Whats Not to Like - Virtually the whole film.
posted on 28 Jun 2009This film is the epitome of the moronic trash that Hollywood is bent on producing. Humor for those who cannot think. It is just another adventure of the illiterate nanny from Brooklyn, that is always more boring than the previous adventure, who should have been fired years ago. I won't spoil the work for you, watching it will spoil your day for you with much more class. I ranks right down there with the garbage from the Wayans brothers, John De Bello of Killer Tomatoes fame, Santa with Muscles, and like visual vomit. I give it a 2 and a half. I could actually go lower but it is hard to believe that there are actually efforts in cinematography that are much worse than Fran Drescher in her over played nanny role. Woody Allen, Monty Python, Marx Brothers, Peter Sellers, now there are the experts of comedy worth watching.
A great actress in a Great movie.
posted on 26 Jun 2009This film was awesome! I loved "The Nanny" and still watch it today on Lifetime. Fran Drescher is one of the great actors of our time. Her unique voice and offbeat style puts her over the top. This movie would have lost all of it personality and perkiness if not for Fran Drescher. Two Thumbs up!
Awesome fun
posted on 24 May 2009This is a wonderful Cinderella story if ever I've seen one. Mistaken identity, a teacher of cosmetology becomes a teacher of royalty. The children in the movie are great, and I took an instant liking to the youngest girl, due to the fact that she was a "big, beautiful woman."
Timothy Dalton was spectacular in playing the stubborn, nonsympathetic king of his country, who had no clue as to what his staff were doing behind his back.
Fran Drescher was magnificent, and even in her Queens behavior, innocent, but strong-hearted. She was the perfect match for this king who realized after meeting her that he could not live without her.
I would hope everybody will watch this beautiful, sincere love story, and recommend it highly.
Suffering from sitcom disease
posted on 22 Feb 2009This project was cast like a television sitcom, directed like a television sitcom, and the actors act as though it is a television sitcom. The results might have been fine for the small screen ... but on the big screen the results are at time painful to watch.
Once upon a time.....
posted on 16 Dec 2008..... Timothy Dalton played a little part called "Mr Rochester" in "Jane Eyre".
The day I saw that movie I vowed I would listen to him read the phone book and be happy.....
.... so what could be better than a movie starring our fav 007 and the baddest beautician who ever lived?!?! LOL
This movie is an absolute escape. I enjoy watching it for the comedy, and the incredible Mr. Dalton.
When do I get to be his massage therapist???
Harmless fluff, if you watch it for free
posted on 08 Oct 2008This is one of those movies that follow the age-old pattern: spunky heroine gets job as nanny/governess/teacher from handsome (and rich) but callous widower/divorcee. Heroine is a breath of fresh air in household, children are initially resistant but soon come to love their nanny/governess/teacher. Heroine and employer fall in love but some conflict causes her to run away/return home. Hero realizes that he can't live without heroine and goes and gets her and they live happily ever after. This formula has worked for everything from Jane Eyre to the Sound of Music. It is not quite successfully pulled off this time around, the main problem being that Fran Drescher is so gratingly annoying that I was seriously suprised that the Stalin-esk Boris didn't just 'disappear' her. I also didn't understand their attraction to each other (aside from the fact that Timothy Dalton cuts a VERY nice figure in uniform). In this case I have to agree with Greg Kinnear in You've Got Mail (I know, it's brought me to this):
'She fell in love with Gen. Franko?!' 'So? People do stupid things in foreign countries.' 'Sure, they buy leather jackets for WAY more than they're worth but they don't fall in love with fascist dicators!'
Cute and fun
posted on 01 Jun 2008There are few actual laugh-out-loud funny moments in this movie but it is cute nonetheless. It has a plotline very much similar to Fran Drescher's TV show "The Nanny". Fran is a beauty college instructor who, through a misunderstanding, ends up in the fictional country of Slovetzia as the tutor of the president's children (one is played by the "bee Girl" from the Blind Melon video *hee-hee*). She brings the children out of their shells and also teaches the president a thing or two (about opening up, freedom and love). Unfortunately it takes her leaving for him to realize it, but there is a 'happily ever after' ending. This movie is a must-have for Fran Drescher fans needing a fix!!
Just routine entertainment
posted on 22 Feb 2008What do you expect? It's just entertainment business. And being such it works. Fran Drescher has her fans coming from The Nanny. Timothy Dalton gives the touch of quality acting and leading handsome actor prestige. Ken Kwapis - the director - has an expertize in TV series (including the famous ER among others). The plot is a blended mixture of The King and I, The Sound of Music, The Beauty and the Beast, The Nanny, etc., all following the proved successful formula of routine entertainment for masses. So, what do we get? A typical USA yarn showing how easy things can be solved in movies when some naive good looking Brooklyn girl strikes the heart of a stupid foreign dictator. Flattering money worth for spectators who just want to have a couple of laughs watching familiar faces - and situations - on the screen.
Diamond in the rough
posted on 08 Feb 2008"The Beautician and the Beast" is a warm and surprisingly touching romantic comedy/drama. It's a modern day cinderella story as well as a variation on the age-old "Beauty and the Beast" fable.
Fran Drescher as Joy Miller is a delight as the beautician from Queens who is stunning to look at but whose voice is a distinctive blend of nasal/New York. Believing that she is a public school teacher when in fact she is a beauty school teacher, Joy is mistakenly recruited by a representative of the dictator of a small eastern European country as a teacher for his children. The dictator is played by Timothy Dalton who somewhat resembles a youthful and very sexy Laurence Olivier. There is ferociousness tempered by a childlike vulnerability in Dalton's vigorous performance.
Joy may not have a university degree in education, but she has plenty of street smarts. She has a patient and understanding nature yet doesn't hesitate to speak her mind especially when a wrong is committed. Joy makes an enduring impression upon the dictator's children and especially upon the tyrannical father himself.
This movie improves with age because it reminds us that entertainment does not have to be profanity-laced, violent, or sexually explicit to hold your interest. Instead, its depiction of people and relationships is gentle and humane. Additionally, "The Beautician and the Beast" is a visual treat with impressive photography, sets, and costumes. It also has a lush and romantic musical score.
Amongst so many unimaginative, big-budget Hollywood movies and their equally unimaginative, big-budget sequels, "The Beautician and the Beast" shines like a diamond in the rough. It's a film that your whole family can watch and feel good about. What a rarity!
One of the Worst Comedies I've Ever Seen
posted on 14 Jan 2008How do you know when a comedy is bad? First obvious answer is - when you do not laugh. Improved answer - when your only laughs are about the way the movie is made. 'Beautician and the Beast' comes very close to this. The film starts actually from a good idea, kind of a remake of 'The King and I' in a post-Communist European dictature. However what could have been the subject of a good comedy with romantic and political nuances is completely spoiled by the series of not funny gags, previsible plot line, and stereotype characters lacking any comical value. However, the bigger harm is done by the incredibly bad acting. Fran D. is competing for the worst acting that I have ever seen on a big screen. Her acting is beyond the lower level one would expect in TV sitcoms. The rest of the cast are just bad, and look kind of uneasy to have been involved in this film. I felt robbed of my two hours at the end of the film, and sorry not to have gone to sleep earlier (or chosen a different channel).
I Like This Movie (It's Funny!)-- So Sue Me!!
posted on 04 Nov 2007I know that alot people probably have seen this and thought it was ridiculous or have seen it on the movie store shelf and ignored it. This is such a funny movie-- Fran Drescher is the main draw, but Timothy Dalton as the angry, dictator/president father of three is hilarious as well. There's one scene where he tells one of his advisors to "Talk to the hand." It's funny because it's a rigid Timothy Dalton doing this. And also because NO ONE does this anymore.
Drescher stars as Joy Miller, an aspiring beautician. While she's teaching a beauty class, the classroom goes up in flames because a student was smoking and caught the mannequin head on fire. Another student attempts to put the fire out by using a can of hairspray. Oops. Joy saves the animals that are in the classroom and ends up on the front page, and because she's such a dedicated "teacher," is offered a job teaching the children of the Slovetzian president, Pochenko (Dalton). Joy has several meet-cutes with this seemingly cold, brutal president, who acts more like a dictator. We come to find that he's not as rigid as we think.
It's Beauty and the Beast meets The King and I. It's not executed as well as the previously mentioned, this movie stutters through their romance (remind me why she instantly likes him so much??) and there's an unnecessary story about a "rebel" boyfriend of the president's daughter, which turns into a giant rigamaroll. Though all in all, this movie is a good laugh. Recommended!!
Terrific!!!
posted on 22 Sep 2007I thought that this was one of the cutest movies ever, plus it's a good movie to watch on Family Night. It's very clean cut, and innocently funny with no sex jokes or anything like that. It's light hearted and leaves you with a smile on your face. So, for families who do have Family Night, rent this one. It's something the whole family can enjoy! :o)

What's Not To Like????!!!!?????
posted on 15 Aug 2009First of all, I'll let everyone know that I gave this movie (worthy of a 7) a 10 just because the overall rating deserves to be A LOT higher than it is!
Secondly, everyone who gave this movie a bad rating needs to stop rating movies altogether. What's not to like about this movie that is charming, cute, innocent, and funny?? Fran Drescher may have been type-casted right off the Nanny, but who cares!!???!! What did you expect her to act like in the film!?! Were you expecting an oscar worthy performance!!!??? Did you think she was the next Gwyneth Paltrow, or Julianne Moore??? If you saw the previews and have half a brain, you would have known exactly what to expect.
I had no expectations for this movie (nor should anyone have) besides a good laugh. And that's exactly what it delivers. Fran is absolutely perfect for the role of Joy Miller and she is even more charming and funny in this movie than Sandra Bullock is in Miss Congeniality (another great movie by all accounts, and I'm not downing the always fantastic Sandra).
You people need to STOP ANALYZING MOVIES FOR WHAT THEY'RE NOT AND LEARN TO ENJOY THEM FOR WHAT THEY ARE!!!!!!!!
