Some friendships last forever... like it or not.
When fiftysomething Suzette loses her job as a bartender she decides to make a road trip to visit her old friend Vinnie who she hasn't seen since their days as groupies back in the day. On the way she meets Harry, a nervous writer who says he is going home to confront his father, then shows her his gun. Once they reach their destination Suzette finds that Vinnie is now Lavinia, a conservative housewife who is reluctant to reexperience the flower power of her youth, and Harry finds confrontation with himself rather than with his father.

Enjoyable and quirky.
posted on 31 Jul 2009I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but ended up enjoying it! Susan Sarandon plays a character like a lot of mothers. She's been so busy bringing up a family, that she forgets who she is and what she stands for and Suzette, Goldie Hawn brings her "back". This movie reminds you to be true to yourself. Remember who you were at 18? Well, some of that teenager, some of her beliefs and dreams are still inside you. And I love how neurotic the 16 year old daughter is --"Ginger, open your throat." She has a little phlegm problem. This movie has some very real moments. I think that most women could appreciate it!
Very warm and funny performances from all!
posted on 27 Jun 2009I went to the film expecting to be disappointed, and I wasn't. The film has great actors who exceed the level of the story line. Jeffrey Rush is being overlooked in the reviews. He's terrific as the loser who is revived by Ms. Goldie. The movie has a positive message and to see our beautiful actresses Goldie and Susan S. playing the vivacious women they are is a total treat. I only have one criticism. The story line faltered toward the end. Great character development was left hanging at the last 2/3's of the movie and a fluffy last third ensued. Oh well, I have to thanks the actors for giving me a good time. My hat's off to them!
Love the dialogue
posted on 21 Jun 2009Love the dialogue for Goldie Hawn...her script is so far from the rest of the dialogue, it seems as if it were written by somebody entirely different...like ME!Very cool character...like ME!Kurt Russel, ...you have such a hot woman...wow, Goldie is like in her late 40's or early 50's and she still is a hottie.Goldie's character was so well created, why wasn't the rest of the cast? If I were a woman, I would be sooo much like her character...loved the movie just because of that fact alone.
Average
posted on 24 May 2009Considering the cast, this film should have been great. However, there is only so much one can do with a flat script, dull characters & an average plot . There was a lot of opportunity to make this film work, but as a whole it just does not mesh. The two leads are incredibly likeable (as always), but the material is sub-standard. It's a really ordinary film, with some terrible cringe-worthy dialogue, especially near the end of the film. The premise is not too bad, but the way it is presented is really droll. A waste of talent, time & money.
HILARIOUS! UPBEAT! EXCELLENT!
posted on 06 May 2009"The Banger sisters" is the best comedy this year in my opinion. Goldie Hawn is still one of the most beautiful, and hilarious actresses in film, and Susan Sarandon is splendid! Not only is the film hysterically funny, but it is very touching as well. This is a fantastic movie and I plan on going to the theatre again this week to see it a 2nd time.
could've been great
posted on 07 Mar 2009this is an interesting story that could have been great. as it was, it was merely an interesting piece of hollywood fluff. flawed fluff at that but the soundtrack was a trip down memory lane. all in all, i still enjoyed the film if for nothing else than for watching hawn, sarandan, and rush. its easy to sit back and watch such a movie if you have no expectations.
Goldie Saves the Day!
posted on 19 Feb 2009`The Banger Sisters' is not the comeback XXX film of porno legends Amber & Ginger Lynn, even though that would probably be a more enticing premise. `The Banger Sisters' stars Goldie Hawn & Susan Sarandon as 2 former groupies who reunite after 20 years. Hawn's character is still coexisting in a world of: rock stars, binge drinking, and tattoo makeovers; while Sarandon's has formulated some counterprograming in her past rock show and is now living a suburban life with a rich lawyer and 2 teenage daughters. `The Banger Sisters' does not do a bang up job with its lifeless screenplay & untidy direction. However, I do have to shine the light on Goldie for her charismatic performance. On the other hand, Sarandon's character was so lifeless that it seemed as she was doing a revised version of `Dead Man Walking' entitled `Dead Woman Walking'. The filmakers of `The Banger Sisters' should thank `Goldie's luck' for not `Bad Bearing' the film into the atrocity film department. *** Average
It says that some friendships seem to last forever, actually it's just the movie that does.
posted on 18 Jan 2009What a terrible movie.I mean this really proves that there are different levels of hell as they relate to chic flicks. This is the movie that would be showing in the Hitler and Stalin level.Sarandon over-acts as she normally does and Goldie, well Goldie is doing what she has done for 30 something years now.Men should do a preemptive strike, ala President Bush, and rent "Terms of Endearment" instead. Perhaps that bit of fake sensitivity will get them out of having to go see this.
Entertaining easy little picture
posted on 04 Jan 2009This picture was funny and fast paced. I was in the mood for a light hearted easy-going comedy and this one hit the spot. Seeing Goldie Hawn in her 50s looking so good and constant in her humor is kind of inspirational and reassuring. Susan Sarandon was good as always. Geoffrey Rush was also quite funny. The chemistry between Goldie/Susan and Goldie and Geoffrey was there!
Not enough bang for our buck
posted on 11 Dec 2008Goldie Hawn (the finest-looking woman of her age on the planet) and Susan Sarandon are terrific in this movie, but they deserved a much better one. The Banger Sisters winds up being unbelievably shallow but it could have been worse - Bette Midler could have shown up instead of Geoffrey Rush.
Just because Goldie and Susan have aged, it doesn't mean that they don't still have it!
posted on 13 Nov 2008Suzette (Goldie Hawn) and Lavinia (Susan Sarandon) used to be groupies with the Doors, but they've since parted ways: Suzette still acts like a groupie, Lavinia lives a laid-back existence in the suburbs. That is, until Suzette decides to come visit Lavinia. Then, all bets are off. Big time.If absolutely nothing else, "The Banger Sisters" shows that Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon still have the talent that they always had (of course, neither one ever lost talent). Geoffrey Rush has a great supporting role as uptight Harry Plummer, with some strange plans.I gotta say, autumn 2002 put an interesting spin on chick flicks, with "The Banger Sisters", "Far from Heaven" and "The Hours".
* * * out of 4.
posted on 13 Nov 2008Broke and without a job rock groupie Goldie Hawn decides it is time she pay a visit a longtime friend (Susan Sarandon) she hasn't seen in twenty years. However, Sarandon has changed a lot over twenty years and is no longer a groupie, but a country club prep. This film then details the pairs misadventures as Hawn makes Sarandon realize just who she really is. Crude by the numbers film with sloppy direction and editing really should not have worked, but it does. Sarandon and especially Hawn are an absolute delight to watch on screen and the supporting cast is very good also.Rated R; Profanity and Sexual Situations.
Too Much Set Up
posted on 16 Oct 2008This script takes forever to get the "Banger Sisters" together and off and running. The hotel room is just a device to get Goldie Hawn's character indoors when Susan Sarandon doesn't want her around. And Rush's character is just plain weird. This shrill movie is just not funny, though Sarandon is very good as usual.
Way too much profanity!
posted on 08 Oct 2008It actually distracted me from the premise of the whole movie. If you're a parent, do not take your kids to this film. You'll regret it because of how much profanity is here! The idea was cool, though: two middle-aged women finding joy in a reunion of sorts, and a man is healed of his demons. Not bad...
Full of laughs
posted on 02 Oct 2008With plenty of time and the trials of everyday life a person can lose their own personal identity. This is a hilarious story of two ex groupies and an eccentric writer who help each other rediscover their inner selves.... This is a fun movie that is full of laughs. This movie reminds us to let the real you shine.
Hawn and Sarandon are the new "Thelma and Louise"
posted on 08 Sep 2008There's a lot of movies where you have 2 male best friends as the main characters, but there hasn't been a lot of female best-bud flicks. There was Thelma and Louise starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, excellent movie, and than there's The Banger Sisters. The Banger Sisters stars Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon as two former best friends who did everything together including, going to Woodstock. That was in there younger days though, and now Sarandon has changed into a more conservative look, while Goldie Hawn is still the same party, fun-loving attitude. So Geoffrey Rush is on his way to kill his father, when he picks up hitch-hiker Hawn and takes her to meet her former best friend. To Hawn's disappointment she finds Sarandon has taken on a new life, has a family of her own and friends who know nothing about her younger days. When Hawn shows up claiming to be a friend of Sarandon's the family has a tough time believing it. Soon, Sarandon goes back to being the woman, that she used to be, and there having a great time. Will Sarandon turn back to being a straight-professional, conservative woman? Or will she keep being the fun-loving, party-goer that she used to be. Find out in this great comedy classic, that I gave a 7 out of a 10, because it is very funny, lot's of great lines and it's a great movie all-a-round, could have been a bit better, love the soundtrack, because it includes some of the great songs from the 60s.
More of a damp squib than a Banger
posted on 15 Aug 2008Great cast, started out promisingly but where was the story? Where was the depth? It had occasional flashes of a better movie trying to get out but writer/director Bob Dolman chould have done so much more with this, considering the talent available....

A messy directorial debut
posted on 04 Aug 2009This film is a bit of a mess. It feels like two projects (Hawn - Rush and Hawn - Sarandon) stitched together because someone felt that neither storyline was able to stand on its own. This, unfortunately, results in a film that fails to satisfactorily develop either story or explore the relationships they contain.Bob Dolman is still a novice and I've certainly seen worse directorial debuts. However, the scene containing the valedictorian speech is dreadful both in terms of script and direction, and easily provides the lowest and silliest point of the whole movie. As writer/director Mr Dolman can't escape responsibility for this. The characterisations are all paper-thin and I found it hard to care about any of them. Hollywood's usual 'liberal good - conservative bad' (or certifiably insane) agenda is present and correct but executed with ham-fisted incompetence. However, 5/10 because it did make me smile.
