Value for money.......
posted on 24 Jul 2009Wow. A simple equation: If you like animated films + you have kids = BUY TARZAN! Buy it even if you satisfy only one of the above!
The movie is exactly what you'd expect from Walt Disney - watchable, entertaining and includes valuable lessons. Once you've watched the movie and feel satisfied that that was a couple of hours well spent, you can start looking forward to the extra features. And boy does this have extra features! Look forward to several more hours of learning about the making. After which you will find yourself wanting to watch the movie again!
The only thing that can be improved in this movie is possibly the relationship beteen Tarzan and his (gorilla) father. This seemed to end unconcluded and did not carry enough depth/development/growth. But in the overall scheme of things - this is a very minor point.
If you're a Walt Disney fan buy this. If you're not, give this a chance. Along with Lion King, it is Walt Disney's best in the last 5 years.
I sincerely hope that Walt Disney will launch/re-launch all of its movies with this number of extra features.
Superb animation and storyline
posted on 18 Jul 2009This is one of our family's favorite DVDs. After originally seeing this movie in the theater, we couldn't wait for the release on DVD. The animation quality is among the best ever, as is the storyline and sound/music.
Our kids absolutely love this movie, as does the biggest kid of all - me. Highly recommended.
Better than the Lion King?
posted on 10 Jul 2009I recently got Tarzan on DVD and was fearing the worst (what with all the talk about a mislaid 5.0 DD soundtrack and all). Anyway, to my surprise, the DVD looked and sounded wonderful! This IS a reference quality DVD (however, the surrounds could have been more active). Be that as it may, the picture is stunning, the story is magnificently told, the music is great, Rosie IS appropriate and on and on. I was really looking forward to The Lion King as it WAS my fav. Now, I have a new favorite (and I already own it - GREAT!). I guess you could say I whole heartily endorse this DVD. I'm even going to buy the extended version. Keep up the quality Disney and you may get all your animations as #1 sellers yet! What a flic!
Nice adaptation, good for the entire family
posted on 06 Jul 2009This animated version of Tarzan by Disney has some great music and is a reasonable adaptation of the original story. While it has been sanitized for children it still has some subtle wit and satire for adults who watch with their children.
The action is quick and there are very few dull spots. The animation is not as defined as more current works it is lovely to watch and easy on the eyes.
An A class movie
posted on 30 Jun 2009This movie is SO good, I can't believe it. "TARZAN" is truly a brilliant movie. Even as a teenager I was amazed by the quality of this movie. This film doesn't have the childish properties that a lot of the past Disney movies had. Its very easy to get caught up in this movie while you watch it. It is more realistic than I ever expected it to be. Also, it has amazing art quality, great music, a terrific story, and well developed characters. Some things that surprised me about this movie is that blood was shown several times. Also, there was more violence in this movie than in any other disney movie I've seen. I went through several emotions while watching this film and that was surprising (I didn't cry), because even "TITANIC" didn't have that type of effect on me. Thats why I discribe this movie as "brilliant". I don't think I can find any flaws in this film. Disney did such an exellent job with this movie that I now have a new respect for them. When I went to the theatre, I was expecting something like "JUNGLE BOOK". So, as you can see, this movie went way above my expectations. When "TARZAN" comes out on video, I will not hesitate to buy it. I want to own this masterpiece. Now that Disney has made the best movie ever, I will have higher expectation for them in the future. I give this movie an 11 out of 10. Or an A+. Good work.
From Idianapolis.. Great Movie
posted on 24 Jun 2009I have to say that the person from Chicago is way to analytical! This is a childrens movie without a doubt.. Take it from a mother that is very protective of the tv programs that her children watch.. This was very animated and there was no gross violence that all the new cartoons these days have in it.. It was a love story, a frienship story, a happy and a sad story. As an adult, I loved it and highly reccomend it for you and your children. It is something that you can sit down as a family and enjoy together.. Try not to analyze this movie, just enjoy it, it's great!
Funny and clever
posted on 18 Jun 2009This movie is beautifully animated and has a clever plot. There are some scary parts with the mean cat at the beginning that might be a bit too much for very young children. It certainly was for mine. Probably wouldn't be a problem for children 4-5 and above.
It has many comical parts and Rosie O'Donnell's little monkey character was very delightful. Really worth watching.
There's some good work here.
posted on 15 May 2009In a bit of a turnabout for Disney, the main characters have some depth and complexity, while the sidekicks get the stock, throwaway personalities. Minnie Driver brings Jane to life as a believable person: talented, sincere, pensive, and self-conscious. It's a good match for Tarzan, who displays the same traits in a person with a completely different background.
The exploration of the theme of identity is woven through the story without being distracting. The only weaknesses are the tendencies to overdo a few segments: heartstring-tugging throughout the infant sequence, the baboon chase, and the various fight sequences rocketing around the treetops. The ending screamed "kids' movie", but was cute enough to forgive.
The animation is Disney's usual high quality. Characters all move so naturally that you hardly question even supernatural acts. There are some really beautiful I-want-to-live-there jungle scenes, as well as some unfortunately obvious CGI elements.
Best since The Lion King
posted on 19 Apr 2009Tarzan is the best Disney film since "The Lion King", without doubt. Fast-moving, compelling and with the wonderful relief of not having the actors sing. True workmanship at its best. And the voices are really great too... Minnie Driver takes the first price as Jane...
A ten year old's opinion.
posted on 13 Apr 2009I thought the film was very good especially the background. I have the video and I watch it every day. I loved the music and I hum the music a lot. All the characters were good but my favourites were Jane, Terk and Kala. I liked the bit when Kala found Tarzan also when Tarzan met Jane. The first time I saw Tarzan was at the cinema and I cried afterwards. One question I have; Is Terk a boy or a girl?.
A work of art, Took my breath away!
posted on 09 Apr 2009I am a big fan of disney movies and I do believe that they have really out done themselves this time. The animation was, to say the least, SPECTACULAR! I have kept with Disney my whole life and this one is by far their best yet. It will be very hard to top, you can be sure of that. The only thing that I would have to say against this movie is that it is certainly not a children's movie. Over the years, Disney has gotten away from making animated movies that are appropriate for younger audiences. Ever since "The Huntchback Of Notre Dame," Disney has included material that is in some way too mature for younger viewers. I am referring to the scene where Claton hanged himself. They did the best they could with the scene, however I believe that a child would still have trouble relating to what occurred on the screen. However, as an adult I greatly enjoyed the movie. The story line itself was excellent and the animation was fabulous. My favorite part was the music. I loved the way Phil Collins used the music to tell the story. The percussion helped to bring out the jungle atmosphere. I especially liked "Trashin' the Camp." I wish there were some way to put that on stage LIVE.I only have one more thing to say. TO DISNEY: Congratulations on a job well done!
Disney does it again
posted on 07 Apr 2009Another classic has been added to the Disney line of films. The graphics are outstanding. Disney has always set the standard for animation starting with the first full-length classic "Bambi." Children and adults are both entertained with the sounds of the great Phil Collins. Recommended for all.
Disney does it again.
posted on 28 Mar 2009I thought that Tarzan was just great. I have no children, but I go to every Disney movie that comes out. This one had everything. Adventure, danger, romance, comedy. Favorite scene: Jane being chased by the monkeys. I know people aren't going to like this, but, the only thing I didn't like was Rosie O'Donnell. I found her voice very obnoxious, way over the top and unnecessarily loud.
A thrilling film achievement
posted on 22 Mar 2009I did not know what to expect when I went into this movie-- thank god, because any expectations would have been blown away! The animation is superb, well-blended between hand-drawn and computerized animation. The plot is also well-blended, the comic side-kick type characters don't seem added on, and aren't there too much. The villain is also intrinsic in the structure of the story. The music is great-- the opening sequence sent goosebumps down my spine with the overwhelming blend of entrenching music, convincing animation, and genuine emotion. It is a thrilling film achievement, not just for children but for everyone.
Not a 2-disc edition!
posted on 08 Mar 2009The movie? Awesome. The DVD? Another Disney rip-off.
Touted as a two-disc special edition all the way through the packaging of the Cinderella two-disc special edition, Disney silently changed its mind and charged an outrageous price for a single disc. Even the coupon inside the Cinderella DVD said that this would be a two-disc. Why did Disney change its mind last minute? No official word (and no apology when I complained), but you can bet the answer starts with a dollar sign.
WARNING--botched sound--WAIT FOR SPECIAL EDITION RELEASE
posted on 02 Mar 2009The one star I give is because of this version, not the movie itself. THE SOUND IS FAULTY! The left front and rear speaker merge the sound. If you already have purchased this movie I suggest starting it at 31:00 and you will hear the gunshot, noticibly flawed. The thing is, Disney has admitted to the mistake yet comments this does not warrant a recall? Sorry, but if I buy a shirt and it has even a tiny hole, I'm going to want to exchange it for one without the hole. And that exchange should not bring about an argument with the reseller. Disney apparantly does not feel the same way....
For those who have not bought this movie already, WAIT AND THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL EDITION COMING OUT IN APRIL WITH THE MISTAKE CORRECTED. The mistake will also obviously be corrected in future pressings of this edition, but with 700,000 already pressed you would not be able to know if you were getting a 'good' copy. The special edition will also have more extras that so many people have complained the previous Disney releases ignored.
On a brighter side, the movie itself I would rate a 5. The distorted noise doesn't make the movie unwatchable...you just feel cheated. One last comment to a previous response who said that the sound was bad because it was 5.0 instead of 5.1: this is how it was released in theaters as well; it is not a mistake or way of cutting the cost.
Tarzan for Adults more than the kiddies.
posted on 28 Feb 2009Tarzan is a movie for kids of all ages. Phil Collins music opens this movie up for adults and breaks the tradition of the stars having to sing. This opens the way for more action to take place. The animations are amazing and all the voices fit their animated counterparts well. I want to see this movie again and again. This is one that you won't have to find a kid to go see it with. Actually go see it with the least amount of children, so you can enjoy it better without the baby goo goo. The kids lost interest while the adults were fascinated. Go see this movie, no hype here, just pure movie.

Great DVD Features, Annoying Forced Previews
posted on 17 Aug 2009The Tarzan DVD has a nice Storybook reading feature and some other bonuses, but also has an extremely RUDE feature: When you first start the DVD, Disney shows you 3 minutes of previews before launching the main menu. No fastforwarding or skipping allowed! What a dumb way to cheapen an otherwise great product.
