Funny and touching

posted on 31 Jul 2009

(A few spoilers) Another Farrelly Brothers' movie regarding people overcoming physical limitations excels due to effective performances from Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear, and a hilarious self-parody from Cher. Damon & Kinnear get the slapstick in while getting across that they truly care about each other, and want the other brother to be as happy as possible. Cher is really funny playing herself as the egotistical ("You told me center square!") villain, the only person really not in Bob & Walt's corner, but powerful enough to cause our heroes some strife. Some of the funniest and most touching scenes occur late in the film, after a successful operation separate Bob & Walt. They find they are still dependent on each other, emotionally and physically. This isn't as gut-busting funny as There's Something About Mary or Dumb And Dumber, but it's sort of a do-over of the disappointing Shallow Hal, with much better results.

Much like Jim carrey in the Truman Show

Much like Jim carrey in the Truman Show, people will go expecting more humor from the Bros. than they will get. It's almost a dramedy, and a flat one at that. I laughed until it hurt when I saw There's Something About Mary. I laughed exactly twice in this near Disney production.

Total Cult

In Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, the conjoined twins Bob (Matt Damon) and Walt (Greg Kinnear) have a successful fast food place and are beloved by the local citizens. The shy Bob has a crush on May (Wen Yann Shih), who corresponds with him through Internet, but does not know that he has a Siamese twin brother. Walt decides to move to Los Angeles and become an actor in Hollywood. Once in Hollywood, they meet April (Eva Mendes), an aspirant actress who lives in the same hotel and becomes their closest friend. Walt finds a spot in a TV series with Cher, an arrogant actress, who wants to break her contract with the network using Walt. However, they are not happy in Hollywood and miss their small town. 'Stuck On You' is a cult-movie, directed by the Farrelly brothers and having the participation of famous persons, such as Meryl Streep (uncredited), Cher and Griffin Dunne. The story is hilarious and it is grateful to see Cher making jokes with her behavior. Greg Kinnear has an excellent performance in the role of the Siamese brother of Matt Damon's character. My vote is eight.Title (Brazil): 'Ligado em Você' ( 'Connected to You')

Not the Farrelly Brothers' funniest

Stuck On You (2003) Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Eva Mendes, Wen Yann Shih, Ray "Rocket" Valliere, Cher, Pat Crawford Brown, Tommy Songin, Terence Bernie Hines, Seymour Cassel, Griffin Dunne, Jay Leno, Meryl Streep, Frankie Muniz, D: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly. One-joke comedy about Damon and Kinnear, a pair of conjoined twin brothers, leaving their burger joint in Martha's Vineyard so one of them can pursue his dream of Hollywood stardom. There, they run into a spoiled diva (Cher, mocking herself and her image) who hires them to co-star in her TV show. The Farrelly Brothers want us to embrace these "heroes" while at the same time be getting a laugh, but some scattered laughs aren't enough, especially when a thin setup like this feels so protracted. Some actors make cameos; decide for yourself to laugh or not. 118 min., rated PG-13. **

I thought this might be amusing but I was surprised to find this movie even funnier than my expectations. I kind of figured that Greg Kinnear could pull off the comedy-ham routine with little effort, but who would have thought serious, brooding Matt Damon could hold his own? While this film doesn't have all the hilarious gross-out schtick that "Something About Mary" had, it's still pretty funny. Cher nearly stole the show in her role. See it.

Not the best Farrelly comedy -- that honor belongs to MARY -- but passable entertainment. Greg Kinnear and Matt Damon play Massachusetts-based Siamese twins who manage to have a very active and productive life, running a diner, playing hockey and football, jogging, boozing, screwing, etc. etc. etc. They end up in Hollywood -- don't ask how -- and have a series of decidedly odd adventures in La-La Land before returning to their roots. Along the way, they meet a colorful assortment of characters, including Meryl Streep and Cher playing themselves, more or less. This is essentially a fable, or adult fairy tale, and cannot be taken seriously for one moment, although the underlying message of love and brotherhood is played straight enough. It's just not particularly funny, although it is well played by all. Several disabled people have small roles, but this ain't no FREAKS.

Comedy or moralising?

This story of conjoined twins who seek different careers has lots going for it without ever quite being a major smash. The story is well-enough acted, with matt Damon playing the quiet one, hawked along to Hollywood so his brother can have a go at acting. Cher is great as ‘herself' – a haughty actress, as is the mild-natured Streep and a number of other cameos; the script is just tight enough to pull it off without seeming cheesy or ridiculous, but the real triumph is perhaps the way all ‘normal' characters are lampooned (even down to the over-achieving wheelchair-bound agent) but only the conjoined twins are ‘normal'. A pleasant comedy, but not quite outstanding.

Better than the everyday-comedy

STUCK ON YOU is the last instalment from the Farrelly-brothers that's been making some really crazy comedies threw the years. Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear stars as two brothers that's attached together and has been all life, well..and this isn't really that a problem for the two guys, but the problems starts showing up when they go to Hollywood...STUCK ON YOU were pretty funny yes but nothing special about it. The whole idea is pretty unoriginal, cause making fun out of something that's really a problem for a lot of living people is a close to odd thing to do, but it keeps getting more and more normal. Well. You just have to see the cover and you understand that there's going to be some laughs in this movie, and there is really! And in the same time; there's not a problem in the world to get up with these ideas, so..I think the Farrelly's had a pretty easy job making fun out of this. Greg Kinnear is a sort of supporting actor but here he's into a full-on character and handles it pretty okay. Eva Mendes, the beauty plays a very stupid chick living on this Hollywood-motel and is the only actually, together with the owner himself and the two brothers.
Funny and who is the best brother? Well...Matt Damon, I don't like the guy, and he lost! Kinnear is the best! STARS: 3-4/5

no one saw this at the theater...

and now I know why. I would describe this movie as terrible. It wasn't funny, but the worst was it lasted nearly 2 hours. A supposed comedy about conjoined twins should run no longer than 90 minutes because you can't come up with enough plot for 2 hours. But, they decided to leave this at 2 hours and bore the viewer into a stupor. The only part I liked involved the b*tchiness of Cher. She's good at playing a diva.It was like they were trying to make a drama, considering how serious Kinear and Damon were, which is an obvious mistake since it's about conjoined twins and how one of them wants to make it as an actor in Hollywood.FINAL VERDICT: One of the worst films of 2003. It's not funny; don't watch it.

A touching movie, but it has a lack of comedy

Boy, Bobby and Peter Farrelly really are sweet at their core. Even in their big gross-out masterpieces like Kingpin and There's Something About Mary, there were complex and touching characters. They brought this part of their work to the surface with their last film, Shallow Hal, which wasn't very funny but carried with it a very good message. Their new film, Stuck on You, is a bit funnier than Shallow Hal (which was almost a drama), but the human story is very much on the surface again. Unfortunately, with their two latest movies, it feels like Bobby and Peter have completely lost their edge. Stuck on You has a few hilarious moments, but I walked away feeling slightly moved, but thinking very much that I would have preferred something more daring. I sure hope they go back to their gold material. I mean, sure, Kingpin and There's Something About Mary had one joke that missed for every four that worked, but I'd rather groan at a risky and ultimately cheap joke than slightly enjoy myself for two hours. If the Farrellys wanted to move over into fuller drama, they might be able to successfully. The emotional worth of Stuck on You is actually very worthy. To boot, the performances from most of the cast are brilliant. Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear play conjoined twins (who should, by definition, be identical, but never mind). The best performance in the film comes from Eva Mendes, who eventually becomes Kinnear's girlfriend. Mendes is so sexy and she looks like such a stereotypical bimbo, it's really wonderful to see the Farrellys make so much out of her. And Cher has an excellent supporting role. If you're a fan of the Farrellys like I am, Stuck on You is very well worth seeing. I hope like hell that they get back in stride and films like this and Shallow Hal are only stepping stones to the next level (and I truly think this will probably happen). As it is, I liked it fine but, dammit, it needs more and better jokes! 7/10.

What a Stinker

As a fan of the Farrelly Brothers, I was highly disappointed in `Stuck On You'. I think all the most entertaining moments were shown on the TV as advertisement. I actually fell asleep during this movie and on waking, I walked out. Glad it was an afternoon matinee I attended, so I only threw away half the money as the evening viewers.

turned off after 30 minutes

Some positive comments on IMDb made us watching this movie. We didn't really expect a funny movie with Matt Damon and (what was his name...) Greg Kinnear, and our fears became true. Why do they put this characters in a movie that is supposed to be a comedy? It's not that I dislike them, but not in a comedy.I really like the movies Dumb & Dumber and There's something about Mary. Shallow Hal and Me, Myself & Irene have also been worth watching. Stuck on you turned out to be somewhat different. It builds on one idea, the Siamese twins, and this idea wasn't funny for one minute. Finally there was this scene with Meryl Streep, and we turned off.I really can not understand why it has that good critics.

pleasant but overlong

"Stuck on You" is a pleasant but overlong comedy. It tells the story of adult male Siamese (they prefer the term 'conjoined') twins who live on the island of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts who agree between themselves to go to Hollywood to become 'an actor'. The humor is restrained but there are some very funny moments. Cher is a guest star and poked fun at herself; Meryl Streep is also a guest star but comes across as not comfortable with her part. The two leads (Matt and Greg) do a nice job with 'a role' that in other hands could have been presented in extremely poor taste.GRADE = "B-"

A bright story with a dark side

posted on 18 Jan 2009

"Stuck on you" is a good movie but it could have been much much better but one moment about which I'll be saying a little bit later. First, good news. Conjoint twins Bob and Walt move to Hollywood because Bob wants to follow his dream of being a movie star. Sure, he makes all the first-timer mistakes possible. Though he deserves to have red carpet strewn before him show business receptionists hardly acknowledge his presence. His brother Walt with a down-to-earth approach sees all this trip as a waste of time and money. And what do you think we have by the time when final credits start rolling? Yes, happy end is guaranteed but if you think the brothers get to the movie, get praised by critics and even receive their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame-wrong! The Farrellies have something special for you, watch this film. It is worth it. All in all, a bright story but it has a dark side. Bob and Walt are, if you forgotten, conjoint twins, they conveniently share a common liver, a nuisance that does not interfere much with daily life. They work, play hockey, and are loved by pretty women. A fairy tale picture looks good but in reality is very steamy. In reality conjoint twins are always united in an ugly manner often incompatible with numerous activities. Their life is pain and constant dependence on medicine. Should there happen to be real conjoint twins among the viewers of this movie, for them this life shown in the movie is maddeningly unavailable. Watching how easy it is for Bob and Walt they can get crazy thinking about their own life. That is bad news. This thought was hanging on my mind and deprived me of much joy the movie could have provided.

Not the best Farrelly brothers...

posted on 14 Jan 2009

The Farrelly brothers have to be one of the most talented writers, creators, and directors of our generation. They are absolutely gifted, and there is no other word for it. They are extremely good at what they do and they have a knack at finding just the write button to push when it comes to comedy. They do their research too, and being a writer that's always important, and to their credit they do a terrific job presenting their knowledge on screen. However, as funny as the previews may look, don't expect another 'Mary' or 'Dumber'(the first one, guys). The movie did have some great lines, and some funny moments, but I think as the years go by, and the brothers age, their comedy is starting to turn a little mushy. They have a good way of showing true emotion and heart, but sometimes you only need so much of that, especially in a comedy like this. The whole point to a movie like this is to show how stupid and funny it is, that two guys are stuck together, not to show how sad and heartbreaking it is that they not want to always be around one another.Basic Plot:Greg Kinear and Matt Damon star as two brothers, Walt and Bob, who were born connected at the waste, I.E. they're Siamese twins.
Walt (Kinear) has dreams and aspirations of becoming a famous movie star, while Bob (Damon) wants nothing more than to continue being a short order cook at a local diner in Martha's Vinyard that the two brothers own. On a whim, and support of Bob, the two brothers move to Hollywood in search of an acting job for Walt. Throughout their stay in the big city, they run into all sorts of stares, comments, girls, and love. But, is Bob happy with the situation, or sad and depressed about what he's given up for his brother? The movie was good and I liked the story enough that it kept me entertained.
Cher was ok, although I really hope that she's not quite as bitchy in real life as she was in the film. The love interest of Damon's was really great. She won me over. She was very good, and I hope to see her in more American films. The acting was excellent and very believable (as it should be), but there was just a gap in the comedy space in the writing, that just shouldn't have been there.I give it a 7 overall out of 10. Like I said, it wasn't bad, it just doesn't hold a candle to some of their earlier work. Give it a try though, Cher's boyfriend in the movie is a funny surprise (that is, if you haven't already seen the previews.)!But that's just my opinion.

Falls flat, but Cher sparks

Overall, this movie had a "done before" dead dog feeling, and was surprisingly tame for the Farrelly brothers who are quite known for their gross-out love stories. The only positive to this film was Cher, who cracked me up every time she graced the screen.Thank god for small miracles.

I may vomit ...

What were the Farrelly Brothers thinking of? The potential for gross-out comedy obviously, (it's about co-joined twins), but almost from the outset they sell out, ditching the laughter and settling instead for the kind of sentimentality you would expect from a mid-afternoon TV movie. In other words, this is pretty dire and a complete waste of the talents of everyone involved and of your time.Cher plays herself, (as talentless bitch; surely not?), and in an uncredited cameo Meryl Streep shows us just why she is probably the greatest actress on the planet, though God knows what hold the Farrellys have over her to get her to do it in the first place. Oh, and the closing credits, if you stay for them and I beg you not to, will make you reach for the sick-bag, (they are meant to be 'heart-warming').

Unbelievably Bland

posted on 07 Nov 2008

You might think a movie about conjoined twins would be wacky or even funny, but somehow the Farrelly brothers knew how to suck every bit of comedy out of a potentially hillarious film and leave the viewer with nothing more than a few sparse chuckles. Stuck on You could just as easily have been titled "Any other movie about small town brothers" because it makes no attempts to serperate itself from any other movie about brothers who have been together for most of their lives. Nothing new, nothing funnier, nothing inventive. I might have thought that the Farrelly brothers could have interviewed a few conjoined twins to get a little more perspective on their lives. I'm sure there are many aspects of their lives that the average person would find funny, just as there are funny moments in anyone's life that, if revealed, would get a good belly laugh from a crowd. My problem is that this movie is just like all of the others. Go see Bad Santa if you want to laugh this holiday season. 4/10

A movie that definitely will not be "Stuck On You!"

posted on 30 Oct 2008

As you might have seen on the trailer previews, this movie is about the life of conjoined twins, however I fail to see the concept of creating such a movie. This film has below average acting and plot development, and fails to keep the audience interested in the movie for longer than 5 minutes.I believe the film tries to be both a comical experience as well as a mushy love story at the same time, but there is no way of knowing for sure because the film does a horrible job of emphasizing both qualities. The jokes are, at best, mediocre, and in small amount at that. You only hear about two or three jokes that, for some strange reason, get carried on as the movie progresses. I laughed, only at the sad joke, when I realized that I had paid to see this movie. What's worse about this film is that it is 2 hours long. By the first half-hour you are thinking along the lines of boredom, hoping the movie will end soon but it lasts for another hour and a half. By the time this movie ended, I was stampeding out of the theater.Seeing this movie made me realize two things: 1. That I would never go see the sequel to this film (if there even is a sequel). 2. I had just wasted 2 painful hours of my life that I would never get back!

bad movie

posted on 30 Oct 2008

What should have been the gimmick for a 30 second restaurant commercial (in which the cooks are conjoined twins) is instead two hours of pure hell. I have often felt that if I a critic says a movie is good, people believe it , no matter how bad it actually is, and this is one of those cases. The direction? Well there was none. I think the only six shots in the entire movie were shot-counter shots, even when both characters were the conjoined twins. I looked away to see if when I looked back, I could imagine what the screen would look like in my mind, purely based upon the sound. I was right, the camera in the same place.Acting? Matt Damon played the part of someone who knew he could act but wanted a beach house so did a stupid movie well. Greg Kinnear, is blond.Cinematography. I think I saw some shadows somewhere but maybe not. That is perhaps good for a comedy where you want things to be bright, but I wouldn't have known any better if they let a monkey do the lighting. Even a stupid monkey.Writing? The only good joke, which I won't ruin, is in the trailer anyway. And its not that funny. Otherwise, I didn't laugh during the whole thing. I was expecting a bad gross-out comedy and I just got a bad movie.Even if you like this movie, you have to admit that there are plenty of talented writers and directors out there that could make a better movie, but I guess the American audience is too dumb to know talent when they see it and instead liked this movie.
