness of it all, the charming simplicity of a more innocent time.In an age before AIDs, Terrorism and political correctness, Starsky and Hutch tough talk, rough house and sleep their way through a daisy chain of leads and informants, on the trail of a massive shipment of artificial coke , which mimics the real stuff in effect, but is undetectable to police labs or sniffer dogs. Starsky and Hutch take their polar-opposite characters into each new situation, and their infamous buddycop chemistry manages to keep them stumbling along in vaguely the right direction. The unlikely tableaus -- scenes like the holsters and handtowels, the attractive informant disrobing during her interview, the undercover mime artists and the ridiculous disguises are mostly lifted directly from the original series and tweaked only a little for laughs. Starsky still doesn't like Hutch eating in the Torino and Hutch still lives in his little Venice villa with his indian hemp throw rugs and healthy milkshakes. Stiller especially has worked hard on his little Starsky-esque codifiers, the bow-legged swagger, the hyperactive twitchiness, right down to the I Ching necklace and silver pinkie ring -- little touches that 95 percent of the audience will never recognize. Starsky & Hutch is populated by the usual Stiller/Wilson family singers. Vince Vaughn is delicious perfection as the bad guy/drug-dealer/family man and Wil Ferrel is the ad-libbed Saturday Night Live skit character with eccentric sexual tendencies and a penchant for Dragons.Out of our Easter weekend audience I think most were in their twenties or below, and so David Soul's one and only pop hit, "Don't Give up on us, Baby" has never been played in their lifetime. And yet our audience seemed to "get" the fondly self-referential humor and ridiculous situations, if all the guffawing was anything to go by. There was a group of teenaged girls behind us who choked a n d hyperventilated so much during the Wil Ferrell "interrogation" scene I thought the y'd have to be put on oxygen. As a huge fan of the original series I should have found all this insulting, predictable and groan-enducing, but instead it was nostalgic and endearing. As much as I love specials effects and action-packed blockbusters, I realized I miss these sorts of characters.Of today's crop, only Monk is carrying the banner for quirky, character-based charm.

I liked it

I go to the movies to be entertained. This movie, although it didn't resemble the original enough for me (Starsky and Hutch didn't act like these new guys). Hutch used to be the more serious guy, and Starsky was the "I don't care" kind of guy. Even though, there were many differences, there was still plenty of jokes at the original shows expense (like the way Starsky always runs with his hands flying around) I thought it was a fun movie. Anyone who used to drive a muscle car can appreciate the Starsky characters obsession with his car. (and I'm not talking about these new rubber-band powered import cars)People need to stop taking movies so seriously, and learn to relax ans enjoy the show.

An unoriginal and sometimes boring adaptation, but it definitely has its strong comedic moments.

STARSKY & HUTCH (2004)THE GOOD:--I'm a fan of both Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller, I find their comedic performances very entertaining. I liked them both a lot in this film too, especially Stiller, who is infused with comedic energy. Wilson seems like an all-round cool guy and I like his style, but he is playing the same character over and over, perhaps its time to get out of the buddy comedy genre for this actor. Snoop Dogg was also great in this movie, I found him very funny and added a hilarious mainstream effect to the film. It's always exciting to see Juliette Lewis acting, and though she doesn't give her best performance in her one-dimensional role in this film, she looks beautiful and is fun. --"Starsky & Hutch" was told to me to be both groovy and hilarious, and it definitely has factors of these two. The movie is definitely 'groovy' and has style, capturing the essence of olden-day buddy comedies and adding little modern touches as well. As far as the film being hilarious, well, I wouldn't say that it was THAT funny but it definitely had its moments. Will Ferrell's extended cameo was an absolute riot (Wilson and Stiller doing it like dragons was just classic) and the scene with the naked girl being interviewed by the two detectives was pretty damn funny. This film isn't exactly memorably funny but it definitely has its comedic highlights, and is worth seeing for these few hysterical scenes.THE BAD:--Aside from being based on a classic TV show, "Starsky & Hutch" pretty much feels like your run-of-the-mill detective movie. The film is totally predictable and the mystery doesn't have much of a mysterious factor behind it. The plot allows for some well-constructed jokes but other than that, it's just your average buddy comedy. And with an ending that is totally ripped off from "2 Fast 2 Furious", by the way (though the car going in the water was pretty hilarious).--Surprisingly for a Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson effort, "Starsky & Hutch" runs quite slowly. Perhaps it was the element of predictability in the film, or maybe its that simply not enough chances were taken? Too many instances in the movie had missed opportunities. Huggy Bear's (Dogg) discovery of the baddies plan was underdeveloped, and the typical break-up-and-become-friends-again subplot between Stiller and Wilson doesn't work at all and is done in a stale and effortless manner. Not a whole lot of the cast have chemistry (aside from Stiller and Wilson of course), the villain is rather seen-it-all-before - the movie knows its audience and what they're expecting and doesn't go outside that. If it had been a little more original, I would've liked it a lot more.RATING:6/10 - Perhaps this one is more suited to an older audience who watched the show when they were younger. I personally didn't see much special in the movie, it was an OK way to pass 90 minutes, but its nothing terribly innovative.IF YOU LIKED THIS MOVIE I RECOMMEND:Meet the Parents (8/10) The Royal Tenenbaums (8/10) Shanghai Knights (7/10) Stuck On You (2/10) Zoolander (7/10)

Don't Give Up on Us, Baby

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are "Starsky & Hutch" in this 2004 take-off of the 1970s buddy cop TV series that had special appeal to pre-pubescent girls. Angry Captain Doby (Fred Williamson) is back as is Huggy Bear (Snoop Dog). Even the striped-tomato red car is back. In this film, Starsky is straight as an arrow and Hutch is not above stealing money out of perp's wallet or committing a robbery and claiming he was undercover at the time. The two become reluctant partners and go after a drug dealer (Vince Vaughn). There are many great '70s songs, discos, and Afros that go from one side of the street to the other. There is also no lack of S&H's famous undercover characterizations and disguises. And the ending will bring a big smile to your face. Owen Wilson singing "Don't Give Up on Us, Baby," David Soul's lighter than air hit tune, was a highlight of the film for me.Interestingly, the characters seem to swap personalities when compared to the series, where Hutch was the concerned straight arrow and Starsky was the more laid back rule-breaker.As a bit of trivia, Soul moved to England and began doing a lot of theater, appearing as Jerry Springer in "Jerry Springer - the Opera" not so long ago. He has long championed many humanitarian causes. Glaser, of course, became a director and an AIDS activist, his wife being Elizabeth Glaser, who lost her life to the disease along with their daughter. Back in the '70s, both men received a lot of publicity for their various demands and star attitudes. Life has a way of straightening out your priorities, I guess. If you remember the series and the '70s, this is a fun film, and if you don't, I suspect it's fun anyway. If you are a die-hard, serious fan of the original series, this isn't the movie for you if you're planning on taking it seriously.

Starsky and Hutch is an awesome spoof.

Starsky and Hutch is a funny spoof that stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as two streetwise cops. The story is about Starsky(Ben Stiller) and Hutch(Owen Wilson) and they are the odd couple of the police department as they become partners and have to trap down an illegal Steroid ring. Now I was not a big fan of Starsky and Hutch the series and I was convinced to watch it by my cousin and I would have to say I am glad as This movie is a very funny Frat movie(as it also has Will Ferell and Vince Vaughn just to name a few.) and does a good job at making the old TV show a movie. Overall I think this movie is very funny and worth watching even if you have not seen the TV show and I think it deserves a rating of 84%. So watch it and you will not be disappointed.
