I Speak The Truth:I Still Love This Movie

posted on 25 Aug 2009

As many who grew up in the 1980's I was reared on this movie. So I'm going to forget all the revisionist junk about product placement and get to my review of the actual content. The Care Bears are a community of bears who live literally in the clouds in a kingdom call Carealot. This story is about two characters;two abandoned children named Kim and Jason who the Care Bears are trying to bring back to a state of joy.The other is a bungling magicians assistant named Nicholas who falls under the influence of an evil spirit that lives in a spell book, who tries to manipulate Nicholas to do it's evil bidding. Once they're convinced Kim and Jason end up having to help the Care Bears as the spirit works overtime to destroy Carealot and humanity's kind spirit in general. In the end the plot gets really interesting and almost Shakesperean in a kids cartoon sense;Nicholas, the villian of the story doesn't get destroyed. The Care Bears convince him he was never a failure and doesn't need to take his insecurities out on the world. Funny thing is I didn't really get any of this until I re-watched this as a teenager. It was the 90's and the culture of the day was rejected what the Care Bears represented, prefering to lump with with a decade my generation wanted badly to reject. To be honest many people I knew as a teen ended up a lot like Nicholas lol. Especially some of the "faux" goth kids. With some people I was looking for the evil magic book. Well anyway things have......actually gotton worse in that respect. But I love the Care Bears. And whatever values this movie represents morally are still with me to this day.

Care bears are great!

I have heard that this is way too scary for kids. I watched it when I was a kid, and I really don't think so. I have a feeling people are sheltering their kids more these days than they did in the past. Even so, I thought it was a great movie then, and it's a great movie still today. Amazon claims it's a vapid attempt at hiding a commercial for the new Care Bear Cousins.. but I thought meeting the Cousins one by one was the best part! I have seen this film a million times. I have younger sisters, but I bought it for MYSELF. :P

Incredible

Sync it up with Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral. Now, I know full well that Trent Reznor never intended you to do this. But that doesn't mean it doesn't work. It's absolutely amazing and terrifying how well they go together. Make sure you go ahead and mute the movie, of course. You will not be disappointed. Unless you somehow manage to do it wrong.

Great Movie to Recommend

I recall watching this as a kid and loved it. The songs are great. Recently, I rented this for my 3-year old and got stuck with late fees because she loves it and doesn't want to give it back. To surprise her, I bought her own Care Bears Movie on DVD. The first time I watched it with her brought memories when I was a kid and loved the care bears. Surprisingly, I remembered all of the songs. These type of cartoons and others I grew up with, are so much better than today's cartoons. Definitely a good movie to recommend.

Something that this generation of children is missing... compassion.

Let's face it - the world has grown into a rather unpleasant place, and the recent generations of children are more jaded than any I or my mother have ever seen. Toys are over-priced, uninventive and children get bored with them in a matter of days. Children's movies today are much the same, getting shorter and shorter every movie and teaching children nothing. If anyone with children or younger siblings has ever had to suffer through current children's programming, you'll see what I mean. They're reverse-educational; a young child pointed at the Teletubbies sun and said "Baby," and then pointed at the real sun and said "Baby." Blues Clues teaches children to shout(trust me on this one,) and shows such as 'the Wiggles' remind me far too much of PeeWee Herman (the worst "children's" show of all time.)So rewind TV - go back to 80's cartoons. Even though Care Bears were originally piloted to advertise the toys, the show evolved into something NICE. The animation was far from spectacular, especially when compared to today's computer animation, and the story lines WERE simple. But it had something to offer children that 99% of new cartoons don't offer - examples of non-violent resolutions to conflicts, sharing thoughts and items with others, being open about your feelings, caring about yourself and others. These 80's cartoons encouraged children to not be jaded, selfish and rotten brats. (And if you don't believe me that today's violence-fed kids are brats, just go to my sister's elementary school - I've NEVER seen so many 5th graders dressed like whores in my life.)Storyline and morality aside, you should also pay attention to the music. Following the habits of 80's cartoons and movies, there are numerous song and dance numbers randomly inserted into conversation. But they are certainly striking in the boldness of them. And by this I mean the harmonies. Cue up the song "Home Is In Your Heart" on your movie or cd and just listen. The harmonies running through the song feel as though they should clash against each other and explode, but they just miss that clashing point and somehow manage to work very well. You can distinctly hear the SATB lines, and how soprano and tenor carry a lot of the melody and the base and alto are used to interesting harmonies. Just listen. The music was really well written. Long story short, let your children watch movies like this, and if you feel that they didn't learn anything from it, discuss the movie with them. 6.5/10

Way too scary for preschoolers!!

posted on 19 Mar 2009

I am schooled in the age appropriateness of literature and film as an educator and now a mom. I know what my child can grasp cognitavely and emotionally, and this one just did not sit well with me at all. I hadn't read any reviews and when my 2+ year old daughter had started to collect care bears as I did at her age, I saw this movie and decided to buy it. This movie is the reason I now read reviews on movies before I buy them for my precious children! I think I had seen this movie as a child but I did not not recall just how scary this movie is for very young children. My daughter watched it and told me she didn't like the "evil spirit" that is the actual name of the evil character in the movie. I would fast forward through those scenes- but the scary scenes actually make up most of the movie! I hid the movie from her after I saw what it was doing to her. My child had bad dreams and wouldn't sleep for weeks. I gave the movie to her older girl cousins who said they wanted it, but I feel bad because I know it is a horrible movie for any audience. It would have been best for preschoolers to have left the creepy villains out and kept only the care bears and cousins in a care free adventure. Not the case with this one folks! The real reason we bought the movie was to see the lovable care bears. If your kids love care bears do NOT buy this movie or they will soon become their least favorite toys- even scare bears. Trust me, it is just that bad!!If you are looking for a cutesy care bear movie-a good new one is The Care Bears Big Wish movie- my daughter enjoys that one now.

Please, parents everywhere, show Care Bears to your children, not Pokemon.

In my opinion, this movie and Care Bears Movie 2 are the best films I am ever going to watch. Care Bears were there all the way through my childhood. I am 16 and I am still watching these two cute movies. I can't help it. I think this movie could teach anyone a lesson, no matter what age.Care Bears is a film about Morality teaching young kids to share, love and about friendship, unlike Pokemon which provokes the young population to fight and steal each others Pokemon cards. This movie is full of beautiful and catchy songs, but I prefer the 2nd movies sound track. I will never get bored of this movie, and I will watch it till this old tape of mine screws up from old age (where I will be VERY upset). This movie will bring you songs which will never get out of your head, these songs have been in my head all my life and I have had a happy life so far.You may think that Care Bears have no effect on your child, but I grew up with it. Now im a vegetarian, a volunteer for the RSPCA and a success at school. Im extremely bubbly and kind hearted and hate to hurt people. You decide. Please, parents everywhere, show Care Bears to your children, not Pokemon.

This movie grows cuter with every viewing...and has never aged!

Despite many criticizing the pre-Renaissance 1980's as the worst-ever decade for the animation industry, it produced memorable films like "NIMH 1", "An American Tail", "LBT 1" (all three produced by Don Bluth), "Oliver & Company" (Disney), and this, one of the first full-length cartoons ever to be based on a toy franchise. From the Canadian company Nelvana comes the first installment in a trilogy of big-screen movies centering on the Care Bears and the Care Bear Cousins follows the adventures of Kim and Jason, two small children who feel that people don't care for them enough. At the start of the movie, they are starting to be befriended by the Bears when Friend and Secret Bear come by them on the city streets. This mild-mannered masterpiece (if not a real classic in the wake of "Rock & Rule", also produced by Nelvana, as well as the Disney films of the early 90's) is so sweet, you'll think the whole world needs more films than this and not slice-fests like Q & U's "Kill Bill".ALSO RECOMMENDED: Nelvana's Care Bears show (all of season 1 and a few in season 2), the next two Care Bears films, and "My Little Pony: The Movie".9/10

Care Bears ....

Care Bears make us want to be happier, caring people. I really enjoyed the movie and am going to add it to my list for Christmas. This is a movie that I would like to share with my kids and I hope that they feel the same about it. Care Bears were a staple when I was a child and I would rather have my children hooked on the bears with the "saccharine songs" and the "threadbare story" of love and caring, than some of the cartoons available today.

this is the sweetest little movie...the dialogue is a little cheesy, but you have to understand it was made in the 80s and geared for little kids. the bears are so cute, and there are some parts that will make you laugh, and if your especially sensitive, you might even tear up at some parts. the second movie is good too, but theres a little too much darkness in it, with the evil boy at camp and everything. the first movie is all fun, and very little scary-ness. its also when you first meet the care bear cousins, which are a bunch of jungle animals and at the end they all get their little tummy-pictures. its a really great movie to rent when your in a happy mood. :-)

There are so many better and less annoying kids films out there

posted on 17 Aug 2008

Call me a curmudgeon, but I absolutely hate the Care Bears and wish they had never been created. They are, without a doubt, the most saccharine and bland characters created in the last 30 years. So sweet, so nice that you really wish that there was a movie that paired them with Itchy and Scratchy!!! Now I am not really saying I want the really little kids out there to see ultra-violent films, but there gets to be a point when a film is so non-offensive and sweet that it nearly puts the viewers in a diabetic coma! This means, parents, that if you are suckered into watching this with your kids, you are in for a trip to Hades! I just can't see how any sane adult could stand watching these horrid creatures for more than about 20 seconds. On top of these complaints, the animation quality is poor and the script is so mindless and insipid that ANYTHING must be better for the kids to watch. This stuff makes the Teletubbies look edgy!

CLASSIC CHILDREN'S CARTOON!

First of all, I'm NOT a kid! The only reason I chose this review form is because there is no other alternative to remain anonymous. I'd just like to say that this is my all time favorite movie from my childhood! (Yes, I AM also a child of the 80s) I first saw it when I was about three or so and have loved it greatly ever since! Heck, it sure beats all that other mind-numbing crap that they consider as children's programing nowadays (e.g. Barney)! Nobody else did it better than the Care Bears themselves! Okay, so the animation is slightly dated by today's standards, but the characters and the different areas seen in the movie (such as Care Alot and the Forest of Feelings) are so beautifully done along with the musical numbers! ("Home is in Your Heart" is probably the best one you will hear in this) As an adult, I DO still love all the other adult-related material (such as "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings"), but it's nice to reflect back on my childhood because it sometimes brings a tear to my eye. What's more, Mickey Rooney does some of the voice acting in this as well! If you want a movie that you and your children will enjoy, then I recommend, "The Care Bears Movie"!

Good Movie.

This has always been one of my favorite movies to watch. Looking at it objectively I suppose I could pick apart this movie until there was nothing left. But I'm not going to do that nor do I want to do. Yes it was a little cheesy at times but I liked all the songs and it of course had a good message. One thing I have noticed is that some people have to point out that this movie was made for commercial reasons. So what? Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter have been commercialized and no one seems to think it takes away from them. Commercializing a movie and making a profit is just part of the industry. This was a cute funny movie with a positive message, I liked it and so I give it 10 stars.

What a children's film really is supposed to be

posted on 10 Feb 2008

Yes it's sweet. Of course it is, it's meant for kids! Little ones, but as a 20 year old I still love this film. In fact I was only just able to a watch it again, because I kept remembering how much the evil spirit terrified me as a child. Compare the Bears, who actually teach their young viewers something worthwhile: that if you care about the people around you the world will be a better place, to some of the cartoons we subject our kids to today like South Park with it's crude animation and message that the way to deal with things is violence and swearing. I would choose the Bears every time. Parents: have the decency to allow your kids to watch a good cartoon, you might learn something too.

Inexplicable and So Slow!

posted on 21 Jan 2008

First, let me say that my 2 year old received this as a gift and really loves it. However, no one else in the family can stand it. The characters are generally mean spirited (except of course for the bears) and no one really cares if they get redeemed. Further, the story moves VERY SLOWWWWLY, and I cannot emphasize this point enough. The story is very convoluted and does little to demonstrate to children what good storytelling can be. Save your money.

Sadistic. Creepy. Evil.

posted on 25 Nov 2007

This movie is the most frightening film I've tried to watch with my [...] daughter. It is NOT suitable for very young children. I was rather horrified by just how creepy it is. The juxtaposition of the saccharine bears with the sadistic cruel scary "spirit" is truly bizarre and could;ve been created by someone who in fact HATES children. If you are not buying this movie due to your own nostalgic desire to relive the 80's, but to watch something sweet and cuddly with your sweet and cuddly children, be forewarned. This movie is not only bad, it's kinda 'bad'. Like, not in a good way. If children are not involved in the purchase- but you are reliving the 80's or getting some really weird gift for a friend, then, you know, maybe you'll dig it. I didn't.

horrible movie

posted on 02 Oct 2007

This movie is really bad on so many levels I hardly know where to start. For whatever the reason, most of the movie is involves a boy possessed by an evil spirit. Any attempt at a positive message is totally lost in the EVIL imagary and theme. Attempting to get a happy, nice movie for my young children, I ended up with a totally disturbed movie.

My favorite Movie

posted on 12 Aug 2007

I am a care bear collector and have nearly all of the care bear dvds (plus some other care bears items). But out of all the care bears movies I have seen or own, this movie is the one I enjoy the most. It is also the one that started my collection. I was prone to bouts of depression and felt like I was in a slump all the time; but after I bought this movie and watched it for the first time, I felt a such a strong feeling of (hope?) or maybe (joy?). all I know is that this is my most favorite movie of all time. I recommend this movie to all kids, adults, and esp. those that are depressed. How does it make you feel?

A classic triumph in childrens animation!

This is sorta strange. I'm eleven years old renting this movie. I have a interest in 80's cartoons. This is a cool movie. The storyline is wonderful. It's about two kids whom they meet the care bears. Also a magicians assistant a young boy with no friends thumbles into a evil book that can talk fools him and makes the whole world with no love or caring. Looks like a job for the care bears! This is a great movie for little ones. Kids will really get the message. This ones worth every penny!

Fun Movie.

posted on 28 Jul 2007

This is what made me love the Care Bears! I liked the second movie a little better but this one was cute too. As a Christian I noticed that both movies have some occultish undertones but I don't think it's anything too bad. All in all it was a cute and fun movie and I liked all the songs.

PS
I decided to respond to some of the reviews about the bad guys. I think this goes to the heart of what the Care Bears of the 80's were supposed to be about. They weren't made to be some cutesy claptrap like today but about a good vs evil theme with some morals thrown in. It was the villains that made Care Bears so great. As far as showing it to kids of 2 - 3 it might not be a good idea simply because they won't understand it very well. I see no reason why older kids like 5 - 8 can't watch it. I think the big problem is that some parents just want to shelter their kids. Now exposing your child to cartoons like South Park is not what I'm suggesting but come on! Care Bears is not bad and is certainly better then the crap shown on tv today.
