The sequel stinks

posted on 29 Aug 2009

I just got The Fox and the Hound 2 and I saw it and I was very disappointed. It doesn't even compare to the original at all. It's only 69 minutes but really less than that and is a rip off. The first one is 83 minutes long and at least as better charaters and a more powerful story. I recommend sticking with getting the first one or more of the Disney classics but usually the sequel is a flop. I'm only going to keep it as it might be worth money later. They could have made the story stronger. There was no big mama and all these new characters that didn't make any sense. I believe Disney could have done better than this. I say if you're considering this, save your money, and get a Disney classic with a good story.

Such a great cute movie!!!

I only have one thing to say. Wow! The film blew me away just like that. Firstly, the story is very possible, because it might have happened before Copper went to train and then grow up. The story is about Copper meeting one singing stray band and finding about his talent that he can sing. In this midquel the friendship between Copper and Tod is put on test again. I'm very pleased with the voice cast. Not single one character felt one dimensional. Dixie is my favourite character because when she has fight with the Cash (the leading band dog), she is very, very funny. Secondly, the animation is very good! It's bright, crisp and fluid and looks expensive, not cheap at all. Finally, we come to music. The music and songs are simply amazing, starting from band songs to Dixie's single! To sum it all up, this movie has good story, good animation, funny humour, very likable characters and finally super music score. See it, you won't be disappointed. I give it 9/10, but I would like if Disney didn't put number 2 in title as this is midquel, not a sequel.

This is the second movie in the fox and the hound series. Just to inform even though on the back of the box it say this is a heartwarming sequl that is half correct. This movie was shoot after the first fox and the hound came out but is not a sequel. This movie is actually a midquel. Meaning the events in this movie takes place inbetween the begining of the first movie when tod and coper are kids and the end of the movie when they are full grown adult animals. Due to some very brief action sequences I recommend this is to ages 7 and up. The story of tod and copper continues when copper is chosen to join a band of singing strays. Will tod adjust to be coppers servants. Will the jealous female ex singer of the band pull apart the friendship between the young dog and the fox find out in the heartwarming conclusion

Just not the same "Hound Dog".

I have the original Fox and The Hound and have watched it many times.
This new sequel does not tug at the heart like the first, therefore, this new storyline seems rather silly. Do see the original first, otherwise, you may miss a wonderful family film.

a Classic

Great, another Disney Sequel/Prequel...

When will Disney stop with all of this? I guess when they stop coming up in the black will they realize this cheapens the Disney brand. Not only are the sequels pointless, they add no character development nor original story. The fox and the hound in this movie are back on their respective farms. But instead of conflict that actually means life and death, you have one about making it big as singers in some dog group. Petty jealousy and popularity messages are conveyed. I guess that is the focus of today.I did not like this movie and had a bad time watching the misadventure. Please do not bring out another Fox and the Hound movie. "D-"

One of the best animated features to come along in decades

Brilliant, captivating, heartwarming. Everyone involved did a fantastic job. They did Disney proud. In fact, it goes far beyond a worthy contribution to Disney's legacy. Country music and county fairs are the perfect background for The Fox And The Hound 2. It's actually much better than the first movie in the series, and hopefully it won't be the last. It raises the bar for how good a sequel can be. The music is unforgettably awesome. Patrick Swayze has a unique speaking voice, perfect for the movie, but I'm really glad they cut from his voice in the first line of Hound Dude to Josh Gracin's voice for the rest of the song. One can really tell that many people's hearts and souls went into the making of this motion picture.

Sheer awesomeness.

For once I was expecting total disappointment and got better than I ever would have hoped for. Yes, this is a "mid-quel," but once you've seen the (incredible) first you can sort of imagine where these events might fit in. This has its own climax and all, but the plot fits within the original's parameters. It might not make 100% sense, but to go back and do something like this is pretty tough. It's all right. So, what's good about The Fox and the Hound 2? Much more than anyone expects. First, the obvious animation. It, and the scenery, are wonderful. Bright, bold, shiny, fresh colors, detailed and true-to-the-first backdrops. Very expressive characters who are just delightful to watch--the way the dogs move is fantastic and well done. As to the country music, even if you're not normally a fan, there is nothing to dislike about the movie's songs. Particularly "Good Doggie, No Bone." (Great song. Like "Streets of Gold," it's sung to a young animal to educate them about something (it's really about herself, and what she's learned the hard way.) And ain't that what life is, though? "It's all, 'Good doggie,' but no bone!") They're nicely done by stars from the heart of country music, as explained on the DVD bonus feature. And the story? Surprisingly great too; good dialogue, witty and humorous bits, good character development. None, or very little of, the usual sequel hokeyness and cheese I'd anticipated. The story of the county fair and aspiring Singin' Strays band is actually very believable. There are so many highlights it's hard to remember them all, but the scene near the end, in which the group performs for a jolly talent scout outside a quaint, old-fashioned diner comes to mind for one. The setting just helps to make the story work; that little diner is so cute, and so perfect for the scene. Same with the design of the Strays' trailer and its 'woman's touch' from Dixie.I'm still dismayed to see sneak peeks for Cinderella 3 and The Little Mermaid 3 on the DVD, but at least this movie gives me hope that somebody still may know what they're doing making these sequels. Then again, this movie was almost tailored directly to me. More than anything I am a sucker for singing and dancing dogs: show me a film centered around that, and you've got me. I like to imagine a world where everyone's a dog and there are musicians along the lines of the Singin' Strays anyway, but even without such a love for this type of thing, you can appreciate the movie. It stands well enough on its own. But I'm saving the best parts for last.Yes, it's pretty original; far from perfect, of course, but I won't run down all of the weaker points because as with any sequel, there are many. However, they don't drag down the big picture. Tod and Copper are naturally your young and precious main characters, but Chief, Widow Tweed and Amos Slade haven't been left out--or ruined, either. Chief is especially well animated and a good source of humor. The one character, though, who in my opinion really makes the movie great--in fact she makes the movie--is Dixie. When I first saw her and Cash on the cover, my impression was: 'OMG! It's Dodger and Rita from 'Oliver and Company' redone!' Because Cash's bandanna HAS to be an homage to Dodger. And Dixie has that same sort of look as Rita (which is my favorite 'look' in the world and when I see such a character, it's instant Favorite)--seriously, she's her cover-art twin. Well, turns out Dixie is something like the country cousin of Sasha LaFleur, another sequel-starring performer and Rita-type. A force to be reckoned with and of course the love interest of Cash, she's the most interesting character (and thanks to being in show business, the road is rough for her and Cash). Visually Dixie is an amazing character to watch; the way they made her move and dance just perfectly captures how you'd want to do it if you were her. She steals every scene she's in and I'm glad she's such a central character. Her song is probably the best part of the film. In fact, this movie probably should have been a separate, Singin Strays-centric non-sequel. So to wrap up, this movie basically blew me away--two thumbs up just for stunning me.

A Great Mid-quel!

This is NOT a sequel to the Fox and the Hound, rather this is a story that takes place somewhere in the middle of that movie.

Tod and Copper stumble upon a country fair in their quaint country town and through a matter of circumstance, Copper ends up being a "star" of the Singin Strays singing dog group. This leads to turmoil within the band, as one of their own talented divas gets ousted in favor of the newcomer, as well as Tod becomes depressed as he gets pushed to the background as Copper rises to stardom (at the fair though, of course). This keeps enough conflict to make the movie an exciting journey, told through rich characters, beautiful bright animation, a cornucopia of great country music performed by professional stars from the heartland, memorable voice acting and a decent story to tie it all together.

It's great to see Copper and Tod back together again in their "puppy/cubhood" - something that was perhaps not fleshed out enough in the first film. Yet the real stars of the show are Cash (voiced by Patrick Swayze) and the diva dog Dixie voiced by Reba McEntire. These two have spunk and fire and its great seeing them banter back and forth in their personal and professional relationships (which naturally intertwine).

The great music, slapstick comedy and friendly characters make this a fun watch for children of all ages. I purchased it when my three year old seemed interested in it from the commercials and previews on other DVDs and it became an unlikely hit for the whole family.

Two thumbs up and four stars. One star removed because the story could have been tightened up a bit, but other than that, this is a surprisingly solid effort from Disney.

Very pleased!

I was fooled by the reviews on this movie

I bought this at Target, thinking that this was a SEQUEL. I was wrong. This is NOT a sequel to The Fox and the Hound. It's yet another one of disney's "midquels". If you thought that disney's sequels were bad, watch these. They'll make you wish that disney would start making sequels again.

This is about Tod and Copper when they were pups at the county fair.

Anyway, I hope that this review will warn others not to make the same mistake that I did.

What is happening to our culture?

posted on 30 Oct 2008

I agree with every comment that has been made stating that The Fox and the Hound 2 was made in poor taste, and that the story was far inferior to the original. What is happening to our culture? When will the bastardization of classic stories that convey cherished themes and morals ever stop? In my opinion, Disney will never be what it used to be, and that is sad. What an incredible loss. If we, as Americans, want to experience anything of real value in literature and storytelling in this day and age, we have to park ourselves in the culture we created thirty years ago and prior and remain stuck there, because almost everything Disney or Hollywood creates now depicts violence, blatant sex and sexual themes, and as another comment said "themes of petty jealousy and popularity." What a disgrace.

Not great, but not bad

As far as my experience with certain Disney sequels I was prepared for either success or failure. I got somewhere in the middle, the animation was lively and the acting good, but in the spirit of the original I didn't think it was quite there. The story failed to elaborate in relation to the original, unlike Bambi II which pulled it with surprising success. Having watched Bambi II I was very much expecting to see something of the same caliber, but this fell a little short. Too many new characters were introduced and several of the old characters didn't even merit a cameo appearance which was a little disappointing. However, the movie still had it's fair share of cute moments to make you giggle, which was one of it's saving graces. The animation is at a great standard and no obvious flaws to spot and was casted reasonably well. I was concerned when the cover said "The music of today's hottest stars is centre stage" which sounded like a poor effort to grab the attention of any mainstream dolt, but the soundtrack wasn't too bad and had me tapping my toes in a few places. From the point of view of a Disney cartoon it was a little under powered but it's still got some good laughs and pleasant moments, but don't go expecting the repeat success of the original.

Please Spare Me

When I was a child, I absolutely adored Disney's The Fox and the Hound. It was quite a dark drama focusing on the struggle of preserving a friendship when really the two different animals are suppose to be enemies in nature. I still found it to be a very good animated feature with some memorable characters and nice pieces of music to listen to.But seriously, was there any need for a sequel when the first movie was released 27 years ago? The Fox and the Hound 2 isn't as good as the original. I thought the storyline was weak and predictable. However, the animation in this film was very impressive but better technology doesn't mean better storytelling.I just didn't think there was any need for a sequel because there was nothing more to add to the story. Although, showing Tod's cubs might have been good.Overall, this film is nothing special and it's completely inferior to the original.Disney really needs to stop making sequels because if you don't have a good story that is equal quality to the first movie, what's the point in making a second one?

Not too bad at all !

I just viewed this sequel and really enjoyed it -- Of course, it goes without saying that it will never compare with the first -- ( I really missed seeing Big Mama! ) But honestly ... you can't not like this film as any movies with such adorable characters has to be good ... As I am not a country music fan, I didn't think I would like the soundtrack, but I loved it -- Very entertaining! And hearing Patrick Swayze's voice as Cash doesn't hurt either - I wish they had given him more as I believe he is a singer too. (I was also disappointed that they didn't feature him on the making-of featurette) --

I couldn't help wondering if the voice of Chief was the original Pat Buttram?? It sure sounded like him, but I did not see his name in the credits ...

Give the movie a try ... If you take it for what it's worth and not expect it to be just as good as the original movie version, then I think you will really enjoy it!

It took a little while to ship this item.

Great Movie - A Must See

Too cute. It's almost as good as the first movie. Disney has done it again and made a really cute film. The music in this movie is really awesome too. The whole family has enjoyed watching this film. A must see for all.

Well done sequel

I actually liked this movie better than the original since it shoed more feelings and inter action between the characters. It showed how friendship can be overlooked when our heads are full of glamour and the desire to go after fame. It taught a good lesson to children in a gentle way like most of the new Disney films are doing.
