Disappointing

posted on 31 Aug 2009

Streets of Blood starts out promising enough, as it tells the tale of two cops (Val Kilmer and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson) in a post-Hurricane Katrina landscape trying to regain control of the drug underworld they police. Coming off as more of an uncensored episode of any prime-time TV cop drama than a real crime saga, Streets of Blood features plenty of shaky camerawork, and even shakier accents. As much as I love Val Kilmer, he's just so stale here, and the fact that his accent keeps changing up doesn't help matters either. Sharon Stone is more than guilty of this as well, as 50 Cent ends up putting in the best performance of the whole show here. Still, Streets of Blood manages to be oddly compelling for most of its running time despite its many flaws, and I guess that in itself makes it at least worth a look for fans of Kilmer or gritty cop dramas.

Puns aside, what a disaster this film was

posted on 31 Aug 2009

Knowing this film centers itself on a police department trying to regain control of the drug trade in the midst the Katrina aftermath, it was fitting that it can be called a disaster. From the funny accents that disappear, to the horrible camera work, to the 3D style effects of flashbacks, to the stop-style editing (the film freezes prior to each fade to black cut), to that horrendous ending - all made for another frustrating outing for Kilmer.

Kilmer plays a boy scout drug cop fighting the bad guys on the streets and in the FBI. His partner is 50 Cent (sadly enough his best role to date) who cannot seem to decide if he is good or bad. Michael Biehn plays the FBI agent trying to spice things up (failing miserably) and Sharon Stone (scarily unrecognizable) plays the department shrink who violates probably every rule there can be - including having four different accents in the same film. Our plot meanders from Katrina to several years after as our corrupt characters kill and steal their way through their PD work. One memorable moment is when Kilmer and 50 Cent are going to shoot 20 armed guys in an abandoned school, Val gave the exact same speech from Tombstone in the same accent - deja vu.

There are no special features, bad film quality and sound that is intermittently mixed at best. I was hoping for more as this film made the promo posters, and I really tried to give it a solid shot, but after attempting to overlook the laundry list of issues I then got to that last shot - literally - and was appalled they ended the film that way.

Gave it one more star for the Katrina aftermath footage they included in the credits, heartbreaking as always.

I live in New Orleans and I'm a huge 50 cent fan so I got this movie and it SUCKED!!!! The movie didnot portray New Orleans as it really is in fact not even close. The story and acting were total garbage

One of the worst movies I've seen this year

posted on 31 Aug 2009

The only reason I picked this movie up was because of some of the familiar names in it [Val Kilmer, Sharon Stone, Michael Biehn, admittedly not A-listers, but nevertheless], and also the fact that it is set in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. The movie begins with actual news footage of New Orleans after Katrina wreaked havoc on it. The story - a couple of months after Katrina, New Orleans is portrayed as a city crippled by drug wars, with a bunch of cops, both crooked and good, and also the FBI trying to set the city right. Val Kilmer and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson play the good cops who are trying hard to fight back against the bad cops. Michael Biehn plays an FBI agent who is also in on the action, and Sharon Stone portrays a police shrink trying to get into the minds of both the good and bad cops.

Sounds pretty straightforward right? Well, there is so much wrong with this movie that it really defies explanation - there is no fleshing out of characters in this movie, the characters are all one-dimensional, good cops are good and bad cops are bad. The acting is below average, and Sharon Stone is totally wasted in her role, with an annoying and less than credible Cajun accent to boot, which she sheds and uses at will. Val Kilmer seems totally unconvincing in his role, and just appears to be spouting his lines with no conviction whatsoever [watch "Felon" instead for a great acting job by Kilmer], and "50 Cent" just seems lost.

The action seems to be there just for the sake of it, and the violence is gratutious - there is simply no rhyme or reason for some of the scenes in this movie. The cinematography is awful, with out of place shots that do nothing to help viewers figure the plot. This would be a great example of what not to do in filmmaking class!Oh, there are no extras either. Final verdict - awful mess of a movie. I'm glad it was just a rental. Skip it!

Fat Val Is a Cajun

Fat Val gets a payday and stoops to working with bucktoothed non acting Fitty Cent. Sharon Stone still looks good but doesn't have much to do. This movie is really crappy. The story of corruption in New Orleans and the post Katrina atmosphere would be a good backdrop for a story but this is garbage.

This Film Couldda Been A Contenda!

posted on 31 Aug 2009

OMG! What has happened to Val Kilmer & Sharon Stone!? This film is one of the worst written I have seen in decades. If the story had been written by someone really familiar with New Orleans and the street crime there, and directed by a well-known director, it could have had legs. The actors are first-rate and do their best with what they were given. There is a murder every minute and a half. It borders on pornography. The women (except Ms. Stone) are all drug addicts, prostitutes, and worse. Hispanics and Blacks don't fare much better. Fitty is a good actor who takes your eyes away from Kilmer, if that's possible, in all his scenes. I would like to see this story re-made with a better script, better director, better editing. And yes, without Val Kilmer and Sharon Stone. I really hope these two wonderfully talented actors find better scripts in the future. They are long overdue for a really good role. Their talent has been totally wasted in the last few years on films that are almost unwatchable. This one was the worst I've seen in a long, long time.

Better than I expected

In a post Katrina New Orleans, law and order is not the rule. This movie chronicles the efforts of a basically good cop trying to free The streets of New Orleans from the drug dealers that are overrunning it. There are other cops that are not so clean, but how far can you bend the law trying to do your job before it finally breaks. While the tactics used are sometimes less than socially acceptable, the intention of the best of them is drug free streets. When the FBI decides to investigate them, these officers have to more closely follow the law in their search for the head of the drug dealing. Val Kilmer was great in this movie and Sharon Stone finally played a character that was finally likable. She was eloquent and acted her age. While this wasn't the best movie I have seen recently, I really enjoyed watching it and would recommend it to others.

Has Potential, but Is Very Confused

posted on 16 Aug 2009

In New Orleans after the Katrina, the partner of Detective Andy Devereaux (Val Kilmer) is found dead and he teams up with Stan Green (50 Cent) that becomes his new partner. During the investigations, am undercover DEA agent is murdered by two dirty police officers, and the psychologist Nina Ferraro (Sharon Stone) has successive interviews with Andy, Stan and the two detectives. Meanwhile, the FBI also investigate the corruption in the police force leaded by Agent Brown (Michael Biehn)."Streets of Blood" is a police story that has potential, but fails since it is very confused. The theme of corruption in the police is also interesting, but the messy screenplay of this movie ruins the story. The camera and the cinematography are poor and the edition of the DVD is awful with a terrible framing. Sharon Stone is unrecognizable. My vote is five.Title (Brazil): "Ruas de Sangue" ("Streets of Blood")

What doesn't kill me...

I really liked this one. Surprisingly this movie could turn all it's disadvantages to a benefits. For example, movie is really cheap - hand camera and almost all shooting was made on real streets . And because of that it looks much more realistic and atmospheric than all "Training Day" clones. The plot is a mess, it is very hard to understand who are the heroes and villains, but this only add realism to this movie. All character are bad (like in noir movies of 50th). Actors didn't do anything special but because of that they look really believable. Val Kilmer is playing cop who never took bribes but constantly brakes laws, makes illegal searches and plants evidences to get drug dealers or simply kills them. But despite of it he is a man of strong principles. His own principles. 50 Cent is playing his partner (I must say I hate 50 cent, since he is a disgrace in music, but in this movie he actually had buff down and looked pretty decent) who torn by Kilmer's methods but always covering his back and secretly stealing money from dead dealers when he had a chance. And it is really hard to understand who is even worse cops or FBI. As I say, what really made this film special in my eyes among dozens of Training Day clones, this movie feels real. And because it felt real all it's disadvantages looks insignificant. And for everyone who felt this way, must especially enjoy the ending

Kilmer, Stone and Biehn are back!

I really enjoyed this movie. Val Kilmer, Sharon Stone and Michael Biehn really did a fine job and its good to see them all back in great form! Val Kilmer and Michael Biehn already established their on screen chemistry in Tombstone; and they followed through on this film. I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I have not enjoyed many Kilmer or Stone movies lately, but this one has put them back on the fast track map in my opinion. The story covered the post Katrina element; and the way the streets were thereafter. Also the polices role in the rapidly falling city. There were armed gangs everywhere calling the shots and some armed gangs of cops too; but can you blame them? Two thumbs up and two toes!

Did the Job for a great movie night!

"Guy's like Andy and me, were all that stands between people like you and the end of the motherfucking world" strong movie, good ending!Didn't even know this was half a rapper flick but it did the job for a great movie night.the movie delivers a nice break in the action with the moments before the action starts again, not really for kids though. I would say for the swearing and nudity, it was acceptable for the feel of realism in the movie.the movie shows real footage of the new Orleans disaster and gets you hooked from the start!i would definitely recommend this movie to all the rapper fans and all the people who normally hate the rapper scene because this movie will prove that it is possible to keep the story line on top and the rap second that by the way makes up for some good soundtracks............................enjoy the movie!

I wasn't excited about seeing this film at all, especially since they cast 50 cent who cannot act at all it was the same in righteous kill i couldn't take him seriously as an actor even though i did like get rich or die trying.I would say this was a low budget production it certainly looked like it from what i saw because the camera work was terrible and the director is virtually unknown,i probably would have turned it off if val kilmer wasn't in it cause he can be good, and for Sharon stone i think her career in top Hollywood productions are over.To end my summary it just seemed like a extended episode of some crime series show but what can u expect from a straight to DVD movie.I give this 4 out of 10 stars.

Worth a look on cable

Val Kilmer plays a cop who in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, discovers his partner dead. It transpires that he may have been murdered. Hooking up with a new partner (Curtis 50 Cent Jackson, who has turned into a solid actor) he begins a decent into to a criminal underworld with ties to the New Orleans police. Good, little action film is the sort of thing to fill a slow weekend afternoon. The action is good, the performances serviceable and the plot interesting enough to hold your interest. Certainly the opening sequences that take place in the flooded city grabbed me enough that I wanted to see where the rest of the film went. Is it something you'd want to buy on DVD or pay for a rental? probably not, but as something to catch on cable (where I'm guessing it will find a home on SPIKE of FX) its worth your time, if not a bowl of popcorn.

This flick can't quite deliver...

I saw this movie because I was interested in the plot and the cast. The "dirty cops" premise is lately becoming an exploitation, to mind come "Training day", "Dark blue", "Narc", and "Dirty". Unfortunately all these are far superior than this mess. The cinematography is nothing special, sometimes OK, sometimes awful. The story is quasi-complicated and fails to bring any tension whatsoever. The acting is not bad, but nothing special either. Val Kilmer, Sharon Stone and Barry Shabaka Hennley have little to work with. Biehn is pretty enjoyable. To me the biggest surprise was 50 cent - he wouldn't win any award for his acting here, but let's be honest here, if I didn't knew he wasn't an actor but a gangsta-rapper I would have never guessed it. His character is supposed to be torn apart between right and wrong, but we don't really feel for him or never do we really see his inner struggle. This is however due to bad writing and is not Jackson's fault. He is not worse than any of the other actors in the movie, this could be due to the thin story, but still he does OK, no complaints here. Of course to all who know something about 50 cent, fans or haters, it is hilarious to hysterical to watch him run around dressed as a patrol cop. The dialogue is average. Now the action on the other hand, if not on par with films as "Heat", "Ronin", or even Michael Bay's flicks is actually quite well executed. The viewer is never confused who is shooting at whom and why, no guns firing 100000000 bullets without reloading either. The ending doesn't make much sense. The editing is good, no MTV-style quick cuts. Overall it is just a movie to kill some time with, but don't expect anything above average. If You are interested in the cast feel free to watch it.

terrible movie

First, being from the south, I hate it when actors try to have a southern accent. The whole movie felt like a low budget film. Now I think it was to be released as a major movie but got leaked to the internet. I have always liked Val Kilmer and he was o.k. not his best acting by far, and Sharon Stone looked good for her age. curtis jackson is terrible. He cannot act, I could barely understand a word he was saying, did he get his teeth capped? I'm glad the movie got leaked to the net. I would have been upset if I had paid 8.00 bucks to see this movie, right now i'm out 4.00 and two hours of my time. Don't waste your time seeing this movie and please directors, next time you are casting a movie; don't cast a thug with no acting ability.

Val Kilmer & Curtis Jackson?? Jim Morrison & 50 Cent??

Yet another film made bad by horrible casting choices. Seriously, how can you expect to sellout movie theaters casting Val Kilmer and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as your lead roles? To be honest, when I first heard of about this film I was surprisingly excited to see it. I've always liked Val Kilmer and thought this could actually be good. But of course the excitement didn't last long. This film is full of drawn out suspense, horrible acting splashed with horrible Louisiana accents and my favorite part of any film which is getting lost in the story. That said the 6 stars I gave for this film are strictly on the basis of its suspense aspect and any director having the kahunas to put 50 cent in their film should get just a little credit.
