No force from this world can stop it!
It's 2 A.M. in St. Louis when a routine scientific experiment goes terribly wrong and an explosion shakes the city. A scientific team investigates, clashing with an intergalactic, voltage-devouring creature that vaporizes them. By 7 A.M. a chain of earthquakes is tearing the city apart while a massive swirling black hole is consuming the remains. The alien is devouring every source of electricity it finds and destroying every human who blocks its way. Mass chaos rules as St. Louis is being evacuated. Only a few people, scientist Eric Bryce, his assistant Shannon, and General Ryker comprehend the mortal danger. By midnight, the Pentagon initiates a nuclear attack against the black hole. Bryce has only one hour to find a solution to obliterate the alien and the colossal black hole before mankind is annihilated.

Thank goodness the acting wasn't flat--cause everything else was
posted on 05 Jul 2009As I've stated before, on my first review posted to this site (which regrettably was of an even cheesier Sci-Fi flick than this one) I can forgive major flaws in scientific believability. . .for the sake of the movie. . .First I'll name a couple of pluses, pluses that didn't exist in the first movie I saw of this "4 pack set" (Supernova) A plus was the acting wasn't terrible, despite what they had to work with, they didn't lose my interest, obviously inexperienced actors/actresses but not terrible. Also, the destruction of the Arch would be how I would expect it to fall--sorta. . .that's it for good. . .now some of the bad (as much as I can fit anyway) The writers on this one were awful, the presidential 'speech' sounded totally unprofessional, and like something no living president I know of would ever consider saying to the country. This thing that feeds of Electricity, from the get-go, I'm saying TURN OFF THE FREAKING POWER PEOPLE!!!! If that's what you think is feeding the black hole, turn off the power, and it can't feed anymore can it? With all the extras that were hired who did a convincing job on their shock and dismay, it's ashame no-one thought to turn off the juice. The Black Hole was very 2 dimensional, perhaps it's just me, but last I checked such a thing is not possible, it would be growing up and down as well, in all directions, and it wouldn't skip One Metropolitan Square because the Arch looks more fun to destroy right after the stadium. My biggest problem is at the end of the movie though. They get this electric thing to go to the truck by SHUTTING OFF POWER. . .so why is the truck driving through a St. Louis with stop lights, city buildings lit up, Xmas lights etc? But, not only did they forget that the power was out for this ending, they forgot the Arch is gone. . .you can see clearly when the truck is driving the red light on the top of the Arch, and because that red light focuses the attention of the eye, you see the whole Arch, in perfect condition, unscathed. . .Additionally none of the buildings near where this black hole is being hit by Mr Electric are damaged at all. . .they did a decent job in the movie maintaining the plot until the end and then it really fell apart.Again I applaud the actors for doing their best with the terrible script write here, the dialog was terrible--but that's not the actors fault. . This would have been a 4, but the ending killed it for me completely. You can't have the St. Louis Arch be destroyed and then magically reappear, and you can't have electricity eating thingamabob attached to a truck because it's the only thing with power when you've got Christmas Lights, and the rest of the city's lights on. . .fail
Black hole bends time, a lot of wasted time
posted on 25 Jun 2009Two weeks before this I read Gregory Bendfords COSM. When the movie started I thought no way, it almost looked that this was going to be much fun. But as you know, there are so many great stories written, than why are the new scifi movies only about special effects, and everybody is forgetting the base, a good story. After watching this, I really thought what did I see, were did the time go. Calling this movie scifi because there is a black hole in it, is a bit mediocre.Better watch 'The day the earth stood still', special effects are simple, and it's black and white. But someone paid attention to the story.
Wait for Mystery Science Theater 3000 version
posted on 11 May 2009"The Black Hole" is about the worst action movie you can possibly
imagine. Scientific experiment in high energy physics goes wrong
and black hole is created inside the particle accelerator. Soon
it becomes obvious there is intergalactic monster (yes - you read
it correctly) involved - it somehow uses black holes to travel
across the Universe. At this point Department of Homeland Security
and US military jump in and their contingency plan is to go
"nucular on that thing". Over wild objections of cartoonish looking
scientists (wild hair nerds with scared look and glasses) who argue
that bomb will "break one big black hole into many small ones".
The rest is just loads of bad dialouge, horrible acting and cheesy
computer generated effects. This movie should come with a warning
label "Viewership restricted to 10 yo and und under".
On a positive side - it is heartwarming to know that there are
some dedicated mad scientists out there who will risk their lives
to prevent the President and Department of Homeland Security from
nuking us all when fighting intergalactic monsters.
OK - you have been WARNED.
Not worth your time
posted on 13 Apr 2009The two best things I can say about this movie are 1) it is very short, and 2) I rented it so can return it asap. I don't watch movies like this for the plot (good thing!) or the cast, but for the special effects. Which in this case means a whole lot of camera shaking. It makes no sense, there are way too many holes in it, and what in the world is up with Judd Nelson's hair?
Sucked, Sucked and SUCKED!
posted on 02 Apr 2009I've read better stories in fanzines. Judd Nelson gave his worse performance as the lead in this film, whiny in his righteous regarding his idea of getting rid of "the great energy entity", whiny about being separated from his kid, whiny about every decision he had to make. Everything that happened, every character written within I could cross-reference with another made by Sci-Fi channel film. I'm surprised David Keith didn't show up as the made-to order bad guy. I can't believe I had been so anxious to see this clap-trap. The hole was not black but a gray cgi whirlpool and even this took too long in the film to show up. Not going to rate this trash as it doesn't deserve a rating. Finally, I'm ending by saying I can't believe I waited ALL WEEK TO SEE THIS FILM and that I'll never watch it again.
Please! Make them stop!
posted on 27 Mar 2009Why, oh why, does SciFi continue to create these horrible wastes of time and money? I watched this solely for it being set in St. Louis. There's really nothing good to say about this movie. There is just so much wrong here that it's hard to even know where to start. The dialog is horrible and the plot is even worse. Particularly bad is when a character tells you something and then the camera shows you something completely different (e.g. "the black hole is growing" and then shown the same size throughout the entire movie). There are too many examples to list, and I'd hate to "spoil" this movie for anyone who still wishes to abuse themselves by watching it.If I had to say something nice, it would be that some of the effects aren't half bad. Not good across-the-board, but not bad. Since you can see those in the ads for the movie, there's no reason to subject yourself to the complete film. Please, SciFi, save your money and create 24 episodes of Stargate instead of 20. At least then you'd have four hours of programming people would enjoy instead of this two hours of nonsense.
Black Hole Science
posted on 19 Feb 2009We have no idea what a "Black Hole" would do if it suddenly developed on the surface of a planet. It could act like a block of sodium metal on the surface of water. Whatever you think a Black Hole is, in terms of physics, it is first of all a distortion in time and space and gravity. Whatever is at the center of it is not anything we consider to be matter. While there is a great deal of elaboration on the theory that fits the data, science is about experiment. We have not probed or experimented with a Black Hole. Here is a mind experiment for you. We know that as matter approaches the speed (or velocity) of light, its mass increases without limit. Imagine an object with a mass that was infinite.Gravity is directly proportionate to mass. So, an object with mass without limit would have gravity without limit. The reason a photon (light) is able to travel at light speed is because it has no mass.If there were any possibility of creating a Black Hole, likely it would be in a situation, like an accelerator, where a particle with mass is forced with great energy to accelerate toward that light velocity.Since that particle's mass is increasing with velocity, it would take exponentially more energy to accelerate it further. You would need energy without limit, therefore to accelerate a mass without limit to light velocity. So, the issue of how a Black Hole would interact with a planet's surface is a moot point. Likely if you turned the whole planet's mass into energy you could still not produce a Black Hole.In the movie the phenomena is characterized as a Black Hole mainly by the media man in a news chopper. It could be a distortion in space/time like a wormhole as well. When we are willing to suspend disbelief in a movie for faster than light travel, it seems trivial, to me, to get excited about what a Black Hole might do on suddenly appearing on the surface of the planet.
Monster meets Disaster Movie
posted on 17 Feb 2009In the style of Tibor Takács "The Gate" just got a "hole" lot bigger. The movie was well done with great graphics and a great cast. Better than average TV movie. The monster was reminiscent of the invisible creature from "Forbidden Planet". The film had all the tension of a disaster movie with a nasty little monster thrown in for good measure. So we have a Black Hole devouring St Louis and its invisible creature eating electricity causing havoc. Well done Tibor! worth watching again. On a personal note, Tibor and I went to grade school together and yes he was entertaining as a child, always telling jokes and making rude sounds at the back of the classroom. The principals office was always a popular meeting spot.Eric Anderson
Considering it's budget and where it comes from, it's a decent little sci-fi camp flick
posted on 15 Feb 2009I originally picked The Black Hole up because I thought it was the original seventies one. So I was already a little disappointed when I discovered this was some TV movie from two years ago but I watched it anyways and I'm glad I did. Certainly it's not going into the sci-fi hall of fame but considering it's a TV film on a TV budget it's a decent little flick with some campy acting but somehow a relatively decent story and even some very decent special effects. It would appear as though director Tibor Takács is one of the masters of TV horror camp. He has done no less than 20 of these types of films so he should have some sort of talent involved in it and he does. He uses the story and budget and effects the best that he can to make a decently watchable flick. The plot of the film is actually very good for sci fi fans. A man made black hole releases a monster of energy that begins to destroy everything in it's path. Focusing rather heavily on the city of St. Louis they certainly create a destructive path in the city.Judd Nelson plays outcast scientist Eric Bryce who becomes the unwilling hero of the story. Nelson can act...we've seen it before but he seems to be getting caught in these roles of the washed up drunk but even still he does a pretty decent job of carrying this film. He's watchable and actually makes a very down to earth hero in the end. Kristy Swanson is fellow scientist and love interest Shannon Muir. Swanson looks like a deer in the head lights for most of the film but she supports Nelson decently enough although their romance and tension is a little strange to me. She is okay in the role but not the stand out performer by any means. David Selby is really terrific in a very subtle kind of way as General Ryker. He is also a hero in his own way and although he doesn't get a lot of dialog he does a really great job in the role and is probably one of the stronger characters in the entire film. I think he could have carried the film himself. The Black Hole won't put you on the edge of your seat by any means but to kill an hour and a half it's not the worst thing you could watch. The decent story and decent acting makes it worth seeing if you're a sci-fi nut and looking for something different. As mentioned earlier the special effects really aren't that bad, in fact they are well done. Watching the St Louis arch fall apart was very cool and although it's probably stock footage...the actual city being destroyed was also very cool. All in all I suppose you'd have to be a fan to really bother watching it but there is far worse out there in Television and on DVD for that matter. 7/10
So sad

sucks
posted on 09 Dec 2008well,this movie was pretty bad.bad acting, bad story, mediocre special effects, and bad dialogue.the two main actors,Kristy Swanson and Judd Nelson seemed to be phoning in their performances just for a pay check.the supporting cast wasn't great either.the story was silly, and very slow.and i'm no physicist, but i'm guessing a lot of the science was inaccurate.in some movies, that doesn't matter to me.for example f the movie is exciting or has sympathetic characters,or a good storyline.this movie has none of those.i just could not get into this movie, and really just waited for it to end.the ending was abrupt and anti climatic, which isn't really surprising since the whole movie was anti climatic.for me,The Black Hole is a 3/10
Oh well...
posted on 09 Dec 2008Put it this way. It's probably better than going to bed early with a box of crackers. It reinforces my view that nobody ever has made a good sci-fi flick. Having said that, it whiled away a dreadfully wet and miserable April evening. The effects are passable, the acting is competent if undistinguished, the science is questionable, the characters are stereotypes and the plot is predictable. And for some inscrutable reason, it was made in St. Louis. I suppose if one must destroy a city, St. Louis is as good a choice as any! Then there is that ridiculous business where the troops confront the zapping electricity with automatic weapons at the ready. Maybe they were also on the look out for copper wire thieves. Or terrorists. In any case, the DVD (and do you really expect great movies from the Wal Mart bargain bin?) will make a nice coaster for my coffee cup.
ouch!
posted on 30 Sep 2008There is a scene in this movie where the main character is driving in this van. Most of St.Louis has been destroyed and there is mass hysteria, widespread panic...He calls his ex-wife and daughter and frantically tells them to stay put, he will come and get her. In the next shot we see his van slowly roll up to a stop sign on a quiet suburban street and he STOPS AT THE STOPSIGN!! The city of St. Louis has been almost entirely destroyed and this dude stops at a stop sign on a quiet street while supposedly rushing to save his daughter. That is only one of a whole batch of flaws in directing. Apart from the obvious flaws this movie suffers from some of the worst acting I've ever seen. You kind of wish they would nuke all these people and put a quick end to this quagmire.
The only thing that went into the Black Hole was wasted time
posted on 16 Jul 2008The idea of a black hole being created due to a failed experiment in a experimental lab on our own planet was the thing which made me watch this film. And of course being it a science fiction movie. The first 10 to 15 minutes were not bad, after that it is a complete waste of time. They come with with the idea of alien creature which uses the black hole as a kind of portal to consume electricity on our planet, and which is annoyed by sound. It also uses electric power-lines to move around. The scientists do not explain how it is possible for a being consisting of energy, to emerge from a black hole, which supposedly consumes everything, even light (which is a kind of energy as well), hence the name black hole. It looks like a black hole because the gravity pull of it consumes everything. Not in this movie. The black hole in this movie looks more like a tornado. The best part of the movie is the way they make the Gateway Arch of St. Louis crumble down. Watch this part, and skip the rest, because the rest is a complete waste of time.
Makes "Alien Cargo" look good
posted on 18 Jun 2008This movie is one of the worst of the "shovelware" the Sci-Fi channel shows. The acting is awful, the plot is broken, the characters are contrived, and the end result screams "Mystery Science Theater." This is a true rotten tomato if one ever existed. On the other hand, if you're a St. Louisan, you're bound to get some entertainment out of this movie, if for no other reason than to see the local landmarks. Of course, you'll be shocked to discover that the St. Louis Science Center is, in fact, a quantum laboratory and that Busch Stadium was apparently not demolished in the way the local news claimed! The local appeal aside, this is an utterly awful movie that is only watchable if your friends like to make snide remarks during the pitiable conversations. If you like movies like "Reptillian" or "10.5: Apocalypse," watch this film. For the millions of others of you out there, run away. Far away.
"The Black Hole" (2006)
posted on 31 May 2008Seargent Bennett, a woman with a modest part in the film was played by Heather Dawn? She is not listed in the film credits as far as I could tell, and IMDb has her listed as Heather Dawn playing Sgt. Heather Dawn. What's up with that? Otherwise, it's another formula sci-fi film that they've been making as of late. Entertaining, but hardly riveting. The plot is a bit too thin, and the "creature" is similar to so many others, such as at least two on the original Outer Limits series. If the president nearly okayed nuking the "Hole" to destroy it, I'm sure it would have been bombed no matter what if the current U. S. administration were portrayed!
?Lectroids?
posted on 17 May 2008Production values were good, with somewhat above average acting/directing/writing. There was a bit more intrigue in figuring out how to "stop the monster", than many Sci Fi Channel creations. But, I guess I would like to see the SciFi channel be more innovative. After all we are talking Science Fiction here. I feel there are many more intriguing authors, who often come up with more suspenseful, and less formulaic plots than, "Oh my, can we stop the monster/natural,(or unnatural) disaster, before it kills us all!" Come on SciFi Channel, you have come a long way from just showing reruns of "Lost in Space", surprise, us, WOW us, confuse us! I want to see SF movies that I have to watch several times to figure out what was really going on. Thanks!BUCKAROO BANZAI: "Lectroids, from Planet Ten, by way of the 8th dimension."(from the original script)

Black hole has lunch in Missouri
posted on 30 Aug 2009I knew from the trailers Sci-Fi channel was showing that this one would be totally insane. I watched anyway, figuring it would be at least good for some kitschy comedy, and a chance to see my home town of St. Louis get ripped. It did not disappoint (at being insane, that is).A black hole is created artificially in a lab, but the black hole itself is not the only menace, as a strange electrical energy entity (that zaps people into oblivion) hitchhikes with it. This creature was actually kind of a creative plot device, since the movie really didn't seem to know what to do with the black hole other than devour stuff. Since there is a famous landmark in St. Louis, it's pretty obvious where the black hole goes for lunch (always moving along the ground in a 2-dimensional manner, by the way). As for the creature, it was utilized in some intriguing ways; but the explanation of its nature and intent was insufficiently developed, and could have been explored more. Most everyone is at least somewhat familiar with basic scientific theory regarding black holes, and therefore will see a myriad of scientific absurdities, but if you view this silly nonsense without taking it seriously, it can be fun to watch. Toss disbelief into the black hole; or just play a game of "find the goofy science" as you watch. The actors, given the weird script, really do approach the thing with urgency. When the scientist hero describes his quantum physics theories, you almost want to believe the offbeat premise of this movie. But then another bizarre thing happens and you're laughing hysterically again. There are the usual ploys and clichés: divorced dads, military that wants to use nukes, rogue scientists, TV news reporters doing play-by-play of destruction, etc.Watch for loony amusement only. Science has been imploded in this "Black Hole."
